Here’s your guide to using the Disney Cruise Navigator app before you embark.

A Disney Cruise is a magical experience for Disney fans of all ages. What better way to sail the high seas than with your favorite Disney characters? There’s a lot to ‘“sea” and do onboard, and the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app can help you plan and manage your trip, explore offerings on the ship, and stay in touch with your family and friends.

We’ve used the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App on every one of our sailings, and while some features have changed over the years, the app is still a useful – and essential! – tool for cruisers to make sure you don’t miss out on a moment of fun. You’ll rely on the Navigator App before and during your cruise, so you’ll want to get familiar with it well before you actually set sail. Below, we’ve got your guide to using and perusing the app!

To start using the Disney Cruise Navigator app, download it from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android) and create a login – or log in with your existing Disney account.

The Disney Cruise Navigator app offers helpful features before your cruise.

As soon as you book your cruise, you’ll see a countdown to your sailing, featuring Disney characters. You’ll also have access to helpful features to manage your cruise, make payments, view and modify your stateroom, and view deck plans.

You can also request to change your dining time, if spots are available, or manage travel options such as ground transportation and flights.

Add your reservation to the DCL Navigator app.

Once your cruise is paid in full and your booking window opens – based upon your Castaway Club stats – you can explore and reserve activities such as adults-only dining experiences .

Using the Disney Cruise Navigator App During Your Cruise

Once you’re aboard the ship, you’ll have access to additional features when connected to the free Wi-Fi ( free when used only for the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app).

Wi-Fi is free when using the app aboard the ship.

The Onboard Chat is an easy way to connect with friends, family, and Crew Members – including Guest Services – all from within the app. You can also view restaurant information such as locations, menus, and your table number. Want to skip a meal to relax in your room? Check out the in-room dining menu right from the app for a sweet treat .

One helpful feature you’ll want to utilize in the Navigator App is the ability to participate in the Mandatory Emergency Drill , or Muster Drill, before you set sail. Just have a member of your party go to your assigned designated onboard Assembly Station and check in with a crew member. This is a welcome change compared to waiting for everyone to arrive and check in before the drill could begin, especially if it was located on deck.

Other features include the ability to review the daily entertainment schedule – you’ll find the details for shows, fireworks, activities, Port Adventures, and character locations – and set reminders so you don’t miss out on a moment of fun .

You can also keep tabs on your onboard account so there aren’t any surprises on your last day as you prepare for debarkation .

Tips for Using the Disney Cruise Navigator App

Here are some tips to help you get the most out of the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App:

• Bring a phone charger—or two! You’ll want to keep the app open to receive notifications and reminders. Having a portable charger to carry with you through the day can be a big help; just remember to charge it each night.
• Make sure you’re connected to the Wi-Fi . You don’t have to purchase an internet plan to use the app, though you will need to pay for Wi-Fi if you intend to work on vacation (boo!) or immediately share photos of your dinner on the ‘Gram.
• Check for app and software updates before you sail. You won’t want to use part of your paid internet plan to download them during your cruise.
• Review the app and the Disney Cruise Line Website before you sail for the latest information on availability and features.

Best of all, everyone in your family can download the app and personalize their own shipboard experiences. 

How to Get Started

• Download the app from the Apple App Store for iPhone or Google Play for Android.
• Once onboard, go into your phone's settings and turn on Airplane Mode. This is a smart move even if you don't use the app, because it will turn off your data so you're not smacked with an expensive wireless bill when you get back from your trip.
• Connect to wi-fi on the DCL-GUEST network.
• Now you're ready to go. The app is free and only works on the Disney cruise ship.

Keep a Daytimer for Your Disney Cruise

The paper version of the "Personal Navigator" gives you a full day's schedule, but it's not available until the night before. You'll find the next day's "Personal Navigator" in your stateroom when you return in the evening after dinner. 

One advantage of the Navigator app is that it gives you an overview of all the events for the entire cruise, so you can jump ahead and see what's coming up. Since it gives you the big picture of all your options—a movie that will be screened multiple times on the same cruise, for example—it's great for those of us who like to plan ahead.

Someone in your family doesn't use a smartphone? Let them have the paper "Personal Navigator" all to themselves.

Get a Big-Picture View of Your Disney Cruise

The app is simple to use and very intuitive. The main menu lets you quickly find what you're looking for.

Keep the Day's Activities at Your Fingertips

It's easy to see all the activities happening on the ship—including when they start and where to go—as well as the scheduled activities during your day on Castaway Cay . You can filter activities by age group, so kids, 'tweens and teens can make sure they don't miss any of the fun events at the Oceaneer Lab, Oceaneer Club, Edge, or Vibe. 

When you see an activity or event you like, simply select the heart icon and it will be saved into your personal schedule. Everyone in the family with a smartphone can select their own don't-miss activities and keep his or her own personal schedule.

Chat With Family Members

Keeping tabs on kids is a snap with the chat function, which lets you send and receive text messages with the family members in your stateroom. 

