52 of our Favorite RV Bunkroom Renovations

Maybe you’re a full-time traveling family with 4 kids, or maybe you’re retired and just want a space for the grandkids to stay when they stop by to visit you on the road. Either way, a bunkroom is the best way to increase sleeping capacity in a tiny home on wheels.

Obviously the easiest way to renovate a bunkroom space is to choose an RV floorplan that already includes bunk beds. But that’s not the only option.

We’ve included examples below where the renovator added bunk beds into a slide-out, creating beautiful private spaces for their kids (like this fun farmhouse bunkbed by @humbills.homeontherange )

We’ve even seen people re-arrange their sleeping arrangements where the bunks took over the master bedroom and the adults switched to the rear sleeping area of the RV (like the stunning renovation from @wholethompsonlife we showcase at the end of this article)

Speaking from personal experience, we are considering this type of an arrangement in our next RV. Our kids are good sleepers, but if we wanted a late-night snack or wanted to sneak out to sit by the fire with friends, we had to tip-toe past the sleeping boys and hope they didn’t wake up. But if we just moved the boys up front, the rest of the rig would be ours after they go to sleep. Something to consider if you’re feeling adventurous with your renovation and design skills!

Regardless of where the bunk beds are located, there are many simple ways to make the space a little more exciting.

Let’s go through some of our favorite examples below…

Bunk beds don’t have to be drab and boring. Travel in comfort by adding a little bit of your own style to the walls. You can choose to paint entire accent walls, hand-paint detailed murals if you’re a talented artist, or use wallpaper. Our favorite choice is peel and stick wallpaper because it’s so easy to install (and re-install if you don’t quite get it right the first time). And as your kids grow older and you change your style, it’s easy to remove and apply a new design!

Depending on the wallpaper you choose, you might need to be careful of the color of the wall before applying the wallpaper. If you’re installing thin, lighter colored wallpaper on a dark wall, you might end up having some of the dark color bleed through slightly. But before you buy primer and spend time prepping the walls, it might be worth ordering a small sample to see how you like the pattern and see how it looks over top of the RV wall color.

You don’t have expansive, blank walls to work with, so it’s best to avoid dark-colored or overly busy wallpaper. Even though you might be camping out in the woods, we recommend white or light-toned wallpaper for campers. Quality RV wallpaper can be easily wiped down to clean. Depending on your preference, you can go for anything ranging from gentle florals to elegant geometric patterns as you’ll see in the examples below.

We used Loomwell peel and stick RV wallpaper in our own renovation and never had any problems as we traveled 48 states through heat, humidity and sub-zero temperatures. Easy to install, virtually no maintenance (just wipe down).

Perhaps you’re looking to keep a more natural or rustic look in the interior of your RV. After all, you’re traveling in a camper so why not bring a little bit of nature indoors! Exposed wood is one of the easiest ways to add an instant rustic vibe. Once again, be careful of adding full thickness boards or panels to the walls to avoid excessive weight, but even just a few wood accents like the bed railings, ladder or even the slide-out molding can work with this design style.

Light and Airy

Light-toned elegance on wheels, we love these renovations! An RV is already a compact space so there’s no reason to be excessive in adding décor or a busy color or wallpaper that distracts from the simplicity of this lifestyle.

The trick to this minimalistic boho-inspired design is to stay as close to monochrome as possible to create a sense of cohesion. This will also give you room to play with quirky accents such as pillows and throw blankets.

The most popular design style of choice at the moment is farmhouse or “modern” farmhouse. We have a great post on our Favorite Farmhouse Style RV Renovations , but we’ve included a few more bunkroom views for inspiration below.

Industrial Piping

Industrial style pipes are an easy way to add a small hint of modern design vibes in your space. These pipes are both stylish and functional. You can build the ladder and top bunk railing out of pipes which makes the bed sturdy and safe for your kids. Sometimes you have to balance weight and aesthetics so it’s not uncommon to see RV manufacturers using lightweight plastic or thin wood as the bed ladder or railing. Luckily metal piping is relatively lightweight but it’s much stronger than most alternatives.

These ladders and railings should last a lifetime and you’ll sleep better knowing that your kids are safer and hey, the space looks good too!

Metal pipes might be a little too industrial for your liking and although pipes are generally a strong and sturdy solution to building ladders and railings on RV bunk beds, that’s not to say that you can’t use wood (or even combine wood accents with the metal pipes) to create a cozy aesthetic. Many people choose to leave the natural wood colors with a light stain or varnish. Others leave just some wood exposed and paint the rest. Check out these beautiful renovations below to see how they chose to use exposed, natural wood on their bunk beds.

15 Renovation Ideas for an RV with Bunk Beds

This post may contain affiliate links.

When camping with a family or a crowd, bunk beds are a great way to ensure everyone has a place to crash at the end of the day. Whether you have bunks in a corner or a dedicated bunk room, this RV with bunk beds guide will show you many ideas for sprucing up the bunks in your RV.

1. RV Bunk with a Play Area

Before of rv with bunk and storage underneath

Bunk areas can act as both a place to sleep and play. This bunk room has plenty of room for all sorts of activities. A bean bag chair is ready for story time, an ottoman stores toys, and a play table is ready for the next block build.

A peg board holds art supplies on the other side of the room, and a fold-up desk is available for art projects.

