Acatraz island tour and tickets.

Alcatraz: for over 150 years, the name has given the innocent chills and the guilty cold sweats. Over the decades, it’s been a military prison, a forbidding maximum-security penitentiary and disputed territory between Native American activists and the FBI. No wonder that first step you take onto ‘the Rock’ seems to cue ominous music: dunh-dunh-dunnnnh!

It’s also no wonder that Alcatraz garners 1.4 million visitors each year. With easy access from a major city, a thrilling and unexpected history, and stunning views of the San Francisco skyline, The Rock remains one of the most visited national parks in the US system. But for much of Alcatraz’s history, this was a place people worked very hard to escape – not spend a pleasant afternoon with their families.

Alcatraz Island tickets San Francisco Tour

In 1972, the National Park Service purchased Alcatraz along with Fort Mason from the U.S. Army to establish the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Under “An Act to Establish the Golden Gate National Recreation Area” President Richard Nixon allocated $120 million for land acquisition and development of the area. It has since been under the direction of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and now operates as a tourist site and museum dedicated to its time as a federal penitentiary. Operating costs still remain one of its biggest challenges today.

The history of alcatraz.

It all started innocently enough back in 1775, when Spanish lieutenant Juan Manuel de Ayala sailed the San Carlos past the 22-acre island he called Isla de Alcatraces (Isle of the Pelicans). In 1859 a new post on Alcatraz became the first US West Coast fort, and soon proved handy as a holding pen for Civil War deserters, insubordinates and those who had been court-martialed.

Among the prisoners were Native American scouts and ‘unfriendlies,’ including 19 Hopis who refused to send their children to government boarding schools, where speaking Hopi and practicing their religion were punishable by beatings. By 1902 the four cell blocks of wooden cages were rotting, unsanitary and otherwise ill-equipped for the influx of US soldiers convicted of war crimes in the Philippines. The army began building a new concrete military prison in 1909, but upkeep was expensive and the US soon had other things to worry about: WWI, financial ruin and flappers.

When the 18th Amendment to the Constitution declared selling liquor a crime in 1922, rebellious Jazz Agers weren’t prepared to give up their tipple – and gangsters kept the booze coming. Authorities were determined to make a public example of criminal ringleaders, and in 1934 the Federal Bureau of Prisons took over Alcatraz as a prominent showcase for its crime-fighting efforts.

‘The Rock’ averaged only 264 inmates, but its roster read like an America’s Most Wanted list. A-list criminals doing time on Alcatraz included Chicago crime boss Al ‘Scarface’ Capone, dapper kidnapper George ‘Machine Gun’ Kelly, hot-headed Harlem mafioso and sometime poet ‘Bumpy’ Johnson, and Morton Sobell, the military contractor found guilty of Soviet espionage along with Julius and Ethel Rosenberg.

One of the prison’s most famous residents was Robert Franklin Stroud, also known as the Birdman for his hobby of studying and caring for birds while in solitary confinement at Leavenworth before being transferred to The Rock. He became famous as portrayed by Burt Lancaster in 1962 film The Birdman of Alcatraz, a fictionalization of the so-called Battle of Alcatraz, a failed 1946 escape plot by convict Bernard Coy and other inmates that turned into a deadly standoff.

Today, first-person accounts of daily life in the Alcatraz lockup are included on the award-winning audio tour provided by Alcatraz Cruises. But take your headphones off for just a moment and notice the sound of carefree city life traveling across the water: this is the torment that made perilous escapes into riptides worth the risk. Though Alcatraz was considered escape-proof, in 1962 the Anglin brothers and Frank Morris floated away on a makeshift raft and were never seen again. Security and upkeep proved prohibitively expensive, and finally the island prison was abandoned to the birds in 1963.

Alcatraz Island, byname The Rock, rocky island in San Francisco Bay, California, U.S. The island occupies an area of 22 acres (9 hectares) and is located 1.5 miles (2 km) offshore.

