CYCLING WITH SEDDON: THE 60-MILE ON-THE-ROAD NETWORKING EVENT

Harris Lamb’s super-keen cycling crew jumped back into the saddle this month to take part in a networking event with a twist – insomuch that it took place over a 60-mile challenge.

The Seddon Tour de Peak District took place last Friday (September 22 nd ), having been organised by construction specialists  Seddon .

The event saw more than 70 participants from varying professional services sectors congregate at Shrigley Hall in Macclesfield before being divided into teams for a staggered start and on-the-road networking.

Andrew Groves and Mike Burr from Harris Lamb’s Stoke office were joined by Fiona Mellor of the Valuation team, Andy Smith from our Lease Advisory department and John Pearce from our Planning Consultancy – all of whom are seasoned cyclists who will jump at any chance to hit the road on two wheels!

CYCLING WITH SEDDON: THE 60-MILE ON-THE-ROAD NETWORKING EVENT

Mike said: “This was such a refreshing approach to networking; ensuring that everyone took themselves out of the conference room and into the great outdoors to get to know more about one another, the businesses and sectors we each work within, and to get the blood pumping as well as ideas flowing.

“The whole route took in 60 miles of wonderful views and villages throughout the Peak District and Cheshire, and while the first half of the ride saw fine, dry weather, by the time we headed out of the hills for the second portion of the event, it was well and truly torrential, and everyone was soaked but exhilarated all the same!

“The event was extremely well organised, with Seddon ensuring vans followed all participants with refreshments and repair kits in case they were needed, and we made some great contacts as well as thoroughly enjoying the day – we’d like to thank Seddon for including us and for coming up with such an innovative approach to corporate networking!”

About this route

Tour between picturesque Derbyshire villages and rural upland views along gentle packhorse trails, ancient toll roads, and quiet lanes on a self-guided cycling holiday. This 160-mile circular route celebrates Britain's first national park, the Peak District, with an engaging lap around its perimeter.

From bustling Matlock, the Tour de Peak District heads along grassy lanes past Oaker, Parson House, and More Hall and Langsett Reservoirs. There's a steep climb from Marsden that rises over Redbrook Reservoir before sweeping into Diggle and beyond along a disused railway track. A wooded riverside trail squirms on from Carrbrook, past Upper Swineshaw, and across Ogden Brook. The route follows Middlewood Way past Whaley Bridge and rises to Gun Moor before the final day’s riding brings it back to Matlock.

Although it includes wholly road-based alternatives for the strictly-street cyclist, the Tour de Peak District is still one of the best for anyone looking to try a few easy off-road stretches.

Holiday highlights

Enjoying endless natural beauty, from the wild moors of the Dark Peak, punctured by crops of black granite and windswept heather, to the long, thin medieval strip fields of the White Peak area.

Challenging yourself with stand-out climbs, like the departures from Marsden and Whaley Bridge, and the trek from Thorncliffe to the ridgeline.

Blasting down the sweeping descent into Disley -- just one of many brilliant downhill charges on this rising, diving route.

Tour De Peak District Route Profile

Gentle climbs and descents roll between  steeper sections .

The departure from Marsden is particularly challenging. Other stand-out climbs feature after Whaley Bridge and the trek from Thorncliffe up to the ridge line, both of which boast panoramic views at their summits.

One of the best  descents , meanwhile, leads the way into Disley. It’s a wonderfully sweeping stretch of road – one of many on this rising, diving route .

  • Country lanes
  • Hard-packed trails
  • Old railway lines
  • Road alternatives

The Tour de Peak District follows  country lanes  as it circles the border of the Peak District National Park. In places it departs the tarmac along  green pathways  and  hard-packed trails , including sections of the Pennine Bridleway.

A  hybrid bicycle  is best-suited to these off-road diversions, but there is always a road-based alternative to hand for cyclists on  road bicycles .

August 2019: Whaley Bridge/Toddbrook Dam damage

The Toddbrook dam was severely damaged by floodwater after very heavy rain early in August 2019 and threatened to collapse with extreme risk to life if it had failed. TdPD and other routes in the Cycling in the Peak District guidebook are thought to be unaffected as a result of this incident, but as ever if you come across something on the ground, please let my publishers at Cicerone Press know. Dam repairs may take up to 3 years to complete, so it may be worth paying attention to Derbyshire roadworks info in case roads have to be shut during this time to facilitate repairs.

