How To Spend A Perfect Day In Balochistan Adventure & solo female travel blog

Where Is Balochistan?

Balochistan is a region in Asia covering the south-west of Pakistan, south of Afghanistan, and south-east of Iran. The region is home to the Baloch people as well as various other ethnic groups.

This post primarily refers to the Pakistani province of Balochistan, which covers places like Quetta, Ziarat, the Bolan Pass, and the coastal regions.

Why Visit Balochistan?

Foreign girl in traditional Balochi dress by the sea in Hingol National Park, Balochistan, Pakistan.

Simple answer: Because it’s beautiful.

Long answer: Balochistan is a vast region consisting of mostly arid and mountainous land. You’ll find some of Pakistan’s most beautiful places there, such as deserts, mountains, waterfalls, and beaches, proving that not everything beautiful has to be lush and green. Plus, the people in Balochistan are friendlier than you could ever imagine.

This post focuses on the coastal part of Balochistan, home to pristine beaches, unique rock formations, and sweltering deserts.

Is Balochistan Safe For Travel?

Whenever Balochistan is in the news, it probably isn’t for good things. As of today, the region is still troubled by occasional unrest caused by religious and ethnic feuds as well as an ongoing independence movement. For this reason, Balochistan is oftentimes considered the least safe province of Pakistan .

However, if you’re an experienced traveler, you’ll know that safety is always relative. More often than not travelers can roam around Balochistan and encounter nothing but limitless hospitality. And luckily for travelers from Karachi, the coastal regions are especially safe thanks to their low population density.

You can see more and more tour companies offering day trips from Karachi to places like Kund Malir Beach and Hingol National Park without any incidents, further proving that all the places listed in this post are safe for travel.

Can Foreigners Go To Balochistan?

Foreign girl in traditional Balochi dress standing on Makran Coastal Highway in Hingol National Park, Balochistan, Pakistan.

Unfortunately, as of today most parts of Balochistan are prohibited zones for foreigners, meaning that foreigners must obtain a nonobjection certificate (NOC) from the interior ministry in Islamabad prior to traveling. The only ways that foreigners can visit Balochistan without an NOC are by:

  • Flying into Quetta: Foreigners are allowed to roam around the city but can only leave the city with a registered tour company.
  • Crossing overland from Iran via the Taftan Border: Foreigners are picked up by military or police and escorted to Quetta. According to first-hand accounts, this journey is very nerve-racking and overall not recommended.

There are also accounts of foreigners “smuggling” themselves into Balochistan in a variety of ways, from traveling with fake IDs to bribing fishermen to take them to the other side. Although this worked out fine for most people, the stakes are high if you are caught and can result in detention for weeks and the involvement of your embassy.

Due to the difficulty of visiting the coastal areas as a foreigner, this itinerary is geared mostly towards domestic travelers.

How To Get To Balochistan’s Coastal Regions

A colorful truck in Hingol National Park near Lasbela, Balochistan, Pakistan.

Simple answer. Public transportation is pretty much nonexistent along the Makran Coastal Highway and you need to get around independently. So if you don’t have your own car or have a good friend who has a car, you’ll have to rent one – or just hire a driver for the day. This makes a day trip from Karachi to Balochistan a little pricey.

Sorry budget travelers.

The good news is that you can always share a car with other travelers , so instead of 18,000 rs (~ $112 USD), you might only have to pay 6,000 rs for the trip.

Itinerary For An Incredible Balochistan Day Trip From Karachi

Enough of all that yadi-yada, let’s get going!

This itinerary includes all the major sights of the eastern half of the coastline that can be seen during a day trip from Karachi. The schedule is quite stuffed, so if you intend to visit all of these sites, it’s imperative to leave Karachi early in the morning . Leaving the house around 7:00 AM should be your goal.

Gadani Ship-Breaking Yard

Gadani Beach in Balochistan, Pakistan. An idyllic little beach right next to Gadani ship-breaking yard and only two hours drive from Karachi.

Only a two-hour drive from Karachi lies the first rather eerie stop on our Balochistan day trip from Karachi. The coastal town of Gadani in Lasbela district is home to the world’s third-largest ship-breaking yard, where local men work all day on disassembling large ships from around the world. With a bit of luck, you might be able to enter the yard and witness the egregious conditions under which these people work.

Why bother visiting such ugly places , you might be wondering.

