French Farmhouse Dining Room Tour

Today, I thought it would be fun to take you on a tour of our French farmhouse dining room. This is the only room in the house that I consider to be finished, and that’s just fine with me. I want to take my time furnishing our new home.
Take a Video Tour of Our French Farmhouse Dining Room
Start with this video tour of our dining room to get a sense of the space; then, keep reading for more photos and details about all the furnishings.

Take a Photo Tour of Our French Farmhouse Dining Room
Now that you’ve watched the video, let me take you on a photo tour of the dining room, so I can go into more detail about the room’s features and furnishings.
When we bought the house, the dining room walls and ceiling were dingy from years of fireplace smoke, so I hurried to repaint them before the girls arrived for Christmas. It was a big job, but worth the effort.
The dining room fireplace is one of my favorite features of the house …
and as you can see, it’s still in working order. The previous owners added the stone platform, so it would draft better. They also commissioned a blacksmith to do all the ironwork. I love the little niches on either side of the fireplace.
We’ve roasted marshmallows over the fire several times.
Once life slows down a bit, I plan to do some of our cooking over the fire (at least during the cooler months). I brought all my cast iron cookware with me, and the fireplace came with a spit. How fun is that?
It blows my mind to think about all the skill and work that went into carving the stones for the fireplace surround.
It’s such a cozy spot to sit. In fact, I’m sitting in front of the fireplace as I write this.
We were lucky enough to be able to purchase some furniture from the previous owners. This antique wood sofa and coffee table were included in that purchase. They create the perfect little sitting area in front of the fire.
I call this my Poldark sofa. If you’re familiar with that TV series, it reminds me of the sofa that he and his wife sat on at night.
I gave the sofa a quick update by changing the pillow covers to some I’ve had for years.
The dining room has two large windows, so it gets plenty of light. When the weather’s nice, we open the windows as soon as we get up in the morning.
We shipped some of belongings over from the United States, including this antique pine store counter that we use as a sideboard. At 10-feet-long, it’s a big piece, but it fits this wall perfectly. We found it at a thrift store in New York City years ago. I’m so glad it made the move with us.
Miraculously, all my dishes also survived the trip. The ship our container was on was out at sea when a storm with 100-mile-an-hour winds hit, so I don’t know how they didn’t get broken.
We’re cloth napkin people, so those drawers hold my large collection of napkins, as well as placemats and other tableware.
It’s amazing how well our sideboard goes with the other pieces in the room. It just feels like it belongs in this house.
The dining room table is 12-feet-long, and it’s another piece that we opted to buy from the previous homeowners. It had never been stained or sealed (they kept a tablecloth over it), so I applied a food-grade oil/wax sealer.
The table was made from a tree that used to stand on the property. They had a friend who needed money to buy an engagement ring, so they commissioned him to build it.
We also bought the antique English church pew from the previous owners. It works really well with the table, and makes you feel like you’re sitting at a restaurant table.
They had a set of dark-stained ladder back chairs that they used with the table, but we decided not to purchase them. After lots of searching, I found a set of bistro chairs on Facebook Marketplace. They retail for 200€ each, but I got all four chairs for 200€. Very happy with that.
The light fixture hanging over the dining room table was a lucky consignment store find, and the mirror used to hang over the fireplace in our old house in Tennessee.
In addition to being really long, the dining room table is really wide, which I love. There’s lots of room down the center for serving dishes or fondue pots (we are in France, after all), so the table doesn’t feel the least bit cramped.
I’m on the lookout for four more bistro chairs for the ends of the table. We won’t put them around the table all the time, but it would be nice to have some extra chairs in storage for big get-togethers.
The antique pine cabinet that sits next to the door is yet another piece that we bought from the previous homeowners. There’s actually another one just like it upstairs.
The knobs were missing, so we replaced them. It’s now one of our hardest-working pieces of furniture in the house.
We use it as a junk cabinet, which is so much better than a junk drawer because it actually has room for all the things that we need and use regularly.
Each bin is clearly labeled with what’s inside, which makes it easy to find stuff and just as easy to put stuff away. So far, this new system is working really well for us. If you’d like me to do a post about how I organized the cabinet (the categories I used, etc.), just leave me a comment.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this tour of my French farmhouse dining room. I’ll be sharing many more posts about our 17th century house and garden, as we work to bring it back to life.