Find Favorite Disney Characters in a Flash

One of the wonderful things about taking a Disney Cruise is being able to meet Disney characters in a more intimate setting that you might find at the theme parks.

The Navigator app lets you know where each character has scheduled appearances with an official Disney photographer. You are always free to take personal photos, so don't forget your camera.

Don't Miss a Thing on Your Disney Cruise

Any activities that you've saved by clicking the heart icon will be stored in a handy personalized schedule. On the fence? Go ahead and save it with a heart. If you change your mind later, just deselect the heart and the activity will be removed from your schedule. 

You'll get an alert 15 minutes before the activity so you won't miss anything. And since different family members can have their own favorites saved, everyone can do what they like.

All About The Disney Cruise Line Navigator App

I f you are planning to go on a Disney Cruise , you’ll want to download the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app. This free Disney cruise app has always been extremely useful when you are onboard the ship because you’ll be able to get information about activities on the ship as well as communicate with your family members. Now, however, it’s essential more than ever.

If you don’t have to pay for WiFi on the ship, and if you don’t want to use roaming cellular data, it can be a great way to communicate with friends and family on board. Here’s what you need to know about the Disney Cruise Line app.

The Disney Cruise Line Navigator App

Getting started: download the app before you go.

Make sure you download the free Disney Navigator app from the app store before you head out on your Disney Cruise. Do it while you are on cellular data or WiFi , and make sure all of your family members have it as well. Don’t wait until you are onboard the ship.

If you already have the app, make sure you are using the latest version. It is regularly updated, so you’ll need to check if you don’t have automatic updates. It’s also a good idea to log in and make sure you know what your ID and password are.

Using the App Before You Go

Originally, the app wasn’t very useful before you got on the ship. Now, however, there are several things that you can do right on the Disney Cruise Line app.

You’ll be able to log into your account, find your sailing, and make modifications and changes to your plans. You’ll find things like spa and fitness appointments, beverage seminars and other onboard activities, Port Adventures, and reservations for adult dining at Remy and Palo . You’ll also be able to see your current plans.

The app offers the same openings that you’ll find on the website, so it’s still a good idea to make those reservations as soon as possible within your booking window. Many of these experiences are very popular with limited openings. If you have multiple sailings booked on the Disney Cruise Line, you’ll be able to choose your specific sailing from the list.

When You Are on the Ship

Go to the onboard chat feature section and add each of your friends or family members. Those in the same stateroom will show up easily, but you’ll need to get a code from others to add them. If you have friends or family in other staterooms, you’ll want to set this up as soon as you can – while you are still on WiFi.

If you have kids in your stateroom, they can use the onboard chat feature but will need your permission. Again, this is something that you may want to do while you are still on cellular data, if possible.

Make sure that you understand what coverage your phone will have before you leave. We turn off all cellular services to avoid charges – but check with your carrier to know exactly what you should do.

When you are on the ship, you can turn on airplane mode, and then enable WiFi, and choose the DCL-Guest network. Even if you don’t purchase the Disney Cruise WiFi, you can still use the app.

In addition, guests can use iMessage on the ship to communicate with other iMessage users (even those off the ship). To do that, you’ll need to connect to the DCL-Guest network but won’t have to pay. This has been extremely useful in communicating with family back home.

If your entire family (on the ship) has iMessage, this can be the best way to communicate on a cruise. Otherwise, the chat option in the app works well.

Get Schedule Information

In past years, a Disney Cruise Line Personal Navigator with full schedule information was provided in your stateroom each evening. Unfortunately, this paper Disney Cruise Navigator is no longer offered at the port or in your room.

You can use the app to find everything you need. While I liked glancing at the paper Navigator, I find the Disney Cruise Line app more helpful since you can sort and view it more easily. You can search by category and sort.

In addition, you can “heart” a specific event, and get a reminder for it, right on your phone. With the app, you can also see the ship’s schedule for every day of your cruise, making it easier to plan.

If you are interested in an event, but the timing isn’t perfect, you can use the app to see if the event is offered later in your cruise.  You can also use the app to get the operating hours of the shops and services on the ship.

Sometimes things do change with the schedule. For instance, one day, on our Castaway Cay day, there was a downpour and we had to leave the island. They ended up adding some additional activities on the ship, and having the app was a great way to stay informed of the changes. 

The app also shows a schedule of the various ports of call during your cruise so you can stay organized during your trip. 

Communicate With Family Members

In the past, it could be difficult to communicate with your family members who were at different places on the ship. Because of the ease of using the app, the wave phones have been removed from the staterooms and everything is now done on the app.

I find that it’s especially helpful with tweens and teens, who always seem to be heading in different directions. My kids especially love the Disney emojis that you can use on the app. My son just kept sending messages filled with various emojis.

It’s important to note, however, that once you are back in port, the app resets. As a result, you won’t be able to see your old messages. If you meet new friends on the ship, you’ll want to get their information before the cruise is over.

You can use the app to see menus for all of the restaurants you’ll be dining at during your cruise. We like looking at future menus, so we can plan out what we’ll be eating.

