18 Anti-Piracy Weapons for Ships to Fight Pirates

In April 2009, when Israeli based cargo ship MV Africa Star was attacked by nine pirates, the ship’s crew used  coils of barbed wire to prevent pirates from climbing the ship. A major piracy attempt was thus avoided using non-lethal anti-piracy method, a technique used to protect ships in piracy affected areas .

Anti-piracy technology has come a long way since then, with several powerful non-lethal weapons introduced on ships to prevent piracy attacks.

Merchant ships now plying in high piracy affected areas such as Gulf of Aden (GOA) carry Armed Guards along with a series of non-lethal weaponry to thwart any kind of piracy attempt.

Mentioned herein is a list of non-lethal anti-piracy weapons that are used or can be used to fight piracy at high seas.

1. Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD)

Long range acoustic device is a non-lethal anti-piracy device which uses pain inducing sound beam to drive away the pirates. The sonic weapon produces high-pitched noise that is higher than the tolerance level of an average human being. LRAD has been used on a few cargo and cruise ships until now.

2. Anti-Piracy Laser Device

The anti-piracy laser device uses a non-lethal laser beam to provide a visual warning to pirates and distract them temporarily. The laser device can be used during both day and night and can be easily operated by the ship’s crew.

3. Water Cannon

Water cannon is another non-lethal weapon which is extensively used on merchant’s vessels. As an anti-piracy method, the device delivers a powerful and impenetrable stream of water that blows away pirates trying to board the ship. The cannon can also quickly fill the pirates’ boats to slow them down and hinder their manoeuvrability.

Water Cannon

Most of the water cannon anti-piracy systems can be remotely controlled from a safe position on ships.

4 . Electric Secure Fence

Electric fence non-lethal system consists of an electric fence which surrounds the ship and prevents pirates from climbing. The system is a collapsible fence which can be folded and kept safe when not in use.

Electric Secure Fence

Secure Ship is another type of electric fence system which can be effectively used to prevent pirates from climbing ships.

5. Nets – Boat Traps

Boat trap is a type of ballistic net which can be used to stop pirates’ boats when they come near to a merchant ship. When in water, the net ensnares the propellers of the boats which disable the vessel, preventing it from moving forward.

6. Slippery Foam – Mobile Denial System

Slippery foam or Anti-traction material is a non-lethal substance which can be used to make the deck or sides of a ship slippery to avoid pirates from climbing it. The highly viscous substance substantially reduces traction of anything that comes in contact with it, making it difficult to walk or stand.

7. Foul Smelling liquid – Liquid Deterrent System ( or using Stun Gun)

An anti-piracy technology by the International Maritime Security Network of US involves showering approaching pirates with slick, foul-smelling green liquid, which stinks and burns. The burning sensation and the nasty stink forces pirates to jump into the water, thus stopping a possible pirate attack.

8. Anti boarding device – Razor Wire Canister

Anti-boarding device is an anti-piracy method which uses canisters with sharp razor wires to prevent pirates from boarding the ship. The wires act as a barrier between the pirates and the ship, which thwarts forward movement of pirates.

9. Compressed Air  – Ship Bourne Shore Launcher

The Ship Bourne Shore Launcher is a product of a UK based company. The Buccaneer Ship Bourne Shore Launcher is a cannon shaped device which uses compressed air to fire a variety of projectiles. The power and lethality of the projectiles used can vary according to the distance of the pirates from the ship.

10. P Trap Anti Piracy

P-trap concept is a non-lethal system which helps prevent pirates from boarding ships. The system carries thin lines which float at the water level around the sides of the vessel. When pirate skiffs/boats come in contact with the lines, the later gets entangled with the engine and disable the vessel.

11. Anti Piracy Curtain

Designed by a division of Japan’s NYK group along with hose manufacturer Yokoi, the anti-piracy curtain is a unique method to keep pirates from climbing the ships.

The system consists of a series of hoses which are dangled on the port and starboard sides of the vessel. Seawater is passed through the nozzles at a force of 0.2 MegaPascal, which makes the hoses go in unpredictable whirling motion, generating enough force to seriously hurt anyone who gets in the way.

12. Non-lethal / Stun Grenade

Stun grenade or flash grenade is a non-lethal anti-piracy device which produces a blinding flash of light and loud noise.  Stun grenades are used to temporary disorient pirates senses without causing any kind of permanent injury.

13. Dazzle Gun

Dazzle gun is a type of laser weapon which uses green light to disorient and temporarily blind the pirates. The concentrated blast of green light can be used during both day and night.

Dazzle Gun

14. Rubber Ball Grenade

Rubber ball grenade as a non-lethal weapon sprays rubber bullets on detonation. The anti-piracy grenade also produces light and sound which can be used to deter pirates from coming towards the ship.

Rubber Ball Grenade

15. Active Denial System – Pain Ray (Electromagnetic wave)

Officially known as the Active Denial System (ADS), the Pain Ray is a non-lethal weapon which transmits a narrow beam of electromagnetic energy to heat the skin without causing permanent damage. The wave penetrates beneath the skin which causes an unbearable burning sensation, forcing pirates to run away or jump overboard.

16. Anti-Piracy Fire Hoses

Ship’s fire hoses or special Anti-piracy fire hoses are often used to fight pirates trying to board the ships. These high-pressure water hoses are extremely powerful and effective to fight pirates. Special anti-piracy fire hoses also come with semi-automatic and remote control system.

