A fantastic trip, so well organised and easy . There was only 10 in our group .the guide was very informative it was about 3 hrs at the camps plenty of time to see and hear the stories. The see krakow tour company was excellent especially Marta who we dealt with for about three separate trips whilst in krakow. We were kept up to date by text and email all the time. Very efficient company!

The Jewish Quarter - Kazimierz Guided Walking Tour couldn’t be any better! The tour guide was very friendly and competent. The tour was very interesting and filled with a lot of information. I also got to know important places from the movie Schindler's list. I recommend it!

We found the tour both interesting and educational. Our guide (Conrad) was very informative and courteous throughout the three-hour tour (including a much the needed 15-minute coffee break), and both his English and knowledge of the subject matters were excellent. Alas, thanks to coronavirus, we (a family of five) were his first customers for months.

A very good guide with Conrad around the Jewish quarter giving us all the relevant information in a very professional way. Had a 15 min coffee break and Carrie do; over the river to heroes square for the more excellent info. Completing the tour at Schindler's factory, a very enjoyable experience, highly recommended for everyone.

It's the first time I've visited Poland and so far I've loved that! The trip I attended (to Wielitshka - sorry for bad spelling!) was great organized; not too long but very intense! Many thanks to the absolutely charming lady who has been our pilot today - Katazyna! Super professional, super bubbly, and always with a smile on her face. Krakow is Poland’s student city. Over 25% of the population here are students, which has led to Krakow becoming a hub for cheap food, cheap booze, and abundant bars and clubs.

But Krakow isn’t just one one-trick pony. It boasts beautiful medieval architecture, picturesque castles, and a handful of insightful (and sobering) museums and attractions.

While the city can feel rather touristy, it’s still pretty, interesting, and worth spending a few days exploring — especially if you want to learn about the grim history of World War II.

Top 5 Things to See and Do in Krakow

1. Walk the entire Royal Road

The Royal Road (sometimes called the Royal Route) stretches from the Old Town to Wawel Castle. This was once the route Polish kings took as they made their way through the city center (coronations, parades, and receptions for foreign dignitaries also took this route). The route incorporates some of the most important historical landmarks in Krakow, making for a great place to start your visit as you admire the historic buildings.

2. Tour Auschwitz

Auschwitz-Birkenau is the site of a former concentration camp used by the Nazis during World War II. Approximately 1.3 million people were sent here and an astounding 1.1 million of them were killed. When the camp was liberated in 1945, there were just 7,000 people there, many of whom were incredibly ill or sick. A visit here is sobering but shouldn’t be missed. Admission is free, but the experience is much more meaningful with a guide who can provide context. Expect to pay around 550 PLN for a guide.

3. Explore Wawel Castle

Built in the 13th century, this site is home to an art museum featuring medieval tapestries, the former Polish crown jewels, and Ottoman empire treasures. It’s one of the biggest castles in the country and represents numerous architectural styles, including those of the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods. Admission ranges from 5-46 PLN, depending on what you want to see. On Mondays in the summer, free tickets are available for the Crown Treasury and Armory. There are seasonal discounts from September to October as well for the Dragon’s Den, Sandomierska Tower, and the Church of St. Gereon.

4. Tour Schindler’s Factory

During World War II, German industrialist Oskar Schindler saved over 1,200 Jews during the war by employing them in his factory. His story was made famous by Steven Spielberg’s 1993 film, Schindler’s List . Located in the actual factory itself, this museum offers a sobering trip through the history of World War II. Admission starts at 10 PLN and there are limited free tickets available on Mondays.

5. Visit St. Mary’s Basilica

As the parish of Pope John Paul II, this iconic 13th-century church highlights the importance of religion in Polish society (93% of Poland identifies as Roman Catholic). The church itself is brick and designed in the Gothic style, looming over the Old Town. Every hour, a trumpeter plays from the tower in homage to a 13th-century trumpeter who was shot while sounding the alarm before a Mongol attack.

Other Things to See and Do in Krakow

1. take a free walking tour.

One of the best things you can do when you arrive in a new city is take a walking tour. It’s a great way to get the lay of the land and learn about the culture, people, and history of the destination. I always start my trips with one. Crakow Free Tours offers free tours in English with a variety of different focuses (such as the Jewish Quarter or Krakow at night). These tours provide much more insight than any guidebook. Just be sure to tip your guide at the end!

2. Explore the District of Kazimierz

South of the center of town is the former Jewish ghetto. It was forgotten for many years but is now the center of a vibrant artist and student population. You can visit the Jewish cemetery or take a walking tour of the neighborhood. While it’s a great place for a bite to eat, the real flavor of Kazimierz comes alive at night. Don’t miss the vodka bars for a guaranteed good time!

3. Visit the Wieliczka Salt Mine

This mine produced table salt and was first used in the 13th century. It became one of Krakow’s main industries and was in use until 2007. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can marvel over the cavernous chambers, statues, chapels, chandeliers, and cathedrals — all carved out of salt and stone by the miners! The mines reach depths of over 300 meters (984 feet) and are also home to contemporary works of art. The mine is just 13 kilometers outside the city. Admission is 109 PLN.

4. Shop at the flea markets

Go shopping early on the weekend at the open-air flea markets at Plac Nowy in Kazimierz or in the Jewish Quarter. Expect an assortment of antiques, souvenirs, food, clothing, and more. It’s a fun way to do some people-watching and get a feel for local life in the city.

5. Visit the Underground Museum

This museum traces Krakow’s medieval past through well-preserved architectural foundations and artifacts from the city’s history. The museum incorporates 3D technology and videos to show how the city grew and changed over the centuries. Admission is 28 PLN and there are limited free tickets available Tuesdays.

6. Stroll through Nowa Huta

In the years following World War II, Nowa Huta was established by the Soviets as a separate town filled with industry workers and propaganda. Lose yourself in the forgotten communist-era apartment blocks as you try to imagine what would have been if this Soviet town experiment had succeeded. It was one of the largest examples of social engineering, built to be a “utopian” city example. Now, as a popular neighborhood outside the center, it’s interesting to see how much of the Soviet influence remains. Spend some time wandering about and take in just how different this area is from Krakow’s Old Town.

7. Visit the MOCAK

The Museum of Contemporary Art is one of Krakow’s most recent additions and has a vast and varied collection of contemporary art. Opened in 2011, it actually sits on a demolished section of Schindler’s factory. It focuses almost exclusively on modern art from the past couple of decades, and while modern art isn’t my favorite type of art, the museum is still worth a visit to get a sense of the Polish art scene. Check the website to see what rotating exhibits are on during your visit. Also, download their app for more information about the exhibitions on display. Admission is 20 PLN.

8. Visit Poland’s oldest university building

Located in Jagiellonian University, the Collegium Maius (Latin for “Great College”) has been a scientific hub for research and discovery for centuries. The building dates to the 14th century and taught many famous scientists, including Copernicus (the famous Polish astronomer who argued that Earth rotated around the sun and not vice versa). The museum has a vast collection of historic scientific instruments and artifacts, including maps, globes, tools, paintings, and more. Hour-long guided tours cost 15 PLN, though you can do a self-guided tour on Wednesdays for free between 1:30-4pm.

9. Walk around the Planty

Planty Park is a large park surrounding the Old Town. It was once the moat encircling the medieval city walls but is now a beautiful 4km park that spans just over 5 acres. It’s a great escape from the busy center and is home to one of my favorite restaurants in the city, Pod Wawelem (they serve up hearty Polish cuisine). In the summer, there are lots of stalls around the park where you can grab a snack or a drink as you lounge in the shade and lounge the day away.

