Is South Padre Island worth visiting? 7 Reasons Why We Say Yes!!

Is South Padre Island worth visiting?

There you are, huddled up in blankets, wishing for winter to hurry up and leave. You sit next to the fire, pretending the warmth on your face is actually from the sun, and you are on a beach instead of on your couch. Then it hits you: you can actually make that happen! You can book a trip
to
THE BEACH. YAAAASSSS.

But now, you’ve found yourself wondering which beach is the best beach. Something a little bit off the beaten path of trendy vacation spots. But something that still offers options and variety.

“Hmm
what about South Padre Island?”, you ask yourself. “I wonder if it is worth visiting?”

Wonder no more, friend, because the answer is a resounding “Yes!”. Read on to learn about seven of the fabulous reasons to visit South Padre Island.

Beautiful Beaches

South Padre Island beaches

Of course, the best thing that makes it “worth it” to visit South Padre Island is its spectacular beaches! You see, South Padre Island is what some people call the ‘only tropical island” of Texas. And that is for good reason: it is just a few latitudinal degrees north of the Tropic of Cancer.

Beaches on South Padre Island are known for their sparkling blue waters and soft-powdery sand. Water is also calm, clear, and warm year-round on South padre island, which makes it an ideal beach destination for families with little kids.

Aside from that South padre island features a diverse range of beaches that suits every person. For example, if you are looking for a lively beach with a wide range of activities to do then Isla Blanca beach is the best option for you on the island.

On the other hand, if you are looking for relaxing and secluded beaches then Barracuda cove beach and North access beach are better options. In other words, South padre island has one of the best beaches that you will find off the coast of Texas.

Exciting Outdoor Activities

South padre island activities

This island really does have something for everyone, especially when it comes to things to do outside. From a laid-back game of golf to things that will excite an adrenaline junky, South Padres island has it all. In other words, there is no shortage of things to do on South Padre Island .

The Island Adventure Park has horseback riding, go-karts, and mini golf. They offer parasailing over the Gulf of Mexico and banana boat rides. They boast a full line of massage treatments (hot stone, prenatal, Shiatsu, Swedish
you name it). And they also have what may be the coolest zip-line system known to man.

The owners Doyle and Dolores Wells, are avid zippers themselves, and take great pride in their facilities. Their zip line system has a state-of-the-art, hands-free braking system. That means that your hands won’t get tired during your hour of UNLIMITED zips.

That’s right, you pay for a time slot, not a set number of trips across the line. As best put by Mr. Wells himself, “an hour of speed zipping here is an experience not attainable anywhere else.”

There is also Beach Park at La Isla Blanca. This site offers spaces for weddings and meetings and is the home of the South Padre Island Golf Club. It also houses a water park (which was originally opened under the Schlitterbahn name), with fun attractions for the whole family.

The Sea Turtles

South Padre Island is home to Sea Turtle, Inc., a non-profit organization whose mission is to “ Rescue, Rehabilitate, and Release Injured Sea Turtles “.

Founded in 1977 by Ila Fox Loetscher, also endearingly referred to as “The Turtle Lady of South Padre Island”, they take in injured or sick sea turtles and nurse them back to health, before releasing them back into the wild. If a turtle is deemed non-releasable, the facility takes them in as permanent residents.

One of their most famous residents is an Atlantic Green named Allison. She is the proud owner and user of the world’s first successful prosthetic flipper and has been featured by Discovery Chanel, as well as National Geographic.

If you do nothing else while you’re there, stopping in to meet Allison and the other residents at Sea Turtle Inc. makes it worth visiting South Padre Island.

Dolphin-watching Tours

South Padre Island dolphin watching tour

If you’re interested in marine life and conservatorship, why stop at the sea turtles? The Texas coast also happens to be the home of several large pods of dolphins. To match, there are several companies offering dolphin-watching tours, with an option for every budget.

While some of these are purely for sightseeing pleasure–like a cruise at sunset–others include a light lesson on marine ecology and conservatorship, where the crew drags a small net and then educates the passengers of any marine life caught in the net, before safely releasing it back to sea.

Art is an important part of the culture on South Padre Island, and is, indeed a very worthy reason to visit. The locals seem to truly value the richness art can add to the quality of daily life, and this is made evident through the many permanent sculptures and art pieces throughout the city.

There is a plethora of art galleries on the Island, some of which even offer various art classes, from drawing to metal sculpting. The variety of artistic mediums employed by the local artists provides something for every taste, and for locals and visitors alike to enjoy.

A quick stop at the Visitor’s Center will gain you a copy of the South Padre Island Art Trails map, which details the locations of all statues along Sea Turtle Art Trail (eleven in all) and Sandcastle Trail (thirty in all, as of summer of 2022), along with information about the local art scene, including Art Fest.

Art Fest is usually held in June, and features work from upwards of 40 artists from the Rio Grand Valley, along with live music and an outdoor market.

The Sandcastles

Sandcastles

South Padre Island just so happens to be the Sandcastle Capital of the World, because, among the city’s thirty permanent sandcastle sculptures, is the United States’ oldest and largest permanent sandcastle.

Artists from all over the world come to sculpt these masterpieces, which are then kept as permanent displays across the island.

But that’s not all! South Padre Island also hosts the annual Sandcastle Days Sand Festival. Artists can compete in both amateur and master divisions, and the public can enjoy watching their creations come to life over the span of the weekend. Sandcastle lessons are also available, as well as water slides and activities for the kiddos–or the kids-at-heart!

And if you miss the festival, Sandy Feet Sandcastle Services offers sandcastle sculpting lessons all year round!

The Weather

South Padre Island may very well have perfect weather. The wintertime overnight lows are usually in the mid-’50s, and the summertime highs are usually in the 90s.

Of course, water temperatures also dip in the wintertime, taking water activities off the table, but not much else changes. You can still enjoy the beach, enjoy the wildlife, and enjoy all of the many other “dry” activities the Island has to offer, year-round.

10 Reasons Why Your Next Beach Vacation Should be to South Padre Island

why should you visit south padre island

South Padre Island isn’t just a place to visit for Spring Break when you’re in college, it’s an incredible vacation destination for families all year long!  We spent the New Years Weekend exploring the island, and now I’ve got 10 reasons why your next time at the beach should be South Padre Island!

1. It’s an island at the very bottom of Texas!

schlitterbahn south padre island

If you have never been to South Padre Island, you need to first know that it is an actual island!  You’ll take a bridge across the Laguna Madre from Port Isabell, be sure and notice the beautiful Port Isabell Lighthouse before you cross the 2.37 mile long Queen Isabella Causeway, the only way on and off the island.

You’ll more than likely travel down I-69/Hwy 77 from Corpus Christi.  Along Hwy 77 it’s mostly salt grass plains, and keep an eye out for some of the incredible birds of prey that live here, such as osprey and cara cara. This area is part of a huge international migration route for birds flying from Canada to Mexico! , You’ll pass through Harlingen and Brownsville and you turn off just before the Matamoros Border crossing into Mexico!  A few things to see in Brownsville include the historic downtown, farmers market and the Gladys Porter Zoo!  Click HERE to read more!

Once on the island, the first thing you’ll notice is that it’s a very narrow island, and there is plenty to see and do both on the Beach and the Bay Side!

2.  The Hotels are Amazing!

We made a very last minute decision to stay over New Year’s Eve, and there were only a few rooms available on the island.  South Padre is a BIG destination for Winter Texans, and you’ll see plenty of Wisconsin and Minnesota license plates while you’re here!  Make your winter reservations early!

img_2640

We ended up at the Ramada Inn, which was very affordable, and offered a clean room, with no carpet which I love when traveling!  The hotel sits one block off the beach, a short walk, and there is a park and playground NEXT DOOR which my son loved!  The hotel outdoor pool was also heated, and we spent a chilly New Year’s Day playing in the pool!  Click HERE to visit their website.

Resorts/Hotels I’d recommend:

Beach Resort at South Padre Island , an IHG hotel, has taken over the Schilitterbahn South Padre Island Resort, and is amazing!

The Pearl is another beach-side hotel.  We love the Kids Camp and Friday Night Fireworks during the summer!  Click HERE to visit their website.

Isla Grand Beach Resort is also on the beach.  They have great pools, tennis and volleyball courts.  Click HERE to see a video!

You’ll find a great selection of Vacation homes to rent on AirBNB and VRBO. We usually rent a condo, but we like to travel with our dogs, who love the beach, so this past trip we rented a house close to all the restaurants and attractions. The Hammock House needs some love, but it was a great location, dog-friendly, priced very well, and my kids loved sleeping in hammocks in the living room.

Campgrounds

A lot of Winter Texans bring their RV’s down from all over the country to stay here!  Isla Blanca has over 500 sites, and South Padre KOA offers RV sites, cabins and even tent camping.  Click HERE to visit their website.

3. The town is small enough to explore by bike!

If you’re not traveling with small children, or have bike trailer/bike seats, I’d really suggest taking your bike!  The island is small enough that you can ride around the majority of it!  You can also rent bikes on the island.

4. Golf Carts are cuter here.

Like Port Aransas, golf carts are a BIG thing on SPI, and it’s small enough for them to be a perfect vehicle to run around the island!  Wheels on Padre has the cutest little carts!  They also rent bikes! Click HERE to visit their website.

img_2651

5.  Plenty of Great Restaurants right on the water

The Painted Marlin was a winner on our recent visit, so much that we went twice! The appetizers and entrees were all amazing. I loved the blue crab fingers and crab cake bites, and the panko fried shrimp, redfish rockefeller and blackened ahi tuna dinner were all winners with us!

Pier 19 is our favorite fun place to eat, with a huge pier off the back!  During our dinner we saw dolphins swimming around the pier!  While everything is amazing, the whole Flounder served Cubano style was out favorite!  A shout out on the Key Lime Pie, too, which generally isn’t my favorite pie but I still crave theirs!  For a typical tourist restaurant, the service is amazing!  Joe and Taylor are our favorites!  Click HERE to visit their website.

My husband and I hung out one evening at Coconuts Bar and Grill and Louie’s Backyard, both on the Bay side of the island, while the kids played mini-golf one evening across the street at Gravity Park.  Food and atmosphere were both fun, but it’s 21 and over after 9pm.