Turns out that right next to the ship-breaking yard, you’ll find one of the most beautiful untouched beaches in Pakistan . Blessed with pink rocks, smooth sand, and turquoise water, Gadani Beach is like a piece of Heaven. Enjoy an aerial view from the rocks or dip your feet in the refreshing sea, but beware of the currents.

Hingol National Park/Princess of Hope

Princess of Hope in Hingol National Park, Balochistan, Pakistan as seen from Makran Coastal Highway.

After driving a few miles on the Makran Coastal Highway, you’ll enter Hingol National Park, the largest national park in Pakistan . Unlike most national parks in the north, Hingol National Park isn’t known for green valleys and 8000-er peaks but for deserts and unique rock formations like the “Sphynx” and the “Princess of Hope”.

The Princess of Hope is the western-most point on this day trip from Karachi. This naturally-formed human-shaped rock formation received its name after a visit by Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie. Its elevated position makes it an incredible viewpoint to follow the princess’ gaze into the Arabian Sea.

Kund Malir Beach

An aerial view of Kund Malir beach in Balochistan, Pakistan. The sand is yellow and the sea is turquoise.

Slightly southeast of the Princess of Hope lies Kund Malir Beach, one of Pakistan’s most famous resort beaches. As tourism in the region is increasing, there are more and more activities that visitors can engage in, such as bathing, surfing, paragliding, and ATV rides .

Although all of these activities are great fun, it’s advised to spend only a short time at the beach if you intend to visit all the sights on this itinerary.

Hinglaj Mata Mandir

Hinglaj Mata Mandir and Nani Mandir, a Hinduist temple complex in an oasis in Hingol National Park, Balochistan, Pakistan. One of the most important Hindu pilgrimage sites in Pakistan.

The next stop is quite off the beaten path and you might have to ask locals for exact directions but the effort is undoubtedly worth it. Hinglaj Mata Mandir and Nani Mandir belong to a complex of Hindu temples hidden in a refreshing oasis about half an hour inland from the coast. The settlement is extremely remote, housing only around 20 settlers during normal times, however, once a year, this important pilgrimage site attracts hundreds of thousands of Hindu devotees traveling from as far as India !

I don’t want to spoil all the interesting stuff in this post, you should visit yourself, but it’s impossible to write about these temples without praising the incredible hospitality of the people living there. Despite being a religious minority, Hindus are just as friendly as everyone else in Pakistan . That being said, have a cup of chai, listen to the caretakers’ stories, but don’t forget about the time!

Did this pique your curiosity? Read the full story about my incredible experience at Hinglaj Mata Mandir in this Instagram post!

Chandragup Mud Volcanoes

Girl standing on top of Chandragup mud volcano in Hingol National Park, Balochistan, Pakistan, during sunset.

The last stop of this Balochistan day trip from Karachi is a group of three volcanoes known as the Chandragup Volcanoes. If you’re scared of lava, relax . The Chandragup Volcanoes won’t spontaneously spit out hot lava and burn you alive because they are entirely made out of mud , only making a few blub sounds every once in a while. Due to their location near the temples, the nearly 100-meter-tall mud volcanoes are a significant place of worship for Hindu devotees.

The Chandragup volcanoes lie slightly off the road but the dry clay terrain is easy to drive on for all types of cars. What’s more important is to wear shoes with a good grip that you don’t mind getting dirty . There are staircases that go up the volcanoes but for the last few meters, you’ll have to make your way through the thick and sticky mud. Luckily, you’ll forget about the struggle as soon as you reach the crater because the top of the Chandragup volcanoes is an incredible place to enjoy the sunset at the end of an incredible Balochistan day trip from Karachi.

Not sure what shoes to pack? Get inspired by this complete Pakistan packing list and prepare yourself optimally for the trip of a lifetime!

If You Have More Than One Day

Foreign girl in traditional Balochi dress in the desert of Balochistan, Pakistan.

The itinerary above promises an amazing day trip from Karachi but if you have some more free time on your hands, why not take advantage of it? Below are a couple of suggested additions to your Balochistan trip if you have two or more days to spare.

Ormara Beach (2 Days Trip)

Ormara Beach is another popular resort beach in Balochistan west of Hingol National Park. The beach is a popular camping spot where you can rent tents or stay in cabins right beside the sea. And due to the low population density of the coastal areas, Ormara Beach is a fantastic spot for stargazing !

If you have two days to spare, head to Ormara after exploring Hingol National Park and spend the night there. This way, you can cover the main attractions in a more relaxed manner.