This 900-Square-Foot Prewar Apartment Has a Personal Element in Every Room

Over the past decade, Justin DiPiero has toured countless New York City spaces. His interior design roles at now defunct design startup Homepolish, coworking company WeWork, and short-term rental marketplace Sonder have provided him with access to so many homes and offices that he knew exactly what he wanted when he started his own apartment search in 2021. The moment he walked into his 1939 prewar building in Prospect Heights , he was sold.
“I knew that I wanted to really anchor the space with the rug,” shares Justin. “I did a custom size from RuggleUp , it’s 11x11, so it sits about a foot off of the wall in each direction. And then I placed everything on top of that. A traditional 8x10 or 9x12 wasn’t really going to work in the space.”
The custom David Silverstein painting energizes the living area.
“The lobby has a beautiful Art Deco chinoiserie mural,” Justin describes. “That was the first thing that I saw and I was like, Oh my gosh, this is so cool; I want to live in this building. The character of the apartment was still very much intact. It had the original parquet floors and beautiful soft arches. I immediately fell in love with all of those period details.”
Justin purchased the unit right away and has been renovating it ever since. So far, the most heartbreaking change he’s made was swapping the historic floors, which turned out to be damaged underneath, for wide-plank white oak engineered hardwood. The most exciting update was creating a second bedroom (which doubles as an office) by dividing the extra-long living room with a wall and steel-and-glass pocket doors.
Justin plans to update the existing kitchen in the next 5 to 10 years, but the dated wood cabinets will have to do for now.
Though remodeling the dated kitchen is still on Justin’s to-do list, he has finally reached a level of completion with the project. He’s infused nearly every inch with a calming neutral palette of ivories, camels, and ochres, while incorporating juxtaposing textures (think raw silk with solid walnut) for depth. Most importantly, each space has at least one sentimental feature. “I wanted everything in this apartment to have a personal element,” he says.
The oversized foyer turned dining zone, for example, is outfitted with sculptural wood Maide chairs by Orior, an Irish furniture brand that holds a special place in Justin’s heart. “My college friend is the son of the founders and he’s now the North American CEO,” he shares. “It’s a family company that’s been around for about 40 years. Everything is handmade in their factory in Ireland.”
Justin transformed his large foyer into a cozy dining area.
By Kristi Kellogg
The two seats are accompanied by a built-in bench with a geometric Zak+Fox cushion, a plinth-like West Elm table , and a Taiwanese paper lantern that Justin has admired for eons. “I have been coveting that pendant for literally 15 years,” he admits. “I saw it while I was still in college studying design. It has this ubiquitous feel, but the terracotta finish with the hand-painted bamboo motif makes it a little bit more unique. It’s been sitting on my Pinterest board for so long.”
In the adjacent living area, a velvet Pottery Barn sleeper sofa (for accommodating overnight guests) mingles with a 1960s Bassett surfboard cocktail table , wiggly bronze Design Frères Méandre accent chairs , and molded glass-and-brass Brasher sconces from Hudson Valley Lighting. But it’s the commissioned painting, with its tawny hue and moody flowers, that steals the show.
“It’s my favorite thing in the world,” raves Justin. “It’s by another one of my friends from school, a fine artist named David Silverstein . I sent him a photo of the pendant in the dining room and some other inspiration images of what I was going for and he was able to draw this out and then paint it at his studio in Connecticut. I think it’s amazing.”
“When there’s someone staying in this room, they can pull the curtain across and have a little bit more privacy,” says Justin.
Nearby, the new bedroom-office includes a Serena & Lily Presidio Trundle daybed (to squeeze in more guests), Love House butcher block cubes, a tiny artwork by Justin’s friend Matt Jackson , and a fluted Studio McGee for Threshold cabinet. Most notably, the compact chamber is covered in a beige Helene Blanche wallpaper that evokes Justin’s childhood.
“It gives me a bit of a country vibe,” he describes. “I grew up in a Colonial Williamsburg reproduction house, which was very popular in the ’90s, and this just reminded me of that in some way. It makes this a really cozy, nostalgic space. I like that there is a pattern, but it’s neutral, so when I’m working, I am not distracted by it. It helps me focus and it creates a little cocoon for me to be productive in.”
“I actually was inspired by Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment in Sex and the City, ” Justin reveals. “It changed throughout the series, but there’s one photo that I kept coming back to from the earlier seasons, when she had this flat-woven Tibetan-style rug in these reds and orangey colors. And then the walls were pale sage, almost like silvery blue gray. I took those cues as jumping off points for my room.”
Justin’s own bedroom feels similarly insulated, with its two-toned green paint job that was inspired by Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment in early episodes of Sex and the City . The pale sage walls and darker moss trim generate an envelope of warmth. Meanwhile, a deep red, floral rug adds a pop of fiery color—and a sentimental touch, of course. “It was in my great-grandmother’s living room in Ohio,” reveals Justin. “It’s vintage from the 1950s. It’s super special to me.” It doesn’t get more personal than that.
“The bathroom’s actually in really great shape,” says Justin. “It was recently redone right before I moved in. It’s got a nice ivory subway tile on the walls and a black hexagonal tile on the floor, so it’s pretty classic. It definitely fits with the rest of the vibe of the apartment. And that was one of the selling features of the place, too, that I didn’t need any work in the bathroom.”

