Great Ocean Road & Kangaroo Island Escape (Travel Period: 01 Apr 2024 – 31 Mar 2025)

great ocean road and kangaroo island tours

Day 1 Melbourne - Warrnambool

Tour Melbourne Image

You’re on your way to the Great Ocean Road, a snaking coastal route that is one of the world’s most epic journeys. Across a dramatic 240 kilometres you’ll take in limestone stacks like the Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge and London Bridge. Then traverse World Heritage listed rainforest, skirting untouched coastal coves, and passing through sleepy towns like Lorne and Apollo Bay, where bare feet and boardshorts are the dress code. Get together with your fellow travellers for a Welcome Dinner tonight.

Day 2 Warrnambool - Naracoorte

Emus and koalas... oh my! These are just a couple of the animals you'll likely spot as you drive through Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve, housed in a dormant volcanic crater. Remarkably, this pocket of paradise was once wasteland, transformed by volunteers. More volcanic history awaits across the South Australian border in Mt. Gambier, home to the crater-filling Blue Lake. Bring your sunglasses, because the lake’s name doesn’t do it justice – the intensity of the hue is blinding. By now you’ll be pretty thirsty, so it’s a good thing the Coonawarra wine region is around the corner. Fancy a world-class cab sav, shiraz or merlot? You’ve come to the right place. Your final adventure is deep, in every sense of the word. Naracoorte’s Alexandra Cave is a maze of delicate needle-like stalactites and massive twisting columns.

Day 3 Naracoorte - Kangaroo Island

Nature rules large again today as you weave along the Fleurieu Peninsula to Victor Harbor. After rolling hills, sandy beaches and rugged cliffs, you’re greeted with the charms of this seaside town – the gateway to Kangaroo Island. All aboard the ferry for your journey toward this ‘mini Galapagos’. Kangaroo Island deserves its moniker, as you’ll discover tomorrow, but for the rest of the day, all you need to do is relax at your hotel in Kingscote, or perhaps take a stroll along the picturesque waters edge.

Day 4 Kangaroo Island

First stop today truly deserves its name: the orange-lichen-clad Remarkable Rocks command your attention over the blazing blue of the Southern Ocean. Then there’s Admirals Arch, home to an immense colony of raucous fur seals and a very photogenic lighthouse. Like much of the island, Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary was badly damaged by the 2019 bushfires. Through this MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience, you’ll assist with their bushfire recovery plan and wildlife rehabilitation program. Learn from one of their experienced guides about the delicate ecosystem and Australian native animals. More wildlife greets you at Seal Bay Conservation Park. Here, on a MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience you’ll visit one of the country’s most important sea lion breeding grounds. On a guided walk, you’ll learn about these creatures - one of the rarest species in the world of only 12,000, 800 of which call Seal Bay home. Move aside: enormous sea lions regularly barrel down the sand toward the water. Finish today’s adventure with a tasting of craft beers at Kangaroo Island’s only brewery. How does a Pale Ale sound?

Day 5 Kangaroo Island - Adelaide

On your cruise back to the mainland, picture some of the culinary opportunities that await you in the South Australian capital. Adelaide is known as the 'city of churches' but we think a more apt title is the 'city of cuisine'. After a city tour, the afternoon is yours to see just how many restaurants and bars you can sample. Want recommendations? We might point you in the direction of the epic Central Market, the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere with more than 70 stalls selling artisan edibles (and drinkables).

Day 6 Adelaide Hills and the Barossa

Pull on your elastic-waisted pants – today is one of indulgences through the Adelaide Hills and the Barossa, dotted with atmospheric towns like Hahndorf, Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement. A Barossa and Hahndorf tour reveals the bountiful food and wine this pocket of the state is known for. And you’ll enjoy a wine tasting at Wolf Blass as well as discovering local flavours over lunch at Lambert Estate, nestled in rolling hills enveloped by vines. Return to Adelaide through landscape dotted with stone cottages and olive groves and join your Travel Director for a Farewell Dinner at Koomo, Adelaide’s highest restaurant, for a Japanese inspired feast.