2. RV Bunk with a Hidden Desk

rv bunk hidden desk by Ben and Kari Orvis

The Orvis family found ways to make their 2020 Crossroads Sunset Trail 331BH both fun and functional. They added a drop-down desk to an existing bunk to make school on the road easier.

They also added  Ikea storage bins  for extra toy storage. One of my favorite touches is the bunk safety rails made of repurposed pipe fittings.

3. Updated Loft Bunk

updated loft rv bunk bed by Lacey Sullivan

The loft area in this 2017 Jayco Northpoint 377RLBH got an update with new flooring, new curtains, and a tiny side table. A faux-fur rug and a couple of plants warm up the space.

4. Enclosed Bunk Room for Naps

BEFORE rv bunkroom remodel by MacKenzie Aldrich

As the parents of twins, the Aldrich family needed their bunk area to have more separation for bedtime and naps. When they renovated their 2013 Forest River Salem, they added a wall to enclose the bunks, making a room just for the kids.

5. Open Basic RV Bunks

open rv with bunk beds by Nicole Rushing

You may have to get creative about installation options if you don’t already have an RV with bunk beds. In this 1998 South Wind Storm Motorhome, the owners built a set of basic open bunks in the living area.

The bunks blend nicely into the space because the wood is stained to match other elements in the room, and the olive green bedding flows with the color palette.

6. Custom Bunk Beds for Small Kids

custom rv bunk beds by Branson Larson

Sometimes the best option is a custom option. Brandon built custom bunks in his 2010 Outback Sydney 310BHS to accommodate the kids in the back.

A built-in RV bunk ladder makes it easy for little ones to climb on top, and the rail keeps them from rolling out of bed when sleeping.

See more custom-built RV bunk beds in this article .

7. Triple Bunks with Trundle

triple rv bunk beds with trundle by Marjorie Sacks

In this 2014 KZ Spree Super Lite LX 329IK, Marjorie gave the entire rig a clean, bright look. The bunk got painted white, and she added room for a fourth person in the bunk room with a bottom bunk trundle. How clever!

The naturally stained RV bunk ladder makes access to the top bunks super easy.

8. RV Bunk with a Dog Crate

before rv with bunk beds remodel by Danielle Graham

This RV has space for kids and pups. In their 2011 Forest River Wildwood 26TBSS, Danielle and Jason turned a corner with triple bunks into a combo bunk area and puppy crate.

They removed the middle bunk, left the bottom bunk to make the crate extra cozy, and added a swinging crate door.

9. Open Bunks with Bold Accents

open rv bunks by Ganina

The owners of this 2008 Jayco EXP 254 loved the unique open bunk layout. They decided to keep the open bunk layout when they started the renovation. However, they found ways to make it flow with the rest of the new design.

The dark green cabinets ( Essex Green by Benjamin Moore ) echo those in the kitchen area. Fun patterned wallpaper behind the bunks adds a touch of unexpected whimsy to the design.

10. Gender-Neutral Efficient RV Bunk Space

rv kitchen remodel and efficient rv bunk room by @driftless_rv_renovators

The bunk area in this 2011 Dutchman Denali 258BHX may be small on space, but it has everything you need!

Two generous bunks occupy a small area tucked in the corner of the RV. The bunk room has just enough space for a door for privacy and a couple of cabinets with plenty of storage.

Small touches like leather pulls and pennants make this a gender-neutral space that anyone can enjoy.

11. Cozy Boho RV Bunk Space

boho rv with bunk beds roamingwiththewildones

The bunkroom in this 2015 Salem Hemisphere Lite 356QB is full of cozy boho style! The first thing that catches your eye is the bold contrast between black flooring and bright white walls.

The owners used wood accents to warm up the space, like a wicker storage shelf and stained wood trim on the bunks. The bottom bunk is just tall enough to accommodate a few bins for extra storage.

12. Double Bunk with Open Hanging Storage

rv double bunk by Shalina Johnson

RV bunk rooms can often accommodate from two to four people, but they often fall short when it comes to clothing storage space. To solve this issue, these 2015 Forest River Cherokee owners added a “closet” by fashioning hanging bars out of pipe fittings. Such a clever solution!

13. Minimalist Bunk Space

fifth wheel remodel bedroom with bunk beds

The Pitmans’ love of minimalist and Japanese style is evident throughout their 2019 Forest River Impression 27MKS.

In the bunkroom, they painted the walls a soothing dark color and accented it with light wood trim around the closets. The bunk bed is simple in design and made of light wood that mirrors the trim color.

14. Triple RV Bunk Master Bedroom

triple rv bunk beds by Casie and Igor Tomaz

If you have more than two kids, tiny bunkrooms can be lacking in space and storage. Renovating duo Casie and Igor solved that issue by turning the master bedroom of this 2005 Gulf Stream Vacationer into a triple bunk room.

Custom-built beds provide plenty of sleeping space and loads of storage. In addition to their storage drawers, the kids also share a closet situated in the corner.

15. Twin Bed Master Bedroom

twin bed master bedroom by @danniellejoy

For another take on a master bedroom to bunkroom conversion, check out this room that left the traditional stacked beds behind.

The owners of this RV removed the large bed in the master and replaced it with two white twin beds. The shared night table is the perfect place to sit an alarm clock or charge a device. Tropical wallpaper, pink bedding, and coordinating pink lights add plenty of color to the space.

