Mountain bike suspension forks explained – we break down every technical term and piece of jargon to help you better understand your MTB fork

Our easy to understand, A to Z expert guide on what all the bits of your MTB suspension fork are called and what they do

Bottomless tokens, bottom out bumper, bottom race, brake mount, brake spacer, breakaway force, coil spring, compression, crown offset, damper shaft, damping dials, lock out lever, negative spring, positive spring, pressure release valves, progression, remote lockout spool, rebound adjusters, set up chart, shaft bolts, spring shaft, spring rate, star fangled nut, top out bumper, transfer port, travel adjust, travel ring, volume spacers, wtf manitou.

Mountain bike suspension has a whole language of its own, and some of it seems to make no sense at all. Learn how to talk fork with our experts though and you’ll know what everything in your front suspension is called and what it does. We’ve also included the common descriptors of fork performance and problems, complete with advice on how to adjust your fork so it rides perfectly for you.

You can navigate your way through the terms using the side navigation, we've also linked the explanations where relevant, so click on the hyperlinks for further info.

For more on forks, see our best mountain bike forks guide and A to Z of MTB suspension .

Spring formed by a sealed air chamber. Lighter than a coil spring and can be easily adjusted by altering the air pressure. Will naturally ramp up in resistance deeper in the stroke though and can theoretically change spring rate if it gets really hot when working hard. If you want a basic idea how it works, stick your finger over the end of a pump and try and press it down.

The arch that joins the two lower legs together. Normally on the front of the fork, but Manitou arches have always been at the back (see the ‘ WTF Manitou ’ section later) and Fox copied that layout on their latest AI-designed superlight XC fork.

The overall length of the fork from the axle to where it connects to the bike. Not all forks of the same travel have the same axle to crown, so check the measurement if swapping forks in case it upsets your geometry. If you can get a bit more travel in for the same length, that’s a win though.

Damper that uses a stretchy rubber bag (the bladder) to let the oil contract and expand as it flows through the system. Simple and effective but can split.

The RockShox name for volume spacers . AKA, internally fitted plastic cylinders that are used to adjust how progressive the spring rate of your fork is.

Josh Bryceland bottoms out his suspension at Red Bull Hardline 2024

The behavior of the fork as it reaches full travel. On crude forks the fork can literally slam metal on metal at full stroke. Most forks now use at least a rubber bottom out bumper to soften the blow. You can reduce the likelihood of bottoming out by increasing the air spring pressure or adding more high speed compression damping.

Rubber lump or coil spring that stops metal on metal contact at when your fork bottoms out – aka runs out of travel. See bottom out above for more.

Not really part of the fork but as it’s hammered onto the steerer, we’ve included it here. The bottom race sits below the lower headset bearing so it can turn smoothly on. Make sure it’s there, clean and straight when you put your bike together or you won’t be steering well.

Close up of the brake mount on a fork

All forks worth having now use ‘post mount’ brakes with two bolted stubs sticking backwards out of the bottom of the left fork leg. Some big forks will only work with 180mm or bigger discs. Some lightweight XC forks are only safe with 180mm or smaller discs.

Wiggly bar or little cylinder spacers that let you run a bigger rotor than the basic post mount position.

The amount of load needed to overcome stiction and start the fork moving in its travel.

Smooth rings (generally synthetic but sometimes steel on cheaper forks) in the lower legs that the stanchions slide through as the fork does its thing. Bushings that are too loose will make the fork wobble and potentially jam under braking or cornering. Bushing that are too tight will make the fork feel really sticky and stubborn.

Close up of the lowers on a RockShox Lyrik fork

This is RockShox' name for small elastomer pucks at the bottom of the damper and spring shafts where they join the lower legs. The idea is that they reduce vibration and make the fork more comfortable and less tiring to ride.

Damper that’s self-contained in a sealed cartridge to stop air getting in and giving it indigestion. More complicated than a bladder but generally longer lived.

Sudden loss of damper control generally because the suspension is moving too quickly for the oil flow and it forms a vacuum behind the piston. It can also happen if air has got into the damping oil through a leak in the bladder or cartridge.

A steel (or very occasionally titanium) spring in your fork that gives it bounce. Generally gives a smoother, more linear feel than an air spring . Heavier than air though and resistance can’t be tuned (apart from preload adjustment), so you’ll need to swap to a lighter or heavier spring if the stock one doesn’t suit you.

The shortening of the suspension fork as it absorbs a load.

The bridge between the steerer and the stanchions . Trail and XC forks only have one, but DH forks have two – one above the head tube and one below – for extra stiffness. Crowns are generally trouble-free, but if there’s any creaking coming from your fork, it’s probably from here. Some brands occasionally try carbon crowns for their fanciest XC race forks but they generally go back to alloy as it’s way less hassle to work with and barely any heavier.

The forward offset between the alignment of the stanchions and the steerer. This affects steering feel by changing the amount of ‘trail’ of the fork. I won't get into a trail explanation (we have another feature on MTB geometry for that), though even I have to double-check what it means and I’ve been writing about this stuff for over a quarter of a century. All you really need to know is that shorter 42mm offset forks are now all the rage, though some bikes still use 51mm.

The actual physical damping system which pushes valved/shimmed/both piston/pistons through oil as the fork moves. This converts the movement energy into heat keeping the fork calm and controlled.

Controls the compression and rebound speed of the fork so it doesn’t just bounce up and down wildly.

