How Much Does a Bali Trip Cost? (Prices for 2024/2025)

When considering a Bali trip, you may want to know how much it would cost. Is it expensive?

Here is a breakdown of how much it costs for flights, hotels, transportation, sightseeing, food, and activities.

Is Bali Expensive?

  • Typical Costs for 1 Day, 1 Week, and 1 Month
  • Cost of International Flights to Bali
  • Cost of Eating and Drinking
  • The Cost of Transportation
  • Cost of Attractions/Activities
  • Tips for Saving Money

Bali is not an expensive destination compared to other vacation spots in Southeast Asia .

  • A private customized tour of the main attractions/activities in the south costs around US$120/person/day (2–4 people)*
  • A private volcano and hot spring tour or a rainforest discovery tour costs around US$200/person/day (2–4 people)*

* Private guide, car, and driver, attraction tickets, activities, and lunch included

It is a cost-effective island for a tour partly because most of the best beaches, surfing beaches, scenic terraced rice fields, and sightseeing landmarks are in the central and eastern parts of the island within about an hour from the airport and main hotel locations by private vehicle at times of low traffic, so transportation costs and trip lengths are kept low.

Some of the best snorkeling/diving areas are also within this 1-hour driving radius . Some others of the best beaches, diving areas, terraced fields and waterfalls/sightseeing/hiking areas are in the northern and eastern parts of Bali within an hour and half to two hours travel time from the airport.

Moreover, Bali can suit all kinds of budgets, from economical to luxury . However, Bali is an expat enclave and has heavy tourism. So, this drives the prices up, but in the off season (November to March except during the major holidays), you can get better prices.

With Asia Highlights , you enjoy 100% refund of any payments made to China Highlights prior to 3 weeks before departure ( detail⇒ ).

Typical Costs for 1 Week in Bali

Prices are going up, but Bali remains very good value compared to Western countries.

  • For a comfortable private tour (2–4 people) : About 160–220 USD per day per person is typical with private guide, 4- or 5-star hotels, nice meals, and private transfers included. For this standard of vacation in the US, the average price is 500+ USD.

The typical cost for a person for a week in Bali is from 1,000 USD.

For more on planning a week's holiday, see How to Plan a Trip to Bali .

Comparison with Thailand

Similar to Bali, Thailand is also affordable for all budget levels. 2–3 plane journeys are generally needed for a classic Thailand tour from north to south (Chiang Mai, Bangkok, and Phuket or Koh Samui), which makes traveling in Thailand slightly costlier than in Bali by 20–30 USD per person per day. A 10-Day Private Classic Thailand Tour costs around 2,000 USD per person.

The Cost of International Flights to Bali

The only international airport in Bali is Denpasar International Airport (DPS). The cheapest months to visit are October to March (rainy season). Airline prices from the middle of December to early January are high for the Christmas and New Year season. The most expensive months are from April to September, especially the Easter vacation period and summer holiday season (June to August).

Airline Ticket Prices from Major Cities to Bali (round trip):

  • New York , United States: From 1,500 USD . Flying to Bali from New York requires at least one stopover.
  • Sydney , Australia: From 800 USD. Flying out of Sydney can be non-stop.
  • London , England: From 900 USD. Flying out of London requires at least one stop.

Cost of Accommodations in Bali

Here are the approximate costs for a standard 2-person room in Bali for 2024. This is for reference only (prices fluctuate quickly due to various uncertainties related to changes in the epidemic situation):

* Low season : November to March except for around Christmas and New Year

* High season : April to September, Christmas and New Year season

During the busy months/weeks, we recommend you plan and book your accommodations well in advance.

Hotels are included in our itineraries and we can generally secure favorable prices. We recommend suitable hotels based on your budget, preferred location, room specification (e.g. no-smoking), and other requirements. Feel free to contact us .

The Cost of Eating and Drinking in Bali

  • Budget : A meal in a cheap local-style restaurant can be as low as 25,000 IDR (1.70 USD or 1.70 EUR).
  • Mid-range : A mid-range restaurant meal for two people with three courses costs about 21 USD or 21 EUR.

For our recommendations for food to try in Bali, tips on staying healthy, and some phrases to use in restaurants, see The 10 Best Bali Foods and Dishes You Absolutely Have to Try .

The Cost of Transportation in Bali

  • Taxi: The price of a taxi in Bali depends on several factors. The taxi starting price is about 0.47 USD (7,000 IDR). For each additional 1 km you have to pay about 0.50 USD (7,500 IDR).

Traveling around Bali is usually by taxi or private transfer. It generally takes no more than 2 hours of driving from Ubud in central Bali to the most southerly beaches.

Public buses and scoooter/bike hire are obviously a lot less efficient, convenient, and comfortable. While you could save most of your transport costs, it would mean less time at the attractions and hence less value-for-money on your tour time, so we don't recommend them generally.

The Cost of Attractions/Activities in Bali

Beaches : Public beaches are free, but you may need to pay to enter a private beach. See Best Beaches in Bali: How to Choose the Right One for Your Trip .

Rice terraces : The less popular rice terraces are generally free to visit. The most popular ones such as Jatiluwih and Tegallalang have entrance fees of about 4 or 5 dollars for tourists. The ticket sales help locls to cultivate the land and build concrete paths for better access to the rice fields. See The Top Bali Rice Terraces: Which to Visit .

Tips for Saving Money in Bali

  • Traveling during shoulder/low season (November to March helps to reduce airfare and touring costs substantially.
  • Use bicycle/scooter hire. Take the public buses. Share taxi rides with others.
  • The biggest tourist areas around Denpasar, on the southern and southeastern coasts, and around Ubud are the most expensive touring areas. For lower prices, you can go to the north coast, and the least expensive and least touristy area is western Bali.
  • Eat at small, local, inexpensive restaurants called warungs for authentic and cheap Balinese food.
  • Shop at fresh food markets for fruits and vegetables instead of supermarkets.

Cost of Traveling to Bali

How much does it cost to visit bali, budget | mid-range | affordable luxury | luxury & ultra luxury, bali holiday – always great value for money.

Affordability is sometimes the most influential factor in selecting an overseas destination. That’ s why the topic of how much does it cost to visit Bali is often asked.

Everything is available. Street food for USD 1 and fine dinging for USD100+. You can stay for USD 10 per night in a decent room, or spend a few thousand dollars in one of the ultra luxury resorts, or spend even more in a villa estate.

Most common questions:

  • “Bali travel cost 2023”
  • “Average expenses for a trip to Bali?”
  • “Bali trip budget and expenses?”
  • “How much money for a week in Bali?”
  • “Bali vacation cost per person?”

Costs when Traveling on a Budget & Backpacking

Accommodation prices – traveling on a budget & backpacking in bali (average usd 10-25 per night).

For as little as US$10-15 you may get a room at a guest house, homestay, Losmen, or tiny hotel with no stars. It is possible to find even cheaper lodgings with bunk beds. If you’d like a private room with a bathroom and air conditioning, though, you may locate a good hotel for less than US$20 a night. Young  backpackers and budget travelers still flock to Bali, and they tend to head to the southern areas (Kuta, Bukit, and Canggu) and in the east (Padangbai) because of the abundance of cheap hotels and eateries there.

In general, a backpacker should be able to get by for  USD$35 a day , which covers bare-bones lodging, three meals at US$3 each, and a few drinks. You may rent a scooter for around US$4 per day. However, the cost of alcoholic beverages and social gatherings would quickly deplete any such funds.

Don’t expect to be able to rent a villa for these prices.

Rooms are usually priced per room and not per person, unless you choose a dorm or bunk-bed.

Food & Drinks Budget & Backpacking (Average USD 1-3 per meal)

All across Bali, you’ll find traditional warungs (small eateries), ocal restaurants, often displaying the food where you can choose a selection of different meat, fish and vegetable dishes. It’s good, and it’s also very fresh.

The street food carts (kaki lima) are serving amazing food. such as the famous Soto, meat ball soup, Nasi Goreng,, Martabak, Fried Fish, and of course Sate.

The sanitation standards might not be always “up to par”. But in general one can say, that food is fresh, particularly if you choose vendors that you see are busy. It’s simple to see whether the food, is up to your standards since they’re all out in the open.

This is also where the majority of the locals go to eat during their lunch periods and after work. All Indonesians, including the Balinese, have an insatiable appetite. They like spending time together eating at nice restaurants.

You can get a softdrink at these places for USD 0.6 to 1. Fresh coconot should be USD 1 to 1.5.

Costs when Traveling on a “mid-range” budget

Mid-range accommodation prices – (average usd 30-60 per night per room).

The vast majority of Bali’s hotels are moderately priced 3-star establishments . Traditionally, these hotels have been on the smaller side and run by families. Meanwhile, up to 100-room hotels from major chains like Swissbel and Accor and local brands like Grandmas and Aston are entering the market. As more domestic and Chinese visitors come, these businesses will thrive and expand.

