Fabulous tour of Rajasthan in Nov 2019
Had a fabulous tour of Rajasthan with Extreme Bike Tours in Nov 2019. 10 blokes & 2 guides on RE 500s with 1 mechanic & 1 bus driver. Ben, John & Tarun were fantastic and were happy to bend & flex the itinerary to suit our requirements (including organising a cricket match against a local team in Ranthambore). Looking forward to our next Extreme Bike Tour to Sri Lanka later in 2020. Highly recommended!

Sri Lanka trip
I just came back from a trip to Sri Lanka, some biking, some kitesurfing. Following the amazing Mongolia trip last year I called on Extreme Biking Tours to help me put together a solo trip round Sri Lanka. After a very warm welcome at HQ is Galle, EBT recommended a great route through the highlands. Very much off the beaten track with challenging roads up and down mountain passes amidst spectacular scenery. Royal Enfield Classic ran like a dream, like purpose built for these type of roads. The bike is so well maintained and just the things to have. Thank you for help and arrangements. Again, a big recommendation for the whole team at Extreme Bike Tours.

Hi Chris! Thanks a lot for your kind words. Looking forward for our next ride together! Team Extreme
Definitely a bucket list item.
I had the privilege of doing a 5 Star Rhajastan Tour back in 2013. It was an amazing trip and an experience that I will always remember. Zander and his team do a top notch job with these tours, from the route with so many interesting places to see, to the excellent accommodation and foods. Something I would love to do again one day and highly recommended. Shane Mather Brisbane, Australia.

Extreme bike tour in Sri Lanka - Vincenzo & Isabella
I loved the tour and enjoyed every moment of it. Yes, you have to be very focused when driving in Sri Lanka especially getting in and out of the main towns but the team made everything easier for me with support vehicle and a local guy on another Royal Enfield. They have been attentive to our requests and looked after us. Totally recommended, very professionals and i wish i can join them in another tour soon.

Trip Extensions
Day 1: kandy - take a train ride, then a bike ride.
We start today with an early pickup from your Colombo Hotel before we drive to the Colombo Fort station to board the train that takes us up into the hills towards Kandy. The scenic journey takes 3-4 hours before we arrive around lunchtime, to meet our support team and our bikes. To warm up our legs, we’ll cycle from the train station into the center of town, pedaling down small roads to escape the traffic. Our ride takes us along a river and its local villages. In the evening, there is time to visit the Temple of the Tooth, where the sacred Buddha tooth relic is placed with supporting stories illustrated in a prayer hall. Tonight we’ll enjoy our first dinner together in Kandy.
Special Information: Today's adventure kicks off with a scenic 3-hour train ride to Peradeniya Station, just before reaching Kandy. After grabbing a coffee, you'll take a short 30-minute transfer to a lovely lunch spot.
Refueled and ready, you'll hop on your bike and start a 23.4km (14.5mi) ride from the train station into the heart of town. With a manageable 392 meters of elevation gain on paved paths, this ride is a great way to warm up and get into the swing of your cycling journey.
Day 2: Ride & Train to Nuwara Eliya, Colonial-era Hill Station
Today we pedal back roads and find ourselves climbing soon after leaving Kandy. As we go, the population thins out and the tea creeps in. As we weave our way through tea plantations, keep an eye open for roadside shops selling delicacies such as fresh dates and dried corn crackers. We then enjoy some descents today and a wide variety of road surfaces, always with minimal traffic.
We finish our ride down at the Gampola railway station where we board the train for the higher elevations. The train ride is stunning, and the carriage is quite comfortable. We alight at Nana Oya and then travel by car the short distance to Nuwara Eliya. You will need your warm clothes up here, but the hotel does have an open fireplace and a great meal for dinner.
Note that the short ride group today will be able to linger over breakfast a little longer, before taking a short van transfer to their start point at the top of the climb. From there on, the two groups will follow the same route.
Special Information: The day starts with a 1-hour transfer to the cycling starting point. From there, enjoy a morning ride to Gampola Railway Station, covering 26.3km (16.3mi) with a 497m elevation gain on paved paths. After the ride, board the train and then a van for a scenic 3.5-hour transfer to Nuwara Eliya, where you’ll unwind and take in the stunning views.
