Ceratizit Challenge by La Vuelta: Trek-Segafredo take team time trial victory on stage 1

Trek-Segafredo took their second team time trial victory of the season on the opening stage of the Ceratizit Challenge by La Vuelta , finishing the 19.9km course in 23 minutes 31 seconds.

Elisa Longo Borghini crossed the line first to claim the first red jersey of the five-stage race.

“I feel really really happy,” the Italian said at the finish. “Because it’s again another team victory. The team did really well, we had a good plan. I have to thank the entire staff from Trek-Segafredo and all the girls because they were really committed today.”

“We knew that we were generally really strong and there was nobody really standing over the others, so we were compact and we tried our best to start fast and to finish faster.”

Early leaders BikeExchange-Jayco took second place, six seconds down on the winners, while FDJ-SUEZ-Futuroscope completed the podium with a time of 23:42.

Movistar, the team of defending champion and pre-race favorite Annemiek van Vleuten, finished in 23:56, leaving the Dutch rider with a 25-second deficit on the red jersey after the first day of racing.

How it happened

The 2022 Ceratizit Challenge by La Vuelta got underway on Wednesday evening with a team time trial around Marina de Cudeyo in Cantabria, in the north of Spain. Just shy of 20km in length, the course was almost entirely flat with just a few gentle rises and not many technical challenges to tackle. With the wind holding off, it would be down to the strongest and most disciplined team to take the win and start to carve out the overall classification.

The early reference times were set by the five Spanish Continental teams starting the race: Rio Miera-Cantabria Deporte, Laboral Kutxa Fundación Euskadi, Soltec, Bizkaia Durango, and Massi Tactic. Massi Tactic set the best early time, stopping the clock at 25:58, but these times would not survive at the top for long.

The first Women’s WorldTour team to finish was Human Powered Health, who finished with four riders to post a time of 25:49 and go to the top of the standings ahead of the Spanish teams. That time was soon beaten, though, when Uno-X crossed the line in 25:14, led by the efforts of former Hour Record holder Joss Lowden. The time was an early benchmark, particularly among the small WorldTour Teams, but wouldn’t be in contention for the stage win.

The first team to go under the 25-minute mark was Ceratizit-WNT, taking 24:52 to complete the course. However, when the GC teams started to arrive at the finish, this time fell dramatically. BikeExchange-Jayco took over a minute out of Ceratizit-WNT’s time, powering to the line in 23:37. New Zealand national champion Georgia Williams and Alex Manly showed their power from the track to help get Kristen Faulkner’s GC effort off to a good start.

The strength of BikeExchange’s performance was proved when Jumbo-Visma crossed the line, trailing the Australian team by 55 seconds. Canyon-SRAM looked slightly disorganized entering the final part of their effort, but pulled things together to finish with five riders and a time of 24:30, limiting the losses for their GC leader Kasia Niewiadoma.

Led to the line by Grace Brown, FDJ-SUEZ-Futuroscope came close to beating BikeExchange, but it was Vårgårda TTT winners Trek-Segafredo who managed to knock the Australians off top spot, clocking a time of 23:31. The team lost Amalie Dideriksen and Tour de Suisse winner Lucinda Brand out on course, leaving Elisa Longo Borghini to be their GC leader and cross the line first. The team had to wait for SD Worx and Movistar to finish, but Trek-Segafredo’s time proved unbeatable, awarding them their second TTT win of the year.

As the race culminated, SD Worx finished at 23:54, with Movistar coming in just two seconds slower at 23:56. Though not competing from the podium, both teams limited the losses for their GC riders, Demi Vollering and defending champion Annemiek van Vleuten. Longo Borghini, Uttrup Ludwig and Kristen Faulkner were among the GC riders to start the race well, whilst the likes of Kasia Niewiadoma and Mavi García are perhaps already on the back foot after the TTT.

As the first Trek-Segafredo rider to cross the line, Elisa Longo Borghini took the red leader’s jersey, while Elynor Bäckstedt will wear the points jersey on stage 2.

“I will try to enjoy the jersey tonight with the team, because every time you win you need to enjoy it and tomorrow is another day. There are really strong riders here. I know I’m in good shape, but I don’t underestimate my rivals because I have a lot of respect for them.”

Tomorrow, the GC riders will have a chance to try and take back any time they lost today as the race heads to the Cantabrian hills. Stage 2 starts and finishes in Colindres, and features five climbs, the toughest of which being the 6km category 1 climb to Alto Fuente Las Varas, averaging at 6%. The finish is flat, but the climbing packed into the 106km route should whittle down the peloton.

Who are the US riders in the Vuelta a España 2021?

Six riders from the US are set to roll off the start ramp in Burgos

The Vuelta a España is just a few days away now and with a a-list looking start sheet set to roll off the ramp in Burgos on Saturday, August 14.

There is a good amount of interest for American fans with seven riders from the States taking part from five different teams - UAE Team Emirates, Team Jumbo-Visma, EF Education-Nippo, Trek-Segafredo and Team DSM.

Sepp Kuss - Team Jumbo-Visma

Sepp Kuss winning stage 15 of the 2021 Tour de France

Sepp Kuss has become one of the finest climbing domestiques in the pro peloton and one of the best climbers out there.

He is a loyal lieutenant to team leader Primož Roglič at Jumbo-Visma, but he has also shown he has the ability to go for the win himself.

This was shown at its best when he won stage 15 of the 2021 Tour de France, out-climbing a breakaway that had Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), Nairo Quintana (Arkéa-Samsic) and many more talented climbers in the group. He also helped Jonas Vingegaard to an amazing second place overall.

Throughout the 2021 season the 26-year-old from Durango, Colorado has been unbelievably consistent.

His first race of the season was the UAE Tour where he finished 16th after helping Chris Harper in GC, then onto 12th overall in the Volta a Catalunya. After that it was a 14th place in the Tour de Romandie where he was riding for himself but was unable to pull off the big result.

Then 23rd overall was next in the Critérium du Dauphiné, but two sixth places back-to-back on stages six and seven showed he did have good form. Then the Tour and it was a tough one after losing Roglič so early to a crash, and with Kuss not being on top form to begin with, he rode his way into the race to take a stage and help Vingegaard as well as finish 32nd overall.

Joe Dombrowski - UAE Team Emirates

Joe Dombrowski has had mixed luck over his career, but he did finally manage to pull off his first win outside of the Tour of Utah this season, with a win up the Sestola climb on stage four of the Giro d'Italia.

He took the mountains jersey then as well but, the next day, which was also his 30th birthday, he crashed and finished a long way down behind the rest of the peloton. The same incident saw Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious) crash out of the race. Dombrowski abandoned the next day along with Landa.