The rod that holds the fork together on the damper side and has all the valves, shims and pistons of the damper (or the damping cartridge) on it.

The Charger 3.1 damper controls on the 2025 RockShox Lyrik MTB fork

Little clicky dials, with lines and + or – signs on. Generally, blue and black ones are for changing the compression damping, while red ones take care of the rebound. If you’re reading set-up instructions ‘three clicks from closed’ means turn the dial three notches from fully shut.

Excessive compression for a given load, particularly in relation to braking loads. You can reduce dive by increasing pressure in the air spring or adding more low speed compression damping.

The ends of the fork legs that hold the front wheel in place. Most forks now use a ‘ thru axle ’ that slides into completely closed bore, but some cheaper forks still use an open slotted dropout for a QR skewer and hub. Fox complicate matters with a floating insert that you clamp into place after aligning the wheel and fork by squishing it up and down a few times. The idea is that it stops the forks being pulled inwards and out of alignment when you do up the axle, but TBH it’s hard to tell if it makes any difference.

Length of rubbery polyurethane used instead of an air spring or coil spring in early suspension fork models, or cheap ones later. It gets harder in winter and squishier in summer and feels like you’re choking on a sock compared to a proper spring. OK if just used as a top or bottom out bumper though.

Resistance to movement (drag) anywhere in the stroke that slows the fork movement down. Generally caused by seals and bushings.

The first important thing to understand is this has nothing to do with the speed you’re riding at. High speed compression is a load that arrives suddenly, compressing the fork very quickly. Think landing a drop or riding into a blunt object or like a dog running into your leg. High speed rebound is the sudden re-extension of the fork after a maximal load. Also see low speed .

Stands for High Speed Compression. You'll usually see it stamped on fork-top damping dials . See high speed above for more.

Internal Floating Pistons hang about behind the main damper piston in cartridge dampers. They stop the oil that’s gone through the damping piston mixing with air and getting bubbly and inconsistent. The spring behind the IFP also adds a degree of bottom out control and helps to push the oil back through the valve. Not all forks have them as they add complexity and cost, but most decent cartridge forks (and shocks) do.

Again this has nothing to do with the speed you’re riding at. Low speed compression is a load that arrives comparatively slowly, compressing the fork gradually. Think pushing the bike hard into a turn, or the suspension compressing as you brake. Low speed rebound is the gradual re-extension of the fork after a smaller load. Also see high speed .

Low Speed Compression. Like HSC (high speed compression), you'll find LSC stamped on the damping dials of higher end forks. See low speed above for more.

A fork that has a very consistent spring rate through its stroke and is therefore more likely to use more travel. This suits less aggressive uses like long distance or technical trail riding, where comfort and traction are key.

A compression lever that goes all the way to a full lockout of the fork to stop it moving.

The lower legs on a Marzocchi Bomber Z1 fork

The bottom part of the fork, normally made from cast magnesium for minimum weight, though you’ll occasionally see some carbon wrapped ones.

Spring that opposes the positive spring and helps the fork start moving.

Simple damper without a bladder or cartridge so the oil sloshes about all over the place inside the fork, lubricating it as well as calming it down. Famously used in early Marzocchi Bomber forks that were super fluid and reliable when everything else was uptight and exploded every few weeks. They get inconsistent when the oil mixes with the air though and they sound like an otter orgy.

Adding load to the spring to increase the force needed to start the fork compressing. A bit like increasing the spring rate at the start but in a really crude way. You’ll sometimes still find a ‘preload dial’ on old and/or cheap forks.

The main spring that supports your weight and re–extends your fork after a compression .

Fancy forks have release valves on the back of the lower legs so you can fart out air pressure that’s built up in the wrong part of the fork on long descents.

See ramp up .

The QR (quick release) skewer is an ancient design invented by Tullio Campagnolo in 1926. They use a spindly steel rod with a cam closure on one end and a threaded bolt on the other. They loosen to slide in and out of open dropouts so they’re faster to fit and remove. They’re nowhere near as secure or stiff as a connection as a thru axle though, so you’ll only find them on older or cheaper bikes.

Cable clamp ‘winch’ that takes the place of a manual lever to turn the low speed compression damper to the locked position on forks with a handlebar remote control. This makes the fork less sensitive which can be useful as it gives more support when climbing, sprinting, etc.

The rebound adjuster at the bottom of a suspension fork leg

Rebound adjusters are often at the bottom end of the fork. Fox hide them under a threaded cover on its forks, while RockShox hides its adjusters up inside the fork leg on their lightweight designs. SID XC race forks use a removable Allen wrench that can also be used to adjust the rebound on the SID rear shock and then left in the pits while you’re racing to minimize weight.

The extension of the fork as the spring pushes it back after absorbing a load.

Increase in spring rate as an air fork compresses towards the end of its stroke. The more ramp up a fork has, the harder it is to get full travel. This suits high impact uses like enduro and DH racing or bike park / jump riding.

Close up of a suspension fork upper showing the markers for setting sag

The amount the fork compresses when you get on the bike. General advice is to set the fork up so it sags by 20 percent of its travel and then tweak from there as you get more time on it. If using air suspension (most forks do), you'll need a shock pump to set up your sag.

The bulge just below the crown where the inner bushings and sometimes extra seals sit.

The rubber ringpieces that stop dirt getting into your fork’s internals. Thankfully most fork seals are pretty sorted now, but worth cleaning regularly and servicing if they’re looking scuffed or split.