The Tour de Peak District (TdPD) Route  is a challenging three to five day cycle route, which roughly follows the boundaries of the Peak District National Park. The TdPD originated from the casual observation that the defined eastern boundary of the Peak District happens to follow some delightful quiet roads in very scenic but less well-known areas – and so the idea of turning the Peak District boundary into a circular route was born. Enter a 250km (155-mile) multi-day challenge that takes ‘the nearest nice line to the Peak District National Park boundary”.

It is a challenge though – particularly on Day Three – and not a gentle route in every part, so if you’re new to cycling it’s best saved until you’ve got a reasonable amount of experience under your wheels!

Upper Midhope (Chiz Dakin)

There are now two variations of the TdPD route – the main route has some lovely (and occasionally quite challenging!) off-road sections in it. And a road variant which avoids off-road sections, but tackles some more urban roads on the western boundary. Other than day three, where the routes diverge more widely, most of the road alternatives are quite short, and you can choose whether or not to take each one as it comes – according to your preference for terrain, and the capabilities of your bike.

The TdPD is a pleasant multi-day cycling challenge that anyone with moderate fitness and reasonable cycling ability can achieve, but those new to cycling are well advised to tackle a number of easier and shorter routes before working up to this route – ideally with at least a single overnight trip beforehand to work out what (isn’t!) needed on a multi-day trip!

Also, do note, a few of the off-road sections – particularly on Day Three – are quite challenging and are entering into the easier realms of mountain biking territory. There’s a few introductory challenges on Bobus Moor, and a tougher section from Carrbrook over Lees Hill and down to cross the Ogden Brook. But none of the really challenging off-road sections are individually very long.

Likewise on Day Three the road version does venture more onto busy or fast A roads and is often in more urban terrain particularly on the Standedge cutting and around Stalybridge to Broadbottom – there simply isn’t a better alternative at present.

Distance : 255km (150 miles)

Total Ascent/Descent : 6200m

Recommended Duration (either main or road route) :

  • Moderately fit person with good off-road cycling experience/ability to handle A road alternatives: 5days (roughly 50km/30miles a day)
  • Regular and committed cyclists: 3-4 days (roughly 80km/50miles a day)
  • Superfit enduro types: your challenge is to do it in 24hrs (Is this possible? I don’t know, but I’m not an ultra-fit enduro-type – that’s why it’s your challenge!).

If using an ultralight performance “best” road bike, please note the road version does use some sustrans trails – you may need to detour onto busier roads of your own choosing if this is not to your liking.

Recommended access points/Overnight stops:

  • Matlock (access point and overnight stop)
  • Dungworth (overnight stop 5 dayer)
  • Marsden (access point and overnight stop 3 or 5 dayer)
  • New Mills (access point and overnight stop MAIN route 3 or 5 dayer)
  • Whaley Bridge (access point and overnight stop ROAD route 3 or 5 dayer)
  • Macclesfield (access point and overnight stop 3 dayer)
  • Blackshaw Moor (nr Leek) or Waterhouses (overnight stop 5 dayer)

Click here for a map showing potential refreshment stops along the route .

Or here for a map showing accommodation along the route.

Prefer to ride in an organised group? Our official route guide partner for the Tour de Peak District is PeakCyclingUK who now offer four-day guided tours along the route. I’ll let Paul from PeakCyclingUK tell you what they offer:

“We run guided tours around the fantastic Tour de Peak District, leading you on the road and trail, supporting your needs with a brew van and regular stops, include a proper cafe lunch and move all your stuff for you.  We are qualified British Cycling Level 3 Leaders, experienced in taking groups out on road, gravel and MTBs, and know the Peak District really well.   Please take a look at our website for prices and details of the next trip ” Paul Gant, Peak Cycling UK

The route is described in full in Chiz Dakin’s Cycling in the Peak District guidebook (published by Cicerone Press).

seddon tour de peak district 2023

It should be noted, the route does not stick absolutely religiously to the boundaries of the national park. In some cases there is no permissible path for cyclists along the boundary, in which case the nearest “nicest available” route is taken. In other cases, where a more pleasant off-road route or quiet country lane exists near to one running along the boundary, the nicer route is also used. And the route cuts across the gap created by the exclusion of Buxton from the national park.

Purists may disagree with these choices, but they are welcome to devise their own variation!

THE RACE: The Peaks 2 Day is a National B stage race on the 18th and 19th of March 2023 in the Peak District. There will be men’s and women’s races with equal prize money, leaders jerseys and KOM jerseys. There will also be a team prize. The format of the race has slightly changed this year with the men’s and women’s time trials on separate days in order to cater for more riders and to allow the race to run smoother. This event is open to Elite, 1st, 2nd and 3rd category riders. With so few National Series events, here’s hoping teams and riders support races such as this.

