Top Sights & Attractions for Cruises Leaving from New Jersey

Statue of liberty.

Many of the best photographs, postcards, and video footage of the Statue of Liberty were taken from the incomparable vantage point of Cape Liberty. A gift from France to the United States as a gesture of friendship and amicable relations, the Statue of Liberty was unveiled in October 1886. For American citizens, immigrants, and visitors alike, the raised torch of the Statue of Liberty towering 305 feet above the New York Harbor now symbolizes freedom and goodwill to all who arrive on American shores. Immigrants making the long, treacherous voyage across the ocean to the U.S. were greeted by Lady Liberty welcoming them to their new home.

Downtown Manhattan

If you can, take a few extra days before or after your cruise from NJ to spend time in nearby New York City. Manhattan, the heart of NYC, is home to some of the most famous sights and attractions in the world. Spend a night on Broadway and watch your favorite musical. Stroll under the neon lights of Times Square among thousands of New Yorkers and tourists alike. Read a book in the green grass of Central Park and stand under the Empire State Building to understand its unparalleled vastness. Visit the myriad of museums, restaurants, libraries, famous movie filming sites, and architectural wonders in this amazing city.

Home of Alexander Hamilton

On a cruise from NJ, don’t miss a visit to the home of Alexander Hamilton in Manhattan, The Grange at 141st Street. Born in 1755 on the Caribbean island of Nevis, Hamilton came to New York at the age of 18, became a hero of the Revolutionary War, and went on to become a congressman, a prominent lawyer, and the first Secretary of the Treasury.

Learn More About Cape Liberty Shore Excursions

Where can i eat near the cape liberty cruise port.

Although there are no restaurants near the port, the nearby city of Newark has every restaurant and type of food imaginable. Additionally, there is a food truck with coffee, bagels, and other delicious bites outside the entrance of the cruise terminal, which is convenient for those departing on cruises from New Jersey.

What’s the culture & history of the Cape Liberty cruise port?

Conveniently located in Lower New York Harbor, the Cape Liberty Cruise Port was originally created by private developers in 1930 who intended it for industrial use. However, the ideal location and sheer size of the port made it an ideal candidate for use by the U.S. Navy in WWII. The peninsula upon which the port sits off the eastern end of Bayonne Bay is man-made. In 2003, the BLRA and Royal Caribbean International announced their agreement to turn the 430-acre port into a cruise terminal, and in 2013 Royal Caribbean International built a brand new, sleek, and innovative cruise terminal featuring LED lighting and modern design.

Where can I go shopping near the port?

Since the cruise port sits on a peninsula off the mainland, there are no shopping options in proximity to the port, besides a kiosk with basic essentials in the cruise terminal. About a 20-minute drive from the port, guests can find TJ Maxx and Walmart for last-minute cruise essentials.

How can I get around New Jersey?

While public transportation is available to bring you to a drop-off point outside the Cape Liberty cruise terminal, Port Authority prohibits any guests to arrive at the port in any transportation other than a motor vehicle. Pedestrians are also prohibited from entering the restricted port area, so walking from the bus drop-off station is not an option. Therefore, you’re required to acquire a taxi or other car service for the remainder of the way to the terminal (about a $10 taxi fare). Taxis, Uber/Lyft drivers, and private car services all have access to the restricted areas of the port as well.

What are the local currency and tipping customs?

The official currency in Cape Liberty is the US dollar (USD). Major credit cards are widely used and accepted, and ATMs are readily available throughout the city and port. Most prices displayed on merchandise and food do not yet include gratuities or taxes. Tipping is not mandatory but is generally considered to be proper and appropriate etiquette for services rendered.

Everything to Know About Cape Liberty Cruise Port (Bayonne, NJ)

Guest Post

Taking a cruise out of Cape Liberty?  Here is everything you need to know before you leave the house and enjoy the start of your vacation from this cruise port in the Garden State.

The Cape Liberty Cruise Port in Bayonne, New Jersey offers convenient cruise access to anyone from the New Jersey or New York areas. In fact, many passengers will opt for this port instead of NYC’s port , as it’s much easier to get to and not as busy.

Before your trip to the Caribbean or Bermuda, it’s important to know everything about your chosen departure port. Therefore, we’ve compiled all the information you should know to help make your trip planning process smoother.

History of Cape Liberty

Cape Liberty used to be the home of a Naval Supply Depot, commissioned in 1942, and was a major repair yard for wartime vessels, Essex class aircraft carriers, and Iowa class battle ships.

Over the next fifty years or so, Bayonne not only supported Navy supply operations and the training of Navy supply offers, but it became a base of support for all military personnel stationed overseas. During this time it was called the Military Ocean Terminal – Bayonne (MOTBY).

By the late 90s, MOTBY was no longer needed for military support and marked for closure, eliminating thousands of civilian jobs. In 2002 it was renamed The Peninsula, and the following year the Bayonne Local Redevelopment Authority (established in 1998) made an agreement with Royal Caribbean International to turn it into a cruise port, which they eventually christened as Cape Liberty Cruise Port.

Construction began in January 2004 and was completed a month and a half later. Royal Caribbean’s vessel, the Voyager of the Seas, made its maiden voyage from Cape Liberty on May 14, 2004.

Since then the terminal has been continually expanded and built upon to accommodate all Royal Caribbean’s vessels , as well as two of Celebrity Cruise’s ships.