The island had little vegetation and was a seabird habitat when it was explored in 1775 by Lieutenant Juan Manuel de Ayala, who named it Isla de los Alcatraces (“Isle of the Pelicans”). Sold in 1849 to the U.S. government, Alcatraz was the site of the first lighthouse (1854) on the coast of California. Thereafter other buildings were erected on the island, and the first permanent army detachment was garrisoned there in 1859. In 1861 the island was designated a residence for military offenders. Later prisoners included some 19 Hopi Indians from the Arizona Territory who passively resisted government attempts to assimilate them and American soldiers fighting in the Philippines who had joined the Filipino cause in 1900. In 1907 the island was designated the Pacific Branch of the United States Military Prison.

Visiting Alcatraz - Tours and Tickets

Alcatraz is open every day except Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Year’s day. Advance tickets are recommended as it’s such a popular attraction, particularly during peak season. A ferry cruise is required to reach Alcatraz from Piers 31-33 in downtown San Francisco, and the fee includes both transportation and entry.

The hours of operation vary with the season. Departures are available about every half hour throughout the day beginning at 8:45am. Evening tours, Behind the Scenes Tours, and combined Angel Island-Alcatraz Island tours are also available on a set schedule. Alcatraz frequently sells out in advance, as much as a month or more in summer and near holidays.

We prebooked the Alcatraz tour before leaving home because we heard it could sell out. Our tour time was 12noon so we left the hotel about 1030am. We rode the MUNI bus to Fisherman's Wharf and got off at Pier 19. From there we met the nicest tour guide that directed us to either walk 20 mins to Pier 35 or catch the trolley. The historic trolley was coming to us in about 10 mins. We got on and got to pier 35 with tickets in hand. They were boarding the ferry around 1115am for an 1130 departure. We were early. The ferry took off at noon and it was a nice breezy day on the water. We got to Alcatraz and they let us know to check the departure times on the board. The ferry leaves on time. If you are one minute late, you are 29 mins early for the next one. We had to walk up three levels of ramps to get to the cell blocks in order to get the audio tour. I really enjoyed the audio tour. The sound was great and was narrated in great detail. As you went from cell to cell, the narrator instructed you on where to go and what to look for. Many interesting stories about the inmates, the procedures and even escape attempts. Very good history lesson. The tour was over after an hour and a half but you could continue to explore. We trekked back down the hill and caught the next ferry. They served food and drinks on the ferry if you wished to purchase. It's a short ride with plenty of seating inside and out. Definitely recommend.

After half a dozen visits to San Francisco for work, I finally made it out to 'The Rock'. Well organized tour, from start to finish: the ferry ride, instructions on the way to the first point in the tour. A word of caution: when they say it is a steep walk, THEY MEAN IT! It's still walkable, but being out of shape I needed to stop and catch my breath a time or two. There are four steep slopes, but the walk got easier after the first two. Very educational and eye-opening how the inmates lived back then and probably not much different than today.

This is a strong consideration and almost a must-do if you are visiting San Francisco. I have done this many times and regretfully give them 1 star because they showed no flexibility or willingness to help with an incorrect online order.

When do they plan to modernize and update this tour? They charge so much and provide so little. Old style audio tours with terrible script and no live guides to make it interesting or fun. Crowds on the boat and island are mainly folks from Europe and they are herded around like cattle. They charge so much for this tour I wonder where they divert the money as it certainly isnt used to make this a 21st century tourist event.

Dear David, We regret to inform you that your recent review pertains to the wrong business. The company you mentioned, cityexperiences.com, is the sole provider licensed by the NPS to offer Alcatraz tickets and ferry rides. We, on the other hand, operate as a small family business specializing solely in private tours. You can find details on our website, alcatraztoursf.com. It's important to note that we are not authorized to sell Alcatraz tickets, nor do we provide them. We kindly request that you remove your review and post it on the appropriate business page. Your cooperation in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your understanding. Kind regards, Victor

A unique experience but there's cooler things to do in San Francisco, especially if your time is limited. I did this tour once as a kid but I had completely forgotten what it was like so I decided to do it again. I definitely remember it being cooler as a kid. But then again, I guess that's a lot of things. Overall it's a very educational experience and if you're into history you're gonna love it, but if you only have a day or two to see San Fran, China Town is definitely cooler than prison.