RV Bunk Bed Conversion Ideas

travel trailer bunkhouse remodel

After You’ve Found Your Family RV

Once you’ve chosen a bunkhouse, or even a mid-bunk model, creating the sleeping space that’s ideal for your family just takes a little creativity, time, and effort.

In each rig we’ve purchased, one non-negotiable for us has been for the kids to have their own permanent sleeping space. We have never wanted kids sleeping on the living room couch on a pull-out bed at night. Instead, we wanted them to have their own rooms, just like they would in a house environment. For us, the separation of space has always been a top priority.

Get Creative With Your Space

Our current rig is a Keystone Cougar 368mbi mid-bunk fifth wheel. When searching for our latest rig, we wanted a separate sleeping area for our girls and boys and knew our teen girls would appreciate a room with a door they could close for some privacy. There are several mid-bunk options on the market, but unfortunately, most mid-bunks on the market don’t come with built-in bunks. Instead most come with a sleeper sofa. Since each rig we own becomes our home away from home, our full-time home– a sleeper sofa just won’t cut it for 2 teen girls to sleep on night-after-night.

Because of that, we decided to go ahead and remove the sleeper sofa in the mid-bunk room and add some built-in bunk beds in its place. In addition to the beds, we wanted to add some extra clothing storage too, because our teen girls need a lot of that.

teen girls bunkhouse conversion

How We Modified Our Bunkhouse

First, we took the space and measured the height of the slide in that room. Knowing the height helped us decide how tall each bunk would be. We also factored in how big we wanted the drawers under the bottom bunk to be. Depending on that we took the remaining space, divided it, and that’s the amount we ended up having to work with for the two bunk bed openings.

DIY bunkbed modification

After building a frame along the wall of the slide as the support for the top bunk we added plywood for the bed base. Instead of ordering custom-sized mattresses we purchased queen-sized memory foam mattresses and cut them to size for each of the bunk spaces.

Pro Tip: A bread knife or electric turkey carving knife make quick work of this job!

By adding the bunks in the mid bunk room, and the drawers for additional storage under the bunks, we created a space our girls could truly be comfortable in on the road!

Removing A Pull-Out Couch

When we purchased our first travel trailer we needed the bunk room to sleep five kids. However, we soon realized that was asking a lot from a pull-behind travel trailer! We eventually decided on purchasing a Keystone Passport with a double slide in the bunk room. It seemed to meet our needs in almost every area. It provided the most room to work with of any bunkhouse model we could find on the market. Each slide had a top bunk, so that worked! But, the bottom bunk areas had foam fold-out couches and those really weren’t going to meet our needs adequately.

Because of this, we needed to figure out how two kids could share the bottom bunk areas. After brainstorming our options we ended up finding junior-sized beds at Ikea that would fit our 3 younger kids. These beds were bigger than toddler beds but shorter than twin-sized beds. One of them would fit length-wise perfectly when horizontally slid into the slide.

RV bunk bed conversion twin beds

We went ahead and removed the foam couches and placed one junior bed in one of the slides. On the opposing slide, we placed two junior beds side by side with the headboards in the slide and the beds extending out into the room. This set up allowed each child to have their very own beds as we traveled.

Because of the length of the beds, and how we placed two of them side by side into the slide on one side of the room, on moving days we would have to pick up each bed and horizontally stack them on top of each other whenever we had to bring in the slides. It was a little extra work but totally worth it to make our home on wheels comfortable for our family.

Transforming a Toy-Hauler Into a Bedroom

Our third setup was a fifth-wheel toy hauler. In this rig, we converted the garage space into a shared space as our girls’ room and school space .

This garage space provided one queen bed and a table and benches. Both the bed and the table bench combo were on a hydraulic lift that allowed them both to be raised during the day when not in use. Again, we had to make this space work for numerous children. Since one queen bed wasn’t enough we decided to remove the table and benches and use the frame to create another queen-sized bed. By using the existing frame we only had to add plywood as a base for the mattress. In doing this we increased the sleeping space in that room for an additional 2 people.

RV Bunk Remodel ~ Turning a Class A Master Bedroom in a Bunkroom

Today I’m going to show you how we accomplished our RV Bunk Remodel in our 96′ Winnebago.

We had to do something when we downsized and sold our 5th Wheel.  When we looked at our more frugal option of buying a Class A, we ran into a common problem.  No bunks.

Sure some Class A’s had bunks, but none that could accommodate 4 kids or that were in our price range.  So what is a frugal family to do?  Remodel.

Our kid’s ages range from 8 years old down to 1 year old.

With limited space in an RV, the best option we found was to change the master bedroom into a bunk room.  Most master bedrooms have decent closets and ours was no exception.

If you’re lucky, you’ll find one of the few RV’s that has a walk-in closet (look for the 2002 Monaco Signature Titan or 2000 Monaco Signature General).  I’ve seen some RVers modify that walk-in closet to make a bunkroom.  They look sweet and allow for the main living area to remain a main living area.  Ours didn’t have one.  Meh…it still suits us well.

Closet Reconfiguration

Post Contents

Since we have 2 older kids (8 yo and 7 yo) and 2 younger kids (3 yo and 1 yo), we opted to take off the closet doors and put bunks in the open closet for the younger two.

Here is the closet mid-remodel of the camper.

master-remodeled-camper-bunk-room-

The closet area is a perfect length for our 2 little ones and measures 53″ long.  I think we will get another couple of years out of that area as bunks.  If we ever decide we want to change the master back to a true master bedroom, we just need to put a pole for hanging clothes back in there and put the closet doors back on.

