Guided tours are the most fun (and safest) way to enjoy Napa's world-famous wines.

The Best Napa Valley Wine Tours

When it comes to drinking wine in Napa Valley , a guided tour isn't just an option; it's an essential experience. Not only will an organized tour provide you with local insight, but it's also a safe, easy and efficient way to sample the region's renowned wine.

From train rides through the countryside to private tours with your own chauffeur, these are the best Napa Valley wine tours based on recent traveler reviews. Note that participants must be 21 or older to participate in any of the recommended outings.

Napa Valley Wine Train – The Legacy Experience

Price: From $625 per person Duration: 6 hours

One of the most popular ways to explore California wine country, the Napa Valley Wine Train offers a variety of experiences. Travelers wanting to visit some of the wineries should book The Legacy Experience, which stops at three vineyards, including two of the best wineries in Napa Valley : V. Sattui and Charles Krug. It also includes a photo-op at the historic Welcome to Napa Valley sign, a four-course meal (served throughout the day) and a welcome glass of sparkling wine. All wine tasting fees are included in the tour rate.

The tour lasts six hours in total, three of which are spent on the train. Check-in begins at 9:45 a.m., the train departs at 10:15 and the tour concludes around 4:30 p.m. Despite the steep cost of tickets (which varies by day), travelers say this Napa Valley wine tour is a must. They also note how delicious the food is.

Napa Valley Wine Trolley – Daily Tour

Price: From $125 per person Duration: 6.5 hours

Explore California wine country aboard one of the Napa Valley Wine Trolleys, which resemble San Francisco's iconic open-air cable cars. The six-hour Daily Tour stops at three wineries in the lower half of the valley; specific wineries vary from day to day. Drivers double as guides and provide information about the region and its best-known product, and patrons generally find them to be both very informative and amusing.

The tour departs from the Oxbow Public Market in downtown Napa at 10 a.m. daily, with pickups at select Napa Valley hotels starting earlier. Tickets include transportation, guide gratuity and a picnic lunch, but exclude winery tasting fees, which range from $30 to $40 per person at each winery. If you're looking to visit Castello di Amorosa (the popular winery that resembles a castle) in particular, take the Up Valley Tour .

Platypus Wine Tours – Join-in Wine Tour of the Napa Valley

Price: From $130 per person Duration: 6.5 hours

Platypus Wine Tours escorts tour-takers to three area wineries over the course of approximately 6.5 hours. Wineries visited depend on availability and change from one tour to the next, though they tend to be small, family-owned operations. Drivers/guides earn enthusiastic praise for being knowledgeable, professional and personable. Tours typically depart from a central location in Napa (for those driving into Napa), but pickups from nearby hotels are also available. Group sizes range from eight to 12 participants.

Tickets include a picnic lunch at one of the stops as well as bottled water aboard the bus. Tasting fees at the wineries are not included. Platypus also offers tours of Sonoma Valley as well as private tours.

Best Napa Valley Tours

Napa Valley Bike Tours – Full-Day Napa Valley E-bike Tour

Price: From $199 per person Duration: 5.5 hours

Cycle to two different wineries on this electric bike ride. Along the route, guides share information regarding the region and wine-making, and they are widely regarded as knowledgeable and helpful. The bike tours, which are restricted to six participants, begin in Yountville at 10:30 a.m. and end around 4:30 p.m.; this includes bike fitting and riding instruction.

Tickets include use of an e-bike and helmet as well as lunch from Bouchon Bakery, a local favorite. They do not cover winery tasting fees, though some of these fees may be waived with a minimum wine purchase. The tour covers a total of 12 to 17 miles, with an average 3 to 6 miles between stops. If that seems overwhelming, you can opt for a half-day outing with a stop at one winery.

The eight-hour winery tour includes stops at three to four vineyards, though wine tasting fees are not included in rates nor are gratuities.

The company offers a range of tours to suit all kinds of travelers, including the Intro to Napa Valley Tour, with the option to make it a multiday excursion; the Howell Mountain Tour, where you'll taste robust reds in Napa Valley's first AVA; and a Collector's Wine Tasting Tour to small, more exclusive wineries. Beau Wine Tours come highly recommended by travelers, especially for special events.

Frequently Asked Questions

August through October, which coincides with the harvesting season, is the best time to visit Napa Valley . March through May is also a nice, often less-crowded time to visit.