10. Enjoy the Botanical Garden

Jagiellonian University’s Botanical Garden is an 18th-century garden near the Old Town. Spanning 24 acres, this is the oldest botanical garden in the country (it was founded in 1783). It’s home to over 5,000 species of trees, shrubs, orchids, and other flowers. The garden is only open from April-October and makes for a nice place to go for a summer stroll. Admission is 15 PLN.

11. Explore the Polish Aviation Museum

This museum has been consistently ranked as one of the best in the world. Opened in 1964, it’s situated at the former Kraków-Rakowice-Czyzyny Airport (which is no longer in operation). There are over 200 aircraft on display here, including 22 extremely rare planes that were evacuated from a museum in Germany during World War II (so they didn’t get bombed by the Allies). There are lots of interactive displays and insightful exhibits, making this a fun place for kids and adults alike. Admission is 27 PLN and there is free entry on Tuesdays.

12. Get Your Game on at the Krakow Pinball Museum

For die-hard pinball fans, this interactive exhibition of over 80 restored retro pinball machines and 35 arcade games is a must. Tickets costs 40 PLN and all the machines are included. They even have a bar inside, which gives the place more of a hangout and less of a museum feel. It’s definitely a one-of-a-kind place for your old-school arcade favorites and an off-beat thing to do in the city.

12. Have fun at Aquapark (Park Wodny)

Park Wodny is a water park in Krakow and a great place to go if you’re traveling with kids. There are water slides, paddling pools for kids, a lazy river, rock climbing walls, and a handful of jacuzzis. If you’re looking to relax or have a bit of fun, this is the place. One-hour tickets start at 42 PLN while a full-day pass costs 78 PLN.

Krakow Travel Costs

Camping is possible outside the city (and there are plenty of campgrounds throughout the country as well). Expect to pay 40 PLN per night for a basic tent plot for two people without electricity.

Budget hotel prices – A two-star budget hotel with free Wi-Fi costs at least 200-220 PLN per night. Free breakfast is usually included as well as other basic amenities like a TV.

Airbnb is available in Krakow, with private rooms starting at 110 PLN per night (though they usually average double that). Entire homes/apartments cost at least 250 PLN.

Food – Polish meals are quite hearty, usually containing potatoes, meat (pork and chicken), and seasonal produce like beets or cabbage. Stews and soups (like borscht, a beet soup) are popular and can be found at most local restaurants. Pierogis are also a common staple and can be found everywhere for cheap. For some traditional Polish food, try beef tongue or pork knuckles. The country also has lots of traditional desserts too, like paczki (a Polish donut) and makowiec (poppy-seed cake).

Most cheap meals of traditional cuisine (served at local restaurants called bar mleczny or “milk bars”) cost around 35 PLN. For a three-course meal with a drink and table service, expect to pay 90 PLN. Fast food (think McDonald’s) costs 25 PLN for a combo meal.

A large pizza costs around 25-30 PLN while Chinese food costs around 15-20 PLN. Zapiekanki , a popular Polish street snack that’s like a pizza baguette, costs 5-6 PLN.

Beer costs 13 PLN, while a glass of wine is a minimum of 12 PLN. A latte or cappuccino is around 12.50 PLN. Bottled water is 4-5 PLN.

If you buy your own groceries and cook your meals, expect to pay around 150 PLN per week for basic staples like milk, pasta, eggs, cheese, seasonal vegetables, and some meat. The cheapest grocery store is Biedronka, which you can find almost everywhere. Outdoor markets are also a great and cheap place to get fresh produce and other local products.

Backpacking Krakow Suggested Budgets

On a backpacker budget of 155 PLN per day, you can stay in a hostel dorm, cook all your meals, limit your drinking, take public transportation to get around, and do some cheap activities like free walking tours and visiting the free museums. If you plan on drinking, add 10-20 PLN to your budget per day.

On a mid-range budget of 350 PLN per day, you can stay in a private Airbnb, eat out for all your meals at cheap milk bars, have a couple of drinks, take the occasional taxi to get around, and do more paid activities like touring Auschwitz and the salt mine.

On a “luxury” budget of 625 PLN or more per day, you can stay in a hotel, eat out anywhere you want, drink more, take more taxis, and do whatever guided tours and activities you want. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in PLN.

Krakow Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

Krakow is a very affordable city so there aren’t too many tips out there to help you save. Since this city is such a hot spot for partying, most people blow their budget on drinks. If you limit that, you’ll be able to visit without worrying about your budget too much. Here are some other ways to save money while you visit Krakow:

• Eat at milk bars – You’ll get a taste of Krakow at a mleczny (milk bars). Hearty pierogis, homemade soups, plenty of meat, and a local beer usually cost around 35 PLN. While they are a no-frills choice, the food is tasty and filling!
• Get the KrakowCard – This card provides free public transportation and access to all of the city’s main attractions (40 different sites are included). It’s a great deal if you plan on seeing a lot and it also includes public transit. It’s 265 PLN for a three-day pass and 240 PLN for a two-day pass.
• Be sure to pre-game – Krakow is known for its partying, pub crawls, and long nights out. Start off by grabbing your favorite drinks from a grocery store first whenever possible. You’ll save a ton that way.
• Take a free walking tour – Free tours from companies like Cracow Free Tours are a great way to explore the city while learning about the history, culture, and architecture. Just be sure to tip your guide at the end!
• Stay with a local – Couchsurfing is a great way to lower your accommodation costs. Not only will you save money by getting a free place to stay, but you’ll also be able to make a local friend and get insider knowledge about the city!
• Bring a water bottle – The tap water in Krakow is safe to drink so bring a reusable water bottle to save money and reduce your plastic use. LifeStraw is my go-to brand as their bottles have built in filters to ensure your water is always clean and safe.

Krakow has plenty of hostels and they’re all comfortable and sociable. These are my suggested places to stay:

How to Get Around Krakow

Public transportation – Public buses and trams cost around 6 PLN for a one-way ride with a ticket that lasts one hour. 90-minute tickets are available for around 8 PLN while 20-minute tickets are 4 PLN.

Day passes cost between 17-22 PLN depending on the number of zones and 7-day passes are 56-68 PLN. The city also offers a tourism card called the KrakowCard which, in addition to museums and activities, includes public transportation around the city. It’s 265 PLN for a three-day pass and 240 PLN for a two-day pass. You can also buy the two-day KrakowCard at a lower price without public transportation for 156 PLN.

From the Krakow Airport, there is a convenient airport train that goes to the main station for 14 PLN and runs every half hour. There is also a slightly cheaper city bus for 6 PLN (included in the KrakowCard). The journey takes just under an hour.

Taxi – In general, taxis in Krakow start at 7 PLN and go up by 2.30 PLN per kilometer. Just make sure you use official taxis as there are often illegal taxis that try to take fares (and who will also overcharge you). Official taxis have the company logo and phone number on the car. They also use a meter.

To ensure you get a reputable company, have your hotel/hostel call a taxi before you go just to be safe.

Bicycle – Companies like KRK Bike Rental and Krakow Bike Tour, offer rentals for 50-60 PLN per day. For a guided bicycle tour that lasts a few hours, expect to pay closer to 90-115 PLN per person.

There are also scooter share programs like Hulaj that cost 2 PLN to start and then 0.55 PLN per minute after that.

Ridesharing – Uber is available in Krakow and it’s the cheapest option if you need to get somewhere and don’t want to take public transit.

Car rental – You don’t need a car to get around Krakow, however, if you plan on exploring the region you can find rentals for around 75 PLN per day for a multi-day rental. Drivers must have had their license for at least one year and an International Driving Permit (IDP) is required for citizens of certain countries.

When to Go to Krakow

The best (and most popular) time to visit Krakow is during the summer (June to August). Temperatures are hot and rain is infrequent with daily highs around 23°C (75°F). These are also the busiest months of the year for tourism, though and you’ll only really notice it in the Old Town and at some of the larger attractions.