Palecek Isla Chandelier Look for Less Options
Decorating Ideas, Tips and Trends
Sharing my top picks for Palecek Isla chandelier look for less options!

Our Coastal Kitchen Featuring the Palecek Isla Chandelier
If you asked me my favorite item in our new house, it would easily be the Palecek Isla chandeliers in our kitchen! Our peninsula is over 13′ long and our ceilings are 12′ high, so with all the white, we wanted something that was a statement. And these gorgeous chandeliers deliver! I realized they’re just a light fixture, but they honestly make me so happy every time I see them!
SPRING KITCHEN SOURCES: Striped Runner Rug | Scalloped Chandeliers | Swivel Counter Stools | Woven Roman Shades (Bonaire Flaxen) | Faux Greenery | White Vase | Cabinet Knobs | Cabinet Bin Pulls | Cabinet Appliance Handles
But the reality is they are very expensive. They’ve also gone up in price in the year or so since I found them. Plus we were offered them at cost rather than retail price through our builder, and I still almost didn’t get them. In fact, if it weren’t for the lighting budget included in our new build, I likely wouldn’t have considered them at all. Does it mean that some of our rooms don’t have light fixtures at all yet outside of can lights? Yes, yes it does. But I’m still so happy with my decision to get these!
So, it has been my mission since we moved in last fall to find some good options that are a bit more budget-friendly. It’s taken some time for other retailers to offer something similar, but I think I’ve finally found a few good alternatives. But if you really have your heart set on the original, just know that I have seen the Palecek Isla Chandelier go on sale. Typically around 15-20% off, but even small savings can definitely add up!
SPRING LIVING ROOM SOURCES: Sofas (read my full review here ) | Chairs | Coffee Table | Indoor/Outdoor Striped Rug | Linen Pillows (in Chambray/Mineral Blue) | Wide Striped Pillows | Thin Striped Pillows | Paisley Lumbar Pillows | Oversized Baskets | Frame TV | Frame TV Art | Vase | Oversized Green Branch | Similar Grapewood Branch | “Surf Tribe” | “Joie” | “Summer to Summer” | Ceramic Urchin Catchall | Lamps | Console Table | Woven Roman Shades (Bonaire Flaxen)
Below, I’ve found several great options for a look for less to the Palecek Isla chandelier . But, I think the closest is this new scalloped chandelier that just launched from Pottery Barn! It mimics the shape and scale most closely!
SOURCES: SAVE Scalloped Chandelier | SPLURGE Scalloped Chandelier
For reference, here is a look at the cone version of the look for less option in our bathroom. I would argue it’s a smidge less orange in person than it appears online, so not as dramatic of a difference compared to the Isla Chandelier.
BATHROOM SOURCES: Woven Cone Pendants (small size) | Blue Velvet Ribbon (similar here ) | Vase | Pre-Lit Birch Stems | Faux Orange Stems | Faux Pine Stems | Cabinet Knobs | Cabinet Bin Pulls | Reversible Pine Tree Towel | Citrus & Sage Hand Soap | Bath Mats | Faucets
Following are even more look for less options. I’ve included a variety of sizes as well as styles (including semi-flushmount) if this is a look you love as well! Whether you are most drawn to the scallops or the rope or the overall scale, the options below offer something for all at a variety of price points. Ian Poulter gets pulled into nickname squabble, takes shot at PGA Tour ratings
Ian "The Postman" Poulter celebrates Europe's victory at the 2018 Ryder Cup.
Tom Jenkins
The emergence of LIV Golf has caused unprecedented fracture and turmoil at the top of the men's game these past few years. But lost amid all that is one very important question: Does pro golf have room for TWO "postmans"?
RELATED: Scottie Scheffler's putting coach dunks on internet troll
This question actually pre-dates any LIV drama, but it has largely gone under the radar. First, it involves LIV's Ian Poulter, AKA The Postman, because he always delivers at the Ryder Cup (See above photo). And as you can see, his nickname is clearly marked on his Wikipedia page:
But then there's the PGA Tour's J.T. Poston, who also has that nickname—once again confirmed by Wikipedia:
Do we have a "Nicknamegate" on our hands?! Now Poulter has been pretty out of sight the past two years not including being featured on an entertaining episode of Netflix's "Full Swing" last year. But Poston has been cooking on the course, particularly on Thursday when he fired an opening 63 at Harbour Town to grab the Day 1 lead at the RBC Heritage.
But when the PGA Tour posted a highlight of its Postman—including a mailbox emoji—Poulter got pulled into a little squabble by fellow Euro Pablo Larrazabal. To Poulter's credit, he wasn't upset about the nickname—not that he could be with Poston long being called that and being born with a name that sounds a lot like the word "postman"—but he did manage to take a tiny shot at the PGA Tour's ratings:
Dagger. Those disappointing ratings have been in the news a bunch of late, especially with numbers down for even the Masters . Then again, no LIV player is in position to make fun of anyone's TV ratings.
In any event, Poulter will always be known to many as "The Postman" for his Ryder Cup heroics. But it's probably time for the 48-year-old to pass the baton envelope to the 30-year-old J.T. when it comes to this matter.

