So, if you’re ready to embark on a journey of transforming your office into a travel haven, let’s dive in and explore the possibilities of a travel-themed office makeover!
Choosing a Travel Theme
When it comes to creating a travel-themed office, the first step is to choose a specific travel theme that resonates with you. This theme will serve as the foundation for all the design choices in your office space.
There are numerous travel themes to choose from, depending on your personal preferences and style. You might opt for a retro travel theme, inspired by vintage travel posters and advertisements. This theme can bring a sense of nostalgia and charm to your office.
Alternatively, you might prefer a tropical or beach-inspired theme, reminiscent of sandy shores and palm trees. This theme can create a tranquil and laid-back atmosphere in your workspace.
If you’re an adventure seeker, a wilderness or mountain theme could be the perfect fit. This theme can evoke a sense of exploration and ruggedness, inspiring you to think outside the box.
Once you’ve chosen your travel theme, it’s important to keep it consistent throughout the office. This means incorporating design elements, color schemes, and decor that align with your chosen theme. Consistency is key to creating a cohesive and visually appealing space.
Remember, the travel theme you choose should reflect your personality and interests. It should be a theme that inspires and motivates you as you work.
So take some time to consider the various travel themes available and choose one that ignites your passion for adventure. Let your chosen theme guide you as you embark on the journey of transforming your office into a travel haven!
Color Scheme and Decor
The color scheme of your travel-themed office plays a crucial role in creating the desired ambiance and setting the right mood. It’s essential to choose colors that evoke a sense of travel and wanderlust.
When it comes to color choices, consider using earthy tones such as shades of brown, beige, and green to represent nature and the outdoors. These colors can bring a sense of calmness and serenity to your workspace.
Incorporating pops of colors commonly associated with travel destinations can also add vibrancy and excitement to the office. For example, shades of blue can represent the sky and ocean, while warm yellows and oranges can evoke images of sunsets and exotic locales.
When selecting decor items, think about incorporating travel-related elements. Display vintage maps on the walls or use globes as decorative pieces. Hang framed travel photographs or artwork of famous landmarks. Incorporate travel-inspired patterns and textures through curtains, rugs, or throw pillows.
In addition to color and decor, consider incorporating plants into your office space. Adding indoor plants not only adds a touch of greenery but can also improve air quality and create a calming atmosphere.
Remember, the key is to strike a balance between the primary color scheme and the decorative elements. You want the decor to enhance the travel theme without overpowering the overall aesthetic.
By choosing the right color scheme and decor, you can create a visually appealing and inspiring atmosphere that transports you to your favorite destinations every time you step into your travel-themed office!
Wall Art and Murals
One of the most effective ways to bring your travel theme to life in your office is through wall art and murals. They have the power to completely transform the atmosphere of your workspace and immerse you in a world of travel and exploration.
Consider hanging framed photographs or artwork featuring breathtaking landscapes, iconic landmarks, or vibrant cityscapes from around the world. This not only adds visual interest to your walls but also serves as a constant reminder of the beauty and diversity of the places you aspire to visit.
If you have a larger wall space, you might consider a travel-inspired mural. This can be a hand-painted or wallpaper mural showcasing a scenic view, a world map, or an artistic representation of your favorite travel quote. Murals can add depth and dimension to your office, making it feel like you’ve stepped into a different part of the world.
Another option is to create a gallery wall with a mix of travel-related artwork, photographs, postcards, and even shadow boxes displaying small trinkets or souvenirs from your travels. This personalized display adds a unique touch to your office and allows you to showcase your own adventures and memories.
Additionally, consider incorporating functional wall art. Install a large magnetic board or corkboard where you can pin inspiring travel quotes, postcards, or notes. This not only adds visual interest but also serves as a practical space for organizing your ideas and inspiration.
Remember, the key is to choose wall art and murals that align with your travel theme and personal style. They should inspire, motivate, and transport you to new horizons every time you glance at them.
Whether you opt for framed photographs, travel-inspired murals, or a unique gallery wall, the choice of wall art in your travel-themed office is a powerful way to create an immersive and inspiring environment that fuels your wanderlust.
Furniture and Layout
When designing your travel-themed office, selecting the right furniture and arranging it in a thoughtful way can contribute to the overall functionality and aesthetic of the space.
Start by considering the size and layout of your office. If you have a larger space, consider incorporating a statement piece of furniture that captures the essence of travel. This could be a vintage-inspired desk, a leather armchair, or a reclaimed wood table. By choosing furniture with a travel-inspired design, you can enhance the theme while adding a touch of elegance to your office.
If you have a smaller space, prioritize functionality and choose furniture that maximizes storage and efficiency. Look for desks with built-in shelves or drawers to keep your workspace clutter-free. Utilize vertical space by installing wall-mounted shelves or hanging organizers for essential items.
The choice of materials can also contribute to the travel theme. Utilize natural elements such as wood, wicker, or bamboo to enhance the sense of being close to nature. Alternatively, opt for industrial-style furniture to evoke a sense of adventure and exploration.
In terms of layout, position your desk in a way that allows you to have a view of your inspiring wall art or murals. This can serve as a focal point and encourage productivity. Arrange your workspace to have a clear flow and ensure that your essential items are within easy reach.
Consider creating a cozy reading nook or seating area where you can unwind and find inspiration. This space can be decorated with cushions, throws, and a small side table to hold your favorite travel books or a globe.
Lastly, don’t forget about ergonomic considerations. Invest in a comfortable chair and set up your workspace in a way that promotes good posture and reduces strain on your body.
By carefully selecting furniture that aligns with your travel theme and paying attention to layout and functionality, you can create an office space that is not only visually appealing but also optimized for productivity and comfort.
Lighting and Ambiance
The lighting in your travel-themed office can significantly impact the overall ambiance and create a welcoming and inspiring atmosphere. It’s important to choose the right lighting solutions to enhance your workspace.
Start by maximizing natural light as much as possible. Position your desk near a window to take advantage of the natural daylight. Natural light not only increases productivity but also helps create a sense of openness and connection to the outside world.
In addition to natural light, incorporate layered lighting options to create a cozy and inviting ambiance. Consider incorporating a combination of overhead lighting, task lighting, and accent lighting.
Overhead lighting can provide general illumination to the entire room. Choose fixtures that match the style of your travel theme, such as pendant lights with a globe design or industrial-inspired chandeliers.
Task lighting is essential for focused work areas. Invest in a desk lamp that provides adjustable lighting to minimize eye strain and ensure proper visibility for tasks such as reading, writing, or working on a computer.
Accent lighting can add a touch of warmth and personality to your office. Use string lights or fairy lights to create a cozy and whimsical atmosphere. You can also incorporate LED strip lighting under shelves or behind wall art to highlight specific features of your travel-themed decor.
Consider using smart lighting solutions to create different moods in your office. With the use of voice commands or mobile apps, you can easily adjust the brightness and color temperature of your lights to suit your preferences and create the desired ambiance.
Lastly, don’t forget to incorporate dimmers or adjustable curtains or blinds to control natural light and create a more versatile and adaptable workspace.
By selecting the right combination of natural light and layered lighting options, you can create a welcoming and inspiring ambiance in your travel-themed office, perfect for fueling your creativity and productivity.
Travel-inspired Accessories
No travel-themed office is complete without the addition of travel-inspired accessories. These small details can make a big impact and further enhance the overall theme and ambiance of your workspace.
One of the easiest ways to incorporate travel-inspired accessories is through the use of decorative items such as trinkets, sculptures, or figurines. Look for items that depict landmarks, modes of transportation, or symbols of different cultures and countries. These accessories can serve as conversation starters and remind you of your travel aspirations.
Maps are another fantastic accessory to incorporate into your office. Hang a world map or a map of a particular region that holds special significance to you. You can use pins or markers to highlight the places you’ve been or want to visit, creating a visual representation of your travel goals.
Travel-inspired quotes and sayings can be displayed on wall decals, framed prints, or inspirational plaques. These quotes can serve as motivational reminders of the joys and wonders of traveling, igniting a sense of wanderlust within you.
Incorporating textiles and fabrics with travel-inspired designs is another great way to accessorize your office. Look for throw pillows, curtains, and rugs featuring patterns such as world maps, compasses, or vintage travel stamps. These textiles can add warmth, texture, and visual interest to your workspace.
Another idea is to display a collection of vintage postcards or travel brochures from different destinations. You can create a collage on a bulletin board or frame and rotate them periodically to add variety and showcase different parts of the world.
Finally, consider incorporating travel-related stationery and office supplies. Use notebooks or journals with travel themes for note-taking or creative brainstorming. Choose pens and desk accessories with map or compass motifs. These small details can add a touch of personality and flair to your workspace.
Remember, the key is to select accessories that align with your travel theme and bring you joy and inspiration. By incorporating these travel-inspired accessories, you can personalize your office and create an environment that speaks to your passion for exploration.
Displaying Souvenirs and Memorabilia
A travel-themed office is the perfect opportunity to showcase your souvenirs and memorabilia from your adventures around the world. Displaying these cherished items not only adds a personal touch to your workspace but also sparks fond memories and serves as a constant reminder of your travel experiences.
One of the simplest ways to display your souvenirs is by using shelves or floating wall-mounted display cases. Arrange your items creatively, incorporating a mix of trinkets, figurines, postcards, and other small mementos. You can create themed displays for specific regions or countries or mix and match items for a more eclectic look.
