Vrindavan Detailed Travel Guide | To-Do List, History, Darshan, Mandir, Weather, How to Reach, Hotels, Festivals, Radha Krishna Stories

M any people often have a deep desire to visit Vrindavan and at some point in life plan to visit Vrindavan once.

They have a conception that Vrindavan would be like forests and untouched with modernisation. Contrary to the notion what people have in their mind, externally Vrindavan has undergone a rapid level of infrastructural progress and is home to many high rise apartments, superstores, pizza outlets and grand marble temples with a high footfall of domestic as well as international tourists and pilgrims daily.

However, a lot of old temples in and around Loi Bazar retain that vintage and traditional Vrindavan feel.

In this exhaustive Vrindavan Travel Guide , I will guide you with all the details you need to plan a Vrindavan trip in such a way that you take back some great memories with yourself apart from gaining spiritually and being coloured in Vraja Prema Bhakti whenever you plan to visit here.

History & Story

Vrindavan is the abode of the love of Srimati Radharani and Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

The story and lilas of Krishna are known to all, but only in parts and pieces to the majority of masses. I will connect it on basic terms for people who are unaware.

So, as most of you might be knowing, Krishna was born in Mathura and from there, Vasudev Ji (his father) crossed the Yamuna and left the baby Krishna at his friend Nanda Baba's home in Gokul. Krishna was lovingly raised by Nanda Baba and Yashoda Maiya. When He became a bit grown up, He directed the information to Kans that it is nobody other than Him who is destined to kill Kans.

The book 'Demystifying The Mystical Vrindavan' is the essence and crux of this entire website.

If you are considering to dive into the final goal of our Vedic Scriptures and spiritual life, and if Radharani inspires you, do get a copy of the book .

Upon hearing this, evil Kans burned the entire village of Gokul in a hope to burn Krishna, and eventually kill his death. Krishna has already made His plans, and before the army of Kans were about to burn Gokul, Krishna convinced Nanda Baba to go and take shelter at Vrishbanu Baba's village Barsana. It was all a pastime of Krishna to spend time with Srimati Radharani in Barsana and perform His divine lila's to teach the world prema-bhakti and reclaim the conditioned souls to go back home, back to godhead Goloka Vrindavan.

From there, Vrishabhanu Baba gifted the Gokulvasis the holy land of Vrindavan, which became the place where Radharani and Krishna perform the nitya transcendental lilas. Vrindavan attracts all sincere seekers and colours them with the inner confidential love of prema-bhakti that is extremely rare and not even accessible to yogis, siddha saints, tapasvis and even demi-gods like Shiva Ji and Brahma Ji.

In this age of Kali, the confidential aspects of vraja-prema rasa can be easily understood by chanting Hare Krishna Mahamantra loudly with full engagement, exactly how a child cries for his mother. While chanting the holy names, cry loudly to Srimati Radharani and Krishna for direction to the most confidential aspect of vraja prema-bhakti .

When is the best time to come to Vrindavan?

The very day this thought comes to your mind . Franky, not everybody can come to Vrindavan even if planning for long. I have experienced it first hand and the same with so many friends around me. Sometimes, the train gets cancelled, sometimes the way to airport route is abuzz with heavy traffic and you miss your flight, sometimes last-minute work cancels the plan, and sometimes you come till Mathura but are unable to visit Vrindavan.

And however weird or funny it may sound, all of a sudden you wake up one day and feel inspired to go to Vrindavan and you just take the next train, bus or simply begin driving to Vrindavan impromptu. So, the day you feel deeply inspired to come to Vrindavan, simply leave all the work and begin your journey to the most confidential abode of the love of Srimati Radharani and Sri Krishna, Sri Vrindavan Dham.

 • It is said in Samudra Shastra that anybody who does penance and tapasya for thousands of lifetimes gets the chance to take a step in Vrindavan. Srila Rupa Goswami mentions in Mathura Mahatmya that with just a step in Vrindavan, the sins accumulated in thousands of lifetimes is destroyed within a second.
 • There are so many scriptures glorifying the exalted position of Vrindavan (which as stated in these scriptures itself, is very difficult for even them to glorify it properly).