Since then, Dombrowksi, from Christiana in Delaware, has ridden the Dauphiné getting 27th in the final GC, Settimana Ciclista Italiana where he came 42nd, two Spanish one-day races where he finished outside the top 50 and the Vuelta a Burgos where he came 100th.

Lawson Craddock - EF Education-Nippo

Will Barta was a relatively late transfer to EF Education-Nippo thanks to an amazing time trial performance at the 2020 Vuelta a España where he was only beaten by eventual race winner Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma).

The 25-year-old from Boise, Idaho hasn't exactly set the world alight with his rides since signing for EF Education-Nippo though, with his best ride being a fifth place at the US National Time Trial Championships won by his team-mate, Craddock.

Away from that it was two 45th places back-to-back in the final two stages of the Tour de Wallonie that were his best results. With his contract running out again at the end of the year he will be hoping for another top showing at the Vuelta to keep him in the WorldTour.

Quinn Simmons - Trek-Segafredo

The 20-year-old Quinn Simmons is set to take part in his first Grand Tour after a superb second season with the team where he has shown he could become one of the best riders in the pro peloton.

From Durango, Colorado, Simmons has been steadily building up his performances in the one-day and stage races. He did have a tough spell at the end of his spring Classics campaign however, as he had to abandon to Tour of Flanders and Dwars door Vlaanderen, then not starting Ghent-Wevelgem.

But he has since taken his first win with a stage and the overall title at the recent Tour de Wallonie before putting in a strong ride at the Tour de l'Ain.

Simmons does divide opinion since his suspension by his team due to unacceptable social media posts, but he is a very strong rider who will have a good chance at going for at least one stage victory.

Kiel Reijnen - Trek-Segafredo

It hasn't been the easiest six years at WorldTour level for Kiel Reijnen, as he has not taken a win since his first season with Trek-Segafredo in 2016 at the Tour of Utah, where he also won the points standings.

Since then, the 35-year-old from Bainbridge Island, Washington State, has struggled for wins, especially in Europe. In 2021 his best result was 19th on the opening stage of the UAE Tour. In Europe, his highest placing was 82nd at the Tour de l'Ain.

But the puncher is set for his fourth Vuelta for Trek-Segafredo in a team based around Italian climber Giulio Ciccone.

Chad Haga - Team DSM

The ever dependable support rider, Chad Haga is set to ride his 12th Grand Tour for Team DSM and while he has only taken two wins in his career, one at the Giro d'Italia, he is still worthwhile to have in the team to support the team's leaders.

Haga isn't in the team for his own results, aside from National Championships where he came sixth in the road race and second in the time trial this year, but he is in Spain to look after the main men of the team.

Romain Bardet and Alberto Dainese will be those riders at the Vuelta.

The 32-year-old from McKinney, Texas has only raced twice since the Nationals in Knoxville. Clásica San Sebastián, won by fellow American Neilson Powless (EF-Nippo), was a race Haga did not finish followed by a good ride in the Vuelta a Burgos as he and his team tried to defend Bardet's overall lead.

I started watching cycling back in 2010, before all the hype around London 2012 and Bradley Wiggins at the Tour de France. In fact, it was Alberto Contador and Andy Schleck's battle in the fog up the Tourmalet on stage 17 of the Tour de France.

It took me a few more years to get into the journalism side of things, but I had a good idea I wanted to get into cycling journalism by the end of year nine at school and started doing voluntary work soon after. This got me a chance to go to the London Six Days, Tour de Yorkshire and the Tour of Britain to name a few before eventually joining Eurosport's online team while I was at uni, where I studied journalism. Eurosport gave me the opportunity to work at the world championships in Harrogate back in the awful weather.

After various bar jobs, I managed to get my way into Cycling Weekly in late February of 2020 where I mostly write about racing and everything around that as it's what I specialise in but don't be surprised to see my name on other news stories.

When not writing stories for the site, I don't really switch off my cycling side as I watch every race that is televised as well as being a rider myself and a regular user of the game Pro Cycling Manager. Maybe too regular.

My bike is a well used Specialized Tarmac SL4 when out on my local roads back in West Yorkshire as well as in northern Hampshire with the hills and mountains being my preferred terrain.

This page is the most comprehensive about La Vuelta a Espana’s 2022 Team Bikes and Riders. The third Grand Tour starts on August 19th in the Netherlands and ends on September 11th in Madrid.

As there is plenty of information on La Vuelta a Espana 2022 on the web, I am not writing about the course which is on the official website linked here .

La Vuelta a Espana’s 2022 Quick Facts

Not all Grand Tours are equal There are 23 teams of 8 riders on La Vuelta, that’s a peloton of 184 183 riders. In comparison, there were “only” 22 teams of 8 riders on the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia 2022. La Vuelta is also the shortest race of the three Grand Tours. The Giro d’Italia 2022 was a total of 3,445.6km and 50,580m of total elevation gain. The Tour de France 2022 was 3,349.8km and La Vuelta is 3,280km.

But first, some nerdy facts about the La Vuelta 2022’s Team Bikes and Riders so you can impress the customs officer on your next trip to Spain:

• Two teams  are racing on the same  Specialized bikes , including the gears, wheels, tires, shoes, and pedals. They are QuickStep Alpha Vinyl and Bora-hansgrohe.
• Two teams  are racing La Vuelta 2022 on Giant bikes. They are Team BikeExchange – Jayco and the Equippo Kern Pharma.
• Three teams  are racing on the same bike brand,  Canyon , but with different bike setups; they are Movistar, Alpecin-Deceuninck, and Arkea-Samsic.
• All the 184 183 bikes (Quintana withdrew before the eve of the race starts) on La Vuelta 2022 are Carbon frames, disc brakes, and electric shifting types.
• 17 teams  are racing with  Shimano Dura-Ace  Di2 groupset (that’s 136 bikes),  three teams  are with  Campagnolo  Super Record 12 speed groupset,  two teams  are on  SRAM  Red 12 speed, and one team is using FSA 11 speed groupset.
• 13 teams  are using the  Shimano  Dura-Ace SPD-SL  pedals ,  8 teams  are with  Look Keo pedals ,  one team  with  Speedplay,  and  one team  with  Xpedo pedals.

Jumbo-Visma

Primoz Roglic has won the 2019, 2020, and 2021 editions of La Vuelta a Espana. His team will support him to win the 2022 Maglia Rojo (the GC leader’s jersey).