Day 3: Explore the Highland Tea Plantations - Nuwara Eliya
Today we take a loop ride that takes us first on a fun descent, then on a sustained, but not terribly long climb up through tea plantations. We will likely see colorfully dressed ladies with baskets on their heads, picking the tender leaves from the tea trees.
We reach a ridgeline and ride through Ambewela, an area known for its dairy farms. We stop at a strawberry farm and if time permits, a dairy. We will stop for a cup of tea in quaint Ambewela and then ride the ridge back to Nuwara Eliya through a lovely, lush green landscape.
In the afternoon, we venture out to a tea factory, set on a plantation where we can see the process that transpires after the pickers turn in their baskets full of tender leaves. We’ll learn a little about the history of tea in Sri Lanka and of course, have an opportunity to sample the product.
We'll return to Nuwara Eliya for another evening at our comfortable hotel.
Special Information: Today's adventure includes a loop ride through picturesque tea plantations, covering 43km (26.7mi) with a total elevation gain of 933m. We’ll visit a strawberry farm, and if time allows, a dairy farm for some local treats and a refreshing cup of tea at a charming spot in Ambewela.
With our support vehicle always on standby, you can push your limits comfortably. After cycling and exploring, a 30-minute van transfer will take you to your hotel for a relaxing evening.
Day 4: Hike to World's End Lookout, Bike to Haputale
A very early start is needed today for the transfer by vehicle up to Horton Plains National Park, and we’ll enjoy some light snacks to get us started. From there, we will walk through grassy highlands to World's End Lookout where we take in astonishing views over the valley from the clifftop. Keep your eyes peeled while you walk, as we should hopefully glimpse some deer and monkeys along the way.
A local breakfast of roti and sambal is had back at the hike start/finish point and once we have warmed ourselves with a cup of tea, we can commence a truly thrilling bike ride, descending from 2100m above sea level to about 930m. That is not to say the whole ride is a descent, there is some up and down to keep the legs moving and overall it is a beautiful route that starts in cloud forest and montane grassland, descends through Eucalypts and cedar, and ends up back down in tea plantation country. The scenery is stunning and by the time you roll into another comfortable hotel, you have probably earned yourself a restful afternoon.
Special Information: Today's journey starts with a 1-hour transfer to Horton Plains National Park, where you'll embark on a 9km (5.6mi) loop hike to the stunning World's End Lookout. After soaking in the breathtaking views, you’ll cycle 40.7 km (25.3mi) to Haputale, with an elevation gain of 742m on paved paths.
Enjoy frequent stops for lunch, exotic fruit snacks, coffee, and tea, and with the support vehicle always available, you can confidently push your limits.
Day 5: Transfer, Bike & Transfer to Yala National Park
We will take a drive through the beautifully scenic landscape. After easing our way into the day with those nice views, we arrive at a little town called Ella where we take to our bikes. From here we'll cycle out along a ridge, with deep valleys on either side and tea plantation workers often out in the fields picking tea or tending to the plants. The first 15km has us climbing to a point where the short ride group will join. Then it is an enjoyable and continual downhill coast to the flatlands. When we run out of gravity-assisted riding, we'll stop for lunch in a small village and immediately you can feel the shift between regions.
People on the flatlands and plains move a little more slowly and with good reason, it's pretty warm down here. We are now in the southeast corner of Sri Lanka, and after loading into the van we will drive between two National Parks, the famous Yala on one side and the lesser-known Lunugamvehera on the other. We often encounter Elephants along this road who levy a toll on us, paid in bananas.
We reach the coast and our stunningly located beachside resort around the mid-afternoon, so there is time to rest a little and then enjoy a walk on the beach and a sundowner before dinner.
Special Information: Today begins with a 2h45m vehicle transfer to the cycling starting point. After a visit to Ella Tower for coffee and a brief walk, you'll start your bike ride to Buttala. You’ll cover around 35-50km (21.7-31mi) with a 476m elevation gain on mostly paved paths.
After a well-deserved lunch, enjoy a 2-hour van transfer to your hotel for a well-earned rest.
Day 6: Safari of Yala national Park Seeking Leopards & Elephants
Today is safari day. We will take our local specialists' recommendations on whether it should be a morning or afternoon safari. That advice will depend on seasonal animal movements and the weather patterns of the day, and it will provide us the best conditions for wildlife spotting.