Information About the Cape Liberty Cruise Port

In its first year alone, Cape Liberty saw well over 200,000 passengers safely through its gates. In 2016 they hit a record high of 509,306 passengers. As the port continues to grow, they plan on seeing that number rise even higher in the years to come.

A few good things to consider when visiting Bayonne for your cruise:

  • Bayonne’s sole purpose is the home of the Cape Liberty Cruise Port and does not offer much tourism opportunities.
  • To satisfy your inner tourist, Hoboken, NJ and Manhattan aren’t that far from Cape Liberty. You can easily take a cab (or drive, if you have your own car) and tour the cities nearby.
  • The terminal is in a remote location, so walking anywhere to or from the terminal is not an option. The only facilities you’ll find at the port are free Wi-Fi and restrooms.

Cruise Lines That Use Cape Liberty

Cape Liberty Cruise Port provides year-round cruising via Royal Caribbean International (the cruise company that built the port and first sailed out of it) and Celebrity Cruises. If you haven’t yet selected your cruise, now is the time to learn a little bit about the cruises that sail out of Cape Liberty.

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd : Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas and Adventure of the Seas both ship out of Cape Liberty. Cruises on either vessel are sure to offer you and your group tons of fun while sailing the ocean. You can take your choice of cruises to the Bahamas and Caribbean islands, or tour Canada and New England shores.

While on board you can experience sky diving simulators, water slides, bumper cars, fine dining, and more.

Celebrity Cruise Lines : Celebrity Summit by Celebrity Cruises picks you up at Cape Liberty Cruise Port and takes you on whatever Caribbean excursion you want. If the Caribbean islands is not your thing, they also have cruises that take you to Bermuda. Enjoy tropical beaches and islands no matter where you decide to go.

And on board, you can enjoy the best ballet selections, luxury accommodations, gambling, and the finest in culinary experiences.

The Cape Liberty Cruise Port Terminal is located at 4 Port Terminal Blvd, Bayonne, NJ 07002, right off Route 440 South. At the intersection (traffic light) you’ll turn left at Port Terminal Blvd.

Here you will see the entrance to the Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor which is also known as the “Military Ocean Terminal Bayonne”.

Keep going straight till you reach the guard gate, then follow the signs for the cruise terminal.

If you plan to use a navigation app or GPS device, input the above address to find your way to the terminal. You can also find detailed directions at CruiseLiberty.com or RoyalCaribbean.com .

Tips for Luggage and Passenger Drop-off

The lounge opens for pre-boarding procedures at 10:30am, but only ticketed passengers will be allowed in the terminal building. Be sure to arrive at the time you are given on your sailing documents. Be there at least 90 minutes before departure time, or you may be denied access to your ship.

To make the check-in process smoother, you will need to complete your online pre-registration at least five days before cruise day.

Any self-carry luggage must be no bigger than 23” x 16”. Anything larger must be checked in through the porter delivery service.

Zones 1-5 are located directly in front of the terminal and are specifically for dropping off luggage or passengers. This makes it easy if you have a lot of passengers travelling with you: just drop them off, go park your car, and then take the shuttle back to the terminal.

Port of Cape Liberty Parking

Getting to the Cape Liberty Cruise Port is the easy part. The hard part is then finding a place to park that won’t kill your travel budget.

The Port does offer parking for cruise passengers, but that is going to run you about $25 per day, which can get expensive if your cruise is for a week or more. If you have an oversized vehicle, such as a camper or RV, the price per day is $50 or more.

The benefit of parking at the port is that they don’t require you to make a reservation to get a spot.  Also the parking lot is adjacent to the port so it’s much more convenient and will save time.

At the Cape Liberty cruise port parking area major credit cards are accepted and parking availability is guaranteed.

If you want something cheaper, there are other parking options in the New York and New Jersey area that you can consider.

Newark International is the closest airport to Cape Liberty and is only 6 miles away.  JFK airport is 32 miles away and LaGuardia Airport is 35 miles from the port.

Taxi : Taxis are readily available at any of the 3 airports closest to the cruise port.  The prices below can fluctuate and only reflect the cost at the time of the writing of this article.

Bus: Take the 119 bus to Bayonne from the Port Authority Bus Terminal , located at 150 Greenwich Street in New York. For more information give them a call at 212-564-8484.

Shuttle: If you’re not traveling alone and have a group of 5 or more people with you, you might want to look into getting an independent shuttle or private car service. They will usually cost a lot less per person than a cab, train, or buss will. They’ll also be able to assist you with all your luggage, and they’ll take you directly to and from the cruise terminal.

Here are some of the shuttle or car services available. All these companies are authorized by the Port Authority of NY and NJ:

Hy’s Limousine : Hy’s Limo offers the best in private luxury transportation in and around New York and New Jersey. Their fleet of cars include Executive Sedans, Stretch Limos, SUVs, and so much more. To get a quote simply visit their website or call them at 1-800-255-LIMO (5466).

AirtportShuttles.com : Book your choice of car or shuttle (provided from various local companies) through AirportShuttles.com. Depending on when you’re traveling, you can get a sedan for as little as $69 one way for up to 3 passengers (including luggage).