If you have larger items such as a traditional musical instrument, artwork, or textiles, consider dedicating a wall or a space within your office to showcase them. Hanging these items on the wall or using a freestanding display cabinet can create a focal point and give them the attention they deserve.
Utilize shadow boxes or display cases to highlight specific items and protect them from dust or damage. Arrange ticket stubs, maps, seashells, or other small objects in a visually appealing way. This method allows you to create a miniature museum-like display to evoke a sense of wonder and adventure.
Another creative idea is to incorporate a travel-themed gallery wall. Mix framed photographs from your travels with postcards, stamps, and handwritten notes. This arrangement not only adds visual interest but also tells a story and invites conversation.
If you have limited space, consider incorporating your souvenirs into your workspace in a functional way. Use a corkboard or a memo board to pin postcards or polaroids. Place magnets with iconic landmarks on your filing cabinet or whiteboard. These small touches can infuse your office with a travel vibe while serving a practical purpose.
Remember, the goal is to display your souvenirs and memorabilia in a way that is visually appealing and meaningful to you. By showcasing these items, you can transform your travel-themed office into a personal gallery that inspires and sparks conversation.
Organizational Solutions
A well-organized workspace is essential for productivity and a clutter-free mind. When designing your travel-themed office, it’s important to incorporate organizational solutions that not only keep your space tidy but also align with the overall aesthetic and theme.
Start by assessing your storage needs. Invest in functional storage solutions such as shelving units, cabinets, or storage boxes that can accommodate your office supplies, files, and any travel-related items you wish to store. Look for storage options that match the style of your travel theme, such as vintage suitcases or wooden crates.
Utilize desk organizers to keep your stationery, gadgets, and other frequently used items within reach. Consider using travel-themed containers for holding pens, paper clips, and other small accessories. This adds a touch of creativity to your organization while keeping your essentials organized and easily accessible.
Labeling is key when it comes to maintaining an organized office. Use travel-inspired labels or tags on your storage containers, folders, and drawers. This not only adds a decorative touch but also helps you quickly locate items when needed.
Consider incorporating a bulletin board or a whiteboard to keep track of your tasks, goals, and travel plans. Pin important notes, inspirational quotes, or travel itineraries to keep them visible and easily accessible.
Cable management is often overlooked but essential for maintaining a clean and organized workspace. Use cable clips or cord organizers to keep your cables and cords neatly bundled and out of sight. This small detail can make a big difference in the overall aesthetic of your office.
As you organize your office, think about the workflow and how you can optimize it. Keep frequently used items within arm’s reach and arrange your workspace in a way that promotes efficiency and minimizes distractions. Creating designated spaces for different activities, such as a writing corner or a computer workstation, can also help improve your productivity.
Remember, the key to effective organization is finding a balance between functionality and aesthetics. By incorporating travel-themed organizational solutions, you can maintain a tidy and visually appealing workspace that aligns with your travel-inspired design.
Incorporating Technology
In today’s digital age, technology is an essential part of our everyday lives, including our workspaces. Incorporating technology into your travel-themed office can enhance your productivity and streamline your workflow while still maintaining the overall aesthetic and theme.
Start by selecting technology devices that align with the look and feel of your travel theme. For example, opt for a sleek and minimalist laptop or computer that complements the design of your office. Consider using travel-inspired desktop wallpapers or screensavers to add a touch of wanderlust to your digital workspace.
When it comes to charging cables and cords, choose options that match the color scheme or blend in with the overall design. Utilize cable management solutions to keep them neatly organized and out of sight, reducing clutter and maintaining a clean look.
Explore travel-related apps and software that can assist in your work or travel planning. Whether it’s travel itinerary management, language translation, or virtual map exploration, these tools can enhance your overall experience and provide a seamless integration of technology into your travel-themed office.
Consider incorporating a travel-themed screensaver displaying rotating images of your favorite destinations or iconic landmarks. This can serve as a visual escape and remind you of the adventures waiting to be explored.
Augment your tech gadgets with travel-inspired accessories. Choose a mousepad or a laptop sleeve adorned with a world map or a travel quote. Find a Bluetooth speaker designed like a vintage suitcase or a camera lens-shaped USB drive. These small touches can add a personalized and whimsical touch to your technology setup.
Don’t forget about the importance of comfortable and ergonomic technology accessories. Invest in an ergonomic keyboard and mouse that allows for extended and comfortable use. Use adjustable monitor stands or laptop risers to ensure proper ergonomics and reduce strain on your neck and shoulders.
Lastly, create a digital travel vision board on your computer or on a dedicated digital frame. Collect inspiring travel photos, destination ideas, or itineraries. This digital vision board can serve as a constant source of inspiration and motivation to pursue your travel goals.
By integrating technology seamlessly into your travel-themed office, you can harness the power of digital tools while still maintaining the aesthetic and ambiance that aligns with your love for adventure and exploration.
Creating a Relaxation Area
In the midst of a busy workday, having a dedicated relaxation area within your travel-themed office can provide a much-needed escape and rejuvenation. This space allows you to take short breaks, recharge your energy, and find inspiration for your next adventure.
Start by selecting a comfortable seating option for your relaxation area. It can be a cozy armchair with soft cushions, a chaise lounge, or even a hammock if you have the space. Choose fabrics and patterns that align with your travel theme, such as tropical prints or natural earthy tones.
Enhance the relaxation area with accessories that promote comfort and tranquility. Add a plush throw blanket, comfortable pillows, and a small side table to hold relaxation essentials such as a cup of tea or a good book. Incorporate a small indoor fountain or a tabletop waterfall to create a soothing ambiance with the sound of trickling water.
Use scents to further enhance the relaxation experience. Consider using essential oil diffusers with calming scents like lavender or sandalwood. Alternatively, light scented candles or use travel-inspired room sprays that evoke memories of your favorite destinations.
Create a visual escape within your relaxation area by adding a floor-to-ceiling wall mural or a large painting depicting a serene beach, lush forest, or a breathtaking mountain landscape. These scenic views can provide a sense of tranquility and transport you to a different world.
Incorporate soft ambient lighting in this area to create a calming atmosphere. Use warm, dimmable lights or string lights to create a soft, gentle glow. Adding adjustable blackout curtains or blinds can also help create a cozy and peaceful environment when needed.
Consider including a small meditation or yoga corner within your relaxation area. Place a comfortable meditation cushion or yoga mat in a designated space where you can take a few minutes to practice deep breathing or do stretches to re-energize both your body and mind.
Remember, the relaxation area should be a dedicated space for you to unwind and recharge. Make it a rule to step into this space whenever you need a break, away from your work desk. This separation helps create a clear distinction between work and relaxation time.
By creating a well-designed relaxation area within your travel-themed office, you can find solace in the midst of a busy day and rejuvenate your spirit with a touch of wanderlust.
Personalizing the Space
Personalizing your travel-themed office is an essential step in creating a workspace that truly reflects your personality and inspires you on a daily basis. Adding personal touches can make your office feel like a home away from home and infuse it with a sense of who you are as an individual.
Start by displaying photographs of your own travel adventures. Select a few of your favorite pictures and have them framed or printed and hang them on the wall. Every time you glance at these photos, you’ll be transported back to those incredible moments and feel a surge of inspiration.
Showcase your own creative work or travel-related projects. If you’re a photographer, hang your favorite prints on the wall. If you’re a writer, display your travel articles or journals. This not only adds a personal touch but also serves as a reminder of your talents and passions.
Display items that have sentimental value or hold special memories from your travels. It can be a beautiful seashell you collected from a beach, a unique piece of art you purchased from a local artist, or a small trinket that symbolizes a memorable experience. Arrange these items in a way that sparks joy and brings a smile to your face.
If you have a collection of travel-related books or magazines, create a small library area with a dedicated bookshelf or display them on a coffee table. This not only adds an intellectual touch to your office but also allows you to immerse yourself in the world of travel whenever you need a momentary escape.
Consider incorporating a personal travel vision board or a map of your own travel goals. Pin photos of destinations you aspire to visit, and mark them on the map with vibrant pins. This visual representation of your dreams and aspirations keeps you motivated and focused.
Infuse your workspace with elements from your heritage or cultural background. This could be through artwork, textiles, or small decorative pieces that reflect your roots and ancestry. Incorporate these elements subtly to create a sense of pride and connection to your heritage.
Don’t forget to incorporate items that bring you joy and inspiration beyond travel. If you have hobbies or interests outside of travel, such as playing a musical instrument or creating artwork, make space for these items in your office. This allows your workspace to be a reflection of your holistic self.
Remember, personalizing your travel-themed office is all about creating a space that feels uniquely you. By adding personal touches and infusing the space with your own experiences and interests, you’ll create an environment that truly inspires and motivates you.
Transforming your office into a travel-themed haven is a delightful way to infuse creativity, inspiration, and a sense of adventure into your daily work routine. 70+ World Travel Themed Home Decor Ideas
Pretty soon, I’ll have my first place of my own (I’ve moved out before, but I was always in some sort of dorm), and I’m super excited to buy all the furniture, decor, and everything else that goes with getting your own place. Given my very obvious travel addiction, I thought it would make sense for a lot of the home decor in my new apartment to be travel themed. I can’t make EVERYTHING travel themed (my boyfriend would kick me out before we even moved in), but let’s just say people won’t have to guess what I had in mind when decorating our new place. So, if you are moving into a new place, or just looking to do some redecorating, check out these world travel themed home decor ideas!