Either morning or evening, the safari will last around 2.5 to 3 hours and there is usually a good chance to see a range of animals. Of course, the Leopard is the star of the show and we often see them. It helps that our preferred Naturalist knows the park better than most, so he will guide our driver to avoid other jeeps and will favor sitting in wait t key locations rather than constantly driving to find animals.
Aside from the safari, the day (morning or afternoon) is yours to rest, relax and take stock of the adventure so far. The hotel has fantastic facilities including a 75m swimming pool, and the beach is patrolled by the hotel's lifeguards who are trained in Australia. Your three meals will also be served at the hotel today with plenty of flexibility.
Day 7: Ride to the beach
For our final riding day of the tour, we will first drive inland a little to get clear of busier coastal traffic, then take to the bikes for a meandering ride through lowland farming communities of the Southern Province. Here you'll encounter bunches of golden-colored coconuts sitting under thatched shelters, and various small stalls selling daily essentials. The coconuts are fantastic for drinking and the vendors are always eager for a chat.
We will weave our way through today's route, stopping for said coconuts, snacks, and other refreshments along the way. Our ride concludes at Wijaya Beach, a lovely spot overlooking the beach, with good pizza for dinner time. This is an excellent place to enjoy a cold drink with your feet in the ocean, and we plan to do just that.
A short vehicle transfer will deliver us to our hotel in Galle, Sri Lanka's second-largest city. It is a historical location which we will explore in more depth with our guide tomorrow, and also a location made famous by a game very popular in Sri Lanka, Cricket.
Special Information: Begin your morning ride from the hotel, covering 45.9km (28.5mi) with a 252m elevation gain on mostly paved paths. Since this is your final cycling day, feel free to push your limits and make the most of it!
After your cycling adventure, a 1-hour transfer will take you to a delightful lunch stop. Then, relax and enjoy the scenery during a 2-hour van transfer to your hotel in Galle.
Day 8: Guided Walk of Galle Fort - Conclusion of Tour
The story of Galle Fort is fascinating and dates back even further than the 16th century when the Portuguese built the first ramparts. The Dutch arrived later and heavily fortified the settlement and then eventually along came the British. Through these many changes of rulers, the ethnic makeup of the city was born through its significant role as a trading port. Today the families who live in the fort have in most cases, lived there for many generations. This is a story that deserves two hours and we will tell it as we walk through the atmospheric streets and along the ramparts with the ocean crashing against the rocks below.
After our delightful lunch within the fort, our tour gracefully draws to a close. The support vehicle will be awaiting your departure, ready to whisk you away to Colombo City. However, if you're tempted to linger amidst the stunning beaches of Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, or Bentota, fret not. We've got you covered with transport arranged for your convenience. Please note, our transport service extends to these specific areas only. If you have alternative drop-off preferences or wish to book a departure transfer, our dedicated customer service team is just a call away, eager to assist with your travel arrangements.
Special Information: On your final day, enjoy a morning walk through Galle Fort for about an hour, followed by a 30-minute stroll to your last lunch stop before a van transfer to Colombo.

The routes were varied, through really interesting countryside with awesome scenery in the high country, as well as low. We felt we really got a feel of how both rural and urban Sri Lanka lives. A lot of thought and planning has obviously gone into preparing the routes, but also choosing the hotels, which were a welcome haven of luxury after each day.

Later, arrive at your stunning hotel in Nuwara Eliya – an English hill station set in the shadow of Sri Lanka’s tallest mountain, Pidurutalagala. Rug up in the evening with a well-earned dinner by the fire.
Today, take a grand loop through the highlands with an energising descent followed by a sustained and steady climb through surrounding tea plantations. The rest of the day is free to relax at your magnificent beach stay, taking a dip in the pool or at the beach, mere moments away. Relish exquisite breakfast, lunch and dinner at your hotel and soak up the scenery of this tropical paradise.
For your final day of riding, you’ll first drive inland to the quieter roads of the lowland farming communities. From here, weave through the idyllic southern province, passing stalls of coconuts where you can pause for a drink and a chat with the friendly stallholders.
Continue on your scenic voyage until you reach Wijaya Beach, where you’ll sit down over a satisfying slice of pizza. Grab a cold drink and dip your feet in the glittering ocean, taking a moment to appreciate the natural beauty of this vibrant island.
