Shanghai Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal

Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal (or Wusongkou Cruise Port) is the best-built port in Shanghai. It is located in Paotaiwan Bay, where the Yangtze River meets the Huangpu River and flows into the sea. It is the Yangtze River Delta shipping junction.

The natural water depth advantage and top municipal and service infrstructure make Wusongkou the best cruise terminal. The cruise terminal has a constant depth of 9 to 13 meters in its forepart, 1 to 2 kilometers from the Yangtze main channel. The frontage of the terminal is 1,500 meters in length and 30–40 meters in width.

Its enables 3 big cruise ships of 100,000–150,000 tons to berth at the same time. The total area of its harbor district is more than 160 hectares, of which the core zone takes 49 hectares.

Wusongkou Cruise Port Transportation

Wusongkou Cruise Port is about 25 km from Shanghai center city.

There is no direct public transportation between the port and Shanghai city center. You can go to the port by subway or taxi. By subway, you may need to change lines, and walk some way. The most convenient way is to book a transfer service or take a taxi .

If you prefer to go to other cities on your own, we would like to give you some suggestions as follows.

Suzhou is about 117 km from Wusongkou Cruise Port. The most convenient way to go to Suzhou is to take a taxi from the port. It takes about 2½ hours. You can also take a taxi or subway as above to Shanghai Railway Station, and a bullet train to Suzhou.

Hangzhou is about 205 kilometers from Wusongkou Cruise Port, 3 hours' drive. The best way to go to Hangzhou is to get to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station as above. It takes about 70 minutes. The ticket price is 78–124 yuan.

Nanjing is about 300 kilometers from Wusongkou Cruise Port. It takes about four hours by taxi. We recommend getting to Shanghai Railway Station as above, and taking a bullet train to Nanjing. The trip takes about one hour and 40 minutes.

Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal

Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal is the largest cruise port terminal in Shanghai. It is located on the Huangpu River, near the downtown area, with a water front of 880m, covering 41 hectares.

It can berth three large passenger liners of 70,000 tons–80,000 tons at the same time, with an annual passenger throughput of 1 million .

Shanghai Port Taxi Summary

Shanghai waigaoqiao port cruise terminal.

Shanghai Waigaoqiao Port Cruise Terminal, the third port cruise terminal in Shanghai, is located at Waigaoqiao in Pudong New Area, about 6 kilometers from Wusongkou Port, 30 kilometers from downtown Shanghai. The water in this port is about 12.5 meters deep, which can berth the world's largest cruise ship. The length of the port is about 990 m.

It can berth four large cruise ships at the same time. When ships larger than 87,000 tons can not get to Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal, because of the low bridge over the Huangpu River, they berth at Waigaoqiao Port or Wusongkou Port.

WHATSINPORT.COM: YOUR CRUISE GUIDE TO 1200 PORTS OF CALL

Interactive world cruise map, home | cruise ships | port expenses | hints and tips, shanghai china cruise port guide.

The award-winning Shanghai International Cruise Terminal, close to the famous Bund, designed by Spark Architects and completed in 2011, combines a series of headquarters office buildings with more than 430,000 sq. ft. of retail space within a less than a mile long riverside park. Unfortunately for most cruisers, the facility cannot handle ships larger than 87,000-tons; smaller than most mainstream ships, however, most luxury cruise line vessels, including Crystal, Seabourn, Silversea, Regent, Oceania, fit very nicely. At times you will be docked at a distant berth with no direct access to the terminal building.

With a price tag of more than US$200 million, the huge new Wusong International Cruise Terminal , at a bend in the Huangpu on the Puxi side of the river, is one of the most advanced passenger terminals in the world, and will make Shanghai the first Chinese mainland city with berths for large international cruises. The cruise terminal has a four-storey building for cruise ticketing, waiting and customs (with immigration procedures taking only 48 seconds), and other facilities spread over 300,000m2, including shopping streets, hotels, office buildings, apartments and art centers – the aim being to turn the area into something of a Xintiandi, Shanghai's popular nightlife district. It is about 15 miles north of the city.

Free shuttles provided by the port will drop you off at Baoyang Road Station, where you can take the subway.

By public transportation: From the terminal, you can take a taxi to Baoyang Road Station where you can take the subway line 3 to reach SH Railway Station. From the Railway Station, you can change to subway line 1 to reach People's Square Station. Then change to line 2 to reach East Nanjing Road Station and then walk to the Bund.

The cruise terminal is about 50 minutes driving from Pudong Airport. You can also take the Malev Train (400+ km an hour) from Pudong and take a cab from there.

Large ships could also dock at Waigaoqiao 15 miles to the east which was used before Wusong was open.

Shanghai adopted a 144-hour visa-exemption transit policy concerning certain countries at certain domestic ports of entry starting January 30 2016.

Sightseeing:

Shanghai , a vigorous and energetic international metro-polis, welcomes people from all over the world to enjoy its special atmosphere. This modern metropolis with its rich heritage of ancient Chinese culture has much to see and do.

Shanghai means "Above the sea"

The Oriental Pearl TV Tower is the modern symbol of Shanghai City. Standing beside the Huangpu River with a height of 468 meters (1536 feet), it is the tallest TV tower in Asia and the third highest in the world. This unusual structure that dominates the skyline is a great attraction to tourists.