Team entries will be given priority but there should be plenty of space for individual entries too. Team sizes are limited to a maximum of 4 riders. Two reserve riders can be submitted for each team, team substitutions can be made up until Friday the 10th of March 11:55pm. Entries close Saturday 4th of March 11:55pm. In the event that not all places are fulfilled, we will start to accept team reserve riders and increase team sizes. Only road bikes are permitted in the time trial stages.

With a cycling guide to the Cotswolds and a guide to outdoor photography (the latter with Jon Sparks - himself author of the Cicerone guide to the Lancashire Cycle Way), you’d expect a guide that offers a lot - even to a cyclist, such as I, who thinks they know the Peak District. I haven’t been disappointed and I doubt if you will be either. This is a guide that not only offers great routes into places off the beaten track, but gives fascinating insights along the way.

The routes utilise lanes and track wherever possible - short sections of main road are inevitable, (there is even a warning about a short section on route nineteen) - including elements of the famous, and growing, network of former railway tracks. The author offers a very good grading system for each ride - though all are aimed at riders of moderate fitness or better. Equally, it is well-worth reading the detail of each route and the initial general advice on “what bike” before setting off. Road bike alternatives are shown on the maps and described in the text. There are elements of easy technical mountain-biking on some routes, whist others can be completed on a performance road bike. A tourer would be ideal for most, but, remember descents can be as tough as ascents. In the photographs, you’ll see a variety of machines. Don’t worry too much, just read the guide and decide what suits you best. A bit of a walk is not always such a bad thing for the leisure or touring cyclist! By the way, the advice on crossing the ford at Bradbourne is excellent. Narrow road tyres are best kept for the bridge, in my opinion - so speaks the voice of experience!

Although we now associate the Peak District with beautiful scenery and tourists, the routes take you away from the crowds and into the nooks and corners rarely seen by the hordes. With routes ranging from 8 miles to the full tour - and a variety of options, this guide will take you somewhere new - even if you have climbed many Peak District hills already.

Steve, Seven Day Cyclist

Chiz Dakin Cicerone author DAKIN

By Chiz Dakin

Chiz Dakin’s cycle touring adventures almost happened by accident, when after a local photography trip by bike she realised that she’d done 50 miles in a single day with a reasonably heavy load. This led to the disconnected logic that if she could do that once, she was now ready to tackle multi-day cycle touring, and two weeks later set out on the Land’s End to John o’ Groats route. Since then she’s done several other multi-day trips including a pioneering Welsh coast cycle route (600 miles and 16km of ascent) but still maintains that you don’t need to be seriously fit or fast to enjoy long multi-day routes. (She certainly makes no claim to being either!) She has also recently won an award for her photography.

A Beginner’s Guide to Sportive Riding

What to expect in a velo29 sportive.

This classic sportive, named after and on the same route as the original Tour of the Peak road race, which ran from 1943 through to 2005. Follow in the wheel tracks of some of the top original British bike racers that have graced these roads, Malcolm Elliot, Mark Lovatt, John Tanner, Chris Lillywhite and Matt Stephens to name just a few.

Have you got what it takes to attempt this challenging ride? The long route is probably one of the toughest challenges that can be done at 115 Miles and over 10,000ft of climbing, it certainly isn’t to be underestimated! A little more tame but still with the killer mile of Winnats Pass, the medium route is 62 miles but still manages to squeeze in over 5000ft of climbing, a great starting point, if you are looking for a challenge and the long route, is just too much!

Both routes start from Bakewell Showground, giving you beautiful surroundings to start and finish your day, if you get chance, call in and pick up a Bakewell Pudding, not to be missed! We certainly did when we last visited.

A gentle spin to start you off before hitting the first ascent of the day just after Ashford will give you a taste of what’s to come, hills, hills and more hills! Both routes are fairly relentless giving you most of the top climbs in the Peak District! Winnats Pass sneaks up on you after the beautiful village of Castleton, a tough Killer Mile Challenge awaits on a fully closed road.

The medium route splits from the long route at the top of Winnats Pass if it’s been too much so far, the choice is yours, cut out 55 miles and the Holme Moss Climb? Make your choice wisely! Even on the medium route you still have the Cat and Fiddle to look forward to after the routes rejoin before heading back to Bakewell.

The long ride, the ride of heroes, can you manage three major climbs in one day, Winnats Pass, Holme Moss and the Cat and Fiddle? Only the brave should choose this route, it’s certainly not for the faint-hearted.

Back at Bakewell, we will have a variety of food, hot drinks and beer for those needing a stiff drink after possibly the most challenging ride around.