My BIGGEST reason for heading to SPI for New Year’s was to take the Polar Dip on New Year’s Day! The annual event is HUGE!  We headed to Clayton’s Beach Bar and Grill, which is the self-proclaimed BIGGEST BEACH BAR ON THE TEXAS COAST. It’s also where you don’t want to be during Spring Break with your family, because this is ground zero for the Spring Break Party!  But during the summer they have a great lunch out on the beach, and it’s very family friendly!  By the way, it was COLD on New Year’s Day, and the wind was blowing like crazy, and when the crowd rushed into the cold Gulf water, we placed our big toe in and ran away!  But next year…..

6.  Much of the access to South Padre Island Beach is FREE!

From anywhere on the island you have access to the beach.  The beach on SPI is protected by dunes, so you’ll have to cross over on boardwalks to reach the beach. We were able to walk from our hotel onto the beach, and walked all the way down to Isla Blanca Park, about 3 miles, or 5 bags of shells!

Isla Blanca Park is a HUGE county-owned park, with beach access with pavilions, restrooms, a fishing jetty, tent and RV camping.  You can often see dolphins and sea turtles here, too!  The fee is $12/car, and during the summer it’s a favorite among families!  Click HERE for more information.

Beach Access 1 – 4 allow only foot traffic, and you can walk to from your hotel or park in a parking lot.  This area does get a little crowded.

Beach Access 5 – 6 has access to drive on the beach.  There is a $12 fee to drive/park on the beach, and a $2 refundable fee for a trash bag if you return it with trash in it.  After about a mile, only 4-wheel drive vehicles are recommended.

7.  Huge Sand Dunes!

If you travel north on Padre Blvd, it turns into State Park Rd 100.  The only main road on the island, it becomes more narrow as the huge sand dunes close in on the road.  Here on this narrow part of the island you can explore the huge dunes with the bay on one side and the beach on the other!  It’s also a great place to look for seashells after high tide!

One of the BEST ways to explore is on horseback!   South Padre Island Adventure Park offer horseback riding on the BEACH!  They also have zip lines and a petting zoo.  Click HERE to visit their website

img_2641

8.  The Laguna Madre Bay

As beautiful as the beach is, the bay side offers it’s own unique beauty!  The Laguna Madre, Spanish for Mother Lagoon, is a huge nursery to the Gulf of Mexico.  A hyper-saline lagoon, one of only a handful in the world, it is saltier than the Gulf.  We met Eddie at Parrot Eyes Water Sports from our waitress Taylor at Pier 19.  Parrot Eyes take you out on guided jet ski tours into the bay, where dolphin, stingrays and skates get close enough to touch!  They also have parasailing, dolphin tours, paddleboarding and more!  Click HERE to visit their website.

The Flats – Bay Side

Just past the Convention Center there is an entrance that will take you to an area known as the Flats.  This land is leased by the SPI Windsurfing Organization, and you can watch windsurfers and kite surfers out on the water.  While it’s open to the public, you are required to join ($30/year, or $20/month) to surf here.  We just wanted to watch, and were pretty well behaved, so we were allowed to just hang out but be aware that they could ask you to leave.  For more information, click HERE .

Want to learn to Windsurf? Check out SPI Windsurf by clicking HERE .

9.  More Fun Things to do on South Padre Island!

I love flying kites on the beach and B&S Kites is a great shop on the island!

Beach Park at Isla Blanca offers a great waterpark!

Gravity Park was a fun place to take the kids for mini-golf and go-carts. The 3 story go-cart track was a favorite for my husband! Since it was slow, they allowed our dog, but not sure if that would happen on a busy summer weekend. Click HERE for more information.

Learn to build a sandcastle! Sandy Feet Sandcastle teaches you the best way to build the house of your dreams, made of sand! Really, these lessons are incredible! Click HERE for more information!

img_2642

Sea Turtle Inc.  offers tours of their rescued sea turtles for a donation.  We loved see the beautiful turtles, including Allison, the first turtle in the world to use a prosthesis! During the late May and early Summer, they do turtle hatchling releases, which are FREE to the public to come watch!  Click HERE for more information.

Take a Deep Sea Fishing Trip! Head out to catch red snapper or take a 3-day Tuna Safari! Red Snapper Season begins June 1, and it’s our favorite time to visit!

Kayak fishing in the Laguna Madre is always fun, too!

10.  Since you have to pass through Port Isabell anyway, check out….

Black Dragon Pirate Cruise takes you on a fun and funny trip into the bay as you play games, swab the deck and live like a pirate!  It’s a fun time for the entire family!  Click HERE to read more!

South Padre Island Dolphin Research and Sea Life Nature Center offers tours in the Bay to see dolphins, and it’s even dog-friendly! They also have a really cool nature center where you can feed a sea turtle!  $3/person just to visit the nature center, and thankfully, they are pup friendly!  Click HERE for more information.

Port Isabell Lighthouse is open to the public!  Click HERE for more information.

Space X on Boca Chica Beach is an hour drive from South Padre Island, but so worth it to see the rockets! We headed down to Texas’ Southernmost beach afterwards, Boca Chica to play in the waves and look for dolphins along the jetties. Now a Space X launch is on my Bucket List!

Family Gap Year Guide

29 Reasons to Visit South Padre Island, Texas

I was looking at Google Maps, deciding where to spend December for our first family gap year , when my husband reached over and scrolled as far south as he could, pointed to south Texas, and said “There. That’s where we should spend the winter.”

Visit South Padre Island

I had no arguments! We wanted to stay warm and visit someplace new, and South Padre Island, on the Texas gulf coast, checked both of those boxes. So we found a condo on Airbnb and booked it.

We drove to South Padre after a day spent in San Antonio . I had fully researched the area and got excited when we saw the lighthouse in Port Isabel and approached the big bridge over to the island.

Bridge to South Padre Island

Once on the island, there were lighted holiday decorations and palm trees lining the way into town, seeming to welcome us. We couldn’t have been more excited.

We spent four weeks on South Padre Island in December 2018, and then we returned for four more weeks in October 2019! We really love the island, the weather, the beach, the activities, the food, and the atmosphere. And there’s a pretty good chance we’ll be returning for another stay soon.

South Padre Island water tower

South Padre Island beach

One of the big draws of spending time on South Padre is, of course, the beach! The navigable portion of the island is about 12 miles long, and there’s quality beach along the whole coast.

And you can swim year-round . The weather was warm and balmy, even in December.

Melody in the South Padre water

I enjoyed many early morning walks and runs along the beach , often catching a gorgeous sunrise .

South Padre Island sunrise

South Padre’s beach is narrower than some, but still great for sunbathing, playing, swimming, etc. There’s not as much dry sand as some beaches, but the sand here is known for being perfect for sandcastle building ! In fact, SPI is the Sandcastle Capital of the World!

We had to put that to the test, of course, so we booked a sandcastle lesson with Sandy Feet. Not a bad way to spend a homeschooling day!

why should you visit south padre island

South Padre Island food

There are plenty of great restaurants on South Padre, with a good combination of unique local restaurants and national chains, for when you want something cheap and quick. Here are some of our favorites:

Boomerang Billy’s is a seafood shack right on the beach where you can enjoy a good meal while feeling the ocean breeze. They often have live performers, and we saw a lot of locals gathering for lunch, including a Christmas party on one day. Everyone seemed to know everyone else — I guess that’s life on a small island!

JAX is the place to go for a delicious burger. We loved their picnic-style indoor theming and all the different topping options.

The Painted Marlin is on the bay side of the island (the island is super skinny, so you can walk from the ocean side to the bay side in a matter of minutes). Their back patio gives a great view of the bay, and I recommend the avocado fries!

If you’re in the mood for some Italian, head for the Meatball Cafe . That’s where we went when my parents visited us, and everyone had a great meal! The meatballs are homemade, so that’s a good place to start.

Cafe by the Beach is exactly what it sounds like. We discovered this place on our second visit and had dinner there on our anniversary. It’s attached to a hotel and the back patio is right next to the beach. Great place to hit for happy hour!

South Padre Island activities

If there’s one thing our kids loved the most about South Padre, it was Gravity Park . The main attraction is the awesome go-karts, with several layers of wooden ramps, curves, and hills that are super fun to zip around. They also have a mini golf course, a small arcade, and a few other attractions like the reverse bungee (terrifying but I’m determined to do it someday) and the skycoaster, which Carter and I did!

When we played that video back and he heard his screaming, Carter asked, “In theory, can you remove certain sounds from videos?”

Sea Turtle Inc is a sea turtle rehabilitation center, and it was a perfect homeschool field trip! They have several full-time turtle residents you can visit and learn all about how the center helps rescue and heal injured sea turtles, and you can also learn about the turtles they are working to prepare for release back into the ocean.

Kids at Sea Turtle Inc

While we were on the island, we had the incredible opportunity to see a sea turtle released back into the ocean at Isla Blanca Park. Everyone gathered on the beach to see her off!

If you’re up for more adventure, visit South Padre Island Adventure Park for ziplining or horseback riding on the beach.

There’s also a Schlitterbarn on the island, for fans of water parks. We haven’t visited yet, but maybe we will on our next trip!

And keep your eye on the calendar for local events . While we were there in December, they had an incredible holiday sandcastle display outside the South Padre Island Convention Center!

Santa sandcastle

I want to shout out the local gym, Island Fitness . I bought a month membership for our second visit, and yes it was a bit more than my $20/month chain gym membership, but it was well worth the money. Also, I was motivated to actually show up!

I could walk to the gym from our condo, and they had a good selection of strength machines, free weights, and cardio machines (though I didn’t use those because, like I said, I walked to and from the gym so that served as my warmup and cool down!).

They also have a smoothie bar outside, which I enjoyed more than once. The owner and staff were always super friendly and helpful, and I will definitely sign up for another month if we return.

If you’re a book lover, you’ll love Paragraphs on Padre . The local bookstore looks deceptively small, but the shelves are packed with a large variety of books, so you’re sure to find something for everyone. While you’re there, why not check out the mystery series, starting with The Padre Puzzle, by local author David Harry. The whole series takes place on the island!

Day Trips from South Padre Island

While there’s tons of fun to be found on the island, there’s even more to do nearby. Just cross the bridge into Port Isabel where you’ll find more great restaurants, shopping, and activities.

You can visit the Port Isabel Lighthouse and enjoy the views from above. Then, head to Pirate’s Landing for some good seafood, and then take a spin through the Mercado Faro and purchase some local crafts.

Port Isabel lighthouse

We also loved taking a Pirate Adventure Cruise on The Black Dragon in Port Isabel.

