Experiences in vilnius, introducing vilnius.

Vilnius , Lithuanian capital, is a fascinating, beautiful, bewitching town that attracts travelers for its ‘old city’ charisma. The conflicted and tragic history of the country and its capital means that a trip to Vilnius will be an unforgettable experience in which wars and conflicts of the past can be remembered and the spirit of freedom and resistance that filled the town during the Soviet occupation can be discovered.

Vilnius somehow remains a city of artists and dreamers as well as the wealthiest city in Lithuania.

While there you will want to visit Gedimias Hill that is the spot the city was first founded on, as well as the Erzsébetváros & the Jewish Quarter to learn more about Lithuana, and Europe’s, tragic history. Another sight to see, related to the darker part of European history, is Stalin Park, otherwise known as Grutas Park , a Lithuanian open-air sculpture garden with relics from the times of the Lithuanian SSR.

On the other hand the Gates of Dawn , the last standing gate of ancient Vilnius, will give you an idea of the ancient city along with the Chapel of the Blessed Virgin , both dating back to the 16th century.

A visit to Lithuania and its capital will surely fill your time with much to see, learn and feel.

A great value luxury break in vilnius, now with michelin-star dining.

If you are looking for a good value city break in Europe, with history, fine dining, and fantastic food, Vilnius has just been put firmly on the foodie map. This June, the Michelin Guide awarded its first Michelin stars to four Vilnius restaurants: Džiaugsmas, Demo, Pas Mus, and Nineteen18. In total, 34 Lithuanian restaurants were included in the Michelin Guide.

Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, was also recently named Europe’s cheapest city break in a survey of 37 cities by the UK’s Post Office Travel Money, so you can enjoy a luxury break on the cheap.

Getting there and around

Most direct flights from the UK are operated by low-cost airlines apart from LOT from London City. If low cost is not for you, Finnair may be the best option via Helsinki which is an easy airport to connect through, with 35 minutes being the minimum connection time. Finnair uses its modern long-haul aircraft once or twice a day from London with its new seats including the innovative business class flatbed Air Lounge seat. Finnair also flies from Manchester and Edinburgh to Vilnius via Helsinki.

Finnair's Air Lounge seat

Most sites in Vilnius are walkable, but there is also public transport in the form of buses, trams and trains. Uber and Bolt are available at very reasonable prices, with a trip from the airport costing around $8.50 (€8).

The best place to stay is within or close to the old town where most of the fine dining restaurants, trendy cocktail bars, and historic sites are located.

Hotel Pacai reception

There are plenty of luxury hotels to stay at, with many being in grand historic buildings. If you prefer your historic buildings with a modern but sympathetic touch, Hotel Pacai (part of Marriott Bonvoy’s Design Hotels group) has a great location on the edge of the Old Town close to the Town Hall. Most of the restaurants and bars opened are around 5 minutes walk from the hotel as are many of the attractions. Rooms are strikingly modern with useful Molton Brown gifts at turndown, and the hotel features a spa and fine dining restaurant.

Hotel Pacai room

The opulent Relais & Chateaux Stikliai Hotel is housed in a meticulously restored 16th-century building and provides more classic surroundings. Alternatively, the Grand Hotel Vilnius, part of the Curio Collection by Hilton boasts an enviable location opposite Cathedral Square and Gediminas Tower.

For something completely different, you can now stay at the top of the Vilnius TV Tower which is taller than the Eiffel tower. Each suite boasts panoramic views from the floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the rooms.

What to see

Old Town, Vilnius, Lithuania

Start your sightseeing with a walking tour of Vilnius's UNESCO-listed Old Town, a captivating labyrinth of cobblestone streets with Baroque architecture. A visit to the University and Vilnius Cathedral, will allow you to understand Lithuania's rich Catholic heritage. Pause for a refreshment stop and some people watching at one of the pavement cafes which specialise in anything from champagne to chocolate.

For a panoramic view of Vilnius, visit the Gediminas Castle Tower in the center of the city, which can be reached either by a short hike or a convenient funicular ride. Alternatively, for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, Vilnius is one of the few cities where you can take a hot air balloon ride over the old city.