Uber or Lyft: Honestly, if you’re only traveling with two or three other folks, booking a ride with Uber or Lyft is not only going to be super easy, but might be cheaper for you, depending on where you’re coming from.

If you’re coming from New York, it’s important to note that both Uber and Lyft charge extra for crossing between two states ($20 for Uber and $15 for Lyft).

For example, if you’re coming from Newark, which is in NJ, the most you might pay for an Uber is $28 ($26 for Lyft), while coming from anywhere in New York is going to run you anywhere between $70 and $200 (depending on the type of service you select and where in NY you’re coming from).

The nice thing about using Uber or Lyft is you don’t need to call or carry around cash. Everything is done through the prospective app, even paying your driver.

Getting to the Cape Liberty Cruise Port Without a Car (Port Transportation)

Flying into New York for your cruise? Or maybe you simply don’t want to deal with the headache and expense of dealing with parking your car. No matter the reason, if you’re needing transportation from area airports or hotels to Cape Liberty, then we have you covered.

port liberty cruise lines

The good news is that in a city with a mature transportation network like New York, you have a number of options in getting to the port. And if you’re overwhelmed with trying to get around the city, don’t worry, we have you covered with exactly how to get from the city to Cape Liberty.

As for convenience, it’s hard to beat transportation network companies like Uber and Lyft. By downloading the app, you can call a car on demand, anywhere in the New York/New Jersey area.

Rates for Uber/Lyft are roughly in line with their taxi counterparts, but it does depend on where you are coming from and where you are going.

For example, if you are flying (or staying) in New York and sailing from Cape Liberty, then you’ll be charged extra for your car going from New York to New Jersey or vice versa. Uber and Lyft charge $20 extra for going between the two states . Certain bridges and tunnels can also add to the cost.

Because of these extra charges, if you are headed to Cape Liberty (in New Jersey) from anywhere in New York, the cost of the trip is considerably higher.

If you can, it’s a good idea to take public transportation (see the Public Transportation section below) to get from New York over to New Jersey. Then, you can take an Uber/Lyft for about $20 the rest of the way to the cruise port. This can save you a fortune.

Below, we’ve listed their estimated prices from the areas around town to the Cape Liberty Cruise Port.

Keep in mind that these prices are per car, not per person.

If you are considering using a rideshare service, be sure to read more details about them here .

When you think of New York, one of the most iconic images is of a person waiting on the side of a busy street hailing a yellow taxi. With thousands of taxis in the city, they are a popular (and highly visible) way to get around.

If you are coming from the Newark airport to Cape Liberty, then picking up a cab at the airport is easy as you’ll head to the taxi station where you can hop in. If you are staying in New York, it can be a little more challenging.

New York taxis can decide whether or not to offer a ride to New Jersey. You will negotiate the flat fee before you get in the car.

You can see the estimated taxi fare from popular areas to Cape Liberty in the chart above. If you are interested in seeing the estimated fare from your specific location, visit this helpful page to calculate a fare .

Cruise Line Shuttles

One option is to book a transfer via your cruise line. Since the lines have many cruisers that fly into town to sail out of a port, they offer transportation services between the airport and cruise port.

However, we generally recommend other methods of getting to the port.

The issue is that transfers tend to be expensive, and don’t run on your schedule. For example, you can expect a transfer for one person from Newark to Cape Liberty run about $30 per person (one way) based on historic prices. That’s roughly the cost of an Uber or taxi, which can seat multiple people for the same amount.

As well, there are multiple major airports in the area, and they may not all be serviced by a cruise line transfer. According to the representative we talked to, there was no service between New York’s JFK or LaGuardia airports and Cape Liberty (although that could change).

Cruise transfers are also limited in that they operate only on the day of sailing and only go between the airport and cruise port. So if you come in a day or two early to visit New York or are staying at a hotel in the area, then the cruise line transfer isn’t a viable option.

If you are still interested in a transfer, contact your cruise line directly to learn more.

Independent Shuttles/Car Services

If you are traveling with a larger group to Cape Liberty, then your best bet is likely to look for an independent shuttle or private car service. These providers can offer private service to the port, usually for less per person than a taxi or other service, assuming you have seven or more passengers.

To be frank, the number of shuttles and car services in the New York area is extremely high. That means we can’t list them all here. Instead, we’ve rounded up a sample list of area companies to give you a good start to go from.

The prices quoted by these companies can vary widely depending on what sort of service you need and exactly where you are coming from. However, as a general rule expect it to be a better value the larger a group you need to transport. Be sure to shop around before selecting a service as it can save you considerable money.

One other thing to keep in mind is that the prices you are quoted won’t include gratuity, which can add on another 15-20% to your fare.

Public Transportation

Bayonne, New Jersey and the Cape Liberty port are served by Hudson-Bergen Light Rail . Specifically, the North Jersey Coast Line takes you from the Hoboken Terminal all the way to Cape Liberty.

If you are coming from Manhattan, you’ll need to take the PATH rail to the Hoboken Terminal. Then, you’ll transfer to light rail, which will drop you at the 34th Street Light Rail Station near the port. From there, you will need to call a taxi or Uber to take you the couple of miles down the port to the cruise terminal.

You can also simply take the PATH train from Manhattan and get off at the first station in New Jersey (Hoboken, Newport or Exchange Place, depending on which train you take) and then take an Uber/Lyft the rest of the way to the cruise port. This saves you the surcharge of using Uber/Lyft or a taxi to go from New York to New Jersey.

