"Broadway's next hit musical" now playing at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts

By Dillon Thomas

Updated on: June 17, 2024 / 12:43 PM MDT / CBS Colorado

One of the funniest and most unique productions of 2024 is now showing at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. "Broadway's Next Biggest Hit," a mashup of improv, comedy and a musical, is currently on stage at the Garner Galleria in Denver.

The show, which has been on tour for several years, is making its first stop at the DCPA. The show, at its core, is a spoof of The Tony Awards which aired on CBS News Colorado Sunday evening. However, in this made-up award show, the cast is competing for the "Phony Awards."

Guests are asked to fill out a card as they walk into the theatre, placing a name of a made-up song they would like the performers to create a song about. Then, the audience is asked to vote, by applause, for whichever made-up song was their favorite as intermission begins.

"The first half of our show is an awards parody show, and the second half is a full production of whatever song won. It is a blend of standup comedy, improv comedy, musical improv and live music," said Greg Triggs, emcee for the show.

The cast members are very quick with their comedy, given no time to prepare for the songs they have to sing. They simply reach into a fishbowl filled with song submissions from the audience, and the music begins the second they read the title off the card.

tonys-broadway-next-hit-pkg-frame-3441.jpg

"And then the chaos ensues," said Rob Schiffman, one of the improv actors known as "presenters." The energy is phenomenal. Every time we perform in Colorado the energy is phenomenal."

The first half of the show features many improvised songs, with around one dozen of the audience's submissions being incorporated into the songs before intermission.

When CBS News Colorado's Dillon Thomas attended the cast blindsided him, calling on Thomas to come on stage without any warning. They then asked him a series of questions about his life, like where he was from and what his hobbies are. From there they created four songs on the spot, making Thomas and the entire audience laugh nonstop.

Deb Rabbai, a presenter, compared their nightly performances to being on a professional sporting team. While those athletes can practice their skills, there is no way to know exactly what is going to happen at what time during any given game. She said that is the same for improv, noting they can be skilled in singing, comedy, acting, and more. However, on the stage, there is no way to prepare for what is going to happen until it unfolds live.

"We don't know exactly what is going to happen, but we are well versed in learning how to create a melody, rhyming, listening to each other and making each other look good," Rabbai said.

How often do you read those cards and you are laughing at those just as much as the audience?" Thomas asked the team.

"About 80% f the time," said Pat Swearingen, a presenter. "I'm probably the worst at breaking on stage. I do it most of the show. But, it is fun."

"It is a reminder to the audience that we are playing with each other, we are making it up, we don't know what is going to happen. We are laughing just as much as they are, we are all in this together," Schiffman said.

Putting them to the test live on tape, Thomas decided to throw some curveballs at them to see what songs they came up with.

"Sometimes we get song titles that are very specific to the town we are performing in," said Heidi Gleichauf, a presenter.

tonys-broadway-next-hit-pkg-frame-1119.jpg

"Sounds like we should give that a test now," Thomas said.

From there, Thomas threw out three different song titles. One was, "CBS News Colorado reporters cover the Tony's first." The second was titled, "The Broncos have multiple new quarterbacks." The final song was titled, "I can't get into Casa Bonita, yet."

With ease, the artists created three different songs that made everyone laugh. If you would like to see those songs unedited and in-full, visit CBS News Colorado's Instagram page.

Adding one additional layer of challenge to the mix, pianist and musical director Gary Adler, who is also on stage, randomly decides what genre of music they will have to sing to.

"And then all a sudden I will play a tango, and because I am playing a tango they have to go with a tango," Adler said.

Tickets for "Broadway's Next Hit Musical" are on sale now, if you would like to purchase them visit DCPA's official ticket website .

Crime and public safety | police fatally shoot woman with knife in downtown denver, officials say, the denver police department reported the shooting around 1 p.m. sunday.

A photo of a woman named Julianna O'Clair

The shooting happened near North Broadway and Lawrence Street, according to a 12:53 p.m. post by the Denver Police Department on X .

Denver police officers received two calls about a woman allegedly holding a knife and standing in the intersection of North Broadway and Lawrence Street around 11:45 a.m., according to a 2:42 p.m. video update by Denver police Chief Ron Thomas.

When officers arrived, they told the woman to drop the weapon, which was a “very large, hunting-style knife,” Thomas said. The woman allegedly refused and came toward the officers while still holding the knife, Thomas said.