Gwadar (Multi-Day Trip)

If you have multiple days to spare, you can embark on the ultimate Makran road trip and travel all the way to Gwadar, the westernmost city of Pakistan. The distance from Karachi to Gwadar is 630 km but the journey takes only eight hours if you travel non-stop on the Makran Coastal Highway.

Gwadar is one of the most fascinating cities in Pakistan, if not the world. The “Shenzhen of Balochistan”, as I like to call it, used to be a tiny fishing village until just a few years ago but thanks to CPEC (China-Pakistan Economic Corridor), Gwadar is now home to the deepest seaport in the world and on the way to becoming a sprawling ultra-modern city like Dubai. But despite all of these developments, Gwadar is nothing short of idyllic beaches and authentic local culture.

Things To Keep In Mind When Traveling To Balochistan

Girl sitting in the middle of Makran Coastal Highway in Hingol National Park, Balochistan, Pakistan.

This itinerary lists all of the important places that travelers to Balochistan mustn’t miss out on during a day trip from Karachi but an itinerary alone doesn’t prepare you for a trip.

Here are some things to keep in mind to prepare you for an impeccable day trip from Karachi:

Fortunately, the Makran Coastal Highway is in excellent condition, so you won’t have to fear nightmares like in northern Pakistan . However, due to the low population density of the coastal areas, it’s crucial to fill up on fuel (both for the car and for you) in Karachi or Lasbela . If you run out of gas in the middle of the road, it’ll take a while to find help.

Due to the desert environment, the coastal areas can get unbearably hot in summer. The best time to visit the coastal regions of Balochistan is therefore winter, when temperatures remain pleasant and other destinations in Pakistan are too cold.

Connectivity

Except for the few towns and beach resorts that you’ll pass on the way, there’s mostly no reception along the Makran Coastal Highway. I therefore recommend downloading offline maps in advance.

Hingol National Park and the surrounding areas is rich in wild life, so it’s advised to stay near the roads. Be vigilant around the bushes since there are plenty of venomous snakes and stay away from plants you don’t know.

As sparsely populated as the coastal regions may be, we mustn’t forget that they’re home to locals following their own customs. Although I’ve heard accounts of visitors bathing at Kund Malir in bikinis, I advise travelers to stay modest in respect for the local culture and opt for a burkini instead.

Another “concern” is the immense hospitality of the local people. When I stopped for a cup of chai with my small group, the owners insisted on not letting us pay and it was a tough struggle to convince them otherwise. So if something like this happens to you, insist on paying for your things for a couple of rounds rather than just accepting your freebie right away.

Although the coastal areas are mostly safe, Balochistan as a whole remains a sensitive area. Therefore, it’s advised to play things low-key. Of course, you should have fun and enjoy yourself, just don’t do super crazy things that might raise suspicions.

Female Safety

I’ve talked to some of the bravest solo female travelers in Pakistan, but none of them advises women to travel to Balochistan alone for a variety of reasons. It’s best to travel in a small group with trusted male friends.

Balochistan is hands down the best destination for an incredible day trip from Karachi thanks to its natural beauty. The coastal regions are a must-visit place for nature-lovers who have seen enough green valleys and looking for a more off-the-beaten-path destination. It isn’t the best destination for cultural travel at the first sight due to the low population density but the small settlements like Hinglaj Mata Mandir that you’ll encounter on the way are even more intriguing.

That being said, getting to Balochistan remains a bit of a challenge, especially for foreigners, but perhaps that’s what makes a day trip from Karachi to Balochistan such a special experience. 2. Pir Ghaib Waterfalls

Pir Ghaib Waterfalls, Bolan Valley, Quetta

Pir Ghaib Waterfalls, located in Bolan valley, Balochistan is a hidden gem that is still relatively unknown to the world. Situated just 70 kilometers away from Quetta, the waterfalls make a perfect destination for tourists seeking to escape the city’s hustle and bustle. As visitors approach the waterfall, rocky mountainsides greet them, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding area.

The Pir Ghaib Waterfall makes its way through streams, ponds, and palm trees before finally cascading down into a pool at the bottom. Visitors can take a dip in the cool waters or simply sit back and relax while enjoying nature’s beauty. The sound of falling water creates an atmosphere of tranquility which makes this place perfect for anyone who wants to unwind from their daily routine.