Close up of a MTB fork stanchion showing the setup sticker

Recommended air pressure figures on a sticker that's usually in a really awkward to read place on the fork that will help with initial setup. I always find RockShox and Fox pressures are about 20 percent too soft for me though.

The bolts at the bottom of the fork that hold the uppers and lowers together. They also stop the lubricating oil pouring out, so if you undo them, have something ready to catch the oil.

A stack of sprung washers with a slight gap between them (like a Lego Christmas tree) that control oil flow. As the fork compresses the oil is pushed against the shims. The larger the compression force, the more the shims flex back, pressing against the shims behind them and therefore stiffening up the resistance to the oil flow. Changing the size, stiffness or number of shims in the stack changes the damping range.

This is the oil that flows back and forth through the damping circuits. It’s designed to handle very high heat loads without changing viscosity so that the fork performance stays consistent on long descents. Shock oil also comes in different ‘weights’ (viscosities) so that you can make the damper faster or slower flowing without altering the physical circuitry.

A small, high pressure pump designed for adding air to air sprung forks and shocks. An essential tool if you are running air suspension on your bike.

Sudden, jarring resistance to compression. Can be caused by too much high speed compression damping or by binding across loose bushings.

RockShox Pike Ultimate MTB fork top cap detail

The cap that screws into the fork top on the spring side. Can be hollowed out on some forks to increase negative spring volume. Volume spacers generally screw into the underside too. They can also have a preload adjuster on coil or elastomer sprung forks. Always depressurize the air spring before unscrewing the top cap though or it’ll take your face off.

The rod that holds the fork together on the spring side and has the air piston for the air spring or the coil base for the coil spring on it.

The amount of weight / pressure needed to compress a coil spring one inch (25mm). Heavier, more aggressive riders will need a heavier spring weight and vice versa.

The upper tubes that the lower legs slide up and down on. The skinniest forks use 28mm diameter tubes while the biggest are 40mm. Most are in the 32mm (XC) to 38mm (enduro) range though as that’s a good compromise between stiffness, strength and weight.

Fox go fancy with gold Kashima coatings on their Factory forks, but most alloy forks use black. If the legs look chromed they’re probably cheap, steel and very heavy. Whatever they’re made of, look out for scratches and wear marks as they can affect consistent performance by damaging seals or letting oil leak out.

The little steel sphincter-looking thing that you hammer into the steerer so the headset tightening bolt has something to screw into. Make sure you use a proper fitting tool though as trying to fit it freehand with a hammer is asking for a world of ‘it’s slipped sideways’ pain.

Close up of a MTB frame head tube

The steerer is the tube that sticks into your frame. Really cheap bikes have skinny straight 1.125-inch steerers, but most bikes use a tapered 1.5 – 1.125-in setup for extra stiffness with little extra weight. There are a few e-MTBs using even bigger 1.8in steerers but they’ve not really caught on yet. Some brands occasionally try carbon steerers for their fanciest XC race forks but they generally go back to alloy as it’s way less hassle to work with and barely any heavier.

A cut out on the inside of the lower legs of Fox ‘Step Cast’ XC race forks lets them use a narrower stance – and therefore narrower, lighter crown and arch – without catching the brake rotor.

Friction at the start of the stroke that stops the initial movement of the fork. The effect of this can be reduced by the negative spring.

The telescopic movement of the suspension through it’s travel.

Close up of the thu axle system on a Fox 34 fork

Hollow axle for the front hub in either 15mm (XC, trail, enduro forks) or 20mm (DH, bike park forks) diameter. Most designs simply screw into the fork and come in simple bolted or cam axle formats. Suntour’s Q-Loc uses an expanding rose joint to secure the axle whichever side you slide it in. This is really clever until it gets dirty and then it’s not clever at all. Not sure why anybody shortened through axle to thru axle, but it’s kind of stuck and I hope they got the ‘o’ and ‘g’ keys fixed on their keyboard eventually.

The behavior of the fork as it reaches full extension. It’s rarely an issue on more expensive forks but some cheap forks can give a real clunk or clang if they rebound as you launch a jump or pull the front of the bike up in a wheelie or manual. Unfortunately, they’re unlikely to have the rebound damping adjustment to solve it.

Rubber lump or coil spring that stops metal on metal contact at top out (see above).

Small blip on the side of the air spring that farts air from the positive to the negative spring as the piston passes it, automatically balancing the pressures. Not all forks have them but if they do, then you need to compress the fork past the transfer port regularly when setting them up. Otherwise, they’ll feel super stiff to start and then too soft when you hit the first bump and everything equalizes.

The maximum vertical movement of the fork. Longer travel means your fork can eat up bigger hits without barfing control or breaking your wrists, but that also means more weight. That’s why downhill forks run 200-220mm of travel, but lightweight cross-country forks run 100-120mm.

The ability to change the travel of the fork. Externally adjustable travel (normally with a windy knob) used to be a common feature on forks, but now adjustment normally involves internal fettling. Sometimes simple, sometimes needing a whole new spring shaft. Check the manual to check the misery level involved before you start plotting.

Rubber ‘O’ ring on the stanchion that gets pushed up towards the crown as the fork moves, letting you know how much travel you’ve used.

The piston head on the damper shaft the damping oil flows through. Flow rates can be changed by altering the size of the holes (orifices if you’re being fancy) the oil travels through as the piston is pushed through the oil.

The capacity of a damper chamber or air spring. The larger the volume of the air spring, the more linear the fork is likely to feel. The smaller the volume the more progressive it will feel.