The best Napa wine tours start at around $120 per person; fees will increase depending on tour inclusions (such as meals, gratuities and tastings). Prices may also fluctuate based on tour group size as well as the time of year and day of week.

Yes, it is recommended that you tip both your tour guide and your tasting host at each vineyard. Some tours include gratuities in rates, which may be something you want to look for when booking your tour.

None of the wineries have a dress code, so opt for casual (but not too casual) and comfortable. Think flowy sundresses, wide leg pants, khaki shorts or pants, dark jeans and nice tops (blouses, collared shirts) with sandals or sneakers. You'll also want to bring a light jacket as it can get chilly on some of the vineyards, even in the summer.

Why Trust U.S. News Travel

Amanda Norcross has previously traveled to Napa Valley, visiting select wineries on her own and also with a tour. She always recommends a tour, not just for a designated driver with a local's perspective, but also because you get to meet and imbibe with other fun and interesting tourgoers along the way. She used her personal experience and insights from other travelers to determine the best wine tours in Napa Valley. Cheers!

What To Expect From Your First Wine Tour

Embarking on your first wine tour can be an exciting and memorable experience, especially if you have a passion for wine and its rich history. Whether you plan to visit a local winery or make a trip to a world-renowned wine region, like Bordeaux or Tuscany , it’s essential to know what to expect to make the most of your experience.

From the moment you step foot on the vineyard property to the time you raise your glass for the first tasting, a wine tour offers a unique journey through the art of winemaking.

Podere Forte wine tasting

During a wine tour, you’ll not only have the opportunity to taste a variety of wines but also learn about the wine-making process from start to finish. This includes understanding how the grapes are harvested, the fermentation process, and even the steps to age and bottle the wine.

If you’re lucky enough to be there during harvest, you might even get to see some of the harvesting and destemming on your visit. For me, this is the most special time to visit a winery. There’s nothing like seeing all those grapes piled up, and smelling the aroma of freshly picked fruit.

A well-planned wine tour can provide a great platform to connect with winemakers, discover new wines, and immerse yourself in the beauty of the vineyards.

As a first-time wine tour participant, it helps to prepare and familiarize yourself with some tips and know exactly what you’re getting into so there are no surprises.

From choosing the right attire to understanding basic tasting etiquette, being well-versed in these aspects will help enhance your overall experience and ensure that you have a fantastic time exploring the world of wine.

Choosing the Right Wine Tour

Types of wine tours.

There are various types of wine tours available, depending on your interests and preferences. Most wine tours are put together by a company and are arranged so that you will visit producers they have a relationship with. They will include 2-3 stops at wineries for a tour and tasting.

Others are centered around learning wine tasting techniques or exploring a particular wine region. These are often more specialized tours through companies that are designed to teach you more about wine.

And there are others that have no focus other than to get you to the winery and back. What you get out of the experience will be entirely up to you.

Wine Regions

Wine production takes place in many regions all over the world. You might choose to visit a popular wine region like Bordeaux in France , Tuscany in Italy , Napa Valley in California , and Hunter Valley in Australia .

Each region has a distinct winemaking tradition and offers unique experiences. You can base where you visit on what type of wine you like or drink most, or maybe you want to try somewhere you’re less familiar with.

We’ve been to nearly all of the major wine regions around the world and have loved every one of the experiences we’ve had. You really can’t go wrong. Just choose somewhere that fascinates you.

Our wine tour group - a bunch of really fun people!

Group vs. Private Tours

When selecting a wine tour, you’ll have to decide if you prefer a group or private tour. Private tours are usually more expensive but provide a more intimate and personalized experience.

On the other hand, group tours are less expensive and offer opportunities to meet other wine enthusiasts, but you’ll also have to go along with the crowd.

Consider your budget and preferences when choosing between these two options. We like to find a great company that operates in the area, like Wine Tours Hunter Valley , and see what they offer. You can typically trust all the great ratings these companies have to know that you’ll be in good hands.

Preparation and Planning

Meticulous planning is essential for a successful first wine tour experience. Consider these necessary steps as you plan your journey.

What to Wear

Dress comfortably and appropriately for the weather and the occasion. Many wineries have a relaxed atmosphere, so dressing casually is acceptable, within reason.

Opt for layers, because you might find yourself standing in a sun-drenched vineyard and the next minute in an underground cellar.

