Les Halles de Lyon

Lyon is considered the "culinary capital of France" – quite a compliment in a country famed for its cuisine and fine vintages. You'll discover why during a tasting at the famous Les Halles de Lyon, the celebrated indoor food market that's been a fixture in Lyon since 1850. It offers an unbelievable array of breads, cheeses, fresh fruits and vegetables, sausages, wines, chocolates... the list goes on. Everything is fresh and delicious, and it's said that the best chefs in Lyon shop here… so enjoy!

Truffle hunting in the Rhône Valley

Trained dogs and "black diamonds" – truffles – in grignan along the rhône.

The Italians call them tartufo, but to the French and much of the rest of the world, they're known as truffles. But whatever you call it, this rare, pungent (and highly perishable) fungus that grows under the ground in certain parts of Europe is one of the most expensive foods on Earth, highly prized by chefs and gourmets around the globe. Centuries ago, early truffle-hunters used pigs, with their keen sense of smell, to root these treasures out of the ground… but the piggies usually ate the truffles as soon as they found them! So they began training dogs to sniff them out... like the pooches you'll meet and go truffle-hunting with today at a truffle farm in Grignan… followed by a tasting of products made with this precious ingredient.

In springtime, the famous villa and gardens in the village of Giverny is awash in pink and green, adorned in wisteria, azalea and water lilies, and basked in dappled sunlight reminiscent of the works of its 43-year resident, painter Claude Monet. Our exclusive early-opening visit to the pioneer Impressionist's retreat shows you the artist's home as he lived it and painted it. Monet's pink stucco house gives the impression that his family of 10 still lives there; its rooms showcase private furnishings, and his collection of Japanese prints adorn walls throughout. Walk along pathways bordered with nasturtiums, hollyhocks, hybrid lilies or snapdragons, and go through the tunnel that leads to the Water Garden and the Japanese Bridge.

I was only English speaker on board. Number of Passengers - 60 so very comfortable. The crew all spoke English and kept me informed. The cruise director Henri ensured that the local guides on excursions would give me personal commentary. I was initially rather stumped with no French conversation possible at meal times but met up with some really friendly Germans who invited me to join their table.

Let's Go: Kayak Ride on the Gardon River

Slather on some sunscreen and plan to get wet as you spend a couple of fun and relaxing hours on the clear, tranquil waters of the Gardon. Accompanied by a soundtrack of chirping cicadas, you'll paddle along the river, spotting trout and water birds on the shores. Your adventure ends with a marvelous view of the arches of the oldest extant Roman aqueduct in France, the 2,000-year-old, UNESCO-designated Pont du Gard. This magnificent tri-level aqueduct bridge has spanned the Gardon since 19 BC, when it was constructed as part of the system that carried water from Uzès to Nîmes. An enchanting village where time seems to have stopped centuries ago, Viviers has a long and storied past that goes back more than 1,600 years—and a splendid architectural heritage to match. At one time, Viviers was divided along religious lines—the clergy lived in the upper part of the town, the laity in the lower part. Your exploration of the town will take you through both parts, as you begin at the crest and make your way to the riverbank.

You’ll see the handsome houses constructed by wealthy merchants and garrison officers when you walk through the Rue de Doux area, and you’ll pass the 14th-century church and the oldest secondary school in France.

You’ll recognize the Hospices de Beaune (also known as Hôtel-Dieu) immediately by its fabulous multicolored-tile roof—it’s a symbol of Burgundy. Founded as a charitable institution by the duke’s chancellor in 1443, the hospital became a model for charitable giving in southern France, one with a unique fundraising tradition that continues to this day. Over the centuries, the hospice monks were given wine and vineyards, and they began selling the wine at auction in order to support their charitable work. The wine auction is now world-famous, and the institution remains a working hospital for the poor, with modern facilities standing alongside the historic Hôtel-Dieu.After seeing Hôtel-Dieu, check out the farmers’ market, which spills from street to street in the Old Town. Cheeses, fruits, vegetables, local sausages, breads—all are on colorful display here. Browse and assemble your own picnic lunch or take advantage of one of the many delightful sidewalk cafés for lunch.

Mont Saint Michel - Wonder of the Western World

One of France's most iconic sights, the abbey of Mont St. Michel seems to float above the shallow bay, impossibly beautiful. It's been a pilgrimage destination for a thousand years, as well as a fortress, a beacon of independence and even, at one point, a prison. Travel to this marvel of medieval architecture today, crossing the causeway bridge (the new one, which permits the tides to scour the bay and keep it free of silt) and climbing the cobblestone lane that twines around the island to the top, where the Gothic church reaches heavenward. Explore the historic crypts, chapels and vaults that support the church and cloisters above, stand on the walls that withstood a 30-year assault by the English in the 15th century and marvel at the legendary view.