Expect the public transit trip to cost about $5.

Honestly, given the transfers and the fact that the closest rail station to the port is still about two miles away from the ship, we think many people would just be better offer with a taxi or Uber/Lyft.

Bottom line: If you are in New Jersey, then Uber/Lyft will likely be your easiest and cheapest way to get to the port. If coming from New York State, then we’d suggest taking public transit (PATH) over to New Jersey, and then an Uber/Lyft the rest of the way to the port to save money.

The port itself is easy. Professional porters. Breezy check in and embarkation. RC staff helpful and friendly Parking was a PIA! Sold out cruise. Garage was reserved for handicapped only. An insanely long line to park in an open lot among old shipping buildings with minimal security. Forced in the overflow lot no cameras and a 4 ft fence in the last row. Our car and the line of cars next to us were broken into. $150 for five days. No other choice once you’re in the line to park. I guess could’ve found a hotel to park at.

Non parking lot available, EWR parking lot is cheaper but you will pay $40 in Uber one way. Its pain take cruise from Cape Liberty. Thanks America.

Why do you assume everyone is traveling from N.Y.? We’re looking for transportation from PA.

Carnival Liberty Itineraries

Carnival liberty review, review of carnival liberty.

The 2005-built Carnival Liberty cruise ship is the 4th of all 5 Conquest-class vessels - with sisterships Conquest , Freedom , Glory , Valor . This series preceded the new Dream-class trio of newbuilds. In 2011, Liberty became the first CCL liner overhauled as part of the USD 0,5 billion "Fun Ship 2.0" drydock refurbishment project - a multi-year program centered on adding "signature" dining and entertainment venues to all older vessels in the fleet.

The vessel (IMO number 9278181) is currently Panama- flagged (MMSI 371083000) and registered in Colon .

History - construction and ownership

Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL) is a US shipping company, trademarked brand and subsidiary of Carnival Corporation (shipowner). CCL was founded in 1972 as an independent company by Ted Arison (1924-1999, co-founder of NCL Norwegian ).

CCL has the Corporation's largest fleet as number of vessels and GT-tonnage (ship sizes/volumes and passenger capacities). In 2023, CCL had ~9% (by revenue) and ~19% (passengers) share of the cruise industry's worldwide market. In 2024, the parent company (Carnival Corporation) had ~51% stake in the US$64+ billion industry.

Carnival Liberty cruise ship

The 3000-passenger ship Carnival Liberty and the sisterships are larger versions of earlier Destiny-class CCL liners, as well as more feature-filled. More space reveals into additional decks, more bars and lounges, an upscale steakhouse, and well-proportioned public areas.

Decks and Cabins

Carnival Liberty staterooms (1489 total, in 27 grades) include 54 Suites, 521 Balcony, 330 Oceanview and 566 Inside cabins, including 29 wheelchair-accessible (in all cabin categories). The ship has no "family cabins" but instead offers connecting rooms in various categories. Most cabins are sized 170-185 ft2 (16-17 m2). Cabin balconies are sized 35-75 ft2 (3-7 m2). The ship has 3 types of suites - Captain's, Grand, Ocean. The largest are Captain's Suites (500 ft2 / 46 m2 plus 150 ft2 / 14 m2 terrace).

The boat has 13 passenger decks , of which 8 are with cabins. Over 50% of all staterooms are outside, 60% of those are with balconies.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

On Carnival Liberty, the two main dining rooms offer traditional dinner with set times and tablemates or flexible dining, via "Your Choice Dining" Carnival program. Silver Olympian Restaurant is nicer of the duo. It is located aft and framed by 3 walls of windows. Golden Olympian is positioned in a central spot, but both offer the same menu. At dinner, vegetarian and low-carb fare is served, as well as Spa Carnival choices. Cuisine often exceeds expectations, especially at Harry's Supper Club and the complimentary Guy's Burger Joint, not to mention the fish-and-chips bar, sushi station and also the dining room, where all waiters sing and dance. The casual two-level Emile's buffet offers a number of food stations with a variety of choices, including a salad bar, deli, dessert station, daily regional cuisines. The 24-hour room service provides a limited selection of items.

Follows the complete list of Carnival Liberty restaurants and food bars.

  • Golden Olympian Restaurant (744-seat forward Dining Room, with two fixed dinner seatings or Your-Time Dining; offers Seuss At Sea-themed breakfasts for $5)
  • Silver Olympian Restaurant (1122-seat aft Dining Room, with two fixed dinner seatings and open seating breakfast and lunch)
  • Bluelguana Cantina (complimentary Mexican fast food bar; offers burritos, tacos)
  • Guy's Burger Joint (complimentary fast food bar by Guy Fieri)
  • Emile’s Lido Buffet Restaurant (1396-seat, self-service buffet restaurant with various food stations; operates as a bistro in the evenings)
  • Herry’s Steakhouse (108-seat specialty restaurant for steaks and seafood; with dance floor and live music)
  • Origami Sushi (complimentary)
  • Sushi at Sea (Lido Bar) mini version of Bonsai Sushi, offers a la carte priced menu with rolls, sushi, sashimi, prices vary between USD 1,50-7,50.