The top shelf of the main closet area was left in and we use that to store blankets and diapers.  I covered it with a short curtain hung with a tension rod.

Building the Closet Bunks

Mark started out by placing 1X1’s around and framing the bed.  These boards were screwed right into the back wall and cabinets.  He also reinforced the bottom bunk to the floor.

A 2X4 was attached to the front edge of the bed to build up a *box* to hold the mattress.  Next, he cut a piece of plywood to the shape of the bed to lay it into the box.

We decided to raise up the lower bunk so we can store toys and clothes underneath in baskets.

camper-closet-bunks

The above view is obviously without the cushions and the safety rail is still NOT painted.  Chalk that up to the fact that we are real people and living in it.

Tip:  Everything you remodel in a camper while living in it is 10 times harder than if you had done it before you moved in.

Someday, we’ll do all the touch-up painting and paint the rail.

Big Kid Bunks

This is the area where the big kid’s bunks went.

original-camper-master-prior-to-bunk-remodel

Since those kids are bigger, bigger bunks were needed.  They also needed to be freestanding (but secured) because we didn’t want to put too much pressure and weight on the walls.

freestanding-bunk

Mark primarily used 2X4s and made them 61 inches long.  I honestly don’t remember why we chose this weird length except that we were trying to cut costs and save space.

freestanding-camper-bunks

We had to keep in mind the window that their bunk would be up against, the closet doors, and a functional walking path.  These beds work for the kids.  I’ve attempted to sleep on one (don’t laugh!!!!) and it’s obviously not long enough for a grown-up but I think these will suit them for a few years.

What About Mattresses?

For mattresses, we purchased foam from Foam Factory .  We explored all sorts of options for mattresses but Foam Factory was BY FAR the cheapest and best quality we could find.

Since we have a latex allergy in the house, we decided to go with regular foam that was super-stinky and off-gassed for a couple of weeks.  In fact, after we purchased it, I was a little freaked that they would never stop smelling.

Mark took a reciprocating saw and cut the foam to the correct dimensions.

sawing-foam

We enlisted the kids and had them jump up and down on them to force air in and out of the foam.

off-gassing-foam-for-custom-rv-bunks

I’m not sure if it helped or not, but they got some exercise and we had a laugh over it.  Thankfully, it doesn’t smell anymore and we’ve had no adverse effects.

We went with 3″ and 4″ foam and cut it to fit snugly.  To fit our space, we need one queen and one full-size mattress.

So What Will We Do When Our Kids Get Bigger?

We’ve talked about this.  As we see it, we really have 3 options:

  • Upgrade our RV and go back onto a 5th wheel.
  • Move kids to the main living area and make the master a master again.
  • Tear out the closet bunks and build a 2nd freestanding bunk on the other wall.

If we chose #3, we’d move their storage shelves into the closet so we could still have the toy/book storage cubes.

Where do the We Sleep?

We sleep in the main living area.  Our bed came from Ikea and was the only option we found to fit a Queen bed in the camper main living space.  It is a tri-fold bed called PS Havet .

As I showed you previously, we have a raised slide .  Since the sofa bed goes on top of the slide, Mark built a workaround to level out the floor by making planks.  He screwed two 2X4’s together to get the correct height for the wheels of the bed to roll along and rest while the bed is out.

When we’re ready to roll our bed out for the night, we place the wooden planks in front of the wheels.  It works wonderfully.  And the bed is comfy.

So that is it for our master bedroom bunk modifications and main living queen bed.  Hopefully, these ideas help you figure out how best to configure your RV.  I love that we were able to downgrade and make the space perfect for our family.

RV LIFE

Easy Bunkhouse Remodel for Fifth Wheel Trailers

' src=

  • Maintenance, Modifications and Repairs

RVs are homes on wheels that come in all sizes and styles but sometimes a few modifications are necessary for that ideal rig to work with your lifestyle. If you’ve ever considered modifying a RV to better suit your hobbies or work life, here’s one idea you might want to think about: modifying a fifth wheel bunkhouse RV into a workshop or office.

3860n19171b

This RV is made by Northwood Manufacturing . It’s a 2010 Arctic Fox 275B, which is one of the few bunkhouse models that Northwood has produced through the years.

Since Northwood has a solid reputation for producing well-insulated, rugged trailers and fifth wheels, this 275B model can go just about anywhere, during any season.

20140912w_AF275B01

As a family vacation fifth wheel it’s perfect; the bunks are suitable for any small human and even though the rig is smaller than most bunkhouse fifth wheels, it technically sleeps eight people. Not bad for a 27′ RV!

Overall it’s a great RV but there’s a way to make it even better if you don’t need to sleep two little humans in that bunkhouse; get rid of the beds and turn it into a workshop, office, recording studio or children’s play area. Here are things to consider when tackling your own DIY RV bunkhouse remodel project:

20140911w_AF275B02

  Envision your space

Have a strong vision of the finished project. Talk to others who will use the space and figure out where you want things to go. For example, where do you want a desk? A chair? A shelf? A closet? Sketch your ideas out on paper.