These hotels have been thoroughly inspected for cleanliness and comfort, and they often provide a good breakfast at a low price. Most of them are located somewhat farther from the shore, making the use of a scooter or a lengthy walk to the beach necessary.

Depending on the location, you might get a small private villa for that price, particularly if you share a 2 or 3 bedroom villa with more people. The paying 40-60USD per room is enough to get a nice place already.

Mid-Range (Average USD 3-7 per meal)

In this category, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of eateries across Bali. The majority of visitors as well as an increasing number of middle class Balinese eat there. These locations might also even be locally run”warung” but a little bit more geared to serve also foreigners and cost a little bit more, than the warung, that are mostly frequented by the local population.

But there are plenty of restaurants that offer you a decent meal at that price level,

Middle-range restaurants may be slightly more costly in tourist hot spots such as Canggu and Seminyak for example. Additionally, the costs in the hotel’s restaurants are generally 50–100% higher than stand-alone restaurants in the neighborhood.

Costs for Affordable Luxury Traveling in Bali

Accommodation cost – affordable luxury (average usd 70-150 per night).

Depending on the location and proximity to the beach, this category ranges from three up to even five stars. Since also these hotels often provide different room categories, you could get very different experiences and pay different prices in the same hotel. This segment is often booked by families and individual travelers (single, couples and groups) who have grown out of their backpacker phase.

Expect well-appointed rooms, at least one restaurant, pool, nice gardens, good location, excellent service, tasty breakfast, and spacious rooms.

At that price range, when you travel with 4 or more people, you can get already very nice serviced villas & vacation rentals with private pools.

Affordable Luxury in restaurants (Average USD 10–25 per meal)

Numerous restaurants in this category are found in 4 to even 5 star resorts and hotels. They mostly serve also cocktails and have a more extensive wine lists.

Imported Alcohol is generally quite expensive because of import taxes. But a decent glass of French or Italian wine might cost you USD 6 – 10.

Costs for Luxury & Ultra Luxury Traveling in Bali

Accommodation cost: luxury & high-end (average usd 150-350 per night – the sky is the limit in certain ultra luxury and villa resorts).

One of a kind, unmatched excellence. When compared to other popular tourist destinations, Bali’s luxury offerings are surprisingly affordable. It’s no exaggeration to say that Bali is home to some of the top hotels in Asia, if not the world. The island’s warm friendliness permeates every aspect of the service, and the island’s artistic and cultural traditions inform the design of the accommodations.

Bali is home to facilities from some of the most prestigious hotel groups in the world, and these establishments do not disappoint in terms of beauty or quality. Balinese and regional firms have built and overseen a number of world-class hotels and resorts.

Cost of drinks & alcohol in bali.

Water and soft drinks are inexpensive. Beer and juices are acceptable. Wine and liquor may be rather pricey (due to local taxes). Green juices and smoothies are becoming a little more pricey. Soft drink costs at regular restaurants aren’t all that much more than they are in convenience stores. However, many hotels with stars still mark up significantly. In a convenience store, a 1.5-liter bottle of water will run you about 50 cents.

Generally speaking, imported beers are always much more expensive than  domestic beers  like Corona or San Miguel beer versus Bintang beer.

Average price at a bar or restaurant, *excluding hotels:

  • Soft Drinks such as coke, sprite (Average US75¢-$1 per bottle)
  • Beer (Average US$2-4 per bottle)
  • Local wine (Average US$3-5 per glass)
  • Imported wine (Average US$5-10 per glass)
  • Cocktails (Average US$5-10 per glass)
  • Spirits (Average US$4-10 per glass)
  • Expensive Imported Whiskeys, Tequilas, Vodkas, Cognacs etc can cost up to USD 30 per drink

Transportation Cost in Bali

Depending on where you stay and how far you need to travel to get to the beach, shops or restaurants, the transportation costs per day can, of course, vary quite a bit. Choosing the location for your accommodation and therefore the method of transportation should be your main concern when planning your holiday since Bali is not very “pedestrian-friendly” due to lack of sidewalks, the heat and far distances.

Bicycle Rental (Average US$2-4 per day)

Not very common but a good way to get around in Ubud, Canggu and the more remote areas

Scooter/ Motorbikes Rental (Average US$ 5-7 per day)

Rent a scooter including helmet per day. Countless rental places all over Bali. Usually, without any insurance!

Premium and properly serviced Scooters/ Motorbikes (Average US$ 10-25 per day)

Special scooter with a bigger seat and large compartment to keep your belongings safe. Lexi, NMax, PCX, or Vespa with insurance, well maintained with drop and pick-up service to your hotel.

Best and most reliable Scooter Rental Service in Bali

Scooter Taxi/ Ojek (Average US$ 3-5/ trip) ( not via apps)

Managed by the local community, these guys hang around mostly during evenings and night near the pubs and clubs since many areas ban the app-driven transportation services like Go-Jek, Grab, Uber, etc. You can recognize them wearing a west with a number on it (some of them don’t). You would have to bargain with them, but they usually charge something between per trip if it’s not too far.

App driven scooter taxis (Average US$1-3 per trip)  are significantly cheaper. Most visitors use those services twice a day

APPS: GOJEK & GRAB

Hiring a car with driver half and full day (Average US$20-60)

It is the most convenient way if you wish to explore the island and go for day trips. 8-10 hours rental, including gasoline and driver, will cost you anything between US$40-60, depending on the condition of the car. The driver is registered, pays insurance and taxes etc.

Rent your Car with Driver here online

Taxi cars (Average ca. US$5-10 per trip, 20-30 minutes)

The cars that are managed by the local communities (you can’t miss them, since they continuously say “transport, transport”) charge roughly twice what the standard taxi and app-driven services would charge. Bluebird, Grabcar, Go-car (from Go-Jek app) are not expensive. An average trip from Seminyak to Kuta would cost you roughly USD seven if you use those taxi services.

Good to know when renting a hotel room in Bali

Usually in Bali, you pay for the hotel room and not per person. Single rooms rarely exist. Therefore traveling as a couple costs almost as much as traveling solo, excluding the breakfast of course. Expect to pay during mid and low season 30%-50% less for rooms and villas than during high season (Easter Holidays, July until mid September, Christmas and New Years, Chinese New Years and end of Ramadan – Idul Fitri).

One of the most important determinants of hotel and resort prices is location. In Bali, it is common for businesses (particularly accommodation and restaurants) to add up to 22% (11% VAT and 5-11% service charge) to the bill. Because wages in Indonesia are relatively low, service charges are usually distributed equally among staff members. Make sue the hotel and villas quote you the price including all extra fees.

Costs for Private Villas in Bali

In Bali, the private villa market has expanded dramatically in the last five years. Hundreds of properties have appeared on the market; some are run professionally, while others are not. These properties come in all sizes and shapes, and the most important factor is location.

The main difference between staying in a hotel and staying in a villa is that you can get villas with up to 8 bedrooms, which is sometimes like renting your own small hotel with staff. If you are traveling in a group or with a family, renting a luxury villa is often less expensive per room per night than renting a few hotel rooms, making this segment appealing if you are traveling with friends or family.

Private villas are difficult to categorize, but you might be surprised at how affordable a luxurious holiday can be. Those properties are almost never near the beach or restaurants, requiring some form of transportation. However, there are many well-located villas in Seminyak, Kerobokan, and Canggu.

Some villas have a minimum stay, especially during peak season, and websites like Airbnb charge a cleaning or booking fee. Several villa management companies offer villas, but you can also find those properties on OTAs such as booking.com, airbnb.com, and so on.

Average Prices for Villas:

A private one-bedroom villa with a small pool starts at US$100-150. While true luxury is likely to start around US$200 per night – per room available.

These villas are fully serviced and equipped with all amenities. The more luxurious ones include a chef and a team to look after you during the day. The more rooms a villa has, the less it costs per night per room. We recommend that you look through the listings and get inspired.

The most luxurious, with 6-8 bedrooms, can cost up to USD3,000-4,000 per night. But then you get a gym, a game room, incredible pool, amazing food, and possibly even a private tennis court, as well as your own chauffeur and car.

As everywhere else in the world…this depends 😉

The bigger villas (four to seven bedrooms) are often rented out for weddings. Bali is a popular destination for weddings, and there are a number of organizers that can handle all the details so that the newlyweds and their guests may have the perfect ceremony and reception.

How much does a trip to Bali cost?

Faraway Worlds

Faraway Worlds

  • Bali travel budget

If you’re planning on travelling to Bali, you’re probably wondering how much you need to budget for your trip. While your travel costs will depend on your travel style, generally speaking Bali is perfect for a budget trip.

Accommodation costs are generally affordable and food and drinks are very cheap. Many of Bali’s best attractions are very affordable or even free and, while some activities could set you back a fair amount, there’s plenty to do at lower price points too.

How much should I budget for a trip to Bali?