Though, Janmashtami, Radhamastmi, Holi and Kartik (Damodar) Mas are extremely visited times of the year by devotees from all over the world. (Further details below)

 • The most preferred mode of commute in Vrindavan is e-rickshaws . They are cheap, eco-friendly and zoom in any small lanes of Vraj quickly . They will charge around 10-40 rupees unless very far.
 • Do not give them any amount above 60-70 bucks for any place as once they sense that you are coming for the first time, they will quote big astronomical amounts.
 • Also, many devotees prefer to walk as all the major and popular temples like ISKCON, Prem Mandir, Radha Damodar, Radha Shyamsundar, Nidhivan, Meerabai Temple, Radha Raman, Gopeshwar Mahadev, Radha Madan Mohan, Radha Govinda etc. are located in around 2 km radius .

Bike for rent in Vrindavan

If you are just a couple of people, or in multiples of 2, you can rent a bike from Srila Prabhupada Emporium at Hare Krishna Residency, just near to the Bonraj Maharaj College and on the adjacent side of Main Gate of ISKCON Temple. They will take a security deposit of 1000 rupees, and will charge 500 rupees for Activa scooter and bikes. The advantage you will get is that you can go to any place around Vrindavan easily. Also, you can quickly visit Mathura, Barsana, Govardhan, Radha Kund easily. If you are good with using Google Maps, I would highly advise you to rent a bike or scooter to have a further great experience.

Though, please note that there are some instances of bike theft in Vrindavan, hence make sure that you park it securely or at parking only. Don't leave the bike at any random place for a longer period of time.

Must-do activities in Vrindavan

I would highly suggest any devotee or tourist coming to Vrindavan to make sure to participate in the below mentioned devotional activities.

Though every step in Vrindavan destroys sins of thousands of lifetimes and also bestows the result of 100 Ashwamedha Yagyas, what Rasika Vaishnavas teach is to be a seeker of vraja-prema bhakti .

As repeated by exalted saints and scriptures every now and then, in this age of Kali Yuga, vraja prema bhakti can easily be understood by following point number 2 below. Do try to experience the below-mentioned points and take back some wonderful memories with yourself when you come for Vrindavan trip.

Yamuna Boat Ride

Visit Kesi Ghat and take a boat ride. There are many boats there and they usually charge an arbitrary amount once they get a feel that you are a tourist so do not forget to negotiate with them. The ideal price would be 150 or 200 bucks for a 20-30 minute ride duration. It is a wonderful experience to witness the ghat from the waters of Yamuna Maharani as Keshi Ghat retains that traditional vintage vibe. If possible, do take Yamuna Snan or take achman if you are unable to take snan (bath).

Kirtan at ISKCON

There is a fully charged up enthusiastic kirtan at ISKCON Krishna Balarama Mandir 24 hours a day. It has been going on since 1986. It was re-established by Sripad Aindra Prabhu . You just step inside the temple hall and automatically get engaged in the Harinam Sankirtana. This is the final conclusion of all Vedic Scriptures. Harer Nama Eva Kevalam i.e. in Kali Yuga, there is nothing except Harinam for the deliverance of fallen conditioned souls.

Banke Bihari Darshan

The darshan at Banke Bihari Mandir is a tad different as the curtain opens and closes every alternate 10-30 seconds. The deities of Banke Bihari Ji just create a powerful impression on the viewer. You will witness a different experience here.

Yamuna Arti

Evening arti at Keshi Ghat on banks of Yamuna Maharani is flocked by devotees worldwide. There is a grand arti and you just get engaged in the festivities there. It starts at 5.30 and sometimes at 6 PM. Though, be careful not to wear spectacles there as monkeys can snatch it very easily. Also, be aware not to speak to anyone local or dicey here and do keep your mobile and wallet safe.

Chant Hare Krishna Mahamantra internally

While in Vrindavan, keep chanting Hare Krishna Hare Krishna | Krishna Krishna Hare Hare | Hare Rama Hare Rama | Rama Rama Hare Hare on your lips. You can get a bead and bead bag for 50-100 rupees anywhere in Vrindavan and keep chanting here. Krishna and Srimati Radharani become pleased with anybody who chants the holy names. Taking 1 nama (name) of Krishna in Vrindavan gives the result of taking Krishna's name 1000 times. Hence, try to keep chanting Hare Krishna Mahamantra when you are here (It would be nice if you can start if from the moment you read this from anywhere in the world). Chanting Hare Krishna maha-mantra manifests everything from within and gives you direction at every juncture of life about the very purpose of life itself.