Transfer by van to your hotel in Galle, Sri Lanka’s oldest seaport, then spend your evening reflecting on the whirlwind journey behind you.
Join a guided walk through the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Galle Fort this morning, discovering the long and complex history of this crucial trading port. Witness its story in the melange of colonial architecture as you explore the 16th-century fort, first built by the Portuguese and later expanded by the Dutch and British.
Enjoy one last lunch amongst the fortifications, then wave goodbye to gorgeous Galle as you transfer to Colombo for your post-tour accommodation or onward flight.
Designated a wildlife sanctuary in 1900, Yala is the go-to destination for Sri Lankan animal spotting. Home to numerous endangered species, Yala boasts the highest density of leopards in the world, making for a significant chance to sight this mesmerising big cat.

Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, was the tea-growing jewel of the British Empire. Now the island nation is an explorer’s paradise, full of natural wonder, spectacular wildlife, and an easygoing local culture. Despite its long, intertwining history with India, its larger influential neighbor, the “teardrop” of the Indian Ocean has a style all of its own.
Unspoilt Nature
Sri Lanka doesn’t boast of wildlife encounters, but where else can you see elephants and blue whales on the same trip? The island teems with wildlife of all shapes and sizes, living harmoniously alongside their human cohabitants. Peacocks and monkeys strut along rooftops, white egrits speckle bright green rice fields, and mongoose dart across your path!
Tea Culture
Deep within the heart of the Sri Lanka, a relic of colonialism still thrives. Tea plantations cover the country’s central mountain ranges in thousands of acres of visually stunning spiraling, green domes. Ceylon, as the country was once known, was one of the most prolific producers in the tea industry, and many teas still bare the name today.
Perfect combination of road cycling, culture, nature and delicious local cuisine. This is the way to see Sri Lanka!

The redspokes Sri Lanka Classic cycling holiday begins in west coast Negombo with beaches and sea views. Setting off with a coastal ride we visit markets and fishing communities. We travel cycling towards Kurunegala along a picturesque route passing coconut plantations, toddy tappers and paddy fields on fairly flat wide roads first tarmac and then red dirt track. Reaching ancient capital city Kurunegala, surrounded by imposing mythological 'animal rocks' we continue on to the extraordinary Sigiriya fortress with its series of moats, ramparts and water gardens. Our Sri Lanka cycling adventure continues as we ride on to explore the cultural triangle; the ‘King's Land’ of the ancient Sinhalese, discovering medieval ruins and sacred temples. We enjoy a rest day in beautiful hill station Kandy, the last Sri Lankan stronghold in the 19th century to resist colonial invaders. Set in rainforest with an iconic sacred temple and botanical gardens there is plenty here to see and enjoy. Our Sri Lanka Classic cycling holiday continues as we cycle into the highlands through cloud forest and hill stations arriving at Udawalawe National Park.
We ride on to reach the southern tip of Sri Lanka, arriving at Mirissa, a coastal resort and fishing port with idyllic palm fringed beach. Brief Itinerary
Detailed itinerary.
Day 1 : Negombo
On the day of the tour, our guide will meet you at your hotel in the evening at 17:00hrs. We'll use this time to do a bike fit to ensure that your cycling experience is as comfortable as possible. After that, we'll have a relaxing dinner together and go over the briefing for the tour.
Negombo is a vibrant coastal town with a mix of Dutch and Portuguese architecture and a bustling fish market. If you have time, we recommend exploring the town's canals, beaches, and historic sites. You could also take a boat ride to the nearby Muthurajawela Marsh, which is home to a variety of bird species and other wildlife.
Day 2 : Sigiriya
Today we recommend hitting the road early to avoid the heat. After a short transfer, get ready for the day’s cycling. An easy-paced ride that takes us along the stunning coastal route with stops at fish markets. Later we turn inland and take a shuttle transfer of about 3hrs to Sigiriya.
Sigiriya is a small town named after the large Lion Rock. It was here that King Kasyapa decided to forge his roots, build a palace on a high rock and embellish its sides with frescos. The rock was converted into a Buddhist monastery after the King’s death, right until the 14th century.
Settle in at the Vil Uyana Hotel. The hotel is ensconced between paddy fields, with earthy cottages.
