Naples (Napoli, Campania) is one of the most beautiful cities in Italy. It has a great bay with nice views of the Capri and the Ischia Islands. The city is maybe not so delightful as Rome or Florence, but it deserves a place among the destinations a tourist should not miss in Italy.

You will be surprised how easily you can get around by foot, too. Interesting spots are almost on every corner and most distances – especially in the (historic) centre – are small and can be walked in a matter of minutes.

Naples can be a little "rough" around the edges at times! Watch your belongings, pickpockets are really professional here.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Hop-on Hop-off buses in Naples. Their pickup point is only a 5 minute walk from the cruise terminal to the left site of the Castel Nuovo. Some busses have no cover on top, so dress accordingly.

Tips on taking the train to Ercolano, Pompeii and Sorrento. You can also take SITA bus 5001 in front of the terminal to get to Pompei. A 45 minute trip.

A 40 minute boat trip to Sorrento by fast ferries from Beverello (The ferry teminal only 100 meters from where the cruise ships dock) is 12.30 Euro one way. The bus to get you in the center of Sorrento is 1 Euro. Than you can take the train, 1 hour trip , close by (very frequent departures) back to Naples for 4.10 Euro, which also makes a stop at Pompeii. From Napels Garibaldi station take the bus (watch your belongings!!) or take a taxi back to port.

A new metro station opened in 2015 near the cruise terminal, giving good connections to the main train station and the National Museum. Tickets are Euro 1.50, good for an hour. Every 10 minutes. Get off at the Piazza Garibaldi station at Stazione Centrale di Napoli.

Shopping in Naples is a favorite pastime. The city's retail hub is a relatively easy 10-minute walk from the Stazione Maritima. Head past Castel Nuovo and up to Via Chiaia, a (mostly) pedestrian street lined with shops and bars. Via Chiaia is the favorite place to shop. Left and right of here one wanders in to a myriad of small but characterful alleys and picturesque squares.

Galleria Umberto I is a large covered shopping area similar to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan.

For lunch or dinner with a view head west and stay close to the waterfront to the Via Riviera di Chiara with its many outdoor cafe's (heated on cold days).

Most shops and businesses in Italy open from Monday to Saturday from around 8am until 1pm, and from about 4pm until 7pm, though many shops close on Saturday afternoons and Monday mornings, and in the south the day can begin and end an hour later. In the north some businesses work to a 9am-5pm day to facilitate international dealings. Traditionally, everything except bars and restaurants closes on Sunday, though most towns have a pasticceria open in the mornings, while in large cities and tourist areas, Sunday opening is becoming more common.

Naples Cruise Port

Naples is the third-largest city in Italy after Rome and Milan, and the port of Naples ranks among the largest ports in the Mediterranean. Naples cruise ship terminal is located in the southern part of the city, within a short walking distance from the historic center.

The Naples cruise terminal is called Stazione Maritima , and it consists of several piers. The main pier where the cruise ships dock is Molo Beverello , situated next to the busy marina and 100 meters away from the ferry port terminal from where you can take ferries to Sorrento and Capri island.

The terminal building is large and consists of a multitude of modern facilities, such as a brand-new shopping mall, tourist information desks, ATMs, restrooms, cafeterias, restaurants, and a spacious parking lot for tour buses and taxis.

Getting Around Naples, Italy

• Naples port area is flat and wheelchair accessible, however, the city is partially uphill so make sure you wear comfortable footwear.
• The currency in Italy is EURO (€). ATMs are available at the cruise terminal area and in the city. Local currency and credit cards are widely accepted.
• You can get a public bus on Via Nuova Marina (“via” means “the street” in Italian) that runs parallel to the port, only a 5-minute walk upon exiting the terminal. The metro stations “Municipio” and “Università” are the closest ones, reachable in less than a 10-minute walk from the cruise terminal.
• Public buses, trams, metro and funiculars in Naples are operated by ANM – Azienda Napoletana Mobilità. TIC – Ticket Integrato Campania, is an integrated fare for public transport in Naples and there are single, hourly, daily, 7-day, monthly and annual TIC tickets and passes.  You can purchase the tickets at tabacchi (tobacco stores), news kiosks, and ticket machines at Metro and funicular stations and at some bus stops. • Naples central station (Napoli Centrale) is located at Piazza Garibaldi, around 3 km/1.9 miles (a 35-minute walk, or a 15-minute drive) northeast of Naples port. Trains in Italy are operated by the national company Trenitalia, and you can check the timetables and prices at https://www.trenitalia.com/
• The best way to get from Naples cruise port to Naples central station is to take the subway at the Municipio metro station and get off at the Piazza Garibaldi station at Stazione Centrale di Napoli (Napoli Centrale railway station). The metro ride lasts 15 minutes, and trains go every 10 minutes. You can also take tram line 1 , or bus line 151 . You can catch these in Via Cristoforo Colombo, opposite the cruise terminal. Alternatively, you can take a taxi or walk for about 30 minutes to the Central Station. 
• Circumvesuviana is a regional train line that serves the area around Mount Vesuvius and connects Naples to Herculaneum, Pompeii and Sorrento. The line departs from the lower level of Napoli Centrale station at Piazza Garibaldi (you don’t physically leave the building, you just turn left at the end of the platform and keep going following the signs above). • The Campania Express is a special version of the Circumvesuviana train line. It is ideal for tourists as it doesn’t have as many stops as Circumvesuviana and is much more comfortable (guaranteed seats, air-conditioning, luggage storage). This line only stops in Garibaldi/Central Station Naples, Ercolano Scavi (for Herculaneum and Mount Vesuvius), Pompei, and Sorrento. 1. Castel Nuovo

Also known as Maschio Angioino Castle, Castel Nuovo is located at the exit of the cruise terminal area. This massive 13th-century military castle dominates the harbor and Piazza Municipio with its Neoclassical Palazzo San Giacomo, which houses the City Hall. The castle has five imposing towers and served as a royal seat for the kings of Naples, Aragon, and Spain until 1815. Today, Castel Nuovo houses a civic museum containing extensive art collections dating from the 15 th to the 20 th centuries, while some halls of the castle are used for temporary cultural exhibitions and events.

2. Castel dell Ovo

The majestic seaside castle is located at the southernmost tip of Naples city, on a peninsula (a former island) with an excellent strategic position that dominates the Gulf of Naples. It is situated 1.5 km/1 mile or a 20-minute walk from the Naples cruise port and is well worth visiting, as it is the oldest standing fortification in Naples built by the Normans in the 12 th century. There is no entrance fee, and you can climb to its two towers and an observation deck from where you can take in the breathtaking views of the Gulf of Naples and Mount Vesuvius in the distance.

3. Piazza del Plebiscito

Situated around 800 meters, or a 10-minute walk from the Naples cruise port, the 19th-century Piazza del Plebiscito is one of the largest and most beautiful squares in Naples. With its 53-meter high dome and Greek-style columns, a large, monumental Basilica San Francesco di Paola (Church of Saint Francis) dominates Piazza del Plebiscito. The Basilica was built in the Neo-classical style and is reminiscent of Rome’s Pantheon. Simple, yet impressive, the interior of the church features valuable and beautiful architecture and artwork.