Carefully Dismantle the Sleeping Quarters

Use care when taking apart the bed frames and any framing and paneling in the rig. RV manufacturers most often use screws to assemble these pieces so you’ll want to use a long screwdriver to remove them. Remember to salvage any extra usable trim, framing and paneling, you may be able to save money by using these pieces in the remodel.

20141005w_remodel02

Take Care of Electrical

If your bunkhouse needs more electrical outlets, look for where you can tap into existing wiring at the nearest outlet or light, and run wiring to your new locations in the bunkhouse. Use the same gauge wiring that’s already in the RV and be careful not to overload circuits.

Install and Assemble Any New Framing

Your bunkhouse will most likely need some cabinets and storage areas. To build them, always use 1×2 pieces of lumber, not traditional 2x4s typically used for stick house framing projects, since this size is too heavy for most RVs. When working with the 1×2 pieces, pre-drilling your screw holes will prevent the screws from splitting the wood.

20141005w_remodel01

Shop for Recycled Finishing Materials

Stores that sell recycled construction materials are great for adding the finishing touches to your new bunkhouse at a fraction of the cost. Look for home building stores stocked with material salvaged from construction sites. You’ll more than likely be able to find usable materials that are needed to complete elements like storage compartment lids.

RVs get better all the time but the longer you live in one the more you’ll want to turn it into your own personalized space. Thankfully that’s not too big of a project for most RVs and if you have a knack for successfully completing minor home upgrade projects you can do a lot with a rig like this one.

We’ve all heard of RVers retrofitting their coaches with bunk beds, but have you ever considered an RV bunk bed conversion in reverse?

Fortunately, there are many amazing ways to repurpose a bunk area. When you no longer need the extra sleeping space, RV bunk bed conversions are a great way to customize your rig.

Maybe you’re an empty nester whose children have moved on to their own adult lives. Or perhaps you work from the road and desperately need office space. Depending on your family’s needs, bunk beds may not be the best use of space.

If your two-legged children have left home, you may want to convert the bunk space into a pet-friendly haven for your four-legged travel companions.

Or perhaps, you’re the opposite of empty nesters, and your children are still very little. We have some great ideas for how you can convert that RV bunk space into a crib that’s safe for your baby or toddler.

If you love your travel trailer or motorhome but want to make better use of your limited square footage, an RV bunk bed conversion might be for you. We’ll show you some great ideas on what else you can do with that space.

Why RV Bunk Bed Conversions Make Sense

Why RV Bunk Bed Conversions Make Sense

As my dad always says, “It’s your house, you have to live in it.” That same advice can be applied to RVs as well. If you spend a lot of time in your RV, then customizing it to meet your specific needs only makes sense. Converting an unused RV bunk bed area is one of the most impactful ways to do just that.

Bunk beds are a popular feature, in part because that space is adaptable as your family grows and changes. Many bunk spaces already have hanger rods and/or fold-up top bunk features for this exact reason.

Sometimes an RV bunk bed to closet or storage conversion is as simple as taking advantage of features already installed in that space. Even if your desired remodel requires removing the bunks entirely, converting this space can still make a lot of sense.

Removing bunks is a relatively uncomplicated DIY project with a lot of bang for your buck. Performing an RV bunk bed conversion into a space you can use is a great way to enhance your RV lifestyle.

How To Remove RV Bunk Beds

How To Remove RV Bunk Beds

Of course, the first step in the RV bunk bed conversion process is to remove the bunks themselves. But how? This construction project can be daunting but don’t be intimidated. In many cases, removing the bunks is a relatively straightforward process.

The first step is to consult your owner’s manual. It should help you determine if there are any wires or plumbing concealed beneath the bunks. If there are, you should disconnect your battery and unplug your camper as a safety precaution. You do not want to risk shorting wires during the demo.

The presence of wires or pipes may also impact your design plan. Rather than hire an electrician or plumber to reroute those utilities, you may opt to hide these fixtures within a cabinet or beneath a raised floor.

Fortunately for novice DIYers, most bunks are not permanently anchored to the frame. But resist the urge to channel your inner Chip Gains or Gallagher and take a sledgehammer to that unwanted fixture.

RVs are built more delicately and, therefore, require a systematic approach. In most cases, disassembly is as easy as removing a few screws and staples.

You’ll need some combination of the following tools:

  • Safety gear (goggles, dust mask, etc.)
  • Screwdriver or drill
  • A mallet or hammer
  • A prying tool (crowbar or hardware staple remover)
  • An oscillating cutting tool with a carbide blade (not always necessary)

Before you dive in, you’ll want to protect the surrounding area with drop clothes and painter’s tape.

Begin by removing the bedding and mattresses. Once the mattresses are out of the way, look for any bolts connecting the top and bottom bunk. You’ll want to remove these before anything else.

If you have a ladder and/or safety rail, disassemble those using a screwdriver or electric screwdriver. Next, gently pry off the paneling sheet on the top and bottom of the bunk frame. This should expose the plywood base of the bunks.

Find and remove the screws holding the plywood in place and carefully lift the wooden platform out. Depending on your design plan, you may want to leave the structure of the bottom bunk intact. In this case, only remove the plywood on the upper bunk.

The 2 x 2 frame of the bunk should now be visible. Examine the frame to determine how it’s anchored to the wall and remove the screws holding it in place. You may need to cut any hidden screws with your oscillating saw. Consider leaving a portion of the wood frame affixed to the wall to anchor any new furniture you plan to install.