17. Molotov Cocktail

Technically not a hi-tech anti-piracy weapon, Molotov cocktail has been used by a crew of a few merchant ships which were not provided with anti-piracy weapons or armed guards.  Molotov cocktail can be made on ships using empty glass bottles, a flammable substance such as gasoline, and source of ignition such as burning cloth wick. It can be thrown on an approaching pirate boat to set it ablaze and disturb their manoeuvrability.

18. Tasers – Electric Shock

If pirates do get on board ships, crew and ship’s cargo can be protected using tasers – a non-lethal weapon which delivers an electric shock that temporarily causes the pirates to lose neuromuscular control. The device can definitely be used as the last resort to protect the ship’s crew from pirates

Tasers

This is not an exhaustive list of anti-piracy weapons which are or have been used against pirates at high seas. In fact, many of them have not yet been used or implemented on ships. However, if the situation demands, they can potentially be used as non-lethal weapons to keep pirates away from merchant vessels.

Do you know any other successful anti-piracy weapon for maritime piracy?

Some of the techniques shown here are a little more than ridiculous. Why carry non lethal devices when encountering pirates. That is like taking a ‘knife to a gun fight’.

These weapons are just a waste of time and money. If pirates do not hesitate to injure or kill the crew, then why not hesitate to injure and kill the pirates? Pirates will quickly lose interest in hijacking.

I think I agree with the rest of the comments. Just get out the big guns and forget spraying them down with a hose. If they won’t hesitate to kill them, then at least come prepared.

You guys leaving reply’s about how ineffective these weapons are have obviously never left the comfort of your western country. Your “Big guns” will get you thrown in prison, or denied access in MANY of the developing nations that need supplies delivered by Sea Vessel. I personally think that at least a few of these weapons are genius.

We just recently watched the movie “Captain Phillips” I watched. the water cannon fail I saw how easy the pirates got on board. If each of the crew had something as simple as a 1911A They would have not gotten on board. A few M4’s or MP5’s would have been much better. Why in God’s name would they sail in pirated infested water without having at least a few firearms on board.Remember the best defense against a bad guy with a gun (which the pirates had.) Is a good guy with a gun,

P.S. The X26 TAZER is great but less than 100 % reliable. I have one on the left side of my belt as I write this. On the right side of my belt I have a Glock 37 in .45GAP And yes I am a cop.

Cheap 30-06 rifles. Cheap qualification course for officers. Problem solved.

Marine Armor Systems is an innovative and passive vessel protection system based on ballistic blinds, protecting the vessel or rig against pirate attacks and other potential threats such as armed robbery, terrorism and acts of sabotage

Very well written article, i have faced piracy attacks and we were hijacked for 6 days in African waters, above points are valid but i would like to add some.

1. When entering High risk areas, Your AIS should be switched off as pirates get basic info through their AIS fitted on mother ships.(One of the pirates told me that they got info from AIS) Keep your LRIT on.

2. If pirates are near and trying to board, do not resist and surrender. There is no point fighting with them as they are normally on drugs.

3. Your Citadel should have enough water, food, first aid for at least 48hrs. Communication system of citadel should be checked (Sat phone and VHF should be installed)

Rest Like many people have already suggested. Give us training on weapons(only volunteers), we dont need security guards. We need weapons(kept in masters custody). Once pirates realize that most of the ship are alert and carrying weapons they will find another job.

yess i m totally agrer to the rest of the comments non lethal weaponss.. wastage of time, money… and some times livessss….. just give me mp5 or Ak47 … and only me is enough for the bad guysss.. the piratesss

All is non lethal , why ? they are using rpg non lethal when they aim the bridge before boarding ? better ” kill them all ”

I want to live here

Hi I worked at sea as Bosun 38 years. Thanks god never had incident like pirates, of course many stovais we abail tu manage the situation. Also Barbara port went aut & bough provision & stores. The people ther nice and cool . Few organisations spiling there cuntry reputation . I pray god give them good education.

Ofcourse, weapons such as guns and explosive grenades are prohibited onboard. Your ship will be detained once those weapons are found that’s why “we” seafarers only can use those kind of weapons. FYI, our shipping company only provides razor wires. We only use dummies, razor wire and fire hoses. Or alternatively hire a pirate guard.

Only bazooka can work….fuck the pairates

You can not enter many countries with an armed military on your ship. the solution is you have armed military ships that maintain in International waters. If a large insurance consortium was to maintain a armed soldiers of shore, they could arm a ship in international waters and do helicopter removal of the armoury, so as to never break national laws

Why spray water only? Why not spray them with a liquid which can stick on them and detected in the day AND dark? or maybe the liquid contains extremely fiery curry solution? The LRAD seems to be a brilliant idea – give them a very stinging sensation!

An M134 minigun is the best deterant

We read with keen interest of the anti pirates devices which your esteemed organisation markets and wish to invite you to explore the possibility of nigeria market given the incessant maritime and sea piracy challenges in the Niger Delta region. We are in position to introduce and get business in the maritime industry here and the agencies of government to patronise this devices.

please endeavour to contact us with details and materials for our study and submission subject to your consent to do this business with the undersigned who is our resource person in this matter.

just fit a bunch of 50. cals and howitzers and shoot the pirates they runawy then

The bottom line is most of the pirates do this because they understand that the likelihood of facing lethal resistance is low and the rewards are huge. A few M-4’s in a locker under the Captain’s or Masters control and a few weeks training for a few qualified deck crew would do nicely. Nobody should have to face armed murderers with water hoses or other absurdities listed here. Many of these pirates have grenades and other explosives that will do serious damage unless they are held off and engaged at range. It’s too late when your attackers are alongside and threaten the ship with a few blocks of semtex. For those jurisdictions that want to make a fuss, that would stop in a hurry if the shipping companies simply refused to enter ports along shipping lanes with heavy pirate activity

It would be better if the countries that this ships passes through have an agreement with each other (to allow weapons on board) to avoid breaking of laws. Because it would be inappropriate for you to be fighting a beast with a stick. They are reading this and they know you can’t harm them but they can. From captain to the least post on board should be trained on how to use guns and other lethal weapons and they should be allowed to use them on pirates! Or else piracy will continue, kidnapping and killing of sailors also. While there international law will be there and can’t found out the culprit.