Pirate Adventure Cruise

This was an incredibly fun excursion that entertained parents and kids alike! We even saw dolphins and SpaceX from the boat! Check out the video of our experience:

Just a 45-minute drive from South Padre Island is Brownsville, Texas , the nearest large town. You can do lots of shopping here, visit your favorite chain restaurants, and attend local events. We also enjoyed a visit to the Gladys Porter Zoo and took in several performances at the Camille Playhouse .

Camille Playhouse in Brownsville

South Padre Island atmosphere

Yes, South Padre Island is known for being a major spring break destination, so I’d definitely recommend traveling families avoid the area in mid-March. But we had an absolutely lovely time in both October and December.

Kids at Pumpkin Patch

South Padre Island has one of most unique climates I’ve encountered. The sea air and humidity is so tangible that walking down the street can feel like walking through a cloud. It was almost mystical, and perfectly pleasant in the winter at least!

In the winter, the island is home to a lot of “Winter Texans” which is the Texas term for snowbirds. In my opinion, they are living their best lives! I’ve often said that I aspire to be a snowbird.

But otherwise, the island is pretty quiet in the winter and a perfect place for a traveling family to spend a month or more. It’s humid but with mild enough temperatures in the winter to be comfortable and warm enough for swimming.

South Padre is one of our favorite places we’ve visited over the past few years, and I know it will be a regular beach vacation destination for years to come!

21 Things to do on South Padre Island, Texas

Written By: ThePlanetD Team

United States

Updated On: April 3, 2024

South Padre Island is a beautiful resort town off coastal South Texas . My parents actually spent a decade as Snowbirds making their way to South Padre to escape the winters from Canada. The town sits on a massive barrier island and is joined to the mainland by Queen Isabella Causeway.

With theme parks and watersports for adventure and amazing natural habitats including nesting grounds for sea turtles and plenty of wildlife, South Padre Island is the perfect balance between spending time in nature and having a fun beach holiday. There are so many South Padre Island attractions – both natural and manmade.

Table of Contents

Top Things to do on South Padre Island

Best things to do on south Padre Island TX Map

This guide will cover all the best things to do on South Padre Island. You’ll have plenty of itinerary inspiration, from exploring Laguna Madre to spending a day at Gravity Park.

1. Enjoy a Beach Day at Isla Blanca Beach

things to do on south padre island Texas isla blanca

What would a beach holiday be without a beach day? Make sure to pencil in at least one day to enjoy a real beach day at Isla Blanca Beach. This is definitely one of the busiest spots and is a place you don’t want to miss when you are looking for things to do on South Padre Island. Here, you can stick to the classics like finding sea shells or sunbathing or, if you are looking for something more active, rent equipment from one of the many surf shops and go surfing or boogie boarding. If you are a real adrenaline junkie, you can even go parasailing or jet skiing.

You can book this parasailing excursion in advance. No experience is needed to take in the sweeping views of the island. You can also book a jet ski rental to explore Laguna Madre independently. Make sure to keep an eye out for dolphins.

Isla Blanca Beach is stunning, with vast white sands and plenty of room to accommodate all the visitors that it inevitably attracts. You are flanked by the marina and backed by a beautiful boardwalk with waterfront pavilions scattered along the way. The beach is just a short walk from the town center and all its amenities.

2. South Padre Island Dolphin Research & Sea Life Nature Center

things to do on south padre island tx dolphin eco tour

Dolphins deserve to live a life free from captivity. And this is precisely the message that the Dolphin Research & Sea Life Nature Center pioneers. The center is just a short drive from South Padre Island – located in Port Isabel on the other side of the Queen Isabella Causeway.

The center runs daily ethical dolphin cruises, taking visitors out to spot wild bottlenose dolphins on a special dolphin tour. These dolphin tours are unlike your standard commercial tourist traps and carry just six or fewer tourists at a time. You’ll experience an ethical dolphin cruise; quiet, respectful, and knowledgeable about the marine animals it aims to spot.

Tours aren’t the only thing the Dolphin Research & Sea Life Nature Center does. The center also has a touch tank and marine exhibits to educate visitors on marine conservation. All the resident animals are rescues that are being rehabilitated or deemed unsuitable to be released back into the wild. You can learn more about ongoing coastal concerns and how you can do your bit to help out.

Book this 90 minute dolphin watch excursion for a cruise into the Gulf of Mexico to spot Atlantic bottlenose dolphins in their natural habitat. You’ll also see seabirds, The US Coast Guard Station, and the Space X location.

3. South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center

things to do on south padre island tx bird and nature center

South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center is another non-profit gem on South Padre Island. The center has over 3,300 feet of boardwalks that wind around the bay, an alligator sanctuary, an observation tower, five bird blinds, and a butterfly garden. You’ll spot birds, gators, butterflies, and more. And you can opt for a guided tour or explore alone – with no noise except from the animals around you.

South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center is perfect if you want to spend half a day surrounded by nature. If you liked the sound of the Laguna Madre Nature Trail, it offers a similar experience, just longer and with more varied attractions along the way.

If you want to see Laguna Madre from the water, a good option is a jet ski rental. You can ride alone or with another person to see the coastline from a different point of view. You can check availability and prices here.

things to do on south padre island tx butterfly garden

An important part of the center is the Butterfly Garden, which is a great place to spot butterflies in the wild. The park is small but full of pollinator-friendly plants – perfect for encouraging butterflies and other beautiful wildlife. The Monarch Butterfly was placed on the Endangered Species List, and the center is working to restore Monarch Butterfly Habitat.

4. South Padre Island Adventure Park

what to do on south padre island tx adventure park

South Padre Island Adventure Park is a dreamy attraction for a day of activities. The park sits on forty acres of land, including a vast, privately owned beach. You can pick whatever activity piques your interest, from horseback riding on the beach to ziplining around a zipline circuit. We recommend horseback riding, as if you get lucky, you might spot bottlenose dolphins or other marine life while cantering along the water’s edge.

South Padre Island Adventure Park also has a petting barn. In this safe, knowledgeable environment, families can introduce young children to animals. The park is a brilliant day out for families and lone adults alike.

5. Take a Sand Castle lesson

what to do on south padre island tx sandcastle lesson

One of the most unique things to do on South Padre Island is to take a sand castle lesson. Chances are, building sand castles was a skill you either taught yourself or your parents showed you with a bucket and spade. However, at South Padre Island, you can take your first official lesson as professional sand sculptors run sand castle lessons along the beach. You won’t be flipping buckets upside down the whole time to make standard castles. You’ll be creating artwork.

The lessons run between one and three hours, and the result is guaranteed to be a masterpiece. You’ll build a stunning castle – often so big that you’ll have to stand on your tiptoes to finish the final roofing details. The details are impressive, with stairways that would impress Disney and realistic textures carved into the walls and roof. Depending on your requirements, you can book group, family, and private lessons.

This Sandcastling Experience will teach you to build a sandcastle like a pro. It includes all the tools to create beautiful sandcastles that can be used throughout your stay. Read more here.

6. See The Largest Outdoor Sandcastle in the US

what to do on south padre island tx largest sandcastle in us

You might make your own sandcastle or even take a sandcastle-building lesson, but you also need to visit the Largest Outdoor Sandcastle in the US. Built in 2013, it took 150 tons of river sand to build. Since then, it has attracted millions of tourists and stands as a testament to South Padre Island’s sandcastle culture. Update: Unfortunately, the City of South Padre Island removed this sandcastle in 2023. But keep your eyes open, as it just might be rebuilt.

There are also many smaller pieces of sand art nearby, so allow at least an hour to look around. If you visit during a holiday, you can usually find some themed artwork, which is always good fun. Even better, you just pay a donation to visit, keeping costs nice and low.

7. Laguna Madre Nature Trail

south padre island things to do laguna madre nature trail

Laguna Madre Nature Trail is South Padre Island’s most scenic and diverse walk. The boardwalk is just 1,500 feet long and spans four acres of the Laguna Madre Wetlands. However, you’ll be surrounded by nature – from fiddlewood berries to pelicans and falcons. It is one of the top bird-watching sites on the island and is a perfect nature walk on a sunny day.

Laguna Madre Nature trail is open 24 hours a day and free to enter. The natural wildlife reserve is a peaceful addition to any South Padre Island itinerary. Allow around an hour to enjoy the trail to its fullest.

8. Sea Turtle Inc.

south padre island things to do sea turtle inc

Who doesn’t love sea turtles? Sea Turtle Inc. is a haven for injured sea turtles and rehabilitates and releases rescued sea turtles 365 days a year. Visiting Sea Turtle Inc. is one of the most wholesome ways to spend a couple of hours – especially since the charity is entirely funded by visitors and donations.

You can take a self-guided tour around the different pools, stopping to look at each rescued sea turtle. If you haven’t seen a sea turtle before, this is a hugely memorable experience. It also helps you to comprehend the number of turtles in need, and you can view the different treatments and techniques used to heal the creatures – including metal braces and bandaging.

Make sure to stop by the gift shop after, as sales massively help the charity continue its fantastic work. You can also check the schedule to attend one of the hourly presentations or daily sea turtle feeding sessions. Read more: 10 Ways to Help Save the Oceans – World Oceans Day and Beyond

9. South Padre Sand Dunes

south padre tx things to do sand dunes

South Padre Sand Dunes are one of the best spots on the island. The dunes sit on the beachfront, located at the north end of Padre Boulevard. While the dunes are protected (meaning no driving or sand sports), you can walk through them. Just be mindful of disrupting the dunes as little as possible.

There is something special about being surrounded by sand dunes, and you should bring your camera to capture the moment. You’ll be surrounded by miles of sandy hills and ridges -a beautiful experience, to say the least.

10. Port Isabel Lighthouse

things to do south padre island texas port isabel lighthouse

Port Isabel Lighthouse is a stunning landmark and state historic site. It is the only remaining lighthouse in Texas still open to the public, so it is considered a valuable part of the state’s coastal history. It is a fantastic attraction to visit for a bit of maritime history.

Port Isabel Lighthouse has 75 stairs, which you can tackle to reach the top for glorious views. Walking up the spiral stairs is mildly vertigo-inducing but indeed an experience. Often, immersive history is easier to engage with, and the lighthouse offers a memorable history lesson.

Tickets can be purchased from the Keeper’s Cottage Visitor Center. Reaching Port Isabel Lighthouse from South Padre Island is also extremely easy, as you just cross the Queen Isabella Highway.

