I kind of dread going into stores like Journeys, mostly because sometimes employees can be a little aggressive, and there's always teenagers or kids running around, being annoying. But, I had to go in there to buy my black 1460 Dr. martens (not a lot of places besides Portland carry them). I went in, and Bellah was so kind, polite and ready to help us, being attentive but in no way overbearing. Neither of the journeys stores in Salem had my size, so I was a little sad, but Bellah took care of it. She ordered my size, and even gave me 15% off (which is a lot considering the shoes were $140). She was swift, knowledgeable, and funny. She made my brief journeys experience a nice one. She also gave me a thorough run down of my order receipt and a little tutorial on how to use the leather balsam. Thank you again Bellah!!!
I ordered a pair of Uggs online on 1/11/16. They were defective so I got online to find them in a store near me to make an exchange but everywhere was out of stock including online. I contacted them about what to do on 1/20/16. First, they do NOT reply in the time frame they state. Once they finally replied they told me they would and a return label, i would have to send them back and then they would send me a new pair. I got several email saying a return label was requested but I have yet to receive it. All stores an online are out of stock so I guess I am stuck. Its not a big defect but i paid $129 it would be nice if hey were in perfect shape. I will NEVER shop here again and I have kids that loved shopping here, I will find their shoes elsewhere.
I'm afraid I felt pressured by the girl working there to buy a particular pair of shoes. She was nice and helpful, but I got the impression they are really trying to up their sales or something. Also, the music in the store was so loud I couldn't hear myself think. I know the store is geared toward teeny boppers, but they might be more successful if they turn the volume down just a touch and stop pressuring people to buy things. Just my opinion.
I hope to raise the stars at this Journeys with my experience. We went into the store at Washington Square Mall in Beaverton because my 8yo found really cool high top converse shoes in the window. We were informed that color was exclusive to Journeys, which I was familiar with exclusive versions. The sales associate would measure her foot to find he didn't have that size in stock. We were traveling and couldn't wait the week to get a size from another store in. He offered to call around for a size in stock. He found a size in the mall near our house in San Jose and called them to find out they would not hold them the week it would take to drive down and pick them up even if we pre paid. He then called Salem at the Lancaster mall and called to see if they would hold the week and they would! We drove in right as the mall opened, talked to the sales associate who said I have them right here! I LOVE Oregon customer service. Thank you for helping an 8yo find the perfect school shoes.

Music Review: Johnny Cash’s ‘Songwriter,’ a collection of unreleased songs from 1993, is a journey

NEW YORK (AP) — In 1993, Johnny Cash was between record contracts — and just about to embark on an iconic collaboration with producer Rick Rubin that would span the last 10 years of his life, starting with 1994’s “American Recordings.”
During that crucial time in his career, Cash immersed himself in crafting and recording original demos that showcased his songwriting prowess. Those songs, once set aside, will be released Friday as a complete album. Cash’s son, John Carter Cash, stripped the recordings back to just his father’s voice and acoustic guitar — and enlisted co-producer David “Fergie” Ferguson and some musicians his father previously worked with to round out the recordings.
Aptly titled “Songwriter,” the album features 11 tracks all penned by Cash. Just two tracks will be familiar to fans of the Rubin records: “Drive On” and “Like a Soldier” were previously released on “American Recordings.” While the Rubin renditions favored deeply-felt minimalism — just an acoustic guitar and Cash’s idiosyncratic vocal tone — the “Songwriter” versions possess a more layered sound with additional instrumentation. Not better, just different.
Emphasizing Cash’s role as a songwriter, this collection exists in contrast to his typical albums or recorded live performances, which often blend his own compositions with other writer’s songs. This album allows listeners to appreciate Cash as a performer, composer and lyricist, highlighting a unique intersection of his artistic journey.
The previously released first single, the rockabilly infused “Well Alright,” exudes Cash’s unmistakable style to such a degree that it could have easily found a place alongside classics like “Big River.” (In an alternative timeline, the track might appear in The Grateful Dead ’s repertoire back in the day — they’ve certainly covered many Cash songs.)
In whole, “Songwriter” provides insight into a short creative phase of Cash’s career that would become interrupted by a brilliant creative collaboration with Rubin. While not his most audacious work, “Songwriter” still serves as a poignant journey into a defining moment of Cash’s musical legacy. And who doesn’t love to hear previously unheard material from the Man in Black?