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

Amongst Liberty's plethora of new offers, cruisers can find a candy shop, four signature bars and comedians approved by George Lopez. Like her Conquest-class sisters, Liberty also boasts a 3-deck theater and a series of stores. The hard-to-please teen set gets their own disco, positioned along the promenade with the rest of the "adult" fare. Carnival Liberty offers the typical Carnival experience blended with a handful of twists. The "old faithful" are also there: personal service and diverse evening entertainment ranging from Vegas floor show to jazz to the "piano man". There is also an EA Sports Bar onboard. With its video games, flat-screen TVs and beer it has to be the best man's cave at sea.

Follows the complete list of Carnival Liberty lounges, clubs and other entertainment venues for kids, teens, and adults.

Carnival Liberty Wiki

Fun Ship 2.0 upgrade  was done in 2016. The vessel was christened by Mira Katherine Sorvino (1967-born US actress). After drydock refurbishment in 2011, Liberty became the first Carnival liner with "Fun Ship 2.0" upgrade. It is also the first Fun Ship with "Seaside Theater" - CCL's huge outdoor LED screen for movies (12x22 ft, or 3,7x6,7 m) on Lido Deck.

Carnival Liberty cruise ship

Liberty is of Carnival's Conquest-class liners ( Fincantieri Monfalcone -built), with sisterships Conquest ,  Freedom ,  Glory ,  Valor . In April 2017, Carnival Cruise Line announced the names of a cruise booking record-breaking couple from Florida - Bernard and Janice Caffary. The retired couple had booked its 200th Carnival cruise on Carnival Liberty leaving out of Port Canaveral . This record was achieved in 15 years (first booking in 2002), meaning they averaged over 13 Carnival cruises a year and spending 878 days at sea with the company - the equivalent of nearly 2 1/2 years. The company honored the couple with welcoming signage throughout the Port Canaveral cruise terminal. They also were guests of honor during special onboard VIP celebrations. In 2017, the couple already had 30 more Carnival cruises booked.

Drydock 2016 was in the period December 1-16.

In 2021 (October) Carnival Liberty was drydocked at Navantia Shipyard ( Cadiz Spain ), mainly for general maintenance (technical and routine) works and also repainting (received CCL's new livery).

The Top Alaska Cruise Lines

Royal Caribbean's Radiance of the Seas in Alaska.

A cruise vacation to Alaska is a profound adventure. The spectacular natural beauty, rugged wilderness, massive glaciers and endless opportunities for wildlife viewing make a trip to the 49th state a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many travelers. As an added bonus, cruise ships can reach remote parts of the state, including Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve: one of the most significant (and picturesque) marine and wildlife sanctuaries in the world.

With the ever-growing popularity of the destination and an extended cruising season (some lines now travel to Alaska between April and October), more ships are heading north to the shores of The Great Land. With these expanded itineraries, there's more than ever to think about when booking your Alaska cruise.

To assist in your decision-making process, U.S. News listed the top cruise lines to consider across five categories, including the best options for families , luxury-seekers and adventurers. U.S. News consulted data provided by Cruiseline.com and the results of our 2024 Best Cruise Lines rankings to help develop this list of the top cruise lines sailing to Alaska.

Best Overall: Holland America Line and Princess Cruises

Holland america line.

Holland America Line's Westerdam in Glacier Bay, Alaska.

Alaska cruise ships: Eurodam , Koningsdam , Nieuw Amsterdam , Noordam , Westerdam , Zaandam Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Anchorage , Fairbanks and Whittier, Alaska; Seattle; Vancouver, British Columbia Starting from: $379 per person for seven-night Alaska Inside Passage cruise on May 1, 2024, or Sept. 22, 2024. Round-trip from Vancouver.

Holland America Line has been cruising Alaska's pristine glacial waters for more than 75 years – longer than any other cruise line. On top of that, the line features more voyages to Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve than its competitors. Seven-night round-trip sailings depart from either Seattle or Vancouver, while cruisetours – Holland America Line 's sea- and land-based packages – leave from several cities and extend each trip to nine to 18 days.

If this will be your first visit to Alaska, consider booking the comprehensive 14-day Yukon + Denali cruisetour. This Alaska adventure includes a voyage aboard Koningsdam, plus a three-night stay at Holland America's exclusive lodge in Denali National Park, where you'll have the opportunity to see Alaska's big five: moose, caribou, grizzly bears, Dall sheep and wolves – and book bucket list activities like flightseeing over Denali. If it's a picture-perfect day, your pilot might even be able to land on the tallest mountain in North America, also known as "The Great One." Other excursions include meeting dog mushers from the Iditarod, landing on the Yanert Glacier, heli-hiking or embarking on a covered wagon adventure on the Alaska tundra. The Yukon Territory portion of this trip is exclusive to Holland America; while there, visit the mining town of Dawson City and learn about Northern Canada's Klondike Gold Rush of August 1896.

Another highlight of sailing Alaska with Holland America is the Alaska Up Close program, which immerses guests in an array of expert-led lectures and excursions on board and shore. When it comes to dining , Holland America is the only cruise line to achieve the Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) certification, which means cruisers will enjoy certified sustainable wild Alaska seafood on board (think: Alaskan king crab legs and fresh salmon). You may also have access to culinary excursions in partnership with Food & Wine magazine, as well as special offerings like Alaska salmon bakes.