The team Jumbo-Visma is racing the Vuelta a Espana 2022 on the  new 2023 Cervelo S5  on flat and rolling stages and the  new 2023   Cervelo R5  in the mountain stages. All the team bikes are assembled with  Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 12-speed  groupset.  Shimano wheels  fitted with  Vittoria Corsa Speed tubeless  on flat courses and the  Vittoria Corsa tubulars  in the mountain stages. Jumbo-Visma team uses  Garmin GPS . Regarding marginal gains, the chains are lubricated with  AbsoluteBlack GrapheneLub . 

The pedals are the  Shimano Dura-Ace SPD SL pedals  and  Shimano S-Phyre shoes , in white color as the current trend in the peloton.

AG2R Citroën Team

Ben O’Connor has a great team around him to enter the top ten in the GC.

The French team races La Vuelta a Espana 2022 on the  BMC Teammachine SLR01 road bike. The groupset is the  Campagnolo Super Record EPS 12-speed  disc type. The Campagnolo are rolling on the  Pirelli P Zero tires.  The team uses three types of pneumatic technologies that are tubeless, tubulars, and tube types. The Ag2R team uses the  Look’s Keo Carbon Blade Ceramic Ti pedals .  Wahoo  provides the Elemnt GPS computers and heart rate monitors.

Astana Qazaqstan Team

La Vuelta 2022 is the last Grand Tour participation of Vincenzo Nibali as he will retire from professional cycling at the end of the season. It has been such a pleasure to watch him race. Nibali has been one of my favorite riders to watch. He has a lot of class on his bike, and he is one of the most skilled downhillers.

The Qazaq team rides the  Wilier Zero SLR  and  Wilier Filante SLR  bikes.  Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 12-speed  groupset tuned with CeramicSpeed ceramic bearings and OSPW rear derailleur cage.  Corima wheels  fitted with  Vittoria Corsa tubulars .  Look Keo Blade Carbon Ceramic Ti  pedals for some and the Keo 2 Max Carbon for others. Astana Qazaqstan team uses  Garmin GPS  computers and heart rate monitors.

The Bahrain team races La Vuelta 2022 on  Merida Scultura and Reacto . The bikes are assembled with the full  Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 12-speed  92000P groupset. The  Vision wheels  roll on  Continental Grand Prix 5000 S tr tubeless  tires. Bahrain – Victorious team uses Garmin GPS cycling computers.

The Bora – hansgrohe team is a serious challenger for Roglic with Jai Hindley as the winner of the Giro d’Italia 2022.

Sergio Higuita is also a potential candidate for the General Classification.

The German team race on  Specialized S-works Tarmac SL7 . The bikes are assembled with  Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 12-speeds disc brakes type groupset . The  Roval wheels  are spinning on  Specialized tubeless and clincher tires . The pedals are the  Shimano Dura-Ace SPD SL,  and the shoes are Specialized. The team uses the  Wahoo GPS computers .

EF Education-EasyPost is the last World Tour pro team to use the once popular  Speedplay pedals .

The bikes are assembled with  Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 12-speed,  disc brakes groupset, including  wheels and pedals . The tires are the  Continental GP5000 S tr tubeless  models. The GPS cycling computers are from  Garmin .

INEOS Grenadiers

The team Ineos Grenadiers has a very strong team on La Vuelta a Espana 2022. Geoghegan Hart and Carapaz have won the Giro D’Italia, Pavel Sivakov has won few one week stage races. I am eager to see how Carlos Rodriguez will perform in the three weeks race, he looked like the strongest climber in the Vuelta a Burgos 2022.  

The British team is racing on the  Pinarello Dogma F  bikes assembled with  Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 12-speed Disc  groupset and  wheels . The tires are the  Continental Grand Prix 5000 S tubeless and tubular . Ineos team relies on the Garmin GPS computers and heart rate monitors for data. The pedals are the Shimano Dura-Ace SPD-SL.

The Belgian team races aboard the  Cube Litening C:68X TE and the new  Cube Litening Air C:68X  on mountain stages. Will it be officialized this year? I look forward to discovering it.

The bikes are assembled with  Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 12-speed  groupset, disc type. The wheels are the German brand “ Newmen “, and the tires are the  Continental Grand Prix 5000 S tr tubeless . The pedals are the  Look Keo Carbon Blade Ceramic . It is the only team on La Vuelta 2022 using the  Bryton GPS .

The Israeli team is lining up Grand Tours experienced riders such as  Chris Froome, Daryl Impey, Alessandro De Marchi, and Michael Woods.   

Israel – Premier Tech team races with  Factor Ostro VAM bikes  and  Shimano Dura-Ace Di2  gears and brakes. The crankset is from  Rotor , and the pedals are the  Shimano Dura-Ace SPD SL . The wheels are the  BlackInc  which is Factor’s parts brand.  Maxxis High Road Team Edition tubulars  tires keep the team rolling. Israel – Premier Tech is the only team on La Vuelta a Espana 2022 to use the  Hammerhead Karoo 2 GPS  cycling computer.

The Belgian team is bringing plenty of youngsters around Thomas De Gendt who will act as their mentor from his 35 years of age and 19 years of racing as a pro. The team is racing on the  Ridley Noah Fast .

Lotto Soudal team’s bikes are geared with  Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 groupset  tuned up with  CEMA ceramic  bearings. The wheels are the  DT Swiss wheels  rolling on  Vittoria Corsa Graphene tubeless  tires. 

Most of the team uses the  Look Keo Carbon Blade Ceramic Ti  pedals.  Garmin Edge GPS  cycling computers keep the riders informed of vital data.

It is the last Grand Tour of Alejandro Valverde’s career. Valverde is ending his pro cycling career in his homeland Spain.

The Spanish team is racing on the  Canyon Aeroad CFR  assembled with   the  SRAM RED eTap EXS 12-speed wireless shifting , and disc brakes. The bikes are rolling on  Zipp carbon wheels  fitted with  Continental Grand Prix 5000 S Tubular and tubeless  tires depending on the race’s profile. Movistar mostly uses the  Look Keo 2Max Carbon pedals . GPS computers are the  Garmin  models.

The American pro team races La Vuelta a Espana 2022 on  Trek Emonda  and the new 2023  Madone   SLR Gen 7  bikes. The  SRAM Red eTap EXS 12-speed  groupset, featuring wireless shifting, and disc brakes are the choice of the team. The  Bontrager wheels  are fitted with  Pirelli P Zero tubeless and tubular  tires. Despite using the Sram groupset which also owns TIME pedals, the Trek men’s team still uses the  Shimano Dura-Ace SPD SL pedals .  Wahoo GPS  computers equip the Trek team bikes.

The UAE Team Emirates races La Vuelta 2022 with the  Colnago V3RS  model. Some riders are  Colnago Prototipo . All the bikes are equipped with  Campagnolo Super Record EPS 12-speed Disc groupset . The wheels are also from Campagnolo rolling on  Pirelli tires . The team uses three types of tire technologies that are tubeless, tubular, and clinchers. Almeida particularly prefers riding with clinchers using the lightweight Pirelli SmarTube inner tubes. 