The shoulder seasons (late April-May and September-October) are great times to visit as well. You’ll beat the crowds while enjoying milder temperatures. You’ll get more rain in the spring but also blooming flowers while the fall offers stunning autumn colors.

Winter in Krakow can be quite cold, with temperatures dropping to 0°C (32°F) during the day and down to -5°C (23°F) overnight. Snow is common, which can affect conditions if you’re traveling by car. In short, I wouldn’t recommend a winter visit unless you plan on leaving the city to go skiing or take part in other winter activities. That said, the Christmas market here in December is popular and worth spending a day at if you visit in the winter.

How to Stay Safe in Krakow

Poland is consistently ranked one of the safest countries in the world. Of course, you’ll still want to take some precautions while you’re here. Theft and pickpocketing are rare but they can still occur so keep your valuables out of sight in busy tourist areas and while on crowded public transportation.

Taxi scams in Krakow are rare, but always make sure your driver is using the meter. If they aren’t, ask them to stop and find a taxi that will.

Solo travelers (including solo female travelers) should find the city quite safe. However, you’ll still want to make sure you take the standard precautions when you’re out exploring (don’t accept drinks from strangers, don’t walk home alone at night while intoxicated, etc.).

ATM skimming can occur here, so always make sure you use verified ATMs. If you can, go into the bank to withdraw your money (as opposed to using outdoor ATMs that are easier to tamper with).

If you rent a car, don’t leave any valuables in it at night. Break-ins are rare but it’s always better to be safe than sorry!

There is no risk of any real natural disasters or terrorism in Krakow, so as long as you pay attention to your surroundings and follow the tips above you should be able to have a fun and safe trip.

If you’re wanting to extend your trip to Krakow beyond the city’s attractions, it’s time to start thinking about the many different day trips from Krakow you can do!

You’re in luck, too – most of the day trips from Krakow can be done by train or public transport ! If not, though, there’s always the option to take a day trip tour from Krakow before you have to resort to hiring a car.

From painted villages and mountaintop castles to emerald green lakes , fast-growing cities and horrifying history , there is a day trip from Krakow to suit every type of traveller – regardless of your budget.

On my first visit to Krakow I stayed in the city for five days and four nights. This meant that I had a couple of opportunities to break out of the city and take some day trips! I opted to visit Rzeszow and Zakopane , but it was so tricky narrowing down the many day trips available to just two.

I did a tonne of research into the Krakow day trips to make my decision, and there’s no point in that research going to waste! That’s why, today, I’m sharing my top picks for the very best day trips from Krakow – by train, bus, car or tour!

Top tip: The currency in Krakow (and all of Poland) is the Polish Zloty (PLN), but I have listed most of the prices in this post in Euros to keep everything simple.

Which is the Best Day Trip From Krakow For You?

It can definitely be overwhelming to choose from 16 different day trips from Krakow! If you’re in a hurry and just want answers, fast, here are my top picks for the best day trips from Krakow!

Best Day Trips from Krakow, Poland

1. zakopane.

The mountain town of Zakopane is one of the very best day trips from Krakow. It’s at the base of the Tatra Mountains , right on the Slovakian border, and you simply won’t believe how beautiful this area of Poland is!

Before travelling to Krakow, I didn’t even know that Poland had a mountain range, so I was blown away to discover this gorgeous area. 

Zakopane is a popular destination year-round . In summer, visitors flock to the area to embark on epic hikes around the mountains, and in the colder months Zakopane is home to some Polish Christmas Markets and excellent skiing!

Whilst you’re on your Zakopane one day trip from Krakow you absolutely have to eat some of the local cheese, Oscypek , which is absolutely DELICIOUS and sold all over town.

You can’t visit Zakopane without getting the cable car up to the top of the mountain. The views from the top are awe-inspiring!

Although there are lots of tacky tourist attractions at the top of the mountain, I recommend walking just five minutes or so and you’ll find yourself far away from all the other tourists with epic views all to yourself.

How to Get to Zakopane from Krakow

If you’re visiting Zakopane on a day trip from Krakow, you can get there by either train, bus or guided tour. 

The train and the bus both take a similar amount of time (around 2 hours and 30 minutes ). The bus costs around €4 each way, and the train costs around €5.30 each way.

The main issue with doing this is that you’ll be limited to staying in Zakopane, which is a very small town. Unless you’re going hiking, there’s probably not enough to do there to fill an entire day.

For this reason, I chose to go on this full-day tour because it meant I was able to explore Zakopane as well as nearby areas and some thermal pools without the stress of using public transport. It includes includes transportation, local cheese tasting, a cable car ticket in Zakopane and entry to the thermal pools! You can read my full review here .

2. Wieliczka Salt Mine

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is probably the easiest of all of these day trips from Krakow since it’s just a short bus ride from the city. This makes it really easy to fit into your Krakow itinerary !

The Wieliczka Salt Mine has been welcoming tourists since 1772, so it’s no wonder that it’s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most popular places to visit in Poland! Salt was produced from the mine from the 13th century up until 2007!

You’re able to explore parts of the salt mine on guided tours, which last for two hours and lead you through the labyrinth of underground tunnels and salty attractions, including sculptures made from salt!

The Wieliczka Salt Mine also contains an epic underground lake and four extravagant salt chapels.

You’ll need to buy a ticket from their website to visit the salt mine, which costs 100 PLN (€21.30) for a foreign language tour. Be careful when you’re buying your ticket – don’t accidentally book a Polish guided tour!

How to Get to Wieliczka Salt Mine from Krakow  

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is super easy to visit on a day trip from Krakow – you can get there by either bus or train. The bus takes around 30 minutes, and the train takes around 20 minutes.

This guided tour runs trips visiting both Wieliczka Salt Mine and Auschwitz in one day, which is ideal if you’re short on time but want to experience two of the very best day trips from Krakow.

3. Auschwitz Birkenau

Over 1 million people a year visit the two death camps, Auschwitz and Birkenau, to pay their respects to the approximately 1.3 million people who suffered unimaginable horrors here during the holocaust. 

There’s no doubt that a visit to Auschwitz is not a fun or lighthearted day out. It’ll probably be one of the most emotionally draining days of your life, but everybody who visits says that it is unmissable. Visiting a Nazi concentration camp isn’t exactly supposed to be fun.

It’s a good idea to briefly read about Auschwitz during the war before you visit so that you have some context.

The two sites are 3km apart, and it takes 30-40 minutes to walk between the two. However, there are also free shuttle buses that transport tourists between the two camps. Of course, if you have booked a guided tour, your tour guide will arrange for your transportation.

It’s essential to book your visit to Auschwitz in advance . Since such a huge number of visitors to Krakow (and elsewhere in Poland) visit Auschwitz every day, the queues to book guided tours (which are mandatory in summer) can be over two hours long. For this reason, you absolutely need to either book in advance or join a guided tour from Krakow to skip the queues.

How to Get to Auschwitz from Krakow

This exceptionally rated tour costs €38 and includes your entry tickets, transportation from Krakow and a knowledgeable guide. Make sure you book as far in advance as possible to secure a spot on the tour of your choice. Places sell out far in advance!

If you want to visit Auschwitz independently, note that you should still book an entry ticket in advance to avoid queues . You can catch the public bus from Krakow to Auschwitz, which costs around €3 each way and takes two hours.

There’s also the option to catch the train from Krakow to Auschwitz in about 1 hour and 50 minutes, and tickets cost around €6 each way.

Some people who are limited for time combine visiting Auschwitz and the Wieliczka Salt Mines in one day. This guided tour visits both places in one day.