Travel Inspired Living Room Decorations
Travel throw pillows.
Pillows are a great way to add just a touch of travel decor to a living room. They’re not overly obnoxious, but still obvious. Plus, since they come in so many different colors, it’s not too terribly difficult to find one that would match your couch!
Stacked Travel Chests
I found out real fast when looking at furniture that end tables are surprisingly expensive. So, when I saw these on Amazon, I thought it was a really cool idea. Instead of the traditional end table (that may or may not have a small drawer to put things in), why not get suitcase styled chests? They’re stack-able and can store way more than your traditional end table.
Suitcase Shelves
I found these in one of the home decor stores I had visited and thought it was a cute idea. Instead of the traditional wooden shelves, get creative and use shelves that were decorated to look like suitcases. They’ll match your suitcase end tables!
Travel Coasters
If you don’t already have some souvenir drink coasters from your various trips around the world, you can get some world map drink coasters to make sure your new, nice tables don’t get ruined by condensation from drinking glasses.
World Map Tissue Box Cover
I don’t think too many people use tissue box covers anymore, but I thought it was one of the more unique travel decor ideas. If nothing else, it’s a conversation piece!
Traditional Globes
What’s the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of travel decor? A globe of course! You can’t decorate your new place with a travel theme and not have at least one globe around.
Travel Themed Dining Room Decor
Travel placemats.
Like I mentioned above, once you get that nice, new table, you don’t want it to be ruined from moisture from cold drinks or hot plates. Placemats are an easy and common fix to that problem. If you’re going to be buying placemats anyway, might as well make them travel themed, right?
World Map Table Runner
If dinner placemats aren’t enough, why not complete the look with a matching table runner?
World Travel Bedroom Decor
Travel lamp.
Looking for something cool and unique to show off to all of your friends? Then you have to check out this floating globe lamp! It uses magnets to make the globe levitate and it even spins around like a traditional globe! It has LEDs built into the frame to make it light up and look even cooler! Of course, you can always go with the more traditional travel home decor too…
World Map Bed Comforter
Do you dream of traveling the world? I thought so! Why not go to sleep surrounded by a map of all the places you dream of visiting?
Travel Pillow Cases
Of course, you can’t have a world map bed comforter and not have matching pillow cases. You just can’t do it.
Travel Themed Bathroom Decor
Travel inspired shower curtains.
Since most showers require some sort of shower curtain (unless you don’t mind lots of water getting all over the floor), having a travel themed shower curtain is an easy way to add a touch of travel to your home life. It’s simple, and separate from the rest of the rooms in the house (in case you don’t want your guests overwhelmed by travel decor the moment they walk into your new place).
World Map Towels
If you are looking to make the entire bathroom travel themed (instead of just having a touch of it), you can also get bath towels that are travel themed. It’s especially nice if you have a rack where you can sort of hang them on display when not in use.
Travel Inspired Kitchen Items
Travel themed alcohol items.
Even if you’re not into the “travel decor” thing, you can still add a bit of travel to your home life. You can break out these glasses when you’ve brought home some souvenir drinks from your most recent destination.
World Map Plates
If you don’t have a big dinning room table, or aren’t really the type of person to use placemats and a table runner, you can still add a bit of travel decor to meal time with these cool looking plates!
Travel Inspired Napkins
My mom always gives me a hard time because I have a bad habit of wiping my hands on my jeans instead of using a napkin (especially when eating greasy or salty foods), but if I had these napkins, I might be a little more inclined to use them (hint-hint mom: these would make a good moving gift).
World Map Cutting Board
Cutting boards are another one of those more subtle items that don’t necessarily get put on display. Since most traditional cutting boards are typically pretty bland, you can spice yours up by getting a travel decorated one.
Travel Themed Office Decor
Push pin cork globe.
My boyfriend and I are to turning our second bedroom into an office since both of us have computer desks. It’s the perfect place to put a tiny globe like this one. Plus, it’s exciting being able to put a new pin in it every time we go someplace new.
Globe Book Ends
I LOVE books. Unfortunately I don’t have as much time to read as I used to (which I think is a shame given how much I really loved it), but I’m really proud of my bookshelves and all the books that sit on them. Plus, I’ve always loved the feel of sitting in a library (especially those rustic ones you see in movies). I figured why not combine some of my biggest passions and add a little travel decor to my bookshelves?
Book Box Covers
If you’ve never heard of book boxes, don’t feel guilty. I hadn’t heard of them either until I started shopping for home decor! Book boxes are great for those book lovers (like me) that want their books to remain in mint condition. You can put your favorite books in book boxes to protect them from dust and moisture. Plus you can give your bookshelves more of a universal look (like the rustic library I mentioned above).
Pencil Holder
Because no desk would be complete without a pencil or pen holder.
Travel Wall Decor
Decorative world maps.
This is what usually comes to mind when you think of travel decor (and usually some of the first results when looking online). You can always go with the traditional, school-like world map, but there are some really cool looking world maps out there if you’re looking for something a little more unique.
Scratch Off World Maps
In more recent years, scratch off world maps have become more popular. They’re a great way to showcase all of the different places you’ve been! My mom got me one for Christmas and I absolutely love it. However, all of the places I’ve been are pretty small, so it doesn’t look like I’ve scratched anything off, but I’m working on it!
Wall Clocks
This is another one of more simple travel decor ideas. It’s a common household decoration and easy to customize to your style. Plus, there are lots of different options out there, so it isn’t too difficult to find one you like.
Word Art and Hangings
You can find all sorts of quotes that have been turned into travel decor. I feel like almost every home decor store that I’ve walked into has had some sort of wall piece with an inspiration adventure quote on it. Even if you’re not looking to go all out with the travel theme, they’re something small and nice you can hang on the wall to express your passion for travel.
Other Travel Decorating Ideas
World map welcome mat.
What better way to welcome guests than to welcome them to your adventures? No better way to set the travel theme than to have it be the first thing you see!
Light Switch Covers
I don’t know if I would replace every light switch cover in my new place with a travel inspired one, but I thought it was a unique way to incorporate travel into home decor. At this point though, the rest of the place is already travel themed, might as well make the light switches travel themed too.
Outlet Covers
If you’ve got travel themes lights switch covers, it only makes sense that you have travel inspired outlet covers too. If you have one, you just have to have the other!
And that’s it for my long list of travel themed home decor! What did you think? Will you be including any of these items the next time you decide to do some redecorating? Let me know in the comments below!