A reasonable budget for two for a week in Bali is around IDR 17,013,376 .

The above cost is based on staying in good, mid-range accommodation and having a few meals out per week, while preparing some yourself . It makes allowances for a couple of sightseeing activities, but doesn’t take into account expensive activities like adventure sports or private tours.

Generally speaking, the longer you travel, the cheaper it costs per day, while fly-in, fly-out trips can be more expensive.

How much does accommodation cost?

You can expect to spend between IDR 910,000-IDR 1,800,000 a night, per couple, on accommodation in Bali. This will get you a private room with your own bathroom in a 3-4-star hotel or apartment rental.

Hostels are, of course, cheaper, but a private room with a shared bathroom will still cost around IDR 400,000 per night. A bed in a dorm room also averages around IDR 150,000 per night, per person, although there are definitely cheaper options out there.

Accommodation prices in Bali are rising again as the tourism industry recovers, however you may still be able to find some good deals at the moment. While accommodation in Bali isn't as cheap as some Asian countries, the value is generally very good and you can have a five-star experience on a mid-range budget. There are also many luxury options that are can reach far beyond the above prices.

Read our guide on where to stay in Bali to find the best place to base yourself during your visit.

How much should I budget for food and drinks in Bali?

Budget to spend around IDR 4,411,400 for two for a week in Bali. This assumes you’re cooking some of the time and drinking some alcohol.

If you enjoy eating out, you can expect to pay around IDR 643,000 for a nice dinner for two, including an alcoholic drink. A meal at a pub is likely to be around IDR 220,000 for two, with cheaper meals available (especially for lunch) for around IDR 57,000 each.

Assuming that you’ll be eating out some of the time, budget at least IDR 76,600 a week for groceries. If you enjoy a few drinks, you’ll need to increase this amount – beer costs around IDR 28,000 for a 500ml bottle and good bottle of wine is around IDR 326,000 , from a shop, although there are cheaper options available. Milk typically costs around IDR 23,000 for a two-litre bottle and you can expect to pay around IDR 38,600 for a cappuccino from a local café.

How much does it cost to get around Bali?

Getting around Bali is easiest with a scooter. Transport costs fluctuate depending how much you travel, but budgeting around IDR 793,000 for two per week is a good starting point. This should allow you to hire a couple of scooters. If you’re planning on doing any tours or using hop-on hop-off buses, you’ll need to up your budget a bit.

Taking taxis or hiring a driver with a car are also good options for getting around Bali, particularly if you don't want to deal with the chaotic traffic or are travelling in a larger group.

What should I expect to spend on activities?

A lot of the best things to do in Bali are free. However, there definitely are some attractions that cost money – entry fees to a museum or an art gallery are usually around IDR 144,000 - IDR 573,000 per person. If you want to do organised day trips or join smaller tour groups to learn more about some of the sites, budget around IDR 1,100,000 per activity per person.

Here are some prices for popular activities and day trips in Bali:

Mount Batur sunrise trek - USD 50

Private day trip to Ubud Monkey Forest, the rice terraces and Tanah Lot - USD 50

Tour to watch the sunset at Uluwatu Temple - USD 40

Cooking class in a local village near Ubud - USD 30

Day trip to Nusa Penida island - USD 60

Bali is a beautiful destination to visit and is a great place for a cheap trip. Cooking your own meals, carefully selecting accommodation or limiting meals out will definitely help you to reduce your travel costs. Slow travel is another great way to help your budget to stretch further, while exploring a place in more depth.

Travelling through Bali is definitely possible on a budget – just pick your priorities and compromise on the rest or consider travelling in the off-season and avoiding school holidays to cut down on costs. And, if you’re on the luxury end of the scale or wanting to treat yourself, the sky’s the limit.

Bali Budget per Day – How much does a 13-Days Bali Vacation cost?

Updated: September 8, 2022

Indonesia , Asia , Travel Budget Guides

written by: Steph Kloeckener

Bali is a dream destination. This guide will show you how to explore Bali on a Budget.

Visiting Bali is a must if you want to see all that Asia has to offer. And while the island is not the cheapest destination, it is possible to explore Bali on a budget even if you want to stay in amazing accommodations. This Bali trip budget will tell you what your Bali budget per day will be like so you can plan an epic trip during which you can observe amazing sunsets at the beach, chase waterfalls, and explore temples.

Just like my budget guides about Vietnam and Sri Lanka , this Bali budget guide gives a general estimate of the costs based on my own spendings as well as some tips and recommendations. I wrote down every rupiah I spend because I might be a little freaky as I love knowing how much I spend while traveling.

The prices in this guide of Bali vacation costs are in Indonesian Rupiah and in Euro. The exchange rate as of September 2022 is as follows: 100.000 IDR is 6.70 EUR, 6.70 USD, 5.81 GBR, or 9.92 AUD.

Accommodation: 1.005K IDR / 64,68€

Your daily budget in Bali can be relatively small even if you decide to stay in more luxurious accommodations. However, those places right or near the beach tend to be a lot more expensive. So just look for a place a little bit further away from the ocean if you plan to rent a scooter while in Bali.

Just like in Bangkok, I decided to stay in hostels that allowed me to have my own personal space. Both hostels I stayed in were amazing with their capsule-style rooms and amenities, so I can only recommend them to you.

The hostel I stayed in while in Canggu was Kultur Umalas and the one in Ubud was G ypsy Lust Hostel . They are my favorite shared accommodations and I would stay there again if I want to explore Bali on a budget and if I want to meet fellow travelers.

Explore Gili T

Hostel Room

Canggu: 73,5K IDR – 85K IDR

Ubud: 110 IDR

Private Villa on Gili T

The night on Gili T is not listed as the accommodation was included in the costs of my Gili trip.

But if you do not mind splurging while there, I can only recommend the Kelapa Villas to you. The prices range from 1.410.000 IDR for a 1-bedroom villa to 7.740.000 IDR for a 7-bedroom villa.

Food & Drinks: 1.624K IDR / 104,52€

While exploring Bali I ate both local food and at those trendy instagrammable places. And my food budget admittedly was the largest part of my daily budget in Bali.

Cheapest Meal: 65K IDR

Most Expensive Meal: 175K IDR

Average Cost per Day: 125K IDR

Daily Budget in Bali: Food Prices

Bali Buda 128K

Kynd Community 175K

The local food is amazing and you will want to eat a lot of it. It is cheaper and perfect if you travel to Bali on a budget. But if you also want to see the expat side of Bali, you should check out other restaurants. There are several amazing international restaurants in Canggu and Ubud.

Transport: 525K IDR / 33,79€

Airport transport: 230k idr.

Upon arrival, I did not get a sim card right away and therefore I had to rely on the airport wifi to order my transport to Canggu. But the drivers kept canceling the trips as I never got their messages and was therefore unable to answer in any way. Eventually, I just thought ‘damn it’ and took a taxi that was way too expensive. The way back to the airport was the exact same route and it only cost me 53% of the price I paid upon my arrival in Bali.

So if you want to save money, I can only recommend getting a sim card at the airport. Just ensure that you get a tariff plan that works everywhere in Indonesia and that you can easily recharge.

Grab 525K IDR

Getting around in Canggu: 65K IDR

Canggu – Ubud Return Trip (0.5x): 460K IDR

Try to find someone that is willing to share a Grab with you if you decide to take one between Canggu and Ubud.

Scooter: 400K IDR / 25,74€

During my two weeks in Bali, I rented a scooter on 5 different days. Hereby, the price for a good and reliable scooter is usually between 60K and 70K a day and will therefore only be a small part of your daily budget in Bali. I saw offers for less, but from what I saw, those scooters did not look as safe. If you rent a scooter for less, you should check if the scooter is in a good condition and take pictures from all angles to avoid any potential issues and scams.

Scooter Rental: 340K IDR

Fuel: 50K IDR

Parking: 10K IDR

If you plan to stay in Bali for more than 14 days, it might be cheaper to rent a scooter for an entire month. Enquire about the price before you rent it and ask if you can potentially switch to a monthly rental plan after trying out the scooter for a day or two. That way you can be sure that the scooter is okay.

Traveling Bali on a Budget

If you know how to ride a scooter and do not mind driving on the left side of the road, a scooter is the best way to explore Bali. On some days I drove more than 100km and it was perfect. Using a scooter allowed me whenever I wanted to enjoy the view and to explore the picturesque rice fields .

Just keep in mind that no insurance will cover you if you do not have the correct motorbike license. A simple 45CC one will no suffice in Bali as all scooters have more power.

You can pay ‘a fine’ if the police stop you, but the moment you crash, you are screwed. Whether you decide to do so is up to you, but I wanted to give you all the important facts. Please be careful and have fun exploring Bali!

Entrance Fees: 250K IDR / 16,09€

Bali has many temples and waterfalls and visiting most of them costs a small fee.