11. Gravity Park

Ready for a day at an amusement park? Gravity Park is a fun evening out. The amusement park is packed with rides and activities, including go-karts, mini-golf, and a reverse bungee. Having opened in 1993, it has years of experience under its belt. It is a popular attraction amongst tourists and locals alike.

Entrance to Gravity Park is free, and tickets for rides are bought on a ride-by-ride basis. This is perfect for adults taking children into the park, as admission tickets can quickly add up to otherwise make an expensive day out. Adults will love the park, too, and the giant swing and reverse bungee are exciting challenges for testing your nerves.

12. Drive the Queen Isabella Causeway

queen isabella causeway south padre tx

This may sound a strange addition to your itinerary but driving the Queen Isabella Causeway is somewhat of a momentous thing to do on South Padre Island. It is one of the longest bridges in Texas and has beautiful water views. You can drive over the bridge yourself or even book a taxi to relax and take in the views.

Isabella Causeway was also sadly the site of tragedy in 2001 when an older version of the bridge collapsed. The newly constructed bridge doubles up as a memorial for the tragedy. It is a humbling drive to pay your respects.

As the causeway is the most popular way to reach South Padre Island, you’ll likely get the chance to cross. It cuts over Laguna Madre, joining Port Isabel with South Padre Island. It is also ideally combined with a visit to Port Isabel Lighthouse. If you need to rent a car for a day, compare prices for rentals at RentalCars.com

13. Fish on the Pirate’s Landing Fishing Pier

pirates landing pier south padre Island texas

Sure, you can embark on a deep-sea fishing excursion (more on that later), but why not try your hand at traditional fishing, too? Head to South Padre’s old fishing pier for a relaxing afternoon. You can often catch tarpon, mangrove snapper, and sand trout, so sit tight and wait for that exciting first bite.

Pirate’s Landing is the longest pier in Texas and has everything you need – from a tackle and bait shop to a toilet block. The pier is located just across the causeway in Port Isabel. You’ll be casting off into Laguna Madre Bay, which has some of the best facilities just steps away.

14. Catch the fireworks

fireworks south padre Island texas

Fireworks are exciting; there’s no denying it. And it just so happens that South Padre has fireworks displays every week for most of the year. Firework displays quickly become one of the favorite South Padre Island attractions in summer. At around 9 pm most nights, you can head out to be entertained by loud noise and bright colors, all for the grand cost of zero dollars. It is easy to see why visiting a firework display has become one of the best things to do on South Padre Island.

Throughout summer, you can catch fireworks on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. On Tuesdays, the display is at Louie’s Backyard. While on Thursdays, the display is held at Isla Grand Beach Resort. Then, on Fridays and Saturdays, you can catch fireworks at The Pier behind the Courtyard by Marriott.

Of course, you can expect extra special fireworks if you visit South Padre Island on the 4th of July or Labor Day. These displays are let loose, especially over Laguna Madre Bay – a spectacle you definitely shouldn’t miss.

15. Visit the South Padre Island Farmer’s Market

south padre Island texas farmers market vegetables

Nothing quite says relaxation like a trip to a farmer’s market. South Padre Island Farmer’s Market runs every Sunday until mid-afternoon, selling local produce and handmade goods. A stroll through the stalls on a sunny Sunday midday is a heavenly thing to do on South Padre Island. It is also easily slotted into a busy itinerary, taking around 20 minutes to walk around.

You could pick up fresh veggies, sweet treats, or a handmade souvenir. You never quite know what you will find, which is all part of the fun.

16. Beach Park at Isla Blanca

A day at the waterpark is brilliant for any tourist. And what better way to beat the hot South Padre weather? You can cool down and get your adrenaline pumping all at the same time.

The beach park has an inland surf machine, a river system, and four different rollercoasters. There are even swim-up bars for the adults to indulge at. You can be zipping along water rides and grabbing poolside refreshments.

One thing to remember is that the Beach Park at Isla Blanca closes during the off-season. This is a definite summer or springtime attraction – ideal for those hot days when you can’t face any real sightseeing.

17. Take a dinner cruise

sunset cruise south padre Island texas

Boat tours are always a good idea, especially since South Padre Island waters are so tranquil and beautiful. However, splashing out on a dinner cruise is a great way to make a standard boat tour even better. Many companies offer dinner cruises around South Padre, but we’d recommend Southern Wave Sailing Charters.

Southern Wave Sailing Charters have luxury catamarans that embark at sunset to whisk tourists out for a dinner cruise they’ll remember. You can enjoy good food, drink, music, and company as you sail. Perhaps you’ll even spot bottlenose dolphins if you are lucky.

This highly rated private sunset cruise takes you out on a catamaran to enjoy beautiful views of the Texas Gulf Coast. It’s a private yacht charter for up to six passengers that can be customized to your preferences.

18. South Padre Island National Seashore

south padre Island texas sand dunes

South Padre Island National Seashore is located north of South Padre Island’s town center. You’ll need to access it by looping back across the mainland. The park protects 66 miles of stunning coastline and houses an estimated 380 bird species. The National Seashore also houses some human history, with Spanish shipwrecks from 1554.

Apart from the odd shipwreck and park sign, you can enjoy miles of undeveloped beaches and hikes. National Seashore is a remote paradise in Texas and the longest stretch of an undeveloped barrier island in the world.

While it might require a little extra effort to get there, it is easily one of the best day trips on South Padre Island. The drive takes around three hours one way, and you’ll need to rent a car to visit. If you are traveling as a group and can rotate drivers, this journey will be a breeze. You drive up to Corpus Christi and then over the John F. Kennedy Memorial Causeway to reach the National Seashore.

19. Port Isabel Historical Museum

Port Isabel Historical Museum is one of South Padre Island’s most educational attractions. With fascinating exhibits and artifacts, the museum whisks visitors back to the Mexican-American War. The Museum also delves into the local area’s history, covering Laguna Madre’s experience of the war and its early maritime beginnings. Laguna Madre’s history has been effectively condensed onto a giant timeline—so you can literally walk through the ages.

Whether you are a history enthusiast or just want to learn more about a lesser-taught piece of history, visiting this museum is a great idea. It is also one of the best indoor activities in the area, so keep it in mind on a rainy day.

20. Get on the Water

fishing at south padre Island tx

If you are an avid fisherman, deep sea fishing is an enormously alluring bucket list-worthy experience. Even those who know nothing about fishing will have seen pictures of people posing with giant fish they’ve caught at sea. To get yourself off the piers and beaches and out into the ocean, consider one of South Padre’s deep sea fishing trips.

Osprey Cruises are a popular option and operate all-year-round tours. This flexibility is fantastic for those visiting out-of-season. You’ll depart at 7:30 am for a full eight hours on the water. Osprey Cruises also provides all bait and tackle, keeping your day bag nice and light.

You can book a small half -day fishing trip with Viator in advance to fish for trout, sheepshead, and more. A valid Texas Saltwater Fishing License is required for this excursion.

Even if you decide that deep sea fishing isn’t for you, be that due to limited time or budget, there are plenty of other fishing trips. Crystal Flats Guide Service offers excellent bay fishing. Crystal Flats Guide Service doesn’t take you right out to sea. And instead, you’ll fish in particular inshore areas preferred by locals. It is a much smoother, shorter experience, so consider it as an alternative if you are relatively new to fishing. Plus many people fish right off the beach.

21. Where to Eat on South Padre Island

seafood south padre Island texas

Dine at Blackbeard’s

You can’t visit the seaside without trying seafood, and Blackbeard’s is the best spot on South Padre Island. The casual eatery might look unassuming, but don’t be fooled; it has been serving delicious seafood since 1978 and has quite the cult following.

The ginger teriyaki tuna steak is a popular choice on the menu. You can tuck in knowing that your food is fresh and locally caught. Blackbeard’s also has a great burger menu if you change your mind about seafood, including a select few vegetarian options. Casual, friendly, and full of tasty food, dining at Blackbeard’s is one of the most fun things to do on South Padre Island.

Sea Ranch is another recommendation for our foodies. Dining at the restaurant is one of the best things to do on South Padre Island if you have a passion for seafood and high-quality cuisine. You could be tucking into king crab legs or enjoying succulent Gulf Coast shrimp. The selection of seafood is varied and as fresh as possible.

Sea Ranch is located right on the harbor and edge of Laguna Madre Bay. It has never been so easy to visualize your food’s ocean-to-plate journey.

Getting around South Padre Island is very straightforward. The town center is small and quickly walked on foot, so you won’t need to worry about public transport if you stay around the center.

If you want to venture further up the island, South Padre Island has an excellent public transport system. The Island Metro is a free shuttle that transports you around the whole island, stopping at major hotels, attractions, and beaches.

If you want to travel further afield, this is an excellent idea, taking day trips to places like Padre Island National Seashore. According to many, the best way to experience South Padre's wild side is to take a stroll along the Laguna Madre Nature Trail, a boardwalk that runs from the South Padre Island Convention Centre out to the Laguna Madre wetlands. This is also a major spot for bird-watching: Throughout the year, more than 300 species of birds pass through the South Padre Island area and the Laguna Madre Nature Trail is a great place for you to see them in their natural habitat. The Laguna Madre Nature Trail is open 24 hours a day and access is free.

Right next to the Laguna Madre Nature Trail, you'll find the South Padre Island Birding & Nature Center, which offers more bird-watching, a five-story viewing tower and an auditorium showing short documentary movies. You'll be able to see different bird and butterfly species as well as other wildlife. Admission to the center costs $6 for adults, $5 for students and $3 for children. Visit nature center's  website for more information.

Sea Turtle, Inc. Sea Turtle, Inc.

Founded in 1977, Sea Turtle, Inc. was established to help protect all species of marine turtles. If you're looking to see these fascinating creatures up close, this is the place to go. Volunteers offer presentations about turtle conservation, a regular hit among guests, and kid-friendly activities teach your little ones how to identify different types of sea turtles. Your kids will also love the scavenger hunt available at the center. And don't miss your chance to see the littlest residents: visitors are invited to look on as baby sea turtles are released back into the wild. Plan to check the website in advance to see if you can partake in one of these activites, as hatchling releases are not a regular event. You also have the opportunity to "adopt" individual sea turtles and nests, the proceeds of which go to helping the center's conservation programs.

By the time they leave, guests adore the turtles at the center and appreciate the group’s mission to save them. Located on the northern end of Padre Boulevard just south of the South Padre Island Convention Center, Sea Turtle, Inc. is open Tuesday through Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; it stays open until 5 p.m. from June to mid-August. There is  a minimal donation fee. For more information, visit Sea Turtle, Inc.'s website .