Day 3 : Sigiriya
Start the day with an early morning breakfast and get ready to take a classic loop around Sigiriya visiting Dambulla cave along the way. We start the exploration in the backdrop of the large Lion Rock after which the town was named. We ride along gravel roads following an old irrigation canal to Dambulla, the 2nd century BC Buddhist cave temple. One has to walk up some distance to see the five caves, which still house many ancient Buddha statues.
Post-lunch, head to the 5th-century rock fortress of Sigiriya. The last part of the climb, starting from the ‘lion paw’ is quite steep. The ruins of the palace on the summit are surpassed only by the magnificent aerial view of the surrounding jungle.
Day 4 : Polonnaruwa
Today we go on a journey to uncover the rich history of Sri Lanka as we ride to Polonnaruwa, an ancient kingdom that dates back to the 12th century. Our journey starts with a picturesque ride through a lush forest, surrounded by vibrant greenery. The terrain is mostly flat, with a few gentle rolling patches that add to the adventure.
Upon arriving at Polonnaruwa, we'll be transported back in time as we explore the remains of this once-thriving city. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Polonnaruwa boasts an impressive collection of ancient structures, including the Royal Palace, the Quadrangle, the Gal Vihara, and the Lotus Pond. The city's architectural wonders are renowned for their intricate carvings, beautiful frescoes, and advanced irrigation systems, showcasing the ingenuity of its people.
Later in the evening, we return to the hotel, rejuvenated by the fascinating discoveries of the day. Polonnaruwa is not just a city of historical significance but is also a haven of natural beauty, surrounded by lush forests, lakes, and rivers, providing a perfect destination for those who love adventure and nature. A visit to Polonnaruwa is an unforgettable experience that should not be missed.
Day 5 : Kandy
Start your day in perfect harmony with nature as you wake up to the serene melody of chirping birds. We'll get back on our bikes and set off on an unforgettable ride through a verdant forest, where lush greenery will envelop us in a breathtaking embrace. Along the way, we'll pass by the expansive Minneriya water tank, which will leave us awestruck by its beauty.
Our next destination is the cultural capital of Sri Lanka - Kandy, situated on the picturesque Kandy Plateau, surrounded by rolling hills draped in tea plantations. One of the world's most esteemed Buddhist locations is situated in this city—the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. As we explore the revered halls of the temple, we are captivated by its intricate architecture and awe-inspiring religious artifacts, including the sacred tooth relic believed to be associated with Buddha.
This evening, our accommodation is at Ellerton Bungalow, located approximately 40 minutes from the heart of Kandy. We selected this hotel due to its convenient connection to our next destination. Originally constructed in the early 19th century, Ellerton Bungalow has undergone meticulous restoration, transforming it into a delightful and charming hotel.
Day 6 : Kandy
Today is a rest day and you can plan your own day. Sitting atop a foothill ringfenced by the verdant mountains, the Ellerton Hotel is the ultimate testament to the impeccable Sri Lankan hospitality offered in perfect harmony with nature.
Birds enthusiasts can spot many birds, both endemic and migratory to be seen at Ellerton. The Crimson-fronted Barbet and the Ceylon red-backed woodpecker to name just two. One can observe these on the property or on walks in the surrounding area. Ellerton is actually a birdwatcher's paradise!
Day 7 : Nuwara Eliya
Today's ride promises to be nothing short of breathtaking as we set out on a journey through Sri Lanka's stunning hill country, with its lush tea plantations and sweeping mountain vistas. The route to our destination, the old British tea valley of Nuwara Eliya, is a challenging one, with gradual climbs and a few steep hills to conquer. However, the awe-inspiring scenery, glistening reservoirs, cascading waterfalls, and panoramic views of the majestic mountain ranges make every pedal stroke worth it.
We'll stop for a delectable lunch at a picturesque spot overlooking a stunning waterfall and panoramic landscape. Here, we can take a moment to soak in the beauty of our surroundings and rejuvenate ourselves for the rest of the journey. We continue cycling to Nuwara Eliya, where we'll spend the rest of the day exploring this charming town.
Nuwara Eliya, also known as 'Little England,' is a town that exudes colonial-era charm, with its well-manicured lawns, Victorian-era architecture, and immaculate gardens.
Here we stay at the The Grand. The place still retains its old-world charm with wooden lofts, and old brass fans. Perfect ambiance coupled with exquisite comforts to transport you back to the colonial times of Sri Lanka.