It would be hard to find a more spectacular location than Étretat’s clifftop course, which is ranked as one of the best in France. Originally laid out in 1908 and substantially redesigned in the 1990s, it offers a multitude of challenges: Two nine-hole loops take players right to the cliff’s edge, the wind can be a serious challenge in and of itself, and the 10th through 14th holes offer formidable tests of a golfer’s skill. Spend the morning on the course, lunch on your own in charming Étretat and explore the seaside village that so many artists, including Monet, rendered in paint, or return to the ship for lunch and a leisurely afternoon onboard.

Just a short 10 minutes from where our ship is docked, in the forests above Caudebec-en-Caux, lies a Norman monastery dating back to the 7th century. The Abbey of St. Wandrille is now of the Benedictine order, and we'll be meeting one of its brothers today for a personalized journey through various parts of the monastery. As you take in the site's architectural highlights, your guide will provide fascinating insight into the old order and life for St. Wandrille's modern monks. Lyon’s history is entwined with silk, which dominated the city’s economy for centuries—at one time, almost a third of the city’s population were silk weavers. Jump on a tram and head for Lyon-Perrache station with your guide, who will take you into the historic Saint-Jean Quarter, part of the UNESCO-honored Old Town. The Gothic cathedral is probably the most striking heirloom of the Middle Ages, but the tall rose and ocher buildings dating to the Renaissance pay tribute to the importance of the silk trade with Italy in that era. Enter the courtyard of the Gadagne Museum, which is housed in an early16th- century building, and stroll along Rue Juiverie, which has been occupied since Roman times and was once home to Nostradamus. You’ll see some of the traboules, the old passageways that snake between and through buildings, secret shortcuts that silk weavers took to keep their delicate fabrics out of the rain. You’ll pass cozy bouchons, which serve traditional local dishes, and you’ll have a chance to see a Jacquard loom in use.

This quaint village makes for an enticing day trip for many reasons—its charming canals, pretty greenery, waterside cafes, and narrow streets, for example. What Isle sur la Sorgue is most famous for, however, is its art and antique shops. With over 300 dealers in town, this village is one of Europe’s most important centers for antiques. It’s an absolute paradise for collectors or anyone looking for unique souvenirs.

Get to know the village as you stroll around with your local guide, who will tell you the story of how the town’s booming antiques industry has come to be. After your walk, you’ll have some free time to do some shopping in town before it’s time to drive back to the ship.

Van Gogh paid tribute to Arles’ atmospheric beauty in some 200 paintings, including Starry Night Over the Rhône . It’s an ancient city boasting a remarkable collection of Roman ruins; among them are a theater where the famous Venus of Arles—on display in the Louvre—was discovered in 1651 and an amphitheater that is still used for sporting events. Join a local expert for a stroll through this district, where medieval houses crowd in among the ancient structures and the city gates date to the 13th century. Pause before the town hall, built with stone quarried from the Roman theater, and the Romanesque St. Trophime Church, which was erected in the 12th century. It replaced the church where St. Augustine, the man who converted the inhabitants of England to Christianity, was consecrated by the first archbishop of Canterbury. As you prepare for your journey, we encourage you to prioritize your health and the health of those around you. Although not required, Viking recommends that you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines ahead of your departure and as recommended by your healthcare provider.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) offers comprehensive guidelines to ensure you are protected from contracting and spreading contagious diseases to your fellow travelers, your ship’s crew and the communities you will visit along your voyage.

Some countries require vaccinations to visit. Be sure you are aware and have planned for all relevant vaccine requirements.

Small Ships

Our Switzerland-registered river vessels host just 190 or fewer guests; our fleet of Norwegian-registered all-veranda ocean ships and all-Nordic Balcony expedition ships host only 930 guests and 378-guests, respectively. And with no interior staterooms on any of our ships, guests enjoy expansive views from outside staterooms.

Purified Air

Enjoy fresh air in your stateroom, knowing that all staterooms on Viking ocean, river and expedition ships feature independent air handling units that do not share air with other areas of the ship. Take comfort in knowing that the air in the public areas of your ship has also been purified with high-density filters, which kill 99% of all airborne viruses and bacteria.

Medical Services

While every precaution can reduce the risk of illness, we are also prepared for that outcome. Our ocean and expedition vessels and the Viking Mississippi have state-of-the-art Medical Centers. While onboard our other river vessels, guests can seek medical guidance via a 24/7 hotline staffed by doctors ashore that can be accessed through the ship’s dedicated online portal or by phone.

Housekeeping

Rest assured that the surfaces on your ship will be cleaned and sanitized continuously with daily scheduled deep cleanings.

Dining & Entertainment

On your ship, you can expect spacious, airy public areas and abundant options for al fresco dining. Also, on our ocean and expedition voyages, as always, you can enjoy complimentary 24-hour room service. Should you choose to do so, the ship is equipped with capabilities that allow you to watch live events and enriching content through your in-room entertainment system.

Canada is a country of cruisers according to Virtuoso’s 2024 Luxe Report, which gathers information from its network of travel advisors who arrange travel for a typically affluent clientele. Cruise sales in 2023 rose 48% above 2022, with the trend proceeding in 2024, said Una O’Leary, Canada GM for Virtuoso Travel. Highlighting adventure cruising as a top trend for Canadian travellers, the report notes Canadians are willing to travel great distances for dream experiences.