Plastic cylinders that take up space in the air spring. By reducing the volume of the spring it becomes more progressive, so the fork uses less stroke for a given impact force. So if your fork is feeling good but bottoming out too easily add more spacers. If it’s not using all it’s travel at least once per ride then check how many spacers are already installed and take them out.

A gloved hand holding Bottomless Tokens for a RockShox Lyrik MTB fork

Manitou was one of the original MTB suspension brands, releasing their first fork in 1990 and they’ve done things differently ever since. This includes coloring their compression dampers red and their rebound dials blue and using reverse arches for most of their history. They also stuck doggedly to post mount brake fixtures for decades while everyone else went to ‘International Standard’ mounts. Everyone is back on post mount though so they won that one in the end.

FOX 38 Factory Suspension Fork, 50th Anniversary - 29

FOX's Limited Edition 50th Anniversary Podium Gold Fork FOX has made a little over 7,000 of these limited edition forks for the 32, 34, 36 , 38 , & 40! Each Fork will be numbered along with a special note from Mr. FOX himself to celebrate the continued rider support FOX has received over the years! Once they're gone, they're gone forever!! GRIP X2 is the winning difference. As mountain bike riding and racing has evolved, so too have the need of athletes pushing the potential of what is possible on a mountain bike. Drawing on 50 years of suspension innovation, in 2024 FOX is launching three new dampers—each engineered from the ground up—that represent the pinnacle of suspension performance; the Grip X2 for ultimate descending performance, The Grip X for uncompromised all-mountain traction, and the Grip SL, the lightest XC damper with unparalleled ride feel. To create the ultimate descent-focused damper, we sought the level of tunability seen in motocross and supercross racing suspension. Our award-winning Grip 2 damper had a 20mm base valve diameter and seven valves. Grip X2 scaled up the tunability by increasing the base valve diameter to 24mm with 23 valves. The result is the most tunable, supportive, and smoothest descent-focused fork damper ever created by FOX. Riders reap the benefits of sitting higher in the travel while tires stay glued to the ground. They can corner with increased traction, giving them the confidence to push the limits of downhill and enduro racing, all while reducing overall rider fatigue. The 38 Factory Series is the choice for riders who want an all-round fork that performs in a vast range of applications: lightweight for climbs and highly capable for demanding terrain with enough travel to instill confidence when the trail gets rough. Weight savings are attributed to external lower casting steps, hollow lower section, and shortened shaft lengths. How much suspension travel do I need on my mountain bike?

From cross-country to downhill, we take you through how much travel you can expect on the major types of mountain bike

Andy Lloyd / Our Media

Mountain bikes feature different amounts of suspension travel depending on the type of riding they're designed for.

Suspension travel describes the amount of movement a suspension fork or rear shock has. It is usually a measurement of how far the wheel axle moves in a vertical or near-vertical plane as the suspension compresses.

Depending on the discipline of riding the bike is designed for, the suspension travel can vary from 80 to 200mm. While more travel may seem better, helping you soak up lumps and bumps, it can be a hindrance if your riding includes lots of climbing or you benefit from a light, responsive bike.

This means deciding on the right amount of travel for your needs can be difficult, but there are a few factors to keep in mind, including your riding style and the type of trails and terrain you'll be tackling.

Bike manufacturers design their mountain bikes around different travel lengths, tailored to specific terrains or riding disciplines, and categorise the bikes accordingly. As a result, looking at the different categories of mountain bikes, their intended application and travel length is a handy way to determine how much travel you need and what bike you should get.

In this guide, we’ll explain the different mountain bike categories and how much suspension travel they typically have.

Cross-country mountain bikes

The best cross-country mountain bikes are designed to compete in high-level, fast races, where lightness and pedalling efficiency are often the keys to success.

Typically, cross-country bikes have featured 80 to 100mm of travel. Because cross-country race courses have become more extreme and technical, it is now common to see bikes designed around 120mm travel front and rear, such as Scott’s Spark RC .

Using less suspension travel than other mountain bikes means cross-country bikes can be built with a lighter frame construction because less reinforcement is needed to deal with the lower frame articulation. This helps riders race up the kinds of inclines that characterise XC races .

The short-travel forks used on cross-country bikes also help to keep weight down because they utilise a lighter chassis and narrower stanchions, usually 30 to 32mm in diameter.

Stanchions are the part of the fork connected to the crown and remain rigid to the bike while the lowers move up and down over them.

The trade-off for this weight saving comes in the form of fork flex, which impacts the directness of steering inputs and the overall ability of the fork to perform in gnarlier terrain as friction levels build on the seals.

A short-travel fork will also run out of travel quicker compared to one with more travel. Although setup and damper performance will dictate a lot of factors in how proficiently it absorbs bumps, less travel means it won't absorb bigger bumps as well as a long-travel fork.

Hardtail mountain bikes are also well-represented in cross-country, because rigid frames allow for the highest pedalling efficiency. However, the traction and descending ability of full-suspension bikes make them desirable to many riders.

Downcountry mountain bikes

Rider jumping the Yeti SB120

Downcountry bikes aim to balance a cross-country bike's efficiency with a trail bike's downhill capability.

‘Downcountry’ is a relatively new mountain bike discipline and isn’t that well defined as a result. But in terms of suspension, these bikes range from beefed up cross-country at 110mm of travel, to lightweight trail with around 130mm front and rear travel.