According to legend, in the early days of Islam, Pir Ghaib along his sister, the renowned Bibi Nani, came to this location to convert the inhabitants. Yet the worshippers of fire despatched an army to pursue the religious couple. The siblings split up in the Bolan Gorge; Bibi Nani proceeded down the canyon (her alleged grave is underneath a bridge about 15 km downstream), and her brother ran away into this desolate area with the army chasing after him. When he realized he was trapped by the rock wall at the entrance of the gorge, the saint begged the Almighty for help. He cut the rock to accommodate the holy man. As a result, people henceforth referred to him as Pir Ghaib, The Invisible Saint.

3. Moola Chotok

Khuzdar District, Moola Chotok, Waterfall

In the Khuzdar District of Pakistan’s southern region of Balochistan, a secret ravine known as Moola Chotok exists. High rocks surround the cascading waterfall widely known as Chotok, making it one of the largest waterfalls in Sub Tehsil Moola. Its historic and geographical significance lies in its role as the entry point connecting west and central Balochistan, Sindh, and Iran.

This route offers the shortest travel across central Balochistan and Sindh (Moola Pass). Thorekhear, Hatachi, Hayrav, Kial Beig, and Pasta Khan’s ancient ruins provide evidence that Moola Chotok belonged to this 2,000-year-old civilization. The district of Khuzdar gives rise to the river known as Moola Chotok, which is located in Jalawan.

The place has become increasingly popular among tourists due to its natural beauty and unique features. Moola Chotok boasts crystal-clear water streams, cascading waterfalls, towering cliffs, and lush green valleys. The highlight of Moola Chotok is the natural pool formed by the waterfall. 5. Hingol National Park

Hingol National Park, Makran, Balochistan

Hingol National Park, the largest national park in Pakistan, stretches along the Makran coast. The park covers approximately 6,100 km² (2,400 sq mi) and is located in the three Balochistan districts of Gwadar, Lasbela, and Awaran. Karachi is located 190 kilometers away.

In 1988, Hingol was designated as a national park. The park bears the name of the southern section of the Hangul River, which flows alongside the Arabian Sea’s coasts and is home to a vast population of birds and a diverse array of marine species. Hangul National Park is unique among Pakistan’s national parks in that it has six diverse ecosystems, as well as desert and plains regions.

The Hangul River tributary, that is the breeding ground for hundreds of migratory birds and marsh crocodiles, and a rocky mountain range form the park’s northern and southern boundaries. The Makran Coastal Highway, constructed in 2004, is the park’s distinctive rock formations and has been drawing visitors from all across the nation.

In Pakistan, Hangul National Park serves as a natural haven for species on the verge of extinction. Over 257 plant plus 289 animal species, along with hundreds of rare species, live there, ranging from mammals to migratory birds. Various locations reportedly host over 60 crocodiles, with marsh crocodiles often spotted on the beach adjacent to Hangul National Park.

6. Kund Malir Beach

Kund Malir Beach, Hingol National Park, Places in Balochistan

Situated at Hingol National Park, in Balochistan, Pakistan, Kund Malir is a beach roughly 150 km from Zero-Point on the Makran Coastal Highway. It is situated 147.1 km west of Karachi. The route from Kund Malir to Ormara is regarded as picturesque. The region is a component of Pakistan’s largest national park, Hingol National Park.

A small Baloch fishing community known as Kund Malir perches on a hill overlooking the ocean. The sea waves over the white sand and the blue ocean draw in passersby. Last year, Kund Malir earned a place among the top 50 beaches in Asia, considering both tourism and photography when creating this rating. Moreover, since the water isn’t much deeper here than at the well-known beaches of Hawke’s Bay, Mubarak Village, and Kaka Pir, both ladies and children plunge into the ocean floor.

You can find a hotel nearby where food is available at reasonable prices. However, finding drinking water at Kund Malir might be difficult for most tourists. The majority of visitors to Kund Malir come for a “day vacation,” although others choose to stay overnight on the beach. In relation to this, some shelters have also been built along the coast which range from highly expensive to reasonable ones.

The Balochistan government also made the decision to construct a resort atop Kund Malir, although neither a hospital nor a rescue facility are located there. The clear lake and unpolluted surroundings are quite beautiful here.

7. Pir Chattal Noorani Gandhawa

Pir Chattal Noorani Gandhawa, Jhal Magsi, Balochistan

Pir Chattal Noorani Gandhawa is a mystical oasis located in Jhal Magsi, Balochistan. The oasis is considered a paradise on earth by many visitors due to its amazing beauty and breathtaking surroundings. However, what most people don’t know is that this remarkable place has a secretive story behind it.