Zalipie has got to be the cutest village in Poland , and it’s still a hidden gem so it’s the perfect place to visit if you want to get off the beaten path in Poland. 

In this small village, you’ll find a collection of tiny wooden cottages all painted with beautiful flower motifs and lots of bright colours.

The tradition of painting the cottages in Zalipie started over a century ago when the women of the village decided to paint over any faults on their cottage with bright paint they made from the fat of the dumplings they cooked. 

The tradition has been passed down through generations, with today’s residents taking inspiration from nature and local folklore and incorporating this into their art. 

On a day trip to Zalipie don’t miss paying a visit to the House of Maralek , where you’ll learn more about the village’s fascinating tradition. You can even join in on an art workshop! You’ll spend most of your time in Zalipie outdoors, this is one of the best day excursions from Krakow.

Since Zalipie is so tiny you really don’t need to spend a full day here. A couple of hours will be plenty . For this reason, if you visit early in the day you’ll be able to return to Krakow in time to visit a few attractions in the city on the same day.

How to Get to Zalipie from Krakow

Zalipie is around 90km from Krakow, and there is no way to get there directly by public transport. You’ll need to either join a tour or hire a car . This tour costs €42.50 and lasts 6 hours – which includes around three hours spent in Zalipie, a tour guide, and return transportation by minibus.

Top tip: this tour will only run if there are a minimum of two people booked on to it, so if you’re a solo traveller there’s a possibility it may not go ahead. It may be worth trying to convince another solo traveller to join you to guarantee your trip!

Visiting Warsaw is probably the most gruelling day trip you can take from Krakow, as the train takes around 2.5 hours each way , but if you’re not afraid of getting out of bed early and you only have a few days to discover Poland, it’ll be well worth it. If you have extra time to spare, Warsaw is one of the best weekend trips from Krakow!

The capital city of Poland has enough to keep you occupied for a few days by itself, but if all you have is one day then you’ll have to focus on the city’s star attractions. Don’t miss the colourful Market Square in the Old Town, the Warsaw Uprising Museum and the Royal Castle. 

Warsaw is one of the best places to visit in Poland in the winter since there’s so much to do indoors!

The best way to round off your day trip to Warsaw from Krakow is by checking out the view from the 30th-floor viewing deck at the top of the Palace of Culture and Science . This is the tallest building in Poland, and is viewed as Stalin’s “parting gift” to the nation.

How to Get to Warsaw from Krakow

If you want to visit Warsaw in one day, you’ll need to book your train tickets as far in advance as possible . I was planning to do this day trip from Krakow, but I looked two days in advance and the trains I needed to take were already fully booked!

Since you’ll need to use the express Krakow to Warsaw train for this trip, you’ll unfortunately have to pay a premium. Single tickets in 2nd class cost around €36 , so you’re looking at around €72 just on transportation for the day. Yikes!

Another suggestion for an unusual day trip from Krakow is the small city of Rzeszów, which is the perfect size to be able to explore thoroughly in one day. The city also doesn’t see too many international tourists, so a visit to Rzeszów feels like a taste of the “real” Poland .

Start your visit to Rzeszów at the City Hall and Market Square, the most beautiful part of the city. The buildings that line the square are painted in beautiful pastel colours and look like the idea of a Polish Old Town you were probably dreaming of when you planned your trip. 

From the Market Square, head over to the 3 Maja pedestrian street, probably the most beautiful area of Rzeszów’s Old Town, and do some window shopping. 

For a bit of history, don’t miss the imposing Rzeszów Castle and the Lubomirski Summer Palace just across the road. Spend the rest of the day enjoying pierogi, strolling the city and paying a visit to the Revolutionary Act Monument.

Getting to Rzeszów from Krakow

It’s straightforward to get to Rzeszów from Krakow via public transport. It’s one of the easiest train trips you can do from Krakow! You can catch the train or the bus . The train is far quicker and takes around 90 minutes . The bus takes around 2 hours and 20 minutes.

Rzeszów is one of my favourite train trips from Krakow, and I did this train journey myself. The views out of the window over the Polish countryside were stunning! Some train services do sell out, so it’s better to book your tickets at least a few hours in advance, and you can get them here .

7. Energylandia

If you’re into amusement parks, you should definitely head to Energylandia, the biggest in Poland!

This amusement park contains a water park as well as a huge theme park, which includes a range of adrenaline-inducing roller coasters.

There’s also a family zone with rides that are more suitable for young kids, so if you’re visiting Krakow as a family this could be the ideal day trip for you.

Entry tickets cost 149 PLN (€31.50) for adults and 99 PLN (€21) for children. Their website often has ticket discounts and deals, so it’s worth checking if any deals are running before you buy!

How to Get to Energylandia from Krakow

The Energylandia website has information regarding shuttle bus services to and from the park from Krakow, which cost 29 PLN (€6.15) per person for a return ticket. You can find out more about the bus service here .

8. Katowice

Known as Poland’s industrial capital , this city in the mining region of the country is changing rapidly, so now is a great time to visit before it’s changed completely! The majority of the best things to do in Katowice are all located in the city centre. This makes it easy to see the city in one day. 

The Silesian Museum, which is housed in a former coal mine, is an unmissable attraction in the city and teaches visitors all about the history of the Silesian region.

It’s also worth paying a visit to Spodek , an arena that looks like a massive UFO, and the Nikiszowiec district, a residential area of the city that still looks as it did over 100 years ago. 

How to Get to Katowice from Krakow

If you’re wondering where to go from Krakow by train, Katowice is one of the best day trips from Krakow by train since it’s so easy to get to. Direct trains run between the two cities and take around 1 hour and 54 minutes each way. 2nd class tickets cost around €3.30 each way.

Although travel in Poland is cheap overall, the low price of train tickets for this day trip option make it one of the cheapest day trips from Krakow!

9. Wadowice

This small town in Southern Poland can easily be done as a half-day trip from Krakow , which is ideal if you’re short on time. It’s famous for being the birthplace and hometown of Karol Wojtyla, the man who later became Pope John Paul II.

The most popular thing to do for visitors to Wadowice is to visit Pope John Paul II’s former home , which nowadays is a museum. The museum consists of four floors and 16 zones telling the story of Pope John Paul II’s life, as well as the original flat itself, which is decorated as if the Wojtyla family was still living there. 

Although the museum focuses on Pope John Paul II, it also documents what Wadowice was like in the inter-war years, and tells the story of the town’s Jewish population during WW2.

Whilst you’re in Wadowice you should also definitely stop by a cafe to sample Kremówka , a Polish cream pie.

It’s humorously referred to as the “Papal pie” after a story was published from Pope John Paul II’s youth. Apparently, the future pope ate eighteen Kremówkas when competing against a friend to see who could eat the most. Despite this tremendous effort, the eighteen were not enough and he did not win!

How to Get to Wadowice from Krakow

To get to Wadowice on a day trip from Krakow, you can drive there, catch the bus or train, or join a guided tour. Buses depart frequently from Krakow MDA (bus station), and the train departs from Kraków Łagiewniki, taking around 1 hour and 20 minutes .

If you’re looking for a tour, this tour is great value for money as it combines a trip to Wadowice with Kalwaria , a pilgrimage town established in 1601 and famous for its complex of 42 churches and chapels.

10. Lanckorona

This village is just about as far off the beaten path as you can get, which makes it the perfect day trip from Krakow for adventurous travellers.

It’s hardly the traditional day trip filled with must-visit attractions, but if you want to see traditional village life in Poland , this is a wonderful destination for you.

On arrival in Lanckorona, stroll through the village and check out the old wooden houses before stopping off at one of the adorable coffee and ice cream shops for a sweet treat.