Having slightly more travel than an outright cross-country bike means downcountry bikes are more capable on descents. However, with shorter travel than trail bikes, they still offer greater pedalling efficiency than burlier bikes.

Downcountry bike frames can be made lighter than trail bikes because the demand on the frame is less. This means they require less material in their construction because they don’t require the same amount of strength as a trail or enduro bike needs.

Downcountry bikes usually feature stronger, stiffer forks, with thicker stanchions, usually 34mm in diameter. This gives higher levels of rigidity to the fork, making steering inputs more direct, although concessions are still made to weight savings.

Trail mountain bikes

Cyclist in red top riding the Canyon Spectral 125 CF 7 full suspension mountain bike

Trail bikes are one of the most popular types of mountain bike. They are designed to straddle the line between enduro bikes and cross-country bikes, providing a ride that’s fun but capable.

Confident on descents and fairly capable on climbs, trail bikes typically have between 120 and 160mm of suspension travel.

Trail bikes at the longer end of the suspension-travel spectrum cross the boundary into all-mountain. Typically, these bikes will feature beefier frame construction to deal with the added suspension travel.

The optimum amount of travel depends on what terrain or trails you like to ride, and where you’d like to progress with your riding. 140mm is ideal for even the toughest trail centres, with more travel being required for gnarlier ambitions.

Forks with mid-sized stanchions, either 34mm, 35mm or 36mm in diameter, are common on trail bikes. These shift the balance away from lightness toward rigid stability for better handling while descending. Less flexibility in the fork will mean more direct steering input, making the bike feel more planted through the rough stuff.

Enduro mountain bikes

YT Capra Mk III Core 2 enduro mountain bike-21

Enduro bikes are designed to meet the demands of enduro racing , which consists of multiple downhill stages that riders have to reach within a set time limit. As a result, enduro bikes have to perform well on technical descents while providing a decent pedalling platform to get you to the top of the trail in good time.

Travel for enduro bikes starts at 150mm and ranges up to 180mm. There is a 190mm-travel version of RockShox’s enduro-focused ZEB fork, but you’re more likely to see this attached to a freeride or bike park bike.

Enduro bikes require a burly frame construction in order to cope with the demands of downhill trails.

Head tubes have to be stronger to deal with the extra force coming from the long-travel fork, while the rear linkage has to be able to support the extra articulation.

This added frame construction makes the frame heavier, impacting efficiency when going uphill, but the pay-off is worth it when coming back down.

Forks within this travel range prioritise rigidity over weight savings, with thicker stanchions of 36mm to 38mm, providing direct steering inputs and a solid feel as you ride over gnarly terrain.

Downhill mountain bikes

male cyclist riding orange full suspension mountain bike in woods

Downhill bikes are designed for, you guessed it, riding downhill. The discipline doesn’t require the bike to be pedalled on uphill or even flat terrain, enabling designers to focus solely on providing the best platform for descending steep and technical trails.

These bikes feature some of the longest suspension travel, ranging from 180 to 200mm, helping to protect riders from large, repeated impacts.

Frames have to be built to the highest strength levels to cope with the impacts you experience on downhill trails. Although downhill frames are heavier than those intended for other disciplines, it's less important to have light frames because you’re not pedalling them uphill.

Downhill forks feature the thickest stanchion, ranging from 35 to 40mm in diameter, because they deal with the most extreme terrain and require the greatest rigidity.

Weight isn’t a big issue for downhill bikes, so the added heft is worth the trade-off for the performance gains.

The forks on downhill bikes have a dual-crown design, meaning the fork mounts above and below the head tube, as opposed to single-crown forks, which mount only from below. This adds more torsional stiffness to the fork, helping to keep steering inputs direct through the toughest terrain and providing strength for big impacts.

Electric mountain bikes

Male cyclist in blue top riding the Nukeproof Megawatt 297 Factory full suspension eMTB

Electric mountain bikes are heavy, even compared to downhill bikes. The added weight a battery and motor bring means frames as well as components have to be engineered to cope with the extra weight – and contribute even more weight to the bike in the process.

Electric bikes can be categorised by the other disciplines featured in this article and will tend to feature the travel of that discipline.

The best electric mountain bikes will feature e-MTB specific forks and shocks, some with thicker stanchions for rigidity, and custom tunes that are suited to the heavier weight of the bike.

Because you’ll have a motor, there won’t be a trade-off in having a bike with more travel (and therefore weight), with the bike taking up the burden on the hills.

What about hardtail mountain bikes?

Male cyclist in black top riding a Radon Cragger 8.0 hardtail mountain bike over rough terrain

Hardtail mountain bikes have a suspension fork and a rigid rear end. They can be seen in a variety of disciplines, though are mainly represented in the cross-country and trail disciplines. They are also popular when it comes to budget mountain bikes because the simplicity of their design and less suspension means less cost.

As with other types of mountain bikes, fork travel is usually dependent on discipline. Cross-country hardtails typically have 100mm of travel, but more aggressive hardtails can have suspension travel of up to 150mm.

Some manufacturers will design frames with flex points in the rear triangle, allowing for vertical compliance in the frame. This improves comfort when sat in the saddle, and to a smaller extent rear-wheel traction while climbing.

Best MTB forks (Double Crown and Single Crown): Your Guide to Superior Suspension

When talking about mountain bike forks, there are two main groups that forks can fall into: single and double crown forks. Double crown forks attach both above and below the head tube, hence the name double crown.