Pir Chattal Noorani Gandhawa is a hidden gem in the heart of Pakistan. This oasis has been home to thousands of fishes for centuries, reaching up to 2 feet long! Despite its abundance of marine life, the locals have never hunted or fished in this area. But why? The site has become famous because of its unique belief system, where people believe that if they harm or eat the fish living in the oasis, they will suffer a painful and embarrassing death. 8. Astola Island

Astola Island, Island of the Seven Hills, Arabian Sea

The deserted Pakistani island of Astola, popularly known as the “Island of the Seven Hills,” is located in the Arabian Sea, 25 km south of the nearest point of land and 39 km southeast of the fishing town of Pasni. Spanning roughly 6.7 km in length and covering an area of approximately 6.7 km2, Astola stands as the largest offshore island in Pakistan. Administratively, it falls under the Pasni subdistrict of the Balochistan province’s Gwadar District. To reach Astola, motorized boats departing from Pasni offer access, and the journey typically takes around 5 hours in total.

The island is made up of a sizable plateau that is slanted and seven little hillocks that have deep chasms and fissures a few feet wide (thus the indigenous name “Haft Talar” meaning “Seven Hills”). The island contains a number of natural caves and coves. The island’s north side is cliff-like with a steep vertical drop, whilst the south face dips off gradually.

A number of Astola’s endemic living types have survived thanks to isolation. Hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbracata) and endangered green turtles (Chelonia mydas) lay their eggs on the beach below the cliffs. Moreover, the island is a crucial habitat for unique reptiles such the Astola viper (Echis carinatus astolae). Many water birds, including coursers, curlews, godwit, gulls, plovers, and sanderling, are said to breed on the island.

Every year, between the months of October and May, fisherman from the mainland temporarily establish themselves on Astola to harvest lobsters and oysters. The island is unoccupied from June to August since it is not a good time for fishing, the seas are rough, and the tides are high.

9. Mehrgarh

Mehrgarh, Quetta, Kalat, Sibi

In the Kacchi Plain of Balochistan in Pakistan, Mehrgarh is a Neolithic archaeological site that dates from about 7000 and 2500/2000 BCE. Between the Pakistani cities of Quetta, Kalat, and Sibi, it is situated close to the Bolan Pass, to the west of the Indus River. An archaeological team headed by French experts found the site in 1974.

The archaeological deposits, spanning approximately 250 hectares, are mostly deeply buried beneath alluvium buildups. However, in some places, ‘in situ’ buildings can be seen degrading on the surface. Moreover, the site’s currently visible excavated remains encompass a collection of sizable compartmental mud-brick buildings, mounds, and a few formal cemeteries. Notably, some of these cemeteries have had portions excavated.

The Mehrgarh culture, considered the birthplace of the Indus Civilization, played a crucial role in the Neolithic revolution. Significantly, Mehrgarh also functioned as a crossroads for trade and commerce along one of the earliest trading routes. This revered and well-known heritage site, dating back 9,000 years, stands as a testament to Pakistan’s pride in the history of human civilization.

10. Koh-i-Chiltan

Koh-i-Chiltan, Dasht-e-Bedaulat, The Wretched Plain, Places in Balochistan

In the southwestern region of Quetta, approximately 20 km south of the city, lies the imposing purple peak known as Chiltan, soaring 3,308 meters above sea level. The local Brahui people residing in its shadow affectionately call it “Chehel Tan,” which translates to Forty Souls, a name steeped in legend. According to the folklore, a Brahui shepherd and his wife, despite years of marriage, remained childless until they were blessed by God with an astonishing forty children. Overwhelmed by the responsibility, the couple decided to keep only one child and left the rest in the Hazarganji forest.

As time passed, rumors circulated about elfin children dwelling in the mystical ravines, luring travelers into the woods. Those who attempted to chase them were forever lost in the uncharted depths of Hazarganji, as these elusive beings were impossible to catch. Determined to bring back their abandoned offspring, the shepherd ventured into the wilderness with his last remaining child. However, the forest pixies outwitted the old man, taking away their final sibling and disappearing into the woods, never to be seen again, now remembered as ghosts. Consequently, the peak earned its name, Chehel Tan.

Despite its arid surroundings and limited rainfall, the mountain’s contours are teeming with diverse plant and animal life. Wild olive, pistachio, and acacia trees flourish alongside a plethora of herbs, grasses, and wildflowers. Here, the enigmatic Chiltan markhor, believed to be a cross between a true markhor and a wild sheep, roam. Among the rocky terrain, rodents skulk, while partridges and various other birds make their presence known from the lush bushes. Chiltan’s fragile ecosystem is a testament to the resilience of life in a harsh environment.