All the bearings are C.U.L.T.® Ceramic types.

The  Look Keo Carbon Blade Ceramic Ti pedals  are also spinning on ceramic bearings. The chains are lubricated with  GrapheneLube  from AbsoluteBlack.  SRM  provides the PC8 GPS cycling computer and PowerMeter in the chainring.

The pedals are the  Shimano SPD-SL , and the whole team uses the  Shimano Dura-Ace S-Phyre  cycling shoes, in white color. The GPS computers and heart rate monitors are the  Wahoo Elemnt . The Alpecin-Deceuninck team riders wear the  WHOOP 4.0 Biometric sensors .

As its name indicates, the team is from Burgos city. With some stages of La Vuelta 2022 around town, there will be a lot of supporters on the side of the road to support the local team.

The team Burgos-BH races on three BH bike models: the BH Aerolight  for fast stages and rolling hills, the BH Ultralight  for the mountain stages, and the BH  Aero TT  for Time-Trial stages.

It is the only team to use the  FSA K-Force WE 11-speeds  electronic groupset . The wheels are the Vision rolling on Veloflex tires . Other exotic parts in the pro peloton are the Xpedo pedals and Sigma GPS cycling computers.

Roger Adria, Francisco Galvan, and their teammates race on  Giant TCR Advanced road bikes .

The Equipo Kern Pharma team Giant bikes are assembled with the  Shimano Ultegra Di2 12-speeds , disc brake type groupset.

The wheels, handlebar, stem, Seatpost, and saddle are from  Cadex , the Giant’s lightweight components brand.

The team rides most races with  Vittoria Corsa ‘s tubular tires. but it is possible to see other brands of tires on some bikes as the team is not tied with any tire sponsor.

The UCI Pro Team from the Basque country will have a lot of supporters on the side of the road on Le Puerto de Herrera and the Alto Del Vivero. The Co-op Euskaltel-Euskadi team is racing on Orbea Orca OMX bikes which are also Co-op owned. The gears are Shimano Dura-Ace Di2, 11-speeds , and disc brake type. The cranks are the FSA PowerBox carbon and Shimano Dura-Ace pedals. The team uses Vision carbon wheels with Vittoria Corsa Graphen 2.0 tubular tires.

Team Arkéa Samsic

Nairo Quintana and his teammates at Arkéa Samsic team race on  Canyon Aeroad CFR . This model equally suits the sprinters and the climbers of the Bretagne-based team. Nairo Quintana is not starting the race voluntary due to is disqualification from the Tour de France 2022 announced on August 17th. As a result the team Arkea Samsic is composed of seven riders only.

For Time Trials, the team races on the  Canyon Speedmax TT CFR .

The bikes’ gears are the  Shimano Dura-Ace Di2  12-speed 9200 groupsets. The Shimano Dura-Ace carbon wheels roll on  Continental Competition  Pro Ltd tubulars and tubeless tires. 

The rider’s three contact points are  Selle Italia  saddles,  Canyon Cockpit  CP 0018 (Handlebar/stem combo), and  Shimano Dura-Ace  pedals.

This team actually holds the record for the most participations at Spain's Grand Tour of cycling. Their 37th consecutive Vuelta will see some of the best names in their team compete. Valverde Alejandro obtained an incredible victory in 2015 at Vejer de la Frontera. Riders such as Jose Luis Laguia, Pedro Delgado, Abraham Olano, Pablo Lastras, Maria Jimenez are only some of the ones who contributed to the victory tally than comprises over 50 partial triumphs.

Their 6th Vuelta is close and that's great for a young team that was established in 2011. They fusioned with Radio Shack 5 years ago and one significant victory in La Vuelta is Chris Vuelta's 1st place in the general classification. The team also has a total of 6 stage victories to their name. In 2015, Van Poppel, Frank Schleck, and Jasper Stuyven won three different stages.

Tinkoff is a 2015 podium holder at Vuelta a Espana. Rafal Majka was 3rd in the general classification. Tinkoff was established in 1998 using a Danish license.

Their first victory at Vuelta took place in 2005 with Nicki Sorensen. Undoubtedly, huge victories are linked to the name of their leader - Alberto Contador - who won the 2012 and 2014 editions. Another prominent name is Carlos Sastre, who was on the podium in 2008, 2007, and 2005.

Chris Froome won the Tour de France in 2013 and 2015. He took podium in the Vuelta 2014 and even confessed his preference for the Spain Grand Tour. As part of Team Sky, he also took podium in 2010, with his teammate Bradley Wiggins. Among the names you need to remember when betting we can mention Chris Sutton, Chris Froome (in 2011), Kiryienka Vasil (2013), and Roche Nicolas (in 2015).

One of the most prominent names in the Netherlands since the mid 90s is now getting ready for its 19th participation of the Vuelta. Their only absence happened in 2002. Rabobank was the first sponsor of the team, but Belkin (in 2013) and LottoNL-Jumbo (in 2015) took over.

The team has won for the last time in 2007 through Denis Menchov. World Champon Freire Oscar won the stages that arrived in Logrono, Santiago, and Reinosa in the same year. Bart Jan Lindeman won at La Alpujarra last year.

Established in 2009, this team is heir to Tinkoff's first project. It debuted in the Vuelta in 2010 and showed an impressive fighting spirit ever since: impressive mountain climbs, fast sprinters and great tactics. Joaquim Rodriguez is their best climber. He was on the podium three times in the final classification of the Spain Grand Tour of cycling. Rodriguez was close to be a champion in 2010, 2012, and 2015. He has 9 stage triumphs. Dai Moreno (2013 and 2011) and Menchov denis (2012) are two other key cyclists.

Their best performance in 2015 was Tom Dumoulin's fight against Astana, when he could have become the first Dutchman to win the race. The squad debuted in 2011 and has a few partial victories in the Vuelta. Their win in Madrid last year brought their total number of victories to 10. Marcel Kittel, John Degenkolb and Warren Barguil are prominent names in their team.

The only African team at this edition will be competing for its 3rd consecutive time. Formerly a Professional-Continental squad, Dimension Data took over MTN-Qhubeka. A notable name in their team is 24-year-old Louis Meintjes who obtained the 10th place in the 2015 Vuelta's final general classification. However, their best rider is Kristian Sbaragli, the sprint winner who dominated the stage at Castellon de la Plana.