Clear out all of the demoed debris and inspect the walls for screw holes and scratches. You’ll want to apply wall putty, wallpaper, or paneling to give the area a finished look.

5 RV Bunk Bed Conversion Ideas

1. rv bunk bed to pet bed conversion.

RV Bunk Bed To Pet Bed Conversion Ideas

If you have a four-legged travel companion, a great RV bunk conversion idea is to transform the bottom bunk into a pet sanctuary. For larger dogs, this space is usually the right size for their bed. If you have a smaller furry friend, you might be able to fit all of their gear in this spot.

You may need to lower the bunk a bit for smaller, or older pets. Otherwise, consider adding bedside stairs to make it easier to access. When making your RV dog or cat friendly , don’t forget about the potential for storage underneath the bottom bunk. This can be a great place to install a drawer for food dishes, or leash and toy organization.

If you have a pet who can’t quite be trusted to roam free while you’re away, you can enclose the bottom bunk to create a true kennel space for Fido. Whether you use a tension-based baby gate or install a more substantial wall-anchored metal pet door, it’s relatively simple to cordon off this space.

2. Converting RV Bunk Beds To Storage

Converting RV Bunk Beds To Storage

One of the most straightforward, easily reversible, RV bunk bed conversion ideas is repurposing that space for storage. Often motorhome bunk spaces already have rods for hanging clothes built right in. Proper bunkhouses, more commonly found in towables, have even more room for storage.

When transforming a bunk area into a storage room, consider whether or not you’d like to still be able to use the bunks as beds on occasion. There are tons of totes and collapsible bins that can be set on the bunks and used as pseudo drawers. You can simply remove these containers when you have an overnight guest.

Another option is to remove one or all of the bunks completely. This will allow you to transform the space into customized storage. Some RVers have built walk-in closets or pantries.

If you use video or other specialized equipment, you may find it helpful to create a storage space tailor-made for your industry-specific gear.

3. Changing A Bunkhouse To An Office

Changing A Bunkhouse To An Office

Perhaps the most popular RV bunk bed conversion idea is to transform that space into an office. With the increase in people working or attending school remotely, the demand for desk space within an RV has never been greater. While some RVs include office space, others have to be retrofitted with desks, chairs, computers, and the like.

A bunkhouse offers an entire room you can dedicate to remote working. There is often enough space for multiple desks and any auxiliary equipment you might need. Some RVers have even opted to leave one set of bunks and convert the other set to an office area. This creates an office-by-day/bedroom-by-night multipurpose space.

What if the idea of an onboard office intrigues you, but you don’t have a whole bunkroom to work with? Never fear, there are plenty of ways you can create a cozy workstation in place of a single bank of bunk beds. You’ll probably want to start by removing all or part of the bunk frame. Then install a small desk, chair, and divider. Once it’s all in place, you’re good to go!

Retirees may also appreciate a desk area. Even if they aren’t working from the road, an office space doubles as a great hobby room or a good place to sit and video chat with the family.

4. Create A Camper With 2 Master Bedrooms

Create A Camper With 2 Master Bedrooms

Another, less thought-of, RV bunk bed conversion option is to reimagine the space as a second master bedroom. Bunks are best suited for kids. Whether you plan to travel with your parents, adult child, or friends, converting that space to one large bed rather than multiple smaller beds sometimes just makes more sense.

This design option works especially well if you have a separate bathroom near the bunkroom. Then everyone can truly have their own space. If you’re a snowbird who leaves family behind during the cooler months, creating a proper guest room might even encourage more visitors.

RV bunk bed conversions are not just for empty nesters. Reconfiguring the bunk room is sometimes the best option, even with young children. Many bunkhouses have four beds, while the average American family has less than three children.

If you have fewer children than beds, you can use that extra space for anything from school desks to toy storage. Opt for a room divider and viola, now you have a three-bedroom camper .

5. How to Convert an RV Bunk Bed into a Crib

How to Convert an RV Bunk Bed into a Crib

While we’re on the topic of converting RV bunk bed areas into more custom bedroom spaces, let’s take a look at how you could also repurpose bunks into a nursery.

The easiest option is to simply install a crib rail across one of the bunks. A tension-based baby gate or a railing anchored directly to the wall both work well. We prefer to anchor the crib rail to ensure it stays firmly in place even when our daredevil toddler does not want it to.

Transforming a bunk to a crib allows you to avoid using valuable floor space for a pack-and-play. This option is also great because it can grow with your child. When they no longer need a crib, simply remove the rail, and ta-da, you have a regular bunk again.

If you’re full-time in your RV, or even if you’re not, you may desire more of a proper nursery space for your baby. Many on-the-road parents have opted to remove the bunks completely and put a freestanding crib in their place. This option also gives you more flexibility as far as toy and clothing storage. There are some truly beautiful RV nurseries that have been created out of bunk spaces.

How Do I Add More Sleeping Space To My RV?

How Do I Add More Sleeping Space To My RV

By now, you’re probably enticed by the idea of reclaiming some of that underused bunk space. But you may not be ready to fully commit to an RV that sleeps just two.

What if your older kids actually want to join you for a weekend? What happens when the grandkids are old enough for a sleepover? If these are concerns you have, consider an RV bunk bed conversion that utilizes multipurpose furniture.

The Expand Furniture Dormire Couch Transformer is a great place to start. This amazing sofa pops up into bunk beds in seconds. Whether you choose to place this magical piece of furniture where the bunks once were or simply replace an existing sofa is up to you.