Sitting on the southern edge of South Padre Island, Isla Blanca Park is home to some of the area's best beaches, not to mention fishing spots, playgrounds and boating facilities. Plus, it's the site of one of the most highly visited South Padre attractions: a huge statue of El Cristo de los Pescadores (Christ of the Fishermen). This is also a great spot to leave land behind and explore the sea on a kiteboard or a snorkeling excursion. Isla Blanca Park also features several lodging and camping options as well as restroom and shower facilities.

Many recent visitors praised the facilities on-site and say the warm, clear water make this a must-visit spot. However, multiple campers complained of poor customer service from park staff.

Museums of Port Isabel Museums of Port Isabel

If you need a break from the beach or are interested in learning more about the area, consider planning visits to the Museums of Port Isabel. Take your pick between three popular historic sites: the Port Isabel Lighthouse, the Port Isabel Historical Museum and the Treasures of the Gulf Museum. You can visit each individually or for a discounted entry fee, can gain access to all three.

The lighthouse was constructed in 1852 to help guide ships through Brazos Santiago Pass. Now it's the only one in the area that's open to the public – visitors are also invited to explore the ground's keeper's cottage. Located just south of the lighthouse and housed in an old dry goods store, the Port Isabel Historical Museum houses one of the largest collections of artifacts from the Mexican-American War, not to mention a theater and gift shop. Right next door is the Treasures of the Gulf Museum, a must-see if you're traveling with kids. Here they can learn all about what life was like aboard a 16th-century ship and get a good look at some of the treasure found beneath the waters of the Gulf.

Your Guide to South Padre Island—One of Texas's Best Kept Secrets

All the best places to stay, play, and everything in-between.

person kayaking on the ocean next to the shore covered with palm trees, boats, businesses and more

About 30 minutes from the Mexican border, SPI offers more than 30 miles of sand, surf and plenty of sunshine. Before arriving to the island, travelers go through its neighboring town, Port Isabel. There, you can visit the last open lighthouse in the state of Texas. Climb to the top and take in breathtaking views of South Padre. The island is unique in many ways, one being that you’re surrounded by different bodies of water while you’re there. Dip your toes in the Gulf of Mexico on one side and splash around Laguna Madre Bay on the opposite.

SPI is home to plenty of locals who take pride in their tropical town. You’ll find the area’s best restaurants where you can cook your own catch, find some award-winning fish tacos, and sip on a refreshing drink while you watch the sun set over the water. Sound charming yet? If so, I'm sharing all of my favorite hidden gems and must visit spots on the island.

Brunch for a Whole Bunch

a plate of french toast with bananas and strawberries and mugs of coffee

Everyone says "Everything is bigger in Texas," but it's especially bigger at Josephine’s Kitchen . The oversized menu includes savory favorites, something for those with a sweet tooth, and even a few favorite Mexican dishes. And those dishes—some of the biggest you've ever seen! Come hungry, because they fill ya up at Josephine's!

Stay by the Sea

pool surrounded by chairs, cabanas, palm trees and a tiki hut bar

The area has dozens of beautiful resorts, hotels, condos and beach houses to stay at. During our visit, Holiday Inn Resort was the perfect place for some rest after hours in the sun! The beach-front resort provides easy access to the beach plus three pools on the property, one with a swim up bar, might I add. Not to mention, you can rent out the top floor, a rooftop bar and event space with an ocean view, for parties or a dreamy beach wedding.

Be a Beach Bum For a Day

men fishing on the rocks above the ocean at isla blanca park on south padre island

Pack up the cooler and head to Isla Blanca Park for a day at the beach! Located on the southernmost tip of SPI, Isla Blanca is a popular spot for R.V. campers, fishers, surfers and sun bathers. The park also offers cabana rentals, tent sites, and restroom/shower facilities. Not to mention a spot to rent fishing and water gear if you come without. Walk down the beach and any social butterfly will be thrilled to find a water park and an array of shoreside restaurants.

Enjoy Lunch Along the Water

Try the award-winning Mahi Tacos and sip on the best glass of lemonade you've ever had at Mahi Nic! The ocean-side restaurant is situated on a shaded dock making it the perfect spot to sit and watch boats come and go along the water. (Seriously, try the lemonade and thank me later).

Head Out to Sea

woman riding a boat and taking a photo of a sea creature in the ocean

Look for friendly dolphins and more fishy friends with Breakaway Cruises ! Hop on the boat and head out to sea for a snorkeling trip, jetski rides, dolphin watch tours, deep sea fishing and much more.

Get Crafty in an Art Class

group of people sitting around a table at an art studio taking a fun art class

Just a few steps away from the ocean is The Art Lounge : a place for artists and creative minds to gather. Browse the work of local artists, do some shopping, or flex your creative muscles at a workshop led by professional instructors. If you're in town long enough, you might be lucky enough to catch some live music in the evening.

Horse Around a Bit

Imagine you're in a Nicholas Sparks movie or an episode of Yellowstone when you go horseback riding on the beach! Talk about dreamy. Head out to the sticks where Island Adventure Park offers horse back riding, a petting barn, zip-lining, parasailing and even more adventures to cross off your bucket list.

Eat, drink, live at Viva

pink cocktail garnished with raspberries sitting on a table with menu

Enjoy, dinner, drinks, and a beautiful sunset view at Viva . The bar is stocked with only the best liquors for a unique cocktail and the menu offers an array of delicious seafood. The scallops are some of the best I've ever had and you can even have them cook your own catch!

Dolphin Watching Tour of South Padre Island

Dolphin cruises are one of our favorite things to do on South Padre Island TX. The waters near South Padre Island host several resident pods of dolphins. The pods with younger dolphins are more playful and love to jump, splash, and flip in the air.

If you’re lucky, you can even spot mama dolphins with small babies by their side. The dolphins often swim alongside boats and may follow them for quite a distance.

Dolphin cruises are the most popular South Padre Island attractions

Out of the many available options, how do you select a dolphin tour?

We recommend choosing one that is eco friendly. Additionally, tours that offer a personal experience, accommodating 4 to 6 people in a small boat, are preferable to those that cater to large groups. Dolphins tend to come much closer to pontoons than they do to larger, more intimidating boats.

South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center

The South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center is one of the most fun things to do in South Padre Island with family. The center is located right next to the Convention Center. It offers the perfect opportunity to learn about the Gulf Coast’s wildlife, including a variety of birds, pelicans, sea turtles, dolphins, and alligators.

There are several attractions at the center, including a butterfly garden, watchtower that offers bird’s-eye views of the area, birding trails, as well as an alligator sanctuary. The Nature Center entry fee is quite nominal and well worth the experience.

Indoor Attractions

The center offers informative talks about the alligators a few times during the day. For an additional price, you can choose to touch a baby alligator and a non-venomous snake afterwards. We opted for this and our kids loved the unique opportunity. The encounter is completely ethical as the baby alligator is a rescued one, and not intentionally taken from its mother.

While inside the center, you should climb up to the 5 story watchtower to see panoramic views along the Laguna Madre. The views from up there are really spectacular. This is also one of the most romantic spots on the island. On our trip, we saw a proposal take place here – complete with rose petals arranged by the Nature Center staff.

The Viewing Tower offers incredible views

Outdoor Attractions

The outdoor Monarch Butterfly Garden is the perfect place to spot a kaleidoscope of Monarch butterflies during the migrating season. Every October they celebrate butterfly migration events complete with live music, native plant sale, butterfly garden tours, and activities for kids – face painting and costume contest!

Next Stop – The Alligator Sanctuary! All the alligators in the sanctuary are rescued from roadsides, backyards, or peoples homes. The center provides them with a safe environment. From the boardwalk path, you can see several juvenile alligators sunning themselves. Keep an eye out for Big Padre, the 50-year-old resident alligator.

Boardwalk Trail as seen from the top of the Viewing Tower

The highlight of a visit to the SPI Birding and Nature Center is, however, the birding trail. This South Padre Island boardwalk trail is over 3300 feet long and takes you out over the wetlands. Visitors can spot resident as well as migratory birds including pelicans, oystercatchers, spoonbills, thrushes, falcons, several types of ducks, and warblers. The 5 bird blinds on the trail are great to sit and observe the birds.

We recommend keeping aside 2 to 3 hours to see the Nature Center exhibits and hike the trails. Be sure to stop at their gift shop before you head out. This is the best place on South Padre Island to buy ethically sourced nature-themed souvenirs.

Sea Turtle Inc

Love Sea Turtles? Want to understand sea turtle conservation and rehabilitation efforts? Head over to Sea Turtle Inc . This amazing family attraction is located next to the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center.

Sea Turtle Inc plays a very important role in the community. It serves as an aquarium / animal hospital / rehabilitation center / ecotourism attraction. The center rescues and rehabilitates injured sea turtles before releasing them out into the open ocean. The center provides a permanent home to several injured sea turtles who can never be released in the wild.

It is amazing to watch the sea turtles at Sea Turtle Inc and read their stories

Any time you visit, the center is likely to have several injured marine turtle species under care and observation. Visitors can also attend a sea turtle feeding, which is an amazing experience for kids. Our son was able to feed them lettuce – a memory he remembers very well.

Sea Turtle Inc also has several exhibits that help visitors learn about the different sea turtle species. They can touch the gigantic turtle shells. Visitors also learn how human generated trash – such as plastic bottles and fishing nets – harm the sea turtles. Our kids were really moved by how the trash thrown in the ocean can change a sea turtle’s life forever. Since then they have been diligent about picking up trash on the beach.

We love seeing the sandcastles on South Padre Island

The Visitor Center is a good place to stop by for recommendations on island attractions, eateries, hotels, and seasonal events. They also have free and clean restrooms.

Holiday Sandcastle Village is another great stop on the Sandcastle Trail. It originally began as a Christmas event, but has expanded into a year round event. Located near Gravity Park, the tent venue is home to amazing themed sandcastles that are updated for occasions such as Valentines Day and Spring Break.

We also love the Sea Turtle Art Trail . This trail features vibrant painted fiberglass sea turtles placed at strategic locations throughout the island. Each turtle is decorated with its own unique design, making for colorful photo opportunities.

South Padre Island Convention Center Murals and Photo-ops!