This team put Australia on the map of pro cycling and has been competing in the World Tour since 2012. The team is managed by Gerry Ryan and Shayne Bannan and has 7 partial victories in just 4 years. Aussie Simon Clarke became King of the Mountain in 2012 and showed that he has what it takes to win. Michael Matthews is the second rider who won two stages. Caleb Ewan did a first great week last year for Orica, while Esteban Chaves finished 5th in the general classification, becoming a great revelation at the Vuelta 2015.

One of the longest-standing sponsors in the World Tour peloton is now up for a new edition of the Vuelta a Espana, the 14th one to be more exact. The Belgians debuted in 1998 under the name Lotto-Mobistar and only changed their name in 2005. Their history goes back to 1985 though, with current Marc Sergeant as a team member.

The Lotto-sponsored team had experts all the time, but their first victory arrived in 2008, when Van Avermaet won against Rebellin and Flecha. Their best edition is 2010, when Philippe Gilbert sealed his talent and was named World Champion. Adam Hansen is another prominent name in their team, the man who impressed everyone in the final stage of the Vuelta a Espana 2014.

A classic international name in the cycling world, they will compete in the Tour of Spain for the ninteenth time. Their debut took place in 1993 (!) and have never missed an edition this century. The flashy fuchsia and blue outfits will again be worn by the Italian cyclists of Lampre Merida.

The team has 18 partial victories, starting in 1993 with a win by Sergei Outshakov from Ukraine. Recent notable past performances include the unforgettable stage in Madrid when Ruben Plaza did an impressive work in 2015. Tiralongo has the best ever position of this team in the general classification (2009).

Their leader is Michel Thetaz and this year they will come to Spain for the 3rd time. La Vuelta 2020 will be the last three-week race for them, after they announced in May that IAM Cycling will definitely conclude its sponsorship. They have no victory in the Vuelta, but Reynes Vicente was really close in 2014. He has the best classification among his team mates in 2015. Pro tip for bettors: Aregger and Reynes are the only riders in this team to have ever completed each stage of La Vuelta.

This French team got into the pro peloton in 1997, their debut in La Vuelta happened in 2005. The riders only missed the 2011 event since then. Past performances include the most sought after triumphs by climbers three years ago in the 2013 La Vuelta: Kenny Elissonde (at Angliru) and Geniez Alexandre (at Peyragudes). Pinot Thibaut has the best classification in the Grand Spanish Tour, with the 7th place.

One of the regular teams present at Vuelta is coached by Patrick Lefevere. Past performances include 11 stage victories, and about 45% of them were obtained by world champion Bettini Paolo. Notable cylists in their team are Tony Martin (2014), Stybar Zdenek (2013), and Cataldo Dario (2012). Only two riders have made it to the top 10 in the general classification, and that happened almost 10 years ago.

Another team that was invited to participate in Spain's Grand Tour this year. The French team is coached by Jean Rene Bernardeau and is formely known as Bonjour, Brioches La Boulangere, Europcar, and now Direct Energie. The team has always been comprised of dedicated cylists such as world champion Laurent Brochard, Sylvian Chavanel, or Pierrick Fedrigo. In 2020, Direct Energie will compete in La Vuelta for the 11th time. Their debut took place in 2005, and their best general classification happened last year - Romain Sicard is responsible for that.

One of the oldest teams in the standings, Cofidis is a regular partipant in the Vuelta, having missed the Tour of Spain only in 2000. The French always come with powerful line-ups and fight for good positions in the general classification. They have a total of 14 partial victories, and 5 King of the Mountain triumphs, including 4 with spectacular cylist Moncoutié. Cofidis has an incredible history behind, with some of the most amazing finales of this sport, and Moncoutié was part of most of them. The victory tally was increased in 2014 by Dani Navarro.

Their team leader is Vaughters Jonathan and they only got accepted in the World Tour a few years ago. The team was sponsored by Garmin at the beginning, but Cannondale took over in 2015 when the Italian and US squads fusioned. Cannondale Team boasts a heterogeneous line-up, and their riders come from all over the world. This year's formula debuted in Vuelta 2009, obtaining exceptional results. However, Andrenw and Martin Talansky have the all-time best position of a Cannondale team member in the Tour of Spain, both with 7th place.

A seasoned team in La Vuelta's history, Caja Rural-Segures RGA competed in Spain for the first time in 2012. This year, they received one of the four invites and they want to achieve the same goal from last year - if not better. Antonio Piedra managed a spectacular debut campain in Tour of Spain at Lagos de Covadonga. Notable past performances include King of the Mountain victories in 2014 and 2015. David Arroyo finished in twelfth place last year at Vuelta.

Founded in 2010, this yeam grew slowly as well, but got the support of team Endura and its current name was found in 2014. Raplh Denk is the star of Germany's team and they have already competed in 3 Grand Tour, debuting in the 2012 Giro d'Italia. Their first Tour de France took place in 2013. Bora-Argon only has one participation in La Vuelta, and Leopold Konig managed to be among the first 10 in the general classification at the time. They were now invited to compete at La Vuelta 2020.

Formerly known as Phonak, BMC grew slowly but steady with each passing season. The small U.S. team that competed only in national championships went international at did at amazing job when it sign up Philippe Gilbert, Greg Van Avermaet, Cadel Evans, or Samuel Sanchez. They competed in La Vuelta 2011 for the first time in the Tour of Spain and they only took a victory in 2012. Gilbert also managed a victory in 2013 in Tarragona. In 2015, BMC Racing Team won the Team Time Trial and the 14th stage in Alto Campoo. Their best performance? Sanchez Samuel placed 6th in La Vuelta 2014.

Astana is the team who won La Vuelta in 2017 and they will be back this year to conquer the general classification. Fabio Aru was their winner last year. The team had impressive performances at Giro d'Italia in 2014, where Fabio Aru won the first place. The magnificent developments of the Vuelta race in recent years allowed Astana Pro Team to have triumphant finishes, including in the Andorra stage.

The French from AG2R La Mondiale are a long-standing team of the pro peloton and they have conquered many summit finishes in their 3-week race participations. The team leader is Lavenu Vincent, who has an experience of more than twenty years in cycling. Domenico Pozzovivo and Nicolas Roche have obtained top 10 positions in the final classifications of La Vuelta in 2013 and 2010, respectively. Spaniard Luis Arrieta won the last second stage in the Tour of Spain in 2006.

Long-lost first model of the USS Enterprise from ‘Star Trek’ boldly goes home after twisting voyage

DALLAS (AP) — The first model of the USS Enterprise — used in the opening credits of the original “Star Trek” television series — has boldly gone back home, returning to creator Gene Roddenberry’s son decades after it went missing.