Put Vraj Soil on head

Don't understand anything but really are seeking answers on what is so confidential about Vrindavan? Just put some Vraj mitti (soil) on the head while you are here and pray to the holy land of Vrindavan to give you direction. You would be surprised by how quickly our merciful Sri Vrindavan Dham guides you.

One must make it a point to come to Vrindavan every Kartik regardless of anything. it bestows thousands of times spiritual credits and sincere seekers really get direction and answers quickly in the quest of vraja-prema bhakti .

Shri Radha Raman Mandir

Sri Radha Raman Mandir is one of the 7 temples dedicated to the Thakur of Vrindavan. The temple was built in 1542 at the request of Sri Gopal Bhatta. It is believed that the idol in this temple is created from Shilpgram Shila by itself. Once Gopal Bhatta visited Nepal and dipped in the Kali-Gandaki River. There he found 12 Shilpgram Shila and brought them to Vrindavan. Gopal Bhatta used to worship all the Shilpgram Shila but one day after returning from the Yamuna River taking bath he found that there are only 11 Shilpgram Shila with the beautiful three-fold bending form of tri-bhangananda Sri Krishna playing flute among them. Thus the deity of the Radha Raman was created from the Shilpgram Shila.

Vrindavan (Hindi: वृंदावन Vr̥ndāvan ), also spelled Brindavan , is a holy town at the banks of the Yamuna River, in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh .

Understand [ edit ]

vrindavan trip guide

Vrindavan ( vrihn-duh-vuhn ) stands on the original forest of Vrindavana where the Hindu god Krishna spent his childhood, on the banks of the Yamuna River. Numerous events are documented to have occurred here: this is where Krishna did the divine dance with Gopis ( Maharaas ), spread the message of divine love with his lover Radha, stole the clothes of the bathing maidens ( gopis ) who prayed for attaining him, and destroyed an entire succession of demons. Consequently, it is a major pilgrimage destination for Hindus, and features by some counts as many as 5000 temples.

It is believed that the essence of Vrindavan was lost over time until the 16th century, when it was rediscovered by Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. In the year 1515, Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu visited Vrindavan, with purpose of locating the lost holy places associated with Lord Sri Krishna's transcendent pastimes. Lord Chaitanya wandered through the different sacred forests of Vrindavan in a spiritual trance of divine love. By His divine spiritual power, He was able locate all the important places of Krishna's pastimes in and around Vrindavan.

According to Vaishnavites and particularly Krishna devotees, Vrindavan on Earth is a manifestation of the original Goloka Vrindavan Dham of Lord Krishna. Rather than visiting Vrindavana as any other tourist spot, this place is best enjoyed when visited with the thoughts of Sri Krishna alone and when remembering him at every foot length of land. It will not be too inaccurate to say that all the great Hindu saints have visited Vrindavana in their lifetime atleast once. Even now most localites here always chant the names of Radha and Krishna during their day to day activities. This place is still being visited by devotees from different parts of India who are very spiritual and attracted to Lord Krishna.

Vrindavan is also known as the Shelter City for Widows. By Hindu tradition, widows may not remarry but spend life towards spiritual liberation, and many of those abandon their families or having abandoned by their families on the death of their husband make their way here. In exchange for singing bhajan hymns for 7-8 hours in bhajanashrams , they are given a meal and a little money (around ₹10-₹20). This enables chanting of the Lord's name and also feeding of widows who have no other means of survival. Some of them also beg on the streets. However, some of the trusts that operate the ashrams are regularly accused of skimming off vast amounts from the donations. There are an estimated 20,000 widows, some of whom are very old having spent over 30 years there.

Vrindavan is about 150 km south of Delhi . The nearest train station is Vrindavan's twin holy town Mathura , 12 km (20 min) away by rickshaw. A one-way ticket from Vrindavan's train station costs from ₹100.

Vrindavan is about 50 km from Agra , which hosts the Taj Mahal. It lies on the tourist Golden Triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur.