The renowned 18th-century  San Carlo Theater and Opera House (Teatro di San Carlo), as well as the 17th-century sumptuously decorated Royal Palace of Naples (Palazzo Reale di Napoli), are other two important buildings that you can see around the square.

4. Castel Sant’Elmo

Perched atop the Vomero hill overlooking the city of Naples, Castel Sant’Elmo is a medieval, star-shaped fortress with a rich history dating back to the 14th century. Originally built as a royal residence, it later served as a military stronghold. Today, Castel Sant’Elmo houses the Naples Museum of Medieval Art, showcasing a diverse collection of artifacts.

The highlight of the castle is the breathtaking panoramic views of Naples and the Bay of Naples that you can admire from the top. The easiest way to reach the castle is by funicular that you can catch on Via Toledo (one of the main streets located a 10-minute walk from the port). The funicular runs all the time and will take you to the top of the hill. From the top station, you still need to walk about 10 minutes to the castle. A small entrance fee is required to enter the castle (it was 5€ in 2023).

5. Naples Cathedral

Also known as Duomo di San Gennaro or the Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary, it is the main church of Naples completed in the 14 th century in honor of Saint Januarius, the patron saint of the city. It is located 2 km/1.2 miles or a 25-minute walk from the Naples cruise port. It boasts a stunning neo-Gothic façade and an equally impressive interior featuring art-filled chapels, and 4th-century mosaics and relics.

6. Naples Old Town

Naples is a vibrant city bursting with life, full of colorful, authentic streets where you can find plenty of shops, restaurants, cafes, bars, street sellers, and much more. There are several streets you can explore, and they are all within walking distance from Naples cruise port.

The most famous ones are the pedestrian streets Via Toledo and Via Chiaia – they are both located a 15-minute walking distance from the port and they meet at Piazza del Plebiscito and Fontana del Carciofo. They are super crowded and packed with countless shops, restaurants, bars, and pizzerias offering mouth-watering pizzas, panzerotti, pasta, and other Italian authentic dishes.

Another famous street that traverses the Naples historic center is Spaccanapoli – a narrow, straight, and long promenade where you can explore historic churches, palaces, bustling piazzas, unique shops, and a large number of restaurants, bars, and open-air cafes.

7. Taste the Local Pizza

When it comes to tasting pizza in Naples – it is an absolute must! The pizza was invented in Naples, and in every place where I tried it – that was the best pizza I’ve ever had in my life! For over one century, L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele has had the reputation of making the best pizza in Naples, and that’s where Julia Roberts was featured indulging in a slice of pizza in the “Eat, Pray, Love” movie. 8. Galleria Umberto I

Located only a 10-minute walk from Naples cruise port, Galleria Umberto I stands next to the San Carlo Theater and near Piazza del Plebiscito. It is a cross-shaped, glass-and-iron-covered public shopping gallery built in the 19 th century, declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site. Featuring a large glass dome and the Art-Nouveau architectural style, the gallery is home to numerous cafes and shops, and you can access it for free.

9. Galleria Borbonica

Also known as Bourbon Gallery or Bourbon Tunnel, it is an impressive underground passage built for military purposes to connect the Royal Palace to military barracks in Naples. It is situated 2 km/1.2 miles, or a 25-minute somewhat uphill walk from the Naples cruise port and represents one of the most unique places you can visit in Naples. Constructed in the 19 th century, the stunning underground tunnels served as an escape route for the royal inhabitants, and also as a shelter for Naples residents during the bombardments during World War II.

Time permitting, I highly recommend you take one of the Bourbon Tunnel tours , as they are a fascinating way to discover the important and emotional moments in the history of Naples. On tour, you can visit underground caves, a restored ancient cistern, vintage artifacts dating from WWII, pieces of sculptures, old cars and bikes, and much more. If you are seeking some adrenaline rush, you can go for an adventure or Speleo tour as well. Overall, I was truly impressed by the visit, and I strongly suggest you put it on your Naples bucket list.

10. Pompeii

Pompeii visit is by far the most popular day trip from Naples, due to the huge historical importance of this world-famous archaeological site. Nestled at the foothills of Mount Vesuvius, the ancient city of Pompeii, along with Herculaneum and other neighboring towns, was buried under 4 to 6 meters (13 to 20 ft) of volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of the powerful Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The everyday life of this wealthy city was frozen at the moment it was buried, thus the excavated site offered a unique snapshot of Roman life and its inhabitants.

Pompeii archeological site has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the most visited attractions in Italy. Today, visitors can roam through the elegantly paved streets of ancient Pompeii, admire the ruins of the lavish mansions and villas of distinguished Romans, visit their elaborate bathhouses, a multitude of Roman temples, a massive 20.000-capacity Amphitheatre of Pompeii, and more. You can learn about the tragic destiny of the ancient city and over 2.000 Pompeii residents on a self-guided tour, or on a guided tour which I highly recommend.

If  the weather is hot and sunny, make sure you bring a hat and water, as the largest portion of the Pompeii Archeological Park is not shaded. Keep an eye on your belongings, as there are many pickpockets on the trains in particular. Wear comfortable shoes , as there is a lot of walking involved. How to Get from Naples to Pompeii?

The distance from Naples cruise port to Pompeii Archeological Park is 25 km/15.5 miles, or a 25-minute drive. There are several ways to get from Naples to Pompeii.

• BOOK A TOUR – Although it takes a full day to explore Pompeii, cruise ships offer half-day tours to Pompeii from Naples . These tours often include traveling in big groups, but in my opinion, to fully enjoy the place, you should go for a  small-group tour . In case you decide to visit on your own, make sure you book Pompeii skip-the-line tickets to avoid long queues and crowds.
• BOOK A TAXI/PRIVATE TRANSFER – In case you’ve already booked your entrance tickets to Pompeii, the private transfer is the best, fastest, and most convenient option to get to the ruins. It’s even cheaper than a taxi and guarantees you a safe return to the ship. Compare the transfer prices from Napoli to Pompei
• TRAIN FROM NAPLES TO POMPEII – Take the Circumvesuviana train at Napoli Centrale (Naples central train station at Piazza Garibaldi) and get off at Pompei Scavi/Villa Dei Misteri stop. The train ride lasts 30-35 minutes, and trains go every 30 minutes. Once you get off at Pompeii Scavi-Villa Dei Misteri, the entrance to the archeological site is only a 5-minute walk. The Circumvesuviana line to Pompeii is quite busy, and you might not be able to get a seat. There is no luggage disposal area. Due to the large crowds on the trains, I suggest you save at least one hour for the ride each way.

11. Herculaneum Ruins

Located around 15 km/9.5 miles, or less than a 30-minute drive from Naples cruise port, Herculaneum is another ancient city in Campania that was destroyed in the Vesuvius eruption in 79 AD along with Pompeii and several other neighboring towns. Smaller in size than Pompeii, but equally wealthy, Herculaneum was a popular resort town and seaside destination for many Roman patrician families.