One of the main attractions here is Wyland Whaling Wall which you can easily spot from the parking lot. The Whaling Walls are a beautiful series of murals all over the world by marine life artist Robert Wyland. There are 100 such whaling walls in existence and they are created to increase awareness and conservation efforts for whales.

The SPI whaling wall features the orcas or killer whales that live off the Gulf of Mexico. Along with orcas, you can also see bottlenose dolphins and other whales. The mural is beautiful and very photogenic.

Hidden Gems on South Padre Island

Cristo de Los Pescadores statue

On the south side of the island, within Isla Blanca Park, you will find the statue of ‘Christ of the Fishermen’ or Cristo de Los Pescadores . This memorial is built to honor fishermen that were lost at sea. Along the base of the statue, you will discover sad but beautiful inscriptions written in memory of those who never returned. Reading the epitaphs is a moving experience.

Cristo de Los Pescadores Statue on South Padre Island

The statue reminds me of ‘Christ the Redeemer’ in Brazil with its open arms and kind expression. The views of the Gulf from near the statue are stunning. There is a picnic table located just near the statue, which is perfect for a nice lunch.

Visitors need to pay a small fee to access this area on the south side of the island, but that gives access to many amenities including the pristine beaches and changing rooms found here.

Gorgeous views of the Gulf Coast on South Padre Island

Playa Blanca

At the southernmost tip of the island, inside the Isla Blanca Park , you will find the beautiful Island Blanca beach. Better known as Playa Blanca, this beach is one of the least crowded ones on the island due to the entry fee required to visit this part of the island.

Many visitors who stay near the north side of the island in large resorts and hotels, simply miss out on this excellent beach. You will also find a large boardwalk here as well as restrooms and other amenities. We love visiting this beach and always have great fun playing in the sand and swimming in the water.

Isla Blanca Beach Park has a nice bordwalk area

Chapel By The Sea

Chapel by the Sea is a must for those who are looking for a place to worship on the island as well as architecture lovers. This is one of the most charming churches I have stumbled upon. It is located on the south side of the island near Isla Blanca Park.

The exterior is a striking white-washed building set amongst the swaying palm trees. Mosaic tile steps will take you inside the chapel. The interior is equally gorgeous. The floor to ceiling windows make the chapel airy and full of natural light. The windows offer amazing views of the island.

The service here is a powerful spiritual experience. You will see a lot of Winter Texans walk in flip flops and beachwear to attend service. The sermon is straight from the Bible and the music is excellent. The church also holds many other activities throughout the year. The Chapel by the Sea is also a popular wedding spot on South Padre Island.

To reach these gigantic dunes, drive north on Padre Blvd. Drive past the Convention Center. Go past all the buildings and development, and you will reach a large area where the huge sand dunes spread in every direction.

The beaches on the northern edge of the island are covered in dunes

Along the way, you will see several beach accesses which you can use to drive over the dunes. However, you will need a 4WD to drive over the sand. These dunes often move and take over the road in windy seasons.

The sand dunes are simply beautiful and fun to explore. You can climb to the top of the dunes and then enjoy sand boarding to their base. The views of the Gulf Coast and Laguna Madre from the top of the sand dunes are magnificent.

We love to go beachcombing while visiting South Padre Island. Our kids enjoy having their own buckets and hunting for seashells. We can easily spend a couple of happy afternoons on the beach, bucket in hand, looking for treasures.

Gather sea shells on South Padre Island beaches

South Padre Island is a great place to go beachcombing as the powerful Gulf current brings a lot of things to the shore. You can find driftwood, seashells, seeds, dried seaweed, sea glass, and other unique items. Even sea fossils are said to wash up frequently at South Padre Island. Go just after high tide and you’ll find some of the best treasures from the sea.

If you are lucky, you can find large isolated areas on the island where there are few other beachgoers and an entire empty beach full of treasures where you can beach comb to your heart’s content. You can bring any treasures that you find back home. We have been able to find seashells, sea glass, and sea pebbles at South Padre Island.

Be careful of dangerous things like pufferfish which might wash up on South Padre Island beaches

We have also found a washed-up pufferfish among other things, so I’d recommend everyone to be careful and watch where you step on the beach.

Surfing at South Padre Island

South Padre Island is one of the best places in Texas to learn how to surf. Many local surf shops offer lessons for all levels, from beginners to advanced surfers. The long stretches of sandy beaches and consistent waves make it an ideal place for surfing.

If you’re not comfortable with learning how to surf, you can still enjoy watching others ride the waves. South Padre Island is a popular spot for surfing competitions and you may get to see some professional surfers in action.

The beaches on south end of South Padre Island are perfect for watersports

Horseback riding on the beach

Experience the beauty of South Padre Island in a unique way by taking a horseback ride on the beach. The guided tours take you through the sand dunes and along the shoreline.

Whether it’s watching the sunset or spotting dolphins in the distance, horseback riding on the beach is an unforgettable experience. It’s also a great opportunity to connect with nature and appreciate the island’s natural surroundings.

Be sure to make reservations in advance as horse riding is one of the most popular South Padre Island activities.

Fishing Charters

South Padre Island is a haven for fishing enthusiasts. There are many fishing charters available that take you to the best spots for catching fish in the Gulf of Mexico. You can choose from half-day or full-day trips and catch a variety of fish such as red snapper, kingfish, and tuna. The experienced guides on these charters will provide you with all the necessary equipment and knowledge to have a successful fishing trip.

Paddleboarding in South Padre Island

Paddleboarding is a fun and easy water sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Stand-up paddleboards (SUP) are available for rent on the island and there are also lessons available for beginners. Paddling along the calm waters of Laguna Madre Bay or in the Gulf of Mexico is a great way to explore the island from a different perspective.

Skydiving and Parasailing in South Padre Island

In addition to these watersports, visitors can also parasail or skydive South Padre Island. The views from the sky as you skydive South Padre Island are spectacular. You can see both the Gulf Coast and the water stretched below you.  If you prefer a more relaxed experience, parasailing is a great way to get a bird’s-eye view of the island and its surrounding waters.

Snorkeling Excursion in South Padre Island and Scuba Diving

Operators on the island also offer snorkeling and scuba diving excursions to nearby locales. The bayside has great clarity and most excursions will take you there. Artificial reef sites can be found even closer to the island and are popular with both divers and snorkelers. Experienced divers can also venture out into the Gulf of Mexico for a more challenging dive.

Couple Walking on Beach at Sunset

Charters and Cruises in South Padre Island

Sunset cruises are extremely romantic and depending on the company you can also go for a champagne cruise or plan a romantic anniversary or honeymoon celebration. This is also a great way to propose on the island and a top among romantic activities to do in South Padre Island for couples.

In the summers, you can enjoy firework cruises from Dolphin Docks in Port Isabel. The fireworks take place on the bayside on Thursdays and Fridays at 9:15 pm.

In addition to these activities, you can also book your own charters or rent a catamaran. We recommend booking these for fishing charters, sunset cruises, and dolphin cruises. Deep sea fishing trips on the island are exceedingly popular.

Sandcastle Lessons

South Padre Island is known as the Sandcastle Capital of the world. The sand here is so soft and fine that it makes excellent sandcastles. Apart from the sandcastles on the sandcastle trail, you will find several other sandcastles throughout the island. You can also find locals building the sandcastles on the beach.

But how do you participate in all the sandy, messy fun? By taking a sandcastle building lesson!

Several locals who are experts at building sandcastles offer lessons to visitors. This is a perfect activity for families with kids where everyone has fun together while learning to build and sculpt the sandcastles.

Kiteboarding in South Padre Island

South Padre Island is also known as the kiteboarding capital of North America. The strong winds and shallow waters make it an ideal spot for this extreme water sport. There are many schools on the island that offer lessons and rental equipment for beginners to advanced riders.

Jet skiing at SPI

Jet skiing is a popular activity at South Padre Island. The calm waters of Laguna Madre Bay make it a safe and fun place for jet skiing. You can rent jet skis from local vendors on the island, or join a guided tour to explore more of the bay.

Closed Attractions

Why do we keep information about closed attractions? Multiple reasons. Sometimes, attractions close temporarily and can reopen in the future. Sometimes readers want to know why they can no longer find an attraction and this list helps them figure out why.

South Padre Island Dolphin Research & Sealife Nature Center

SPI Dolphin Research Center is a great educational opportunity to learn about the most intelligent marine creatures – the dolphins. The center promotes dolphin education and marine life conservation. It is located in Port Isabel, Texas just across the causeway from South padre Island.

The center has several dolphins for visitors to see and connect to. Visitors can also see other rescued animals like sea turtles, tortoises, iguana, fish, crabs, octopus, and snails. Kids can touch and feed the animals and learn more about them. It is easy to understand why the Dolphin Research Center is amongst the best places to visit in South Padre Island for families.

Dolphin cruise on pontoon boat with South Padre Island Dolphin Research and Nature Center

The center also offers eco-friendly dolphin cruises. Their dolphin tours are on smaller pontoon boats that don’t disturb marine life. They do not drag nets through the water to trap creatures for tourists to see like few other tours. Instead, they take you out on the water to see the marine animals in their natural environment.

The person who makes this magic happen is Scarlett, the dolphin whisperer and her friendly dolphin dogs who can sense the dolphins before you see them. She takes you down in her well-maintained pontoon. Families love seeing the dolphins and kids are amazed to see them leap and play in the water.

The center as well as its dolphin tours are currently closed .

South Padre Island Events

Apart from these activities, there are also many exciting events that take place on South Padre Island throughout the year, such as:

South Padre Island Farmers Market

The South Padre Island Farmers Market is the place to buy fresh produce and artisan goods including cheese, jams, jellies, fresh seafood, and baked goods. The market is open on Sundays usually from 11 am to 1 pm and held in the Shores neighborhood.

While the market is not huge, it has a lot of fresh produce from the neighboring Rio Grande Valley. The market also often has live music and other entertainment as well as eateries selling small bites. Most vendors offer free samples, making shopping easier.

What should you buy?

Fruits like oranges, giant grapefruits, and watermelons are really fresh at the market. The citrus fruits that we bought were very sweet and delicious. The kettle corn is quite crunchy and good. You can also buy supplies for a picnic on the beach.

Spring Break

South Padre Island is the most famous Texas Spring Break destination. The island is easily accessible from Austin, San Antonio or Houston and the beaches are ready to welcome you with open arms.

Every year the city gears up for thousands of college students who come here to party on the beach. There are also various events and activities taking place throughout the week to keep the party going all day long.

Best Time to visit South Padre Island

Which times of the year should you avoid?