Nanjing Road is considered to be the "No. 1 commercial street in China". Here along its 5.5 kilometers (3.4 miles), you will find over 600 shops that on average are visited by some 1.7 million people each day. If you like shopping, do not miss it!

Yuyuan Garden is the largest of Shanghai's ancient gardens with architectural styles of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The garden has six areas, each with its own style. The Grand Rockery, in the center of the Garden, is the most renowned sight here.

Shanghai Museum is a veritable treasure house of ancient Chinese art and houses 120,000 precious relics. Bronzes, pottery, paintings and calligraphies are distinctive features of the Museum's collection. Seen from above, the Museum resembles a large bronze mirror of the Han Dynasty (206BC -220). From the distance, it looks like a bronze Ding, an ancient cooking vessel that contains so many mementos of the 5,000-year-old history of Chinese civilization.

Another sight not be missed is the Bund . The bund is best visited just before sunset, you will then see an unique spectacle: Shanghai turns on its light! Situated on the east bank of the Huangpu River , here, one can enjoy the bracing air and fine sunshine as well as seeing something of the many activities along the river. The new finance and commercial houses cluster together along the south of the Bund while along the west there is a wealth of grand buildings in the European architectural styles of the nineteen-twenties, thirties and early forties. Marshal Chen Yi's statue looks down on the square where lively musicians gather to play and sing bringing pleasure to the many people who stop by to listen. At night bright lights add to the happy atmosphere as people stroll along the wide riverside promenade.

The Jade Buddha Temple is one of the most famous Buddhist temples to be found in Shanghai. The White Jade Buddhas were brought here from Burma in the nineteenth century. One is seated while the other is in the recumbent position of Sakyamuni symbolizing the Buddha's attainment of enlightenment or nirvana. The temple also has some impressive images of the Heavenly Kings. Although many people come to worship each day and burn incense at this very holy and active shrine, visitors are welcome.

The Site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China is a typical two-storey brick and timber building of the kind to be seen in Shanghai City. It was here that the founding of the Communist Party of China was announced in 1921. The Former Residence of Sun Yat-sen was once home to the famous Chinese democratic revolutionary and first president of Chinese Kuomintang, Sun Yat-sen and his wife, Song Qingling. The building contains exhibits furniture and personal effects once used by Dr. Sun Yat-sen.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Shanghai is a very easy walkable city and the need for taxis is little.

Hop on/off tours . There is no better way to see Shanghai than by taking one of several hop on/hop off tours.

To get around in the cities, one best uses a taxi: They are cheap and plentiful.

There are roughly three groups of taxi drivers:

Touts: Stay away from them, you are about to pay a multiple of what you should pay, walk a half a block and you will find a honest cabbies. The mechanics: They have build their own taximeter, with all consequences. The honest cabbie: As the Chinese government is clamping down on mistreatment of tourists, this group is in the far majority( >90%), in fact the more south you go in China, the more honest people get. Make sure they put the meter on, otherwise get out!

Important: If you buy a guide book for the town you are about to visit, make sure it is of the latest edition available. This as the pace of construction is enormous: what is here today, might not be there tomorrow! Make sure the maps in your guide book have "english" as well as "chinese" characters, so you and the cabdriver can communicate by pointing at the map. Cabdrivers only speak chinese.

Because not only has Shanghai hired the world’s best architects to design those skyscrapers but also told them that lighting is an essential design element. From dusk to 10 p.m., when most lights are turned off to conserve energy, both sides of the Shanghai riverfront turn into a wonderland. The Bund bathes in neutral lighting; the Pudong side glitters like no other major city in the world. Buildings change colors; they are presented as works of light art; some are gigantic billboards. Take a river cruise to watch this spectacle.

Public transportation (MRT) is excellent. All Shanghai MRT stations have station names in English. Announcements on trains also are made in English.

It pays to compare your cruise line tours here .

Keep an eye out for upscale hotels, if you need to use the restroom.

Nearby Places:

The visitor to Shanghai having marveled at the city's modern architecture and historical sites will be further rewarded when going to see neighboring water towns like Zhujiajiao and Qibao Ancient Town . Here is another world where ancient houses huddle by the rivers running through the towns that with their flagstone-paved roads and typical local flavors will be sure to slow your pace as you savor their traditions.

Shopping and Food

Known as the 'Oriental Paris', Shanghai is a shopper's paradise. One of the musts for tourists is Nanjing Road. Huaihai Road intrigues those with modern and fashionable tastes, while Sichuan North Road meets the demands of ordinary folk. In addition, Xujiahui Shopping Center, Yuyuan Shopping City, Jiali Sleepless City are thriving and popular destinations for those who are seeking to buy something special as a memento of their visit.

When the large department stores open in the morning, the background music will consist of loud communist party songs, to change after an hour of so to regular elevator tunes.

Every large tourist town has at least one or more shopping malls for westerners. Often the only place one can buy larger clothing sizes. Although these malls are fun, please be aware that almost everything is fake and that the bargaining is hard. The quickest way often is to show with bills in your hand, how much you are willing to pay and than walk on. If they than gesture you back finalize the deal. Always stay courteous.

