Singer-songwriter Stephen Fretwell returns: ‘I took a leap that cost me my marriage’
Riding high, the musician left music to concentrate on his young family. So what led him to sacrifice his marriage and resume his career 15 years later?
I n 2018, Stephen Fretwell was sitting in a class at the college where he had enrolled to do an A-level crammer course when a notification popped up on his phone. It was a link to a Pitchfork story about Arctic Monkeys recording a version of a track from his 2005 album Magpie. Fretwell watched in quiet astonishment as some of his classmates, almost half his age, opened the same news story on their phones and began openly discussing this unknown singer-songwriter that their favourite band had covered.
Fretwell stayed quiet. His new album, Busy Guy, is out this week but, at that point, he didn’t feel like much of a singer-songwriter at all. Magpie reached the Top 30 and he was called up to support Oasis, Elbow, Keane and others, but 2007’s Man on the Roof was followed by an extended period of musical inactivity. Years went by where he didn’t pick up a guitar, his life instead centred on being a stay-at-home dad to his two sons in Brighton. Fans wondered where he had gone, imagining some mythical rock’n’roll recluse. Not exactly: prior to redoing his A-levels with the intention of going to university and studying law, he was washing pots in his local Wetherspoons.
“When my kids were born, that changed everything,” says the amicable 39-year-old, sipping a pint at a cafe in London’s Regent’s Park on a sunny June afternoon. “I think it was assumed that I was being a bit difficult and enjoying the idea that I would be like a Searching for Sugarman -type character.” The truth is that Fretwell, who was diagnosed with ADHD two years ago, was uncertain if he could juggle being a new father and a songwriter at the same time. “I was safeguarding things that matter, because I knew I would get both things wrong,” he says. “And, with the children, there’s no way I’d have allowed myself to get that wrong.”
The news that Arctic Monkeys had covered Untitled wasn’t a surprise for Fretwell. He had found out a week before through his exasperated manager, who also represents the Sheffield band and had stuck with Fretwell throughout his dormant years. “He called me up and said: ‘What the hell are you doing, Stephen? Are you ever going to do some music again? Alex recorded one of your songs, imagine how many songs he could have chosen from on the planet?’”
Finally, something was sparked. Fretwell put his plans for a law degree to one side and got back in touch with his younger self, the driven lad from Scunthorpe who had a knack for turning mundane, everyday tales into delicate ballads. The sardonically titled Busy Guy is a beautifully stripped-down acoustic record that recaptures what made him special in the first place, now with added mid-life poignancy. It underlines his appeal to indie rock frontmen with a taste for poetic turns of phrase. As well as Alex Turner, for whom he has played bass in the Last Shadow Puppets, Fretwell also has devoted fans in Courteeners’ Liam Fray and Elbow’s Guy Garvey. James Corden was so enamoured with his music that he used one of his songs, Run, over the closing credits of Gavin & Stacey.
Fretwell’s artistic re-emergence has come at a price, however. “I realised I was gonna have to take a leap that would probably cost me my marriage,” he says. “And it did. I knew that if I was going to go hell for leather to make an album that would end up being good enough, it wasn’t going to happen overnight and I knew my wife would not be able to handle the uncertainty of whether it was going to come off or not.”
At a couples therapy session, his perceived foolishness was laid down for him by a marriage counsellor. “The therapist said: ‘This relationship is over. You say you’re going to become a musician, at your age, when you’ve not done it in all this time!’ My wife was clearly terrified about who she’d married, like: ‘Is this guy insane?’”
The therapist suggested Fretwell live in London on weekdays to write music and return to his wife at weekends. He moved into a flat-share in Highgate but, as the songs for Busy Guy came flooding out, the couple’s marriage crumbled under the strain. “I always knew I would be better off putting all my efforts into the kids than attempting to provide financially,” Fretwell says, his voice tailing off. “It was a really hard thing for my wife to go through. I suppose it looked, understandably, to her, that all of a sudden, I just decided that I’d ponce off to a music studio all day. We’ve not got any money. So I’d be going home and say, you know, ‘I’ve been offered a publishing deal for 20 grand, but my manager says I shouldn’t take it’. You know, the stresses that that puts on a family.”
We finish our drinks and Fretwell says he fancies a stroll in the sun and will walk me to the tube station. I ask what his ex-wife thinks of the record. “I think some part of me imagined that she’d hear it and go: ‘Come here, you silly sod!’” But that didn’t happen. She wants it to be a success, he says, but there is no reunion on the cards. “It was stupid … a lot of it was very, very stupid of me.” We part, and Fretwell wanders off into the balmy early evening, a singer-songwriter again.

Tickets for Fretwell’s November UK tour go on sale tomorrow (July 9) at 10am from here .
Speaking about ‘Busy Guy’ – his first new solo album since 2007’s ‘Man On The Roof’ – Fretwell recently explained how he headed into Soho’s Dean Street Studios with producer and Speedy Wunderground boss Dan Carey to record the album.
“I was so fired up I just rattled off the songs,” Fretwell said of the recording process.
The album title, Fretwell explained, was Carey’s idea: “Years ago, Dan asked why I always carried a copy of The Guardian , a notebook and a pen when all I did was go to the pub.
“I said: ‘If you go to the pub at 11am with a newspaper, a notebook and pen, you look like a busy guy rather than a pisshead’. It became a joke between us. The joke too is that I didn’t do any music for years.’”