What to Bring

A few essential items can enhance your wine tour experience:

  • Notepad and pen for taking notes about the wines you taste
  • Camera or smartphone for capturing labels of the wines you like
  • A reusable water bottle to stay hydrated
  • Snacks to soak up any excess you sipped
  • A wine carrier or tote to bring home purchased bottles

Stephan & Walker

Transportation

How you’re going to get around to the wineries is one of the top concerns, because you have to be very careful not to drink and drive. There are a few options to consider:

  • Join a guided group tour with an established company that provides transportation.
  • Hire a driver for the day.
  • Choose a designated driver from your group who won’t be wine tasting.
  • Use ride-share services like Uber or Lyft to travel between tasting venues, however this can be very difficult to do in many wine regions.
  • Sip and spit. It’s still possible to get a good wine tasting experience even if you’re spitting out the wine. This is something we do often. There are spittoons available always. If you don’t see one, ask for it.

When planning your winery visits, allow enough time for travel, wine tasting, and breaks for meals or snacks. It’s a good idea to limit your itinerary to around three to four wineries per day, as this will give you enough time to enjoy each location without rushing.

wine glasses

The Wine Tasting Experience

Tasting techniques.

During your first wine tour, you’ll have the opportunity to learn various wine tasting techniques. It starts with visual examination, where you’ll check the color and clarity of the wine.

Then, you’ll swirl the glass to release the aroma and take a deep sniff to identify its distinct scent. Then you can taste the wine, swish it around in your mouth and suck in some air to aerate the wine in your mouth.

While sampling, consider the wine’s sweetness, acidity, tannins, and overall balance. Even if you don’t want to get technical about it. Think about whether you like this wine or not. Is it pleasing to your palate? In the end, that’s all that really matters in wine tasting.

Wine Pairings and Food Options

wine tasting

Another aspect of the wine tasting experience is discovering the perfect pairings. It’s fun to see how different wines complement various foods.

Choosing the right food can elevate your wine tasting experience and help you better appreciate the nuances in flavor.

Many wineries offer food pairing suggestions or even full meals featuring locally sourced ingredients to showcase their wines in the best light. If you have this opportunity at a winery you visit, definitely go for it! These have been some of the best experiences we’ve had. Tasting the wine with food really elevates it.

Etiquette and Tips

While you’re just there to have a good time and learn a bit about wine, there are some basic etiquette and tips to make the most out of your experience.

  • Take your time and enjoy it. Sip don’t gulp.
  • Hold your glass by the stem to avoid warming the wine.
  • It is okay to spit the wine out after tasting if you don’t want to drink it. It’s okay to ask for a pour bucket if you don’t see one.
  • Ask questions and take notes.
  • Don’t feel obligated to buy the wine, whether you enjoyed it or not.
  • Don’t ask for ice to add to your wine.

Vineyard Tours

wine tour

During a vineyard tour, you can expect to learn about the wine-making process, starting from grape harvest and selection, to fermentation, aging, and bottling, before moving on to the wine tasting itself.

Vineyard tours are generally guided by a winery employee or owner, who will take you through the grounds and provide information about the winery’s history and operations.

Each winery offers different experiences, such as walking through the vineyards, taking a closer look at the production facilities, or even participating in hands-on activities like grape harvesting, depending on the winery and time of year.

Some wineries might also provide a more in-depth sensory exploration, allowing guests to learn about wine aromas and flavors by sampling different wines side by side. This part of the tour usually takes place in a tasting room or outdoor patio, offering a relaxed environment to appreciate the nuances of each wine.

Purchasing and Shipping Wine

Buying wine at the winery.

Penfolds' wines

You may want to purchase a few bottles of your favorite wines from the wineries you visit. Be sure to approach this strategically. If you’ve flown to your destination, you likely have a limited space to bring back wine.

Often, we’ll travel to a wine region with a wine case that can hold 6 bottles that we check on the airline. That gives us 6 opportunities to fall in love with a wine.

You don’t want to buy a bunch of wine at your first stop and have no room for others, but you don’t want to miss out on a wine you loved either. We try to only purchase one bottle from each winery we visit (if we liked it enough), and not buy any bottles of wine that we can get back home.

If you truly love a wine and can’t live without it, ask the winery about shipping a case home. Know that this can be very expensive. Only do it if you know you won’t regret the purchase later.

Shipping and Handling

If you’re interested in having your wine shipped directly to your home, you have a few options.

  • Many wineries will ship the bottles to the U.S. or other countries for you, usually for a high fee. Be sure to calculate the cost of each bottle after shipping and handling has been added.
  • You can often buy the same wines at a wine store nearby and they sometimes have better, less expensive shipping options.
  • There are many online wine merchants where you can find the wines you tasted and have them shipped to you. It’s not the same as buying from the winery, but still good.