Travel Themed Office Decor To Ignite Your Wanderlust
In by June 8, 2018 14 Comments
With summer nearly here, it’s time to start thinking about getting out of the office and going on vacation! It’s also time to start planning your Christmas/Holiday travel-request speech to your boss. *wink*
Inspire your next trip by designing a travel themed office! Use the decor and desk supplies in this post to showcase your love of globe-trotting, at work. These items will 100% ignite your wanderlust in those moments of boredom when you’re counting down the seconds ’til clock-out. Or maybe you work from home and you want to revamp your desk a little? This travel themed office decor is the way to do it!
1. Desk Calendar
A calendar is a great way to show off your love of travel. It’s like a schedule and a series of mini posters in one, so you might as well get one that ignites your wanderlust! With each new month, you get renewed adventure inspiration! Check out these examples of watercolor sketches, vintage travel posters, and National Park photography!
2. Desktop Photo Display
If you’re looking to make your coworkers jealous flaunt your past travels, consider getting a cool photo display! Hang your vacation pics from a Fotofalls arrangement, or put a few with some postcards in a planter display. Digital frames are also pretty popular. You can pop in a USB or an SD card, and select how long you want each photo to show for. (Just make sure to delete any NSFW pics first haha).
3. Desk Clock
Add a unique and fun clock to your desk or office space. The first one below resembles the signs you see for your flight at the airport. The second is a wooden suitcase that actually latches open! You can put rubberbands, paper clips, or other little supplies inside.
4. Passport Notebooks & Travel Pad
These notebooks and notepad are just way too cute! Plus, the notepad has both blank and metallic gold ink lined pages. I don’t know about you, but instead of writing notes at my work meeting, I’d be jotting down my bucket list destinations.
5. File Folders
If you have files and documents to keep track of, you might as well store them in one of these playful folders! I’m loving the vintage world maps set from Cavallini Papers & Co! The travel quotes covering the middle folders are also pretty inspiring, while the last set of tropical print folders will leave you craving a Hawaiian escape.
6. Pen or Pencil Case
If you want a more organized way to store your pens and pencils, try one of these cases! Bonus points if you double the case as a makeup or makeup brush bag on your next flight!
7. Pencil Sharpener
But can we talk about these cute pencil sharpeners though?! I don’t even use pencils and I want these sharpeners something fierce! Guaranteed anyone working around you will forever be asking to use yours over their own.
8. Sticky Notes
I like these sticky notes, because they can also ignite wanderlust in your coworkers! Leave a work friend a message on their desk or write yourself a memo on these travel-inspired sticky notes. Stuck on what to write? How about “Girls Trip to Cabo next month?” or a reminder like “Ask boss for time off to Cabo.”
9. Tape Dispenser
How stinkin’ adorable are these?! Get your scotch tape from a globe, an airplane, or a beachy cocktail glass. Every time you tape something, you’ll be reminded to book that vacation.
10. I Love Travel Ruler
Get this geometric “I Love Travel” ruler for your desk! As if your coworkers couldn’t have guessed it by now, they’ll know for sure when they need to use your ruler.
11. Eiffel Tower Scissors
What a genius idea to make scissors in the shape of the Eiffel Tower. This European landmark will be calling your name whenever you use these. Open paper packages or cut supply tags while dreaming of Paris.
12. Paper Clips
Every last detail will be covered in making your travel themed office space. Right down to the paper clips! Sidenote : I desperately need these in my life, and so do you. Even if you don’t…you do.
13. USB Flash Drives & Hub
USB’s and flash drives don’t have to be ugly! Just look at the silver airplane and eiffel tower drives! I also came across this pretty pink and gold USB hub. It plugs into your computer and gives you up to 4 additional USB ports!
14. Map Keyboard Cover & Mousepad
This ultra thin rubber rainbow world map keyboard cover (well that was a mouth full) serves two purposes. Decoration and protecting your Mac laptops keys from the crumbs we get inside them. And hey, if you can’t get more vacation time, at least your fingers can travel the world! (Dad joke, or what? I’m sorry.) This second office item is a very large mousepad that goes under your entire keyboard, if you’ve got a desktop instead of a laptop.
15. Desk Accessories
You didn’t really think I’d make this decor list and not put a globe on it, did you? The wood and metal one has a vintage feel and gives off major explorer vibes. The second globe below is actually made of cork, and comes with pins to mark the countries you’ve been to! Dress up the rest of your desk with your travel souvenirs. And don’t forget to add a cool throw pillow to your chair!
16. Travel-Scented Candles
If you’re allowed to have candles in your office, consider getting one that transports you back to a favorite travel memory. Or get a scent that represents a country you’d love to escape to! This Caribbean Getaway candle smells like coconuts and strawberries. The blue Santorini Seaside candle next to it smells a bit exotic with hints of the ocean. The last two candles are by a company called Homesick. They make scents based off certain states and countries, and even this Road Trip candle — which apparently smells like “leather car seats and an air freshener hanging from the rearview mirror.”
17. Mug or Reusable Cup
If you start your work day with coffee or tea, why not get a travel themed office mug?! Or better yet, a reusable travel cup that screams adventure. A reusable cup or tumbler is an eco-friendly option for those that prefer to swing by a coffee shop on the way to work, while a mug is great for those that make their own coffee in the kitchen or break room. PS : The middle mug actually changes color as it heats up, and you can personalize it to reveal the states you’ve been to!
18. Worldly Coasters
Well if you’re gonna have coffee mugs and drinks at your desk, you should probably also have some globally-inspired coasters. These circular cork coasters are designed to show New York City’s Central Park and a grid of the surrounding streets! Then there are the cute tropical Bali leaves made of EVA foam. Lastly, the recycled rubber coasters designed to look like Moroccan tiles.
19. Watercolor Scratch Map
Guyz. These gold watercolor scratch maps from Waypoint Wanders are just the prettiest! I chose the blue and green-toned USA map for myself, and I love it! This is the perfect piece of wall art for your new travel themed office!
20. Prints & Artwork
Just like the gold watercolor scratch map above, these prints will no doubt ignite your wanderlust. They’re a fantastic way to decorate your office wall, a cork board, or a magnetic cubicle.
21. Lonely Planet Guidebooks
Stash a Lonely Planet guidebook (or 3) in your desk drawer. You can pull it out on your lunch break and plan your next holiday! This company makes the best guidebooks, brimming with a wealth of knowledge on where to stay, where to eat, and what to do. Plus, each guide has easy-to-navigate maps, incredibly helpful tips, and beneficial sections like currency conversions, local language phrases, and more!
22. Candy Dish & Foreign Candies
Everyone needs that midday pick-me-up, and usually it’s a snack or a little sugar boost. Grab a bag of foreign candy to leave on your desk in an international dish! This first dish is Moroccan ceramic, while the second is an engraved copper Turkish bowl. Personally, I’d fill mine up with matcha green tea kit kats! Japanese gummy candies are also pretty good.
For more office decor and design inspo, either travel-related or simply unique and stylish items, follow my Pinterest Home Office board ! I tend to gravitate toward natural objects (gemstones, wood, plants), colorful statement chairs, and rose gold everything. P repare to spend the next hour pinning.
Ok, which travel themed office item is the cheesiest? Vote in the comments!