Today, visitors can stroll through the ruins of Herculaneum and visit the wealthy Roman’s notable houses, sumptuously adorned baths, halls decorated with frescoes and mosaics, splendid arches and columns, spacious atriums… The most popular ruins are Men’s Baths, Hall of the Augustals, Samnite House, House of Relief of Telephus, and Fornici. It takes only 2-3 hours to visit Herculaneum, which is an ideal option for a half-day trip.

Some parts of the Herculaneum ruins are not wheelchair accessible, and it is highly recommended to leave kids’ strollers or pushchairs at the free bag check counter at the entrance.

How to Get to Herculaneum from Naples?

• BOOK A TOUR – You can visit Herculaneum with a cruise ship shore excursion or on a private, customized tour (always the most convenient option!)/ small group tour . The archeological site is not as large as Pompeii, and a Herculaneum tour lasts from 2-3 hours.
• BOOK A TAXI/PRIVATE TRANSFER – It takes a 30-minute drive to get from Naples to Herculaneum and it’s always the most comfortable option.
• TAKE A TRAIN TO HERCULANEUM – A train ride is an alternative option. Take the Circumvesuviana train at Naples central station (Napoli Centrale – Piazza Garibaldi) and get off at the “ Ercolano Scavi ” stop, located a 10-minute walk from Herculaneum. Circumvesuviana train line runs every 30 minutes between Naples and Sorrento and has several stops, including Pompeii and Herculaneum stops. The train ride from Naples to Herculaneum lasts 15-20 minutes. 

12. Mount Vesuvius

Towering over the city of Naples and the ruins of the ancient Pompeii, Herculaneum, and neighboring cities, the mighty Vesuvius dominates the Gulf of Naples and is one of several volcanoes that form the Campanian volcanic arc. Vesuvius has become notoriously world-famous due to the eruption in 79 AD that buried the ancient Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis, and Stabiae, killing 16.000 people overall. The Vesuvius has erupted over 50 times for thousands of years, and its last eruption lasted from 1913-1944. It is still considered active, and one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world.

Today, it is possible to visit the Vesuvius National Park and explore its trails, the Great Cono crater (Il Gran Cono) situated at 1.000 meters above sea level, and the park’s rich historical and cultural heritage, consisting of the museum, archeological sites, the Roman villas, and historical buildings. If you are into hiking, there is a network of 11 paths of a total length of 54 km (33.5 mi) that you can explore and enjoy spectacular panoramic views of Naples, Lazio, and the Campania region.

The Mount Vesuvius hike is moderate and you should wear comfortable shoes. Bring a hat, water and of course a good camera . The visit to the crater lasts approximately 1.5 hours. Check the weather because if it rains, you won’t be able to see the crater (it is closed for safety reasons).

Hot to Get from Naples to Mount Vesuvius?

• BOOK A TOUR – Cruise ships normally offer the Mount Vesuvius hiking tours, but the number of spots available on these tours is quite limited, so make sure you pre-book the tickets to ensure your spot. If you are looking for a more private option, you should go for   small group tours . 
• BOOK A TAXI/PRIVATE TRANSFER – The distance between the Naples cruise port and Mount Vesuvius is roughly 20 km/12.5 miles, or a 30-minute drive.
• VISIT VESUVIUS BY TRAIN – Take the Circumvesuviana train for Sorrento or Poggiomarino via Pompeii at Naples central station (Stazione Centrale – Piazza Garibaldi) and get off at either Ercolano Scavi station (the one where you get off for Herculaneum) or Pompei – Villa Dei Misteri (the one where you get off for Pompeii). From both train stations, you can hop on the local bus going to Vesuvius. The local bus company is EAV, and the buses run quite rarely (every hour or even more). 

13. Sorrento

Located on the opposite side of the Gulf of Naples, about 50 km/31 miles from the port of Naples, Sorrento is a magnificent cliffside town and a popular tourist resort on the Sorrentine Peninsula. Sorrento boasts a scenic coastline, gorgeous landscapes, and a multitude of colorful houses, and is widely known for its wood-carving traditions, ceramics, marquetry, and lacework shops.

You can stroll through its lively Tasso Square (Piazza Tasso), the central square where you’ll find quaint shops, restaurants, and bars serving delicious Italian specialties and local wine. Delight in the views of the picturesque port of Sorrento – Marina Grande , browse the shops of Via san Cesareo – the main shopping hub of the city, visit a beautiful 14th-century Cathedral of Sorrento , or take in the breathtaking views of the bay from Villa Comunale park and gardens.

How to Get from Naples to Sorrento?

• BOOK A TOUR : Cruise ships and independent tour operators offer a wide variety of shore excursions to Sorrento, which is the best option if you want to have a Sorrento guided tour and hear fascinating stories and legends associated with this beautiful coastal town.
• TAKE A FERRY FROM NAPLES TO SORRENTO – The fastest and one of the most pleasant ways to reach the town is to take a ferry to Sorrento from Naples cruise port. The ferry ride can take between 35 minutes to 1h 10 minutes, depending on the ferry company. You embark on the ferry at Molo Beverello ferry station, located only a 5-minute walk from the cruise ship’s dock. The ferries run every 90 minutes, and the main ferry company that provides the ferry services is Alilauro. You can check rates and departure times on their website: http://www.alilauro.it/ . You can purchase the tickets at the ticket office at Molo Beverello, or online (I highly recommend you buy them at the ferry station because the ride can sometimes be canceled due to rough weather , etc.).
• BOOK A TAXI/PRIVATE TRANSFER TO SORRENTO – The distance between Naples cruise port and Sorrento is 50 km/31 miles or a 1-hour drive. This is the most comfortable and safest option, especially for families with kids and groups of more than 3 people. 
• TAKE A TRAIN FROM NAPLES TO SORRENTO – The train ride is another popular and convenient option. The train from Naples to Sorrento departs from Naples central station – Napoli Stazione Centrale and two rail lines are going to Sorrento: Circumvesuviana line or Campania Express. 14. Amalfi Coast

A trip to the marvelous Amalfi Coast is one of the most attractive day trips from Naples. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this scenic stretch of coastline is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Italy. Dramatic mountain cliffs, eye-catching, colorful villages, terraced vineyards, secluded pebbled beaches, and bright-yellow lemon groves are the typical landscapes you can admire while you travel through this gorgeous region.