Day 7 Farewell from Adelaide

A week in this part of the world really isn't enough. We hope we've inspired you to come back for another taste.

Please note: This itinerary may be subject to change.

Warrnambool

Warrnambool is a city along the Great Ocean Road, in Victoria, Australia. Its main beach, the sandy Bathing Beach, runs in front of vast Lake Pertobe Adventure Park. The nearby Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village explores the area’s seafaring history through a large shipwreck collection. Thunder Point Coastal Reserve, with its rocky ocean scenery, encompasses Shelly Beach.  The coast around Warrnambool and down to Cape Otway is known as the Shipwreck Coast, due to the large number of water vessels that ran aground in the 1800s and early 1900s due to ferocious weather conditions and the rocky coastline.  These days, Warrnambool is a popular tourist destination with an extensive commercial centre, separated from the ocean by coastal reserves and parkland. Historic buildings within the city centre include the post office (built in 1870), courthouse (1871) and Western Hotel (1869).

The  limestone stacks of the Twelve Apostles ris e majestically from the wild Southern Ocean .  Rising out of the Southern Ocean, alongside Australia’s famous Great Ocean Road, you’ll find the 12 Apostles – limestone pillars that were once connected to the mainland cliffs. Waves and wind carved them into caves, then arches, and eventually battered them down into 45-metre (150-foot) tall columns. There are, in fact, only eight Apostles at the moment , but who knows when the next stretches of cliff will become pillars.

South Australian Company Store

In the Barossa Valley stop for lunch at the South Australian Company Store where you’ll try tempting canapés made up of fresh local produce, followed by a delicious main meal of your choice.   Located in South Australia’s famous Barossa Valley just one hour north of Adelaide , The Company Kitchen offers the best food and coffee in the region. Located on Valley Road in Angaston at the site of the original “Gawler Park Glace Fruit Company”.   The building was originally two army barracks, which the Thorn family purchased from Woodside approximately 60 years ago and joined together for staff lunch rooms and offices. (You can even see iron marks burnt into the floor from where the soldiers ironed their uniforms).   The building has been completely refurbished using wood and other items that have been salvaged so that the look and feel of the store is warm and inviting. The original jarrah floorboards are still in the store as are the windows. The Company Kitchen features an old “ Linke’s ” butcher counter that is over 100 years old.   Executive Head Chef Chris Wilksch has a passion for the locally produced food products and believes South Australia has the best products available, especially those which have their beginnings derived from the local settlers heritage.

Seppeltsfield

V isit the Barossa Valley’s famous Seppeltsfield for an indulgent wine tasting .   Located on the ‘Western Ridge’ of the Barossa Valley , Seppeltsfield combines over 420 acres of ancient vineyard, gardens and heritage-listed architecture.   The Seppeltsfield estate is surrounded by a small settlement – named Seppeltsfield itself – and joins the nearby districts of Greenock and Marananga as the most Westerly townships of the Barossa Valley. Here, gently rolling hills of patchwork vineyards are contrasted against open fields of cereal crops, making for some of the most picturesque landscapes to be found in the region.   A suggestion of the grandeur of the Seppeltsfield property itself is evident through over 2000 Canary Island Date Palms, which line the approaching roads as an avenue to the estate.   Upon arrival, a vibrant Barossa community of wine, food, art and beauty awaits, highlighted by Seppeltsfield’s world class cellar door & tasting rooms, FINO Restaurant, Octeine Coffee, JamFactory Contemporary Art & Design studios and Vasse Virgin Skin care.