I love this round up of office supplies. There is something about cute office supplies to brighten up the day. My favorites are the airplane paper clips and tape dispenser.
I love the airplane paper clips too! I’m for sure getting those for my home office!
These are so fun! I actually have a scratch-off map a friend sent me, which I sometimes forget about, because it’s not in a room I’m in often. I totally need some of those awesome sticky-notes though.
Right?! They’re so cool!
Omg – I need all of these for myself! LOL. Honestly I need those travel folders because I have so many piles of paper from all my travels that I am hoarding and need to organize haha. Saving this for ideas when I need to buy myself a gift ;)
Same! Hahaha. The entire time I was researching for cute supplies, I was just saving all of these items to my wish list.
Great list! Now I want to buy atleast 50% of it for me and the other 50% for my sisters office! :D
Hahahaha so sweet!
I’m in the process of buying a house and I neeeeeeeed all of this!!!
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! And I know, right?! I saved all of these ideas for myself too haha. I already have a few of these and now I need ALL of them.
I’m staring at the two globes I have in the middle of my work table as we speak. My favorite is enlarged versions of my own photos that adorn my office walls.
Yes! Using your own enlarged prints is a great idea!
All of these things look so fun! The Eiffel Tower scissors make me laugh. I’ll have to snag a pair and see how my students react. LOL.
Hahaha aren’t they cute?! I bet they’ll love them!