This is absolutely stunning that these are the only options to deter men that are clearly willing to kill those onboard the ship you want to defend. There must be some way to allow international shipping with a SMALL amount of defensive LETHAL firepower.

I think the shipbourne launcher could be a good idea. They’ve been increasing the different kinds of rounds it can use. Including air burst rubber ball grenades, I think a good air burst munition for this sort of thing would be in the idea of a Molotov cocktail. Perhaps a burst munition that would spread A flammable substance across the boat crew that could be lit by a flare from the same Cannon. Putting a Napalm like substance in a skip will surely push the crew out of the skin very quickly. Make sure to have plenty of ammo is hitting a Target moving on the water while you’re moving on the water can be very very difficult. I’ve also seen launchers that could be fitted to fire paintballs filled with teargas like gel. Not sure how effective it would be but I’ve been CS gassed before and that’s a really really unpleasant. Love the idea of the antipersonnel radar weapon hands down one of the best things you can do to make someone feel like they’re on fire is a sure-fire way no pun intended to stop someone. I’ve seen these weapons demonstrated in the US and they are devastating. Former Special Forces soldiers were brought to their knees in seconds.

The best solution is to smother the pirates with love. Pirates are people too. Invite them on board for tea and scones. Invite them to come and visit you at home, maybe for thanksgiving. Give them a small gift for coming and watch their little faces light up with sheer joy. Remember, treat them as you would want to be treated. Then let ’em have it with a long burst fro an M16. Make sure you wish them a Merry Christmas !

These non-lethal weapons may seam more humane, but they are not.

Pirates have no problem killing innocent people. Using these weapons puts the life of the next crew that passes these waters in danger. It is morally superior to remove the threat to innocent people than to protect the lives of pirates who have no problem killing innocent people.

Also, increasing the chance of death for pirates will deter future pirates more than simply making it more difficult for the imminent attack to take place.

Having just sailed for over a week through the pirate areas off Yemen and Somalia, what are we doing to stop them? Absolutely nothing. Machine guns, plus other weapons which are lethal at a distance, are the only things which will work. Shoot all of them, then send the bodies back to Somalia in the vessel they arrived in. The trouble is, there’s now a big industry of protecting vessels from piracy. Stuff them, and send in a few U boats while we’re at it. A bunch of savages is holding the world’s shipping to ransom.

All the governments of the world have an army! These armies are armed to the teeth with weapons because that is how you fight violence, terrorism, dictators and criminals!

They expect us to use jet washers, loud noises and bright lights or hide in a sealed box and wait for rescue that may never happen, against all eyes and teeth, skinny scumbag cowards with machine guns who are looking to kidnap, kill or behead us and destroy our way of lives.

These cowards still carry on with the fully armed Navy war ships in the vicinity! How ridiculous can it get? They should be blown out of the water in an instant in the name of human rights! Good decent human beings ‘human rights’!

They can operate freely loaded to the hilt with guns but, if you have a gun on a yacht it is a major hassle?

There should be a worldwide law to allow yacht owners to possess weapons of their choice locked up on board and no chance of prison for killing a pirate, hijacker or thief that tries to board your vessel.

What is the mindset of creating “non-lethal” methods of thwarting pirate attacks, when the pirate has no qualms about blowing your brains out with a rifle or pistol? The best method is to KILL THEM BEFORE THEY BOARD AND KILL YOU, and so they don’t continue to be a lethal problem for other ships at sea. Why not nail them mercilessly with a .50 caliber machine gun mounted on the deck? I just don’t get such a viewpoint that it’s okay to let them kill you, but be a nice guy and not kill them?

I was thinking about a design by where a flame throwing device could be manufactured to be operated manually or from a safe distance by the crew of a large ship. I was going to suggest Molotov cocktails, but it was already there.

In regards to non-lethal weaponry, if Pirates are attempting to board Your large vessel, rest assured They will kill You if told to so fighting fire with fire is only fair. After all, They are the Aggressors.

I’m a retired 30-year naval intelligence professional. I’ve been reading about this piracy situation it seems like forever. My suggestion is to have the U.N. warn the Somalis (and other perpetrators of this practice) to “cease and desist” their piracy practices. When this warning is ignored, as it will be, then the U.N. should stand-up an international anti-piracy taskforce, composed of all countries whose ships pass through piracy-prone areas, with the mission of destroying every boat from the high water mark to 100 NM inland. Draconian you say, Yes!, but an effective, direct action solution to a problem that has been plaguing sea-borne commerce since the beginning of time.

I read theses solutions and they are all a joke. Just kill them. Not so long ago merchant ships were armed and no one thought anything of it. Now in the absurd namby pamby nanny world we live in, no one can defend themselves. Why can’t any vessel transiting the waterways of the world be arm as it sees fit? Why is it a problem when you pull into a port with weapons that are secured, and they want to arrest you? Are they going to help you when you are 30 miles offshore and defenseless? No vessel should go anywhere without a centerfire semiautomatic rifle and a shotgun, at a minimum. This is ridiculous. If you don’t care to go armed, well, then don’t. But don’t require that I cannot defend myself. It’s utterly absurd.