Find Your Way

The app shows maps and deck plans to help you find your way on your cruise. There are plenty of maps located near the elevators on the ship, but it’s nice to have everything right on the app.

Laundry on the Disney Cruise Line app

While I typically don’t love doing chores on my family vacation, sometimes I do like doing laundry on the Disney Cruise Line. That way, I don’t have to bring quite as much with me, since I can wash clothes and re-wear them during my trip. But when I take away vacation time to do laundry, I don’t want to hover over the machine.

Luckily, the Disney Cruise Line app will alert you when your washer and dryer have finished running. That way, you can go about your vacation, and just pop into the laundry room when you need to.

Check Your Account Balance

No one wants to be surprised with a big bill at the end of their trip. You can look up your account balance and charges at any time on the app. That way, you’ll know how things are adding up without having to make a trip to guest services.

Step-By-Step: How to Use Disney Cruise Line Navigator on Board

The Disney Cruise Line Navigator App is essential when you’re on board the ship, as there is no paper listing of daily events. From home before your cruise, it works like an app version of the Disney Cruise Line website. But once you get on board, you’ll see a whole new look and the app will be your connection to events and information while you’re sailing.

Since you can’t take a spin through the on-board version until you’re, well, on board, take a spin through the overview below. We’ll cover everything from the basics to some pro tips that might even leave your tech-savvy kids asking “Whoa, how did you do that?” By the time you sail, you’ll be an old hand at finding the information you want fast . ( Last updated/republished June 2, 2023.)

Getting Connected Getting Oriented Making Plans – Where to Find What Dining Information in DCL Navigator Using the DCL Navigator Chat Miscellaneous

Getting Connected

If you logged into the Navigator app while you were still ashore, once on board you’ll find looks very different. On land, you log in to the app with the same credentials you use on the Disney Cruise Line website, but on board, you won’t log in at all. Instead, you’ll link your stateroom. This allows everyone in your group to use the app whether they have a website login or not. And, since you’ll access the app from the onboard WiFi, you do not need to buy an internet package to use the app or any of its features.

The steps to link your stateroom below may vary a bit depending on whether you’ve logged into the app from land or not. The screenshots below should be typical if not exact. Start by connecting to the DCL Guest WiFi once you’re on board, then open the app. Tap “Link Your Stateroom”, then fill out the information and “Proceed”.

Although the text says link your  stateroom , you’re really setting up the app for an individual user. If you and your partner (or kids) link to the same stateroom number, you’ll have different chat IDs based on the personal information you gave.

Did one of your kids accidentally link on their phone using your info, and now their phone thinks they’re you in the chat?  No worries — look on the bottom right for “More” and select it, then choose “Help”, then “About this app”.  You’ll see a link to reset the app, after which you can relink it correctly.

Getting Oriented

Want to know where you’re having dinner? The app. What the schedule is in the movie theater? The app. How will you contact your teenagers and tell them you’ll be out of reach in the Rainforest Room? The app. So it’s important to know how to find your way around quickly.

When you first open the app, you’ll be on the Home Screen. How do you know it’s the Home Screen?  On the bottom of the screen is a menu bar; the icons light up to indicate which area you’re currently using. If you’ve used any of Disney’s parks apps such as My Disney Experience or the Disneyland app, this interface will feel a little familiar. Here’s what you’ll find when tapping any of these icons:

• Home: rapid access to the first few items in your plans, plus the day’s itinerary information for the ship
• Explore: all the available activities — we’ll dive into this tab in detail later on.
• Add Plans:  The big plus sign is a shortcut to activities you need to pre-book.
• My Plans: This is the full blow-by-blow of everything in — you guessed it — your plans.  See your whole trip in one place.
• More: Access to a variety of miscellaneous features: view your bill, muster information, etc.

Making Plans – Where to Find What

Today’s ship information.

Clicking Today’s Itinerary on the Home Screen gives you the big picture – weather, what the ship is doing that day, etc. If it’s a port day this is where you’ll find the All Ashore and All Aboard times, as well as information about Emergency Contacts and the Ship’s Agent if you have a problem when you’re ashore. If you’re going ashore, I recommend taking a screenshot of the Contact Information screen to guarantee you have access to these numbers no matter what the internet situation is.

Your Personal Plans

The “My Plans” screen is the way to see all of your plans for the day (or for other days). When you first board, you’ll see three kinds of activities in Your Plans. You’ll always see your assigned dining rotation for the day. You’ll also see anything you pre-booked or reserved such as specialty dining or port adventures. And, “Signature Events” – usually the ship’s evening stage shows – will be added automatically, but can be removed if you don’t want to include them.

The rest of the ship’s daily activities – crafts, trivia, etc. – will be found in the Explore screen. Tap the heart to add any activity so that it appears in the Your Plans tab. Want to take it off later when reviewing your plans? Just tap again to unselect it.  These favorites are specific to you, so if some family members are excited about the midnight movie and others are more interested in Rise ‘n’ Shine Yoga, everyone will see only the things they’ve added.