I worked on cruises for 3 years. Here are 6 things I'd never do on board.
- I used to work on cruises. After many days at sea, there are things I'd never do on a cruise .
- I never wear my room key around my neck and try to avoid misnaming the ship.
- I never buy the drink package or pay for meal upgrades in the main dining room.
I've sailed around the world as a cruise-ship employee , and now I enjoy cruising as a passenger.
I love the salty sea air, waking up in a new country, and lazy days by the pool, but a week at sea could get more complicated this year with cruises predicted to be in high demand .
While fighting a little harder to secure a prime seat on the pool deck, you may as well also avoid some rookie mistakes.
Here are six things I'd never do on a cruise after working on them for three years.
Pay for upgrades in the main dining room
Typically, main dining room meals are included in the cost of a cruise. But in recent years, it's become common for cruise lines to charge guests extra if they want to upgrade to "supplementary" items like lobster or certain steaks.
I know $12 may not seem like much for a steak or lobster tail at dinner, but the cost of the cruise is supposed to include your food.
So, even though I enjoy lobster, I stick with the items without the upcharges.
Buy the drink package
I enjoy a piña colada by the pool or a Manhattan while listening to a jazz set after dinner. Even so, it doesn't make sense for me to pay in advance for 12 to 15 cocktails a day.
I've done the math on typical unlimited drink packages , and the cost simply isn't worth it for me.
This is especially true with a port-heavy itinerary. If I've gone ashore to explore all day, that means I'm not sidled up to the bar slurping down alcoholic slushies.
Related stories
I prefer to buy as I go and take advantage of happy hour and other drink specials that are available on certain cruise lines. I also check the beverage policy in advance and bring on my own wine, if allowed.
Touch shared contact surfaces with my fingers
Fellow guests will never see me touching the elevator buttons with my fingertips. Knuckles and elbows do the trick.
Some cruise lines are better than others at wiping down commonly touched surfaces, but I don't take any chances. I avoid touching things others frequently touch, and I wash my hands frequently.
This strategy has worked for me, as I have never contracted norovirus, even when it was running rampant on a ship I was on. It's quite contagious and can linger on your fingertips even after using hand sanitizer . I'd definitely rather be safe than sorry.
Wear my room key around my neck
I never walk around the ship with my room key around my neck, and I especially never do this when on land.
There are two reasons for this. First, I see many passengers using the room keys dangling from their necks to flaunt their cruise loyalty status . It just looks pretentious.
The sophisticated cruisers with the highest status, with the most days at sea, never show off their fancy room keys.
That's because they know the more important reason — safety. In port, that room key bouncing off your chest looks like an invitation to be robbed. It screams, "I have money! Come and take it from me."
Misname the ship
English is a funny language that has its quirks. Naming conventions make that even more complicated.
Ships have proper names, and so do not require a definite article. For example, "Tomorrow I am embarking on Discovery Princess," or "I enjoyed scenic cruising on MS Westerdam."
If you want to look like a savvy sailor, learn to drop the "the!"
Plan my port-day itinerary so tight that I may not make it back to the ship on time
Oh, the recurring nightmares I've had about not making it back to the ship on time during a port day.
I've never missed a sail away, but I have cut it too close at times and have had to run down a pier or two. Just recently, as a passenger, my taxi driver got lost returning our group to the port at night.
When I realized how late we were going to be, I forked over $8 per minute to be connected with the ship. I pleaded with them to wait for us. It was a sprint through the port to get back on and we received quite a scolding from the first officer.
That time, we got lucky. In the future, I'll be giving myself more time than I think I need to make it back.