Monkey Forest: 80K IDR

Tirta Empul Temple: 50K IDR

Banyu Wana Amertha Waterfalls : 30K IDR

Ulun Danu Beratan Temple: 50K IDR

Tirta Gangga Temple: 40K IDR

Bali Budget for Activities: 1.000.000 IDR / 64,36€

Gili t trip.

I booked a trip to Gili T and spend two days there. As it was a special photographer trip, I cannot recommend a specific company in case you want to book the trip as a package. However, the price of the transport to the ferry port, the ferry rides, and accommodation on Gili T should cost approximately the same. You can b ook the ferry ride to the Gili Islands on 12GoAsia. Alternatively, you can book it at the departure location, but the ferry can be full so it is best to buy your ride in advance.

Alternatively, you can book a group trip to Gili T. Hereby, you can choose between a day trip full of snorkeling or multi-day trips.

My Bali Trip Budget Recommendation:

If you do not mind splurging for a night and want a bit of luxury, the Gili Islands are perfect. There are many private villas with pools and everything for fair prices. The experience is worth it. The Gili Islands are a paradise.

Gili T

Sim Card: 180K / 11,58€

I ended up getting a rather large amount of data that is valid in all of Indonesia. Tell the salesperson what your plans are and they will recommend the best data plan. Keep in mind, that many phone tariffs are regional and that your Bali data plan might not be valid if you plan to visit the Gili Islands and Lombok.

It is a lot cheaper to get a local plan upon arrival than to buy a worldwide plan with your usual provider.

Additional Bali vacation costs

Washing: 59k idr / 11,58€, souvenirs & shopping: 405k idr / 26,06€.

Bali offers many amazing souvenirs and handmade things, so just add a certain amount of money to your Bali budget when you plan your Bali vacation cost. You are bound to find something that you will want to buy, so also consider leaving some space in your suitcase or backpack when traveling there.

For the number of money listed, I got three bracelets, two magnets, five sarongs, a bowl made of coconut, and fish food at Tirta Gangga.

Spendings that are not a part of my Bali trip budget

Pharmacy costs.

I decided not to include these costs in my Bali travel budget, as I hope that you will not be as dumb as I was. I managed to get a ‘Bali Kiss’ when I burned myself on a motorbike’s exhaust. And let me tell you, that getting what I needed at the pharmacy was not cheap when compared to other prices in Indonesia. However, the service I received at two different pharmacies was amazing.

Pharmacy #1: Gaze and tape – 161K IDR

Pharmacy #2: Gaze, disinfectant, and two waterproof bandaids – 102,3K IDR

Do yourself a favor and be careful when you get off a motorbike. And bring basic first aid utensils when visiting Bali.

My Bali budget per day

Daily Budget in Bali: 419K IDR / 26,97€

Bali Vacation Cost (13 days): 5.448.000 IDR / 350,62€

While more expensive than other Asian countries, it is possible to have a rather low Bali budget per day while staying in unique or luxurious accommodations. If you want to enjoy the local cuisine, you are bound to spend less than if you eat at international restaurants.

Being a solo budget traveler, this guide is really helpful as I am planning to visit Bali in the near future. Very well written.

It sounds like you made the most of your money and had an amazing adventure in Bali!

p.s. It’s pretty interesting that food and drink cost almost double what you paid for accommodation. It always seems to be the other way around when we travel here in Canada!

I really do not know why that’s the case, but the food > accommodation situation was my general experience in Asia. The food was always cheap by international standards, but still my highest expense

I keep track of my expenses just like you do – gives me great satisfaction somehow! Your guide was quite useful to gauge how much to budget – I want to visit Bali soon now! Tough about you getting burnt – hope it didn’t affect your trip much.

wohoo! I’m not the only expense tracker around here. Glad to hear that this guide is useful for you. 🙂 I’m a diver (that really wanted to dive) & wasn’t allowed to enter the ocean after the burn. Let’s just say it was not the highlight of my trip

This is a great and helpful post for those budget travelers. The plane tickets alone can be costly the best way to do it is to do backpacking around the neighboring country at once to make use of your big $$$ plane ticket.

The daily costs are low, which is good, but getting there and flying back will be a big expense, especially for someone like me who comes from the US.

Can’t wait to visit Bali! It’s definitely on my bucket list

Wow you managed to stick to a great budget without missing out on yummy food and amazing adventures! Bali is one of the cheapest places we have visited. We pre-booked a taxi from the airport which is another way to not pay too much at the airport 🙂

While Bali was still cheap by international standards, it was the most expensive place I’ve been to in Asia. Haha

I should have done the same, or gotten that wicked sim card right away. I absolutely overestimated how good the wifi connection at the airport would be. Oops

Why is Bali so affordable? A detailed look at the cost of visiting Bali in 2024 and tips

Why is Bali so cheap? Bali is cheap because of the low cost of living compared to Western countries and other tropical destinations.

Last Update: February 27, 2024

  • Backpacking

We have travelled extensively around Southeast Asia and spent a lot of time roaming around Bali, so we can now offer the most complete comparison. Why is Bali so Cheap? Well, Bali can be affordable for backpackers but also extremely costly for luxury seekers.

If you’ve done any research into visiting Bali, you’ve likely noticed it’s far more affordable than many other tropical destinations. Bus is really cheap to travel to Bali?

In this post, we’ll uncover the reasons behind Bali’s budget-friendly prices , from accommodation to dining and more. We’ll also take an in-depth look at real costs to help you plan your affordable getaway to Bali .

We explored Bali for over two months. Bali is cheap compared to other destinations. Bimba overlooking the hidden beach in Uluwatu

Why is Bali so cheap for holidays?

Bali is part of Indonesia, which has a much lower cost of living compared to Western nations. This results in cheap prices on hotels, villas, food, transportation, activities, and more being passed on to visitors.

Accommodation costs a fraction of what you’d pay elsewhere, thanks to low labour, construction, and land costs. Local food like nasi goreng and mie goreng is just a couple dollars at warungs. Things like surf lessons, yoga, and cultural workshops average $5-30. Scooter rentals are around $5 per day.

And the Indonesian Rupiah exchanges favourably to Western currencies , making your money stretch further. It’s the combination of lower wages, costs of living, and favourable exchange rates that make Bali such an affordable tropical destination.

Average cost of a Bali trip

How much does it really cost to visit Bali? With its range of options, you can spend as little or as much as you want.

Backpackers can get by on $20 USD per day , sticking to dorm rooms and cheap local eats. Luxury travellers will find five-star hotels, fine dining, and posh beach clubs.

For a comfortable mid-range trip , we’d budget around $70-100 USD per day as a couple, excluding flights. You can splurge on nicer hotels and activities without breaking the bank.

To give you an idea, here’s a rough breakdown of average costs:

  • Accommodation: $30-60 USD per night
  • Food: $5-15 USD per meal
  • Transportation: $5-10 USD per day
  • Activities: $10-50 USD each
  • Drinks: $2-10 USD each

A warung is a local restaurant that offers local sourced ingredients and traditional recipes. We ate in Warungs all time as was the best way to save money in Bali

Cost saving tips for Bali

Here are some of our top ways to visit Bali on a budget:

Choose mid-range accommodations  – You can find nice hotels and guesthouses for $30-60 per night, including breakfast.

  • Eat local cuisine  – Local warungs offer huge $2-3 meals. Western food costs more.
  • Rent a scooter  – Scooter rental starts around $5 per day, saving on taxis.
  • Skip the fancy drinks  – Drink local beer instead of $10 cocktails.
  • Visit free temples  – Entrance fees add up, but many temples are free.
  • Shop local markets  – Get fresh produce and souvenirs for way less.
  • Withdrawal large amount to reduce fees:  Bali is mostly on a cash basis; you need to withdraw in order to get food, visit places and general activities. Withdrawal as much as possible to reduce the cost of fees.

Don’t withdraw at the weekend:  Because the world exchanges are closed at the weekend, you will get charged more. Check the current exchange rate before withdrawal.

What is the best country for backpackers first time?

For first-time backpackers looking to start their adventures abroad, Thailand is often regarded as one of the best and safest countries to visit. But which are the other countries for first-timers backpackers? Read our guide!

Daily costs for living in Bali

We were attracted to Bali by the lush greenery, awesome lifestyle and of course reduce cost of living. This is one of the main reason why Digital Nomads decide to spend short or long periods in Bali. You can truly thrive on a budget here compared to other tropical destinations.

Renting a villa with a pool can cost under $800 per month . Scooters rent for $30-50 per month. Eating out for every meal is realistic on a modest budget.

To give you an idea, our typical monthly costs as a couple were:

  • Housing – $500
  • Scooter – $30
  • Food – $150
  • Entertainment – $100
  • Activities – $200

So, around $1,000 USD per month in total! Plus, the initial flight, of course.

For solo travellers or those sticking to a tight budget, $800 USD or less is very doable. The biggest cost is housing, with private villas being more pricey. By the way read our guide on how to find affordable villas in Bali, here!