Single crowns mount only below the headtube, meaning that they can be made far lighter, are more manoeuvrable but are less stiff. In general, double crown forks are limited to downhill bikes due to their weight and subsequent difficulty to manoeuvre and pedal. Single crown forks have a much wider application, across disciplines from cross-country to enduro with varying sizes for each purpose.

For this article, by ‘best’ I’ll look at travel, thickness of the stanchions and price of most major brands’ top-of-the-range forks.

Double Crown Fork

Rockshox fork boxxer ultimate charger2.1 rc2 – 27.5″ boost 20×110 200mm red, 36 offset debonair (ziptie fender, 2 btm tokens, star nut & maxle stealth) c2.

200mm travel forks

First up is the RockShox BoXXer, coming in at $1699. The BoXXer is RockShox’ largest and most rugged fork. It accommodates both 27.5 and 29 inch wheels and comes with 180, 190 or 200 millimetres of vertical travel.

The stanchions have a 35mm diameter, which isn’t as large as those on some competitors’ models. It has external adjustment for both high and low speed compression and uses a token system to manage ramp-up. It weighs just over two and a half kilos on the 27.5”, 200mm model.

The RockShox Maxima Plush fluid claims to silence annoying damper noise, and the new Charger 2.1 damper claims to “reduce hand fatigue and fight unwanted friction”.

MRP Bartlett Dual Crown Air Fork (Black) (27.5″) (15 x 110mm) (49mm Offset) (180mm)

200mm travel forks

Next is the MRP Bartlett fork, coming in at $1212.99. The Bartlett can accommodate a 27.5 or 29 inch wheel just like the BoXXer, but is only available at 170, 180 and 190 millimetre travel. Subsequently, it weighs ~100g less than the BoXXer, at just under two and a half kilos in the 27.5”, 190mm configuration.

The stanchions are 35mm however only low speed compression can be adjusted externally. Ramp up is controlled externally however, not with tokens that have to be added inside the fork.

The MRP Bartlett can accommodate a 180 millimetre brake rotor and comes with all of the parts required to reduce or increase the travel, as the fork is designed not only for downhill but instead using the “dual-crown design [to] provide space efficiency over a single-crown” which they claim allows for a longer travel despite having a shorter axle to crown length than a single crown fork.

Fox 40 Float Factory GRIP2 2021 Fork

200mm travel forks

Next is the FOX 40 Float fork. Fox’ largest fork comes in at nearly £1900, which is over $2600 dollars. The fork boasts 203mm of travel and 40mm stanchions. The fork also weighs around 2.8 kilograms, which is far heavier than the prior two forks.

High and low speed compression can be adjusted externally as well as both high and low speed rebound, which is a feature often grouped into one on other manufacturers’ forks.

The fox fork is far heavier than other brands, but is larger than other forks, whilst sporting the ability to fit a massive 230 millimetre brake rotor where others may fall shorter of that.

Emerald – DVO Suspension

200mm travel forks

Next is the DVO suspension Emerald inverted double crown fork. The DVO uses an uncommon approach by placing the station at the bottom of the fork, rather than having it at the top like other manufacturers. The fork boasts 203mm just like the FOX 40 but has 36mm stanchions, larger than the BoXXer but smaller than the Fox 40.

The DVO Emerald also has a unique tuning system, where the negative spring can be preloaded to provide ramp up separately from the air pressure in the fork. For example, a light rider can run low pressure but reduce the ‘OTT’ (off the top) adjustment to keep the fork from sagging or reduce it to have a more linear travel. The DVO is also listed as costing ~$1500 – $2250, however I have found it to cost £1040 ($1450)

Overall, there are two major competitors in double crown fork production: RockShox with the BoXXer and Fox with the 40 Float. Both are top of the range, high performance forks, with the Fox 40 taking home the first UCI world cup women’s race with Camille Balanche at Leogang this year, and the BoXXer taking home the men’s race with Troy Brosnan. Overall, I would personally be inclined to buy the RockShox BoXXer due to its weight savings and cost savings, being almost $1000 less than the Fox 40 whilst evidently still being a very competitive fork.

Single Crown Fork

Fox racing 38 float performance elite fork – 27.5.

200mm travel forks

The First fork is the Fox 38 float, with its main draw being its massive 38mm stanchions, much larger than most double crown downhill forks. These wide stanchions give it a very stiff feel and give it a beefy look.

The 170mm travel makes it perfect for rough trails whilst not being cumbersome like a longer alternative or a double crown fork. It weighs just under 2200 grams and can accommodate huge 3 inch tyres and 230mm rotors.

The fox 38 has a lot of external adjustment, with high and low speed compression and high and low speed rebound too. This gives the rider greater control over the fork to give the perfect feel.

The fork is very smooth, aided by the floating axles and that aforementioned stiffness holding the fork straight through its travel. The fork is available on evo.com for $1,149, the most expensive fork on the site.

RockShox ZEB Ultimate Charger 2.1 RC2 Fork – 27.5″

200mm travel forks

The second fork is the Fox 38s direct competitor, released in response to Fox’s new fork: the RockShox ZEB ultimate. The fork is available from 160 – 190mm in 10mm increments. The forks also have an e-bike specific model called just the ZEB.

It uses 38mm stanchions just like the Fox, giving it amazing stiffness. It is over 20% stiffer than their other flagship fork, the Lyrik. It has additional negative air volume, which makes it resemble a downhill fork in it’s feel. It comes in both 27.5 and 29 inch sizes and is available for $999, $150 less than Fox’s counterpart.