Challenges Faced by Tourists in Balochistan

Balochistan is a beautiful province of Pakistan, known for its rugged mountains, sprawling deserts, and stunning beaches. However, despite its beauty, Balochistan remains one of the most challenging tourist destinations in the country. Tourists face numerous challenges when visiting this province due to a variety of factors.

One of the biggest challenges that tourists face in Balochistan is security concerns. The province has been plagued with violent attacks and sectarian violence in recent years which has made many people hesitant to visit. Additionally, tourists often have difficulties navigating through the remote areas due to poor infrastructure and limited transportation options.

Another challenge faced by tourists in Balochistan is language barriers. Most people living in Balochistan speak either Balochi or Brahui languages which can make communication difficult for non-native speakers.

Government Efforts to Increase Tourism in Balochistan

The government has recognized the immense potential that lies in the province’s tourism industry. In recent years, it has taken several steps to increase tourist activity and improve overall infrastructure for visitors. The provincial government is actively working on developing new tourist destinations, enhancing existing ones, and introducing policies to attract more foreign and domestic tourists.

One of the major initiatives taken by the Balochistan government is the construction of new roads and highways connecting various parts of the province. These roads have made it easier for tourists to travel around and explore different areas within Balochistan. Additionally, a significant amount of funding has been allocated towards improving safety measures for travelers, including increased police presence in popular tourist destinations.

In an effort to showcase its rich cultural heritage, Balochistan has also organized several festivals and events aimed at promoting tourism within the region.

Future of Tourism in Balochistan

The future of tourism in Balochistan is promising, but it requires a lot of work and effort from the government and private sector. Balochistan is one of the most underdeveloped provinces in Pakistan, with limited infrastructure and resources for tourism. However, there are many natural wonders and cultural sites that can be explored by tourists.

The government has to invest in infrastructure development to provide better access to remote areas like Gwadar, Ziarat, and Quetta. The province has rich history and culture that should be highlighted through museums and historical sites. Besides this, the government needs to ensure the provision of basic amenities like clean water, sanitation facilities, hotels, restaurants for tourists.

With newly developed infrastructure and improved security, the region is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for travelers from all over the world. The government must take advantage of this opportunity to boost economic growth and create jobs by investing in the development of tourist facilities, attractions and activities. Local communities should also be encouraged to benefit from increased tourism by developing their own businesses and services that will appeal to visitors.

A ten-day trip into the heartland of Pakistan’s largest and least visited province, Balochistan. A region previously very difficult to access, but now possible. We begin with 4-day journeying along the Makran Coastal Highway between Karachi and Gwadar, with a feast of contrasting experiences.

From the apocalyptic ship-breaking yards of Gaddani, to spotting dolphins in mangrove swamps via mud volcanoes in Hingol National Park and beautiful desolate beaches. From there we head into the hinterland of Balochistan, where the subcontinent turns to a sparsely populated and arid Central Asian landscape.

Finally, you spend a night next to Jinnah’s residency in the world’s largest Juniper forest in Ziarat.

Start point – Karachi End point – Karachi Maximum number of people: 8

Please note permission for Balochistan takes a LONG time. We ask you submit all documents and book the trip at least 120 DAYS in advance.

  • All accommodation
  • All ground transport
  • One internal flight (Quetta – Karachi)
  • Permission to visit Balochistan
  • Visa support
  • Any necessary visas
  • Other flights
  • Lunch & Dinner

Arrive in Karachi. Transfer to hotel.

Overnight in Karachi.

After breakfast, departure from Karachi towards Uthal. The first stop will be at Gaddani ship-breaking yard. Our next stop will be at the fishing village of Damb, where we take a boat trip to explore the mangroves and hopefully seeing the local dolphins.

Overnight in Uthal.

On route to Ormara today and we hit the Makran Coastal Highway in earnest. Following the route taken by Alexander the Great back from India, over 2300 years ago. We will visit Hingol National Park, the largest in Pakistan. Time to stretch the legs a little – the park is famous for the mud volcanoes, rugged rock formations and its Hindu temple. From there we will continue on past the beautiful beach at Kund Malir.

Overnight in Ormara.

A morning drive to Pasni Beach where we will take a boat trip to Astola Island. Also known as Jezira Haft Talar or the ”Island of the Seven Hills,” Astola Island is Pakistan’s largest offshore island located in the Arabian Sea, and it is renowned for its natural beauty, historical significance, and unique marine habitat.