Villa Medina Bali - One of the most luxurious accommodation in Bali

Why hotels are so affordable?

One of the biggest travel costs is accommodation. Yet, in Bali, you can snag a room at a nice hotel or guesthouse for $30-60 per night.

Construction and operating costs are far lower than in most nations. So hotels can charge less and still turn a profit.

Most hotels include a free breakfast, too. A filling morning meal would cost you $5-10 if dining out, so that’s an extra daily savings.

You can also find dorm beds for as low as $5 per night if you are willing to go barebones. But you may sacrifice comfort.

For a mid-range stay, we love boutique hotels like:

  • Desa Visesa Ubud – $60/night
  • The Samaya Seminyak – $150/night
  • Adiwana Jembawan Resort – $95/night

Luxury resorts in Bali can still cost several hundred per night. But far less than similar five-star properties elsewhere.

Cost of dining and drinking

Indonesian and Balinese food is quite cheap , especially at local warungs . A huge filling meal costs $2-5. Western food is pricier.

Cheap local beer like Bintang costs under $2 . Cocktails and imported alcohol can run $5-10 per drink or more.

Overall, you can eat very affordably, sticking to local cuisine and drinks. If you love sampling international cuisine or sipping cocktails by the beach, costs add up quicker.

Some ways we ate affordably included:

  • Starting the day with cheap local breakfasts
  • Getting lunch at local warungs
  • Cooking simple meals in our room
  • Taking advantage of happy hours
  • Sipping Bintang or local spirits over pricier imports

Why is Bali so cheap? Bali is affordable because cost of living for locals is extremely low compared to western countries.

Why Bali offers such great value

Thanks to Indonesia’s lower costs of living and weak currency, Bali offers an amazing value for visitors.

You can enjoy world-class beaches, lush jungles, cultural experiences, and delicious cuisine, often for half the price or less than other tropical destinations.

While Bali is becoming more expensive, it still boasts bargain prices compared to much of the world. Take advantage of the island’s affordability to have the trip of a lifetime that won’t break the bank!

Accommodation costs in Bali

It wasn’t easy to find the perfect accommodation to spend a few months in Bali. However, one of the biggest factors in Bali being so affordable is the wide range of cheap accommodation options.

If you are visiting the island for long-term, you should get out of the touristy areas such as Canggu, Seminyak and Kuta and find bargains. Spending a few days on the island of gods instead, you will want to stay central.

That said, these are our suggestions for you, depending on budget:

Hostels  – You can find beds in dorm rooms for as little as $5 USD per night. The downside is these are very basic with shared bathrooms. But it’s perfect for backpackers and solo travellers on a tight budget.

Some top rated hostels include:

  • The Commotion Hostel Bali ($10/night) –  Canggu – We stayed here for our first three days in Bali.
  • White Penny Hostel – Seminyak – ($20/night)
  • The Hostel Canggu – Berawa – ($11/night)

Homestays : Local families rent out rooms in their large homes for  $10-20 per night.  These offer a cosy, authentic way to experience Balinese culture.

Guesthouses : Small boutique guesthouses with an intimate feel are around $30-60 per night. You get more amenities than hostels and a touch of local charm.

Hotels : Mid-range hotels with nice pools and breakfast start around  $60 per night up to $150 or more.  It is still very affordable compared to other tropical destinations, European or US hotels.

Villas : Private villas with multiple bedrooms and lush pools rent for $100-500 per night. Great for groups or families. Some even come with daily maid service and chefs.

As you can see,  accommodation costs in Bali can work for any budget .

Cost of Food in Bali

Budgeting for food was a huge guess before visiting Bali. But, well, we were out every day for lunch and dinner. It didn’t break our Bali budget. The key to making Bali budget-friendly regarding food is to eat like the locals do.

At traditional warungs, small family-run eateries, meals are $2-5. You can vary your dietary, as we did, and consume a pizza, pasta or other carbs in spare days. At a local warung/restaurant, you’ll find options like:

  • Nasi goreng (fried rice)
  • Mie goreng (stir-fried noodles)
  • Nasi campur (mixed rice platter)
  • Gado gado (veggie salad with peanut sauce)
  • Sate ayam (chicken satay skewers)

These come in very generous portions, and you can eat them along with fresh juice or coconut for under $5 per person in total. There is also street food, like bakso (meatball soup) and pisang goreng (fried banana) can be found for under $1. A friend in the Bali Expat community once shared with us a tip on how to find great spots for street food. Follow where Gojeck drivers eat, and if you spot a green shirt next to a food stand, it is a great place to have lunch.

To vary our diet, we also had Vietnamese, Australian Burgers, Greek food and more. This came from our overall Bali budget. However, if you are eating Westernized food every day, for sure you need to raise your daily budget.

If eating at restaurants, Indonesian dishes still average just $3-5 . Western food , like burgers and pizza, costs more in the $10-15 range.

As everywhere in Asia, alcohol is pricier. Bintang beer is $2-3 , while cocktails typically run $8-12. Wine averages $5-10 per glass , as it is mostly imported from Australia.

Overall, eating traditional local cuisine at warungs and food stalls while enjoying cheap beer keeps dining costs low.

Average Cost of Transport

From day one in Bali, we rented a scooter. It was the best way to get around. However, if you are afraid of driving or need more experience before getting your bike, there are other ways to get around Bali. Here are the main transport options and average prices:

Scooter Rental : Renting a scooter costs around $5-10 USD per day. This gives you maximum flexibility to explore different areas of the island.

Taxi : Metered taxis start at around $3-5 for short trips and average $0.50-1 per km. GoJeck and Bolt Available. link

Private Driver : Hiring a private driver and car for the day runs around $40-60, depending on distance. Great for tailored tours.

Grab/GoJek : Uber-like ridesharing apps offer the cheapest car and motorbike drivers service. Short trips are just a few dollars, and it’s the most used way to get around Bali.

Public Bus : Public buses connect major towns for $1-5 per route. The cheapest way to travel but less convenient.

Boat:  Public fast boats to the islands run $10-25 roundtrip. Private charters cost more. You will use boats to get to Nusa Penida , Lembongan , Lombok or Gili Islands.

With so many ways to get around on the cheap, transport doesn’t have to be a major cost in Bali.

Cost saving tips

To have an affordable Bali trip while still doing everything you want, here are some money-saving hacks:

  • Book a room with free breakfast to save on a meal, or get an apart-hotel with a kitchenette.
  • Rent a scooter to avoid taxi costs and get around at your own pace.
  • Pack snacks, water, and coffee to have on hand.
  • Stay outside the main tourist centres for cheaper hotels.
  • Eat at warungs and food stalls, but stay safe, avoiding Bali belly.
  • Shop at local markets for produce and souvenirs.
  • Opt for happy hour drinks when going out or special nights (Taco Night in Bali was our favourite)
  • See temples with free entrance or donation-only fees. ( Gembleng Waterfall is donation-based and our favourite).
  • Join group tours and classes rather than private options.
  • Use rideshares instead of taxis.

What is the average cost of a trip to Bali?

The average cost of a trip to Bali can vary greatly depending on the type of traveller you are and the kind of experience you want to have.

Backpackers  can get by on a barebones budget of around  $20-30 USD per day.  This would cover a dorm bed, cheap local meals, and public transportation.

Budget travellers  can have a comfortable trip for  $50-70 USD per day.  Opting for budget hotels, eating a mix of local food and Western meals, doing free activities, and using grab/gojek for transport.

Mid-range travellers  often spend around  $100-150 USD per day  as a couple. Choosing 3-star hotels with a pool, doing a few paid activities like surf lessons, and eating out for most meals.

Luxury travellers  spend  $250+ USD per day  on higher-end hotels, fine dining, a private driver, and premium experiences like diving.

The flight to Bali can run  $600-1200+ USD  roundtrip from major hubs like Los Angeles, Sydney, London or Singapore.

So, in total, for a 1 week’s trip, expect to budget:

  • Luxury:  $1750+ for lodging + $1750+ for expenses =  $3500+ USD

How much spending money do I need for Bali for a week?

For a comfortable mid-range 7-day trip, here’s an approximate breakdown of spending money needs:

  • Accommodation: $600-800 for 4-5 star hotel
  • Food: $300-500 for a mix of local and western meals
  • Activities: $150-300 for surfing, tours, spa treatments, etc.
  • Local transport: $70-100 for scooter rental, grab/gojek, shuttle bus
  • Other Costs: $100-200 for souvenirs, toiletries, snacks, etc

Total: Around $1200-1500 USD per person  for 7 days in Bali would allow you to stay at nice hotels, eat out for all meals, do numerous paid activities, and utilize private drivers for longer day trips.

To save money, you could stay in guesthouses for $30-60 per night , eat more cheap local meals, stick to free attractions, and take public transport. This could lower costs to $700-1000 per person for 7 days .