You can adjust high and low speed compression, however rebound is concentrated to one adjustment. The fork accepts tokens to adjust ramp up (when the fork stiffens throughout its travel.) The fork weighs almost 2300 grams, so 100g more than the fox 38. It can accept 3.2” tyres, and a year more warranty than the Fox 38.

Marzocchi Bomber Z1 Coil Fork – 27.5″

200mm travel forks

Next up is the Marzocchi Bomber Z1 Coil fork. The Marzocchi Bomber shares some of the main chassis with the fox 36, so has stanchions 2mm thinner than the 38 and the ZEB. It boasts a Fox Grip damper but with is coil sprung instead.

If you want a coil spring, this is one of the highest end options. The coil system is suited best for high travel forks as it provides a perfectly smooth travel throughout it’s entire travel. The disadvantage of a coil fork is that the spring must be replaced to truly tune it to the rider’s weight unlike an air fork that you can just pump up or reduce the pressure in.

Using internal spacers, the fork travel can be changed by the rider. As far as external adjustment, you can adjust preload, rebound and it has air assist to control ramp up and to help the fork to stop bottoming out.

The fork is very heavy compared to the other two so far, coming in at over two and a half kilos actually weighing more than the MRP Bartlett, a double crown fork. Coil forks do tend to weigh more, but for those who like the specific feel, the Marzocchi is arguably the highest end option. Coil forks in general are cheaper due to their simplicity and the Marzocchi is no exception, coming in at $779.99 on Evo.com

MRP Ribbon Suspension Fork 27.5 160mm 110×15

200mm travel forks

The MRP Ribbon is a 160mm fork, with its main selling point being its incredible adjustability. MRP actually developed their ramp up control cartridge back in 2017, and the Ribbon has this same control.

The Ribbon also has both positive and negative air chambers, giving great control over the fork’s performance. It has a pressure relief valve, which keeps the fork performing the same at high altitude and when being ridden especially aggressively.

The fork can only accept 2.3 inch tyres, which is smaller than the other forks, with 27.5” wheel size where the others could accommodate 29” too. The MRP Ribbon also uses their distinctive arch design which may at first look back-to-front, but actually is designed that way so as not to collect mud off the front wheel which can collect making annoying noises whilst adding unnecessary weight to the fork.

In the single crown category , I would personally prefer the RockShox ZEB as it has the advantages of a long travel, 38mm stanchion single crown fork, but for $150 less than Fox’ alternative fork.

Although I think that Fox or Marzocchi have better styling than RockShox and will turn more heads, the value for money on the RockShox ZEB is undeniably better than the Fox 38. It also has more travel by 10mm and at 190mm in a single crown configuration, it definitely is unique.

Overall, if we’re talking in pure downhill performance, I think that the disparity in performance between the FOX 40 and the RockShox BoXXer is so minute that either could be considered the ultimate in downhill racing, but for the average consumer, I think that the BoXXer is just more appealing from the view that it costs almost $1000 less than the Fox 40. Both have been shown to be able to perform incredibly, both taking wins regularly at the world cup downhill.

As far as overall performance, with climbing and downhill in mind, again the Fox 40 and RockShox ZEB are too close to call. The prices are broadly comparable, with the ZEB being cheaper, separated by only a 15% price difference and the ZEB also being slightly longer but at the cost a 5% difference in weight (with the Fox 40 being lighter).

Follow on facebook:, tractive offering x-treme pro ‘long-travel’ suspension for tenere 700, a top-of-the-line suspension kit for those that want next-level off-road performance..

200mm travel forks

Since its release in 2019 in Europe and the arrival in the US in 2021, there’s no question the Yamaha Tenere 700 has become one of the most popular and sought out adventure bikes on the market. With its rally-inspired design, it hits a sweet spot in power, performance, simplicity, and price that’s hard to beat. But despite all the high points, a top drawback often reported by owners is its suspension.

While the stock KYB suspension is decently capable out of the box for average trails, it has its limits in technical off-road terrain, especially in the hands of a skilled rider. Soft springs and limited travel of 8.3 inches (210mm) in front and 7.9 inches (200mm) in the rear mean you’re likely to start bottoming out on the larger bumps at faster speeds, which gets worse when loaded up for travel. The stock damping adjusters can take you only so far in tuning out negative characteristics and the limited ground clearance leads to early skid plate scraping in rough terrain.

TracTive Launches X-treme Pro long-travel suspension for Tenere 700

Compared to other off road-focused adventure bikes in the class like the KTM 890 Adventure R, Tuareg 660 and Tiger 900 Rally Pro, it’s down about an inch on the suspension travel specs. Even a casual off-roader like the V-Strom 800DE offers more.

Few Adventure Bikes seem more deserving of a suspension upgrade than the T7 and we’ve all seen the upper end of the model’s potential on full display in the talented hands of Pol Tarres, who uses TracTive suspension components on his custom-built bikes .

For those owners who want to unleash their own potential on the trail, TracTive Suspension has the killer T7 mod in the form of the X-Treme Pro (+25mm) Long Travel kit . The kit not only increases suspension travel and ground clearance by roughly an inch front and rear, but also upgrades the quality of the suspension with race-level componentry for improved stability, control and confidence on the trail.