As one who has reviewed cruise ships and myriad itineraries since 1990, the question I’m most often asked is: What is the best cruise?

Well, that depends on your lifestyle preferences, available time, budget, and where you wish to go. My choice of 2024’s best – or most desirable – cruise ships afloat are: Atlas World Voyager, Crystal’s Symphony and Serenity, Cunard’s Queen Anne arriving in May, Explora Journeys Explora I with Explora II arriving soon, Oceania Vista and sister Allura launching soon, Regent Seven Seas Grandeur, Seabourn’s Venture and Pursuit, and Silversea’s Silver Nova and Silver Ray launching soon.

As global horizons brim with exciting destinations, the newest itineraries beckon intrepid cruisers to view rarely-seen vistas and wildlife, experience awesome adventures, or immerse themselves in local culture. Here are ten itineraries sure to spark bragging rights.

1. Viking’s Paris & Heart of Normandy

This 8-day Seine River cruise loops from Paris to Rouen in Normandy, giving guests a glorious sense of the historic river that influenced French art, culture, cuisine, and history. Viking’s included excursions give an excellent view of Paris’ essential sites, plus a visit to Napoleon’s Chateau Malmaison. Stops along the Seine include medieval villages and dreamy Giverny for the house and gardens where Impressionist artist Claude Monet painted his cycle of water lilies. 2. Cunard’s British Isles Festival Voyage

Every port offers chances to experience active adventure and historic culture. From Belfast, the Giant’s Causeway and Titanic Trail. From Cobh, Blarney Castle and Cork sites. 4. Seabourn’s Beyond The North Cape

Seabourn high Arctic expedition including Svalbard Seabourn Venture’s 12-Day Svalbard – Beyond The North Cape takes guests on the ultimate Arctic adventure, starting north of the Arctic Circle in Tromso, Norway and ending in Edinburgh, Scotland. From Piraeus, Greece (port for Athens) Seven Seas Grandeur calls at Bozcaada and Istanbul, Turkey; Taormina, Sicily; Sorrento for Capri, Italy; Civitavecchia to access Rome, Italy; Cannes and Marseille, France, before disembarkation in Barcelona.

6. Oceania Cruises’ Kiwi & Aussie Majesty

Oceania Regatta’s 15-day itinerary from Auckland, New Zealand to Sydney, Australia mingles active escapades through stunning nature and wildlife with indulgent culinary and wine experiences, while introducing guests to vibrant local cultures, both Aboriginal and modern.

This excellent itinerary offers excursions to New Zealand’s best sites within a time frame impossible by a land tour. Crystal Symphony’s 11-day itinerary  from Hong Kong to Yokohama, port city for Tokyo, takes guests on an immersive journey through the history and delights of Asian culture, both ancient and modern.

Starting in Hong Kong, the voyage continues to Keelung, Taiwan en route to a comprehensive tour of Japan. Notable ports of call include tropical Miyako-Jima, Naha Okinawa, Kagoshima, Kochi, and Kobe, prior to overnighting in Yokohama for excursions to Tokyo.

8. Explora Journey’s Cinematic Shores and the Panama Canal 

Explora 1’s leisurely, 19-day itinerary from Los Angeles to Miami, called Journey from Cinematic Shores and the Panama Canal An Extended Journey takes guests on a superbly luxurious voyage to San Diego; Mexico’s Cabo San Lucas, Mazatland and Puerto Vallarta en route to Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala.

From there, guests visit Puntarena, Costa Rica before crossing the iconic Panama Canal. After stopping in Panama City, the cruise continues to Cartagena and Santa Marta Columbia before arriving in Miami.

9. Holland America Line’s Yukon + Denali

As Alaska celebrates its 65th anniversary of statehood, many lines offer special cruises. Holland America Line’s 14-day Yukon + Denali cruise on ms Kongingsdam offers the most exciting combo of sea and land experiences, with chances to view the Northern Lights. From Anchorage, guests overnight in Alaska’s Denali National Park before visiting Fairbanks.

After flying to Dawson City, Yukon for another overnight, they continue to Whitehorse, northern Canada’s largest city, then on to Skagway to embark on the Alaska route to see Glacier Bay and Ketchikan. The cruise continues through the Inside Passage to Vancouver, British Columbia.

10. Icon of the Seas’ Caribbean Adventure

The world’s biggest ship, Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas is a destination unto itself. Loaded with spectacular options for thrill-seekers and families with kids, Icon is conducive to intergenerational bonding, as grandparents can easily retreat to secluded, adult-only pools and lounges.

The Miami-based Icon sails year-round, seven-day Caribbean itineraries Eastern routes include Philipsburg, St. Maarten; Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, and Basseterre, St. Kitts & Nevis. Western routes include Puerto Costa Maya, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras, and Cozumel Mexico. Each itinerary includes a day at the line’s private island called Special Day at Coco Cay, where kid-free types can hide away at an adult-only pool and beach.