Bali offers great value. But it helps to budget extra padding for any unexpected costs that come up on vacation.

Conclusion | Why is Bali so cheap?

Bali offers tremendous value and savings for visitors thanks to Indonesia’s lower cost of living and wages . Hotels, villas, activities, and dining costs a fraction compared to other tropical destinations.

It’s the ideal place to enjoy stunning natural beaches, outstanding simple culture, and unspoiled nature on a budget. While prices are rising with tourism, those affect Bali too, while it still remains quite cheaper compared to most global vacation spots of the same kind.

So he goes on to reveal his 5-day travel itinerary and how he managed to explore the entire Indonesian island in just ₹15,000. Read on to find out his story right from the horse’s mouth. I’m Avinash An Avid Traveller From Bangalore

Hi Everyone! I’m Avinash Singh from…. It’s a tough one as I spent most of my life in Assam and later hopped around a few cities like Delhi, Mumbai for more than 2 years each. Presently I stay in Bangalore where I work and save fuel. This provides me with the ability to explore this beautiful world. I lost count of cities and states I travelled to in India. But  I have the ultimate goal to see it all. Travelling around India, I also got bitten by the travel bug of finally heading out of the country where I visited Sri Lanka on a solo trip. And there has been nothing stopping me after that. And now as I write this article, I have around 15 stamps on my passport from all around Asia and my recent EuroTrip. Here’s my story of how I visited Bali at a budget of just ₹15,000 for 5 Days ( including flight tickets from Cambodia to Bali). Honeymooners if you’re wondering if Bali of Phuket is the better destination for Indians, you don’t need to think too much.

Travelling To Bali In ₹ 15,000 For 5 Days

Bali has been on the list of almost everyone from solo to honeymoon travellers. This Indonesian island offers you spectacular gems Kelingking beach and the gushing waterfalls. The most surprising one for me was definitely the Kelingking beach. Trekking here is just mind-blowing. From riding around the beautiful roads to almost being eaten up by a python, there are lots of stories to share with you guys. Let’s keep those stories for some other day. As many of you guys must be interested to know I covered Bali in 5 days on a tight budget (on such a budget, which people spend on their Goa trip) let me focus on that. So here’s how I managed my budget during this international trip.

Bali Offers Free Visa for Indians

Visa for Indians is free so read this right.  For a 30 days trip, you don’t need any visa when you are in Bali. Just pack your bags and go. So even with just ₹5000 in your pocket, you can definitely feel like a millionaire in Bali. So yes, covering Bali at ₹15000 for 5 days is doable at not even a shoestring budget. Trust me, I had my fair share of Nasi Goreng with some Bali coffee. So for those coffee lovers out there, you can get your Kopi Luwak for as cheap as a dollar per cup.

Airport Transfer Cost From ₹ 40 To ₹ 2000 In Bali

Airport transfer is not a tough one if you are used to Uber and Ola. Indonesia has its giant taxi service called Gojek. And you don’t need a sim to use it.  Connect to the airport Wifi and wait for the drivers to take you towards the city. I had a hostel booked for the night so I took the bike taxi and headed over to Kuta for just ₹ 40. If you are planning to go towards Ubud or somewhere far, check google maps taxi section for the rates comparing Gojek and Grab. I won’t suggest going out and bargaining with local taxi drivers as I have heard bad reviews for that. So try Gojek or Grab if you wish to save a buck for your coffee or Nasi Goreng.

Sim Card Are Priced At ₹ 500 To ₹ 600 In Bali

Cheap sim cards cost you from ₹500 to ₹600 depending on the data you require. Most sim cards come with a month’s validity. For 600 which is less than 10$, I had 10gb of data that worked almost all around the Island. From the top of Mount Batur to the bottom of Kelingking Beach. Ignore airports for sim as they might be costlier instead get it from local vendor shops.

Transportation Around Bali

Like the airport transfer, you can try Gojek/Grab but many areas like Ubud and Kuta don’t allow them. But you can find people with pamphlets sitting around saying ‘Bike Taxi’. Probably the government does this to support local drivers. But I wasn’t comfortable to travel by these since I wasn’t sure if the prices were regulated.  So you have two options, from renting a scooter which I did to taking taxis if you are part of a bigger group.

Depending on the vehicle, scooter costs anywhere between ₹200 to ₹500 per day. Taxis charge ₹2000 to ₹3000 per day depending on the size of the car. Petrol costs ₹50 to ₹60 per litre. I enquired t he taxi prices at hostels so it should come around to that. If you face any problems you should check with the hostel or hotel desk as they will help you out for sure.

Hostels In Bali Cost From ₹ 280- ₹ 600 Per Night

I stayed only in hostels but whatever you see online in the booking sites you get that in Bali. I had no surprises when it came to hostels. So if you choose to stay in a hotel, you can definitely get what you see online. It depends on your budget but the best hostel so far during my visit is the New Ubud Hostel. For just ₹ 280 I got an air-conditioned bedroom with breakfast and proper lockers. And it’s a forest-themed one so I witnessed trees all around the property.

Bali Flights Cost From ₹ 5000- ₹ 15,000

Flights are not included in my budget as I flew to Bali at just ₹ 2000 from Cambodia. As I went on a trip to many countries with a 5 day stop in Bali which is less as there’s still so much to see at Java Island, Gili Islands, and lots more if you include the whole of Indonesia. But you can get flights ranging from ₹5000 – ₹15000 round trip depending on when you book it. As there’s sale going on to this destination almost throughout the year.

I Paid Rs ₹ 200- ₹ 500 For Food In Bali

Depending on what you can do and what you prefer to eat you have every option out there in Bali. From vegan to delicious Balinese cuisine you have lots of options to try. And if you are on a budget I would suggest you eat local as that would save you alot of money.

My 5-Day Itinerary To Bali

And finally,  here’s my itinerary, which you must be waiting for. I have tried to utilize my time as much as I could when I was there. I missed a few places but I enjoyed my time at the few I was able to visit.

Day 1 – Exploring Nusa Penida

My Flight reached Bali or Ngurah Rai International Airport at midnight so I booked a hostel after landing there near Kuta. I did this so I can start the next day heading towards Nusa Penida, the first island I wanted to visit. Most people plan a day trip to that island but I decided to stay for the night.

From Kuta, you need to head over to Sanur beach which I covered on a Gojek bike taxi. From there, I took the speed boat for 200,000 IDR (₹1000) towards the island. You can get return tickets but it’s better to book one way as while returning I got it for 150,000 IDR (₹50,000) discount. I don’t know how I deserved the discount but if you book both ways you are charged the 400,000 IDR (₹2121)

At Nusa Penida, I rented a scooter for the price mentioned above. Here’s a quick tip. Don’t take it from the guys at the dock walk and ask the cafes around. You will get it at 40 to 50%  less, which I did. You must visit  Kelingking Beach, Angel Billabong, Broken Beach and Diamond Beach here. To combat the coronavirus pandemic Bali turned fermeneted palm wine arak into bottles of sanitizer.

But you might require two days as these take time to reach from one to the other as the roads are quite bad.  And you have to come back before night as there are no street lights. Over and above all this you might also be greeted by a python, which happened to me. The python was relaxing in the middle of the covering the whole width of it.

Day 2 – Visiting Ubud

I left Nusa Penida in the morning and headed over to Ubud. It was time to meet the mountains of Bali. I took a quick  30km ride to reach my hostel. After which I headed over to this beautiful lake temple called Ulun Danu Batur. Once you Google this place you will know properly after the search why I chose it to be the first place to visit even though it was 50km away from Ubud.

Just next to the temple was the famous Handara Bali Gate, which was very crowded. So if you are planning to go to Bali you have to ignore the crowd its everywhere. If you can’t, then don’t go there. Bali is a beautiful place which you must enjoy even amid the crowd. The Bali Gate looked beautiful when the sun sank down the mountains. It looked just amazing. At these places, you need to pay entry fees of ₹150 each at the temple and the Bali Gate.

Day 3 – Midnight Trek To Mount Batur

One of the activities you must try in Bali is the Mount Batur night trek. I was tired but booked this at my hostel for ₹2000 which included transportation, food and guide. You can be picked up from almost anywhere in Bali so just check at the place you are staying and they will help you out with the cost.

bali trip cost reddit

The trek started at around 4 am as we had to reach there quite early. They picked us up from our hostels.  We ate a mini breakfast which left us energised to reach the top. It’s not a very tough trek so you can complete it with a mid fitness level. The gorgeous sunrise was definitely worth not sleeping that night. At the end of the trek, you might have to push yourself a little as it’s quite steep. And few surprises await when you start going down which I will let it be a surprise.  After the trek, we were dropped at our hostels and I slept for the whole day and did nothing much after that.