Get around [ edit ]

The core of Vrindavan is congested as it is an ancient town with thin lanes. The best way to get around is on foot or cycle rickshaw. A cycle rickshaw ride from ISKCON Krishna Balaram temple to the Banke Bihari temple or similar distances would cost you ₹20 per person.

Signage in English is non-existent, so you'll either need to ask for directions constantly or, an easier choice, hire a guide to show you around. Your rickshaw driver will be more than happy to find you one, but do beware of temple scams (see #Stay safe ).

 • The Brahmotsava Festival , held for ten days after Holi (February/March), is the largest in Vrindavan and can draw up to 100,000 visitors. On the main day, known as Ratha Ka Mela , a giant wooden chariot is pulled by devotees from the Rangji temple to its gardens and back.
 • Nidhi Van ( Nidhuban, Nidhuvan ). Krishna rested with His beloved Sri Radha. The shrine inside has a bed, which is decorated with flowers by the priest every evening. No one is allowed to stay inside after dusk because according to popular belief the Lord visits the spot with Sri Radha. The samadhi (memorial) of Svami Hari Das is also within this complex. All the groves of Vrindavan are notorious for monkeys that have a special fascination for cameras and spectacles. The Yamuna river flows through Vrindavan and Mathura. It is one of the most sacred rivers in India as it is so intimately connected with Krishna's pastimes.
 • Parikrama is about a three-hour / 6-km walk around the city performed by Hindu pilgrims on the parikrama path that circles the city. Best to start early in the morning at the ISKCON Mandir.

Stay safe [ edit ]

Like all Hindu holy towns, the chaos and squalor of Vrindavan can get pretty intense.

If you take a guided tour, you can expect to be led to a temple where the priest will treat you to a simple ceremony and then start demanding donations of thousands of rupees to carve your name on a marble plaque that will supposedly go up on the wall. A few tens of rupees for dabs of kumkum on your forehead etc are reasonable, but there is absolutely no reason to pay more: simply walk out if you feel uncomfortable. The easiest way to avoid getting into this situation in the first place is to insist on going to temples of your choice, not the guide's.

Vrindavan is absolutely infested with monkeys , who are adept at stealing cameras, glasses (in certain areas some are trained to come up behind you and whip off your glasses, then there are boys who ask for money to get them back by offering food to them), food and anything you're not keeping a close eye on. Wear contacts or go without if you can.

Places to visit

Since the places of interest are not that far from each other, you can cover the attractions in just a day. But if you have time to spare, do it at your own pace. The best places to visit in Vrindavan will be Seva Kunj and Nidhuban, Shahji Temple, Govardhan Hill, and Banke Bihari Temple. Some of the must-visit places in Mathura are Krishna Janma Bhoomi Mandir, Kusum Sarovar, Prem Mandir, Jama Masjid, and Dwarkadhish Temple.

Things to do

Mathura and Vrindavan attract hordes of devotees and curious travellers every year. When you are on a trip to these ancient cities, try to indulge in various exciting things that you will be able to experience only in Mathura and Vrindavan, besides exploring the temples. When you are in Mathura, capture the beauty of diyas floating and illuminating the Yamuna River, or go swimming in the Kusum Sarovar, which is believed to be the meeting point of Radha Krishna. Then, you can enjoy a visit to the Mathura Government Museum, Jama Masjid, and Kans Quila if you are curious to know about the past and history.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Mathura and Vrindavan is between the months of October and February. During this time of the year, the weather here is pleasant, while the region experiences extreme weather with temperatures swelling up to 40 degree Celsius the rest of the year.

Where to stay?

Finding accommodation here shouldn’t be a task. You can find a lot of hotels, homestays, and even dharamshalas to spend your days, both in Vrindavan and Mathura. Note that since temples are prime attractions here, you will easily find accommodation options near those areas, and they are decent places to stay.

Should I have a complete vehicle inspection in anticipation of a road trip? | Car Doctor

Q: i have a 2012 nissan pathfinder with 200,000 miles. it has been well maintained and has not required any major repairs other than some work on the rear suspension framework. should i have a complete vehicle inspection in anticipation of a road trip is there anything in particular that i should be concerned about, given the age and mileage of this vehicle.

A: Check all the fluids, get an oil change, and give the drive belts and coolant hoses a good look along with the radiator. Also, the tires should be checked for possible damage from winter potholes. Then take a look at lights and wipers – there's nothing more annoying than a road trip with streaky wiper.