If you have a freestanding table and chairs, that’s another great place to consider using convertible furniture. By installing a traditional dinette/bed instead, you’ll recover your RV’s sleeping capacity even if you’ve repurposed the bunkhouse into something else entirely.

Additional Considerations Before Remodeling

An RV bunk bed conversion can be an exciting blank slate. There are so many possibilities for that space. In all your enthusiasm, take care to consider weight, specifically the Unloaded Vehicle Weight (UVW or “Dry Weight”) and Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) changes in your remodeling plans.

Regardless of your design vision, your RV is only rated to carry so much. Be careful that whatever you install in place of bunks, you don’t exceed the weight capacity of your rig.

Any alterations you make could also impact the tongue weight of your towable. Typical packing advice says you should concentrate the bulk of your load towards the front of the trailer to prevent sway . Since most bunkhouses are located in the rear, you should avoid installing particularly heavy structures there.

Final Thoughts On RV Bunk Bed Conversion Ideas

travel trailer bunkhouse remodel

RV bunk bed conversions make it possible for your RV to grow with your family’s needs. From a crib and nursery to a kid’s bedroom, to a space for a grown child to come back home, there are countless options. Once you enter the empty nester phase of life, a home office or hobby room might be the perfect use of that space.

If you incorporate convertible furniture into your remodel, you can preserve the ability to host guests. Dual-purpose furniture provides sleeping options without you having to sacrifice the square footage you’ve only recently reclaimed.

While bunk beds are a coveted RV feature, they are only fully utilized for a brief period of time. Considering one of the countless RV bunk bed conversion options can prolong and enhance the usability of your rig.

8 Brilliant RV Renovation Ideas You Have to See to Believe

Everyone loves a transformation.  After all, it’s what all good stories have in common:  Cinderella becomes a beautiful princess, Mulan becomes a warrior hero, the geeky kid becomes Spiderman… we love them all.

And fabulous remodels capture us in the same ways.  We love HGTV shows like Fixer Upper, the Property Brothers, Extreme Home Makeover, to name a few.  But the latest craze to hit Pinterest is RV Renovations. RV enthusiasts like just can’t resist seeing how people transform their boring and drab RV interiors into beautifully unique homes on wheels.

While Pinterest is the go-to search engine for home decor ideas, I recommend Instagram for finding your next RV interior inspiration.  You can search hashtags like #rvrenovation, #rvremodel, #rvinspiration and #cozyonwheels for all the eye candy you can handle.

That’s just what I’ve been doing and I am excited to share with you some of my personal favorite RV Renovations that you just have to SEE to believe!

RV Renovations

#1: @simplecatlady | bethany.

What we love:  The neutral palette with pops of color.  Black and white with wood tones feel classic and cozy at the same time.  Plus, she painted her DOOR! Who does that? She did and she’ll make you want to paint yours too!

simplecatlady3

This cozy renovated living room hardly feels like it’s in an RV.

simplecatlady2

This small RV kitchen is light and airy thanks to the painted cabinets.

Bethany says her favorite part of the renovation is the living room:  “Painting the walls, cabinets, replacing the furniture, adding some wallpaper, and adding decor made such a huge difference. The space went from looking like a camper to looking like a home!”  We couldn’t agree more!

#2: @leeannieblivin | LeeAnn

What we love:  Where do we start?  There is so much to love about this RV renovation.  How about the plants!? The greenery in this space adds so much life!

The surprises in this RV just keep coming, from the choice in wallpaper to the mural in the bathroom.  I mean, who wouldn’t want to stay in bed all day in this master bedroom?

leannieblivin1

This small RV window nook is a show stopper!

leannieblivin5

This light fixture is a unique detail in the window nook.

leannieblivin3

All the plants make this corner POP!

leannieblivin4

The mural in this tiny RV bathroom proves that with a little creativity, even small windowless rooms can have greenery.

LeeAnn shares that her inspiration came from seeing other renovated RVs on Instagram.  She states “With my own designs I am greatly inspired by mid century details and decorating with plants.  Any new piece I get for the trailer I think, ‘How can I design a plant around this?’”

#3: @shelbyadrift | Shelby

What we love: The boho beach feel of this RV make it feel like a getaway in and of itself.  The unique pieces like the woven kitchen rug and the dining room light fixture make this renovation one-of-a-kind.

shelbyadrift1

From the kitchen rug to the macrame on the window, the decor invites you in.

shelbyadrift2

The turquoise mini-fridge adds a nice pop to this renovated RV kitchen.

shelbyadrift3

This DIY breakfast nook reminds me of sipping coffee on a deck overlooking the beach.

Shelby found her inspiration from beach themes, sharing “A big inspiration for our RV was the design book Surf Shack by Nina Freudenberger. We discovered we would be stationed in Southern California so the design style was fitting.”

Of the decor, Shelby states, “The majority of our decor was DIYed or thrifted. For example, I made our curtains from Turkish towels and bamboo rods, our kitchen pendant light is made from a $5 straw hat I thrifted, flipped upside down and strung a light through.”

#4: @my2ndhandhome | Mariah

my2ndhandhome1

From the longhorn art to the cheeky sign, this renovated RV bathroom shows that even the tiniest of spaces can be beautiful.

my2ndhandhome2

The simplicity of this vanity is what makes it so beautiful.

my2ndhandhome3

Tiny spaces for tiny humans: the green wall adds the perfect pop of color to this renovated bunk room.

my2ndhandhome4

We just love when people replace their RV furniture with unique finds, and this daybed-turned-couch is no exception!