Amalfi Coast consists of a multitude of villages, the most famous one being Amalfi – a tiny, seaside village boasting narrow, cobblestone streets lined with cafes, shops, and typical Italian restaurants, and a beautiful St. Andrew Cathedral (Cathedral of Sant’ Andrea). The cathedral dominates the main village square – Piazza del Duomo , and dates from the 9 th century when the original church was built. The Cathedral features a magnificent 18th-century Norman-Arab-Byzantine façade and the splendid Cloister of Paradise that served as a burial ground for the noble Amalfi families back in the Middle Ages. • TRAIN FROM NAPLES TO AMALFI COAST – To get to Amalfi Coast, the best option is to embark on a train at Napoli Centrale to Vietri Sul Mare, one of the villages of the Amalfi Coast. The train ride lasts about 1 hour and has one connection stop at Salerno.  From Vietri Sul Mare, you can use the local public transport – SITA buses , to get to other villages. Another option is to take a train directly from Naples to Salerno (a 40-minute ride), and then take the SITA local bus to Amalfi, Maiori, Minori, Ravello, and other villages. It takes a 45-minute drive to reach Amalfi from Salerno. Check SITA bus schedules on the company’s official website . Last but not least, you can take the train to Sorrento, and then switch to one of the SITA buses that serve Amalfi Coast villages. This is a better option if you want to visit Positano or Praiano villages. Keep in mind that an option that includes a local bus can be slow and is not recommended to cruise passengers due to the ship’s limited time in port.
• TAKE A FERRY : From April to October, you can take a train/ferry to Sorrento, and then take a local bus to Amalfi Coast. An alternative option is to take a train or bus to Salerno, and then take a round-trip ferry or hydrofoil ride to Positano, Minori, and Amalfi. The departure point in Salerno is Concordia Square (Piazza Della Concordia), opposite the train station. Check the ferry connections and timetables here: https://www.livesalerno.com/

15. The Island of Capri

Known as “the Island of Dreams”, Capri is one of the most exclusive Italian resorts and a popular day trip from Naples. The tiny island boasts a great number of natural attractions and historic sights, and its main city bears the same name as the island – Capri.

• NAPLES TO CAPRI FERRY RIDE – The ferry ride varies from 50 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes, and there are several companies providing ferry transport. Some of them depart from Molo Beverello and some from Calata Porta di Massa (located next to it). There are high-speed, regular, and slow ferries, and the frequency depends on the season (from April to October they are more frequent due to the number of tourists). Cruise ships dock at Naples Stazione Marittima. The cruise terminal in Naples is right in front of the city centre of Naples. From here you can easily explore the city by foot. The cruise terminal has all the facilities you could want like post office, tourist information, shops, wi-fi etc.

The cruise terminal lies at a very convenient place and still Naples has all the facilites to easily get further afield. Check underneath what the most popular options are:

Taxis in Naples

Taxis are available outside the cruise terminal. These taxis have a meter, but they rather make a deal with you before you step in. In front of the cruise terminal the prices are also on display. To name you a few:

The tain system around Naples is very extensive and its a great way to get around. Here is what you need to know about the train:

Naples Circumvesuviana This is the name of the train that goes from Naples around Mt. Vesuvius. You can reach all of the mayor Vesuvius excavation sights with this line. The trains go frequent and are cheap. Go from the cruise terminal to the train station Napoli Garibaldi by taking tram 1 or bus 15, walk 2,5 km or take a 7 euro taxi ride.

Buy a TIC ticket at the booth at the main road in front of the terminal. This ticket is valid for public transport in Naples and for the train. The trains go very frequent, but if you want you can check the train schedule at http://www.eavsrl.it/web/home

The following stations connect to the following sights:

Pompei – scavi villa misteri = Pompei. Train ride takes +/- 35 minutes. Station is 200 meters from the sight.

Ercolano Scavi Station = Herculaneum. Train ride takes +/- 16 minutes. Station is 800 meters from the sight.

You can even go further afield with the train to Sorrento for example. This train ride takes just over an hour.

In front of the terminal directly to the left as you exit the terrain you will find a ferry station called Molo Beverello. Catch the ferry to Capri or Sorrento from here. These ferries go pretty frequent, but it is wise to check the schedule on http://www.capri.net/en/ferry-schedule?path_id=11

Hop on hop off bus

You will find the red dubble decker busses in Naples close to where you dock. There has been a lot of construction work at the door step of the Naples Cruise Centre and therefore it could be that if you don’t see the bus right away it leaves from behind the castle in front of the cruise terminal. The bus only stays in Naples and it is wheelchair accessible.

Archeological museum = 2,5 km walk uphill

Via dei Tribunali = 2 km walk uphill

Herculaneum = 15 km / 20 min drive south east

Amalfi coast = 60 km / 1 hrs 30 min drive south

Capri = 43 km south. Can only be reached by ferry.

Naples has 4 castles. On top of the hill lies the “baby” castle. It is a star shaped military fortress on top of the Vomero Hill. Visit the castle and have look in its Novecento museum, High Prison and collection of modern art.

At just about 30 minutes drive from Naples you will find one of the most famous excavations in the world. This ancient city got covered in ashed after the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. Blessed with the title “World’s best pizza” and straight out of the blockbuster movie “Eat, Pray, Love” with Julia Roberts this place must be the most popular spot in Naples. It is a tiny pizzeria where drinks come in plastic cups and pizzas only come in margherita or marinara. Keep in mind there might be lines, but you always have to option on going to the pizzeria across the street.

This ferry station is right in front of the cruise terminal. You will come across it as you walk out. This is where you can catch the ferry to Capri or Sorrento. If you were go for lunch at the Earl of Sandwich you order a sandwich. If you go for lunch in Naples you order a margharita pizza. This is the place where pizza was invented in the 16th century. Later in 1889 the Margherita pizza was invented when Queen consort of Italy, Margherita of Savoy, visited Naples. Especially for her they made a pizza that resembles the colors on the Italian flag.

At one of the random picturesque squares (Gese Nuovo square) in Naples is where you are going to come across this unusual gothic structure. You will find the church of Gesú Nuovo, church of Santa Chiara and the spire of the Immaculate Virgin here.

This square forms the centre one which a lot of the most important buildings of Napels are located on. Make sure not to miss this part of the city. It is named for the plebiscite in 1863 that brought Naples into the unified Kingdom of Italy.

Just north of Via Toledo you will find the Sqanish quater. This among the locals in known as the area suffering from high unemployment, but to many it also doesn’t get any more typical than this. Just looking at this picture already you see this is the Naples as you had envisioned it.

In front of the cruise terminal you can already see one of the eye catchers of the city: Castel Nuovo. It is a medieval castle that distinguishes itself by its architecture and history. Take a look inside the castle and visit its museum.

On the Via San Gregorio Armeno you will find “Crib makers street” (see map). Visit this street to see the nativity scene makers at work on their Neapolitan Crib. This happens year round although during Christmas more than half a million tourist come to see the shops with the original miniature figurines and the shops.

Spaccanapoli means “Split Naples” and this is exactly what it does. It is a perfect straight street and it runs directly through the historical district of Naples. Walk it from begin to end to come across the most famous monuments, churches and sights of the city.

What to do in Eight Hours ashore… NAPLES, Italy – a Cruise Port Guide…

Naples, in the region of Campagnia, Italy, is an almost perfect port to visit on your cruise. The unmistakable shape of Vesuvius is first thing you see, sitting on the horizon as you enter the Bay of Naples. Your ship will berth at the deep water harbour of the Stazione Marittima which is close to town, the Metro, railway and to local ferries, right next to Castel Nuovo and the Piazza dal Municipo.

Naples is a love it or hate it destination! I really like the little back streets and cafes, the museums, galleries and churches, I even quite like the ubiquitous scooters and graffiti and am quite happy wandering the main parts of the city but I do accept that it has a bit of a seedy side and that you really shouldn’t wander too far off the beaten track, especially on your own. There is a lot of talk on cruise forums about bag snatching and pickpocketing but I’m not sure that it is any worse than in many other cities, certainly a bit of common sense it needed but it is not a dangerous city in any real sense although it is true that the Camorra ( Naples mafia) are still active behind the secenes.