Cruisers should also consider one of the Holland America's new itineraries for 2024: the 28-night Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice voyage aboard Westerdam, round-trip from Seattle. This sailing, which departs on June 9, 2024, features highlights like crossing the Arctic Circle; celebrating the summer solstice in Nome, Alaska; and watching Kodiak bears – the largest bears in the world – on Kodiak Island.

Insider tip: Sample Holland America Line's famous Dutch pea soup while glacier viewing on the outside decks. The crew passes around mugs of the warm soup in this Holland America tradition that gives a nod to the line's heritage – and keeps guests warm on chilly summer days in Alaska.

Princess Cruises

Alaska cruise ships: Grand Princess , Sapphire Princess , Royal Princess , Ruby Princess , Majestic Princess , Discovery Princess , Crown Princess Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Seattle; Anchorage, Alaska; Vancouver, British Columbia; San Francisco ; Fairbanks, Alaska Starting from: $398 per person for seven-night cruise from Anchorage (Whittier, Alaska) to Vancouver on May 18, 2024

Princess Cruises has a long history in Alaska, boasting more than 50 years of sailing to the Great Land. Cruise itineraries last between seven and 14 nights, and many visit the Inside Passage. Princess Cruises also owns and operates five wilderness lodges for guests of its cruisetours, plus exclusive "Direct to the Wilderness" rail service to those properties. The line's wide selection of cruisetours includes independent adventures and off-the-beaten-path destinations, like Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve, the largest national park in the U.S. For travelers seeking the highest level of service and the most time on land, the Connoisseur cruisetour is a good option, including up to 10 nights ashore following the seven-day Voyage of the Glaciers cruise. The Connoisseur trip is hosted by a tour director and includes select sightseeing outings and most meals in the fare.

Princess' special programming, North to Alaska, offers guests unique insights into the history and culture of the region with visits from local Alaskans, photography sessions, demonstrations on lumberjacking and excursions like Cook My Catch, where guests will go fishing (with a guide), then bring their fish back for chefs to prepare for dinner at one of the designated Princess lodges.

There are two new Princess cruisetours to consider for 2024. The 15-night National Parks Tour includes a seven-day cruise, visits to five national parks, scenic rail travel and a total of eight evenings across four Princess wilderness lodges. Meanwhile, the Katmai National Park Tour is a nine-day adventure that takes guests to the famed Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park & Preserve to see bears feasting on wild salmon in Alaska's wilderness.

Insider tip: While visiting Denali National Park, be sure to check out the Princess Treehouse at the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge. Built by Pete Nelson of Animal Planet's "Treehouse Masters," the treehouse offers a different perspective of Denali and features "Sappy Hour" and other fun activities.

Best for Families: Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International

Norwegian cruise line.

Race track atop the Norwegian Bliss in Alaska.

Alaska cruise ships: Norwegian Encore , Norwegian Bliss , Norwegian Jewel , Norwegian Sun , Norwegian Spirit Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Seattle ; Vancouver, British Columbia; Seward, Alaska Starting from: $349 per person for seven-night sailing between Seward and Vancouver (itineraries visit Hubbard Glacier and Skagway, or Glacier Bay, Skagway and Juneau). Available on Norwegian Jewel in April, May and June 2024.

Norwegian Cruise Line has one of the longest seasons in Alaska, extending from April through October. The line operates two of its larger ships in Alaska: Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore. These ships feature a plethora of onboard activities to keep kids and adults entertained, like racetracks, laser tag, mini-golf, complimentary kids and teen clubs, video arcades, themed parties, live performances and more. Families will also enjoy entertainment by Nickelodeon, character breakfasts, salmon bakes and sessions with a park ranger who comes on board to narrate the Glacier Bay passage. You'll find many spacious room options on board perfectly suited to larger families – especially in The Haven, the line's exclusive ship-within-a-ship concept. In addition, Norwegian Cruise Line offers select cruise deals where third and fourth guests sail free .

There are two new Alaska shore excursions for 2024: the Mendenhall Glacier Canoe Paddle & Trek and the Fly-In Norris Glacier Hike and Packraft. The first outing takes place in Juneau , where you'll paddle a 12-person canoe across Mendenhall Lake to reach the towering glacier. Prepare to be surrounded by the spectacular setting of Tongass National Park, a 400-foot waterfall and an Arctic tern nesting ground. The second excursion, also in Juneau, takes participants on a flight into the Alaska wilderness via floatplane; you'll then paddle across a pristine glacial lake and hike the surface of Norris Glacier. Unforgettable sights along the way include densely forested mountains; the mouth of the Taku Inlet, a waterway that offers access to Juneau Icefield; and plenty of wildlife, including sea lions and bald eagles.

Also new for 2024 is the option to take the Denali Talkeetna Explorer tour after your cruise. (This cruisetour previously only took place prior to the voyage.) The 13-day sea and land package, Denali Talkeetna Explorer – Northbound Cruisetour, is available on three dates in 2024 in combination with a Norwegian Jewel sailing. The package includes a seven-night cruise; a total of six nights in Fairbanks, Denali and Talkeetna; a stop at the Trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline; a riverboat cruise in Fairbanks; a visit to an Iditarod dog musher's kennel; a deluxe glass-domed Alaska Railroad journey between Fairbanks and Denali; and more. You'll also have free time to book optional shore excursions like whitewater rafting, park tours, helicopter flightseeing and other outdoor adventures.