Sometimes playing tourist in your home city is fun. My friend was in town and wanted to go to Alcatraz. We did the night tour because it was close to Halloween. The night tour added an extra layer of spooky. The infirmary was particularly creepy at night. The audio tour was as good as I remember maybe even better now that I'm a bit older and can appreciate a good interpretive program. I also used to be a Park Ranger and had to design tour programs for historic sites like Alcatraz. The audio tour is well done. They do a good job at creating an immersive experience. There's also an exhibit near where you return your head set about the modern prison system. This was also really well done. The exhibit explores the connection between slavery, race and incarceration in the US. Definitely worth checking out and a great place to wait for your friends who may have gotten lost during the audio tour ;) Alcatraz seems to get better every time I visit. Maybe I'll be back sooner than 10 years this time.

!!!MUST GO IF VISITING SAN FRAN!!! I REALLY enjoyed Alcatraz. The staff were super helpful and nice to guide us through the jail. They were really organized and guided people to the boat with no trouble. I really enjoyed seeing the old cell rooms where you can see prisoners items to keep them busy. I suggest going into every cell you can go in because there are little signs telling about prison life and what they did to keep busy. If you can go check out the garden. Note: the garden is only open till 3pm. The only thing to be aware of is there's A LOT of seagulls and birds swarming around. So if your scared just keep watch and don't look down because there are A LOT!!! There's also a huge family of flies on the boat on the window in the back of the boat that will land on you if you sit next to them. Overall loved the experience and would definitely come back to try the night tours and basement tour (which you have to pay extra and book out easily).

I usually do not write reviews but this incident has compelled me to let all the readers know that absolutely do not take this tour! The staff at this place is racist and liars. When I was told to step out of the line because did not have my complete party, I stepped away but they asked me to completely walk out of the premises which I abided by and started walking towards the main gates and heard the operator tell other people "OMG" in a very derogatory tone. I let it go and walked away. When we had our full party we came back to the line and we were told you'll will take the next tour. Which we were ok with too. Another lady just comes to us and asks we used the F word towards the door attendant to which we were surprised and walked her through the entire situation world by word. She then accuses us that May be she said "OMG" because you used the F word. We explained to her that we have a toddler with us and we don't use the F word in front of him and we requested her to stop repeating it as well as our son was listening to the conversation. To that she said oh please I have Indian friends too and they use the cuss words all the time. Which was just unacceptable because she profiled the entire Indian community and made a rude assumption about our nationality or origin. She then said we will have to offer you a refund and deny entry into the cruise because of your behavior. Again what behavior? Her staff was blatantly lying, she just passed racist comments and we were denied entry? At this point we did not even want to go for the cruise anymore so we decided to take the refund and leave. She processed the refund and it was incomplete. She gave us approximately $30 less than the price we paid. When I asked her about it she just got up from the seat and said go take it up with the 3rd party you booked through. Visiting as a family with my 22months old son , all of us excited to see Alcatraz after 5 years in San Francisco and our day was ruined because of 2 liars and racist individuals.

Hello Arwa Yes, you are correct. Alcatraz Cruises is the only licensed company that takes customers to Alcatraz ( https://www.cityexperiences.com/san-francisco/city-cruises/alcatraz/). On the other hand, we do not operate any ferries, and we don't even offer tickets to Alcatraz. Our focus is solely on providing private tours. If you visit our website alcatraztoursf.com, you'll see that the name "Alcatraz Tours" may have caused some confusion, but it's not us you need to review. Please direct your review to cityexperiences.com. I hope this clarifies things. Kind regards, Nick

Amazing experience!! We did the behind the scenes! Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and took us behind the scenes exclusively which made the experience a special one. Audio portion was pretty cool. Just being there in person was unreal knowing the history behind this notorious prison that made history will forever be a memorable experience we will never forget. Visiting Alcatraz is a unique experience for any traveler. When visiting, it’s important to note that ferry rides and tours are often sold out weeks in advance, so it’s best to plan ahead.