To me Naples is an almost perfect port to visit on your cruise, there is just so much to see and do that it will definitely take more than one or two visits to see it all. The unmistakable shape of Vesuvius appears on the horizon as you enter the Bay of Naples and headfor your berth at the deep water harbour of the Stazione Marittima, right next to Castel Nuovo and the Piazza dal Municipo. Here you are close to town, the Metro, railway and to local ferries.

This Port Profile is on the city Naples itself…there is much more to see if you travel out of town; Vesuvius, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Sorrento, Capri and Ischia just to name a few – but there is a lot to see in Naples without getting on a coach, train or ferry.

Naples was founded by the Greeks in about 10BC and became part of the Roman Empire in about 4BC. The eruption of Vesuvius in AD79 was visible from Naples and there is a written description of the event by the Roman writer Pliny, who was watching it from the town of Misenum, (now Miseno) just further around the bay of Naples to the west. The town of Herculaneum, directly beneath the volcano, was buried under a sea of lava and mud. The town of Pompeii which was further to the east missed the lava but was hit by a cloud of poisonous gas know as a pyroclastic surge which killed everyone in the town and buried it beneath a thick layer of cinders and ash, preserving it for us to visit today!

Following the fall of the Roman Empire, Naples came under Byzantine rule during which time it flourished. In the years that followed it became part of the Norman kingdom of Sicily and then part of the Angevin kingdom, of which it was the capital city. By 1503 the Spanish had taken control of the town which grew to be the largest city in Italy. Naples was modernised by the Bourbon King Charles III in the 18th century, his ambitious programme of buildings included a Royal Place at Caserta which he based on the palace of Versailles, and the town became an important stop of the ‘Grand’ Tour’ of Europe made by the wealthy and educated of the day.

In 1860 Naples became part of Garibaldi’s new ‘Unified Italy’ and was a popular desination for musicians artists, architects and playwrights such as Oscar Wilde. You can see the influences of this Art Nuevo period in Piazza Dante and around town but more obvious is the Monumental Fascist architecture, particularly in some of the town major institutions such as the the bank of Naples, the post office and the Stazione Marittima where your ship is berthed. The majority of 1930s architecture was destroyed in WW2 and post war rebuilding was haphazard at best, directed more for their own financial gain by local politicians than with any sense of regeneration or restoration.

Today Naples is a vibrant and creative city, full of music and song, which celebrates its history whilst looking towards the future. You will find modern art installations such as the Salt Mountain in Piazza del Plebiscito in close proximity to the historical Angovese Castel Nuovo, built in 1279, which is right by the entrance to todays port.

The Cruise Terminal is bright and airy, it has all the usual things including some shops and a small pharmacy, from here it is an easy walk into town. It is easy to explore out from Naples either on organised tours or by yourself on trains or ferries. It is possible to hire a car from just outside the Terminal but unless you are completely happy driving in Europe I would probably avoid the appalling Naples traffic. The ferry terminal (Molo Beverello) is closer to the cruise terminal then any of the rental car offices and, if you want to travel out of town say to Ischia, Capri or Sorrento, a ferry is probably more fun!

There is also a HOHO bus in town if that appeals, there are two intersecting loops that visit many of the main sights such as Museo dell’Opera Duomo, Basilica of Santa Croce, Palazzo Pitti and Teatro Verdi but it travels well out of town to Posillipo and does not go up to Monte Santo, or into the centre of the old town Naples so I would take a look at the map and decide if it is for you. Personally I think you will see more of the city with a combination of walking, buses and the Funicular Railways.

The Funicular system of trains taking people up to Monte Santo and Chaia (as celebrated in the Neapolitan song Funiculi, Funicular ) was built in 1875 and is one of the real symbols of the city along with Pulcinella (a masked performer that has echoes of the plague doctors of Venice, but whose function to to make people laugh), the hand carved wood Nativity ( Naples is home to workshops that make beautiful hand carved Nativities that are popular all over Italy) and of course pizza, which was invented here in the 18th Century ( apparently in pretty much any restaurant you care to ask!).

Within easy flat walking of the port is Castel Nuevo with its stunning renaissance arched entrance, the 16th century Palazzo Reale and stables, the San Francesco di Paola Church, the Teatro San Carlo, the oldest opera house in Europe Galleria and Galleria Umberto I – a large iron and glass covered shopping area similar to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan.Exit from the Galleria onto the main street in Naples, Via Toledo.

If you head north you will reach the older area of the city. If you turn right onto Via Capitelli you will be in the Spaccanapoli, a long straight street with various names along its way dating from Roman times that cuts right across the city. It is lined with churches, Palazzos and squares, any or all of which are worth a short visit and walking the shady, deep street is also brief respite from the heat!

There are some wonderful sculptures in Naples, but two in particular, Veiled Christ by Sanmartino and Modesty by Corradini can be found in the tiny Capella Sansevero just north of Spaccanapoli on Via San dom Maggiore. If you are interested in sculpture then head a bit further north to the Museo Archeologico Nazionale where they have a wonderful collection including the Farnese Bull, the largest group sculpture to have survived from 200BC, and the Farnese Atlas holding the world on his shoulders, there are also some absolutely stunning artefacts and mosaics from Pompeii (especially the recreated Temple of Isis) and many other treasures from the collection built up by the Medici family during the Renaissance.

Between Spaccanapoli and the Museum you will cross another straight Roman street, the Via dei Tribunali, also lined with shops as well as ancient monasteries, churches and the 13th century Duomo (cathedral) which was built incorporating much older buildings on the site including the mosaic decorated Baptistry which dates from AD550. Next to another church, San Paolo Maggiore, you will find the entrance to one of Naples’ less well known features, the Napoli Sotterranea, a huge network of underground passages, catacombs and aqueducts which are only open for visits on Saturdays and Sundays; dating from Roman times and extended over the centuries they were used in WW2 as shelters during the bombing and many are still used today as interconnecting storage areas and cellars beneath the city.

You can also access underground Naples in other places, for example the catacombs beneath San Severo & San Gennaro churches, and if such things interest you, you could also visit the Cimitero delle fontanelle where there is a fairly gruesome underground ossuary. All of these attractions are slightly further north of the city as is the lovely Capodimonte Park and Museum.

This was built as a palace by Charles III to house the Medici collections that belonged to his mother Elizabeth Farnese, it is surrounded by a small park where Charles liked to hunt. This is also where he introduced porcelain manufacture into Italy , the resulting Capodimonte china figures becoming as famous as the Meissen china it was founded to copy. The Queens Parlour in the museum is tiled with nearly 300 tiles of fine porcelain. The whole area is good place to escape from town for a little while on a hot sunny day!

The same is true of Monte Santo which is accessed by the original funicular railway. A short trip to the top is fun to do and you will find the towns Maritime Museum, housed in old monastery with beautiful views out over the Bay of Naples and the port.

Your will find designer shops in Galleria Umberto 1 and some nice pedestrian shopping areas and pizzerias around Via dei Tribunali. There are street markets on Corso Umberto by the Garibaldi Train Station and Via Chiaia is a pedestrianised street with lots of boutiques. Do not miss the Neapolitan Christmas shops with their famous Nativity scenes – they are mainly found on Spaccanopoli.