Great Ocean Road & Kangaroo Island Escape

AATKings logo

Melbourne, Warrnambool, Naracoorte, Kangaroo Island, Adelaide

This trip could also be known as ‘Southern Australia, as seen through its wine and wilderness’. And a few other culinary (and scenic) treats. From a Melbourne to the Great Ocean Road tour, to tasty Kangaroo Island and Barossa tours, expect a top-notch roll-call of attractions across Victoria and South Australia.

great ocean road and kangaroo island tours

Today you’re on your way to the Great Ocean Road, a snaking coastal route that is one of the world’s most epic journeys. Across a dramatic 240 kilometres you’ll take in limestone stacks like the Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge and London Bridge. Then traverse through World Heritage listed rainforest, skirting untouched coastal coves, and passing through sleepy towns like Lorne and Apollo Bay, where bare feet and boardshorts are the dress code. Get together with your fellow travellers for a Welcome Dinner tonight.

Emus, kangaroos, koalas, echidnas... oh my! These are just some of the animals you'll likely spot as you drive through Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve, housed in a dormant volcanic crater.

Kangaroo Island deserves its moniker, as you’ll discover tomorrow, but for the rest of the day, all you need to do is relax at your hotel in Kingscote, South Australia’s oldest European settlement, or perhaps take a stroll along the picturesque waters edge.

Through your MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience, you’ll assist with their bushfire recovery plan and wildlife rehabilitation program. How does a Limestone Road Pale Ale sound?

On your cruise back to the mainland, picture some of the culinary opportunities that await you in the South Australian capital. Adelaide is known as the 'city of churches' but we think a more apt title is the 'city of cuisine'. After a city tour, the afternoon is yours to see just how many restaurants and bars you can sample. Want recommendations? We might point you in the direction of the epic Central Market, the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere with more than 70 stalls selling artisan edibles (and drinkables).

Now that you have a taste for South Australian produce, take a deep dive on today’s adventure through the Adelaide Hills and the Barossa, dotted with atmospheric towns like Hahndorf, Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement. Wander down its tree-lined streets and take time to explore the quaint shops. Wining and dining dominate the landscape, with some of the country’s oldest grape vines planted across this pocket of the state. Discover local flavours at a wine tasting at Wolf Blass and over lunch at Lambert Estate, nestled in rolling hills enveloped by vines. Return to Adelaide and join your Travel Director for a Farewell Dinner at Koomo, Adelaide’s highest restaurant, for a Japanese inspired feast.

A week in this part of the world really isn't enough. We hope we've inspired you to come back for another taste.

We have many travellers jumping onboard our tours by themselves. Those travelling by themselves are very much welcomed and encouraged. During your outback adventure you'll meet new and interesting people and forge relationships that will last a life time.

Those who do travel by themselves will probably be sharing a room with a travelling companion of the same sex, but even if you do get your own room, you won't be charged extra. For camping tours, generally there are enough tents available that you can have your own if you choose to.

Some tours however have a restriction on children under the age of 16 - 18. This will depend on the destination so please email us for more info.

Do I need to be able to swim?

Not really. The centre of Australia is quite dry and there is very few places where we are allowed to swim. However, for tours heading upwards towards Darwin there may be areas for swimming. If you aren't able to swim then you don't need to go into the water. In many cases there may be shallow areas when you can still get wet without having to actually swim. 12Apostles, Great Ocean Road

Day 1 – Melbourne to Warrnambool

You’re on your way to the Great Ocean Road, a snaking coastal route that is one of the world’s most epic journeys. Across a dramatic 240 kilometres you’ll take in limestone stacks like the Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge and London Bridge. Then traverse through World Heritage listed rainforest, skirting untouched coastal coves, and pausing in sleepy towns like Lorne and Apollo Bay, where bare feet and boardshorts are the dress code. Get together with your fellow travellers for a Welcome Dinner.

Lady Bay Resort

Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve, Australia

Day 2 – Warrnambool to Naracoorte

Emus, kangaroos, koalas, echidnas… oh my! These are just some of the animals you’ll likely spot as you drive through Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve, housed in a dormant volcanic crater.