Additionally, visitors should bring layers of clothing and wear comfortable shoes , as the weather in San Francisco can change quickly, and the island is quite hilly.

Wearing sunscreen is also advisable , as the island has limited shade.

Finally, photography is allowed, but it’s prohibited to touch or climb over any of the artifacts.

Secrets of Alcatraz: 5 Facts About the Notorious Prison You Probably Didn't Know

alcatraz visit tour

By Elizabeth Stamp

alcatraz island

Before it became among the world’s most infamous prisons, Alcatraz Island was just that, an island. But since the time the federal penitentiary opened in 1934, the location quickly turned into one of the world’s most infamous prisons. As a result, Alcatraz has long been a source of fascination for the public. The former federal penitentiary is set on a rocky 22-acre island located a mile and a half off the coast of San Francisco and once housed some of America’s highest-profile prisoners, including Al Capone, James “Whitey” Bulger, George “Machine Gun Kelly” Barnes, and Robert Stroud, the Birdman of Alcatraz.

The island was originally named Isla de los Alcatraces, or Isle of the Pelicans, by Spanish explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala, who sailed through the bay in 1775. Before bank robbers and gangsters occupied the cells, the island was a military prison and armory. Thanks to the Gold Rush, San Francisco became an important port in the mid-19th century. In 1850, an executive order by President Millard Fillmore reserved the island for public use, and the US Army built a fortress to form, along with Fort Point and Lime Point, a “triangle of defense” for San Francisco Bay. The fort included 111 cannons, a wharf, a guard house, and a three-story citadel among its structures and defensive measures. The first lighthouse on the West Coast was also built on the island in 1854. According to the National Park Service , Alcatraz was used as an armory to protect weapons from being used by Confederate sympathizers, and the crew of a Confederate privateer and local citizens accused of treason were imprisoned on the island during the war. Today, Alcatraz is a popular tourist destination operated by the National Park Service and is home to gardens and hosts exhibitions by artists such as Ai Weiwei , but its penal history remains central to its legacy. While most people know of the Rock, there’s far more to the island than you’ll see on a tour or in the movies. Read on to learn the secrets of this infamous landmark.

Ground-penetrating radar found historic fortifications on the island

Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz had been used to house prisoners since 1859, and by 1900, the prison population had grown to 441. In 1907, the Army redesignated Alcatraz as “Pacific Branch, US Military Prison, Alcatraz Island.” When the island’s purpose became carceral rather than defensive, the citadel was torn down, and a new cell house was built over the basement and moat. In 2019, archaeologist Timothy de Smet and other researchers from New York’s Binghamton University used a number of techniques like terrestrial laser scans, ground-penetrating radar data, and georectifications to uncover the remains of the citadel, including vaulted tunnels and bombproof traverse.

It had incredibly strict rules but decent food

Alcatraz island

The Army left Alcatraz in the 1930s, and the complex was transferred to the Bureau of Prisons, which used it to house incarcerated individuals deemed difficult, violent, or escape risks by other penitentiaries. According to the Bureau of Prisons, Alcatraz could accommodate 336 inmates, but the average population was 260–275. Inmates were not allowed to have newspapers or radios, and they didn’t receive original letters, but instead were given copies retyped by staff to prevent secret messages.

alcatraz island

In her book Alcatraz Prison in American History, Marilyn Tower Oliver writes, “To keep escape attempts at a minimum, Alcatraz had a rule of silence. Prisoners were not to speak to one another in the cell block or dining hall.” One bright spot were the meals, which weren’t gourmet, but could have been worse. “Alcatraz ‘cuisine’ was considered the best in the federal prison system,” Jolene Babyak writes in Breaking the Rock: The Great Escape from Alcatraz. Inmates were served dishes such as grilled sausages, Swiss steak, spare ribs, and stuffed peppers.