An emergency kit, spare tire, jack lug wrench, wheel lock key (if needed) some basic tools, portable jump-pack, air compressor, flares/reflector, flashlight, gloves and a cellphone charger are all handy to have.

Is my frequent oil change strategy a good idea or overkill?

Q: I have a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado Crew Cab with a 3.0 Duramax Diesel. I have routinely changed the oil every 5,000 miles even though the manual calls for changing the oil at the 7,500 mark or as shown on the oil monitor system. Is the 5,000-mile change overkill?

Also, when I get a new vehicle, I change oil at the 1,000 mile mark, based on recommendations from friends that there is more wear and tear with the new engine during the first 1,000 miles. Is this overkill?

A: At one time, people changed their engine oil in as little as the first 500 miles to remove any assembly material. Today's engines – due to assembly techniques – are much cleaner. In fact, changing the oil early will sometimes not allow the rings to seat properly.

As for periodic oil changes: changing the oil every 7,500 miles will maintain the warranty, but every 5,000 miles certainly can’t hurt.

Gas with high ethanol caused problems with Honda generator

Q: I live in Florida, and I recently needed to use my Honda generator. It would not stay running. I took it to a local shop, and they told me the issue was I was using fuel with a high ethanol content. They drained the fuel and all seems good now. How could that happen? Is the gas station responsible for the problem?

A: It is possible that there was some cross contamination at the station and E85 (85% ethanol) ended up in the wrong tank. But what could also have happened is – depending on the gas station – if the station pumps don’t have a dedicated E85 pump and you were only filling a small gas can, the residual E85 in the hose (could be up to half a gallon) mixed with and contaminated the regular fuel. I usually fill my gas can when I fill my car with gas, but I do it after I refuel my car. This way there is no chance that the gas can will have anything other than regular (low ethanol) fuel.

How do the gas engine and batteries work together in Honda hybrid?

Q: I have a 2022 Honda CR-V Hybrid and am hoping that you can explain two things about it. First, I don't understand how the gasoline engine and the batteries work together. Second, there's a button to put it into EV mode, but then it only goes at most a mile, so what's the benefit of that option?

A: This hybrid system uses the gasoline engine for three distinct purposes: to power the generator to supply electricity for the drive motor; to flow power directly to the front wheels to move the vehicle; and to charge the hybrid battery pack.

The electric motor also provides instant torque at zero RPM and allows for seamless operation of the idle start/stop system. The EV-only mode is designed to operate for short distances for speeds generally no higher than 30 miles per hour.

To me, the EV mode is more of a novelty than a useful function. Under the normal hybrid mode, the gasoline engine and electric motor work together to maximize both engine performance and economy.

What is causing lights to flutter on Chevy truck?

Q: My 10-year-old Chevy truck has an issue with all the lights fluttering. They go slightly from normal to brighter to slightly dimmer. It is noticeable, but just barely. So far, I have cleaned all the battery connections and even the battery cable where it attaches to the body, but nothing changed. What could be wrong?

A: I suspect that the alternator is faulty. You can test this with a digital multimeter. In this case you want to set your meter to read AC volts. Take your measurements at the battery while the engine is warmed up with the headlights and defroster turned on to put a load on the electrical system.

When performing the test, If there is more than 0.1-0.5 volts of AC ripple, then the alternator is most likely faulty and should be replaced.

The great outdoors are closer than you think. How to find hiking, camping, more near you.

vrindavan trip guide

There are more federal lands and waters than you can explore in a lifetime.

And there’s a free tool to help find the best ones for you. Recreation.gov is a one-stop shop for planning adventures in the great outdoors.

“Our job with Recreation.gov is to set people out to have the best experience they can, and when they know what to expect, they know how to prepare, they know what passes they might need, if their entry fees, if they need time, reservations, anything like that,” said Janelle Smith, who works for the U.S. Forest Service and Recreation.gov Public Affairs.

Here’s how to use the site to plan your next getaway or level up your next road trip .

Is Recreation.gov a real website?

Yes. Fourteen federal agencies , ranging from the National Park Service to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, use Recreation.gov as a “centralized travel planning and reservation platform,” according to the website.