Summers can be unbearably hot on the island and the sun too intense for some vacationers. The temperatures hover around 100 for several weeks. If you visit from June to August – spend as much time as possible in the water and you should be okay. Remember to pack sunscreen.

Holiday season on the island can be busy and crowded. Hotels get booked out well in advance for Christmas vacations. You will be paying higher for almost all popular things to do in South Padre Island in December – cruise and charter rates, especially, can be pretty high.

If you don’t mind the cooler winds and low season crowds, then visiting South Padre Island in January is a great option.

In March, spring breakers – mostly college crowds – descend on the island and claim it! You will find a mish mash of pool parties, beach competitions, blaring music, and concerts. Hurricane season can rain out your holiday – so check the forecast before you go.

The Ultimate Guide to South Padre Island, Texas

August 1, 2022

south padre island vacation

We just came back from our family vacation in South Padre Island, Texas and it was really amazing. I was so pleasantly surprised at all there is to do so I had to write a blog post about it to share our experience with you. We truly made some amazing memories there and my hope is that this blog post will inspire you to do the same.

mommy and me matching swimwear

Let’s start with the facts. South Padre is the only tropical island in Texas. It also has the longest stretch of white sand beach in the entire state. It’s perfect for a year-round family destination or even for a couple’s trip. There’s so many unique and fun things to do on the island from the amazing beaches and surfing to waterparks and eco-adventures. This blog post will show you everything that our family of six did during our 4-night stay on the island.

Where to Stay in South Padre Island

As with any beach town, you’ll find an array of places to stay. South Padre Island has beach resorts and hotels and there’s also a popular option of renting high-rise condos for your vacation as well. We stayed at Pearl South Padre Resort . However, they are closing down this property in September 2022 to completely renovate and rebrand. When they open back up in the Spring of 2023, the property will officially be a Margaritaville Resort and I’m so excited about this.

why should you visit south padre island

The location of the resort was perfect for us. It’s on the south end of the island. We had direct beach access and it was very close to the waterpark and bay where we docked for our dolphin tour. We had a gigantic two-bedroom suite with an ocean-view and a full kitchen which is very convenient when traveling with family. Although we didn’t cook, having a microwave, full refrigerator with ice maker & freezer, and a dining table was quite useful.

Landshark Bar & Grill was the restaurant at the resort. It’s already fully-remodeled to the Margaritaville brand and was delicious. We ate there several times during our stay and even ordered poolside at our cabana and at the swim up pool bar. The condos next door to the resort, My Sapphire , are available for vacation rental and all have access to the Pearl’s/Margaritaville pool, restaurant & bar too.

Other really great properties to consider to stay at in South Padre Island are Courtyard by Marriott South Padre Island and Holiday Inn Resort . They both have very large family friendly suites. The Courtyard has a Bar Louie Restaurant that had the best brunch of our entire trip. I highly recommend it.

Keep in mind that South Padre Island does not have luxury high-end accommodations like a Miami Beach. So if you’re looking for a luxury stay, you won’t really find that here. But in my opinion, the quality of the beach itself and the beach activities are just as nice
if not nicer.

When to Visit South Padre Island

South Padre Island is a popular destination for spring breakers. To avoid the crowds and college kids, I would recommend not traveling during that time. Other than that, Texas has pretty warm weather year-round so the remainder of the year is up for grabs. Just check the weather before booking your travel. We went in late July and it was perfect weather with virtually no crowds at all.

If you live in Texas and taking a road trip to South Padre Island, then having your car to navigate the island works perfectly. It’s a very drivable town and easy to navigate. There are several RV parks near the beach if that is your mode of transportation as well.

If you live outside of Texas and flying in to one of the major Texas cities to make an entire vacation out of it, I’ve listed the drive times below when renting a car from those cities.

why should you visit south padre island

Drive Times:

San Antonio to South Padre Island – 4.5 hour drive

Austin to South Padre Island – 5.5 hour drive

Houston to South Padre Island – 5.75 hour drive

Dallas to South Padre Island – 8.25 hour drive

Another very popular mode of transportation once you get to the island is golf carts. There was literally a golf cart rental company on every other block. We even saw golf carts that had 6 and 8 passenger seating. There were also slingshots and other cool motorized cars to rent as well. They offer both hourly and daily rentals. You can reserve online in advance, but I would recommend waiting until you arrive so you can actually choose your transportation in person. Even though we didn’t book a golf cart during our stay, I wish we would have. It would have been helpful to avoid getting sand and dirt in own car. There is also an Island Metro Shuttle that has free rides along the island.

It’s important to note that there is a Walmart Supercenter and H-E-B grocery store nearby in Port Isabel, TX that we found all of our essentials at including any and everything that you could possibly need for a beach vacation. Port Isabel is the city that you will pass through crossing over the bridge to get to South Padre Island. There is also a CVS Pharmacy and Walgreens nearby as well. And yes
even a Starbucks. Here is a great user-friendly map of the island to download. Now let’s get into things to do.

Things to Do in South Padre Island

If you’ve never been to South Padre Island before or perhaps you went years ago back in your college days, you may be wondering about the things to do in South Padre Island with kids. Here’s a list of things that we did and all things that we did not get a chance to do, but will put on our itinerary for our next visit.

South Padre Island is 34 miles of white sand beach between the Gulf of Mexico and the Laguna Madre Bay. There are many beach service companies along the island that offer beach rentals of various items. At our resort, there was a Sonny’s Beach Service right on the beach that offered umbrella and chair rentals along with other services.

There are 25 public beach access points along the main beach road, Gulf Boulevard. For a small fee, only beach Access #5 and #6 actually allow you to drive your car onto the beach. You can also go to one of the county park beaches where you’ll find pavilions with picnic tables, playgrounds, restrooms, and showers.

Our resort had direct beach access so this made it super convenient to spend an entire day there.

  • Resort Pools

Most of the larger resorts/condo buildings have really nice pools with cabana rentals. We made an entire afternoon out of lounging at our resort pool. There was a swim-up bar, live entertainment and restaurant service at our cabana.

  • Island Adventure Park

21040 State Park Rd 100, South Padre Island, TX 78597

This was one of my favorite activities of the trip. There’s horseback riding, ziplines, a petting barn, and pony rides for the younger kids. Facebook: @spiadventurepark

  • Beach Park at Isla Blanca

33261 State Park Road 100, South Padre Island, Texas 78597

This waterpark was less than 5 minutes from our resort. You can bring your own food and drinks in the park. There is a small fee to bring a cooler with ice. We made plans to stay from park opening to closing so we rented a cabana to have a private place to eat, relax and change. It was worth the cost in my opinion. I found this park to be very small child friendly with lots for younger kids to do. I’ll be doing a YouTube review on the layout for the cabanas to help you best choose which one to rent. • Dolphin Watch and Ecoadventure Tour

33256 State Park Rd 100, South Padre Island, TX 78597

There are several companies that provide Dolphin Tours in South Padre Island. I’ve linked the company that we went with because they had really great reviews. We saw several dolphins throughout our tour. Try to arrive early to be one of the first ones to board. There is covered seating and non-covered seating. We were almost late for our tour and ended up having to sit on the uncovered part of the boat. That sun was no joke! Bring lots of sunscreen. This tour allows you to bring your own drinks aboard. • Gravity Park

106 West Marlin Street, South Padre Island, Texas 78597

This amusement park is open from 6pm to 12am daily. It’s a great activity for the entire family. There were some pretty crazy rides like a reverse bungee jump and a skycoaster swing which neither I was brave enough to try. There’s also go karts, mini golf, a ferris wheel and other rides. The tickets are all a la carte. Instagram: @gravityparkspi

  • Sandcastle Village

West Ling Street, South Padre Island, TX 78597

The sandcastle village is right next door to Gravity Park and is a collection of huge sand castle sculptures free to view. Donations are accepted. Instagram: @sandcastleisland

  • Parasailing

There are several beach service companies that offer parasailing. Our resort had a Sonny’s Beach Service booth right on property so it made it very convenient to book and we didn’t have to shuttle to a different loading spot on the beach. There were options to parasail or just ride in the parasail boat as a spectator. Facebook: @sonnysbeachservice . SPI Excursions was another popular company offering the same services. • Sunrise or Sunset Photoshoot on the Beach

The best way to find a photographer for vacation is to search the city’s hashtag on Instagram. You can check out the photographer’s quality of work and click directly to their websites to find out more information. In this case, I searched #SouthPadreIslandPhotographer. We chose Minerva Wallace of @thegirlbehindthelens for our family’s shoot. She was fantastic. Just look at these photos.

Another option for booking a vacation photographer is using Flytographer . You can search by the city and book directly on the website. Sign up using my referral link HERE to get a $25 credit on your first shoot.

  • Pirate Ship Cruise with Fireworks

501 East Maxan Street, Port Isabel, TX 78578

This was a really fun family-friendly cruise for the entire family young and old. There is food and drinks (bar) available for purchase at the loading dock. However, you have to consume before you board. There are also drinks (we had margaritas, the kids had slushies) and snacks available to purchase once you board. There were games, music, dancing and of course fireworks to end the cruise. Highly recommend. Facebook: @ospreycruisespadre

  • Private Sandcastle Lessons

4400 Gulf Blvd, South Padre Island, Teaxs 78597

We booked this excursion via Viator as we found it to be the most cost-effective for our small group. There is a specific beach access point that they conduct the lessons, however we were able to request that they come to the beach near our resort and they were so nice to do so (with a tip). Highly Recommend this activity!

Travel Guide: South Padre Island

What to do, what to see South Padre Island

Looking for an island getaway that’s easy to get to, filled with delicious eats and tons of activities? Look no further than South Padre Island! This barrier island has a little something for everyone and is a slice of beachside ( or bayside ) paradise for all us water lovers!

This was my first visit to SPI, and I’m beyond excited to share a comprehensive South Padre Island travel guide with y’all!

Did you know it’s easier than ever to get to the Island? Visiting South Padre is a breeze with direct flights from two airports that serve South Padre Island: Valley International Airport ( Harlingen ) and Brownsville/South Padre Island International Airport. We opted to fly over drive, simply due to cheap flight prices and the fact that the direct flight from Houston to Harlingen is only 45 minutes!

South Padre Island is home to more than 300 days of sunshine every year. And while SPI looks little, it has so much to offer. This little slice of paradise is the perfect spot for a bachelorette, mother-daughter getaway, or even that best friends trip you’ve been discussing for ages. Read our South Padre Island travel guide to help you plan a great getaway. Hope to see you on the Island soon, safe travels!