There were 14 known escape attempts

Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz’s isolated setting made it nearly impossible to escape, though there were certainly attempts. During the 29 years it was a federal prison, Alcatraz had 14 known escape attempts by 36 men, two of whom tried to escape twice.

alcatraz island

Twenty-three men were caught, six were shot and killed, and two drowned. Five men’s fates are unknown, and they are listed as “missing and presumed drowned,” allowing the prison to boast that no one ever officially succeeded in escaping.

There were children on Alcatraz Island

Also inhabiting the island were the men who worked at the prison—and their families. “Surprisingly, about 60 families and ten or so bachelors had always resided on the Rock,” Babyak wrote in her book, Eyewitness on Alcatraz: True Stories of Families who Lived on the Rock. Babyak’s father served as superintendent of industries and later associate warden, and her family lived on Alcatraz for three years during her childhood. Most children would cross the bay daily to attend school in San Francisco. “At the top of our neighborhood was a maximum security penitentiary,” Babyak wrote. “Yet I saw prisoners only from a distance and paid little attention to them. Our parents frequently said they felt safer living on Alcatraz than in San Francisco.”

It closed following several high-profile escape attempts, but that’s not why it shut down

In June of 1962, Frank Morris, John Anglin, and his brother, Clarence Anglin, escaped from Alcatraz, leaving dummy heads in their beds. They were never found, and the escape placed scrutiny on the penitentiary. However, the decision to close Alcatraz the following year was financial according to the Bureau of Prisons. The island required $3–5 million dollars in repairs to stay open and the operating costs were three times as much as other federal prisons due to its remote location and the need to transport everything (including fresh water) by boat.

Indigenous activists occupied the island for 19 months

Alcatraz island

Alcatraz closed as a prison in 1963, and on March 9, 1964, five Sicangu Lakota occupied the island for four hours, declaring it indigenous land per the 1868 Fort Laramie Treaty. On November 20, 1969, a group of 78 Native American activists lead by Richard Oakes, calling themselves Indians of All Tribes, landed on Alcatraz and would occupy it for 19 months, claiming the land and planning to develop a Center for Native American Studies, a museum, a training school, as well as ecology and spiritual centers. The occupation ended on June 10, 1971 and brought attention to the fight for Native rights.

🚀 Historical Insights : Alcatraz Island, nestled in San Francisco Bay, holds a storied past as a former federal prison, famously known as "The Rock." Housing notorious criminals like Al Capone and "Machine Gun" Kelly, it served as the Pacific Coast's first lighthouse before becoming a maximum-security facility from 1934 to 1963. Beyond its prison legacy, Alcatraz played roles as a Civil War fortress and a hub for Native American activism in the 1960s. Today, it stands as a premier tourist destination, inviting exploration of its historic prison cells, rich past, and breathtaking views of the San Francisco skyline.

🎬✨Alcatraz has featured in notable films, such as "Escape from Alcatraz" starring Clint Eastwood, depicting the infamous 1962 escape, and the thriller "The Rock" with Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage showcasing its dramatic landscape in a fictional action plot.

Useful Travel Tips, Recommendations, and Information

Why Stay in Fisherman’s Wharf? Fisherman’s Wharf offers a family-focused experience away from the hustle of San Francisco's downtown. In the heart of San Francisco, Fisherman’s Wharf stands out as a well-known hub with ocean-front seafood restaurants, fun attractions, intriguing museums, and hidden gems waiting to be discovered. The area boasts a variety of attractions, such as the Musée Mécanique with its antique arcade games, Madame Tussauds, and the virtual escape-room experience, Alcatraz: The Breakout Escape Room.

Explore the Maritime National Historical Park, USS Pampanito Museum and Memorial, SS Jeremiah O'Brien, Museum of 3D Illusions, Magowan's Infinite Mirror Maze, Aquarium of the Bay, Sea Lion Viewing Area at Pier 39, Hyde St. Pier Historic Ships, and Ghirardelli Square—home to a Chocolate factory and diverse stores.