The model’s disappearance sometime in the 1970s had become the subject of lore, so it caused a stir when it popped up on eBay last fall. The sellers quickly took it down, and then contacted Dallas-based Heritage Auctions to authenticate it. Last weekend, the auction house facilitated the model’s return.

Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry, CEO of Roddenberry Entertainment, said he’s thrilled to have the model that had graced the desk of his father, who died in 1991 at age 70.

“This is not going home to adorn my shelves,” Roddenberry said. “This is going to get restored and we’re working on ways to get it out so the public can see it and my hope is that it will land in a museum somewhere.”

AP correspondent Margie Szaroleta reports on the return of the original model of the USS Enterprise from the TV show “Star Trek.”

Heritage’s executive vice president, Joe Maddalena, said the auction house was contacted by people who said they’d discovered it a storage unit, and when it was brought into their Beverly Hills office, he and a colleague “instantly knew that it was the real thing.”

They reached out to Roddenberry, who said he appreciates that everyone involved agreed returning the model was the right thing to do. He wouldn’t go into details on the agreement reached but said “I felt it important to reward that and show appreciation for that.”

Maddalena said the model vanished in the 1970s after Gene Roddenberry loaned it to makers of “Star Trek: The Motion Picture,” which was released in 1979.

“No one knew what happened to it,” Rod Roddenberry said.

The 3-foot (0.91-meter) model of the USS Enterprise was used in the show’s original pilot episode as well as the opening credits of the resulting TV series, and was the prototype for the 11-foot (3-meter) version featured in the series’ episodes. The larger model is on display at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum.

The original “Star Trek” television series, which aired in the late 1960s, kicked off an ever-expanding multiverse of cultural phenomena, with TV and movie spinoffs and conventions where a fanbase of zealous and devoted Trekkies can’t get enough of memorabilia.

This USS Enterprise model would easily sell for more than $1 million at auction, but really “it’s priceless,” Maddalena said.

“It could sell for any amount and I wouldn’t be surprised because of what it is,” he said. “It is truly a cultural icon.”

Roddenberry, who was just a young boy when the model went missing, said he has spotty memories of it, “almost a deja vu.” He said it wasn’t something he’d thought much about until people began contacting him after it appeared on eBay.

“I don’t think I really, fully comprehended at first that this was the first Enterprise ever created,” he said.

He said he has no idea if there was something nefarious behind the disappearance all those decades ago or if it was just mistakenly lost, but it would be interesting to find out more about what happened.

“This piece is incredibly important and it has its own story and this would be a great piece of the story,” Roddenberry said.

Thankfully, he said, the discovery has cleared up one rumor: That it was destroyed because as a young boy, he’d thrown it into a pool.

“Finally I’m vindicated after all these years,” he said with a laugh.

Kia began rolling out over-the-air updates for the EV9 custom NBA display themes earlier this month and ahead of playoffs starting April 20.

The EV9 is the first Kia to gain remote upgrades with its new Connected Car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC) infotainment system. The NBA themes will be available for $39.99 per team through Kia’s Connected Store’s Digital Features and Services. You can unlock it through the Kia Access App or Kia Owner Portal .

Kia’s first three-row electric SUV is already off to a hot start in the US, with over 4,000 units sold through March.

After the EV9 launched late last year, Kia called its under $55,000 starting price (excluding destination) a “wake-up call” for the industry.

Although the EV9 is being shipped from Korea, Kia plans to move production to the US next month. By building the electric SUV at its West Point, GA plant, Kia expects the EV9 will qualify for the federal EV tax credit.

At 197.2″ long, the EV9 is just longer than the Kia Telluride but is the same height (70.1″) and width (77.9″)

It also includes 42.8″ of rear legroom, which is more than the Cadillac Escalade and 3-row Range Rover P400. It’s no wonder the EV9 is in demand in the US.

Episode 4 of Star Trek: Discovery sees Burnham and Rayner team up to save the Discovery and its crew from a time travel wormhole.

Episode 4 of Star Trek: Discovery aired on Paramount Plus this week,as it approaches the halfway mark in the fifth and final season. The sci-fi spin-off series consists of ten episodes, with one airing each week until the finale on May 30. The show began in 2017, and Season 5 has been praised for its serialized storytelling and exciting visual effects. Star Trek: Discovery stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Callum Keith Rennie, Doug Jones and Anthony Rapp.

The fourth episode of Star Trek: Discovery 's final season sees Burnham and Rayner put their differences aside when they realize they are in a wormhole and have traveled back in time. They must fight to save the Discovery and the crew on board, by facing off with bounty hunters, Moll and Lák.

Star Trek: Discovery Episode 4 sees Moll and L’ak meeting with a dodgy dealer. They hand him a bag of the latinum and the dealer tries to raise the price of it, and it turns out Moll has poisoned the latinum, and takes the item from the dying dealer. L’ak is uncertain. But Moll assures him they’ll get ahead of the USS Discovery . She continues that once they have the Progenitor’s tech, they’ll be free. She tells him they have to hurry to catch Discovery on Trill. It is revealed that the device obtained from the dealer is the same one planted on Adira Tal in the final moments of the previous episode.

Elsewhere, the device activates in Adira’s quarters on the Discovery, and the device hops off the uniform and runs across the room and disappears into a girder.

In his lab, Stamets spots the bug and watches as it disappears into the wall. Captain Michael Burnham gets a report from Owo, revealing that she’s picking up some odd readings, and something has broadcast a signal from the ship. Burnham and Captain Rayner try to beam to the bridge, but they go nowhere.

The ship is moving but the lights flicker and a klaxon sounds. Rayner asks if they are under attack, as Burnham tries to contact the bridge but nothing seems to be working. Burnham and Rayner head to the bridge on foot and find the rest of the crew unconscious and wearing 23rd-century Starfleet uniforms. Rayner and Burnham realize they’re in a wormhole and have traveled back in time. Discovery follows Burnham as she goes through the wormhole into the future. Turns out, they haven’t just traveled back in time, but they’re actually jumping through time.

Burnham arrives in the future and explains the situation, and that she's undertaking an important mission for the future Discovery . Burnham demonstrates her personal knowledge of several crew members to prove her story , as Airiam, Tilly and the rest of the crew are confused at her appearance.

They remain skeptical of Burnham’s claims, but she says she will convince Airiam, and everyone will trust her judgment in the end. Burnham reveals she saw Airiam die, and she recounts the climax of “Project Daedalus.” Airiam convinces the rest of the crew of Burnham's legitimacy, and asks what help Burnham needs from them. Elsewhere, in the lab, Rayner and Stamets prepare to tackle the temporal shield, but a phaser wielding TB and Rhys interrupt their plans.