William MacIntosh Motor Lodge, Naracoorte

Sea Dragon Lodge, Kangaroo Island

Day 3 – Naracoorte to Kangaroo Island

Nature rules large again today as you weave along the Fleurieu Peninsula to Victor Harbor. After rolling hills, sandy beaches and rugged cliffs, you’re greeted with the charms of this seaside town – the gateway to Kangaroo Island. All aboard the ferry for your journey toward this ‘mini Galapagos’. Kangaroo Island deserves its moniker, as you’ll discover tomorrow. But today, all you have to do is ease into the island with a tasting of craft beers at Kangaroo Island’s only brewery. How does a Limestone Road Pale Ale sound?

Aurora Ozone Hotel, Executive Rooms

Kangaroo Island, South Australia

Day 4 – Kangaroo Island

First stop today truly deserves its name: the orange-lichen-clad Remarkable Rocks command your attention over the blazing blue of the Southern Ocean. Then there’s Admirals Arch, home to an immense colony of raucous fur seals and a very photogenic lighthouse. Like much of the island, Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary was badly damaged by the 2019 bushfires. Your visit will assist with their bushfire recovery plan and wildlife rehabilitation program. Learn from one of their experienced guides about the delicate ecosystem and Australian native animals. More wildlife greets you at Seal Bay Conservation Park, where you’ll visit one of the country’s most important sea lion breeding grounds. On a guided walk, you’ll learn about these creatures – one of the rarest species in the world of only 12,000, 800 of which call Seal Bay home. Move aside: enormous sea lions regularly barrel down the sand toward the water.

Mount Lofty Botanic Garden, Adelaide Hills

Day 5 – Kangaroo Island to Adelaide

On your cruise back to the mainland, picture some of the culinary opportunities that await you in the South Australian capital. Adelaide is known as the ‘city of churches’ but we think a more apt title is the ‘city of cuisine’. After a cultural walking tour through the city’s Botanic Garden with an Aboriginal Guide, and an Adelaide city tour, the afternoon is yours to see just how many restaurants and bars you can sample. Want recommendations? We might point you in the direction of the epic Central Market, the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere with more than 70 stalls selling artisan edibles (and drinkables).

Crowne Plaza Adelaide

Barossa Valley, South Australia

Day 6 – Adelaide Hills & The Barossa

Now that you have a taste for South Australian produce, take a deep dive on today’s adventure through the Adelaide Hills and the Barossa, dotted with atmospheric towns like Hahndorf, Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement. Wander down its tree-lined streets and take time to explore the quaint shops. Wining and dining dominate the landscape, with some of the country’s oldest grape vines planted across this pocket of the state. Discover local flavours over lunch at Lambert Estate, nestled in rolling hills enveloped by vines. Return to Adelaide and join your Travel Director for a Farewell Dinner at Koomo, Adelaide’s highest restaurant, for a Japanese inspired feast.

River Torrens, Adelaide

Day 7 – Farewell from Adelaide

A week in this part of the world really isn’t enough. We hope we’ve inspired you to come back for another taste.

great ocean road and kangaroo island tours

Itinerary Details

FIRST-CLASS | ESCORTED COACH TOUR: Enjoy seven days touring some of the best of Southern Australia. Discover the Great Ocean Road before visits to Coonawarra and Adelaide followed by the unique wildlife of Kangaroo Island.

Grand Southern Discovery

See the best of Australia’s southern states in style, with stops in up to 4 capital cities on a fully escorted 5, 7 or 11 day itinerary.

Consider arriving a few days early to explore Sydney, Australia’s most diverse and iconic city, before departing for Canberra. A purpose-built national capital, Canberra is packed with sights including Parliament House and the Australian War Memorial. You’ll visit both on an afternoon tour, after a delicious BBQ lunch at a working sheep farm. At the nearby Snowy Mountains, ride the chairlift up Mt Kosciuszko, Australia’s highest peak.