Once back on the mainland we continue to Gwadar.

Overnight in Gwadar.

We will spend the morning exploring Gwadar where we will visit the bazaar and the Corniche where we may get to see some traditional ship building. Then visit Jiwani Beach via the coastal road to Ganz. In Jawani we will see fisherman and the bazaar and may be permitted to visit the colonial era “Victoria Hut” – currently managed by the Pakistani Coastguard.

Then drive back to Ormara in the afternoon.

A long day’s driving.

Return along the Makran Coastal Highway, then turn inland to Khuzdar. En route we will visit the Gondari caves.

Overnight in Khuzdar.

Today we will be travelling more than 300 kms to our final stop, the City of Quetta. En route we will stop in the city of Kalat, famous for the Meeri Fort, which overlooks the city. Once in Quetta we will take a walk through possibly the friendliest bazaar in Asia.

Overnight in Quetta.

Today we will take a train trip through the famous Bolan Pass, the southern counterpart to the Khyber Pass, to the town of Sibi. We then return to Quetta. The train track drops 1000 metres in altitude through the length of the pass.

Overnight in Quetta at Hotel

Another day excursion driving to the mountains and hills outside of Quetta to Ziarat, famous for the Quaid-e-Azam Residency and its ancient Juniper forest.

In the morning visit Quetta Bazaar. After lunch, transfer to Quetta airport for flight to Karachi.

End of trip in Karachi.

We do not and cannot offer a uniform accommodation standard on our itineraries. Even if we wanted to, the reality is that standards in Quetta cannot be compared to a remote government resthouse in a small town. We consider comfort, location, design, character, historical interest and whether the money we spend will go into the pockets of the local community when we make our choices of where to stay.

The accommodation will be based on guests sharing a twin room. We will pair guests of the same gender. Optional single supplement is available upon request for an additional US$400.

  • Entrance fees

We do not directly arrange international flights to Pakistan. We can suggest routes and operators.

Pakistan now has an e-visa system. We will provide visa support in the form of letters of invitation to assist in your Pakistan e-visa application.

We include breakfast every day. We also include some other meals in remote areas when trekking as stated on the itinerary. In our experience people sometimes want to eat different things in different places at different times and when there is an option we will be happy for you to have your say. We know some great places and will also happily show you some of our favourite restaurants and tea houses. Some are luxurious, some are more earthy but all have character. However, we do not pretend to be the arbiters of good taste and are equally happy for you to go off and find your own favourites. However, when restaurants are unavailable we ensure that food is provided.

When we choose our vehicles and drivers we take into consideration the road conditions, the length of journey and the competence of the man behind the wheel. Most of the roads on this trip are paved although the state of the surface can vary. Your comfort and enjoyment of the journey is the top priority. Note that we may well have a police escort at times and will not be permitted to travel at night.

On this trip you will be accompanied by an English speaking guide from Untamed Borders for the whole time you are in Pakistan. This allows for greater flexibility and means that there will always be someone on hand to help or assist you.

Balochistan has a bad reputation and can often appear on blacklists by the foreign office. However, we know these areas well and our guides are used to accompanying small groups to all parts of Pakistan. We may well be issued with an armed escort at times. However, we monitor the situation closely and we listen very carefully to advice from the foreign office and from our friends in the areas we visit. Our client’s safety is our primary concern. We must state that the tour leader has the final word with regards to changes in the itinerary for safety reasons. Whilst the route we have chosen passes through areas which we consider to be stable things can change and we may have to alter the route or cancel sections of the trip at short notice.

The Ghaznavid dynasty conquered the Khuzrad Balochistan as Arab power declined. By the 17th century, it had become the capital of the Jhalawan Kingdom, but the Khanate of Kalat invaded the district later. In 1903, after the British seized command of the subcontinent, they appointed a political consultant in Khuzdar Balochistan. Pakistan gained control after it gained independence in 1947. Khuzdar served as the district headquarters of the Balochistan States Union from 1952 to 1955. It represented itself as the capital of the Kalat Division in 1955, but it separated in 1974 to form an independent district.

Kanrach Valley

Ziarat valley, moola valley, urak valley.

Kanrach Valley is called the land of waterfalls because there are numerous streams pouring down lofty mountains. It has recently attracted the tourists’ attention, especially of those who keep looking for weekend getaways near Karachi , as the capital city of Sindh is only 3 to 4 hours drive away. One should explore each and every waterfall in the valley and you can do that only if you control your temptation to take a dip in each of them which will be highly unlikely.