The officers fired a Taser at the woman twice, but she began advancing faster, according to Thomas’ update. Three officers fired several rounds and shot the suspect.

An ambulance arrived at the scene within two minutes of the incident and the woman received medical aid, police said. She died at the scene and her identity has not yet been publicly released, according to the department.

The shooting is under investigation by the Colorado State Patrol, Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the Denver Police Department. The involved officers will be “taken offline and put through a reintegration process” before returning to full duty, according to the update.

Part of Lawrence Street is closed for the investigation and police recommend finding an alternate route.

Updated: Jun 19, 2024 / 07:51 AM MDT

DENVER ( KDVR ) — The British Invasion is coming to Denver on Thursday as thousands are expected to fill Empower Field at Mile High for The Rolling Stones concert.

The legendary rock band is back with the “Stones Tour 2024 Hackney Diamonds.”

If you have tickets to see Mick Jagger, 80, Keith Richards, 79, and Ronnie Wood, 76, the Regional Transportation District is prepared to connect you to Empower Field without dealing with the hassle of traffic and parking.

“The concert venue’s close proximity to a number of bus stops and rail stations makes public transit a safe and ideal way to access the stadium,” said RTD.

Those who plan on using public transportation to get to Empower Field are encouraged to download RTD’s “Next Ride” app and use the trip planning tool to see all the options. RTD said riders can type in “Rolling Stones” in the destination field to navigate all the available train and bus routes.

Rail service options

According to RTD, before and after the concert, there will be rail lines running regularly between Union Station and Empower Field.

The D, E, H and W lines directly serve Empower Field while the A, B, G and N lines go to Union Station.

  • W Line (30-minute frequency): 11:52 p.m., 12:22 a.m., 12:52 a.m.
  • E Line (60-minute frequency): 11:55 p.m., 12:55 a.m., 1:55 a.m.

  • B Line: 11:09 p.m.
  • G Line: 12:01 a.m.
  • N Line: 10:56 p.m.

Bus service options

Fans can also take the RTD buses to the concert.

According to RTD, the buses that operate near Empower Field are Route 30 (South Federal Boulevard) and Route 31 (North Federal Boulevard.) The 1, 15L, 16 and 31 will also serve the Decatur and Federal RTD Station.

“For customers looking to easily transfer to the D, E, H or W lines at Denver Union Station, the Flatiron Flyer, 0, 9, 10, 15, 20, and 32 are all options,” said RTD.

Park-n-ride options

If you do not live within walking distance of a bus or train stop, RTD offers a plethora of park-n-rides where you can park your car and hop on public transportation for easy access to Empower Field.

RTD has a list of the park-n-rides available across the metro.

While public transportation may be an easier and safer option, especially if you plan on enjoying a beverage or two while you listen to The Rolling Stones, be aware of RTD’s maintenance projects.

RTD said the light rail trains that run through the southeast corridor will run on a regular schedule, but speed restrictions will be in place. The southeast corridor runs along Interstate 25 from Broadway in Denver to Ridgegate Parkway in Lone Tree.

Redwood, a new, original musical starring Tony Award-winner  Idina Menzel , will premiere on Broadway next year at a theater-to-be-announced. Written and directed by Tony Award nominee Tina Landau , with music by Kate Diaz, and lyrics by Diaz and Landau, Redwood is conceived by Landau and Menzel, with additional contributions by Menzel.   “I’m so thrilled to be returning to Broadway, and the fact that I get to do it with Redwood, a musical that means so much to me, makes it even more special,” Menzel said. “This show has lived in my bones for fifteen years, from the very first time Tina and I discussed working together. Finally getting to do it on Broadway is really a dream come true.”

Read more: What did our critic think of Redwood at La Jolla Playhouse?   Redwood is a transportive new musical about one woman’s journey into the precious and precarious world of the redwood forest. Jesse (Menzel) is a successful businesswoman, mother and wife who seems to have it all, but inside, her heart is broken. Finding herself at a turning point, Jesse leaves everyone and everything behind, gets in her car and drives… Thousands of miles later, she hits the majestic forests of Northern California, where a chance meeting and a leap of faith change her life forever. With its deeply personal story, refreshingly contemporary sound, and awe-inspiring design, Redwood explores the lengths –and heights– one travels to find strength, resilience and healing.