What is missing from the comments is the fact that increasing weapons on the ship could create a mini “arms race”. Pirates will expect more firepower, so they will BRING more firepower. For example, they may start shooting from a distance, launch an RPG, etc., in the same way that an increase in personal firearms in the home INCREASE the danger and risk of death and injury.

the cargo ship is a moving castle for gods sake. How about hot tar, dropping a big cannon ball into their boat with a moveable ramp. I know i wouldn’t want gas poured on me and seeing a dude with a ronson lighter in his hand above me. How hard can it be? Hell built a trebuchet if you must, does no one watch game of thrones?

What about Marine Armor System? It is the onlyest system in the world that really runs

People are generally motivated in actions by the experiences of others – the modern “western” penchant for leniency and other such ridiculous measures only teaches potential criminals that they can get away with piracy etc…..give up the useless ideas and shoot to kill ALL pirates – every time….how many times does the feeble “west” need to be taught this VERY BASIC lesson…..FFS…….!!!

I’m amazed how these americans think that the whole world is like them. “god, guns and guts”. Completely violent misinformed derelicts who are totally ignorant about international laws. Of course. They live in a bubble. My dear gringo friends… You can dream about your guns and your cowboy stories, but the fact is, that fire arms will guarantee you a comfy place in jail in any other developed country, the moment your weapons are found.

Do I think that vessels should be allowed to carry a minimum of lethal “self defense” mechanisms? Yes, of course. But unfortunately, the laws say otherwise and your misinformation and ignorance is overwhelmingly infantile.

Shoot first. (2km+ for a .50 mg.) Shoot to kill. And make sure any survivors have no way to get back to land. Word will get around quickly among the pirates….. and the local sharks, too! 😉

Spraying pirates with water?I don’t think you quite understand if these guys manage to get on to your ship what would happen, these are not guys with a three piece suit rather armed with a gun pointed to your head who will not hesitate to pull the trigger and strip the ship for a few dollars, you should be armed to the teeth with machine guns and at least shoot out their vessel to sink it, some of these guys dont play games and don’t care! Spray them with water!??

If shippers were smart they would all quit making deliveries in such areas. Anyone that does deserves what they get. If we stop bringing merchandise they will have to allow guns on board. I love how some guy calls us trigger happy gringos with guns. What are you talking about you racist jerk??? We’re facing murderous killers that won’t hesitate to kill us and take our life ! They also have rocket launchers! Yes having guns is the only solution you (whatever you are) I’ll keep my mouth shut! The fact is why bring a castle full of money and merchendice anywhere that allows you to be killed? Let them starve and see how quick they change their mind. I’ve spoke to people about these non leathal weapons and can assure you they don’t help much at all against well determined pirates. They will shoot the hoses you have with guns and render them useless as well as any other device you may have. If they want to get on board they are getting on board and they are prepared for all the non leathal elements you throw at them and meet every one of them with deadly force. They have there own ladders and speedboats and large blankets to put over barb wire and earplugs for sounds and will shoot at anything you point at them! They know they will live and you will die. Facts

I am a lawyer and it seems the only obstacle to properly arming a merchant ship are the various laws prohibiting bringing weapons into a nation’s port. Yet the port nation is in business and needs the import of goods, while the flag nation of the merchant ship is likewise in business and needs to deliver goods. It is in the interest of both the port and shipping nations to solve this problem — a problem best solved by a UN treaty agreed to by the nations affected which provides an international law allowing the safe but effective arming of merchant shipping. The nations involved will be compelled to work out a solution or lose business!

Cunard’s Queen Anne Arrives In Forth Port on Her Maiden Visit

  • May 27, 2024

Queen Anne

Cunard’s new cruise ship, the Queen Anne, sailed into the River Forth in Edinburgh on Sunday, May 26, with a water cannon salute led by local piper Louise Marshall to mark the ship’s maiden voyage into South Queensferry.

Rob Mason, head of cruise for Capital Cruising said: “We are thrilled to have Cunard’s brand new ship call into the river Forth. She is a magnificent vessel and we extended a very warm Scottish welcome to her and her guests as they arrived into South Queensferry early this morning. Scotland’s cruise business contributes significantly to the economy, supports hundreds of jobs and delivers benefits to local businesses and communities. This is our busiest cruise season ever as passengers and ship lines choose our ports and anchorages to access the vast variety of attractions that Scotland has to offer including our UNESCO capital City of Edinburgh.”

The Queen Anne is currently sailing its 14-night The British Isles Festival Voyage, sailing roundtrip from Southampton. After departing Edinburgh, the ship will call in  Kirkwall, Scotland; Invergordon, Scotland; Greenock (Glasgow), Scotland; Belfast, Northern Ireland; Liverpool, England; and Cork, Ireland before returning to Southampton on June 7.

Take That! High-Tech Ways To Fight Off Pirates

Jon Hamilton 2010

Jon Hamilton

Modern pirates are creating a market for modern pirate repellents.

The owners of ships that ply the dangerous waters near Somalia are looking at options including slippery foam, lasers, electric fences, water cannons and high-intensity sound.

As this researcher demonstrates, once a surface — like a ship's deck or stairs — is coated with the slippery foam, it's impossibly to walk or climb even with the aid of a harness.

A man slips on stairs sprayed with an anti-pirate slick foam

Ship owners will try just about anything except guns.

That's because most shipping companies still don't want guns on board their vessels, for a variety of reasons. Crews aren't trained to use them, and they can be dangerous if a ship is carrying cargo that burns, like oil or gas. Also, many ports refuse entry to armed ships.