On your way to Kanrach you will see streams of crystal-clear water surrounded by shrubs. The mountains in this area are known for their peculiar formations and gigantic size. It is the administrative capital of Ziarat District and enjoys pleasant weather throughout the year. When we talk about the beauty of Ziarat, we do not, and should not, limit it to its mountains. The place is a treasure trove of history and diverse traditions.

The name Ziarat has a Persian and Arabic origin which means shrine. There are shrines of many Sufi saints along with other sacred sites. The road to Ziarat Valley is surrounded with Juniper trees some which are even older than 5000 to 7000 years making them the oldest Junipers in the world. Apart from the residents of the valley, only some people know that there is a Quaid-e-Azam’s house popularly known as Quaid-e-Azam Residency which is well-preserved and open for tourists.

Among the few things that are on the wish list of every tourist is tasting local food. The people of Balochistan welcome the visitors and tourists very warmly. You will enjoy their hospitality if you get a chance to stay the night at a local’s house. Their culinary specialties are famous across the country but the best taste can only be found at its hub.

For tourists, the most popular spots for sightseeing are Prospect Point and Hanna Lake in Ziarat. From the top of Prospect Point which is 6 kilometres from Ziarat, you can enjoy the beautiful view of Koshki Valley. Another famous tourist spot is Hanna Lake which is 100 kilometres from Ziarat. The lake was formed as a result of the construction of a reservoir during the British colonial era.

Remember we mentioned an oasis in Balochistan at the beginning of this piece? Well, Moola Valley in Balochistan has a natural waterfall oasis called Moola Chotok which is a hidden paradise for adventurers. Your trip to Moola Chotok will not be complete if you have not taken a dip into the crystal blue water of Moola Valley.

The valley is surrounded by dry and rocky mountains. There is also a river named after the valley that flows all year round and it is also believed to be the source of waterfalls. If you have decided to go to the Moola Chotok, you will need to rent a jeep that will take you to the base of the hill. After that, you will have to trek for a few minutes which will take you right to the spot that will freshen up your eyes and soul both. Moola is the name of the nearest village and Chotok means falling water and hence the waterfall is known as Moola Chotok.

tourist places in balochistan

Urak Valley is situated in close proximity to the city of Quetta—about 150 kilometres away from Ziarat. It is one of the more famous tourist spots in Balochistan because of the presence of freshwater springs. However, the highlight of this place is the Hanna-Urak Waterfall.

Oh, and you’ll also be pleased to know that Urak Valley is home to fruit orchards, which mainly consist of peach, plum, apricot and apple trees.

So, this was our overview of the beautiful valleys in Balochistan that deserve a spot on your travel bucket list. While there are a lot of travel guides and maps you can use to reach any of these places, getting yourself a local guide will help you save time.

It isn’t possible these days to be a citizen in Karachi and not ‘hang out’ or have tea at a Dhaba. Dhabas are roadside tea establishments that serve tea and other hot and cold beverages, along with different types of breads and sometimes even fast food. In recent years many vibrant and ‘new agey’ Dhabas have popped up around the city that are based on unique themes like Bob Marley, truck art, the local movie industry and Game of Thrones, which has inspired the creation on Westeros. However, what sets them apart from the strict competition is their menu. They are a modern day dhaba with a GoT twist, offering dragon stone oven baked pizzas, dragon balls and fire and chocolate brownies.

Karachi is blessed with a vast shoreline and it’s a must to make the most of it. If a nighttime swim at devil’s point under the full moon at 12 am is a bit too wild you can perhaps explore the waters through a boating expedition from Port Grand. The port offers a boat ride around the mangroves that line the Karachi coast, a speed boat ride and a special floating party deck when you have something special to celebrate. There is also an art lane at this sea-facing hub, where various artworks are displayed in an indoor plus outdoor gallery space. There is also a night bazar and many weekend attractions like magic shows, musical and dance performances and fire shows. Lastly, their wide array of restaurants are also worth checking out.

Karachiites need not look any further for some simple innocent fun than Seaview, aka Clifton Beach. The long shoreline of the beach is a sight to behold, unlike any other during sunsets as the sky is painted in hues of yellow, orange, pink and purple under the magical sight of the sun sinking in the Arabian sea. Along with the majestic view come activities like horse and camel rides, buggy rounds and flying lit-up plastic kites. A simple barefoot walk with good conversation while biting on some roasted corn sprinkled with Karachi-style lemon and chilli dressing is in itself a lovely and unique experience.