YB orders Stamets to shut down the warp core, but Rayner suggests Burnham come down, but there’s no time for that, and she urges Rayner to handle the situation. Rayner convinces Rhys they’re from the future with the knowledge he learned during interviews, but YB is still not convinced.

Rayner tells the story about Burnham arriving at the bridge and not feeling like she belongs. He tells YB she deserves to be there, and pleads with her to trust her instincts, which he knows are currently telling her to stand down, with YB seemingly convinced. Discovery ’s warp bubble is broken, and Rayner puts the device on the chronophage. Another time jump occurs, and they arrive back to the present day, which is fully intact.

Burnham orders Rayner to go to see Culber to tend to his hand injury, while Rayner states that it isn’t lost on him that what made them successful was their closeness with the crew. He admits he can be stubborn like Burnham used to be, but Burnham concludes they make a good team.

Star Trek: Discovery episode 4's ending sees the rest of the crew caught up on the chronophage. In the six hours since the time jumps began, the DOTs have found a warp signature that matches M’ak’s ship. Rayner compliments Rhys on his theory, which proved to be accurate. However, M’ak’s trail disappears, as Burnham orders the bridge crew to get to work on solving the mystery.

Juanpe López wins Tour of the Alps

The animated Andalusian climber successfully defended his race lead all the way to the finish in Levico Terme, after five days of racing.

How it happened.

On Stage 3, Juanpe attacked through the icy rain to take a beautiful solo win 38 seconds ahead of his main GC rivals. A solid margin, but by no means comfortable with two more days in the mountains left to race. The next day, proudly wearing the green jersey as race leader, Juanpe stepped up and doggedly defended his lead. With so many riders dangerously close in the overall standings, he had no choice but to follow every move he could, right to the end of the stage.

The final stage, a loop around Levico Terme, presented two more mountains standing in the way of Juanpe and his first stage-race victory. Fortunately, it wasn’t just Juanpe who stepped up to the challenge, but also his teammates who played a vital role in controlling the peloton throughout the day. When the time came for Juanpe to take matters into his own hands, he did, looking as composed and experienced as his nickname ‘El Patrón’ suggests.

As the group of climbers fought for the stage win, Juanpe crossed the line a few meters behind punching the air with elation to celebrate the first overall race victory of his career.

The winner’s words

“I feel super happy because I worked really hard in Tenerife with the team, and being with all my teammates there made me really motivated. Last year I had some hard months after the crash, but now I’m really good, especially in the downhill. I really surprised myself, it was super nice for me.

“Today the team did a good job one by one, the young ones – Nils and Liam – were great from the start, and then Fabio and Dario were really important for me, keeping me calm and giving me confidence. Then, if I said Amanuel and Carlos did their job 100%, that wouldn’t be enough praise. They did a f***ing nice job. This victory is for the whole team.

“The green jersey is extra special because it is the color of Real Betis, my team.”

Hello and welcome to Cyclingnews' live coverage of the opening team time trial of the 2023 Vuelta a España

Here it is then, the beginning of the third and final Grand Tour of the season! 

In many ways, the Vuelta is also the hardest. Certainly for those who aren’t climbers it’s a nightmare to get through, with this year’s route featuring an especially punishing nine summit finishes, including the feared Alto de L'Angliru and an unprecedented finish up the Col du Tourmalet. And Spain can also pose the added challenge of excessive heat, making these hard days of climbing even more agonising.  

This year’s edition can also lay claim to being the most difficult in terms of the line-up. Every winner of the last three Grand Tours are here to do battle: defending Vuelta champion Remco Evenepoel, winner of this year’s Giro Primož Roglič, and Jonas Vingegaard fresh off his Tour de France triumph last month.

With Roglič and Vingegaard, Jumbo-Visma are throwing their all as they aim to become the first team to win all three Grand Tours in a season. But as well as Evenepoel, they’ll have a host of dangerous rivals to worry about, including Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers), Enric Mas (Movistar), Aleksandr Vlasov (Bora-Hansgrohe) and the UAE Team Emirates duo of João Almeida and Juan Ayuso.

In about a quarter of an hour, the Vuelta will begin with a team time trial in Barcelona. It’s quite a short one, lasting 14.8km, and therefore the gaps between the top teams shouldn’t be too significant. But team time trials always have the potential to go badly wrong, and each line-up will need to be careful to ride harmoniously and not lose too many riders too early.

The main news in the days preceding the race was the Covid positive that forced Gerben Thijssen to miss the race . That might spread some fear in the peloton of another spread of the virus — especially bearing in mind how one of the top favourites, Remco Evenepoel, had to pull out of the Giro earlier this year for that very reason.

Earlier we mentioned how the heat can play a big part in the Vuelta. Well, today it looks as though rainfall might be what the riders have to worry about. There are grey clouds and wet roads in Barcelona as Caja Rural-Seguros RGA wait at the start line.

And they're off! Caja Rural-Seguros RGA get the 2023 Vuelta under way.

It’s not raining just yet, but should the heavens open later in the day, it could have a big impact on which teams go well and which don’t.

DSM are the second team to start their run. The teams are setting off at four minute intervals.

Now Trek-Segafredo are setting off. They might be splashing the cash in the transfer market at the moment, but have brought a more modest line-up to the Vuelta, without an obvious GC leader

The corners really are lairy on these wet roads. One of the Lidl-Trek riders nearly went down going around one.

Cofidis are the next team out on the road, seeking more success are breaking their long stage win drought at the Tour de France last month

Burgos-BH are off, starting yet another Vuelta having secured a wildcard invitation.

The first preliminary times at the intermediate point are in. Caja Rural arrived with a time of 12.12, and DSM were 26 seconds quicker at 11.46.

And now Caja Rural are the first team at the finish, posting a time of 16-16. That’s likely to be somewhere near the bottom of the rankings come the end of the day, notwithstanding and worsening weather conditions.

Total Energies are the latest team to roll down the start list. They too are lacking a clear GC candidate.

DSM have finished and they've comfortably beaten Caja-Rural’s time, setting a new best time of 15-34

Arkéa Samsic have got their ride underway, and are in a striking yellow strip new for this race - so as not to clash with the leader’s red jersey.

It seems those times for the first two teams weren’t accurate: DSM now being reported at finishing with 17-30, and Caja Rural 16-12. Lidl-Trek have just finished their ride, and are some way down, posting a time 56 seconds slower than DSM’s.

Meanwhile Intermarché - Circus - Wanty are the latest team to enter the course 

Here come Cofidis, who look a bit disorganised as three riders have to slow down briefly to allow the fourth and fifth rider to catch up (the team’s time is taken as their fifth man over the line). They arrive 22 seconds slower than DSM, to slot into second in the rankings.