If you’re feeling energetic, take the steep walk out of the village to find the Lanckorona castle ruins and enjoy the views you’ll be rewarded with over the surrounding area.

Lanckorona is the perfect palace to visit during the summer and autumn when the village comes alive and lots of local families visit for a relaxed day out. However, it’s worth remembering that, since it’s such a small place, there are not too many tourist attractions there.

Lanckorona is ideal if you’re looking to take a relaxed walk, see Polish village life, and spend some time away from the city.

Getting to Lanckorona from Krakow

The easiest way to get to Lanckorona is to drive, but if that’s not possible you can catch the train. The journey to Kalwaria Zebrzydowska Lanckorona station takes around 70 minutes, and then you’ll need to take a taxi for the final 9 minutes to the village.

11. Dunajec River Gorge

Running through the Pieniny Mountains in Southern Poland and Northern Slovakia, the Dunajec River is stunning, and easily one of the most beautiful day trips from Krakow.

12. Ojców National Park

If you want to explore the natural beauty surrounding Krakow, you can head just 24km away to Ojców National Park, one of the best day trips from Krakow!

Ojców National Park is the very best day trip you can take from Krakow if you’re on a tight budget. You can expand your time in Krakow on a budget by doing all the Krakow free activities and visiting Ojców. You get there by hiring a bike or taking the bus, and entry to the park is free!

Once you’re at the national park, you can spend the entire day cycling, hiking or picnicking, making it a very budget-friendly day out. 

As well as relaxing nature, you’ll also find a few castles in the national park, which are referred to as the “ Eagles’ Nest Castles “. You won’t be able to follow the 25-castle route in its entirety on your day trip, but you can definitely pay a visit to the renaissance Pieskowa Skała castle. 

If castles aren’t your thing, the best thing to do in Ojców National Park is to go hiking, and there are plenty of well-marked trails in the park to choose from.

How to Get Ojców National Park from Krakow

Since Ojców is so close to Krakow, you can choose to either cycle there or catch the bus. The bus departs from Czarnowiejska in Krakow, taking 48 minutes to get to Ojców. Tickets cost around €1 each way.

13. Ogrodzieniec Castle

It’s big, it’s romantic, and it looks straight out of a medieval fantasy book – Ogrodzieniec Castle is one of the more unusual day trips from Krakow, but those who do make the journey there will be rewarded with a fascinating castle to explore.

You can visit the Ogrodzieniec Castle all year round, but this is probably one of the best winter day trips from Krakow as you’ll find the castle covered with snow with barely any other tourists in sight. 

Although it has been rebuilt numerous times, the original castle on the site was built in the 14th century . Nowadays, it’s part of the “Eagles Nest” trail of castles in the area, has featured in an Iron Maiden music video, and more recently was used as a filming location for Netflix’s “The Witcher” series. 

Entry tickets to the castle cost €4 for adults and €2.80 for children. You can purchase them on arrival at the castle.

How to Get to Ogrodzieniec Castle from Krakow

At around 70km from Krakow, the drive to Ogrodzieniec Castle takes around 1 hour and 20 minutes . If you don’t have your own method of transportation, the only other way you’ll be able to see the castle without spending over five hours of the day on public transport is by joining a tour.

This 10-hour tour visits three of the Eagles Nest Castles, including Ogrodzieniec Castle.

14. Babia Gora National Park

Another fabulous hiking day trip from Krakow is to Babia Gora National Park, which is the perfect mountainous escape from the city. Babia Gora National Park also offers knockout views of the Tatra Mountains National Park, so you get to experience the beauty of both national parks in one day trip!

The highest peak in the national park is Babia Gora vel Diablak , which stands at 1725 metres, and this is the most popular place to hike in the national park.

There are several different trails to the top, of varying distances and difficulty, so it’s worth doing some prior research to pick one that meets what you’re looking for.

If you don’t fancy hiking to the summit, there are plenty of more moderate hikes in the Babia Gora National Park, where you’ll still find breathtaking scenery and viewpoints. 

The weather at Babia Gora National Park is infamous for being unpredictable, so if you’re visiting here make sure you pack the right things – warm clothing, hiking equipment and waterproofs are a must!

How to Get to Babia Gora National Park from Krakow

This day trip is one you’ll have to do independently , as at the time of writing there are no guided tours to the area and getting there by public transport is tedious. You’ll need to hire a car to visit Babia Gora National Park. The drive is around 80km and will take you around 1 hour and 45 minutes from Krakow.

If not, you’ll have to catch the train from Krakow to Sucha Beskidzka and then get a taxi for the final 17 miles to the national park.

15. Morskie Oko

At 1,395m above sea level, the lake of Morskie Oko is arguably the most popular place to visit in the Tatra Mountain National Park. Surrounded by steep mountains and crystal clear waters, there’s no doubt that it’s one of the most naturally beautiful places in Poland!

The 9km Morskie Oko hike takes around 2.5 hours, and you can visit the lake at any time of year. For the best, clearest skies you’ll want to visit in summer. Unfortunately, though, everybody else visits Morskie Oko in summer too, so expect heavy crowds! 

The best way to avoid the crowds is to visit outside of the school summer holidays, on a weekday, and either early in the morning or later in the afternoon. If you’re visiting in winter, keep in mind that the lake is frozen over from November to May.

Swimming is forbidden in the lake, but its staggering beauty means the hike up to it will still be worth it! 

How to Get to Morskie Oko from Krakow

If you’re a confident driver, the easiest way to get here by far is to hire a car. However, it’s also pretty convenient to catch the shuttle bus that runs between Krakow and Morskie Oko. 

The bus departs Krakow at 7am, arriving at Morskie Oko at around 9am, then departs back for Krakow at 4:45pm, arriving in the city at 7pm. Return tickets cost €12.50 . The bus will drop you off at the trailhead, and then you’ll be able to embark on the Morskie Oko hike from there.

Home to an incredibly well-preserved old town , the southeastern city of Tarnów is a quick and easy city to visit on a day trip from Krakow. The city was one of the first Polish cities to be occupied by the Nazis in WW2, and you’ll be able to find out more about the occupation at the town’s many museums.

The best place to start your visit to Tarnów is the Main Square, which is surrounded by renaissance-style houses, the red-brick Tarnów Cathedral and the gothic-style Town Hall.

Next, head to the Jewish Quarter, where you’ll find plenty of plaques documenting the history of the Jewish community in Tarnów, which was tragically destroyed during the Nazi occupation.

This area of Poland is famous for its wooden churches , and there are a couple that you can walk to from the city, so if you have time to spare it’s definitely worth checking them out. 

Since the city feels like a mini version of Krakow, one of the best things to do in Tarnów is to wander aimlessly, looking at the beautiful buildings and exploring its medieval alleyways.

Unlike Krakow, you’ll find hardly any other tourists here, so it’s the perfect getaway from the crowds.

How to Get to Tarnów from Krakow

Tarnów is one of the best places to visit near Krakow by train since the train journey is direct and takes just 1 hour and 11 minutes from Krakow Główny station. Second class tickets cost €3.80 each way, and you can get them here .

17. Ostrava, Czechia

I bet you didn’t know that you can do a day trip to Czechia from Krakow, but it’s possible! Ostrava is the third-largest city in Czechia, and it’s the perfect day trip from Krakow if you want to dip your toes into another country.

Ostrava is famous for being a coal-mining city, and the national monument of Dolni Vitkovice is the most famous coal mine of them all. You can tour the mine, its blast furnace, and check out its Bolt Tower (christened by Usain Bolt). Cool, right?

Tie in your trip to Dolni Vitkovice with a visit to the Landek Park Mining Museum, where you can explore an underground coal mine. For more (!!) mining related learning, head over to the Michal Coal Mine for a guided tour.