Insider tip: If you're sailing on Norwegian Bliss or Norwegian Encore, be sure to grab a front-row seat in the Observation Lounge when sailing in Glacier Bay Park & Preserve. This expansive space on Deck 15 at the bow of the ship offers breathtaking panoramic views from the comfort of inside the ship.

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean's Ovation of the Seas at the Hubbard Glacier in Alaska.

Alaska cruise ships: Radiance of the Seas , Quantum of the Seas , Brilliance of the Seas , Ovation of the Seas Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Seward, Alaska; Vancouver, British Columbia; Seattle Starting from: $439 per person for seven-night cruise on Radiance of the Seas, Seward to Vancouver on May 24, 2024

Royal Caribbean International offers seven-night cruise-only Alaska options (some featuring the Inside Passage) and extended cruisetours (lasting nine to 13 days) with land portions before or after the voyage. Cruisetours may visit Denali National Park & Preserve, among other highlights. The line also offers select "kids sail free" itineraries, which will appeal to families.

If you want nonstop entertainment while on board, choose one of Royal Caribbean International 's two larger Quantum Class vessels: Quantum of the Seas or Ovation of the Seas. Both megaships accommodate approximately 4,900 passengers. If you prefer a smaller ship, consider booking one of the Radiance Class vessels, which hold a maximum of around 2,500 guests.

Quantum Class ships have multiple outdoor attractions that provide panoramic views of the scenery. For example, the surf simulator, FlowRider, affords views of magnificent snow-capped mountains and glaciers all around the ship. If you're adept at rock climbing, this is another chance for optimal scenic viewing – at 40 feet above the deck. Additional entertainment includes free-fall skydiving at RipCord by iFly, outdoor movie nights, live performances and musical entertainment, bumper cars, an escape room, a sports court and indoor pools for those cool Alaska summer days.

Insider tip: For more awe-inspiring vistas, take a ride on North Star. Exclusive to Royal Caribbean (on Quantum and Ovation of the Seas), the glass-enclosed capsule rises 300 feet above sea level while suspended over the ocean.

Celebrity Cruises

Alaska cruise ships: Celebrity Summit , Celebrity Edge , Celebrity Solstice Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Seward, Alaska; Vancouver, British Columbia; Seattle Starting from: $397 per person for seven-night voyage on Celebrity Summit, Seward to Vancouver on May 17, 2024

Adventure-seeking couples will have many options to choose from during Celebrity Cruises ' 2024 Alaska season. The line's six- and seven-night cruise-only itineraries include up-close views of the Dawes Glacier in the Endicott Arm Fjord and the Hubbard Glacier, the world's longest tidewater glacier at 76 miles long. For an in-depth exploration of Alaska's interior, Celebrity's cruisetours extend the trip to a maximum of 13 nights and feature small-town destinations like Talkeetna, Alaska – the quirky village that inspired the 1990s television show "Northern Exposure." There are also themed tours centered on wildlife viewing and national parks, as well as culinary tours highlighting the flavors of Alaska.

Couples will also find plenty of adult-focused activities and entertainment on board, no matter which vessel they choose. Each ship offers a spa, multiple bars and lounges, and an excellent selection of complimentary and specialty restaurants. Celebrity's three Alaska-bound ships carry between 2,158 guests (Celebrity Summit) and 2,908 passengers (Celebrity Edge). Celebrity Edge, the newest of the ships, offers immersive entertainment and especially beautiful public spaces – like Grand Plaza, a three-story venue at the heart of the vessel.

For extra privacy during your couples' vacation, consider splurging on a suite or villa in The Retreat. This all-inclusive space features luxurious accommodations; a private lounge; a sundeck (unavailable on Celebrity Solstice); and a private restaurant, Luminae at The Retreat. The swanky culinary venue serves dishes curated by renowned French chef Daniel Boulud. In addition, you'll have a team of attendants, butlers and concierges to indulge every whim.

Insider tip: Book your Alaska cruise on Celebrity Edge. The outward-facing design of the ship and expansive outdoor spaces, including the Magic Carpet, offer guests excellent viewing opportunities of Alaska's vast landscapes, calving glaciers and wildlife, including humpback whales in the Inside Passage and around Juneau and Sitka.

Best Luxury: Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea Cruises

Regent seven seas cruises.

Alaska cruise ships: Seven Seas Explorer Departure cities: Vancouver, British Columbia; Seward, Alaska Starting from: $4,699 per person (all-inclusive) for seven-night cruise, Vancouver to Seward on May 1, 2024

Regent's Seven Seas Explorer will spend the 2024 season in Alaska, with the first sailing embarking from Vancouver, British Columbia, on May 1, 2024. The line offers 20 seven-night voyages and two 14-night sailings between May and September. The 746-passenger ship provides an in-depth exploration of Alaska's wilderness, thanks to the vessel's smaller size and all-balcony suites. Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' all-inclusive fares include free unlimited shore excursions (though select tours come with a fee); complimentary fine wines and spirits; dining at specialty restaurants; 24-hour room service; unlimited Wi-Fi access; prepaid gratuities; free valet laundry service; and more. Depending on the suite category, guests may also receive a pre- and post-cruise hotel stay with their voyage.