Lotto-Dstny are the next team, and begin their Vuelta under a tragic shadow. Their young new recruit Tijl De Decker died in a training accident just yesterday. 

Here's a shot of DSM out on the road earlier setting what remains the fastest time. As you can tell, these roads are concerningly wet.

Burgos-BH have set the slowest time so far, 1-13 down on DSM

Bahrain-Victorious are one of the first teams to start so far with real GC ambitions. They have Mikel Landa, Damiano Caruso and dark horse Santiago Buitrago on their roster.

EF Education-EasyPost begin, and have a strong history in this discipline. Time trial specialist Stefan Bissegger will be their driving force today.

Unfortunately, we’ve had our first crash of the day. Three Arkea riders went down as they went around one of the last corners before the finish line. Their team arrived at the finish in ones and twos, and finish with the worst time of the day so far, 1-18 down on DSM.

Alpecin-Deceuninck have begun. They're here to chase stage wins rather than a high GC placing, so will likely take the course carefully with no risks.

Intermarché–Circus–Wanty finish with the third best time, 33 seconds slower than DSM. This time by DSM is proving to be an impressive early benchmark.

The main benefactor of that DSM time is Romain Bardet. The Frenchman is used to losing time in stages against the clock, but should be well up there in GC contention by the end of today’s.

Jayco-AlUla are off. Their main GC man is Eddie Dunbar, looking to build on his top ten finish at the Giro this year.

Lotto-Dstny just miss out on third-place by one second. Here is the current podium spots:

Bahrain-Victorious are on the finishing straight, and become the team to get closest to DSM so far. They post the second fastest time, 10 seconds slower, which their GC contenders can likely be content with.

Now here goes Bora-Hansgrohe. This is one of the most exciting line-ups at the Vuelta, featuring established GC contender Aleksandr Vlasov, untested young prospect Cian  Uijtdebroeks, and a host of other quality names such as Sergio Higuita and Lennard Kämna.

EF Education-EasyPost get even closer to DSM’s time than Bahrain-Victorious, coming just six seconds within beating it. This is what the top five looks like now:

The real GC contenders are beginning to take to the road, as Ineos Grenadiers are the next team to roll off the start ramp. Geraint Thomas is their main man, and they have no less than Filippo Ganna to help propel him to a good time today.

Problems for Alpecin-Deceuninck as they have a faller around the same corner that affected the Arkea team. They had been set for a very competitive time, but instead their fifth rider rolls over the line to see them place seventh at 41 seconds.

Another crash, this time earlier in the route, for Ineos Grenadiers’ Laurens De Plus He’s back up and on his bike, but won’t be contributing anything more to his team today, and will lose time on the GC.

Not a great time for Jayco-AlUla, whose leader Eddie Dunbar also slid out on one of the final corners. He remounted immediately, but loses 51 seconds to DSM with the rest of the team.

A good time for Groupama-FDJ, who negotiated the final corners without any fallers. They’re the third-fastest so far, 6 seconds down on DSM.

Now come the team we've all been waiting for - Jumbo-Visma. The evening sun's just coming out as they begin, but won't arrive early enough to dry out the wet roads.

6th place at 28 seconds for Bora-Hansgrohe at the line, a solid but unspectacular effort. Here’s how the top five looks now:

5.Cofidis at 22secs

UAE Team Emirates are off, needing a strong time for Juan Ayuso and João Almeida, while also making sure neither crash.

It looks like Ineos are struggling a little in the aftermath of De Plus’ crash. They reached he intermediate check down in fifth-place. 

And they remain fifth at the finish, conceding 20 seconds to DSM. Not as good as you’d expect from such a star-studded team, which perhaps indicates they were taking a safety first approach in such treacherous conditions. 

Movistar are the penultimate team to set off. The local favourites will be under pressure to perform, even in such tricky conditions.

Jumbo-Visma not looking especially cohesive on the road. There was a split for a few moments as a few of their riders got a gap over the others. 

AG2R Citroën Team finished with the twelfth best time of the day. Not bad for an outfit with no star names to speak of.

And now finally, here is Soudal-QuickStep, the last remaining team. Remco Evenepoel’s title defense begins here.

Astana Qazaqstan have gone very well, posting the fifth best time, just 17 seconds slower than DSM. That’s better than most expected.

It seems Jumbo-Visma are having problems out there. At the intermediate sprint, they’re way down in 10th on the rankings, almost half a minute slower than DSM.

Jumbo-Visma cross the line, and they’re down in ninth-place. That’s much worse than we would have expected, but, in the grand scheme of things, the 32 seconds they lost to DSM isn’t too bad considering how things would have been had any of their men crashed.

UAE Team Emirates aren’t setting the world alight either, but are quicker than Jumbo-Visma. At the intermediate time check, they’re seventh.

New fastest time at the intermediate time check - and it’s Movistar! The Spanish teams are flying on home roads, and are in contention for the stage win.

Movistar can’t afford to ease up though, as they were on exactly the same time as DSM at the check.

UAE Team Emirates finish with the 12th fastest time, at 37 seconds. Not great, but far from a disaster.

A tense wait now for DSM, who have occupied the hot seat virtually all day

Correction: actually Movistar were seven seconds quicker than DSM at the check. It seems likely they will take the win, provided they avoid any incidents over those treacherous final corners.

It's going to be very close...

...so close in fact that as Movistar cross the line, it's unclear whether they or DSM have won the stage!

We're awaiting official confirmation, but it looked like there was barely anything in it between the two teams

It's been confirmed, Movistat's time was a fraction slower than DSM's!

We’re still waiting for Soudal-QuickStep to finish, and they were still in contention at the intermediate check. This isn’t DSM’s stage yet…

Remco Evenepoel is unhappy at the finish, remonstrating at the camera and pointing to the sky. He won't be the only rider unhappy at what turned out to be such a dangerous course in these wet conditions

Evenepoel’s gesture might also have been directed towards how dark it was by the finish. Here’s what it looked like when the team before his Soudal-QuickStep line-up, Movistar, were finishing.

Evenepoel has just given an animated interview, and has confirmed that it is the dark conditions that has upset him. Whereas there was nothing they could do to prevent rainfall, he says the organisers should have known what time it might get dark, and therefore not have started the stage so late. 

As for the red jersey, sprinter Lorenzo Milesi was the first of the DSM riders to cross the line, so he’ll have the honour of wearing the jersey tomorrow. Few would have predicted that at the start of the day!

And here's Lorenzo Milesi resplendent in the red jersey. Five Movistar riders are all on the same time as him on GC, so the 21-year-old will have to be very attentive during tomorrow’s finale if he’s to keep it, especially on the late climb.