You’ll get notifications 15 minutes in advance for everything on Your Plans, which I find helpful when I’m lying on deck and not paying attention to the time. I tend to add almost anything from the Explore screen that I might be interested in to my plans, because I find that I spend less time on my phone if I add a bunch of stuff in one burst in the morning and then just ignore anything I decide not to do.

Finding Activities With The Explore Screen

Here’s what you need to know to use this section like a pro. First, many roads lead to Rome. Want to see movie schedules? There are at least four different ways to access them. Disney has worked hard to expose a lot of information so don’t be afraid to tap, tap, tap.

When you first open the Explore tab, there are a few settings that you’ll want to be aware of. By default, activities are shown for the current date, but tapping the Date allows you to switch and see activities for a different day. The Filter lets you select activities based on specific criteria like age range or activity type. And the left-right slider that starts with “Daily Activities” lets you quickly move back and forth between specific venues. Finally, the little ship on the top left can be used to access deck plans.

Dining information is found all over the app.  On the Explore tab, the Dining & Lounges slider section shows you hours for all the dining venues.  You can see which rotational restaurant is serving lunch, and what time Cabanas is open. Clicking any eatery brings up the menu. Just for you, you can see your rotational dining assignment on the Home screen or the Your Plans tab, and you can click to bring up the menu.  Want to see your dining schedule for the whole cruise? You’ll find that on the More tab.

The chat feature of the Navigator app is accessed by tapping the little chat bubble that is visible on many (but not all) screens. If you have new messages, the bubble will have a red dot and a number to show how many new messages you have. If you don’t see the chat bubble, make sure you are on one of the four main screens (Home, Explore, My Plans, or More) and are scrolled all the way to the top of the screen.

If you’ve texted on your phone before, you can use the chat in the Navigator, but there are a few things that are worth a callout. First, people in your cabin will automatically be shown in your chat list.  Want to talk to anyone else?  You’ll need to supply them with your Chat ID, visible above your name, in order to get the conversation going.

You can click the little pencil to the right of your name to change how it is shown in chat — not only on your screen but for those you are chatting with as well. Having your kids change their screen names can be a good way to keep some privacy for your family as they accumulate a long list of chat friends in Edge and Vibe. (Changes are retroactive).

If you don’t care about whether or not your kids change their screen names, you can still count coup on them by changing yours before they do theirs. Who says parents can’t be tech-savvy?

To get alerts when someone messages you, make sure that your phone is set to allow notifications from the app. But one thing that can be frustrating is that this doesn’t always work properly. If you’re waiting for someone to contact you, it might be a good idea to launch the chat and check every now and then.

Swiping left on a chat thread offers different options for individual or group chats. For chats with individuals, you’ll have the option to block the contact, and for a group chat, you’ll have the option to leave the group. In both chat types, you can clear the previous messages (while still leaving the conversation in place), or get more details about participants.

Last but not least, if you had a pop-up message when you first opened Navigator for the day and dismissed it, you can still find it here by switching from Conversations to Notifications.

Here’s a quick list of where to find …

• Your account balance: More tab, then My Charges (you can also download a copy of your Folio online after your cruise).
• Change your purchasing pin: More tab, then My Account; you may need to visit Guest Services to do this in person
• Book a placeholder cruise: you can do this two ways (because Disney is always happy to take your booking for a future cruise).  Either begin from the Home screen, just under the ship image, or from the More screen: 10% off a future cruise.
• Weather: Tap Today’s Itinerary from the Home Screen
• Your full dining rotation: More screen, then Dining Schedule
• Your muster station: More screen, then Emergency Assembly Station; you can also find this on your Key to the World card.

Jennifer Heymont, thank you for the information. While onboard, is there the best way to record the DCL Navigator pages for each day? Is there a way for DCL Guest Services to print the same information? I’ve seen another website called disney cruise blog post hard copies and phone-recorded copies of the ship’s daily navigators. I prefer reading their hard copy. Any suggestions?

Hi Ray, the printed Navigators that you’ve seen copies of on other blogs had already started to be phased out before COVID; they were still available on request but no longer delivered automatically. When sailings returned after a year+ hiatus during COVID, printed Navigators were not offered at all. As recently as September of last year, Disney’s official answer is that there is no printed schedule and you should use the app. ( https://plandisney.disney.go.com/question/hard-copies-daily-navigator-brought-back-found-app-518562/ ). But I have heard that guests are sometimes able to have Guest Services print out a schedule for them. This may depend on how busy they are, etc., etc. – your mileage may vary.

One thing I can suggest: when we sailed with a printed Navigator we never carried it with us, just used it in the room to plan our day. That’s actually one thing I prefer with the app, that I can always have it with me without “taking it away” from anyone else in my family who might want to use it. If you’re comfortable in this “room only resource” mode and you have an iPad or other tablet, the app displays a lot more information per screen on those devices (just because they’re larger) and sometimes it’s easier to use. The downside is that you can only be logged in on one device at a time; if you sign in to the app on an iPad it will log you out on the phone – or at least, that’s what happened to me when I tried it.