“All of our federal agencies that participate in Recreation.gov share their data with us, even if it's not a reservable location,” said Smith. Travelers can use that data to find points of interest across the country. “Today, there are about 5,000 recreation areas and 121,000 individual sites available to reserve on Recreation.gov .”

Where is a good place to camp?

To find highly rated campgrounds near you, use the map tool in the middle of the homepage or select the Camping & Lodging thumbnail near the top. Either can help you search Recreation.gov’s database of campgrounds and other accommodations, which you can narrow by rating as well as distance, price, availability, and even mobile coverage. You can click on each location to find additional details like rules, activities and nearby attractions.

You’ll need to create an account on the website to make a reservation.

“There's many reasons for that, the most important being those local managers, who manage the locations where you're going to visit, need to be able to communicate with you for things like maybe a fire emergency or flooding or anything that could impact your stay,” Smith explained.

How do I plan where to stop on a road trip?

Recreation.gov's Trip Builder can help you find all sorts of scenic places to stop, whether for a picnic or a full park day.

From the homepage, click on Plan Your Vacation with Trip Builder. From there, you can enter a starting point and destination and filter what you’d like to do along the way. Do you want to go hiking or snorkeling? Are you interested in historical and cultural sites or simply driving around and looking at scenery? You can indicate how far out of the way you’re willing to go for these destinations.

“I can set this buffer zone right here to, say, 50 miles outside of my route,” Smith said. “It will show me then all of the different recreation opportunities along that route … that I wouldn't have known about otherwise just driving along the road.”

From Acadia to Zion: What travelers should know about each of America's national parks

Can you just show up to a national park?

Sometimes. Most national parks do not require reservations for entry. Of those that do, most only require reservations for certain areas, during certain times, like summit sunrises at Haleakalā National Park in Hawaii.

Some may require reservations or fees for specific activities, like cave tours at Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky. Others may require activity permits or lotteries, like hiking Angels Landing at Zion National Park in Utah.

“If a location requires a permit, it's typically a location that is extremely popular and the demand is greater than the capacity of that experience,” Smith said. She encourages travelers to consider less visited destinations.

“All the participating agencies of Recreation.gov, beyond the big national parks, have hundreds and thousands of amazing locations that people may not know about,” Smith said. “By venturing out just beyond sort of the known areas, I think you can discover parts of this country that are really surprising, and they have so much to offer.”

First timer’s guide to California's Santa Barbara

Apr 17, 2024 • 8 min read

vrindavan trip guide

Welcome to Santa Barbara , where the sun, sea, and mountains create a coastal paradise like no other. The Chumash people initially inhabited the town for thousands of years before Spanish explorers arrived in the 16th century. Today, Santa Barbara still reflects its Spanish colonial heritage with Mediterranean-style buildings and red-tile roofs, which perfectly complement the natural backdrop of the San Ynez Mountains.

What may appear as a small beach town truly has so much to offer. From its pristine beaches, one-of-a-kind hiking trails, vibrant culture, mouthwatering eateries, live music scene, renowned vineyards, and plenty more… there won’t be a minute to spare.

Just 90 minutes from Los Angeles , whether visiting for just the day or a long weekend, it’s a no-brainer. So whether you’re looking to catch the perfect wave or want to indulge in a world of laid-back tranquility, the magic of Santa Barbara offers what can only be referred to as a diverse array of experiences that cater to every taste and interest.

When is the best time to go to Santa Barbara?

Santa Barbara bathes in near-perfect weather, averaging more than 300 days of sunshine each year, so there’s really no bad time to visit. For travelers looking for that quintessential Californian experience, July and August are when the sun is at its hottest and the water is warmest. While the warmer season does bring larger crowds and higher prices, consider planning your trip around Santa Barbra’s Old Spanish Days Fiesta. The city truly comes alive during the five-day festival that honors Santa Barbara’s history, spirit, culture, heritage and traditions. The celebrations begin on the Wednesday before the first Friday in August, and 2024 will mark its 100th anniversary.

Budget-conscious travelers may find winter (December to February) more appealing, with fewer tourists and a better chance of snagging a great deal on accommodation. But the sweet spot lies in spring and fall when the crowds thin out while temperatures are still on the higher side. Just be sure to pack layers as the temperatures can drop up to 15 degrees at night.