Hot air balloons flying over Vilnius, Lithuania

Lithuania has a rich history of triumph over adversity. The country first rose to prominence in the 13th century under the reign of Mindaugas, forming the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. However, partitions by neighboring empires in the 18th century led to a period of Russian occupation. The 20th century saw Lithuania reclaim its independence in 1918, only to face occupations by both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union again. Finally, in 1990, Lithuania finally restored its sovereignty.

The Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights (KGB) museum is worth a visit to understand the Russian occupation of Lithuania. It is certainly not for the faint-hearted as it includes the former jail and death chamber where political prisoners were kept and executed.

For something more light-hearted, immerse yourself in Lithuanian art at the National Gallery, or delve into the city's vibrant contemporary scene at the MO Museum.

Trakai castle

Situated only 30 minutes away by public transport, a visit to Trakai is a must. The charming town boasts the fairytale Trakai Island Castle, which you can explore with its imposing towers and grand halls. The 14th-century castle was once the home of Lithuanian royalty. Around the lake itself, there are plenty of activities, such as boat tours and a scenic backdrop for a traditional lunch. Trakai is also home to many of the Karaite community, and you can have a go at making their traditional kybyns pastries which are a bit like a Cornish pasty. You also get to eat the tasty pastries afterwards.

Where to eat and drink

Around the old town there are numerous restaurants to meet all budgets and tastes. You must try some traditional food, including the popular cold pink soup, which is also extremely healthy and is made with kefir and beetroot. It is so loved that it even has its own festival. To balance out the healthiness, a popular bar snack is the Lithuanian equivalent of garlic bread. The addictive deep friend bread treat is made with strips of dark rye bread deep fried in oil and generously seasoned with crushed garlic and salt. At Lokys restaurant, hearty local dishes such as roast boar or even beaver are served alongside a delicious pink soup. Bring your appetite for this venue!

Vilnius also boasts a flourishing fine-dining scene, offering innovative takes on traditional Lithuanian fare. Nineteen18 , which recently became known as a Michelin star, only offers a tasting menu with optional wine pairings in an elegant setting. Ingredients come straight from the restaurant’s farm, or foraged nearby. Prices are reasonable at $100 (€94) for the tasting menu. Standouts include a playful take on donuts inspired by Homer Simpson and a tender beef fillet served with pickled blackcurrants that taste similar to capers.

Nineteen18 beef dish

If you like some theatrics with your food, Amandus is the place to go, and it has plenty of fun touches in its shorter tasting menu for $85 (€80). For something modern but casual, try Augustin with its plant-focused sharing plates. Save room for the naughty caramel apple tart for dessert.

There is also a thriving cocktail scene in the town with Nick and Nora offering modern twists on classic cocktails, such as the Bloody Mary with spicy Lithuanian Horseradish schnapps for an extra kick! Nomads is situated almost next to Hotel Pacai and has an elegant, luxurious feel. The bar serves innovative, modern cocktails with numbered flavor profiles, but they will also make classic cocktails as well. If you want to enjoy a view with your drinks, head to the bar at the top of the Vilnius TV Tower, which also serves snacks.

Vilnius is still a relatively unknown destination, so now is the time to visit as the city enters the spotlight thanks to the tremendous value it offers alongside a burgeoning food and drink scene.

Review: The Big Bus Tour in New York City

I absolutely loved the Big Bus Tour in New York City. It’s the best way to go sightseeing in an open-top, hop-on hop-off, top-rated tour and explore the best New York attractions !

If this is your first-time visiting New York and you want to see all the top landmarks, this double-decker tour bus will take you there.

The Big Bus Tour in New York

You may be wondering if a hop-on hop-off bus is worth it. Absolutely, yes!

If you consider the time and money spent on transportation costs, waiting for buses, navigating the subway (which can be confusing for visitors), and getting from one point of interest to another, it is worth every dollar!

I had a great visit to New York City on Big Bus Tour. My goal was to show the city to some friends from Italy who were visiting the US for the first time.

Since we only had about two days to spend together, the hop-on hop-off was undoubtedly the best decision.

From our experience, we’ll answer commonly asked questions about the Hop-on Hop-off bus while visiting New York City.