Cross the border into Victoria for an overnight stay and tour of historic Beechworth, the state’s best preserved gold rush town. Walk in the footsteps of notorious bushranger Ned Kelly on your way to Melbourne, Australia’s cultural, shopping and sporting capital. We bid farewell to our guests on the 5 day itinerary here.

A full day in Melbourne gives you time to experience this world class city your way. Culture vultures might enjoy a visit to Melbourne Museum (the Southern Hemisphere’s largest), or the National Gallery of Victoria. Consider a twilight excursion to Phillip Island in time for the famous ‘little penguin parade’. Immerse yourself in history, panning for gold at Sovereign Hill. Or spend the day shopping in the central business district, enjoying the intimate laneways and chic cafes of Australia’s most European city.

Guests on the 7 day itinerary join in time for one of Australia’s most spectacular drives, the Great Ocean Road. See famous landmarks including the Twelve Apostles, London Bridge and Loch Ard Gorge, all formed by centuries of erosion from the wild Southern Ocean. Learn more about the local Aboriginal culture at Worn Gundidi, including insights into medicine in the bush.

Enter South Australia, with a stop in picturesque Mt Gambier before you reach Adelaide. This mid sized capital is a major cultural centre and hosts numerous festivals throughout the year including the renowned Adelaide Cabaret Festival. It’s also the ideal jump-off point for an excursion to Kangaroo Island, a living gallery of natural wonders sometimes referred to as Australia’s Galapagos. Visit the famous sea lions of Seal Bay and see fascinating geological sights such as Admiral’s Arch.

Melbourne to warrnambool.

Want an adventure that starts with a bang? This is it. We advise arriving early for a Melbourne laneway tour, taking in the city’s eye-popping alleys filled with colourful art. Then you’re on your way from Melbourne on a Great Ocean Road tour, enjoying a snaking coastal route that is one of the world’s most epic journeys. Across a dramatic 240 kilometers you’ll take in limestone stacks like the Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge and London Bridge. Then traverse through World Heritage listed rainforest, skirting untouched coastal coves, and pausing in sleepy towns like Lorne and Apollo Bay, where bare feet and boardshorts are the dress code. We wouldn’t blame you for following suit… Accommodation: Deep Blue Hotel & Hot Springs

Warrnambool to Naracoorte

Emus, kangaroos, koalas, echidnas… oh my! These are just some of the animals you’ll likely spot as you drive through Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve – housed in a dormant volcanic crater. Remarkably, this pocket of paradise was once wasteland, transformed by volunteers. More volcanic history awaits across the South Australian border in Mt. Gambier, home to the crater-filling Blue Lake. Because it’s very blue. And it’s a lake. By now you’ll be pretty thirsty, so it’s a good thing the Coonawarra wine region is around the corner. After a few sips, you may find yourself getting deep – literally. Naracoorte’s Alexandra Cave is a maze of delicate needle-like stalactites and massive twisting columns. Accommodation: William MacIntosh Motor Lodge

Naracoorte to Kangaroo Island

Victor Harbor. After rolling hills, sandy beaches and rugged cliffs, you’re greeted with the charms of this seaside town – the gateway to Kangaroo Island. Fun fact: it still has a steam train. But you’re boarding the ferry for your journey toward Australia’s ‘mini Galapagos’ to tour Kangaroo Island. Kangaroo Island deserves its moniker, as you’ll discover tomorrow. But today, a well-deserved tasting of craft beer awaits at a boutique brewery, the only one on the island. How does Indian Pale Ale sound or a Mexican inspired brew made using a combination of malted barley and flaked rice? Accommodation: Aurora Ozone Hotel

  • Kangaroo Island

First stop on your tour of Kangaroo Island truly deserves its name: the orange-lichen-clad Remarkable Rocks command your attention over the blazing blue of the Southern Ocean. Then there’s Admirals Arch, home to an immense colony of raucous fur seals and a very photogenic lighthouse. Like much of the island, AAT Kings-sponsored Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary was badly damaged by the 2019 bushfires. On your visit, you’ll discover the role that fire plays within this delicate ecosystem, and how koalas, kangaroos, echidnas and other wildlife have adapted to their environment. More wildlife greets you at Seal Bay Conservation Park. Move aside: enormous sea lions regularly barrel down the sand toward the water, and you’ll learn about their habitat on a Kangaroo Island tour of the beach.