South Padre Island Travel Guide

Where to stay.

When planning your getaway, I encourage you to consider a condo or beach rental, especially if you’re visiting with family or group of friends. We stayed at the Sapphire Condominium which offers ample space and amenities, along with two, three and four-bedroom offerings.

The Sapphire is a luxury beachfront property with spacious balconies for dining al fresco, after cooking in your condo’s top-of-the-line kitchen. Whether you like to work out in the gym, hang out by the pool or head to the spa, this property offers it all!

South Padre Island travel guide insider tip: If you didn’t bring your own beach chairs, check in with the front desk for beachside daily rentals, but hurry because they reserve quickly!

Where to Eat

Cafe Karma  // Locally-owned coffee shop on the northern side of the island. This low-key spot features delicious lattes and cafe mochas. After a hot day outside, we ordered an Affogato ( espresso poured over ice cream ). Cafe Karma serves light breakfast and lunch, plus they feature live music on select days.

Cafe on the Beach  // A casual dining option located directly on the beach. Definitely don’t bypass the tropical drink offerings, as the Pina Colada is out of this world! Enjoy the ocean breeze at this al fresco spot, and order some Coconut Shrimp or a piece of fresh grilled fish for your main course.

F&B SPI  // Definitely one of the top restaurants on the island! We absolutely loved our meal at this local spot. Upon arriving, you’ll be welcomed by a bright and lively atmosphere, plus experience delicious eats that will have you wanting to return as soon as possible. Come hungry — you’ll want to order a little bit of everything! I highly recommend the seasonal soup or the ceviche of the day to start your meal, one of the fresh fish offerings for your main course and the irresistible chocolate soufflĂ© for dessert. Insider tip: Make a reservation for F&B on their website to avoid waiting on busy evenings.

Padre Island Brewing Company  // Stop in for a cold beer at South Padre’s own brewpub, the second oldest in the state of Texas. All their beers are brewed in-house and there are a number of flight options, as well as happy hour offerings.

The Grapevine Cafe  // Delicious breakfast and lunch spot on the island. Beware, during high season you can experience lengthy wait times before getting seated. This local favorite dining spot features delicious Migas, fluffy omelets and their very own in-house roasted coffee. Try to grab a spot at the counter if it’s busy!

Williedean Bagels  // A family-owned spot with delicious New York style bagels and tasty sandwiches. This little cafe features Instagram-worthy palm frond murals and a super welcoming atmosphere.

Yummies Bistro  // Local favorite, where the pancakes are a must order. Just be aware that wait times can exceed over 45 minutes on weekends, so plan accordingly. We tried to eat at this spot but the wait was long over an hour, so we’ve already got it on our list to try when we return to SPI!

Other notable mentions: Kics Ice Cream Shop ;  Beachside Bar & Grill

South Padre Island surfing for beginners

What to Do

Isla Blanca Park  // Head to the southern end of the Island to enjoy this beach park — you’ll just need to pay a $12 entry fee. This is where the surf scene happens on South Padre Island, and the waves are especially perfect for beginners. People also fish off the jetties.

Laguna BOB  // A casual gathering spot on the bayside of the island. Laguna BOB is a must visit when on the island for live music and drinks. We loved the laidback vibe at this spot, featuring a couple of decks and two outdoor bars. Grab a drink or a beer and sit along the water. The sunsets are a must see from this joint!

Sand Castle lessons // Book a group or private lesson with  The Amazing Walter , Lucinda  “Sandyfeet” Sandcastle Services , or  Andy Hancock Sandcastle Lessons , and try your hand at a creative masterpiece.

Sapphire Spa  // Find this spa first floor of the Sapphire Condominium. This signature Aveda spa offers everything you could possibly need including hair, nails and must-have spa treatments. Let me tell you, the hour-long massage is absolute bliss! Want to do a spa day with the girls? Just be sure to call in advance to book everything your group might need.

They’ll definitely be a reminder of how much fun you had on the Island once your vacation is over.

South Padre Island Adventure Park  // Situated at the far end of the island, past the dunes and across from the beaches which can be driven on with a car. Here you can enjoy a little vacation adventure, including beach horseback rides and ziplining. Group or private horseback rides are available, and at different times during the day. We booked the afternoon ride – it begins at 4pm and is the perfect length of time to enjoy along the beach while still keeping the evening open for dinner.

South Padre Surf Co.   // Book a lesson with owners Gene and Rachel, and you’ll most definitely catch more than one wave. And it’ll be with a smile on your face! We absolutely loved our surf lessons with the duo. We took a group lesson and caught plenty of waves to feel satisfied. I’ve surfed a handful of times and my husband Rick had never surfed before this trip. We both caught plenty of waves. You’ll also meet their Golden Retriever, Archer, who loves to surf, too! They’ll provide you with everything you need, a rash guard and boards, and if you catch the surfers’ stoke, you can rent a board after your lesson for $30/day.

20 Kid-Friendly Activities For Your South Padre Island Family Vacation

1. splash, slide, and swim at the beach park waterpark.

This 25-acre waterpark features more than a dozen slides, eateries, beach access, and more. Big kids can whoosh down slides while even the littlest tikes can splash and play at Sand Castle Cove, the family water playground. As an added bonus, you can pack your own picnic (food and drinks are free to bring in; however, coolers and bags are charged a $12 fee).

2. Hold baby alligators at the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center and Alligator Sanctuary

While a boardwalk stroll and birdwatching are musts when you visit this nature center, it's the Alligator Sanctuary that the kids won't be able to stop talking about. Stop in for a daily Gator Talk and to "meet" Big Padre, a 12' 6" gator. And make sure to add on the $10 Adventure Package, which includes a photo while holding a snake and baby alligator.

3. Climb to the top of the historic Port Isabel Lighthouse

Ascend the 75 steps and two ladders of the 1852 Port Isabel Lighthouse for gorgeous South Padre views and a chance to observe the beautiful 3rd Order Fresnel Lens (but please don't touch). The lighthouse climb is available for kids ages 5 and up. The Keeper's Cottage Visitor's Center museum and grassy public park at the tower's base are great for learning about the structure's history and for family photo ops.

4. Beat the heat at the Port Isabel Historical Museum

This museum is located in the 1899 Champion Building showcasing an exterior fish mural originally painted by a local fisherman in 1906. The two-story building is filled with exhibits that share the history of the Laguna Madre region.

5. Hit the beach

Of course, you can't skip the beach on your South Padre Island trip! Powdery white sands and waters as blue as what you'll find in Florida lure visitors to soak up the sun. Along Gulf Blvd., visitors will find 25 beach access points. Pick your shores, from drive-on options to beaches that have parking, facilities, and even playgrounds. With so many spots along the miles of shoreline, you can choose between quiet spots with a few other visitors or fun times among the crowds.

6. Go on a Dolphin Watch Tour

Cruise the Gulf to spot pods of dolphins swimming in their natural habitats when you take the family on a Dolphin Watch Tour boat. Your little ones will shriek with joy at seeing bottle-nose and spinner dolphins leap from the sparkling waters in a truly unforgettable experience. Either soak up the views with a Sunset Tour or opt for up-close marine life encounters along with dolphin sightings during an Eco Tour.

7. Help save the sea turtles at Sea Turtle, Inc.

Through conservation and rehabilitation efforts, Sea Turtle, Inc., strives to protect these gorgeous creatures. Learn all about the mission and contribute to the cause when you visit. Kids (and parents, let's be real) will love seeing all the turtle residents, from those on the road to release to the life-long residents who aren't fit for open seas. Tours are self-guided, but presentations and turtle feedings are also on the agenda.

8.  Play all day at Gravity Park

This South Padre Island adventure and amusement park features thrills and clean family fun. Whether you're looking for heart-pounding drops on The Rocket reverse-bungee ride or wanting to enjoy a chill game of mini golf with the fam, you'll find something to bring a smile to every face. Go-karts, an arcade, Ferris wheel, trampolines, and more are also available for a fun-filled family day.

9. Saddle up for a horseback ride along the beach with South Padre Island Adventures

A fan-favorite, guests 6 and older can saddle up for a leisurely horseback ride along the shore. Choose from an hour-long ride that's great for families with younger children or enjoy a 1.5-hour morning or sunset ride with these gentle giants. If you time it just right, you can book a Moonlight Horseback Ride (offered only 4 days before and during a full moon) and watch the moon glisten off the waves from a sand-dune lookout.

10. Spot sand sculptures along the Sandcastle Trail

Fitting for what's called the "Sandcastle Capital of the World," South Padre Island is home to the Sandcastle Trail, featuring 23 sand sculptures located throughout the island. These incredible structures, most of which are sandcastles, were created by professional sand artists ranging from local makers to creators from across the globe. You're likely to find them in front of hotels, restaurants, and local attractions, so make a game out of it and cross them off the  map as you visit each one.

11. Learn how to build a sandcastle

Get inspired by the designs along the Sandcastle Trail and try your hand and building your own sand sculpture. A local pro can walk you through the basics, from building a classic castle to sculpting characters and more. Your family will leave with impressive skills to show off next time you're at the beach. Browse the list of sand art experts and get on their schedule for sandcastle lessons.

Take your bounty to dinner with you, where many restaurants will "cook your catch" for the ultimate fresh seafood experience.

Follow the map to spot all 12!

14. Set sail on a pirate ship

Ahoy, mateys! All aboard The Black Dragon pirate ship for a swashbuckling good time the whole family will enjoy. During the cruise, kiddos can take part in interactive adventures, like learning pirate talk, pirate fighting lessons, and treasure hunting.

15. See a rocket launch at the SpaceX Boca Chica launch site

SpaceX is currently testing the  Starship , which it hopes will be able to orbit Earth, the moon, and even Mars. A big part of this, as well as the company's many other projects, includes rocket launches! Catching a rocket launch takes advanced planning (and may end in disappointment if there's a failed or scrubbed launch), but if it all goes right, the experience of watching a rocket launch into the Final Frontier of space is worth navigating the logistics—your kids will get to see some very cool history in the making.

16. Burn off extra energy at a park

South Padre Island has tons of public parks for visitors to explore. Get active at  Andy Bowie Park , which includes a playground, amenities, and beach access, enjoy a quiet picnic among the monarchs and native Texas plants at Butterfly Park, play on exciting structures at Turtle Park, and more.