Restaurants are often found in clusters in certain parts of the city, recognizable by very colorful decorations to attract customers. Stroll by and look for restaurants that are patronized by chinese families themselves. Most menu's have pictures of the items served. Seafood in general is kept alive in large tanks. Eating out in China is a feast, with very little etiquette, and in general rather noisy. Enjoy the fun! Only drink bottled water even use that if you have to brush your teeth. Use common precautions when eating out.

The Yuan (or Renminbi RMB).

Occasionally you will be given a counterfeit bill, mostly in a small denomination. Nothing you can do about it, just keep it as a souvenir.

Communication:

Internet is very well adapted in China, in fact even the more modest hotels have almost all WiFi in their rooms and in the public areas you will find Internet stations. Often for free or at a very modest charge. Facebook is blocked in China,

Wi-fi connectivity extends through all of Shanghai MRT Metro. Meaning that when you are underground, you can keep talking or searching.

Emergency number China: 110 Hong Kong and Macao: 999

Opening Hours and Holidays:

There seem not set opening hours for stores, it seems as long as there are customers they stay open.

Chinese New Year (about two weeks long) is the time when all the Chinese are traveling and transportation can be very hectic.

How to Get from Shanghai Cruise Port (Terminals) to Shanghai City

Situated on the south estuary of the Yangtze River and China’s east coast with unique city landscape and mixed culture, Shanghai is also favored by many cruise travelers, including the international cruise and Yangtze River Cruise tourists. When the cruise ships dock in Shanghai, you may make an excursion and have a special city adventure. Under the policies of the 144-Hour Visa-free Transit and 15-Day Visa Free for International Cruise Tour Groups , International cruise tourists even can take advantage of visa-free privileges to have a short Shanghai layover tour without any complicated visa procedures and fees. How to get to Shanghai city from the cruise port? What’s the best transport to central Shanghai? Any recommended Shanghai city tour from cruise port? China Discovery here shows the most useful Shanghai cruise ports transportation guide and offers you the most popular itineraries for your shore excursion in Shanghai.

How Far is Shanghai from the Cruise Ports

Shanghai has two cruise ports (terminals) mostly-used. One is Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal (上海港国际客运中心) in downtown area close to the Bund, about 3 km from Shanghai city center (People’s Square), and the other one is Shanghai Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal (上海吴淞口国际邮轮港码头) in the north coast of the city, nearly 23 km from city center area. There are public transports connecting the cruise ports with city center and other areas of Shanghai. Clearly, transferring from Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal to city center is quite time-consuming by public transit. Besides, the public traffic also takes a lot of time to visit different tourist attractions, quite inefficient, especially when your excursion time is short. Therefore, tourist more prefer a private cruise transfer to downtown .

How to Make the Most of Different Days in Shanghai?

Your Shanghai tour itinerary totally depends on your own schedule and personal interests. If you’re time-tight traveler with only half a day, or just a few hours' layover, the number of sightseeing spots is quite limited, usually 1 ~ 2 attractions in downtown . The Bund is the best recommendation.

If you have a full day , you can arrange a Shanghai city day tour covering about 4 major attractions in central Shanghai , such as stroll along the Bund , explore Chinese classical architecture and local bazaar in Yu Garden , visit the cultural treasury - Shanghai Museum and ascend up one iconic skyscraper, e.g. Shanghai World Financial Center. Above sites are the best city showcases you can’t miss. Or, you can spend the whole day making a special-themed visit of your favorite spot and an attraction in suburb of Shanghai, such as Shanghai Disney Resort, Zhujiajiao Water Town.

If you get two days , then you can visit more attractions, try more local featured activities and travel in a more leisurely way, such as a walking tour in Wukang Road , a visit of Xintiandi or Tianzifang where exhibits modern urban vibe among traditional residential buildings, a relaxing Huangpu River Cruise , etc.

Most Popular Shanghai City Tours:

  • 2 Days Classic Shanghai City Tour
  • 3 Days Shanghai Past & Present Contrast Tour

3 Days Shanghai Highlights Tour with Water Town

  • 3 Days Shanghai Family Holiday Tour

With three days and more , it’s highly suggested extending your Shanghai city tour with a side trip to Hangzhou, Suzhou . In Suzhou, you can use 1 day to visit a poetic and elegant Chinese classical garden, a peaceful water town with authentic settlements and lifestyle and learn Chinese silk culture. And you can also leave 2 days visiting more exquisite gardens and cultural sites in Suzhou. Similarly, you can make a day trip with beautiful Wold Heritage - West Lake and Chinese tea culture learning in Hangzhou, or take 2 and more days to discover more attractions.

Shanghai (Baoshan) China Port Guide

Shanghai is not only the biggest city in China, but is perhaps also its beating heart, where a cosmopolitan backdrop collides with culture, history, and some of the world’s tallest skyscrapers. A view from the top of Jin Mao Tower or the Shanghai Tower is a must-do, where tourists can admire the vastness of the city.

Of course, a Shanghai cruise is about more than the city’s high energy or the beautiful architecture, ranging from art deco to Jesuit styles. It’s a cultural hub where travelers can experience art, food, museums, and historic temples one after the other. Before you board a cruise from Shanghai, you must explore everything the city has to offer. Explore the shops and stalls on Nanjing Road. Walk around traditional Chinese garden Yu Garden. Take a leisurely stroll along a riverside promenade called the Bund, then stop in for tea, cocktails, or a bite to eat before dancing the night away at one of the luxe dance clubs along the waterfront.