The 1950s style Naples of the Elena Farrantes books is still to be found in the Luzatti area and on the island of Ischia where you may well fall across a TV crew filming her new adaptation of My Brilliant Friend for HBO! If you are a fan of the books you might like to try lookingforlila.com or en.platypustour.it to organise a themed tour. On the subject of books the pizzeria that featured in the film of the book ‘Eat, pray, love’ is Da Michele on Via Sersale, 13 – it only serves margherita or marinara pizza but you can’t go to Naples without trying a traditional neapolitan, margherita pizza! It is made with a thin, hand kneaded crust and buffalo milk mozarella cooked quickly in a hot oven.

Traditional pizzerias like Da Michele and Di Matteo on Via dei Tribunali, 94 have very sparse interiors with small plastic cups for your drink but very cheap prices for a pizza. It’s an experience…

Naples is a port that features on many Mediterranean itineraries so you will probably find yourself there more than once. Although Pompeii, Vesuvius and Capri are the more obvious trips I highly recommend that you spend a day in the town at some point, Naples is a special place that deserves a little exploring!

Bourbon Tunnel

Located beneath the streets of Naples is a tunnel many tourists don’t know exists. Called the Bourbon Tunnel, it was commissioned by King Ferdinand II of Bourbon in 1853 as an escape route for the royal family from the royal palace to the military barracks. It was never finished during King Ferdinand’s life and wasn’t used until World War II, when it became a shelter for citizens of Naples during war bombings. You can still see items left behind by the families who had to seek cover in the tunnel. After the war it became a storage place for old cars, fascist statues, and other unwanted articles that needed somewhere to be cast aside. Today you can see all that and more – referred to as the Bourbon Gallery – on tours through the Bourbon Tunnel.

Public Ferry

Taxis are available at the exit of the port and throughout the city center. In Naples, you won’t find fixed fares for taxi rides so time and distance will come into play in calculating your fare. Taxi drivers in Naples do often accept credit cards, but it’s still smart to inquire before using a taxi if it’s cash only.

Shopping isn’t hard to find in Naples. Just head to the city center, which is just about a 10-minute walk from the cruise terminal and you’ll find a both boutiques and shops for popular brands.

If you love designer brands and a good bargain, head thirty minutes outside of the city to La Reggia Designer Outlet, where you’ll find over 100 stores in which to browse.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The euro is the accepted currency in Naples and the rest of Italy. ATMs dispensing euros are located around the city. Credit cards are also accepted in most places in and around Naples, though it’s wise to double check beforehand if you aren’t able to pay with cash.

Tipping is appreciated in Italy, though not expected, and is generally at the discretion of the guest. Tips are typically not already included in bills, though a service charge sometimes is, which is often a few euros.

Conveniently located in the heart of the bustling city of Naples, the cruise terminal is a mere 10-minute walk from the city center, in the bay of Naples.

The main port in which the cruise port can be found is called the Port of Naples or ‘Porto di Napoli’ in Italian .

The main port of Naples houses cargo and container ships as well as has a dedicated passenger cruise terminal with 10 mooring places.

The Naples cruise terminal can be found to the west of the harbor and is made up of three piers.

The largest pier (known as Stazione Maritima) houses a handful of eateries and even a shopping center.

How to Get to Naples City Center from the Cruise Port

There are a number of ways to reach Naples city center from your cruise ship.

Naples Cruise Port is only a 10-minute walk from the city center . The walk from the cruise terminal is straightforward, taking you down a path beside the road which will lead you right into the city.

Alternatively, shuttle buses are available between the cruise ship and the city center. These come and go at regular intervals.

Another option is to take a taxi. There is a taxi rank just outside the cruise terminal, and it is ideal to use if you want to venture slightly further afield.

Finally, there is an underground station close to the cruise terminal known as Municipio Station.

Reaching this station is a mere 10-minute walk from your cruise ship. It’s located to the north of Piazza Municipio, a large square next to Castel Nuovo, a grand medieval castle.

Are There Free Shuttles From Naples Cruise Port?

There are shuttle buses between the cruise port and the city center, which are organized by the port.

However, their price depends on your cruise liner. Some liners offer this service for free whilst others charge for it.

In the heart of Naples city, you will find Piazza del Plebiscito, a majestic square surrounded by elaborate buildings which are exceptional examples of neo-classical architecture, including the Royal Palace of Naples.

The Basilica Reale Pontificia San Francesco da Paola, a striking basilica, takes center stage here, characterized by Greek-style columns. In front of it are two equestrian statues.

The square can be marveled at independently. Alternatively, there are a number of tours of Naples available, which include visits to this fantastic square.

2. Wander around the Historic Center of Naples

Covering an expansive area of 1,700 hectares (4,200 acres), Naples’ historic old town is one of the largest in Europe.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Naples is home to an abundance of historical sites, churches, squares, charming narrow streets, and a wealth of cafes, restaurants, and shops.

It also houses some incredible monuments, such as Castel Nuovo (an ancient castle) and the Royal Palace of Naples.

The good news is that the Historic Center of Naples is right beside the cruise port and is within walking distance from your cruise ship.

3. Visit the Ruins of Pompeii

Just south of Naples on Italy’s coastline, below Mount Vesuvius, sits the ancient town of Pompeii. Pompeii is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the most significant archaeological sites in the world.

A violent eruption of Mount Vesuvius covered the Roman city of Pompeii with 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of volcanic ash.

This ash actually preserved the city and, as a result, offers visitors a one-of-a-kind snapshot of ancient Roman life.

Capri is a beautiful island in the bay of Naples, just south of Naples city. It’s an incredibly scenic island, its coastline made up of rugged cliffs and secluded caves, including the famous Blue Grotto cave, which is illuminated by cracks in the cave walls.

Perched on Piazza Museo Square is the National Archaeological Museum (Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli in Italian).

The museum is impressive to look at, originally built in 1585 as cavalry barracks before eventually being converted into both a museum and palace in the 19th century.

The National Archaeological Museum is one of the most important museums in the world, housing one of the largest collections of Roman artifacts.

6. Amalfi Coast

At the southern tip of Italy’s Sorrentine Peninsula, you can find the Amalfi Coast, a 50-kilometer (31-mile) stretch of picturesque coastline characterized by colorful cliff-side villages and secluded beaches.

From Naples, it’s a 1.5-hour taxi drive south to the town of Amalfi.

7. Castel Nuovo

Perched on the edge of Naples city is a medieval castle that overlooks Naples Cruise Port.

Castel Nuovo, also called Maschio Angioino, was built in 1279 and is one of the most iconic landmarks in the city.

It can be found just in front of Piazza Municipio, a large square.

The castle has five round towers, which are connected by sturdy castle walls. The entrance is a beautiful marble triumphal arch.

The castle is open 7 days a week, and it costs €6 per entrance ticket.

8. Eat Pizza

Getting From Naples Airport to the Cruise Port

Naples International Airport is located just north of the city center. The easiest way to journey between Naples Cruise Port and the airport is via taxi.