Complimentary shore excursions are available in a number of Alaska ports. In Ketchikan, sign up for the Tongass Rainforest Expedition, the Great Alaska Lumberjack Show or the Alaskan Lodge Adventure & Seafest. (Note: Some excursions in Ketchikan, such as the Alaska Fishing & Wilderness Dining option, come with an additional fee.) In Juneau, guests can take the complimentary hiking adventure through the Mendenhall Glacier National Recreation Area, home to black bears, mountain goats and other wildlife. Cruisers can also dine on wild Alaska salmon grilled over a fire at the Gold Creek Salmon Bake.

Insider tip: Take advantage of the complimentary shore excursions during your cruise. These are tours you'd normally have to pay for on a ship that's not all-inclusive – and that can add up quickly.

Silversea Cruises

Pool bar on the Silver Nova.

Courtesy of Silversea Cruises

Alaska cruise ships: Silver Nova , Silver Muse , Silver Shadow Departure cities: Seward, Alaska; Vancouver, British Columbia Starting from: $3,450 per person for seven-night cruise, Vancouver to Seward on Silver Muse on Aug. 1, 2024

Debuted in August 2023, Silversea's latest addition, Silver Nova, is the newest luxury vessel sailing Alaska for the 2024 season. Silver Nova features an asymmetrical design and advanced technologies that make it Silversea Cruises ' most environmentally friendly vessel yet. With just 728 guests, spacious suites (some affording 270-degree views) and outdoor spaces showcasing The Great Land's pristine wilderness, Silver Nova is an excellent luxury option for an Alaska adventure. Silversea offers seven-night itineraries on its three Alaska ships, plus longer voyages on Silver Muse and Silver Shadow.

Silversea's all-inclusive fares include pre- and post-cruise hotel stays; complimentary nonalcoholic and alcoholic beverages; in-room minibars; gourmet dining; all gratuities; at least one excursion per port; butler service in every suite; and other upscale amenities. Complimentary Alaska excursions include a scenic railway tour aboard the White Pass and Yukon Railway in Skagway, the Sea Otter & Wildlife Quest in Sitka Sound and more. You can also visit the Iditarod dogs' summer camp in Juneau. For an additional cost, Silversea offers more exclusive experiences, like a helicopter ride to Mendenhall Glacier followed by a dogsledding adventure with a team of Alaskan huskies in Juneau, or a remote fly-fishing trip in Sitka.

Insider tip: Spend some time on Deck 10; you'll enjoy unobstructed views of the spectacular scenery from the comfort of the heated pool, thanks to the asymmetrical design of the pool deck.

UnCruise Adventures

Alaska cruise ships: Wilderness Discoverer, Wilderness Legacy, Safari Endeavor, Safari Explorer, Safari Quest Departure cities: Ketchikan, Juneau, Whittier, Dutch Harbor and Sitka, Alaska; Seattle Starting from: $3,600 per person for seven-night cruise, Juneau to Ketchikan (or reverse itinerary) on Wilderness Discoverer; various dates between April and September 2024

UnCruise's expedition-style small ships call on ports and remote areas in Alaska that larger ships can't access, taking guests to locales that the line coins, "UnAlaska." The five ships operating in The Great Land accommodate between 22 passengers (Safari Quest) and 86 guests (Wilderness Legacy), and there are seven-, 12- and 14-night itineraries to choose from. You can also book optional land tours, including a Denali & Talkeetna Wilderness Rail Adventure. Expedition teams take guests on kayaking, skiffing, paddleboarding, bushwhacking, waterfall walks and hiking excursions close to the glaciers and visit secluded areas and waterway passages known for optimal wildlife viewing.

Cruise fares include group transfers to and from the ship; all meals; premium wine, beer and liquor; all nonalcoholic beverages; daily activities; wellness amenities; onboard heritage and expedition guides; and access to guest experts. You'll need to disconnect from your devices in remote areas, as there is no Wi-Fi access on UnCruise vessels.

For a once-in-a-lifetime trip, book the 14-night Alaska's Fjords & Glaciers Bay Adventure Cruise on Wilderness Discoverer, a 76-passenger ship. This voyage includes birding in the South Marble Islands, where you'll see puffins, cormorants, oystercatchers and other bird species. You can also search for brown bears in Corner Bay, bushwhack in old-growth forests, visit the town of Haines to sample local brews and spirits, and more.

UnCruise has introduced a few new cruises for 2024 with a renewed focus on The Great Land. One of these is the Kids in Nature, Wild Woolly & Wow with Glacier Bay cruise. The seven-night, family-focused voyage departs round-trip from Juneau aboard Wilderness Legacy and is available on three dates between June and July. One highlight of the voyage is exploring off-the-grid in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve's "Outback."

A second new option is the seven-night Prince William Sound Explorer with Cordova cruise. This adventure visits dozens of glaciers; the small fishing village of Cordova; the Harriman and College glacial fjords; the islands of Knight and Montague; and multiple places where you can see orcas, humpback whales, sea otters, seals, sea lions, puffins and other wildlife. The itinerary is offered round-trip from Whittier, Alaska, on Safari Explorer throughout the summer.

Insider tip: Depending on your itinerary, you may be able to hop in a skiff directly off the ship to watch bears along the shore hunt for salmon just 100 feet away. This is an Alaska experience you can only have when sailing on a small ship.