Minimalistic is the key word for achieving French-style decor. Although it “looks” expensive, we can totally fake it with these Amazon finds, right?
While it may seem difficult to create that crisp and effortless Parisian apartment aesthetic, it’s very simple. Find a few statement pieces like this gold mirror or white statue and complement them with smaller details.

The focal point of this Parisian interior design setup is the large gold mirror in the center. However, all the details surrounding are inspiring neutral prints and gold accents. Mix your favorite pops of color with other accessories to tie it all together.
6. French Style Vanity

Handmade Travel Home Decor: Home Decoration for Travelers
I love travel themed items and have previously written posts on some of my favorite handmade travel themed wedding products and travel themed jewelry . Just so you know, many of the home decor items on this list we physically reviewed. Some were items we purchased or received as gifts, and others were given to us by artists for review. The other pieces are just ones I loved when searching for travel themed home furnishings online.
The majority of the items on our list are handmade or hand customized items, made by a single artist, family, or a small business. We love supporting these great individual artists and small businesses.

MOVA Solar-Powered Globes
I am in love with the solar-powered globes from MOVA . We first spotted them spinning in a window display in a shop in Venice, Italy. We assumed they were spinning because of their base so were surprised when the shopkeeper put them in our hands and they kept spinning!
The globes spin on their own using solar power and magnets so they don’t need to be plugged in and there are no batteries to be changed. They just need light, either indirect light from the sun or indoor lights. They can also be put onto about any base.
In addition to world maps, they also sell ones depicting planets, the moon, artwork, and sports teams. They come in a variety of color schemes with several base options.
The companies sells their globes both on the MOVA website and on Amazon . Just be sure to buy them from an authorized site and register them once you receive them to benefit from the warranty.

Love all these items featured especially the lamps and cushions by Kelly Stevens-McLaughlan. If I were to pick one item out from all of these sellers, it would be the baby mobile

Yes, the handmade baby mobiles would be lovely in a nursery or young child’s room as decoration!

I love traveling as much as I love handmade products! So whenever I travel, I make sure that I get to purchase handcrafts especially those made by local community artisans. There is just one time, I went to Chiang Mai in Thailand, I never had the chance to actually buy my souvenir, but thankfully I found a store called localbazaar who sells handmade crafts from Chiang Mai!