Kangaroo Island to Adelaide

You’ve arrived in the South Australian capital, known for its well-preserved churches and well-admired cuisine. Did you know that Adelaide boasts more restaurants per capita than any other city in Australia? After a cultural walking tour through the city’s Botanic Gardens with an Aboriginal Guide, and an Adelaide city tour, the afternoon is yours to see just how many you can sample – we have a few recommendations, including a visit to the epic Central Market, where you can try green ant gin with cheese, among so many other delicacies. Accommodation: Crowne Plaza Adelaide

Adelaide Hills and the Barossa

Pull on your elastic-waisted pants – today is one of indulgences through the Adelaide Hills and the Barossa, dotted with atmospheric towns like Hahndorf, Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement. A Barossa and Hahndorf tour reveals the bountiful food and wine this pocket of the state is known for. And you’ll enjoy a tasting from small batch wine makers from across the valley as well as discovering local flavours over lunch at Lambert Estate enveloped by vines.

Farewell from Adelaide

A week in this part of the world really isn’t enough. We hope we’ve inspired you to come back for another taste.

Reviews of this operator

We have just returned from a cosmos….

We have just returned from a Cosmos tour- Gourmet Tuscany. We stayed in Montecatini Terme and traveled from there to many wonderful places, in towns and the fabulous Tuscan countryside. We visit Vineyards for wine tastings, farms for cooking lessons and lunches and dinners in authentic Italian restaurants. All assisted by a friendly, informative tour director. First class holiday

Excellent in every respect

I recently did a 2-week "best of Italy" tour with this company. Our guide, Daniella, was fantastic, the itinerary was excellent and they catered for my rather difficult dietary requirements really well. Really happy and will certainly book with them again

A wonderrful experience

WE saw so much. The tour director Mladin was very knowledgeable and made the experience so enjoyable. The bus driver Paul was so nice and helpful. A couple of the hotels had no refrigerators to keep the water cold. We had to carry our own luggage to and from the rooms. There should have been porters to help us. Over all we had a great time.

Old South &Florida tour

Great organisation, tour guide(Kris) and driver(Tony) who went extra mile and good group of people from all over world. The hotels were excellent in New Orleans and Nashville and very good in other cities. The itinerary was well thought out with visits to Gracelands and Grande ole Oprey topping the bill. We added 3extra nights in New Orleans (giving us 6nights) which was absolutely fab and would advise anyone doing this tour that they consider some extra nights to see and do as much as you can

The tour director expertise and…

The tour director expertise and personality made the trip all the more pleasant. No stress. The local guides as well added to the beauty of this trip. They were knowledgeable and personable. I also have to mention the travelers (the group of 21). The people were friendly an accommodating. This is my third trip with this tour company and I will continue to travel with this company due to excellent planning and customer service. Thank you

5 Towns On the Great Ocean Road To Visit, Australia

If you’re going to explore The Great Ocean Road Drive in Victoria, let me make a suggestion; Don’t rush it.

There is so much to see and do, that you need to spend at least five days to visit the main attractions and landmarks, such as the iconic Twelve Apostles and Port Campbell National Park.

But most people know that already, and have allocated such time to do a road trip. What’s not always clear though, is which towns on the Great Ocean Road you should visit.

Whether you’re looking for places to stay on The Great Ocean Road or you need somewhere with more civilization for a lunch spot, be sure to check out these five towns on the GOR.