How much time should I spend in Santa Barbara?

Santa Barbara can be enjoyed as an easy day or weekend trip from Los Angeles (travel time is only 90 minutes). However, with so much to do and see, true explorers will relish the opportunity to linger for three to four days (and many lodging properties offer guests their third night free).

If you only have two days, you can soak up the city’s Spanish heritage and enjoy the palm-lined waterfront and coastal cuisine. However, with a few more days up your sleeve, you can indulge beyond the city’s immediate offerings. For starters, Santa Barbara’s wine tastings are a must . There’s a series of 25+ rooms downtown, but if you can venture out to Santa Barbara’s wine country, it’s home to 283 wineries. With more days, outdoor adventures like hiking and cycling are also possible and cater to all levels and expertise.

Is it easy to get in and around Santa Barbara?

The options are plenty when it comes to getting in and around Santa Barbara. A direct flight to Santa Barbara Municipal Airport (SBA) is an option with flights from all around the US, including Portland, Salt Lake City, and even Atlanta. From there, a ride-share service or hotel shuttle can transport you the 10 miles to downtown.

Getting to Santa Barbara from Los Angeles is an easy 90-minute drive on US 101-N. Alternatively, tourists can opt for the Amtrak train. The gorgeous coastal ride starts from Union Station in Los Angeles and takes just over two-and-a-half hours to arrive directly in downtown Santa Barbara.

Once in Santa Barbara, the compact city center means you can ditch your car for the most part. The downtown coastal area is very pedestrian and cyclist-friendly, making it easy to explore the charming streets of boutiques, cafes, and galleries without the added stress of finding (limited) parking. However, if you plan to visit beyond downtown, a car or rideshare option will be necessary.

Top things to do in Santa Barbara

There’s so much to pack in during your time in Santa Barbara, but there are a few must-dos that showcase the city. Renting a bike is the best way to see as many spots as possible. Make sure you cruise along the scenic Cabrillo Bike Path, which offers breathtaking views of the coastline and the Santa Ynez Mountains.

Foodies and wine enthusiasts will feel right at home with the near-limitless gastronomic offerings. For a casual-yet-upscale coffee, Cajé Coffee Roasters are known for their very photogenic drinks (order the Sugar Wood or Belarosa). For lunch, it’s almost criminal for a first-timer to skip La Super-Rica Taqueria . After one bite, you’ll quickly learn why Julia Child and Katy Perry call this their favorite taco joint. Bibi Ji is another local go-to for their friendly atmosphere and delicious twist on modern Indian cuisine.

Even if you’re not planning on venturing past downtown, it doesn’t mean you’ll miss out on a famous Santa Barbara wine tasting . Just steps from the main State Street, Grassini Family Vineyards has a tasting room. For just $25, you can try their Estate Flight, which features four of their estate-grown wines, or you can purchase a glass or bottle to enjoy.

Taking the time to stop and enjoy the serenity is a huge part of what attracts so many people to Santa Barbra. For a budget-friendly option, pack a casual picnic and bask in the sunshine, beauty, and tranquility of the Santa Barbara Botanic Gardens . Tucked away in the foothills of the Santa Ynez Mountains, the enchanting oasis showcases California’s diverse flora.

Rows of lush green vineyard grapvines with a majestic oak tree in the distance.

Leave time for a day trip from Santa Barbara

There are several day trip options from Santa Barbara, including visiting nearby wine regions such as the Santa Ynez Valley . Beyond wine tastings, the Santa Ynez Valley is also known for its horseback riding. A popular place to visit is the Alisal Ranch , located on 10,500 sweeping acres, with 100 horses trained for riders who are beginners having their first lesson, to an expert wanting an exhilirating trail ride.

Another great spot is Monetcito – another coastal town only a 10 minute drive with boutique shopping and sprawling estates. If you’re lucky, you may even bump into Oprah Winfrey, Prince Harry, Ellen DeGeneres or plenty of other celebrities who call this area home.

Venturing out a little further, take a scenic drive along the Pacific Coast Highway to destinations like Malibu or Big Sur , or visit other popular day trip destinations like Solvang , Ojai or Channel Islands National Park .