Background on the Burgundy Wine Region

Burgundy is such a legendary wine region that it’s home to multiple UNESCO World Heritage sites . The Côte de Nuits , one of the most well-known sub-regions in Burgundy, is a paradise for those seeking an intimate experience with the world of fine wines. Opting for a private tour here lets you experience the heart of Burgundy. It’s home to many of the region’s grand cru estates, where you can enjoy exceptional red wines straight from ancient wine cellars. It’s particularly celebrated for its Pinot Noir-based wines and prestigious wine estates, many of which produce wines that have aging potential far beyond those based in new world wine regions.

Aside from Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune stands out as another noteworthy wine destination known for its exquisite white wine, primarily crafted from Chardonnay grapes. Here, you can participate in private wine tours with the wine producers themselves. You’ll be guided through both large houses and family-run domains, uncovering the secrets of wine production that have been honed over centuries. Each wine estate in the Burgundy region is a story in itself, often tied to the rich history of the area, including the tumultuous times of the French Revolution and the evolution of viticulture through the ages. The best ways for wine lovers to experience the Burgundy include structured day trips or self-guided tours along the wine route. Whether it’s the Golden Slope of the Côte d’Or or the heart of Chablis, each area presents a unique story of grape varieties, wine production, and local traditions.

Burgundy is not just about tasting amazing wines; it’s about soaking up the culture and history of the area. From medieval villages, the historic Clos de Vougeot Castle, to the Côte Chalonnaise, every stop is a discovery. The region’s culinary delights, like the famous Beef Bourguignon, perfectly complement bottles of Pinot Noir. Venture past the stone walls of ancient domains, and into the heart of local life, enriched with fine wines, great food, and a treasure trove of history.

What is the best time of year to visit Burgundy for wine tourism?

The ideal time to visit Burgundy for a wine-focused trip is during the late summer and early fall, specifically from August to October. This period aligns with the grape harvest (vendanges) when the vineyards are bustling with activity. The weather is generally pleasant, allowing for comfortable exploration of the vineyards and outdoor tastings. However, if you prefer quieter visits and cooler weather, spring (April to June) is also a great time to explore the region.

How can I get around the Burgundy wine region?

The most flexible way to explore Burgundy is by car, as it allows you to visit various vineyards and towns at your own pace. Car rentals are available in major towns and cities like Dijon and Beaune . Seattle Wine Tours Comparison

Kristin’s tips for your wine tour.

Here are some *hopefully* helpful tips from yours truly to keep in mind while planning your wine-tasting trip from Seattle.

  • ⏰ Book as soon as you can: While I’m also one to procrastinate, I recommend booking or at least reserving a ✨ refundabl e tour ✨ you’re interested. These tours fill up fast, and if your travel dates don’t work out or something comes up, you can cancel 24 before the tour and get a refund!
  • 📝 Write down your requests: If you have any dietary restrictions or want to tour a specific winery, make sure to write that down as you make your reservation! Most tour guides will do their best to accommodate you!
  • 🥾 Wear Closed-Toed Shoes: Between the fickle weather and the possibility of walking on uneven ground (guaranteed if you’re visiting Snoqualmie Falls), be sure to wear comfortable, close-toed shoes! No one wants to start the day with a fall!

A picture of one of the rooms that you'll walk through on the Underground tour through Seattle.

  • ☔️ Dress for rain or shine! As mentioned above, the weather can change on a dime, I recommend bringing sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen, a light rain jacket (at least), and maybe a good travel-sized umbrella !
  • 💸 Small Cash: I recommend bringing $10 – $20 USD to tip your tour guide(s). That said, if you don’t have small cash on you, you can likely Venmo, Zelle, or Cash App. That’s what I did when I had an amazingly charismatic guide for the Underground Tour of Seattle and had no small bills on me! 🙂

How to Do Your Own Seattle Wine Tour

It’s no secret that Seattle isn’t the cheapest or most budget-friendly destination to visit. And after looking at some of the tours, you may be thinking, “Holy crap, some of these tours are expensive! I can’t afford this!” Unfortunately, some of the wine-tasting experiences may indeed be out of your budget. But, that doesn’t mean that you can’t do an independent wine-tasting tour around Seattle! Below, I’ll detail two ways I would recommend going about this.