Shanghai is a highlight on any Asia cruise , so be sure to leave time to explore the city on your own or book a guided excursion to fully enjoy the affectionately nicknamed “Paris of the East.”

Please Note: While we don't currently sail to Baoshan, you can still discover the beauty of the country on one of our China cruises . Browse our luxury cruises to China below.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to shanghai (baoshan), jade buddha temple.

After a Burmese monk brought two jade Buddha statues to Shanghai, a temple was constructed to honor them. The Jade Buddha Temple was built and subsequently destroyed in the late 19th century. Luckily, the Buddhas made it out safely. Stop in the new temple, built in 1928, to see these enduring, significant cultural relics during your Shanghai cruise.

Shanghai Ocean Aquarium

Animal lovers and kids will love the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium, where hundreds of fish species and rare water dwellers live. Take an afternoon to tour the aquarium’s zones, which represent different parts of the world. There’s an Australia zone, a Polar Zone, a China zone, and several others. See emperor penguins, electric eels, seahorses, and many more endangered species.

This pedestrian-only shopping and entertainment district takes you back to the Shanghai of the roaring 1920s, where romantic European-style bars and upscale dining collide. Walk the tree-lined streets and enjoy the unique stone-gate architectural style called shikumen.

Yuyuan Garden

In Old Town, the traditional Yuyuan Garden is one Shanghai’s most enduring, special sights, dating back hundreds of years to the Ming Dynasty. In spring, magnolias and cherry trees bloom. The area is known for its teahouses, so stopping in for a tea break is a must. It gets packed by the afternoon, so plan accordingly.

Nanjing Road

Nanjing Road is where the shopping magic happens in Shanghai. It starts at the Bund and continues for over three miles of boutiques, department stores, and upscale brands like Tiffany & Co. It’s also a good spot for a bite to eat, where you can experience traditional Shanghai cuisine when you’re worn out from a day of shopping.

Learn More About Shanghai (Baoshan) Shore Excursions

Top things to do in shanghai (baoshan), walk along the bund.

An early morning stroll here before coffee or breakfast is the best time to walk the Bund, where skyscrapers and colonial-style buildings rise on one side and Huangpu River views wait on the other. Starting your day here gives you time to quietly reflect and enjoy the atmosphere while locals and runners fly by you. When you’re tired of walking, head to a nearby cafe or one of the many boutiques the Bund is famous for.

Learn Chinese History at the Shanghai Museum

Celebrate the Ming and Qing dynasties at the Shanghai Museum, where you’ll stand among historic bronze statues, preserved Chinese clothing and artifacts, jade, and curated collections of ceramics. Entrance is free, and the four floors of the museum are guaranteed to keep you busy and mystified for an afternoon. Shanghai Museum is an informative, easy way to learn the history and culture of the city.

Tour the Old French Concession

Once occupied by the French in the mid-19th century all the way until the 1940s, the French quarter stands out from other parts of Shanghai. The colonial buildings will transport you to another part of the world, and the European-style villas seem like something out of a movie set. A walking tour, followed by some shopping, is a good way to take it all in.

Take a Ferry Ride

A ferry ride across the Huangpu River is a cheap way to see more of Shanghai from a different vantage point. You’ll see skyscrapers like the impossibly tall Shanghai World Financial Center and the French colonial buildings of the French Concession in the distance, too.

Climb to the Top of Jin Mao Tower

As the third tallest skyscraper in Shanghai, the Jin Mao Tower has a reputation for having some of the best views in Shanghai. Head up to the observation tower to take in a panoramic scene of the city and the Huangpu River. From the 88th floor, the city will feel like it’s all yours.

Address: 1037 Yuyuan Rd; 愚园路1037号, China

Private rooms and deluxe service mean that your meal at Fú Hé Huì is bound to be a unique experience.

Yang’s Fry Dumplings

Address: 97 Huanghe Rd; 黄河路97号, China

Culture & History of the Shanghai (Baoshan) Cruise Port

A major port city throughout history dating back to the Ming dynasty, Shanghai is the city that opened the doors of China to the world. Shipping and trading have been the major industry of Shanghai for centuries. The rise of communism in the mid-20th century shuttered Shanghai off as a global powerhouse, but today the city has reclaimed its place in the international stock exchange and has seen major economic growth

.With a population of nearly 24 million, Shanghai is currently one of the biggest cities in the world, and it strikes a balance between sheer size and its enduring cultural footprint with ease. Nicknamed the “Paris of the East,” Shanghai is both modern and delicate in some ways, a city of lights and centuries of rich history waiting to be explored.

Shanghai (Baoshan) Port Facilities & Location

Before you board a cruise from Shanghai, you’ll be welcomed to the unique glass terminal building, one of the most distinct cruise terminals in the world. It’s shaped like a bubble, making it hard to miss. Before you board, get in some quick duty-free shopping in the terminal or exchange currency if you haven’t yet. There are also plenty of restaurants for you to grab a quick bite at the cruise port as well.