How Many Days Do You Need on the Great Ocean Road?

1. torquay, victoria, 2. lorne, victoria, 3. kennett river, gor, 4. apollo bay, great ocean road, 5. port campbell, victoria, final thoughts, tours to the great ocean road, more travel tips for victoria, australia.

The Great Ocean Road  can be completed in one day but it deserves more. You deserve more.

It’s one of Australia’s best road trips for a reason.

Everyone has different time constraints, but you should give yourself at least three days to drive the Great Ocean Road, but five would be more ideal.

We took two weeks for our Great Ocean Road trip, but we are blessed with time.

The tour buses that routinely drive the Great Ocean Road in one day and get to the 12 Apostles limestone stacks at lunchtime (the best time is sunrise or sunset) and will also bypass many of the highlights.

For that reason, we always recommend you hire a car if you don’t have your own and do it yourself.

This 243 km road needs to be experienced from behind the wheel and having your own vehicle allows you the flexibility to stop at viewpoints when and where you like.

The Best Towns on The Great Ocean Road

Besides the stunning beaches, waterfalls, walks, and forests, there are some great towns dotted along the Great Ocean Road worthy of your time.

Here are five towns we recommend you not only visit, but stay at and enjoy what they have to offer.

The Great Ocean Road officially starts in the town of Torquay, and we recommend you stay here for one night before you start the drive, so you can have a full day on the road.

We recommend starting the Great Ocean Road drive from this direction and driving towards Adelaide , so you’ll be on the lane closest to the ocean which makes for easier stops at the view points.

The township of Torquay is famous for its surfing culture, which you can learn more about at the surfing museum Surf World . Even surf brands Rip Curl  and  Quicksilver  were founded in Torquay.

Nearby is one of Australia’s best surfing beaches, Bells Beach , home to the annual Rip Curl Pro Surfing Competition (made infamous by the movie Point Break).

Bells has an impressive cliff-face and the ocean views are spectacular. You can see surfers catching waves here all year round, even in the winter when the waves reach up to 20 feet!

Torquay also offers  popular activities such as nature walks, fishing, sailboarding, surfing and mountain bike riding.  Y ou can enjoy a two hour surf lesson at Torquay Beach – the surfing capital of Victoria.

Just down the road is Jan Juc a neighboring suburb known for its hills and native tea tree. There’s a trail running along the coast between Torquay and Jan Juc for walkers and bike riders that offer excellent views.

Leaving Torquay and continuing west, check out the townships of Anglesea and Aireys Inlet which are beautiful, and if you’re into golfing, pack your clubs and head over to Anglesea Golf Club.

You’ll definitely notice the change in the scenery.

Find accommodation and apartment rentals for Torquay here.

Lorne was our favorite town along the Great Ocean Road drive and we spent three relaxing days here. It’s picturesque and situated right on the Southern ocean with a charm that’s hard to resist.

Lorne has some great cafes to keep your coffee and cake addiction well satisfied. There are several unique shops, boutiques, and galleries to keep the shoppers happy.

The beach is lovely for a walk either early morning or late afternoon and stop at the Lorne Beach Pavilion for a coffee, or beer, with uninterrupted views of the water.

For lunch, eat at The Bottle of Milk ,  famous for their burgers, or grab some takeaway and sit on the grass at the excellent playground by the beach and let the kids run around.

Just behind Lorne, take a short drive to Teddy’s Lookout for spectacular views of the Great Ocean Road. There’s also a 45-minute walk you can do here.

Another great viewpoint spit is Split Point Lighthouse, which is on the way to Lorne in a small town called Fairhaven. This is a great place to do some whale watching from the shore.

The best time to see whales is from June to September, and they frequently swim in the waters along the GOR so always keep your eyes open for them if you visit during this time.

Lorne also plays host to The Falls Music & Arts Festival at the end of December which is very popular.

For a comfortable place to stay, we recommend where we stayed at the Mantra Apartments right on the beach and an easy walk into town.