Day 8 : Ella
Today's ride promises to be the highlight of the tour, offering a breathtaking undulating ride from Nuwara Eliya through a diverse range of landscapes. We will pass through lush grasslands, dense forests, dairy farms, and windmills, and stop at Pattipola railway station, the highest railway station in Sri Lanka, situated 1,897 meters above sea level.
The final stretch of the ride includes a challenging 4km uphill climb, leading to Horton Plains, one of Sri Lanka's most popular national parks. This vast expanse of grasslands and thick forests is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including many endemic bird species. We will explore the park's designated trails on foot, including a hike to World's End, a dramatic scenic viewpoint offering panoramic views of the park. The total hike is approximately 8km, and we will also visit Baker's Falls, a stunning waterfall in the park.
If time permits, we will take a downhill ride to Ohiya railway station for lunch, followed by a scenic 90-minute train journey to Ella. Ella is a charming town situated at an elevation of 1,041m, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
Please note that as our arrival time at Ohiya railway station is uncertain, we cannot make advance reservations for 1st class tickets on the train. We will need to purchase on-the-spot tickets, which are available only for the 2nd and 3rd class.
Day 9 : Ella
Today spend the day at leisure. If you're still up for an activity, hike to Little Adam's Peak and Nine Arch Bridge, both easily accessible from Ella. Enjoy panoramic views of lush green hills and valleys, and take in the beauty of the impressive Nine Arch Bridge, a railway viaduct that dates back to the British colonial era.
Day 10 : Koslanda
Start your morning with an invigorating hike to Little Adam's Peak and Nine Arch Bridge, both easily accessible from Ella. Enjoy panoramic views of lush green hills and valleys, and take in the beauty of the impressive Nine Arch Bridge, a railway viaduct that dates back to the British colonial era.
After the hike, start riding towards Koslanda, passing through forests, grasslands, and teak plantations. The initial descent can be steep, so we'll proceed with caution. After arriving at the base, continue riding uphill to Koslanda, known for its lush green landscapes, rolling hills, tea plantations, and scenic beauty.
Day 11 : Udawalawe National Park
Commence your journey towards Belihuloya, traversing through verdant forests. Upon reaching the summit, exercise extra care while descending as the terrain will become notably steep on your way to Udawalawe. The landscape along the route from Koslanda to Udawalawe offers a captivating mix of forests and rural villages.
Day 12 : Tangalle
Start day with an exciting safari adventure in Udawalawe National Park. The park is home to hundreds of Sri Lankan elephants, as well as other wild animals such as leopards, deer, and buffalo. With well-planned safaris and knowledgeable guides, you'll have a chance to observe these magnificent creatures up close in their natural habitat.
Late morning, we'll set off towards Tangalle, cycling along one of the beautiful irrigation canals that flow towards the southern coast. Along the way, we'll pass through lush banana plantations, providing a refreshing change of scenery from the mountainous terrain of the past few days. Cycling through the countryside will give us an opportunity to soak in the rural lifestyle and connect with the local culture.
As we approach Tangalle, the air becomes warm and humid, with the salty scent of the sea in the distance. After a long day of cycling, there's nothing quite like relaxing on the beach and taking in the beautiful surroundings of Tangalle.
Upon arrival in Tangalle, we will check into the luxurious Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort. The resort is nestled in a coconut plantation and boasts a stunning beachfront location. It is the perfect place to immerse yourself in the beauty and tranquility of Sri Lanka's southern coast.
Day 13 : Colombo via Galle
Today, we go on a beautiful coastal and interior trail as we ride toward Galle after a short transfer. The stunning views of the ocean and the gentle sea breeze keep us company throughout the ride. As we make our way toward Galle, we will pass through charming coastal villages and verdant countryside landscapes.
Post-lunch, explore the historic Galle Fort on foot. The fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is one of the best-preserved colonial-era fortifications in Asia. As we walk through the narrow streets and alleys, we will discover an abundance of Dutch and Portuguese architectural gems, museums, and cathedrals. The picturesque coastline also provides a perfect opportunity to relax on the sunny beaches and soak in the beautiful surroundings.
Extend at Galle/Tangalle and spend the days at leisure or transport to the Colombo International Airport for your onward journey.

With a tropical climate, Sri Lanka has two cycles of monsoon which bring rain to the west and south-west coastal lines from May to September, and between October and February, it rains in northern regions and east coastline. Although the rains are generally short, with occasional heavy downpours.