Mariah shares of the renovation, “my favorite part has to be a tie between our son’s bunkhouse, which we’ve made special just for him, and our bathroom.”

But renovating an RV isn’t easy!  “There was a time that we had been working so, so hard, and looked around and realized we were not even close to done, not even close to half-way finished! We’re so glad we kept going through those tough days that felt like they were never going to end… because now, looking back, we’re SO thankful we kept going.”

#5: @mrsmaddiehart | Maddie

What we love:   The bold use of color with the mix of modern and repurposed furniture finds.  This RV remodel is unlike any other!

mrsmaddiehart1

Did you see the hidden surprise under the kitchen counter?  It’s a built in dog kennel!

mrsmaddiehart2

A wing-backed chair is a bold choice for a remodeled RV living room, but a pink one?  It just works!

mrsmaddiehart3

The lime-green with the black and faux marble and… hold on… is that  double sink in an RV???

Mariah tells us that “Most of my decor finds are from thrift stores and second hand shops. We’ve brought home things from our travels as well so I have a couple pieces from Mexico, Thailand, Korea, Romania and Kuwait!”

#6: @lizolszewski | Lizzie

What we love:   Even though this RV is painted mostly white, the rugs and furnishings make the whole place feel warm and inviting.   The eclectic decor makes this renovated RV feel like home.

lizolszewski1 e1566486631665

Even the dog looks at home in this renovated RV.

lizolszewski2

The tan couch and oriental rug contrast the white paint providing both a cozy and bright feel to this RV living room.

lizolszewski3

This renovated RV has an open and comfortable vibe.

When asked what inspired the renovation, Lizzie states, “We’ve always loved the idea of going tiny. We are very environmentally-conscious and wanted to live with a smaller footprint. We then started following RV bloggers on Instagram and we realized from their stories that living in a homey, well put-together tiny house was possible even with a smaller budget.”

#7: @foxandtimber | Nikki

What we love:  The creative use of space in this Toy Hauler Travel Trailer with no slide outs is inspiring to say the least!  From the gorgeous herringbone tabletop, to the open shelving, to the buffalo paid, there’s something to love for everyone in this innovative RV renovation.

foxandtimber1

This herringbone tabletop with the leather throw pillows make this renovated dining space so inviting!

foxandtimber2

This tiny RV kitchen has a farmhouse feel with the open shelving and the barn door cabinets.

travel trailer bunkhouse remodel

The real surprise of this renovation is that it is a Toy Hauler!  Those garage bunks can sleep 4 kids and go up to the ceiling when not in use!  WOW!

Nikki shares that she was inspired by Instagram for this RV renovation and wanting to make it feel as much like home as possible.  In regards to decor? She states, “I am huge Amazon girl. Most things these days can be found there. But I also love to shop small so several items of décor are from small shops.”

#8: @baconsontheroad | Mallory

What we love:  The bunkhouse was completely gutted and built from scratch.  The final product? Functional and cute as can be!  And what is with all these gorgeous remodeled RV bathrooms?  This one proves no exception. This renovated fifth wheel will make you swoon!

baconsontheroad1

These guys managed to fit a full-size crib and two loft bunks in their renovated bunk room.  This RV is ready for adventure!

baconsontheroad2

The clean white RV kitchen with custom butcher block counter- need we say more?

baconsontheroad3

Another gorgeous RV bathroom renovation.

Of the RV renovation, Mallory states, “My favorite part of the renovation was the bunkhouse overhaul for our three little boys (4, 2, 1)! We completely gutted and rebuilt it to better fit our family’s needs. It was so fun to see a space we dreamt about (and spent many late nights planning) come to life!”

What are some ideas to put an office in an RV?

Tearing out a dinette is the most popular option, but there are SO many floorplans and work flows, so it’s likely that all these solutions will be possible. Many people do this to make their space more homey and accommodating to their lifestyle, so you will need to choose what works best for you!

However, here are some workspace ideas I’ll show you today

  • Tear out and replace the dinette
  • Tear out and replace the couch/recliners
  • Use the bedroom (the bed can be the seat)
  • Use the garage area of a toy hauler
  • Custom build a desk insert to create more office space
  • Utilize a fold down desk set up
  • Convert the bunkhouse to an office
  • Create a standing workspace (and mount the monitors up high!)
  • For RVs, use the front seat area
  • Lastly… just buy it already built in!

For more information, scroll to the bottom of this article for a FAQ . To see video tours of some RV home offices, check out this video!

Tear out the dinette and replace it with an office setup

This is the most common solution – dinettes are usually pretty easy to remove and are the perfect size for a small office. If you are able to custom build anything, you’ll be able to utilize the space even better.

Bunkhouses converted to home RV offices

If you prefer some space, then you might love the idea of getting a camper that has a separate bunkhouse area. They also have a ton of space, a door, and a bit of natural light!

Built In Desk Options (No Modifying… it’s ready to use!)

Many RV manufacturers have noticed the ever increasing amount of campers working on the road, and it seems they’ve responded! I didn’t even know this was a thing until I started researching options myself, but this could save a lot of time, especially if you already know you plan to work from your RV.