Transportation in Shanghai (Baoshan)

There are plenty of ways to get around before you board your cruise from Shanghai, but it’s especially helpful if you already know a little bit of Mandarin. Sightseeing buses are popular with tourists, while city buses are best for locals who know their way around. It’s pretty easy to hail a taxi in Shanghai, and the fares tend to be affordable too.Of course, Shanghai’s robust metro system is both fast and convenient. Entrances all over the city are marked with a red “M” sign. Getting to the Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal from the city center is about a 30-minute taxi ride, so be sure to leave a little extra time to get to your cruise ship.

Shopping Near the Shanghai (Baoshan) Cruise Port

Shopping in Shanghai is plentiful, from high-end boutiques selling designer wares to souvenir shacks selling authentic Chinese jade, wood carvings, and locally made goods. Knockoffs and designer lookalikes are all part of the experience here. Try your hand at haggling and bargaining when you’re shopping at markets and stalls like the ones along Qipu Lu, as haggling is practically a part of the culture in Shanghai. For books and art, try the shops along Fuzhou Road. There’s also an indoor market near the Science and Technology Museum if you fancy getting some shopping done after a day’s worth of museum tours.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The official currency is China is the Yuan (CNY), and you can exchange currency at banks in Shanghai as long as you have your passport. Currency exchanges are also popular. Keep a little cash handy or withdraw some from the ATMs scattered across the city, which typically accept Visa and MasterCard. Credit cards are more often accepted in Shanghai than other cities in China, but it’s wise to carry enough cash to cover tickets, admission, or taxi costs. Tipping isn’t widely practiced in China. You won’t have to leave a tip at bars or for your taxi driver, and most restaurants come with the service charge already included.

Bookings soar for long-distance cruise trips from Shanghai

China's cruise market has shown robust development momentum with bookings of long-distance voyages surpassing short-distance cruises for the first time, the world's largest cruise line Royal Caribbean International said on Monday.

Spectrum of the Seas, one of Asia's largest cruise ships, resumed international itineraries from Wusongkou International Cruise Port in Baoshan District in late April.

Family suites on some popular routes for the summer vacation have sold out, and bookings for the second quarter are projected to rise by 400 percent compared with pre-pandemic levels, it said.

A fireworks show marks the return of Spectrum of the Seas at Wusongkou International Cruise Port.

For the first time, sales of long-distance voyages surpassed those of a short-distance by 500 percent, reflecting a growing demand by Chinese travelers for in-depth experiences, it said.

"Royal Caribbean International is eager to return to the Chinese market, which fully displays our firm confidence in the development potential of the Chinese market that had experienced explosive growth in a decade before the pandemic," said Liu Zinan, chairman of Royal Caribbean Asia.

Energetic performers entertain cruise ship passengers.

The US$1.25 billion Spectrum, a Quantum Ultra Class flagship, is a 170,000-ton cruise ship customized by Royal Caribbean for the Chinese market in 2019.

With a maximum capacity of 5,622 passengers, it has a number of restaurants with regionally inspired menus and entertainment shows, as well as activities such as skydiving and being hoisted 300 feet above the ocean in an all-glass observation capsule.

"The menus have been upgraded and we have introduced new-style Sichuan cuisines to cater to the appetite of the young generation," said Liu.

Bumper cars are among many activities available on board.

The average age of passengers booking tours of the ship this year is 2.6 years younger compared with the same period in 2019, and the percentage of those aged between 25 and 55 has grown by 20 percent, according to Royal Caribbean.

"More young travelers aged below 30 and between 30 and 40 are booking cruise tours," Liu said. "Moreover, the first sold out suites were balcony suites instead of cheaper inside cabins as seen in the past, which reflects a stronger pursuit of vacation experience among Chinese travelers."

A performance enjoyed by cruise ship passengers.

Bookings from overseas are also very strong since the ship resumed operation, said Liu.

"Each voyage has about five or 10 percent of international tourists who fly to Shanghai and take the ship out, and we found Shanghai is a very alluring destination among many overseas travelers," said Liu. "Our target is to raise the percentage to 30 percent or even more to boost Shanghai's inbound tourism market," he said.

So far this year, nearly 10,000 international tourists have sailed with Royal Caribbean to China.

The ship is scheduled to operate 48 voyages between four and seven nights from Baoshan this year and sail for destinations such as Tokyo, Osaka, Kumamoto and Okinawa.

"China has a very good and international business environment, and Royal Caribbean International will stick to the market," said Liu.

Spectrum of the Seas at Wusongkou International Cruise Port.

The Spectrum of the Seas docked with more than 4,000 passengers in late April, setting a new record at the Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal.

With plans to handle more than 1.4 million passengers this year, the terminal plays a crucial role in international travel and economic development, the Baoshan district government said.

Shanghai is Asia's largest cruise home port and the world's fourth-largest. Between 2008 and 2020, the city received around 3,000 cruise liners, resulting in 15 million trips from domestic and international tourists, according to the Shanghai Administration of Culture and Tourism.

The Wusongkou International Cruise Liner Port aims to become a major destination for international cruise ships, targeting 300 ship visits and 2.7 million visitors annually by 2025.