Leaving out the monsoon season, the remaining months receive plenty of sunshine and are mostly dry. Temperatures remain fairly consistent year-round, with coastal regions averaging from 25 to 32°C and the mountain regions from 15 to 20°C. Sri Lanka is humid as well with relative humidity ranging between 60% & 90%.
Predominantly, Sri Lanka is almost a year-round cycling destination and our bike tours run around the year.
Most travelers require a visa to visit Sri Lanka. The process for acquiring one is relatively straightforward. For trips to Sri Lanka of up to 30 days, visas, also known as ETAs (Electronic Travel Authorization), can be obtained from the government’s Department of Immigration and Emigration website . The Electronic Travel Authorization System is available online or at the port of entry. Visitors are strongly urged to use the online system to avoid lengthy delays at the port of entry.

Six reasons to tour Sri Lanka by motorcycle
If the idea of touring a tropical island paradise by motorbike tickles your fancy, then Sri Lanka is the destination for you.
Located off the south east coast of India, it has all the ingredients for a proper biking adventure, including jungle-covered mountain passes, winding routes through cloud forests, and the remnants of ancient civilisations to explore.
And in your down time there just happens to be an abundance of palm-fringed beaches, turquoise seas and glorious sunshine to enjoy.
All this can be experienced from the saddle of a Royal Enfield Classic 350 with travel experts Extreme Bike Tours who have teamed up with ABR to bring you six reasons to tour Sri Lanka by motorcycle.
1. Be different
Chances are you and your mates have ridden the Alps, conquered the Pyrenees and perhaps have even caught the boat to Morocco and explored a little of North Africa. These are all epic places to ride but they are regular stomping grounds for European-based riders. However, how many people do you know who have ridden through a jungle in Sri Lanka?
Think of the tales you could tell next time you’re at a biker cafe and the talk inevitably turns to touring destinations. You’ll have people hanging off your every word.
2. The beaches of the south coast
Adventure riders don’t tend to do beach holidays. There are far too many roads to ride and places to explore to waste our time sipping cocktails on the sand for a fortnight. But that doesn’t mean we don’t appreciate a cold beer while watching the sunset over the ocean after a long day in the saddle.
There are not many better places to do this than Sri Lanka. People flock from across the world to experience the island’s south beaches. Think golden sands lapped by the gentle rhythm of the Indian Ocean, and maybe the sight of a nest of baby turtles hatching in front of you. It’s almost enough to get you thinking about a beach holiday after all.
3. The landscape
What Sri Lanka lacks in size (it is four times smaller than the UK), it certainly makes up for in natural beauty. Picture yourself riding through a mystical cloud forest, or through the jungle-covered mountains of the island’s interior.
For mile upon glorious mile you’ll soak up views of lush tea plantations, interspersed by waterfalls cascading down giant cliff faces. Be sure to stop for a tea tasting. If your brew tastes familiar, that could be because tea leaves grown in Sri Lanka are used to by the likes of PG Tips and Yorkshire tea.
4. The wildlife
From whales breaching and dolphins playing, to elephants wandering along the road and leopards basking in the sun, the wildlife puts on quite a show in Sri Lanka. There are plenty of opportunities for close encounters either from the saddle, or on a safari or boat tour. If getting up close and personal with an elephant is on your bucket list, then take a trip to the Millennium Elephant Foundation and help give one a bath.
5. World Heritage Sites
The Ancient City of Sigiriya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At the summit of this 180m-high granite peak sit the ruins of an ancient civilisation. If you are feeling energetic after a few days in the saddle, you can climb to the top and experience this link to Sri Lanka’s ancient past while taking in one of the best views on the island.
In fact, there are eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites on Sri Lanka, including the Ancient City of Polonnaruwa, the Golden Temple of Dambulla, and the Sinharaja Forest Reserve, which provide plenty to explore off the bike.
6. It’s a tropical paradise
The UK winter is already making us crave some sunshine and blue skies. The thought of cruising on a tour of Sri Lanka on a Royal Enfield feeling the heat warming our faces sounds pretty darn good right now. Throw in some unforgettable mountain roads, lush rain forests and the pristine waters of the Indian Ocean, and we may well be about to book a holiday with Extreme Bike Tours ourselves.