Read more: Mantra Lorne Review – great place to stay in the Great Ocean Road

With a population of only 50, Kennett River is a quiet and laid-back town between Lorne and Apollo Bay.

Flanked by the Great Otway National Park this town is probably best known for the place to see koalas in the wild along the Grey River Road in the middle of town, just look for the crowds of people and follow their gazes up for quick koala spotting.

There’s also the glowworms at night in Melba Gully, a tropical rainforest neaby, and you can buy bird feed from the store here and feed wild king parrots and Rosellas.

It can be very popular here with many tourist buses lined up. But it’s a lot safer, and easier, to view the koalas here compared to driving Otway Lighthouse Road.

If seeing koalas and glow worms isn’t enough, there are excellent fishing and surfing beaches for beginners. There’s a caravan park at Kennet River should you wish to stay longer with Australia’s favourite furry friends.

Don’t miss the Otway Fly Treetop Adventures, a fun and thrilling activity that allows you to climb obstacle courses in the tree canipes, walk the treetop walk, and zip along ziplines. The surrounding forest as many walking trails to enjoy.

Check out places to stay in Kennett River here!

Half-way along the Great Ocean Road is our second favourite town, Apollo Bay, often described as the place where the hill meets the sea.

Panoramic views over the harbour and the coastline from the Mariners Lookout will give you the best perspective of this. The lookout is located at the northern end of town off Mariners Lookout Road.

Apollo Bay was once a sleepy fishing village but is now a modest seaside town of 2,000 people with plenty of cafes, restaurants and a community market each Saturday. In April it hosts one of the best three-day music festivals in Victoria, the Apollo Bay Music Festival.

Just down the road at Cape Otway are some of the best walks in the country and the town makes for a great base to explore the Otway region of lighthouses, rainforests, waterfalls, and farmland.

Maits Rest is an easy 800m self-guided circuit walk through ancient, cool temperate rainforest and

the walk to Triplet Falls , a one-hour return loop, is a highlight.

The Cape Otway Lighthouse is Australia’s oldest lighthouse still in operation today, you can take a tour and climb to the top 90 meters high with breathtaking views of Bass Straight.

Just up the road from Apollo Bay is one of those “best-kept secrets” of the Great Ocean Road, the Marengo Reefs Marine Sanctuary , a rocky beach with a seal colony.

Apollo Bay Surf & Kayak run 2-hour tours to view the seals.

Another one of the most popular towns on the Great Ocean Road to stay in is Port Campbell. Though some people opt to stay in Port Fairy, which is smaller and quieter, or Warrnambool, for proximity to Logan’s Beach.

For travelers who prefer a more livelier atmosphere, Port Campbell is the better choice. What makes it appealing for travellers is its close proximity to Port Campbell National Park , home to the Twelve Apostles and many other famous Great Ocean Road landmarks.

It’s still a nice enough town with a few cafes, shops and a bay area in a natural setting, but we mainly used it as a base to explore the surrounding area.

We spent the whole day in the National Park, starting with sunrise over the 12 Apostles and finishing with a sunset picnic.

During the day we walked down Gibson’s Steps and then visited Loch Ard Gorge , London Bridge , The Grotto , The Arch , and the Bay of Islands with a handy lunch break back in Port Campbell.

  • We stayed in a cabin in the Port Campbell Holiday Park which was a one minute walk into town. You can find more accommodation for Port Campbell here !

The Great Ocean Road continues on and finishes at Port Fairy. We didn’t really explore the last section too much but did stop at Port Fairy for lunch.

It was pouring with rain so could not explore more. Through the drizzle, it looked like a lovely historical fishing village.

There are many towns on the GOR in Australia, but we hope this guide gave you some inspiration for some towns to visit on your Great Ocean Road itinerary.

These towns are the perfect pitstop for a night and the ideal destinations to help you break up your road trip.