A typical taxi ride will take around half an hour, however, do note that the traffic can get very congested when journeying through the city center and so it could take longer than this.

Another way to journey from the airport to the Naples port cruise terminal is via bus.

The Naples Alibus Airport shuttle bus journeys to Naples Molo Beverello Port which is where the cruise port is located.

Tickets cost €5 per person. Buses are available roughly every 20 minutes.

Need your advice as there’s so much information and my mind has just overdrive!

We definitely want to visit the following:

Pompeii and Vesuvius - thinking doing this with a tour as less hassle getting the train to and from site and from one site to another. I might be wrong so your insight please.

Sorrento , Positano and possibly Capri - we will take ferry

Amalfi Coast - we will take the train.

We also thinking of going to Posillipo and chill by the beach.

Does this sound manageable? Please advice.

You'll be in a nice, central location that will make touring easy.

The tour to Pompei and Vesuvio would certainly be easier, a big benefit to be sure. On the other hand, it will cost more and they decide how much time you get in each place, so that's the tradeoff. It will be beastly hot and very crowded at that time of year, which may make you lean more towards spending the extra money for ease.

TravelMar is the primary ferry operator along the coast. Their Concordia dock in Salerno is an easy walk from the train station.

While I know it's not easy to get an entire family up and out the door early in the morning, you'll be grateful you did for the Amalfi day. I would aim for a train that would allow you to be on the first ferry from Salerno, at 8:40 AM.

Or you could reverse the direction and take a ferry from Naples in the morning to Positano , then work your way long the coast ending in Salerno for the train back.

That’s a lot to do in five days hope your not overloading yourselves and missing the best that Napoli has to offer

Yes that’s the main reason why we are leaning more towards tour for Pompeii but will make a definite decision nearer the time.

If we do decide to do it ourselves, what’s the best way to do it? And is it easy to go from one site to another? How far advanced to they release the tickets for both sites?

It's easy to get between Pompei and Vesuvio using the public EAV bus, getting to Vesuvio is the issue.

There is a private bus service from Ercolano to Vesuvio also, so that's an option.

Given that you're trying to combine this with Pompei you'd need to shoot for either first thing in the morning, or later in the afternoon.

If you go to Vesuvio in the morning, the more direct route would be the Circumvesuviana train from Naples to Ercolano Scavi (Naples-Poggimarino line), then the Vesuvio Express private bus service from there to Vesuvio and back, followed by the Circumvesuviana to Pompei (Naples- Sorrento line).

If you go to Vesuvio toward the end of the day, you'd take the Circumvesuviana to Pompei (Naples-Sorrento line), then when you're ready the EAV bus to Vesuvio, then back to Pompei for the train back to Naples.

Note that Vesuvio Express offers service from Naples but it returns you to Naples, there is no option for going elsewhere UNLESS you forgo the already paid for return to Naples and take the EAV bus from Vesuvio to Pompei. This is the most efficient, but more expensive way to do it.

I just rethought that last bit, given that there are four of you. It might cost about the same 40 euro to simply take a taxi one way to Vesuvio, then the EAV bus on from there. There is no fixed fare for a one-way trip to Vesuvio, but they get 100 euro for round trip with a two hour wait. You might be able to talk one into 40 euros for one way and no waiting time.

Port Valencia cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Valencia, Spain. Valencia is a major Mediterranean port city in eastern Spain, located close to the mouth of Tura River. The city is the capital of the autonomous Valencian Community (Spain's 4th most populous autonomous - after Andalusia, Catalonia and Madrid) and Spain's 3rd-largest city by population (around 1,6 million, metro around 2,5 million) - following Madrid and Barcelona .

Port Valencia (locode ESVLC) is currently ranked Europe's 5th-largest and Mediterranean's busiest containership port.

The city's best-known tourist attractions include two gates (from the 14th-century city walls), a Gothic cathedral (13th-15th centuries), Lonja de la Seda (14th-century silk exchange building), Castillo de Peniscola (14th-century castle), fine arts museum. The settlement was founded by the Greeks and later occupied by Carthaginians, Romans, Visigoths, Arabs.

Valencia is best-known for its involvement in every Spanish war during the 19th-20th centuries. During the Spanish Civil War (1938-39), the Republican forces fled to Valencia after Catalonia's fall.

Port Valencia

The seaport is Europe's 5th and Mediterranean's largest. The amount on annually handled cargo shipping volumes is around 55 million tons (cargoes) and over 4,2 million (TEU-containers). It annually handles 7500+ vessels. The annual number of handled passengers (ferry and cruise) is around 0,5 million. The port is also a major employer (with over 15,000 employees) and generates over half of the country's GDP.

Port's history dates back from 1483 AD, when King Ferdinand II of Aragon (1452-1516) granted permission for building a wooden bridge (named Pont de Fusta). Followed numerous construction projects, but mainly due to Turia River floodings the port remained unsuccessful. With the increase in shipping traffic over the years, in 1679 King Charles II of Spain (1661-1700) granted the port trading privileges with other kingdoms and states. In 1791, King Joseph I (1768-1844, brother of Napoleon Bonaparte) granted the port trading privileges with the Americas. Then Valencia became Spain's 6th maritime province.

In 2017, the port was visited by Silk Road International (SICO), one of China's most important non-governmental organizations promoting commercial, economic and cultural relations with other countries. SICO studied the possibility of opening its Mediterranean headquarters in the city.

Until November 2017, the port's total (direct) cargo shipping volume with China was 6,48 million tons (3,18% increase over 2016). The container ship cargo volume with China was 532,000 TEUs / containers (4,87% increase).

As of 2018, the seaport's traffic with China is 48%, making the country its main commercial partner. Port Valencian currently is linked with 80 Asian ports, the largest of which are Shanghai , Ningbo, Yantian, Qingdao , Xiamen , Tianjin , Hong Kong , Shekou-Shenzhen , Chiwan, Nansha-Guangzhou .

Valencia Port Authority (APV) manages a total of 3 seaports: Valencia, plus two satellite ports - Sagunto and Gandia. All are on the Mediterranean Sea (Spain's eastern coastline), along an 80 km / 50 mi stretch of the coast. The port has a total quay length 12 km ( 7,5 mi) and total storage area 1,2 km2 (0,5 mi2).

Port Sagunto has around 10% of valencia's total annual cargo shipping traffic capacity and specializes in LNG (liquefied natural gas), as well as iron and steel products. Over 3 million tons of LNG are shipped annually to supply the nearby regasification plant. Around 2/3 of the port's traffic is iron and steel products. The other 1/3 are fertilizers, construction materials, timber.

Port Gandia has around 1,5% of Valencia's total annual cargo shipping traffic and specializes in forestry products export and import (timber, reels, pulp and paper, furniture).

In 2018, Port Valencia surpassed Port Barcelona in terms of total handled vehicle units. Port's all car terminals (including those at Sagunto and Gandia) handled 818,225 vehicles (3,17% increase over 2017). Barcelona's volume was 809,158 (3,26% decrease). Spain's total vehicle shipping traffic was 3,395338 million units (-2,55% over 2017's 3,484212 units). Spain's other major vehicle ports (handled units in 2018) are Santander (488,144), Vigo (451,111), Pasajes (254,673) and Tarragona (194,958).