Hi Ruth, Yes, handmade travel products make for great souvenirs. If you don’t pick up something while traveling, you can always seem to find something online out there 😉 Best, Jessica

I’ve always wanted to travel the world as a kid my dream job was to be a doctor overseas. I’m a bit sad that I’ve never ventured outside of the United States. My favorite is definitely the book safe! I’ve always wanted a hollow book. My mandatory entry I hit too soon it was 17, 15, and 7. Hope I can still be entered.
July 15, 2017 at 12:19 pm
Hi Maranda, It is never too late to travel (or do most things!) so don’t give up on your dream of doing some international travel! I will go in and manually change it for you so your entry is valid. Best, Jessica

This post is so much fun!!! We actually own 2 of these… the map pin boards (which we got one year for our girls) and the scratch off map (which my daughter got for my husband). We always had fun moving the pin to our “next planned destination.” My husband loves maps, and these are terrific gifts. I recently received coasters from a friend that have outlines of areas in the city where we both used to live. I loved it… these are perfect gifts for the traveler in your life!

Travel Themed Decor – 10 Design Styles From Around the World
The coronavirus pandemic obviously impacted our ability to pack our bags and go and explore different parts of the world. But, as we have slowly come out the other side, Britons are once again doing what they love to do best and boarding planes, trains, and automobiles to visit more places.
Indeed, UK residents took an estimated 71.8 million trips abroad in 2022 , 375 percent more than the year previous as travel restrictions began to lift.
Travel Themed Decor
Traveling is good for the soul. It can reduce the impact of stress and anxiety, provide a much-needed break from the daily grind of working life, broaden our horizons, and introduce us to new foods.
Travel decor is an interior design style that draws inspiration from different cultures and places around the world. This interior design style is all about bringing the essence of travel into your home, creating a space that reflects your wanderlust and love for exploration.
Travel themed decor can be achieved in a variety of ways, including incorporating elements such as souvenirs, artwork, textiles, and furniture that are inspired by different regions of the world.
You could display a Moroccan rug, an Indian tapestry, or a Japanese screen to create a travel-inspired vibe in your home.
Interior Design
Going on trips, whether a short jaunt, longer-term exploration, or maybe even on a honeymoon provides some of the most precious memories we will ever experience. For instance, staying in places like Sonesta hotels near Morrisville can offer unique decor insights that can be replicated in our homes.
So, it stands to reason that we would want some sort of reminder of our soul-soothing travels. For some, that might be putting up photos of the trip or displaying souvenirs bought from exploration.
But increasingly, traveling to new countries around the world is proving a great influence on the interior design styles of our homes.
Doing so not only provides a beautiful representation of the places you might have visited but using those memories and influences can be a great way to enrich your space and offer a sanctuary away from the stresses of modern life.
Designs From Around the World
For the more seasoned travelers, design inspirations might come more naturally. For those with limited travel experience or about to embark on new adventures maybe you’re not as sure of what to look out for to inspire you.
If you are going on tours of Europe , look out for design elements and perhaps even pieces that you could bring back with you. Below are 10 Travel Themed Decor Styles that you may come across and want to incorporate into your own home.
1. Scandinavian
Scandinavian design is a minimalist design movement that originated in the Nordic countries of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland. It is known for its simplicity, functionality, and timeless appeal.
Some key characteristics of Scandinavian design include:
- Clean lines: clean, simple lines that emphasize function and utility are key to this design style. There are no unnecessary embellishments or details, and the focus is on creating a streamlined, uncluttered look.
- Natural materials: Scandinavian design often incorporates natural materials like wood, leather, and wool. These materials provide warmth and texture to the space and help to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
- Light color palette: whites, greys, and muted tones are predominant in Scandinavian design. This helps to create a bright and airy feel in the space and also allows other design elements to stand out.
- Minimalism: Scandinavian design embraces a minimalist aesthetic, with a focus on functionality and simplicity. This means that everything in the space should serve a purpose, and there should be no excess or unnecessary items.
- Functional furniture: functional and practical, furniture is designed to be both aesthetically pleasing and useful. This often means that it is often multifunctional, with storage solutions built in.
- Hygge: Hygge (pronounced “hoo-ga”) is a Danish concept that refers to a feeling of coziness, comfort, and contentment. Scandinavian design often incorporates elements of hygge, with soft textiles, warm lighting, and cozy seating areas that invite relaxation and comfort.
Look for authentic Scandinavian souvenirs, such as handcrafted wooden bowls, ceramic vases, or woolen blankets.
These pieces will not only add a touch of Nordic design to your home but also serve as a reminder of your travels and can contribute towards your travel inspired decor.
Japandi is an interior design style that takes the best elements of Japanese and Scandinavian styles , offering a calming and relaxing aesthetic. Furniture is placed low to the ground and uncluttered with muted colors, while lighting fixtures also follow the idea of minimalism.
Japandi design also incorporates elements of wabi-sabi, a Japanese aesthetic that celebrates imperfection, impermanence, and authenticity. This means that materials and objects with a natural, handmade, or rustic quality are favored over mass-produced or perfect items.
Japandi decor is usually uplifted with plants to add some greenery and embrace the theme of nature. This can include potted plants, small Bonsai trees, or even a small zen garden.
Overall, Japandi design is characterized by a harmonious blend of Japanese and Scandinavian design elements, with an emphasis on simplicity, natural materials, and functional design. It is a design style that promotes a sense of calm, tranquillity, and authenticity, and can create a beautiful and serene living space.
Japandi interior design styles can often be found in hotel foyers and restaurant design, so incorporating this style into your home can easily create travel themed decor.
3. Bohemian
While still taking on influences of nature, Bohemian interior design styles are more eccentric at heart, with a love of vibrancy from colors, patterns, and textured layers meshed together with unique furniture.
Bohemian design is a free-spirited style that incorporates elements of different cultures and eras to create a unique and eclectic look. It is characterized by a sense of individuality, creativity, and a relaxed, carefree attitude.
To me, it is the perfect travel inspired decor style as it encourages you to display and integrate all the souvenirs and items you have picked up from traveling, each telling its own story.
Decorative items are what bring this design to life, with wall hangings, handcrafted artwork, and woven rugs. You can use this design in the home and create a boho look in your garden .
To bring this style to life, simply –
- Layer textures such as wool, silk, cotton, and linen to create a tactile look.
- Use bold and vibrant colors, such as jewel, earthy, and bright hues together.
- Mix patterns such as floral, paisley, and tribal prints to create a dynamic and eclectic look.
- Bohemian design often incorporates vintage and antique pieces, such as distressed furniture or vintage textiles. These pieces add a sense of history and character to the space.
- Incorporate natural materials, such as wood, stone, and plants, to create a sense of earthiness and connection to nature.
- Bohemian design incorporates elements from different cultures and countries, such as Moroccan lamps, Indian textiles, or African masks, to create a worldly and eclectic look.
- Display your artwork on a gallery wall . This could include artwork you’ve picked up on your travels or pictures of your favorite destinations from around the world.
The beauty of a bohemian interior design style is that it really allows you to embrace your individuality and creativity and can easily inspire you to create travel inspired decor.
We lived in Saudi Arabia for a few years and I would say Arabian home design is not too dissimilar from bohemian design.
Arabian home design is a way to bring a more regal, luxurious, and elegant look to your home by embracing bold colors and textures, and materials such as velvet settees, wood tables, and glass decor to bring sitting rooms and bedrooms to life.
Mosaic patterns are a regular theme on rugs, curtains, and wallpapers in Arabian interiors. These patterns tend to include stars, squares, hexagons, or repeating shapes.
Ornate details such as intricate carvings, mosaics, and calligraphy often feature arabesque motifs, which are complex patterns of intertwined foliage and tendrils.
Lighting is an important element in Arabian design, with a focus on creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. This can include the use of lamps, lanterns, and candles to create a soft, diffused light.
The warm lighting is perfect with the rich and warm color palette they prefer, including shades of red, purple, gold, blue, and green.
Taking inspiration again from nature, African interior is about using natural shapes, textures, and finishes. An exotic interior design style that uses rich, warm colors such as burgundy, burnt orange, and deep brown earth, in contrast to soft beige, cream, or white painted walls.
African design is a diverse style that draws inspiration from the many different cultures and regions of the African continent. It is characterized by a rich and vibrant aesthetic that celebrates African art, culture, and heritage.
African design often incorporates natural materials, such as wood, stone, and clay, to create a sense of earthiness and connection to the natural world. These materials are often used in decorative elements, such as masks and sculptures.
It also draws inspiration from the many different tribal cultures of the continent. This can include incorporating traditional clothing and jewelry, as well as patterns and motifs inspired by tribal art.
Elements, such as woven baskets, pottery, and carvings are key interior design styles on the African continent. These pieces add a sense of authenticity and connection to the cultural heritage of the region.
Animal motifs also play a huge part in African design with zebras, giraffes, and elephant prints often used in decor to celebrate the rich wildlife of the continent.
6. Art Deco
1920s French art and design are the inspiration behind this design, which looks to use sleek, metallic finishes such as chrome, glass, and stainless steel.
Furniture tends to use jagged, pointed edges, and decorative pieces are typically larger with generous-sized chairs, dresses and couches all hallmarks of the 1920s.
The key characteristics of Art Deco interior design styles include:
- Geometric shapes such as triangles, rectangles, and circles
- Black, gold, silver, and deep jewel tones like emerald green, ruby red, and sapphire blue
- Sleek lines, curves, and symmetry
- Marble, chrome, and lacquer to create a sense of glamour and opulence
- Decorative motifs such as zigzags, sunbursts, and chevrons
- Machine-inspired elements (such as airplanes and automobiles) in furniture and decor
- Exotic influences including Egyptian motifs, tribal patterns, and Japanese lacquerware
7. Beach-themed decor
For the beach dwellers among you, beach-themed decor or coastal boho decor is probably more your vibe as it uses a light and airy feel to take you back to a time when you were laid on the sand with the noise of crashing waves to relax you.
Sky blue, beige, and crisp white colors are used to give that coastal feel, while weathered wood and sea glass are common in beach decor. Coastal-themed decor can include seashells, starfish, sand, and tropical plants which can all be incorporated in subtle ways such as artwork, throw pillows, or table centerpieces.
Beach-themed decor often incorporates outdoor living spaces, such as decks, patios, or balconies, to take advantage of the beautiful coastal views and ocean breezes.
If you don’t have a sea view, create your own beach vibe with casual furnishings such as overstuffed sofas, cozy armchairs, and hanging chairs. Don’t forget to add nautical accents such as navy blue and white stripes, rope accents, and sailboat decor.
8. Mexican Decor
Mexican interior design styles are vibrant and colorful styles that are influenced by the country’s rich cultural heritage and history. It is characterized by bold patterns, bright colors, and intricate details.
Vibrant colors, such as reds, yellows, blues, and greens are often used in combination to create a lively and energetic atmosphere. And don’t forget the cacti!
Mexican design incorporates folk art elements, such as papel picado (cut paper banners) and alebrijes (colorful hand-carved animal figures), to celebrate the country’s vibrant artistic traditions.
It is also known for its intricate tile work, often used in decorative elements such as backsplashes, countertops, and flooring. These tiles feature bold colors and patterns, adding a sense of drama and excitement to the space.
9. Moroccan Design
Moroccan design is not too dissimilar to Mexico with its intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and ornate details. Spain had a lot of influence over Moroccan architecture and this architectural style, referred to as ‘colonial style’, was brought to Mexico by the Spanish.
Both Mexico and Morrocco embraced Spanish architecture and mixed it with their own indigenous styles, hence the reason there are similarities between Moroccan and Mexican design.
Moroccan interior design styles feature a rich and vibrant color palette, with colors such as blues, greens, and oranges often used in combination with reds, yellows, and golds. These colors are often bold and dramatic, creating a sense of energy and vibrancy in the space.
However, Morocco still holds on to its Arabian heritage and features a lot of ornate details, such as carvings, mosaics, and metalwork.
It is probably most famous for its booming textile industry with bold colors and intricate patterns taking center stage and traditional techniques, such as weaving and embroidery still used to create rugs, pillows, throws, and tapestries.
10. Australian Design
Australian interior design styles are influenced by the country’s unique geography, diverse culture, and natural beauty. It is characterized by a relaxed and informal aesthetic that emphasizes a connection to the outdoors. It is more than just beach themed decor!
The key to Australian design is indoor/outdoor living. It has a relaxed and informal feel, with an emphasis on comfort and livability. This can be seen in the use of comfortable furnishings, such as overstuffed sofas and armchairs, and the incorporation of casual decorative elements, such as woven baskets and pottery.
Large windows, balconies, and verandas play a key role in Australian design. They allow for a seamless flow between the interior and exterior of the home.
Interiors often feature a neutral color palette, with shades of beige, white, and grey being popular. These colors reflect the country’s natural landscape and allow the focus to be on the textures and materials used in the space.
Finally, Australian design celebrates the country’s rich art and cultural traditions, often incorporating Aboriginal art and motifs, as well as contemporary Australian artists and designers. If you’re looking for travel themed decor in your home that incorporates indoor/outdoor living, Australian design is just the thing!
How to Incorporate Different Designs Into Your Own Interior
Remember, there is no one right way to decorate your home using travel as your inspiration, nor does your whole interior need to be inspired by the same country or region.
Give it an authentic feel, it can be easy to fall into the pitfalls of your designs and furniture feeling tacky and cheesy. Nor should you overdo it, use the design as inspiration, not something that will throw it in the face of visitors.
Create your own personal style. Don’t get bogged down by thinking a particular piece of art or furniture doesn’t fit an overall theme, after all this is YOUR design so be yourself.
Incorporating travel-themed decor in your home can be a wonderful way to bring the world into your living space and create a unique and personalized atmosphere. By drawing inspiration from different design styles from around the world, you can create a space that reflects your own interests and experiences, and that tells a story about your life and the places you have been.