To answer your question, no – at least not when I was last on board. I’m not sure when your cruise is, but our cruise expert Erin may have an article coming out in the next few months on what you need to know about the DCL onboard photos. Whether or not you see it before you go, have a great trip!

Is it possible to use the app without paying for any internet service at all and yet have access to all of its features?

Hello, you’ll be connected to the DCL Guest WiFi, which is like a little mini-network that belongs to the ship. The WiFi network can connect to the internet, but you don’t need to. The app runs on the WiFi, which means that you don’t need to access the internet to use it, and as far as I’m aware there are no paid features in the app. Once you’ve paid to get on the ship, you’re good to go!

Can you access all of the app features without paying for any internet?

A Look at the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App Onboard Chat Feature

One of the latest components added to the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App is an Onboard Chat feature. The Onboard Chat allows guest to easily communicate with free text messages with other guests currently sailing on the ship using a unique Chat Number. The Chat Number provides a level of privacy in the event you choose to share your number with a new friend you meet onboard. Unlike with Wave Phone where you basically shared your room number and the handset number you would just share a unique ID with anyone you would like to text with during the cruise.

The primary guest on the reservation will have the authority to allow children under the age of 13 to use the feature with a special activation PIN which can be revoked at anytime. Kids can share their Chat Number with others they may meet onboard and in the clubs without disclosing their personal information or stateroom number. Although, personal information can easily be shared within text messages. You can read more about the security features and such in  DCL’s Navigator App Chat Cruise Contract Addendum .

To use the app you will need a iOS or Android device to install the app. Our daughter does not have either, but we do usually give her an old iPhone that no longer has service to use as a camera during the cruise. You can still use an iPhone without cellular service (basically, it becomes an iPod Touch) to connect to the ship’s wifi and make use of the app.

Now, let us take a look at some screenshots from the iOS version of the DCL Navigator App. As you can see in the image below, your personal Chat Number is visible along with your current list of chats. The interface is fairly similar to the iMessage app.

There is a Welcome Center message with a few useful tips to get you started and some details on how the service works. Note, you’ll receive silent/vibrating alerts to new messages!

I’d like to thank Steve and Amy Hoffman for taking the time to capture screenshots of this newer feature. I say newer as it was added in a September 2014 app update. If you are interested in using the  Disney Cruise Line Navigator App  during your next cruise, it is a good idea to download from your smartphone’s respective app store while still at home or on wifi. The iOS app will download over cellular, but it is still about ~25mb.

Any idea if the chat feature will be available on the Magic soon? We are doing the transatlantic cruise in May and that would be a great feature to have.

There was a fair amount of confusion about the chat feature when we were on the Dream a couple of weeks ago. Some at guest services said that the service was free, others said purchase of an internet package was required. As it turned out, the service was free and it proved to be very useful. We kept a Wave Phone with us just in case our daughter decided to leave the Oceanneer Lab early and they needed to reach us (that NEVER happens) but for our 17 year old it was far easier to text him with the app. I could see Wave Phones being phased out over the next couple of years, with availability of the phones upon request.

I would not be surprised to see voice calls added to the app in the future.

The Wave Phones have been great but they’re much bulkier than most phones today. Adding voice would be great.

Hope this feature is added to the Wonder before our Alaskan cruise in June. Since we carry our phones with us anyway for pictures and the Navigator it would be nice to leave the Wave phones in the room.

Our experience with the app was very spotty last weekend. Many messages took hours to come through, making it useless.

We were on the Fantasy this past week (1/3-1/10) and my wife and I found the chat to be useless. For starters, Wi-Fi on the Fantasy was constantly down. In addition, Kid’s club has NO way of texting you if your child needs to be picked up. We had to rely on the wave phones. Who wants to carry a personal phone along with a wave phone??? The wave phones are useless because they are waterproof. Disney needs to come up with wave phones that are waterproof.

We were on that same cruise and I could never even get the app to work.It worked on my boyfriends phone occasionally and when it did it would only work for a few minutes and then it would act like we weren’t on the ship.It never picked up on my phone,It would act like I wasn’t on the ship and I tried everything I could think of to get it working. We used the wave phones a lot but I would have much rather have used the navigator app to communicate. I hope they perfect it before our next cruise.

We’ve used the app this past December and had problems with the app not delivering messages most of the time. It seems the app would go dormant and disconnect from wifi. When the user would open the phone, wifi would reconnect and the app would deliver all pending messages. The latest update made available last week is supposed to take care of these issues.

There’s no way to search. Or if it there is, none of us could find a way during our 7n cruise.

Finally, we noticed a bug. In order to be reminded of events, you need to mark the activity as a favorite. During the cruise, however, the Captain decided to cancel the signing event, and this was removed from the navigator a couple of days before the event. It also was never printed in the paper navigator. However, at the time the event was to be held, the app reminded us.