If your idea of getting away from it all includes a vacation without the kids, consider booking an adults-only or adults-oriented cruise . While some lines provide a fully adults-only experience (i.e., children are not allowed on board), others offer adult-focused venues and activities on the ship to keep you separate from younger patrons.

The following cruise lines provide upscale amenities, immersive excursions, sophisticated dining options, lively nighttime entertainment and time for relaxation among like-minded – and similarly aged – travelers.

Viking also hosts onboard enrichment programs like cooking classes and lectures by historians. Cruise fares include stateroom accommodations with a private veranda, all meals (including specialty dining venues), wine and beer at onboard lunch and dinner, 24-hour room service, one free excursion per port, complimentary Wi-Fi access, and access to onboard amenities such as the Nordic Spa and fitness center.

In addition to its ocean vessels, Viking offers river cruises in destinations around the world – including Mississippi River cruises aboard Viking Mississippi. The superyacht-inspired vessels boast 20-plus eateries, including restaurants by Michelin-starred chefs, and a variety of onboard fitness and wellness spaces. At Redemption Spa, relax and recharge in the mud room or salt therapy chamber – and then take rejuvenating dips in the hot and cold plunge pools. You can even order a bottle of bubbly anywhere on the ship via the Virgin Voyages app's secret "Shake for Champagne" feature.

Itineraries on Virgin Voyages span destinations in the Caribbean, Europe and Morocco, as well as trans-Atlantic crossings. P&O Cruises

Two ships in P&O Cruises' U.K.-based fleet – Arcadia and Aurora – are exclusively for adults 18 and older. Arcadia, the slightly newer of the two ships (debuted in 2005), carries 2,094 guests at double occupancy, plus 866 crew. The ship departs from Southampton in the U.K. and sails to a variety of European destinations, ranging from Spain and the Canary Islands to Norway and Iceland; some cruises visit the U.S. and Canada. The ship will also sail world cruises in January 2025 and 2026.

Arcadia's 15 restaurants, cafes and bars include Indian cuisine with a British twist at Sindhu, as well as steaks and seafood by renowned British chef Marco Pierre White at Ocean Grill. Passengers can take a class to sample the line's branded gins; sip Champagne at Intermezzo, the ship's cocktail and Champagne venue; or enjoy a pre-dinner aperitif at the yacht-inspired Spinnaker. After exploring exciting ports of call, head back on board to enjoy Arcadia's elegant interiors and top-notch service. You can splurge on a stone therapy treatment and a visit to the thermal suite at the spa for some extra pampering, followed by a live show at the three-tiered theater, The Palladium. Then, finish off the evening dancing the night away at The Globe.

Aurora is a slightly more intimate ship, carrying 1,874 passengers (double occupancy) and 850 crew members. A four-level atrium gallery sits at the heart of the vessel. Itineraries include destinations in the Mediterranean, the Baltic, the British Isles, Iceland, the Caribbean and South America. There are 19 restaurants, bars and cafes on the ship, including club-style restaurant Alexandria and casual spots like The Beach House. After dinner, live entertainment and dancing await you at the show lounge Carmen's, as do larger productions at the ritzy 660-seat Curzon Theatre.

Top Cruises Designed for Adults

While some all-inclusive – or mostly all-inclusive – boutique and luxury cruise lines are family-friendly, many of the onboard venues and activities are adult-by-design. Since there are few (or no) activities geared toward younger cruisers and no babysitting services, you typically won't find parents with young children on these ships.

Azamara's four upscale boutique ships provide immersive travel experiences geared toward adults. These smaller ships – accommodating a maximum of 702 guests – sail waterways and rivers that larger ships can't access, docking in city centers and unique ports of call around the globe.

Many Azamara voyages also offer longer stays and overnights in port, unlike some competitors' itineraries. Some even feature special events, such as a 12-night voyage from Rome to watch the Monaco Grand Prix in May 2025, or a 25-night cruise in February 2025 from Buenos Aires, Argentina , to attend Carnival in Rio de Janeiro . In addition, the line is extending its offerings on Country Intensive voyages in 2024 and 2025 with itineraries in various continental European countries, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Iceland and Australia.

On board, you'll find a wide selection of casual and formal dining options ranging from Windows Cafe to the main dining room, Discoveries Restaurant. Specialty restaurant offerings include top-notch steak and seafood at Prime C and Italian fare at Aqualina. Atlas Bar is a unique venue on Azamara Onward (the line's newest ship), though its artisanal cocktail menu is also available on the line's other ships. Discoveries Lounge is another guest-favorite spot, and wine aficionados will enjoy pairing limited-production and rare vintages from the Wine Cellar with dinner.

Cruise fares include stateroom accommodations; select spirits, wine and beer; gratuities; 24-hour room service; and nonalcoholic beverages. You'll also have access to complimentary AzAmazing Celebrations with special evening and daytime events ashore and on the ship. You can purchase a package that includes additional amenities like unlimited Wi-Fi, specialty dining, shore excursion credits and other perks. Butler service and other extras come with suite accommodations.

When it launched in 2019, Scenic Eclipse I was touted as "The World's First Discovery Yacht." The intimate vessel offers an all-inclusive, ultra-luxurious experience for just 228 guests (double occupancy). The line's second luxury yacht, Scenic Eclipse II, which is nearly identical to its sister ship, debuted from Lisbon, Portugal , in April 2023. The Polar Class 6 rating enables these two yachts to sail to destinations like Antarctica; on these expedition-style voyages, the ship carries only 200 guests and offers a nearly one-to-one crew-to-guest ratio.