Day 4 – Trip To Bali’s Rice Terraces & Waterfalls

On this day I visited the iconic Bali Rice Terrace farms. This is a farming style later I got to know even India follows at few places. It’s beautiful for sure but a guy from Assam with rice fields all around him doesn’t get that excited for it. But you should check it out, I went to the Tegalalang Rice Terrace which is the most famous in Ubud. This has swings and the famous romantic egg made of bamboo. Here you can click some beautiful pictures.

bali trip cost reddit

I also visited the Tukad Cepung Waterfall and Tibumana Waterfall. These two waterfalls are located around 20 to 30kms away from the city. And I would suggest you at least visit 3 sightseeing spots a day in Bali. So take your time and take dip in the Tibumana waterfall.

Day 5 – Experiencing Uluwatu Temple

My last day in Bali was a bitter-sweet one. I couldn’t believe my entire 5-day trip to Bali was almost over. So I started my day riding all over to Kuta where I booked my stay. I stayed around 1 km from the beach, which I, unfortunately, couldn’t visit.

bali trip cost reddit

After checking into my hotel, I was ready to head out. I planned to see the Uluwatu Temple which was about 25 km away from Kuta. To enter the temple I had to wear a Sarong to cover my legs. You can also walk around the pathway on the edge of the cliff to see the picturesque view of the temple from on top of the sea. You are not allowed to enter the temple. But can wait till evening to see the Kecak Fire Dance which is performed daily. I was on a tight schedule that day so had to miss it. But don’t blame me for that.

Firstly Kuta beach is not a place to visit at night there’s nothing and it’s dark. You can walk on the other side. When it comes to partying, enjoy the nightlife at hard rock cafes and local pubs with live music. But as it was a Thursday night it wasn’t really crowded.   So that was all you needed to know about my trip to Bali of 5 days for ₹ 15,000.  You can too visit Bali at this tight budget, but it definitely depends on your preferences as the Balinese spa and other activities comes at a price. But nevertheless, I do hope you enjoy your stay in Bali as much as I did.

Shopping Costs in Bali

Tips to save money on a bali trip.

  • Travel During the Low Season : Bali's peak season is from June to August and during the Christmas and New Year holidays, so traveling during the low season (from September to December and January to May) can save you a significant amount of money on flights, accommodation, and activities.
  • Book Accommodation in Advance : Booking your accommodation in advance can help you save money. Many hotels and resorts offer early bird discounts, so booking your stay ahead of time can save you some cash.
  • Use Local Transportation : Instead of taking taxis or hiring a private car, use local transportation like buses or motorbikes. They are much cheaper and can be a fun way to explore Bali.

Introduction

Are you dreaming of a tropical getaway to the beautiful island of Bali in Indonesia? From pristine beaches and lush landscapes to vibrant culture and warm hospitality, there are plenty of reasons why Bali is a popular destination for travelers around the world. However, before embarking on your adventure, it’s essential to have a clear understanding of the cost involved.

In this article, we will break down the expenses associated with a 5-day trip to Bali, giving you an idea of how much budget to allocate. From flights and accommodation to transportation, dining, attractions, and miscellaneous expenses, we’ll cover it all.

It’s important to note that the cost of a trip to Bali can vary depending on several factors, such as the time of year, the level of luxury you prefer, and your personal spending habits. Our goal is to provide you with a general estimate based on average prices, so you can plan and budget accordingly.

So, if you’re ready to explore Bali without breaking the bank, let’s dive into the details and discover how much a 5-day trip to this mesmerizing island might cost.

Cost of Flights to Bali

One of the significant expenses when traveling to Bali is the cost of flights. The price of airfare can vary widely depending on factors such as the time of year, the airline you choose, and how early you book your tickets. Generally, flights to Bali from major international airports can range from $500 to $1500 per person, round trip.

If you’re a budget-conscious traveler, it’s advisable to be flexible with your travel dates and consider booking your flights well in advance. By doing so, you may be able to snag a better deal or take advantage of promotional offers. Additionally, keep an eye out for airlines that offer discounted fares or frequent flyer programs that can help reduce the cost of your flights.

Another tip to save money on flights is to be open to flying on weekdays or during off-peak seasons when prices tend to be lower. Be sure to compare prices from different airlines and use flight search engines or online travel agencies to find the best deals.

It’s also worth considering the cost of transportation to and from the airport in Bali. Taxis and ride-hailing services are readily available, and the average cost of a one-way journey from Ngurah Rai International Airport to popular tourist areas is around $10 to $20, depending on the distance.

Overall, make sure to allocate a reasonable budget for flights to Bali, as it is a significant expense. Remember to factor in any additional fees for baggage, seat selection, travel insurance, and any other optional add-ons offered by the airline.

Accommodation Expenses

When it comes to accommodation in Bali, you’ll find a wide range of options catering to different budgets and preferences. Whether you’re looking for luxury resorts, boutique hotels, budget hostels, or private villas, there’s something for everyone.

The cost of accommodation in Bali can vary significantly depending on factors such as the location, type of accommodation, facilities, and the time of year you visit. On average, budget travelers can find affordable accommodation options starting at around $20 to $50 per night. These can include simple guesthouses or budget-friendly hotels with basic amenities.

If you’re looking for more mid-range options, you can expect to pay between $50 to $150 per night for comfortable hotels or villas with additional amenities such as swimming pools, spa services, and more.

For those seeking a luxury experience, Bali is home to many world-class resorts and villas that offer top-notch facilities and services. Prices for luxury accommodation can range from $150 to well over $1000 per night, depending on the level of exclusivity, location, and amenities available.

It’s important to consider the location of your accommodation as well. Popular areas such as Seminyak, Ubud, and Kuta tend to have higher prices due to their proximity to attractions, restaurants, and nightlife. If you’re willing to stay a bit further away from the tourist hubs, you can find more affordable options.

Additionally, keep in mind that some accommodations may require you to pay a security deposit or additional fees for services such as airport transfers, breakfast, or laundry. It’s important to factor these costs into your overall accommodation budget.

Lastly, if you’re traveling with a group or family, consider booking a private villa. These can often be a cost-effective option as they offer privacy, spacious living areas, and sometimes even come with private pools. Splitting the cost among several people can make renting a villa more affordable than individual hotel rooms.

Overall, budgeting for accommodation in Bali will depend on your personal preferences and the level of luxury you desire. By researching and comparing prices in advance, you can find suitable accommodation that fits within your budget while providing comfort and convenience during your stay in Bali.

Transportation Costs

Getting around Bali is relatively affordable and offers various transportation options to suit different budgets and preferences. Here are some transportation costs to consider when planning your 5-day trip to Bali:

Scooter Rental: Renting a scooter is a popular and cost-effective option for getting around Bali, especially for solo travelers or couples. Daily rental prices can range from $5 to $15, depending on the duration and type of scooter. However, it’s important to note that traffic in Bali can be chaotic, and road conditions may vary, so exercise caution and ensure that you have a valid international driver’s license and adequate travel insurance.

Private Drivers and Tour Packages: If you prefer a hassle-free experience or want to explore various attractions in Bali, hiring a private driver or booking a tour package can be a convenient option. The cost of a full-day private driver typically ranges from $30 to $50, depending on the itinerary and distance covered. Tour packages vary in price but often include transportation, entrance fees, and a professional guide.

Public Transportation: Bali has limited public transportation options, with the most common being buses and bemos (small vans). While these options are relatively inexpensive, they can be less convenient and require some knowledge of the routes and schedules.

Additional Costs: It’s important to consider additional transportation costs such as airport transfers and intercity travel. Airport transfers to your accommodation can range from $10 to $20 one-way, depending on the distance. If you plan to explore different regions of Bali, you may also need to budget for intercity transportation, such as ferry rides or domestic flights, which can vary in price depending on the destination.

Overall, transportation costs in Bali can vary depending on your preferred mode of transport and the distances you plan to cover. It’s advisable to allocate a reasonable budget for transportation to ensure you can comfortably navigate the island and make the most of your time in Bali.

Local Transportation

Getting around Bali involves costs, whether you’re hiring a driver, renting a scooter, or using public transportation.

Sightseeing and Activities

Entrance fees to temples, parks, and attractions, as well as the cost of activities like surfing lessons or spa treatments, need to be considered in your budget.

Detailed Planning Steps

Now, let’s explore the step-by-step guide to plan your budget trip to Bali.

Bali boasts a tropical climate, making it a year-round destination. However, to maximize savings and avoid crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons – April to June and September to October. Not only will you enjoy pleasant weather, but you’ll also find lower prices on accommodation and flights.

Look for the best deals on flights at least two to three months before your travel dates. Booking well in advance will significantly reduce your costs. Airlines like AirAsia and Malindo Air often have reasonably priced flights from major Indian cities to Denpasar, Bali’s capital.

Great news for Indian passport holders – Indonesia offers a free 30-day visa on arrival for Indian citizens. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from your arrival date in Bali.

Bali offers an array of budget-friendly accommodation options, ranging from hostels to guest houses and budget hotels. Regions like Kuta, Seminyak, and Ubud are popular among tourists, providing affordable lodging options. Always compare prices on different platforms and consider booking directly through the hotel’s website as they often have exclusive discounts.