So civilian mariners have been exploring other approaches. They've already shown that a blast from an ordinary fire hose can discourage an unwelcome visitor.

And now there's something much more powerful.

The Force 80 Water Cannon.

"The Force 80 Water Cannon is a stainless steel, remote-controlled squirt gun," says Roger Barrett James, director of international sales and marketing for the Swedish company Unifire.

The Force 80 is no ordinary squirt gun, he says. It has a 3-inch nozzle that can send1,400 gallons a minute 100 yards in any direction.

A boat demonstrates the high-power water hose designed to keep pirates at bay.

"It is a tremendous force of water that will knock over anything in its path and will also flood a pirate's ship very quickly," James says.

And since the Force 80 can be controlled from inside the ship, using video cameras and a joystick, pirates can't easily shoot the person operating it.

James says Unifire is working with Raytheon to integrate the water cannon with a system that uses the ship's radar to detect small vessels before they get too close.

Another anti-pirate device is the Mobility Denial System, a slippery nontoxic foam that can be sprayed on just about any surface.

A man slips on a surface sprayed with anti-pirate coating.

Ron Mathis, senior program manager of Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas, says the foam was developed for the Marine Corps to control unruly crowds. But, he says, he's optimistic about selling some for "the pirate application."

The idea would be to spray the pirate's vessel as it approached, or to coat ropes, ladders, steps and the hull of the ship that's under attack.

Mathis says walking on a surface that has been sprayed is like walking on ice. Climbing steps becomes nearly impossible. And ladders are out of the question.

If water cannons and slippery foam aren't enough, there's always the Long Range Acoustic Device, or LRAD.

The LRAD, long ranging acoustic device, is used to deter bad guys with sound.

It's a high-powered directional loudspeaker that allows a ship to hail an approaching vessel more than a mile away. And it comes with recordings of useful phrases, like "You must leave the area immediately," in Somali and dozens of other languages.

That keeps harmless fisherman from getting into trouble and gives pirates pause," says Robert Putnam, who handles media relations at American Technology Corp. in San Diego, which developed the LRAD.

"Knowing that they've lost the element of surprise is half the battle," Putnam says. "Most pirate incidents would never occur once they know at that distance that they've been discovered."

For pirates who keep coming anyway, the LRAD has another feature. It's a piercing "deterrent tone" that sounds a bit like a smoke detector alarm.

The tone can be transmitted with enough intensity to cause extreme pain and even permanent hearing loss for anyone directly in the beam of sound that comes from the device.

Putnam says a Japanese destroyer used the hailing function of an LRAD to turn away pirates who were attacking a tanker from Singapore.

But Capt. John Konrad, who blogs for the Web site Gcaptain.com, says no anti-pirate device is perfect.

Ear protection can defeat an acoustic device. Goggles can nullify blinding lasers. Electric fences can be cut.

Konrad, who is in Korea while his next ship is being built, says nothing works unless you know a pirate is on the way. And that can be tricky.

"How do you determine who is a pirate and when the pirate is coming through," he says. After all, pirate ships often look like fishing vessels until the ladders and guns and grenade launchers come out.

So Konrad is a big fan of having ships travel in convoys. That means there are more eyes looking for trouble and that pirates will have a harder time attacking any single ship.

Konrad also likes the idea of unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVS. They can be launched from the deck of a ship, fly high overhead and spot suspicious vessels while they're still a long way off.

"The best case scenario is that you find these vessels early enough that you can get a Navy ship detached to your location and let them handle the situation," Konrad says.

We described the LRAD — the Long Range Acoustic Device — as "a deterrent tone, loud and focused enough to cause severe pain and even deafness if you're directly in its path." In fact, a person would suffer permanent hearing loss only if exposed to the sound for minutes or even just seconds, depending on how loud and far away it was.

Are Water Cannon Effective Against Pirates?

Water cannons have been a staple anti-pirate technology within the industry, being recommended in guidelines such as BMP5. This article will cover the pros and cons of anti-pirate water cannons and their efficiency.

What are Water Cannons?

Water cannons are a non-lethal anti-piracy technology aiming to deter and slow down piracy attacks on ships. Steams of high pressured water are fired at pirate skiffs, which can flood and destabilise them.

Cannons are supplied from the ship's fire mains and are best used remotely controlled from the citadel or bridge. Manual usage is advised against in BMP5 to protect the crew as they would be exposed on the open deck during an attack.

Water is fired at around 5000 lpm (litres per minute) at 10 bar of pressure. These cannons can also have different nozzle settings for the extra spread, which can help fight fires in addition to creating blinding effects for approaching pirates.

There are several pros when it comes to water cannons. Firstly, they are easy to install, which means there is a fast turnaround for ships to have extra protection.

Ships can use water cannons in areas where armed guards can not use their weapons, such as territorial waters.

Water cannons may require all of the ship's pumps and additional power during high-risk situations. Commonly, the ship's entire allocation of fire hose is allocated to anti-piracy defence, meaning that if a fire broke out on board, the crew would have to dismantle the pirate defences before reacting to the fire.

The water pressure of the pumps needs to be adequate to have any effect. Palaemon's CEO, Steve Regis, has first-hand experience of this; "Water cannons form a significant part of a ship's anti-piracy preparations. When the water pressure is up to 10 bar and above, it presents itself as a well-hardened vessel. However, I have seen dozens of times where too many outlets have been daisy-chained together, combined with poor water pressure leading to not much more than a gentle cooling spray."