Google Reviews

Why take the big bus tour in new york.

While seeing New York from the open-top deck of the double-decker bus, the city unfolded block by block with panoramic views from every angle.

As we traveled through the streets, the sights were unobstructed and new visual backdrops were revealed.

The towering skyscrapers and colorful billboards filled the air with excitement and as the cityscape continued to change, it gave a grand feeling to the experience.

I especially enjoyed being able to relax from the upper deck of the bus while taking in the energy of city scenes.

Because I also live in a large city, the rhythm felt familiar from the elevated vantage point .

Car horns were honking, crowds traversed through the streets and there was an endless hum of activity.

Best of all, the tour gave me the chance to interact with other travelers who were seeing New York while waiting for the tour to began.

We struck up conversations and exchanged stories, insights, and recommendations during our stay in New York.

How Much is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The regular price of an adult and child ticket is $60.00 and $50.00, respectively. However, you can use the link below for discounted fares.

Get discounts for the Big Bus Tour NYC  here .

How Long is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The round-trip New York City Big Bus Tour takes about two hours from start to finish.

The bus is the perfect solution for visitors worldwide because they offer pre-recorded audio narratives and translations in five languages — French, German, Spanish, Italian, and English.

Are There Toilets on the Big Bus

No. Unlike charter buses, you won’t travel long between stops. So the best thing to do is exit at a stop, find a public restroom, see an attraction, if desired, and then catch the next bus.

If you are not sure where to find one, ask a Big Bus guide on the street. The driver may also have some suggestions.

Charter buses come equipped with a bathroom because travel is expected to be for a much longer period.

How Does the Big Bus Tour Work in New York City

The tour offers three options for purchase — 1-day, 2-day, and 3-day.

When you decide the number of days of your tour and purchase your ticket, the clock starts when your ticket is scanned while boarding the bus for the first time.

The ticket is good for 24, 48, or 72 hours. So, if you have a 1-day ticket and board the bus at 11:00 AM on Monday, it can still be used until 11:00 AM on Tuesday.

We found a ton of touring options for sightseeing in New York.

Aside from the extended period, the 2 and 3-day tickets also offer discounted bike rentals.

The buses run every 20 minutes on average. However, the first stop at the M&M store can be a long wait during peak season.

You can exit or board at any of the designated stops as much as you want.

The only exclusion is the one-loop tour Night Tour which is a panoramic non-stop tour.

Where to Catch the Big Bus Tour in New York City

During the tour, the buses only stop at designated stops.

Your ticket is good for as long as the buses operate during the day and it may be used on both the red and blue routes.

When you board, make sure you get a hop-on hop-off New York bus route map!

Big Bus NYC Red Route

The red route sightseeing tour covers lower Manhattan and you’ll see many landmarks like St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Wall Street, the Chrysler Building, and General Grant’s Tomb.

You can catch a tour at any one of the following bus stops and you can get your tickets in advance of boarding.

1 – M&M’s World – 7th Ave & W 48th St (Outside M&M World & Majestic Deli)

2 – Times Square East – W 42nd St & Broadway (at Knickerbocker Hotel)

3 – Empire State Building / Korea Town – 5th Ave & W 32nd St (at CVS Pharmacy)

4 – Flatiron District – 5th Ave & W 23rd St (at Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop)

5 – SoHo – Broadway and Spring Street (at Nike Store)

10 – Circle Line Sightseeing – 12th Ave & 40th St (opposite Pier 81)

11 – Times Square North – 7th Ave & W 50th St (at Majestic Deli)

Big Bus NYC Blue Route

The blue route covers upper Manhattan, and half of the ride is mostly views of Central Park. You can switch to the blue route at red stop #2.

We recommend changing routes at stop #11 (the Majestic Deli) where you can take a break and have a nice lunch.

12 – The Metropolitan Museum of Art – 5th Ave & E 83rd St (near 83rd St)

13 – Central Park Zoo – 5th Ave & E 66th St (opposite 845 5th Ave)

The bus has two levels, the upper level offers panoramic views of the city but be careful of overhanging traffic lights and trees. Don’t stand while the bus is in motion.