Getting Around

One of the most cost-effective and fun ways to get around Bali is by renting a scooter, which usually costs around INR 400-500 per day. Alternatively, you can also use local transport like Bemos or hire a private driver for full-day tours. Remember to negotiate prices beforehand to avoid overpaying.

Eating in Bali can be a delightful, yet budget-friendly experience. Look for local Warungs (small family-owned restaurants) that serve delicious Balinese cuisine at very affordable prices. You can enjoy a hearty meal for as low as INR 100-150. However, make sure to drink bottled water to avoid any health issues.

Activities and Sightseeing

Plan your itinerary in a way that you visit multiple attractions within the same area on the same day to save on transport costs. Admission fees for most temples and attractions in Bali are quite affordable (ranging from INR 200-500). However, if you’re a fan of water sports or plan on taking surfing lessons, be sure to negotiate for the best prices.

While shopping in Bali can be tempting, it’s essential to stick to your budget. Bali’s markets are famous for their bargaining culture, so don’t hesitate to negotiate prices for souvenirs, clothing, or handicrafts. Also, consider purchasing local SIM cards for data and communication as they are quite cheap and efficient.

Health and Safety

Travel insurance is a must. It might seem like an unnecessary expense, but it is crucial for unforeseen circumstances. Also, keep a small first-aid kit handy and follow general safety measures.

Money Saving Tips for Bali Trip

Travel during off-peak season.

Travelling during the off-peak season can significantly reduce airfare and accommodation costs.

Opt for Local Cuisine

Local food is often cheaper and gives you an authentic taste of Balinese culture.

Use Public Transport

Using public transport or renting a bike can be more economical than hiring a private cab.

Best Travel Insurance for Bali – Price & Requirements

When we went to Bali, we purchased Heymondo travel insurance before our trip. As it turned out, this was a very smart decision since I ended up needing medical treatment during the trip. Even if nothing had gone wrong, though, travel insurance for Bali was worth having just for the peace of mind it gave us.

Of course, to have the perfect trip, you’ll also need to decide what things you want to do in Bali and where to stay in Bali . In terms of Bali travel insurance , though, these are all the things you need to know:

  • Best travel insurance for Bali

Ready to learn more about the best travel insurance for Bali ? Let’s get to it !

Travel insurance for Bali is not currently mandatory. Still, purchasing travel insurance that covers COVID-19 is always a smart idea.

Monkey in Bali, Monkey in Bali

After all, you never know when you’ll get sick or injured while you’re traveling. Plus, paying medical fees out of pocket can get incredibly expensive. On top of that, having insurance for travel to Bali will allow you to get reimbursed if you cancel a hotel reservation at the last minute, lose your luggage, or need to quarantine. It’s always better to buy travel insurance for Bali and not need it than to go without it and up paying tons of fees.

Bali travel insurance requirements

Even though travel insurance for Bali is not an entry requirement, there are still several types of coverage that you should have if you do decide to purchase insurance. COVID-19 coverage is absolutely imperative, as is emergency medical expense coverage, particularly since medical care can be costly. Evacuation and repatriation coverage, which covers return travel to your home country for medical treatment or because of political events, is also crucial.

As such, you should, at a minimum, purchase travel health insurance for Bali . If you’d prefer to have travel-related coverage as well, look for travel insurance with trip cancellation and baggage coverage .

The price of travel insurance for Bali will depend on your age and nationality, as well as the length and cost of your trip. To help you get an idea of how much insurance for travel to Bali costs , I used the example of a 30-year-old American spending a week in Bali with a trip cost of $2,500 to generate quotes.

*price used for example

Ultimately, all four of the Bali travel insurance plans I’ve compared have their merits. The best overall travel insurance for Bali , however, is Heymondo , especially since they pay travelers’ medical expenses directly and upfront. If you’d prefer to save money and just have medical-related coverage, SafetyWing is another excellent option, but bear in mind it has a deductible of $250 per claim .

1. Heymondo , the best travel insurance for Bali

If you want the best travel insurance for Bali , look no further than Heymondo . Not only does their Top plan offer a high amount of coverage in all categories, but it’s also the most affordable option with both travel- and medical-related coverage.

Heymondo, Bali travel insurance company

On top of that, Heymondo is the only Bali travel insurance company that pays for travelers’ medical expenses directly and upfront, saving you the hassle of filing a claim to get reimbursed. The convenience of this payment process as well as the company’s excellent customer service have enabled Heymondo to consistently rank as one of the best travel insurance companies .

Best of all, the Top plan includes a $0 deductible for medical expenses, so you won’t have to pay a single penny out of pocket for any medical fees.

Heymondo has several amazing benefits and very few downsides, which is why we have annual multi-trip insurance with this company. Since we’ll be taking a number of trips over the next year, this policy saves us a lot of money. You can learn more in our Heymondo review and save 5% on your plan with the promo code below.

2. SafetyWing , a cheap travel insurance for Bali

Saving money on travel insurance doesn’t have to mean poor coverage. Purchasing travel health insurance will ensure you get the medical coverage you need without the higher cost of covering travel-related expenses.

SafetyWing is by far the best health insurance for Bali travel option. Their Nomad Insurance plan offers great worldwide coverage in all medical-related categories, plus it’s the most affordable Bali travel insurance of all the plans I compared. You can even choose to automatically extend your plan every month if you want to keep traveling, so it’s ideal for digital nomads looking for long-term travel insurance .

SafetyWing, holiday insurance for Bali

The Nomad Insurance plan does offer some limited travel-related coverage for baggage loss and trip interruption, but this coverage is not as comprehensive as that of other travel insurance plans. Moreover, the plan’s $250 deductible means you’ll have to pay $250 towards any medical bills before SafetyWing covers the remaining balance.

As such, if you’d prefer a $0 deductible or want better travel-related coverage, Heymondo is your best bet.

3. World Nomads , the best holiday insurance for Bali for sporty travelers

If you’re planning a vacation full of adventurous activities, World Nomads is the perfect choice for holiday insurance for Bali . Their Standard plan covers tons of activities and sports, including surfing and snorkeling, two of the best things to do in Bali .

World Nomads, best travel insurance for Bali

You’ll also enjoy good coverage in all travel- and medical-related categories, as well as a $0 deductible for medical expenses. In terms of cost, however, the Standard plan is a little on the pricey side. After all, you can get a higher amount of coverage in all categories for a much lower price with Heymondo.

While World Nomads is one of the best cheap travel insurance companies , it’s only worth it if you’ll be doing a lot of sporty activities.

4. IMG , a reliable travel insurance for Bali, Indonesia

IMG is a well-respected travel insurance company that many travelers trust for their insurance needs. As such, it probably comes as no surprise that IMG’s iTravelInsured SE plan provides a solid amount of coverage in all categories, including trip cancellation insurance .

IMG, best Bali travel insurance

This travel insurance for Bali plan even includes Cancel for Work Reasons coverage and coverage for pre-existing conditions . There’s also a $0 deductible for medical expenses, so as long as your claim is approved, IMG will completely cover any medical bills incurred abroad.

One drawback, though, is that the iTravelInsured SE plan is the most expensive of all the plans I compared. As such, if you want similar or even better coverage for a lower price, go with Heymondo .

What travel insurance do I need for Bali?

Ultimately, travel insurance for Bali is not mandatory, but it’s still smart to purchase some kind of coverage. Take it from me: when I was visiting the Monkey Forest in Ubud, a monkey bit me! I then rushed to the nearest hospital, where I was quickly treated.

Balangan Beach, how much insurance for travel to Bali costs

Fortunately, I had purchased Heymondo holiday insurance for Bali before my trip, so I knew my medical expenses would be covered. When I saw the bill, though, I was especially relieved I had travel insurance – that medical treatment was not cheap! Save yourself the stress of going through an experience like mine without travel insurance by purchasing coverage before you travel.

Any of the Bali travel insurance options above will provide great coverage, but the standout is Heymondo , which offers excellent travel- and medical-related coverage for an affordable price.

On the other hand, if you want to save money, SafetyWing ’s travel health insurance for Bali is the most affordable option.

Hello Ascen, a group of family are travelling to Bali next year, we have heard that there are some insurance companies that will not cover you if you ANY alcohol in your system. As there will drinking on our trip we are concerned. Would you know if this will apply to any of the above mentioned Insurance companies?

Warmest regards,

Hi Zena, Most insurance companies won’t cover any injuries or incidents that result from having a blood alcohol level above the legal limit. If you’re socially drinking, you should be okay, and you can still purchase a travel insurance policy for Bali.

Would i be covered for medical cost s if I went as a passanger on the official Gojet? Taxi scooters? Thank you

Hi Eva, Yes, but the extent of the coverage really does depend on which company and policy you go with. I would double-check before purchasing.