Front Suspension Upgrade

Tenere 700 Suspension Upgrade

Ever felt your T7 fork clunk on a big rock or deep rut? That’s exactly what the TracTive front suspension upgrade is designed to fix. The X-Treme Pro (+25mm) Long Travel front cartridge kit is a drop-in upgrade to the existing 43mm Tenere 700 fork that doesn’t require any special mods to install. Not only does it increase suspension travel on the fork to 9.3 inches, it also offers rebound damping on one leg and compression on the other with convenient hand-adjustable dials right on top. No more getting down under the bike with a screwdriver to change compression damping settings at the bottom of the fork. The fork kit also adds preload adjustment to the front, which is useful in setting up the optimal attitude of the bike.

TracTive Launches X-treme Pro long-travel suspension for Tenere 700

The TracTive Tenere 700 fork kit utilizes an advanced closed-cartridge system that separates the oil from the air in a closed chamber pressurized with nitrogen gas. With the oil under pressure, it won’t foam or cavitate when heat builds up during aggressive riding like it can with a standard open-cartridge fork. Air bubbling in your fork oil causes a reduction in damping performance and doesn’t keep the internals well lubricated either. The main benefit is smooth and consistent performance that won’t taper off, along with more-precise damping adjustments.

Damping and bump absorption is further improved with the use of a large 35mm cartridge piston, one of the biggest among aftermarket suspension suppliers. This big piston facilitates high oil flow transfer during compression and rebound for maximum damping control — the more oil you can transfer, the more you can slow down fork movement. And when you’re really getting down to the end of your suspension travel during a big impact, there’s a hydraulic end stop waiting in reserve to help prevent any hard bottoming. (MSRP: $1,695)

Rear Suspension Upgrade

Tenere 700 Suspension Upgrade

Just getting the stock Tenere 700 airborne a few inches off the ground can sometimes lead to bottoming out the rear suspension, especially if you’re a rider in the 200+ pound range. To combat this, TracTive swaps the stock shock for a much beefier unit that features a CNC-machined 6082 T6 aluminum housing with a hardened 42CRMo4 piston rod attached to a stout 46mm damping piston, along with high-strength bearings and stainless-steel bushings.

Like the fork kit the TracTive X-Treme Pro (+25mm) Long Travel rear shock increases the travel of the suspension, raising it to 8.9 inches in the rear. Damping is provided through high-flow oil channels, low-friction seals, an off-road specific shim stack, and an external reservoir containing significantly more oil and cooling surface than the stock shock. This ensures predictable, stable, fade-free performance in the rough stuff.

TracTive Launches X-treme Pro long-travel suspension for Tenere 700

In addition to rebound damping adjustability, the shock features separate high- and low-speed compression damping adjusters to provide more precise tuning of the rear suspension’s behavior for both quick hits and slower undulations on the trail. All damping adjustments are performed using convenient clickers for quick changes on the fly, instead of tools like the stocker. The preload adjuster also has a greater range of adjustment to support higher loads that may occur during travel, especially two-up. In addition, the shock can be purchased with or without a hydraulic ‘hand dial’ preload adjuster (HPA) that enables quick and easy preload adjustments for varying loads without tools.

Tenere 700 Suspension Upgrade

If the longer travel and more-effective damping aren’t enough to counter a particularly big hit, the TracTive X-Treme Pro shock is equipped with a Position Dependent Damping System (PDSII) as a final defense against hard bottoming. The PDSII is a secondary damping piston mounted on top of the main damping piston. When a big hit occurs, this second damping piston enters a cup at the end of the compression stroke that creates an additional damping force. It’s like a high-tech bump stop that effectively absorbs and dissipates energy in the final phase of compression, when needed. Minimizing the number of big impacts during long off-road rides not only improves comfort and safety but also reduces wear and tear on the bike and body. (MSRP: $1,395)

Custom-Tuned Suspension

While the installation of both the fork kit and replacement shock can be done by anyone with basic mechanical skills, the technical fine-tuning work is performed at the suspension shop. Upon purchase, you’ll fill out a form that details exactly how your suspension gets configured before your products are shipped out. Both the X-Treme Pro fork kit and replacement shock get custom springs and application-specific tuning based on the rider’s weight and intended usage, whether your focus is racing, overlanding, two-up touring, or technical trail exploring.

If you’re not the long-legged type and want to keep the stock T7 ride height you can also opt for the standard height X-Treme Pro fork and shock upgrade kit, instead of the ‘Long Travel’ option. You still get all the benefits of a premium aftermarket suspension with technology on par with what top-level racers are using, like the improved damping performance and hard bottoming resistance. TracTive also has a low suspension X-Treme fork and shock kit that reduces suspension travel by about 0.8 inches (-20mm) for those that want to drop the seat height even more.

Tenere 700 Suspension Upgrade

All TracTive products are fully serviceable and include a 2-year warranty. Pricing for the X-Treme Pro Long Travel shock starts at $1,395 and $1,695 for the fork kit. Not a bad investment considering that after upgrading a new Tenere 700 you’d still have a few thousand dollars in your pocket for additional mods when compared to purchasing a KTM 890 Adventure R, as well as a roughly 15-pound lighter machine with higher-spec suspension.

So if you are looking to upgrade your beloved T7 with the suspension Yamaha should have put on it from the factory (even better in fact), TracTive’s X-Treme Pro kits are definitely worth a look. The kit is also a compatible upgrade for the Tenere 700 World Raid and Extreme models for those who live overseas. Check out the TracTive website where you can see the range of options for the Tenere 700 and search local suspension shops that carry their products.