For cool views of the city, and a non-mining activity in Ostrava, you’ll want to head up the New City Hall Viewing Tower. Round off your day trip to Ostrava with some authentic Czech beer. It’d be rude to leave without trying some, right?

The direct train from Krakow to Ostrava takes 2 hours and 15 minutes . Tickets cost around €10 each.

18. Bielsko-Biala

We’re getting truly off the beaten path here, and heading to Bielsko-Biala, one of the best non-touristy cities to visit near Krakow. Most tourists have never heard of Bielsko-Biala, but it’s actually known within Poland as “Little Vienna”.

As you walk around you’ll notice the Viennese influence on the architecture here. It almost feels like you’re exploring Vienna on a day trip from Krakow – but you haven’t even left Poland!

The Old Town is absolutely stunning, but completely free of tourists. It’s like wandering around Krakow’s old town, but without having to share with with thousands of others. Nice, right?

Once you’ve polished off your Bielsko-Biala sightseeing, head to the outskirts of the city to take the cable car up to Szyndzielnia mountain. The views up there are gorgeous!

How to Get to Bielsko-Biala from Krakow

You can reach Bielsko-Biala from Krakow by bus or train. The direct bus journey takes 1 hour and 45 minutes and costs around €7 . If you want to travel to Bielsko-Biala by train, you’ll need to take two trains, but the journey still takes less than 2 hours and costs €10 each way.

19. Cieszyn

Another Czech day trip option from Krakow is Cieszyn, which was divided by the Poland-Czechia border in the 1920s. You can actually visit both the Polish and Czech side of the town on your day trip.

The main thing to do in Cieszyn is just vibe – it has a huge coffee culture that all but invites you to kick back with a cup of coffee and relax. Wander around the charming Old Town, head up to Castle Hill and explore the Museum of Cieszyn Silesia, one of the oldest museums in Central Europe.

How to Get to Cieszyn from Krakow

Getting to Cieszyn from Krakow is quite the mission for a day trip, so this could be a better suggestion for a weekend trip from Krakow, but I wanted to include it in this list just to be complete.

The easiest way to get to Cieszyn from Krakow is via bus, which takes around 3 hours and tickets cost €7.50 each way.

Kielce is such an underrated city trip from Krakow!

One of the main attractions in Kielce is the Palace of the Kraków Bishops, which houses the Museum of Kielce Village. This museum gives you a glimpse into the traditional way of life in the area and features exhibits on local crafts, folk art, and architecture.

Another must-visit during your time in Kielce is the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity. This stunning neo-Gothic church has an impressive collection of stained glass windows and intricate wood carvings.

With its numerous architectural monuments, unique churches, ancient castles, and many historic sites to explore, Krakow has always piqued the interest of spectators and connoisseurs of high art.

It turns out that there is a lot of history to absorb, plenty of delicious food to eat, and so much to do in this city that was once elected the European Capital of Culture.

1. Auschwitz-Birkenau

Watching movies about the Holocaust is one thing, but visiting the place where it all took place is an entirely different thing.

To get a clearer picture of what really happened during what’s widely termed as the darkest time in history, you need to visit the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp, which is one of the concentration camps located just an hour’s drive from Krakow.

2. Wieliczka Salt Mine

Many travelers consider this salt mine, which is the oldest salt mine in the world, a ‘must-see’ when visiting Krakow.

4. Tatra Mountain National Park

This park is known to be the most Alpine of all national parks in the country.

Another huge attraction is the cable railway on Kasprowy Wierch, which is one of the oldest constructions of its kind in Poland.

Tatra National Park is also the natural habitat of unique animal species, including wolf, wildcat, lynx, bear, marmot, and chamois.

At the park, you can engage in many activities, including paragliding, skiing, mountain climbing, hiking, and cycling.

5. Wadowice

This is one spiritual tour that you can’t afford to miss, especially if you are a Catholic.

Wadowice is the birthplace of Pope John Paul II, and a tour to the place will enable you to explore the saint’s family home, the place of his baptism, and where he went to high school.

6. Czestochowa

7. Dunajec River Gorge

The trail of the Eagles’ Nests, which is the trail of medieval kings and knights, is one of the most beautiful and popular tourist trails in Poland.

The name of the trail is derived from the ruins of fortresses and castles, popularly known as Eagles’ Nests, which were built on top of steep hills.

1. Stay in the Center of Krakow

Without a doubt, the best place to stay in Krakow is the Old Town, in the heart of the city.

While in many parts of the world this might be a very expensive option, the cost of accommodation in Krakow is still reasonable enough to make a city-center stay very affordable. This is particularly true if you opt for a privately owned apartment.

But also hotel prices are very reasonable compared to Western Europe. So if you ever wanted to stay at a really nice hotel but couldn’t justify it, this might just be your chance. Check out Hotel Unicus Palace – a wonderful place to stay in the heart of the city.

Staying in the Old Town means that you’ll have all of Krakow’s main attractions right on your doorstep. But thanks to the unique construction of its large, old buildings, you won’t get any of the noise typically associated with staying in the city center.

If you’re lucky, you might find an apartment or a hotel close enough to St Mary’s Basilica to be able to hear the bugler perform the hourly hejnał mariacki (bugle call) – a sound that will forever remind you of your stay in beautiful Krakow!

TIP: If you’re looking for somewhere a little less crowded, but still very central and perfect for sightseeing, consider staying in Kazimierz . It’s a quaint and beautiful Jewish Quarter located just a 10 to 15-minute walk from Krakow’s Old Town. Accommodation here is cheaper and you can find some amazing value for your money. 2. Avoid Peak Season If You Can

The most popular time to visit Krakow is from June to August when the temperatures are high, the parks are green and the banks of the Vistula come alive with barbecues and picnics.

Of course, the popularity of the peak season comes at a price – the city is busy, queues are long, and the prices for accommodation and some attractions are higher. It can also get too warm to enjoy the city… So consider if visiting at a different time of year would suit you better.

April to May and September to October are lovely times to visit Krakow. The temperatures are mild (although it can be quite chilly in the evenings) and the city is a lot less crowded. Accommodation prices are lower and you don’t have to queue everywhere. Krakow is a great destination for a spring break in Europe !

Winter is the least popular season, but having visited at this time of the year, I can say that it surely has its charm. The Christmas-card perfection of the frosty city, the festive Christmas markets, and the cozy restaurants mean that this is a season that shouldn’t be overlooked! Most attractions are still open, but both queues and prices tend to be far lower.

TIP: Take a walk in the city early in the morning or late at night. It’s magical without the crowds.

3. Book in Advance

Krakow may be a small city, but it is very busy in peak season and its popularity is growing all the time. Hotels in the city center are often fully booked in peak season and the best price-quality deals are always gone first. So if you have a specific hotel in mind you need to book well ahead of your visit.

If you waited too long to book the hotel of your choice, try looking for an apartment instead. These tend to have more availability than hotels at busy times.

Tickets to popular tours and attractions are also worth booking in advance, mainly to avoid long queues. This is particularly true for the Wieliczka Salt Mine , where the ticket hall becomes incredibly crowded during peak season, and for Auschwitz , where booking in advance is essential (or you won’t be able to visit at all).

Wawel Royal Castel , home to Polish kings and queens and considered Poland’s most important collection of buildings, is not to be missed in Krakow. You can view the magnificent exterior and walk around for free (or join this great-value guided tour and learn more about the place).

However, if you want to view the Castle’s impressive art collection or visit the splendid Royal Apartments, then you should buy the tickets in advance . Entry to the interior of the Castle is strictly timed, so you may find yourself waiting for several hours during busy times if you haven’t booked ahead (or not be able to visit at all).