Wine Tasting With a Rental Car

The first option is to rent a car . Public transportation from the city to the wineries in Woodinville is limited, making a car the most convenient mode of transport. I recommend doing this with Discover Cars as that’s what I’ve had positive experiences with and they offer convenient pick-up options from Sea-Tac Airport. With your rental car, you can do a tour of the Woodinville wineries! Seriously, there are an abundance of wineries to choose from, so you’re sure to find someone that suits your palate!

A picture of the scenic roads at the foothills of the Cascades outside of Seattle. You can create your own wine tour from Seattle with a car.

And a lesser-known secret for saving money is to purchase a Passport to Woodinville Wine Country ! Essentially, it’s a virtual pass that grants you access to tailored tours and discounted tastings across the wine country. The passes are instantly delivered via text message or email. Once you purchase your pass, you just need to check the operating hours of the various tasting rooms for participating wineries (subject to change) and show up during those hours. Then, you show the staff your pass, and you’ll be good to go! This is a budget-friendly option and great if you’re traveling with a small group of 4-5 people since you can split gas and rental expenses ! Plus, it gives you the flexibility to linger at the wineries that catch your interest and explore at your own pace!

✅ 🚗 Check rates & availability for rental cars in Seattle on DiscoverCars

Wine Tasting Without a Rental Car

Now, let’s say you can’t get a rental car or simply don’t want to go through the rental process. Another option is to do a little wine tour within Seattle itself… This isn’t ideal since you won’t get to roam around the vineyards that exist outside the metropolitan area. But, there are a couple of cellars and tasting rooms available that are close enough to the downtown area, which is nothing to turn up your nose to. You can find these tasting rooms around SODO, which is about 10 minutes South of downtown Seattle.

A picture of downtown Seattle with lots of trees adorned with autumn-colored leaves.

Specific places I recommend checking out are Rotie Cellars and Latta Wines ! These are both pretty highly rated and you’ll find a wide array of wines offered there. Also, if you purchase a bottle from Rotie Cellars, they’ll give you a tasting for free, which is always welcomed :’). Another spot to check out in the area is Slight of Hand Cellars . It’s newer and has a fun ambiance that mixes wine and music. Just beware, the wine-tasting experience is on the pricier side, but I’ve heard that most people say it’s worth it!

Seattle Wineries Map

Below is a little map that you can interact and navigate around with. It includes most of the places mentioned throughout the post, so it’ll hopefully assist you in finding your footing in the city! The orange pins are two wineries that are crowd-favorites in Woodinville and worth stopping by. Meanwhile, the purple pines represent tasting rooms in SODO. Lastly, the red pin is Snoqualmie Falls, which several of the tours mentioned above include as a stop!

Housing Accommodations in Seattle

If you’re still in the process of planning your trip to Seattle and haven’t secured your housing accommodations yet, here are some places I recommend checking out. You can also just head directly to your favorite booking platform with the buttons below to see additional housing options.

Low-Cost Stay

  • Perfect for solo travelers or those on a tight budget!
  • The rooms are smaller, but it’s pet-friendly and has a gym!

Mid-Range Stay

  • Very accessible location near Pikes Place with water and city views
  • Includes fitness center, restaurant, bar, and great location

Fancy Stays

  • Indoor swimming pool, private parking, spa, & bar available

Seattle Wine Tours: FAQ

The Seattle wine tours above range from ~$115 USD for the large-group tours to ~$950 USD for the exclusive, private tours. Beware, prices often change depending on demand and the season.

Yes! There is a wine country near Seattle — it’s called Woodinville! This area is filled with 120+ different wineries and wine-tasting rooms. For those without a private car, you’ll need to rent a car , take an Uber, or join a tour to visit the Woodinville wineries.

The Woodinville wine region is about 20 miles (32km) or a 30-minute drive NE from Seattle.

While Seattle is not a wine-producing region itself, it’s close to Woodinville, which is known for producing exceptional red and white varietals. The most famous winery in the region is Chateau Ste. Michelle . They opened to the public in 1976 and were instrumental in putting Washington on the wine map! Today, they welcome over 200,000 visitors per year and you’ll notice that most of the tours stop by here!

The best wine tasting in the city is around Sodo, which is about 10 minutes South of downtown Seattle.

The best time of the year for wine tours is the Fall! Based on my multiple trips to Seattle, there are fewer crowds in autumn and the natural scenery looks spectacular! Of course, though, there are higher chances of rain!

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