In 2020, the Spanish passenger shipping company BALEARIA launched an LNG-bunkering facility (liquefied natural gas) at Port Valencia. The new facility uses MTTS (Multi Truck to Ship) bunkering system that enables several gas trucks to simultaneously bunker (refuel) the berthed ferries . The equipment was manufactured by Kosan Crisplant (Denmark). The bunkering speed ranges between 80-120 m3 LNG per hour. The first LNG-fueled ship here was Hypatia de Alejandria with crossings between Valencia- Ibiza - Palma de Mallorca .

On July 2, 2020, BALEARIA submitted a tender bid (the only one) for a new passenger terminal construction and operation under concession. The new terminal is located at Muelle Perfecto Palacio de la Fuente Dock (fka Muelle Espigon Turia Norte Dock), in the area of a former shipyard (Union Naval de Valencia) sized ~100,000 m2 (~0,04 mi2). The concession rights for the new facility are for 35 years, extendable to max 50 years.

• The new facility (Valencia Terminal Europa) will serve cruise ships, regularly scheduled ferries (linking daily to the Balearic Islands and Algeria) and RoRo ships (wheeled cargo and car carriers). The terminal will have 4 berths (minimum), at least one of which will have capacity to serve world's largest cruise liners (max LOA length 360 m / 1181 ft) and one berth for ships with max LOA length 250 m (820 ft).
• All berths will have shorepower supply capabilities . The cruise terminal will have capacity to handle two ships simultaneously (1x homeported, 1x transitting) and two cruiseferries (RoPax ships) .
• All the electrical energy used at the new facility will be produced at the terminal and of renewable origin (photovoltaic, wind, hydrogen, biofuel).

The new BALEARIA Terminal has estimated annual capacity ~370,000 passengers (the first 5 years / 2023-2028) and ~1 million passengers in the following years (projected annual growth ~2%). BALEARIA estimated that during the terminal's concession, the Port Authority will collect ~EUR 70 million (~USD 83M) from port taxes, tourists and goods.

In mid-November 2020, GPH-Global Ports Holding (via its partnership with Balearia Group) won a 35-year concession (2021 through 2056, plus an optional 15-year extension) for Valencia Cruise Port. By the contract, GPH operates and manages the port's cruise and ferry operations while BALEARIA will build two new passenger terminals as part of a EUR 31 million (~USD 37M) port infrastructure investments, including both terminals, ferry piers, outdoor car parking, retail shops, food-beverage facilities. BALEARIA's projects in Port Valencia are planned for completion in 2023-Q1. In 2019, the cruise port handled 203 ship calls and ~435,000 tourists.

Due to the COVID crisis, for FY2020 Port Valencia reported ~EUR 56 million (~USD 67M) in lost revenues estimated by not-handled passengers (EUR 145,5 pp). According to the report, the port's cruise business supports 637 local jobs. In FY2017 were handled 383,000 cruise ship tourists.

In the period 2008-2019, the port's business grew by 42% (from 52 million to 74M tonnes), CO2 emissions (per tonne managed) dropped by 30% (from 3,19 to 2,23 kg), with planned zero emissions in port by 2030.

In early-December 2021, were announced plans for Valenciaport to become Europe's first seaport using hydrogen technologies for reducing greenhouse gases/CO2 emissions.

• The H2PORTS project (budgeted EUR 4+ million / ~USD 4,5M) is a partnership between Valencia Port Authority and Fundacion Valenciaport. The project is funded by the FCH-JU program (Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking) which finances R&D (research and development) and Demonstration projects on this environment-friendly (decarburization) technology. By the project will be prepared prototypes to be used for testing the new fuel-cell technology.
• The H2PORTS initiative also involves Centro Nacional del Hidrogeno (research institute in Ciudad Real), as well as the companies MSC Terminal Valencia (port operator), Grupo Grimaldi (ferries), Hyster-Yale Group (lift trucks manufacturer), Distretto Atena Future Technology (Distretto Alta Tecnologia Energia Ambiente/Naples Italy), Ballard Power Systems Europe (Hobro Denmark-based hydrogen fuel cells producer), Enagas (Madrid Spain-based energy company).
• By the H2PORTS project, in 2022 Valenciaport installed a mobile station (for hydrogen supply) served by a Reach Stacker (energy-powered vehicle) and a 4x4 tractor (fitted with a fuel cell system).

In early-January 2022, the Port Authority announced a EUR 1,98 billion (~USD 2,25B) investment plan through 2025. The plan includes EUR 27,4M (~USD 31,1M) for a new passenger terminal, EUR 60+M for alternative energy projects (electrical substation, PV solar cell panels, wind power), as well as infrastructure projects (railway access, port deepening/dredging, etc).

By the October 2022-approved EUR 17+ million project, the Port installed 10773 rooftop solar panels (on Grimaldi Terminal's roof/surface area 27,700 m2 / 298,160 ft2) with annual capacity ~8380 MWh (~11% of the Port's electrical power consumption).

On November 10, 2022, APV approved the award to BALEARIA for the construction/operation of the new passenger terminal. BALEARIA's investment exceeds EUR 37M, while APV's is EUR 61,8M (to total ~EUR 99 million). The refurbishment works on the existing docks (at the old shipyard) included the adaptation of all cargo berths (at Espigon del Turia/Muelle Perfecto Palacio, Muelle Grada Quay and Muelle Fondo Quay).

Valencia cruise terminal

On March 4, 2020, PAV (Port Authority of Valencia) put out to tender the new passenger terminal (construction and operation) concession. The new cruise and ferry passenger terminal covers land area approx 100,000 m2 (~0,04 mi2) and is located between Muelle de Poniente Pier and Muelle Perfecto Palacio de la Fuente/fka Espigon del Turia North Pier. The area was previously occupied by a container terminal operated by Union Naval Valencia SA since the 1970s. The 35-year concession is extendable for max 50 years. The deadline for submitting the tender offers was April 17, 2020.

The new passenger terminal will serve cruise ships, regular passenger ferries (linking to the Balearic Islands and Algeria) and Ro-Ro vessels (transporting wheeled cargoes). The terminal is planned with at least 4 berths, including at least one with LOA length 360 m (1181 ft) and the shortest to be with min LOA length 250 m (820 ft). All berths will be fitted with shoreside power supply . The terminal must have capacity to handle (dock) simultaneously two cruise ships (one homeported, one transiting) plus two ferries.

As amenities, the new facility (Valencia Terminal Europa) will have entrance hall, waiting area, luggage storage, cruise ship check-in area, WiFI Internet, security control (X-ray and metal detection points, CCTV cameras), spaces for Customs clearance and police forces, public restrooms, boarding bridges, tourist office, crew lounge, PAV office, warehouses, VIP area, shopping area, vending machines, ATMs, car rental kiosks, prayer room, accessibility for passengers with reduced mobility, short-stay car parking (min 100 lots), bus parking (min 10 lots), taxi rank, kids playground, restaurant, rooftop solar powerplant (PV/photovoltaic system of electricity-generating panels).