4. Take Advantage of Free Activities and Free Days

There are many ways to experience Krakow on a low budget, while still being able to see everything that you want to see!

The Church of SS Peter & Paul, the grounds of Wawel Castle, the impressive Market Square and the historic architecture of St. Florian’s Gate can all be enjoyed at no charge. So too can Kazimierz, which boasts the oldest synagogue in Krakow (also free to visit). Plus, of course, there’s the beautiful Planty Park – lush and green in the summer and the perfect place for a stroll.

There are a variety of free walking tours available, usually starting from Market Square, although it is customary (and polite) to leave a tip at the end.

Auschwitz is free to visit as an independent traveler, although it’s important to note that you still need to book your free ticket. Please see our article about visiting Auschwitz for more information.

Many attractions that charge for tickets also offer FREE entrance on certain days of the week. So always check before you buy, but please note that you may still need to book a free ticket! Attractions offering free days include Schindler’s Factory, the National Museum, Wawel Castle, St Francis Basilica, the Cloth Hall, and Rynek Underground.

5. Save Money with the Krakow Card

The Krakow City Pass Krakow Card can be a worthwhile investment if you plan to fit a lot of sightseeing into your stay, but your visit doesn’t coincide with any of the ‘free days’ suggested above.

This includes entry to more than 40 attractions and museums and free public transport. Here are just a few examples of what’s included: Oskar Schindler’s Factory, Main Market Underground Museum, Pharmacy “Under Eagle”, Town Hall Tower, St. Mary’s Church, The Barbican The Old Synagogue, City Defense Walls, Former Gestapo Headquarters at Pomorska Street, The Old Synagogue, The National Museum, and many more.

This card is only worth it though if you are actually staying in the city itself for 2 or 3 days (so not counting the day trips that most people do from Krakow).

6. Learn a Few Words in Polish

Locals really appreciate it if you try to speak a few words in Polish. Just a ‘hello’ or a ‘thank you’ can get you a long way. Here are a few Polish words you may want to know:

• Dzień dobry = hello – good morning / good afternoon
• Dobry wieczór = good evening
• Do widzenia  = good bye
• Proszę  = please
• Dziękuję  = thank you
• Przepraszam  = Excuse me/ sorry
• Nie rozumiem = I don’t understand
• Tak  = yes
• Nie  = no
• Na zdrowie!  = Cheers!

7. Be Smart When Exchanging Money

Even though Poland is part of the EU, it is not a member of the Eurozone, so the Euro is not accepted there. Poland uses the zloty, which you will often see abbreviated to PLN. 1 zloty is made up of 100 groszy (the equivalent of pennies or cents).

There are many currency exchange offices ( Kantor ) throughout Krakow, but the rates they offer can vary widely, with the worst rates usually offered in the city center. It is worth comparing the rates between offices before exchanging your cash, or – better – just withdraw cash from an ATM.

During our visit, we calculated that it was much cheaper for us to withdraw cash from the ATM using our foreign bank card than to exchange cash. It is usually cheaper to make one large withdrawal than several smaller ones.

All major debit and credit cards are widely accepted in Krakow, but – as everywhere in Europe – it’s best to use VISA or MasterCard with a chip and a 4-digit pin. American Express or Diners Club cards aren’t ideal for traveling in Europe. Many banks charge a foreign currency fee per transaction, so if you don’t yet have a card with no foreign transaction fees , it might be smart to get one.

PRO TIP: When withdrawing money from an ATM or when paying for purchases, you’ll always be asked to choose the currency for the transaction. Always choose the LOCAL CURRENCY (so in Krakow, Polish zloty) and let your bank do the exchange. This is a known trick that can cost you 3-15% extra if you accept the suggested conversion rate and choose to pay in your own currency. This is something to remember for all your international trips!

8. Enjoy Krakow on Foot

One of the most wonderful things about Krakow is that it’s compact, so it’s possible to get around very comfortably on foot and see most of the attractions. Not only does it save money, but it gives you a true feel of the sights and sounds of day-to-day life in the city.

Negotiating Krakow is very simple. The center of the city is made up of the Old Town and Wawel Hill, home to the historic Wawel Castle. The Vistula River borders the city on one side and Planty Park borders the other.

TIP: If you want to see the highlights of the Old Town and familiarize yourself with the city, you can also opt for this highly-rated walking tour with a local . Try to do this at the beginning of your visit, so that you can take advantage of the local tips and recommendations during the rest of your stay!

TIP: If you’re visiting Krakow in winter, bring waterproof shoes! The snow is not always removed from the pavements, so they can become quite ‘slushy’ and muddy!

9. Live Like a Local and Use Public Transport

Krakow’s bus and tram system is cheap and efficient and a great way to get around the city. Although you might want to avoid rush hours (7 am-9 am and 3 pm-5 pm) when traffic often comes to a standstill!

Buy your tickets before you board, either from a ticket machine at a bus or tram stop, or from a kiosk. On some trams and buses, you can buy tickets from a machine onboard – those selling them have an ‘A’ sign over the door. It is possible to buy your ticket from the driver, but you need to have exactly the right change. You can’t try to pay with a higher amount than the ticket price – the driver is not allowed to accept it.

There are many ticket inspectors on the routes and – sadly – tourists often end up receiving hefty fines because they are not sure what they need to do. To avoid a fine, make sure you buy a ticket in advance or as soon as you get on the bus (if you haven’t been able to buy one beforehand) and that you validate it. To do this, you need to punch it in the validation machine. You only need to do this once – not every time you change a bus or tram. If your ticket is within its time period, it can be used for multiple rides.

TIP: If you get the Krakow Card , you can travel on buses and trams without having to worry about the tickets.

10. Save Money on Airport Transfers & More

If you plan to travel by taxi to and from the airport, book your airport transfer online – it’s cheaper than hailing a taxi from the rank. Always check the price before you travel. While it’s rare, tourists do occasionally fall prey to unscrupulous drivers who charge more than the going rate. Prices should be on display inside the taxi, on the passenger door or window.

Or consider other taxi alternatives such as iCar (local taxi service) or Uber, which operates around Krakow but is not available in the Old Town.

A fun and cost-effective way to get around is to use an electric scooter or bike. You can rent scooters and there are various locations around the city at which you can rent bikes. Sadly, however, Krakow’s popular bike-sharing service Wavelo was discontinued at the end of 2019.

11. Think Twice Before Hiring a Car

While renting a car gives you freedom, I wouldn’t recommend doing it for a visit to Krakow. Parking is hard to find and costly and the traffic can be very heavy. Some of the rules of the road can be very confusing, particularly with regard to ‘driving zones’ that even the locals find hard to understand.

If you decide to drive, be very careful to keep to posted speed limits. Speed restrictions are strictly enforced.

I’d only recommend renting a car in Krakow if you are staying in the area for longer than 3 days and are planning to explore the wide surroundings beyond the city. The most popular day trips to Auschwitz , Wieliczka Salt Mine , and Zakopane can easily be done with tours or private drivers .

12. Experience Polish Cuisine & Street Food

The Poles are rightly proud of their cuisine and you’ll find traditional food available at every turn. Be sure to try pierogis – plump little dumplings filled with a variety of ingredients, then baked or fried. You should also sample zurek – sour rye soup – and the classic borscht , a soup made from beetroot.

The food in Krakow extends far beyond traditional fare. Foodies will love the variety of high quality, gourmet meals on offer at restaurants throughout the city. Prices are very low and it’s possible to dine out very well in Poland for less than $40 a day!

If you’re traveling on a budget, then you can save money by taking advantage of Krakow’s delicious street food. You’ll find Polish bagels known as obwarzanki for sale on just about every corner. And as popular as these bagels are, I don’t think you can beat a loaf of regular Polish bread , fresh from the bakery! Be sure to also sample zapiekanka – Poland’s delicious and filling version of pizza!