My favorite thing to do in Santa Barbara

Picking just one favorite activity is nearly impossible with all that Santa Barbara has to offer. But if I did have to recommend just one activity, I’d say you cannot miss an evening show at the Santa Barbara Bowl .

The spectacular amphitheater was built in 1936 and seats over 4,500 people. Of course, the performances are showstopping, but the true magic happens before the show. Located approximately 300 feet above sea level, as the sun starts its descent behind the hills, the sky transforms into a breathtaking canvas of fiery hues. It’s a scene that captures Santa Barbara’s rich natural beauty, and the magical sunsets become forever intertwined with the unforgettable experience of the live show.

How much money do I need to visit Santa Barbara?

Santa Barbara is considered to be a relatively expensive place to visit due to its popular coastal location and luxurious upscale amenities. However, there are options to suit various budgets.

 • Hostel room: $40–$65 per night (season dependent)
 • Basic room for two: $150–$350 per night (season dependent)
 • Self-catering apartment (including Airbnb): $140–$350+ per night (season dependent)
 • Public transport ticket: $1.75 for a single bus ride, or $4.50–$7 for a day pass
 • Coffee: $3–$6
 • Sandwich: $8–$15
 • Dinner for two: $30–$100+
 • Beer/pint at the bar: $5–$10
 • Wine tasting: $15–$30
 • City tour: $30–$100pp

What’s the nightlife like in Santa Barbara?

The nightlife scene in Santa Barbara is vibrant with trendy bars, restaurants, and lounges lining the main streets of downtown. Many feature live music performances to add to the lively atmosphere.

Is it easy to find parking in downtown Santa Barbara?

The short answer is: no. Parking in downtown Santa Barbara can be challenging, especially during high seasons. There are metered spots, but availability varies. Consider walking on foot or biking around to avoid parking hassles.

What should I pack for my trip to Santa Barbara?

Even during warmer months, the temperature in Santa Barbara drops significantly at night, so layers are always recommended. There are many options when it comes to activities, including beach outings, wine tastings, and outdoor expiration so pack a variety of clothing options. Everyday essentials for Santa Barbara include sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, and a water bottle to stay hydrated.

Are there any safety tips I should keep in mind?

Overall, Santa Barbara is considered a safe tourist destination, but it’s always wise to take precautions and be aware of new surroundings. Additionally, it’s important to be mindful of ocean conditions when swimming and enjoying other water activities. Always listen to lifeguards and local advice regardless of how confident you are in the water.

The first of the Florida Keys you'll hit after driving about an hour south from Miami en route from Key Largo to Key West is, well, Key Largo. Often referred to as the Dive Capital of the World, Key Largo includes one must-see stop: John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park (MM 102.5), the first underwater preserve in the United States.

Experienced and novice snorkelers and SCUBA divers will be enthralled by the teeming marine life that lives just below the water's surface, like parrot fish, barracudas and sea turtles. More experienced divers enjoy exploring the USS Spiegel Grove, one of the largest ships ever intentionally sunk to create an artificial reef where pretty fish can thrive.

Back on dry land, travelers can wander nearly six miles of trails at Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park, home to more than 80 species of plants and animals. You can also peruse the work of local artists at myriad galleries.

Best beach: Cannon Beach, found within John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, has shallow waters that are perfect for wading. You may even spot cannons and anchors on the beach that remain from a 1715 Spanish shipwreck.

Where to eat: Dig into the catch of the day at The Fish House, Key Largo Conch House or Snook's Bayside Restaurant & Grand Tiki Bar, some of the best traditional restaurants in the area. If you'd rather turf than surf, check out Jimmy Johnson's Big Chill.

Where to stay: If you can't get enough of the underwater world, stay at Jules' Undersea Lodge , the world's first underwater hotel. If you'd rather keep dry, try the adults-only Bungalows Key Largo .

Countless seasoned boat captains are ready for hire to take you out to catch the wahoo, marlin, mahi-mahi and tuna that swim in these waters.

There's an even quirkier way to interact with fish here: hand-feeding the tarpon off the docks of Robbie's Marina (MM 77.5). Feeding the fishies there is so popular, it's been named the No. 1 activity in all the Florida Keys.

Islamorada is also a terrific spot to kitesurf, stand-up paddleboard, go for a hike or take a bicycle ride.
