Live: Road closed after trailer overturns and container slams into house near Bideford

Gammaton Cross remains closed for recovery work this afternoon, Tuesday, June 4. The house is thought to have sustained structural damage.

A road near Bideford remains closed today, Tuesday, June 4, after a lorry flipped and crashed into a house. The collision took place on Gammaton Road on the evening of Monday, June 3.

The road is closed in both directions at Gammaton Moor Cross to allow for the lorry to be recovered. A house was badly damaged by the crash.

Devon Alert said in a post at 12.33pm this afternoon, Tuesday, June 4: "Gammaton Road is closed at Gammaton Cross to the junction to the Bideford road due to recovery of a vehicle. This road is likely to remain closed for 4 hours whilst recovery takes place. Please use alternative routes."

Describing the scene, an eyewitness told DevonLive: "A trailer carrying a massive container overturned and the container smashed into a house at Gammaton Cross. The lorry was in its way to a solar farm nearby and has caused extensive damage to the property.

"They are hoping to recover the overturned trailer and remove the massive container this evening but extensive work has to be done first to prop up the building to prevent total collapse.

"It will look worse tomorrow when the container is moved; they are gathering to 'decide how best to recover it' at 8 am tomorrow, but they have to prop the house up first to stop it collapsing."

A driver who was wanted by police was arrested in Cornwall for a slew of offences. St Austell police pulled the Honda and their checks and tests revealed drugs and other issues.

The motorist was found to test positive for cannabis and also turned out to be uninsured and to have an expired licence. The police's road safety team wrote that the driver was wanted on warrant and has had their vehicle seized.

Devon and Cornwall Police's 'No Excuse' road safety team wrote on X, formerly Twitter : " #HighStreet - Civic at excess speed in a 40 - driver uninsured, expired licence, positive drugs test for cannabis and also wanted on warrant - vehicle seized and driver arrested #NoExcuse #Fatal5 @StAustellPolice ."