All suite accommodations include a private veranda or terrace; butler service; state-of-the-art amenities; a king-size Scenic Slumber Bed; and an in-suite minibar stocked with wine, spirits and other personally selected beverages. You'll also find indulgences like onboard helicopters for intimate excursions and the line's submersibles for underwater exploration.

Guests can enjoy up to 10 dining experiences on the ship, including French fine dining at Lumière; innovative Asian flavors at Koko's Asian Fusion; Italian, steak and seafood specialties at Elements; or an immersive dining experience at Chef's Garden @ Epicure. When it's time for an after-dinner drink, sample craft cocktails or the impressive selection of whiskeys available at Scenic Lounge Bar. Other onboard activities include getting an invigorating treatment at Senses Spa or just relaxing with Champagne and spectacular views on deck 10 at the Sky Bar.

Scenic's ships sail to destinations in Australia and the South Pacific; Europe and the Mediterranean; Asia; the Americas and the Caribbean; and the polar regions of Antarctica and the Arctic.

Seabourn features an all-inclusive adult-focused experience on its five luxury ocean vessels and two expedition ships. Windstar's six intimate ships accommodate between 148 and 342 guests. Passengers can choose between cruising on one of the line's three-masted Wind Class vessels or one of its three Star Plus Class ships.

Windstar just announced the addition of two new ships to its fleet; Star Seeker is expected to launch in December 2025, followed by Star Explorer in December 2026. These two vessels will feature 112 suites with private verandas and infinity windows, two Owner's Suites with wraparound balconies, a water sports platform, a two-story spa and fitness center, and more. The ships are constructed with ice-strengthened hulls that position them for exploration in remote destinations like Antarctica.

They also offer more than 2,000 immersive cultural experiences in port, many with small groups. You'll find culinary-themed voyages in partnership with the James Beard Foundation, as well as wine-focused itineraries around the world. What's more, Windstar's itineraries offer late evenings and overnights in its ports of call, allowing guests to experience local culture and cuisine after dark.

Windstar will begin sailing in South America in December 2025 with the 312-passenger (double occupancy) Star Pride, offering excursions to UNESCO World Heritage Sites like the town of Cusco , Machu Picchu and the Galápagos Islands .

Other Top Adults-Only Cruise Options

While these larger ships offer activities for families and children of all ages, adults can also find hidden retreats and venues just for grown-ups. These spaces are typically quieter and situated away from the crowds.

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises offers spaces created with adult guests in mind. On Celebrity Beyond and the newest addition to the fleet, Celebrity Ascent , adults can have a unique dining experience at Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud. The world-renowned Global Culinary Ambassador for the line, Daniel Boulud created the menu at this elegant venue, incorporating dishes inspired by his travels. You'll also find an impressive wine list to accompany your dining experience.

When it's time to relax, The Solarium is a popular adults-only area located on the Resort Deck of all Celebrity ships. This light-filled pool area encased by a glass dome is the perfect quiet space for reading a book or taking a nap. While there, you can also grab a light breakfast or lunch at the Spa Cafe and Juice Bar, or order your favorite cocktail while lounging in the hot tub.

Other adult-focused venues to check out on Celebrity Ascent, Beyond and Apex are the new elevated bar spaces. The Edge series World Class Bar – a popular spot on other Celebrity Cruises ships – features craft cocktails in a beautiful setting. And don't miss the two-story Sunset Bar on Celebrity Ascent, a reimagined space by interior designer and TV personality Nate Berkus. The aft location of the bar offers almost twice the space as previous iterations and beautiful wake views.

Princess Cruises

The Sanctuary, a retreat for guests ages 18 and older, offers an escape from bustling public spaces. The relaxing top-deck venue is available on all Princess Cruises ships and features plush lounge chairs, a spa-like setting and Serenity Stewards, who serve light bites and other refreshments. To fully unwind, consider reserving a private cabana, where you can book an open-air massage. The child-free venue varies from ship to ship, with some offering the exclusive Retreat pool, cabanas and a bar area, and newer iterations featuring more space.

Spellbound by Magic Castle is an exciting new venue aboard the line's newest ship, Sun Princess, for adults 21 and older. The collaboration with The Magic Castle private club in Hollywood offers guests an evening of magic, illusions and theatrical cocktails in a Victorian-inspired space.

If you're heading off the ship for an excursion to Princess Cays (the cruise line's private island in the Bahamas), plan to chill out for the day in an adults-only Sanctuary Bungalow. Located just minutes from the ocean and beach, the rentals accommodate four people, and the price includes two complimentary float rentals. You can also order a gourmet picnic to enjoy while lounging on shore.

Back on the ship, adults can reserve a spot for the line's new Winemaker Dinners, a partnership with Caymus Vineyards. These 12-guest evenings are offered fleetwide, two to three times during each cruise. Winemaker Chuck Wagner personally selected the wines from the notable Napa Valley winery to pair with the elevated five-course menu.