It was very buggy on our cruise!

The wifi was buggy!

We used the chat feature on our cruise in December. Unfortunately, since it only notified you of an incoming message if the app was open (i.e. if you were doing something else in the app like looking at the menus) it just wasn’t the wave phone replacement we were hoping for. That said, there was an update on January 7th that claims to fix this – we look forward to testing it.

We used it in December too. Definite improvement over the Wave phones. There was often a delay in receiving texts (sometimes a few hours), and as Leo notes because you didn’t get any notification unless the app was open that was always an extra step to check. It’s a good feature that I’m glad Disney added and I think it’s coming along. Thanks again Scott for this great blog.

It’s a great idea if it would only work. Ours never sent messages and restarted every time we tried to do so. We had to re register every time and it wouldn’t allow our kids on. It’s definitely a great idea in the making. I’m hopeful it will be fixed by November for our next one. I’m not a fane of the phones. They seemed less user fry this time. Last year the texting seemed easier.

While the wave phones were bulky they are better than options elsewhere. Our last cruise was much more pleasant thanks to our ability to TALK to the kids when necessary. I love the idea of texting and hopes it’s working better for our June cruise.

I, for one, hope they don’t add voice. The bandwidth needed to send voice over wifi is MUCH higher than that needed for sending a single, less than 1k, packet of text. I’m not sure that the wifi infrastructure they have on-board could handle the amount of traffic that voice traffic would generate.

I was just wondering, does the App allow you to save the ID codes for the member’s of your group? So if I want to text child#1. the number is in the app stored for me to access it without having to memorize that long ID number?

Would be interested to know if anyone has used it recently and if it has gotten any better.

The app was updated on 10/12/13 and now includes group chat. Hopefully, they fixed the issues.

Does each member of your family need to have their own Disney account to use the text feature?

No, the onboard side of the app is different from what you experience shoreside. Once onboard you are asked to link your onboard reservation using your last name and date of birth. Minors will need to get an access code from the primary guest to use the chat.

Cell phone on the cruise?

We're going on our first Disney Cruise ? What do you need to do to your cell phone to be able to use it to text on the Disney Cruise App but not incur additional charges. We're not purchasing wifi.

Open DCL app and use for messaging. If you have iOS devices, it has been reported on most if not all of the ships that iMessage works free as well now.

If you leave your phone in airplane mode and don't purchase any internet and don't care about the free 50mb internet, you really don't have to turn off auto-update for your apps. That is really only necessary when you have internet to use so that your internet isn't drained by background apps refreshing and such. If you are only going to use the DCL app, just putting the phone in airplane mode, then connecting to the DCL wifi on board, will work for the DCL app.

Earning my ears.

Stop by the Connect@Sea desk on the first day of your cruise; they have a pamphlet there that walks you through how to make sure everything is turned off for your cruise. It goes step-by-step, which makes it really simple! As of my most recent cruise on the Fantasy in May 2019, iMessages (iPhone to iPhone texts) are included and you do not need to use WiFi on the ship for these messages. You just can't send pictures for free. And of course using the DCL app on board is free too. So it should be very easy to stay in touch with the rest of your party on the ship, and if you have an iPhone, anyone back on land who also uses an iPhone. Have a great trip! Editing to add: I believe they also have CMs who work at the Connect@Sea desk (during certain hours, not around-the-clock); they should also be able to help you with any technology needs during your vacation!

Sorry, maybe I'm not being totally clear. You do have to connect to Wifi to send iMessages to other iPhones, but Disney does not charge you for the wifi used, unless you send photos.

Our cruise last week was the first one for us that had functional iMessage. Upon boarding I did the typical, as previously stated (airplane mode, connect to DCL-GUEST network) and just use the app. I typically do not get any internet since I am on vacation. With this cruise I was able to text normally on iMessage. Only texted with family on the ship on sea days. My phone seemed to get iMessages pretty quickly. The DCL app messages worked better than in the past but still slower. DW used both to send messages and my incoming iMessages to her phone seemed slower. Maybe it was her phone since it is a little older than mine. In port our international plan and/or DCL connection worked to send messages but not sure which. As for international, many plans have options and some are free. We hit a couple different countries and there is a roaming charge for calls but data and texts are free, just slower than you usually experience.

I used the free iMessages on the fantasy early September. It worked great. It is iPhone to iPhone messaging only. You turn on airplane mode and dcl WiFi. We could message each other and folks at home. We could not send pictures. My friend on the Magic used it too.