I feel an obligation not to cry around my dog else she gets frightened and shakes. I’m not comparing children to dogs like Israel does, but they share emotionality and deep sensitivity and her shaking reminds me of the videos I downloaded onto my phone of Gazan children shaking in fear in hospitals that had only weeks left until US-made bombs destroyed them. I dreamt someone was writing on my eye, the tip of the ballpoint pen silently scribbling what I knew but couldn’t see to be Arabic calligraphy. Half-ticklish, half-squeamish, I was drugged or otherwise paralyzed, sunk in a fluffy bed. If I was Christian I might think it was the intake process for heaven, my virtues and sins entered into the record. The eyewriting began to feel like paper cuts I couldn’t flinch from. I was going to heaven blind and paralyzed. That might’ve been worse than whatever hell was. Or is this what was meant by hell—not a separate place for a different passport, just heaven’s lower caste? I couldn’t see it but I knew, as if it had been whispered in my ear, there were no Palestinians in hell. In the bright emptiness, that’s what made me cry and force myself to stop.

After Hajj Deaths, Egypt Suspends Companies That Took Pilgrims to Mecca
The action against 16 tour companies came as governments look into whether many travelers were not properly registered to make the journey into the desert.

By Gerry Mullany
After hundreds of pilgrims died in the scorching desert heat during the annual hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, the Egyptian government announced on Saturday that it had suspended the licenses of 16 tour companies that had facilitated travel for some pilgrims to Saudi Arabia.
At least 450 people have died during this year’s pilgrimage, in which travelers endured maximum temperatures that ranged from 108 degrees to 120 degrees Fahrenheit (42 to 49 degrees Celsius). But the actual number of fatalities is expected to climb as governments get more accurate tallies of the deaths. (Egypt, for one, has officially acknowledged only 31 deaths.)
In announcing the suspension of the 16 travel companies, the Egyptian government said the businesses failed to offer the pilgrims important services like medical care. It said the companies did not provide the pilgrims with “appropriate accommodation,” which caused them to suffer from “exhaustion due to the high temperatures.”
Reuters reported that some travel agencies may not have officially registered for the pilgrimage, to get around the high costs of package tours. And, Reuters said, companies were being blamed for letting pilgrims travel to Saudi Arabia on personal visas, rather than hajj visas, which provide access to medical care and the holy sites.
Mahmoud Qassem, a member of Egypt’s Parliament, said the travel companies “left the pilgrims stranded and turned off their mobile phones” so they could not hear the travelers’ calls for help.
There were also complaints that pilgrims were not given access to enough cooling stations or water amid the intense heat.
The number of unregistered visitors — in addition to the intense desert heat — could have left Saudi Arabia unprepared for dealing with such a large influx of people.
Tunisia’s government has said that the death toll of pilgrims from that country was expected to rise from the 49 reported on Friday, as the number of people traveling on tourist visas became more clear.
The hajj has been the site of several tragedies, including a stampede in 2015 that killed more than 2,200 people . In recent years, with rising temperatures, many pilgrims have also succumbed to heat stress .
The Saudi government has said that during this year’s hajj, more than 1.8 million Muslims traveled to Mecca, 1.6 million of them from outside Saudi Arabia.
Hager Al-Hakeem contributed reporting from Luxor, Egypt.
An earlier version of this article misattributed reporting on travel agencies that may not have officially registered for the pilgrimage to the hajj. It was from Reuters, not The Associated Press.