Another downside is that water cannons may not deter some pirates. If the cannons do not affect pirate ships, some pirates may continue their boarding action if they are heavily armed and no guards are there to offer resistance.

"I have seen dozens of times where too many outlets have been daisy-chained together, combined with poor water pressure leading to not much more than a gentle cooling spray."

The crew must be adequately drilled and have a good observation to use the water cannons with maximum efficiency, spot any incoming attacks, and activate the hoses early to let pirates know they have been seen.

water cannons are a tested method of non-lethal ship defence, so they are recommended by international guidelines such as the BMP5. However, for maximum efficiency, like all other anti-piracy technologies, they should be used in tandem with other defences and a well-drilled crew and up-to-date intelligence when sailing through high-risk areas.

Three Sydney Harbour Water Cannon Tugs to Provide Stunning Salute When P&O Cruises Australia Flagship Pacific Explorer Arrives Home on Easter Monday

Tg

Water cannon tugboat in Sydney Harbour

In one of the most spectacular ship arrivals in Sydney Harbour’s long maritime history, three water cannon tugs will form a guard of honour and escort for P&O Cruises Australia flagship Pacific Explorer as the ship returns to her home port on Monday after an absence of more than two years.

Port Authority of NSW fire tug, Shirley Smith, will take the lead joining two water cannon tugs operated by Engage Towage — Martinique and Fitzroy — with all three sending up huge plumes of water to salute Pacific Explorer’s arrival.

Two other Engage tugs, Cook and Diamantina, will also be on duty carrying out operational requirements for the arrival of a cruise ship in Sydney Harbour.

President of Carnival Australia and P&O Cruises Australia Marguerite Fitzgerald and NSW Minister for Transport and Veterans David Elliott said the spectacular welcome planned for Pacific Explorer would be emblematic of the resumption of cruise tourism and its contribution to the NSW economy.

Ms Fitzgerald said: “Pacific Explorer’s return will be a momentous day that signals the resurgence of cruising in Australia after two difficult years for the businesses and people whose livelihoods depend on it. There could be no better way to welcome Pacific Explorer home than to have the harbour’s tugs out in force to greet her. It doesn’t get more Sydney than that.”

Mr Elliott said: “The people of our great harbour city have been waiting to once again witness the giants of the sea returning to our shores. The sound of their ‘whistles’ echoing through our city will be that little bit more special this time as we welcome home this important industry.

“This will create a real buzz around our ports, whether it be families looking to go on holiday, local suppliers looking to provide the freshest produce, or the hard-working crews who have put in place strong protocols to revitalise the sector.”

NSW Port Authority CEO Philip Holliday said: “Meeting and steering this ship safely back into Sydney Harbour will be one of the proudest moments for the Port Authority – I’m sure there won’t be a dry eye on the ship’s bridge. Our cruise terminals are ready, our teams are ready, and we cannot wait to roll out the welcome mat for the first time in two years.”

Mark Malone, Director Engage Towage said: “Engage Towage is very proud to be associated with Carnival Australia and its affiliated brands and, after weathering the absence of cruise ships for over two years, is excited to be involved in the celebration of the return of cruise shipping”.

Pacific Explorer is scheduled to arrive at Sydney Heads at approximately 9.30am on Easter Monday before making her way to the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay to be alongside at approximately 10.30am.

Port Authority of NSW fire tug, Shirley Smith, will take the lead joining two water cannon tugs operated by Engage Towage — Martinique and Fitzroy — with all three sending up huge plumes of water to salute Pacific Explorer’s arrival .

“Pacific Explorer’s return will be a momentous day that signals the resurgence of cruising in Australia after two difficult years for the businesses and people whose livelihoods depend on it,” said Ms Fitzgerald.

“There could be no better way to welcome Pacific Explorer home than to have the harbour’s tugs out in force to greet her. It doesn’t get more Sydney than that.”

P&O

“The people of our great harbour city have been waiting to once again witness the giants of the sea returning to our shores,” commented Mr Elliott.

“The sound of their ‘whistles’ echoing through our city will be that little bit more special this time as we welcome home this important industry.

“This will create a real buzz around our ports, whether it be families looking to go on holiday, local suppliers looking to provide the freshest produce, or the hard-working crews who have put in place strong protocols to revitalise the sector.”

Pacific Explorer is scheduled to arrive at Sydney Heads at approximately 9.30am on Easter Monday before making her way to the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay to be alongside at approximately 10.30am.

Is It Actually Safe To Drink The Tap Water On Your Cruise?

W hen planning your dream cruise vacation , many considerations naturally come into mind, especially if it's your first time. Choosing the best cabin to stave off seasickness and figuring out the day of the week to book a cruise for maximum savings are just the start. But amidst the sea of questions (pun intended), you might overlook a seemingly mundane but important question: How safe is the tap water on a cruise ship? While you're surrounded by an ocean of undrinkable saltwater, what's the deal with the water flowing through the ship's plumbing?

Well, you'll be pleased to know that the tap water on cruise ships is sippable, chuggable, gulpable, or however else you consume your liquids. Not only is the water safe to drink, but it also adheres to rigorous standards. Major cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Disney Cruises assure on their respective websites that their water on board is filtered by a portable water system that has been vetted by the Centers for Disease Control and the U.S. Public Health Service's Vessel Sanitation Program. The water that gushes from the faucet in your cabin has been through a series of inspections (twice a year, in fact), which involve the checking of halogen and pH levels to ensure it meets strict safety criteria. So really, you can rest easy knowing that the water on your cruise is as dependable as it is drinkable.