There is messaging within the DCL app. You get a code in the app, provide your code to another phone to set up communication between the two phones. We set it up but didn't really use it as we were together for most of the time. Maybe others can comment on how well it works. re: using the data plans on the ships, free 50 MB and others - Your phone can gobble up the data quickly. It's not just auto updating of the apps that needs to be disabled. A lot of apps can and will transfer data in the background. On my Android phone (Galaxy S8) > Settings > apps > app name > mobile data > Allow background data usage > slide switch for on or off. Do you really need to sync all of those photos you are taking with your cloud storage? Send huge video files in messages? After seeing the data evaporate quickly the first time, I checked every app to disable background data usage. A couple of tips - Verizon has a feature - Travel Pass. For $10 per 24 hour period, it is supposed to give you the same plan you have at home, at a foreign location. We used it in Nassau and at Castaway Cay. Data and messaging were rather slow, to the point I wasn't sure if the messages I sent were going to get through. What did work was the phone calls. It has to be enabled (at home), and is activated at first use. It is not for use on board, only in port / close to port. There are waterproof pouches on lanyards available from multiple sources. The come in handy when you want to take photos / video over the side of the ship. Slip it over your neck and you don't have to worry about dropping your phone over the edge. I recorded some rather nice video of the lights illuminating the water at night on the Fantasy.

Guide to Disney Cruise WiFi: Tips and FAQs

While I typically enjoy unplugging on my Disney cruises, sometimes it’s important to stay connected to the outside world. Disney Cruise WiFi is available for an additional cost, and while it isn’t as fast or reliable as a land WiFi connection, it does work pretty well. It’s a good option if you do need to stay connected at sea.

If you are taking a Disney Cruise and are thinking of purchasing a WiFi package, this post will help you decide what level to purchase and will help you know what to expect from your coverage.

Disclosure: I received complimentary WiFi on media sailings and have also paid for my own WiFi packages. All opinions are my own.

When you are on your sailing, you’ll want to put your phone in airplane mode . While cellular at sea is sometimes available, it can be quite expensive. Purchasing a WiFi package is typically the most affordable option if you want to stay connected.

AT&T and Verizon do have cruise ship packages that are separate from the Disney Cruise Line Wi-Fi. I prefer using the ship’s WiFi, however. If you want to use one of these programs, you’ll want to contact them to make sure it’s added to your cell phone in advance. You’ll need to have this feature activated in advance.

IMPORTANT: You’ll want to talk to your cell phone carrier before your trip to make sure you understand how your phone works internationally. They will likely recommend that you put your phone in airplane mode while at sea. Taking it out of airplane mode can lead to some very high charges.

Disney Cruise WiFi Packages and Pricing

There are three levels of packages on the Disney Cruise Line. These are the Stay Connected, the Basic Surf, and the Premium Surf. Within these categories, you have the option to purchase WiFi for 24 hours, or the entire length of your cruise. Disney Cruise Wi-Fi pricing is based on the cruise period’s length or 24 hours.

If you think you’ll want WiFi just to look up something quickly, the 24-hour option is a good choice. Otherwise, you’ll save money by getting an entire length of cruise package rather than purchasing daily individual 24-hour packages.

The type of package you’ll need will depend on what you are doing. If you want to stream short videos or make video calls, you’ll need the Premium Package, while the Stay Connected package is best if you only want to look up text. Generally, long-form video streaming, like TV shows or movies, is not supported under any of these programs.

When I sail on the Disney Cruise Line, I typically purchase the Basic Surf package. It lets me send and upload photos, but I don’t need the streaming functionality.

The price per day of the WiFi packages ranges from $16 for one day of Stay Connected when purchasing the full voyage to $42 per day for the Premium Package when only buying one day.

So, is the Disney Cruise WiFi reliable? In my experience, it’s somewhat reliable, but not as fast as you’d expect for a land connection, and sometimes drops off. If you require more bandwidth, it’s a good idea to purchase the Premium Package.

What Can You Do Without Disney Cruise Wi-Fi?

So, do you need to have WiFi while on a Disney Cruise? There are still some things you can do without purchasing a WiFi package (or using Cellular at Sea).

The Disney Cruise Line Navigator App works even if you don’t purchase the package. You’ll be able to check schedules, look at your folio, and book experiences through the app. You’ll just need to connect to the DCL-GUEST network (and make sure your phone is in Airplane mode).

In addition, with app access, you’ll also be able to message guests directly through the app. It can make keeping in touch very easy. Everyone will need to have their own copy of the app loaded on their devices.

If you use the Apple iMessage system, you can send text iMessages to other users both on and off the ship. So, if you wanted WiFi just to stay in touch at home, you may not need it.

How to Connect to WiFi

Once you are on the ship, you can put your phone in Airplane mode and then connect to the DCL-GUEST network. From there, you can either stay with free access to the app or purchase a 24-hour or length of cruise internet package. If you purchase a package, it can be charged directly to your room to make it very easy.

International Day Pass/TravelPass

Some cellular phone providers offer an international day pass option. With this, you’ll pay a flat fee for 24 hours and will be able to use your phone just as you use it at home (with the same data, text, and phone package).

It’s important to know that these programs work in participating foreign countries, but do not work at sea. If you are hoping to use this program while at sea, you may find yourself with many unexpected charges.

Check with your cell phone provider directly to learn about these programs, and to find out if you are eligible. Just remember you can only use it at a port (in a participating country) and not when at sea. Your cell phone provider can let you know which countries are part of this program. You’ll need to have it activated on your phone before using it.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, you’ll purchase a WiFi package once you are onboard and connected to the DCL-GUEST network.