  • After you find a seat, check the audio to confirm it is working.
  • Snacks are allowed. Bring a frozen bottle of water and protein bites to keep you energized.
  • When on the upper deck, cover up with sunscreen to protect your skin on hot sunny days.
  • If you are a family of 3 or more, take seats across from one another so you’ll have views and photos from both sides of the bus.

Tourists were lined up at stop #1 at least an hour before departure and the line extended the entire block and rounded the corner.

We decided to see other points of interest and returned around 11:00 AM.

The wait to board the bus was about 20 minutes. It was a relaxing ride and there we saw so much!

By the time we reached stop #9, we were pumped and ready to exit the bus so that we could explore the city! And you probably will be too.

Here’s the secret sauce that really made the experience memorable. Exit at stop #9 and take a FREE ferry to Staten Island.

To see the Statue of Liberty, stand on the left side of the boat. When returning, stand on the right side.

Final Thoughts About the Big Bus Tour in New York City

Overall, the tour was a pleasant way to see New York city and when you are on the upper deck, you hardly notice the traffic.

Some other advantages of seeing the city by bus include:

  • Avoiding parking hassles. I mean, who actually drives in New York?!
  • Photo opportunities. With the open-top or large windows, you have excellent photo opportunities as you pass by iconic landmarks and cityscapes.
  • Comprehensive sightseeing of major landmarks and attractions within two hours.
  • You can get local recommendations from the guides who operate the bus.

I usually opt for a hop-on hop-off bus when I am short on time or to get my bearings in the city before deciding what to do.

Either way, when you take the tour bus, it doesn’t appear impossible to take a bite out of the Big Apple.

Happy Travels!

Take Back Title IX Summer 2024 bus tour visits Utah capitol

Tour is traveling the country to challenge new title ix regulations and ‘protect women’s sports’.

city tour vilnius bus

By Jackson Payne

The Independent Women’s Forum brought its Take Back Title IX bus tour to Salt Lake City Tuesday as part of the Our Bodies, Our Sports movement, which claims to be the “largest and most ideologically diverse women’s movement of our time.”

More than 70 local residents came to the Utah capitol to welcome and mingle with the bus of activists involved with the movement, which aims to “protect women’s sports, (and) call attention to the Biden administration’s Title IX regulations and the devastating impact the new rules will have on women and the growing threat to women’s equal athletic opportunity, privacy, and safety,” the tour’s website reads.

The tour features a number of former NCAA athletes and coaches who are sharing their experiences in athletics to raise support for increased protection for women’s sports under Title IX, including enforcing single-sex spaces such as bathrooms and locker rooms.

“Every single story of the ladies featured on this tour is unique, important and must be heard,” said Brianna Howard, the Independent Women’s Forum’s external relations manager who currently manages the bus tour. “They’re making change and it’s important that their voices be heard.”

Among the women on the tour is Kim Russell, who was terminated from her position as head coach of the Oberlin College women’s lacrosse program in 2023 after a lengthy period of conflict with the school following her public comments regarding transgender individuals competing in college athletics.

“We are erasing all women to make a male who identifies as a woman feel comfortable,” Russell told the Deseret News. “We are putting all women in harm’s way in order to make one male who feels uncomfortable feel comfortable. That is not kind. There are only two sexes, and if we don’t come back to that basic truth, women will be erased.

“We are here specifically to bring the truth. When people say this isn’t about inclusion, it is. We are about the inclusion of women. We are about the inclusion of every human being. The truth is, there are two sexes, and kindness is telling the truth.”

The Independent Women’s Forum does not view the issues driving the bus tour as political, citing support received from members all across the political spectrum.

“Defending common sense and sex-based rights for women should not be political, and historically has not been as political as it is now, but we have folks who just do not understand what a woman is or refuse to define what a woman is, and it’s why we’re here,” Howard said. “We shouldn’t have to have this tour, but unfortunately we’re doing this so women from future generations and current generations have the protections they need under the law.”

The bus tour began May 29 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and continued on to Las Vegas Wednesday, wrapping up June 28 in Nashville. The Salt Lake City event was officially hosted by the Utah Eagle Forum.