Read more: Unsettling Reasons You May Want To Avoid Taking A Cruise

There's A Lot Of Science Behind Making Cruise Ship Water Safe To Drink

Interestingly, the tap water on cruises comes from seawater, so if you do drink that, you're technically drinking the water the ship is floating on. But don't worry, it doesn't reach your glass until it undergoes a thorough purification process.

Captain James of Royal Caribbean explained in a TikTok video that ships typically employ two main methods to transform seawater into perfectly drinkable water. "The first one is through reverse osmosis. "We take seawater and squeeze it with high-pressure pumps through filters and essentially filter out all the minerals in the salt water," he said. Meanwhile, the second method is akin to a giant tea kettle but on an industrial scale. "What happens is seawater is brought into huge diagonal tubes, and there it's preheated. Once it gets into the vertical piping ... that's where it's evaporated," he explained, noting that the process is not so different from when heating water at home. "We collect that steam, we funnel that off, and that's what you drink and goes into our potable water system on board." Any leftover brine is returned to the sea.

With such sophisticated technology on board, the safety of cruise tap water is beyond doubt. However, Captain James has one piece of advice: "All the water in your sinks, in your toilet, in your shower, it all comes from the same tank. It's all drinkable. Don't drink the stuff from the toilets, though."

When It Doubt, You Can Take Matters Into Your Own Hands

If the idea of sipping straight from the tap on a cruise ship still makes you feel uneasy, that's completely understandable. The CDC recommends sticking to factory-sealed water bottles as your safest best when traveling. However, remember that cruise lines have different policies regarding bringing beverages onboard. Make it a habit to look them up before joining a cruise, lest you want to leave them behind. Take Royal Caribbean, for instance. It allows guests to bring up to twelve 17-ounce bottles or cartons of non-alcoholic beverages. Disney Cruises, on the other hand, permits passengers to bring one unopened water bottle as long as it fits inside a carry-on bag. Meanwhile, Carnival does not allow guests to bring any type of beverage and offers bottled water for purchase: a 12-pack of 16.9-ounce bottles costs $14.95, an 8-pack of 50.72-ounce bottles costs $24.95, and a single 50.72-ounce bottle costs $4.50, not including delivery fees.

For an eco-friendly option, you can also consider bringing a reusable water bottle to fill at the multiple water dispensers and beverage stations scattered throughout the ship. If you're feeling extra cautious, packing a portable water filter also works. Many of these filters also use reverse osmosis technology, effectively removing any impurities left behind. You're essentially ramping up the filtering of cruise tap water when using one, making it doubly safe, allowing you to hydrate without fear and chug to your heart's content.

The Alternative to Huge Cruises? 3 Masts, 28 Sails and Wind Power.

We checked out the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit on a Mediterranean cruise. In this era of gargantuan ships, its elegant clipper design, wooden decks and relatively small size stands out.

By Ceylan Yeğinsu

From the bridge of the three-masted windjammer, the Sea Cloud Spirit , the captain called out the words we’d all been waiting for.

“Let’s set the sails!” he cried, after turning off the engines, while maneuvering to maintain an optimum angle for his 18 deckhands to climb into the shrouds and unfurl the ship’s 44,132 square feet of sails by hand.

Like acrobats, the crew scurried up the masts to the upper topgallant sails that rose nearly 200 feet above us. The ship’s captain, Vukota Stojanovic, later insisted that none of it was for show. “Whenever there is an opportunity to sail, we sail,” he said.

For the next hour, the crew hauled the ropes until the 28 sails were billowing in the wind, propelling the 452-foot-long ship — the world’s largest passenger sailing vessel on which the sails are raised by hand — toward its first port of call, Portofino, Italy.

At a time when cruise lines are packing their ever-more-gargantuan ships with water parks and basketball courts, the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit, with its old-fashioned clipper design and wooden decks, stands out. It is the newest ship from the Hamburg-based Sea Cloud Cruises , and while it is the company’s biggest, Sea Cloud said it wanted to leave space for passengers to connect to the surrounding elements.

“Wherever you are on the ship, it feels like you are sitting on the water,” said Amelia Dominick, 71, a retired real estate agent from Cologne, Germany, who was on her third cruise onboard the Sea Cloud Spirit.

I had arrived for a four-night “taster sailing” from Nice, France, to the Ligurian region of Italy, designed to entice passengers to sign up for a longer cruise. Here’s what I found.

The ship and cabins

The Spirit has many comforts and luxuries, including a fitness center, library, hair salon and a spa with a Finnish sauna that overlooks the sea. The deck layouts are spacious, with nooks carved out for privacy and relaxation.

Sixty-nine spacious cabins have windows that open onto the sea. My room, a junior suite on the third deck, had two large arched windows, mahogany tables, a balcony and a comfortable couch and armchair. The marble bathroom was lavish, with a gold-plated sink and large jetted bathtub.

The elegant interior design is inspired by the original Sea Cloud, built in 1931 for Marjorie Merriweather Post, the American heiress of the General Foods Corporation, with glossy wooden panels and gold trimmings. The Sea Cloud was the largest private sailing yacht in the world before Post handed it over to the U.S. Navy for use as a weather-reporting vessel during World War II. The four-mast, 64-passenger ship has since been restored to its former glory and will sail across the Aegean and Adriatic this summer.

The experience felt authentic — even before the sails were set — with a detailed safety drill. On most cruises, the drill entails a safety video and signing in at an assembly point. But here, passengers put on their life jackets and walked through emergency scenarios that included rationing food supplies and fishing from the lifeboat.