Carnival Cruise Line

Though Disney Cruise Line tends to attract families and younger travelers, it also offers multiple spaces and activities for adults 18 and older. Disney's newest ship, Disney Wish , boasts several luxurious adults-only venues featuring characters and scenes from "Beauty and the Beast."

For top-notch steaks, contemporary Italian cuisine and panoramic ocean views, make a reservation at the Cogsworth-inspired Palo Steakhouse. If you prefer French-style fare and world-class wines served in an elegant and shimmering setting, Enchanté by three-Michelin-starred chef Arnaud Lallement is the perfect place for a romantic dinner for two. Before dinner at either venue, enjoy a signature cocktail at The Rose. After dinner, you won't want to miss the galactic libations and ever-changing views of faraway galaxies at the adults-only Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge bar.

Depending on the ship, adult travelers can also dance the night away in a trendy club, watch live entertainment or a cabaret show, catch a sports game on satellite TV, or relax with an after-dinner cocktail at a bar or lounge. Outdoors, the kid-free Quiet Cove Pool is a tranquil place to relax on all the ships. For even more pampering, Senses Spa & Salon boasts treatment rooms with ocean views, luxurious spa villas and other amenities. On Castaway Cay, Disney Cruise Line 's private island, adults can head to Serenity Bay – a scenic, adults-only stretch of the beach.

You can purchase a multiday pass in advance for the club, and cabana rentals are available for more privacy.

At Norwegian Epic's two-level Posh Beach Club, complimentary perks include fruit skewers, cold water spritzers and a snack menu. Multiday passes are available to all adult cruisers, while travelers who book a Haven suite can access Posh Beach Club for free. Spice H2O is another adults-only venue on the Norwegian Bliss, Joy, Escape, Getaway, Breakaway, Epic, Star and Spirit vessels; access is complimentary. At night, the space becomes an open-air dance club where you can spend the evening partying under the stars.

Royal Caribbean International

Solarium is Royal Caribbean International 's complimentary, child-free space open to guests 18 and older. Located at the front of every ship in the fleet, this indoor-outdoor oasis (or indoor-only on Quantum Class ships) offers impressive vistas and endless views of the sea. Thanks to a full glass canopy over the interior space, adult passengers can enjoy quiet lounging areas, swimming pools and whirlpool tubs with a view, no matter the weather. Select ships feature a cascading lagoon for further relaxation.

Be sure to grab a tropical cocktail or zero-proof drink at Solarium Bar (or Sunshine Bar, on Quantum ships) to sip poolside while enjoying the ocean vistas. Guests of both bars must be at least 21 years old when sailing from North America or a minimum of 18 when departing from South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

Adult cruisers (18 and older) can relax and chill out at the first suspended infinity pool at sea at The Hideaway on Royal Caribbean's newest ship, Icon of the Seas. The beach-vibe neighborhood, perched eight stories above the sea at the back of the ship, features Champagne cocktails, a DJ spinning tunes, full-size daybeds, a wraparound bar, and endless ocean and sunset views from the multilevel terrace.

Frequently Asked Questions

"Adults-only cruise ships – or adults-only spaces on cruise ships – have become increasingly popular over the years," says Chris Gray Faust, executive editor at Cruise Critic. "That's not only because fewer people are having families. It's also because parents themselves often want the chance to get away, either by themselves for a romantic trip or with friends to celebrate a special occasion, girls' or guys' weekend, or milestone birthdays."

"I seek out adult spaces on cruise ships primarily because I want my experience on a ship to mirror my life on land – a little quieter, with more sophisticated food and drink options," she explains. "I also appreciate the opportunity to connect with my friends who are parents in a space where we can have personal one-on-one conversations or let loose a bit with some drinks. Adults with children are more than just their kids, after all – and they also appreciate a space where they don't have to worry about their little ones."

Anne Scully, a partner at the luxury travel company EMBARK Beyond, says, "With so many cruise lines and sailings, it's always a good idea to have options – and adults-only cruises are very popular." She adds, "Viking and Virgin have always focused on adults-only cruises and most river cruises also cater to adult passengers."

Adults-only cruises are designed with guests ages 18 and older in mind, from the staterooms and dining venues to the onboard entertainment and shore excursions. What you typically won't find on board are water or theme parks, climbing walls, game rooms, and restaurants serving kid-friendly foods.

If you're looking for a relaxing, fun and romantic vacation without the kids in tow – and you don't want to deal with the other passengers' children on your getaway – consider booking a sailing specifically for cruisers at least 18 years old. Alternatively, select a cruise line or ship that caters to mostly adults and doesn't offer any services, kids clubs, babysitting or activities for children.

You don't have to be a kid to be a Disney Cruise Line fan. While the line does not have an adults-only vessel within the fleet, there are plenty of kid-free spaces for adults only. Adults can enjoy cocktails, dinner and entertainment in several venues and relax at designated pool areas on the ship. There's also private, adults-only stretch of beach, Serenity Bay, on the line's private island, Castaway Cay.

In addition, Disney offers one of the best programs to keep youngsters entertained at sea, so you'll find that many of the children hang out in the kids club during the day and in the evening. These club spaces are divided by age groups, and they're typically open until midnight or 1 a.m. so parents – and even adults without kids – can enjoy a night out on the ship sans kids.