TIP: Although it’s tempting to dine at restaurants in Market Square, I recommend doing a little exploring. Restaurants away from the main square are often cheaper and the standard of the food is often higher. Many lovely restaurants and cafes are almost hidden in the inner courtyards of the buildings, so don’t be afraid to stray from the beaten track.

Or you can also join a food tour and discover some of the best places and delicacies with a local guide. Also here, if you take a tour at the beginning of your trip, you can then take advantage of what you learned during the rest of your stay.

13. Tipping Etiquette

At restaurants in Poland, it’s customary to tip 10% if you find the service to be satisfactory. If the service is excellent, you can tip a bit more.

If you pay by credit card, it’s best to leave tips in cash. If you pay in cash and expect to get some change, don’t say ‘thank you’ when handing the money or it might be misunderstood that you’re ok with your waiter keeping the change. So wait to say ‘thanks’ till you have settled the money matters.

It’s not customary to tip at cafés or bars , but you can round up the bill. You can round up your taxi bill as well.

It’s customary to tip your tour guide at 10-15%, but only if you thoroughly enjoyed the service.

Tips are not expected by the hotel personnel or other similar services.

14. Don’t Drink in Public

You should know that it’s illegal to drink alcohol in public places in Poland. So make sure to not drink alcohol in public areas, including parks.

This also counts for celebrations like New Year or similar. There are no exceptions.

Outdoor cafés and restaurant terraces are, of course, ok.

15. Don’t Forget Little Important Details

• Some restrooms display symbols on the doors instead of words, which can be confusing! A restroom with a triangle is for men – a restroom with a circle is for women.
• Krakow is filled with cobbled streets and many hotels, restaurants and other buildings have no lifts. This is something to keep in mind if you are a disabled traveler or if traveling with young kids in a stroller. Make sure to also wear comfortable shoes as you’ll be walking a lot!
• The Polish electricity supply is 230V, 50Hz AC and the plug sockets type C/E just as in the rest of continental Europe. Visitors from the US and the UK will need to use an adapter. While these are available at shops and hotels in Krakow, the cheaper option is to buy one at home before you leave. • Krakow’s tap water is safe to drink, so there is no need to buy bottled water. If you are traveling in summer, you may want to bring a reusable water bottle.
• Try to buy your souvenirs away from the main Market Square. You will often find the same goods on sale elsewhere but at a cheaper price.
• Krakow often makes the list of the world’s top 20 safe destinations. Nevertheless, use the same safety precautions that you would use anywhere when traveling.
• Local pharmacies may not sell medications that you are used to using, so stock up before you travel.
• Krakow can be very cold in the winter and very hot in the summer, so be prepared with the right clothes . Bear in mind that it can also be very chilly in spring.

Hi Jurga, If you want to explore Poland a bit more, here are some of my suggestions where to go: south Poland -Zakopane and Tatra mountains, Krynica Gorska, Pieniny mountains near Krakow - Ojcow Park, nice for strolling north Poland - Gdansk north-central Poland - Biskupin (Bronze Age settlement) Warszawa is not my favorite , but the old town, Lazienki Park, and Wilanow Palace are beautiful.

Heading to Krakow anytime soon? Here are the best places to go in Krakow, Poland.

One of my top places in Krakow is Kazimierz, located in the heart of Poland. It emerges as a captivating destination: weaving together a bit of history, culinary delights and vibrant street art. Furthermore, this area is so much fun in any season! I always wander the streets aimlessly pointing my camera at little details. Stepping into this district is akin to entering a time capsule!

You can feel the history of Kazimierz as it is subtly etched into its street facades. One of the focal points of Kazimierz is the Old Synagogue , a venerable structure that stands as a testament to the district’s cultural heritage. Visitors are beckoned into its hallowed halls, where I swear you can feel the echoes of prayers and the whispers of centuries past reverberate off the walls.

I found myself at Judah Street Food Market , one of the many food markets in the area that serve up delectable treats. The market is a mosaic of flavors, each stall narrating a unique story through its dishes. Here you will find Pierogi, Zapiekanki, Chimney Cakes, and even Asian food. I settled on Zapiekanki as I hadn’t had this in forever. The Zapiekanki food truck offers a whole menu with different toppings. I went with the classic version!

This is a must-visit when in Krakow. Wawel is a historic complex enveloped in tales of regal grandeur and architectural splendor. I grabbed an audio guide from the ticket sales counter and headed inside. Equally important, you aren’t allowed to take pictures of the inside of the Cathedral. However, you can take pictures of the Poets Crypt and the Bell Tower . These structures were constructed over several centuries. The castle and cathedral both boast remarkable Gothic and Renaissance elements and are imbued with a rich history. Ticket prices for entry into this cultural haven reflect the invaluable opportunity to traverse through the annals of Polish royalty, revealing a nominal fee that opens the doors to a treasure trove of historical significance.

At the heart of Wawel Cathedral, Sigismund’s Bell stands as a resounding symbol of the past. Cast in 1520, the bell bears intricate decorative motifs and inscriptions, narrating the story of its creation and the reign of King Sigismund I. Wawel serves as both an auditory and visual testament to the craftsmanship of its time, captivating those who dare to climb up narrow and uneven stairs. Once up to the top, there were beautiful views of the city!

The interiors of Wawel Cathedral offer a captivating journey through the artistic legacy of the region. Orthodox paintings, with their passive allure, adorn the sacred walls, depicting biblical scenes and saints in vibrant hues. Each painting tells a story. Each altar is a view into the past. Intricacies of the Cathedral’s history are unveiled as one explores the various chapels, crypts, and royal tombs within. The sepulchral grandeur of the Cathedral becomes a gateway to the historical continuum, linking past and present in an architectural embrace.

Since 1915, Podgórze been an important district of Krakow. This district is just south of Old Town Krakow and very easy to get to from Kazimierz. I chose to walk over Bernatka Bridge to get to Podgórze. This provided a beautiful view of the river. On a warm sunny day, this would have been a perfect walk. I recommend to grab a Bolt (or other taxi/car service) during the winter.

Podgórze district played an important role in trade to Hungary and Ruthenia salt transports. After the first partition of Poland in the 18th Century, the Vistula River became the state’s border. Podgórze fell to Austria! This was a period of dynamic development for Podgórze. The young city could be not only a competitor but also a partner for Krakow. Around the 20th century, Krakow was becoming a bustling city and needed to expand, and In 1915, Podgórze became part of Kraków. In the spring of 1941, the Nazis created a ghetto – a closed, walled district intended for people of Jewish origin.

Nowa Huta, located in Kraków, Poland, is a district with a rich history shaped by its industrial past. Established in the aftermath of World War II, Nowa Huta was envisioned as a socialist ideal city. The centerpiece of the district is the monumental Central Square , surrounded by large, identical residential buildings, embodying the principles of socialist architecture and urban planning.

First Air Arabia flight lands in Krakow, Poland

Air Arabia marked the inauguration of its first flight to Kraków in Poland connecting Sharjah International Airport and Kraków John Paul II International Airport with a frequency of daily flights.

An inaugural ceremony was held at Sharjah Airport prior to departure and was attended by Jakub Slawek, Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to the United Arab Emirates along with senior representatives from Air Arabia and Sharjah International Airport. Krakow's market square, Rynek Glowny, is Europe's largest medieval square and well worth a look. Among the must-sees of the city, we can also mention the Wawel Castle, a magnificent historical complex that overlooks the bank of the Vistula River.

Krakow is a city that was strongly marked by the Second World War. Podgórze and Kazimierz are two neighborhoods known for their Jewish heritage. Notably, they house the Museum of the History of Polish Jews.