The 12-date february/march tour will kick off in belfast and round up in london.
By Hollie Geraghty
Stephen Fretwell has announced the dates for a UK and Ireland tour in 2022.
The 12-date tour will kick off in Belfast on February 24 and finish up at London’s Grand Junction on March 11.
The singer-songwriter will also perform in Limerick, Dublin, Brighton, Cambridge, Cardiff, Hull, Liverpool, Newcastle, York and Hebden Bridge.
I’m setting off on tour again in February and March next year! Tickets are on sale on Thursday, hope to see you all there. pic.twitter.com/70BAoDhas0 — Stephen Fretwell (@stephenfretwell) November 29, 2021
Earlier this month Fretwell rounded up a UK tour in Glasgow supporting his comeback album ‘Busy Guy’.
Returning with his first album in 13 years, he also released the single ‘Oval’ in March.
“I think it is a song about marriage, the actuality of it, the responsibility of it, and the gamble,” he said of the track (via NME ). “When my girlfriend was pregnant with our first son, we moved to a flat near the Oval in London. As our marriage fell apart a few years ago, it was this simple song that was the only thing I had to stick in the ground and push on with making some new music.”
Tickets for the 2022 tour go on sale at 10am GMT this Thursday (December 2), and can be purchased here.
Find the full 2022 tour schedule below.
24 – Voodoo, Belfast 25 – Dolans, Limerick 26 – Whelans, Dublin 28 – Komedia, Brighton
1 – Portland Arms, Cambridge 3 – Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff 4 – Social, Hull 5 – Arts Club, Liverpool 7 – The Cluny, Newcastle 8 – The Crescent, York 9 – The Trades Club, Hebden Bridge 11 – Grand Junction, London
Fretwell is known for writing ‘Run’, the theme song for ‘Gavin & Stacey’, but recently explained that he initially turned down the request.
“I was like, ‘No, no, I don’t wanna do that’,” he said in an interview with the BBC in July.
“Then about two months later it [Gavin & Stacey] came out and it had the song on it. I saw [publisher friend] Joe a few nights later and I said to him, ‘Hey that song is on that show’ and he said, ‘Yeah, it’s great isn’t it?’
“I was like, ‘I told you not to put that on that show’. And he was like, ‘No, you said you wanted it on’, and he was smirking at me,” Fretwell added. “And… it’s the best thing anyone’s ever done for me.”

Stephen Fretwell’s long-awaited third album, Busy Guy , was released recently. Described by Fretwell himself as “a song cycle of sorts,” Busy Guy examine the seasons of a life, exploring fatherhood, grief and rebirth, with Fretwell’s trademark eloquence and wit.
Fretwell, now 39, grew up in Scunthorpe but cut his musical teeth in Manchester in the early noughties, playing in the bars and clubs of the legendary Northern Quarter. In the years before that, as a teenager, he visited his cousin who lived in Vienna. On these trips, he’d stay up late with his cousin’s wife and she would play him her record collection (“the Nicks [Cave and Drake], Morrison and Morrissey – who I presumed were related,” he laughs) and talk about her interior life. This experience, witnessing music and lyrics being used to process thoughts and feelings, informed his approach to songwriting, giving his early work a maturity beyond its years.

No other underground system in the world can boast such spectacular architecture – chandeliers, decorations, stucco, paintings on the walls – each station is individually designed. No wonder that Moscow residents love their metro. I will guide you through the bustle of one of the busiest subways in the world and show you the most beautiful stations Moscow city has.

Tour of Communist Moscow – every day
After the Communist October Revolution in 1918, Moscow became the capital of the Soviet Empire and was the center of socialist orbit for more than 70 years. This left its mark on Moscow, even if the USSR disintegrated more than a quarter of a century ago. The city streets are full of remnants of the communist regime and the Cold War. This is a walking tour where I will show you the most exciting places in Soviet Moscow: from the notorious KGB headquarters, also known as Lubyanka to the Karl Marx Monument to small hidden remains from the time of hammer and sickle. You will also learn about Stalin’s Great Terror political campaign and the system of the GULAG and how the USSR, the communist Russian republic, became modern Russia.

Away from the main tourist spots (in the central district of Kitay-Gorod), just a short walk from Red Square and St. Basil’s Cathedral, you suddenly find yourself in one of the trendiest districts of Moscow. This place not only has trendy cafes and green squares, but here you can see the most beautiful spray works (according to Albrecht Dürer), hangout-places of the youth and hipsters, as well as learn what Moscow looked like in the 19th century. Here you will also learn exciting and even bloody stories about famous gangsters, eccentric business people and legends like the wandering preacher Rasputin, who is known in Russia either as the “holy devil” or the mad monk. To learn a little more about Moscow’s culture, this is the tour for you. On my alternative tour, you will get to know Moscow away from the tourist hotspots. This tour is of 2 hours duration and you will experience the following on the tour:
- St. John’s Hill, a quiet oasis right in the center, where time has stopped as it did in pre-Communist times
- Khokhlovka Art Center, where Russian hipsters and street artists hang out
- Samoskvorechye District where you can see beautiful streets and hear stories from old Moscow

Kremlin tour – daily (closed on Thursday)
With its 20 towers and high walls, the Kremlin rises imposingly over Red Square. This world-famous fortress with its area of 28 hectares is home to over 800 years of Russian history. Described as the eighth wonder of the world, this historic fortress complex is the principal symbol of Russia that sits on the banks of the Moscow River. The news comes more than six months after Aerosmith announced that the remainder of the previously scheduled Peace Out shows were to be postponed indefinitely due to Tyler’s injury, which the band had discovered was “more serious than initially thought.”
“I am heartbroken to not be out there with Aerosmith, my brothers and the incredible Black Crowes, rocking with the best fans in the world,” the frontman wrote in a statement at the time. “I promise we will be back as soon as we can.”
“His doctor has confirmed that in addition to the damage to his vocal cords, he fractured his larynx which requires ongoing care,” the band revealed in a separate statement. “He is receiving the best medical treatment available to ensure his recovery is swift, but given the nature of a fracture, he is being told patience is essential.”