If you want to do that, you’ll need to purchase multiple packages.

Except for the uses mentioned above, free WiFi isn’t available. You’ll need to purchase a package to use the ship’s satellite WiFi.

In the past, the WiFi was billed by the usage but it’s since changed over to this new system. I prefer paying by the day because it was always difficult to know how many MBs I would use.

My husband and I recently returned home from a weeklong “Historic South & Golden Isles” sailing aboard the new, upscale and modern “American Eagle,” a 100-passenger coastal catamaran ship that departs from Amelia Island (Fernandina), Fla., and ends in Charleston, S.C.

Our itinerary also included port-of-calls in Brunswick, Ga., Savannah, Ga. (overnight), and Hilton Head and Beaufort, S.C., (overnight) as we cruised the Intracoastal Waterway taking in all the amazing Lowcountry scenery along the way.

Having loved our many European river cruises, I didn’t know what to expect cruising throughout the United States. Well, we’re sold. “American Eagle” exceeded our expectations.

The menus are short and sweet without any confusion when ordering. Breakfast in the dining room offers the most menu choices including a feature of the day.

In Brunswick, Georgia, the feature was beef tenderloin with eggs, lobster scampi & breakfast potatoes (I know, I know), plus made-to-order omelets, French toast, oatmeal, specialty quiches and the usual sides – bacon, sausage, grits. (A casual breakfast/lunch is offered every day in the outdoor café).

Our lunch choices included fried green tomato BLT, Napoleon lemon dill crab salad, or Brunswick stew. Dinner has two appetizers (corn chowder soup or iceberg wedge salad) and 3 entrees: Southern BBQ pork chop, crab-crusted salmon or pan-seared sea bass. Wine and beer and soft drinks are complimentary during lunch and dinner, and homemade desserts are a big deal with this crowd.

Following dinner, many guests head back to the main lounge for live entertainment, featuring local musical guests, comedians, magicians and storytellers – and yes, the open bar is available to all.

To be clear, American Cruise Lines is not for everyone. It is not for families with young children. It is not for honeymooners wanting a tropical island beach vacation during the day and a heart-pounding late-night disco dance party. There is no onboard pool, casino, shopping, fancy spa, Broadway shows, 24/7 room service, activities or entertainment. It is the total opposite of Disney or Vegas or Carnival Cruises.

It is also not an inexpensive cruise line. ACL is a small, intimate experience for adults wanting to see and explore the United States in an upscale and comfortable environment – without long lines and crowds. (Some New England and Columbia & Snake River summer itineraries are popular with multi-generational groups – without young children.)

Here are a few of my favorite ACL “American Eagle” experiences during our “Historic South & Golden Isles” sailing :

• Easy and seamless walking on and off the ship at every port of call. In Savannah we were docked in front of the River Walk, smack in the heart of this historic and beautiful city.
• The new, modern and luxurious onboard décor. Very light and airy throughout the ship. Spacious public areas and staterooms/suites, including a surprisingly large sun deck with comfy lounge chairs and a track for scenic walking.
• Shore excursions, especially the “Alligator Wildlife Exploration” in the Sea Pines Resort Forest in Hilton Head and the “Pat Conroy’s Writing Exploration” and “Beaufort Movie Walking Tour” (”The Big Chill,” “Prince of Tides,” “Forest Gump,” “The Great Santini”) in beautiful Beaufort, South Carolina.
• Eating breakfast or lunch outdoors on the Sky Lounge verandah overlooking the back of the ship and all the Lowcountry scenery on both sides.
• All-inclusive cruising – no nickel and diming. Fares include all onboard farm-to-table meals and snacks, wifi, evening cocktails, entertainment, enrichment programs, beer and wine with lunch and dinner, tips and gratuities, and so much more.

Before you book an American Cruise Line vacation, be sure to ask your travel advisor what style of ship you will be on. There are distinct differences (interior & exterior) between the riverboats, paddle-wheelers and coastal cruise ships. Many of the itineraries include a pre-cruise hotel stay with transfers and some extend complimentary airfare and special promotions.

What types of mobile devices support the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app?

You can use the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app on most mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets that run on either Apple IOS or Android operating systems. (Please note that the app will not function on Blackberry or Windows phones.)

You can download the latest version of the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app from the Apple iTunes App StoreSM for iOS devices or from Google Play™ for Android devices free charge. (Unfortunately, the app is currently unavailable for download in Japan.)

While the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app is free to download, standard data charges may apply. We do recommend that you download the app prior to your departure date. Onboard the ship, it will only launch when connected to the DCL-GUEST wireless network.

Use of the DCL-GUEST wireless network is also complimentary when used to support the Navigator app. But be aware that using our onboard Wi-Fi for other activities, including downloading the Navigator app, email and surfing the Internet, is subject to additional charges. That’s why we recommend downloading this app at home.