Each day, the sails were set, even during heavy rain and wind speeds over 30 knots. Guests wanting to participate in the rigging are usually invited to do so, but the weather conditions made it too risky for this sailing.

“It was amazing to watch the work go into putting the sails up and down and to experience the wind power pulling the ship so fast without the engines,” said Malte Rahnenfuehrer, a 50-year-old psychologist from Zurich, who was traveling with his partner and two children.

A man with dark hair wears navy blue and white clothing as the captain of a large windjammer sailing vessel. He stands on deck, a walkie-talkie-like device in his hand, beneath the ropes and riggings of the vessel's sails.

The captain

It is rare for cruise passengers to see the ship’s captain after the initial welcome drinks or gala dinner. But Capt. Vukota Stojanovic was omnipresent throughout the cruise, from setting sails to lifeguarding to mingling with guests.

Originally from Montenegro, Captain Stojanovic piloted container ships for years. When he was asked to consider helming the original Sea Cloud nearly 10 years ago, he hesitated because he had no experience sailing. Even after he learned the ropes — and there are 340 ropes (known as running rigging) on the vessel — he was unsure. “I grew to love the sailings, the boats, the crew the lifestyle, but I still felt I belonged on container ships,” he said. “It would be a big adjustment, especially because I would have to shave every day,” he joked.

Eventually, he accepted the opportunity and worked tirelessly to learn how to sail and operate the ship. Today, he keeps an “open bridge” policy, allowing passengers to visit the control room, even when he is wrestling with the wind.

“The crew and the passengers are all part of the experience, and I like to meet people and receive their feedback,” Captain Stojanovic said.

Environment

Sea Cloud Cruises aspires to take a “gentle” approach, using wind power to drive its ships wherever possible, even if that means changing course for optimal weather conditions. When sailing is not possible, the Spirit has two diesel-electric engines that run on low-sulfur marine diesel fuel. The company is also working with ports that have shore power capabilities to plug into the local electric power.

Onboard, there is an emphasis on reusable bottles and paper straws, and crew members separate solid waste to be compacted and removed when in port.

Excursions and Activities

We made stops in Portofino, San Remo, Italy, and St.-Tropez, France, anchoring offshore and getting to land by tender — a contrast to the big cruise ships with their loud horns and thick plumes of exhaust spewing from their funnels.

For passengers wanting to take a dip (there is no pool), the crew marked an area in the water with floats and an inflatable slide. The water was frigid, but many passengers took the plunge from the swimming deck. Guests could also take “Zodiac Safaris” around the ship to get views of the vessel from the water.

water cannon cruise ship

Excursions ranged from food and wine tours to e-biking and beach trips. In Portofino, passengers were free to explore the sights independently, including the Castello Brown Fortress and the lighthouse on Punta del Capo rock. There was ample time to eat meals on shore as the ship did not depart until 11 p.m. Over the summer, the Sea Cloud Spirit will sail to Spain, Portugal, France and the Azores, among other destinations. On Nov. 11, she will depart for St. Maarten in the Caribbean for the winter.

Wherever the vessel goes, said Mirell Reyes, president of Sea Cloud Cruise for North America, the company tries to “stay away from the crowds and ports where big cruise ships spit out 6,000 passengers.”

Summer prices, which include food and beverages, range from $3,995 for a four-night sailing in a superior cabin to $9,420 for a veranda suite. Seven-night sailings cost between $6,995 and $16,495.

As Sinking Cruise Ship Continues to Threaten the Delta, Harder Joins Federal Effort to Remove Dangerous and Abandoned Vessels from Waterways

Rep. harder recently visited the aurora with members of the coast guard and other local officials to hear about their efforts to contain the pollution and protect the delta.

Rep. Harder Hears from Officials about the Sinking Cruise Ship Aurora

Rep. Harder heard from the Coast Guard, California Fish and Wildlife, and other agencies about the status of cleanup efforts, then he boarded the Aurora to observe the damage. Footage of Rep. Harder touring the Aurora and speaking to the Coast Guard and local authorities about the situation is available HERE .

WASHINGTON – Today, following a recent visit to the sinking Aurora Cruise Ship near Stockton which is polluting the Delta, Rep. Josh Harder (CA-9) threw his support behind the Abandoned and Derelict Vessel Removal Act . According to authorities, there are other abandoned and deteriorating ships that are safety hazards in the Delta and must be dealt with before they pollute the water. This legislation would allow the US Coast Guard and Army Corps of Engineers to remove these dangerous vessels from waterways.

“Protecting our water is essential to keeping families, our environment, and wildlife safe,” said Rep. Harder . “I had the opportunity to board the Aurora with the Coast Guard, and I was disturbed to learn there are more neglected boats that could cause even more damage to our waterways. We have to get these hazardous ships out of our waters and hold owners accountable.”

People have been illegally dumping their vessels into the Delta and other waterways, creating a major safety hazard. There is currently no federal law to hold these owners accountable for the removal of the boats and instead, the taxpayers end up with the bill.

Specifically, the Abandoned and Derelict Vessel Removal Act would:

  • Establish a process for determining if a vessel is abandoned before it is removed;
  • Allow the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund to pay for the removal of deteriorating abandoned vessels while holding vessel owners responsible for reimbursing the costs;
  • Mandate that vessels purchased during federal auctions must have proper insurance and the owner must be able to maintain the vessel;
  • Give the Army Corps of Engineers the authority to remove abandoned dangerous vessels; and
  • Establish a central inventory of abandoned and derelict vessels.

Footage of Rep. Harder touring the Aurora and speaking to the Coast Guard and local authorities about the situation is available HERE .