The Very Best Things We Spotted at Milan Design Week 2024
From futuristic inflatables to topsy-turvy office furniture, here are just a few of the things that we’re obsessing over at design’s biggest party.
Delcourt Collection’s “Horses in My Dreams” Exhibition
One of my favorite things about coming to Europe for the furniture fairs is finding smaller scale work that’s perfect for apartment living. “Horses in My Dreams,” an exhibition of 15 new pieces from Delcourt Collection , stuck with me for offering the exact opposite. Visitors were greeted by a colossal cabinet that could, in a pinch, double as housing itself, and turned the corner to find an outsize pendant light hanging over a table occupying the square footage of a city-friendly terrace, all exquisitely hand-finished. An extensive range of fabrics is all done in-house as well and appeared on upholstered seating and a bed. My favorite was used on a series of folding screens that featured a pattern designed by founder Christophe Delcourt’s daughter, Iris. — Sean Santiago, deputy editor
Korean Craft at Rossana Orlandi
Curator Jooyeon Choi has created one of the most beautiful exhibitions at Milan Design Week, “Thoughts on Thickness,” focusing on Korean craft. The show is an exploration of materiality, from the resin wall sculptures of Yongkyoung Kim to Sekyung Lee’s surprising plates with elaborate designs made of human hair. A highlight is a pavilion devoted to tea, which features a wall-size folded paper landscape mural by Changwon Lee that cascades with tea leaves, infusing the room with their intoxicating scent. — Ingrid Abramovitch, executive editor
Allegra Hicks’s Metamorphosis Collection
Designer Allegra Hicks showed “Metamorphosis” at Nilufar Depot, an exhibition of six pieces that cleverly showcased her own crochet work by using it as a mold for cast-bronze lighting fixtures and tables. The idea was to connect what has historically been women’s work with the more masculine art of metalsmithing. While it’s a technique that can be seen in much of Hicks’s work, the sconces on view begged a second look. – S.S.
Ikea’s Pop-Up Dance Party
No surprise, the king of flatpack furniture knows how to throw a helluva pop-up. At Padiglione Visconti—a sprawling warehouse where sets and costumes for the Teatro alla Scala opera house are made—Ikea presented 1st, an installation that celebrates all the emotions that come with creating your first home. In addition to a labyrinth of vignettes celebrating Ikea’s latest launches (this fall, you can anticipate a collection of actually chic gaming furniture, plus updated versions of the Poäng chair and Klippon sofa), the venue featured a towering stack of scaffolding supporting a stage for discussions with various design luminaries (think Google’s Ivy Ross and Rossana Hu of the architect duo Neri&Hu). Come nightfall, however, the place transforms into a massive club with free performances from some of the hottest local artists in Milan, from hip-hop to Italo disco. Programming runs through Saturday, so if you’re still in town, pop on by and be prepared to get a little loose. —Anna Fixsen, deputy digital editor
Nifemi Marcus Bello’s Omi Iyo Collection
Designer and artist Nifemi Marcus-Bello has steadily been gaining attention for his sensitive, smart designs for domestic life, almost all of them made in his native Nigeria. For Milan Design Week, he brings back the poetic installation Omi Iyọ, which debuted during Miami Design Week last year and is now on view at the 5VIE space in Milan. Omi Iyọ , which came out of an encounter with an African refugee in Venice two years ago, is a living sculpture with a central shiplike form made of mirror-polished stainless steel. As viewers look on, locally sourced salt from Italy pours slowly from its center onto the platform below. Like a haunting hourglass of high design, it serves as a metaphor for the lives lost at sea in forced displacement, poignant in its first location in Miami and just as much so here in Milan. — Camille Okhio, senior design writer
Objects of Common Interest at Alcova
The ever active duo behind Objects of Common Interest , Eleni Petaloti and Leonidas Trampoukis are up to their necks in Milan-based design interventions this week. At Alcova, where they showed an outdoor inflatable fountain last year, their pavilion, or “garden house”—also inflatable—lends itself to the leisure of this year’s visitors. Like a bombolono split in half, it’s a much needed dose of levity and hilarity in what for many is the most hectic week of the year. If you’re in the mood for something more stable, there’s always the ceramics they designed with Bitossi Ceramiche, also at Alcova. And if you, like us, can’t get enough of these geniuses, they’ve installed an eggplant-hued room for retiring, Purple Nebula, inspired by celestial phenomena at Nilufar Depot that’s very much worth a stop in. —C.O.
Andromeda Collection by LSM Studio
Unifor, part of the Molteni Group, is known for designing chic, elevated office furniture, but its latest collection is so elegant, it can easily be used in residential contexts as well. Designed by longtime collaborators LSM Studio, the line includes a series of small side tables, a sideboard, a long table, seating and more. Seamlessly blending aluminum, chrome, and glass, each piece beautifully reflects its surrounding environment—an exercise in seamlessly blending open space with elegant design. The cherry on top was the installation at the brand’s showroom, executed by Studio Klass, which, outside, sets each piece on a tilted, circular platform. It emulates the Andromeda Theatre in central Italy, where Klass staged and photographed the pieces for Unifor, further demonstrating the collection’s versatility and impact. — Helena Madden, market editor
WKND Lab’s Knotted Creations at Alcova
At Alcova, Seoul-based design duo Eunji Jun and Halin Lee of WKND Lab offered a literal twist on an ancient tradition: Korean knot-making, or maedeup. These elaborately-tied objects are traditionally gifted as good luck charms. In WKND Lab’s interpretation, however, these braided tokens have been reinterpreted as soft, beautifully complex wall sconces, accessories, and even furniture, all braided from puffy cloth ropes. Jun and Lee describe their work as “functional art with material-driven narratives”—and this was one story we were thrilled to experience. —A.F.
Foscarini’s Habitus Lighting
Italian lighting has a long history of combining technology with handmade craft. For an exquisite installation at the Milan showroom of Foscarini, artist and designer Andrea Anastasio teamed up with Amal, an India and Rome-based firm specializing in embroidery for haute couture, to create a small capsule collection that feels like an art show. Anastasio designed lighting that combines LED with beading made by skilled artisans in India. Some pieces combine glass beads, aluminum and LEDs in a series with echoes of artist Dan Flavin. Another group veils LEDs under strings of colorful beads with black centers for an effect reminiscent of an eclipse. Foscarini calls the grouping “experimental” (translation: not for sale), but here’s hoping the company will see the light and put them into production. —I.A.
Squash Collection by Faye Toogood
Got curves? Poltrona Frau collaborated with British designer Faye Toogood for the first time this year, debuting a plump, playful collection at its sprawling showroom on Via Alessandro Manzoni. Offerings include an ottoman, side table, mirror, and rug, but it’s the voluptuous armchair that has us most excited. Its rounded silhouette feels almost like a contemporary take on Frau’s iconic Vanity Fair seat—further evidence of the brand’s continued relevance, even decades later. —H.M.
Limbo Accra at Alcova
True to its name, Limbo Accra is adept at inhabiting the in between. For its first presentation at Alcova, the Amsterdam and Ghana based design studio released an edition of 10 lacquered wood Euclid Stools. A meeting of East and West, past and present, the stool takes its name from Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy and acts as a symbol of the space a soul takes on its journey to the afterlife. It is transmorphic, appearing as an A-frame structure on one side, and on the other recalling the Savonarola chair, itself pregnant with meaning as the victim of the Inquisition it was named after. —C.O.
