Grand Canyon Tours from Sedona

Before You Go

The most popular activity at the Grand Canyon is walking along the rim and enjoying the breathtaking views. If you want a more exciting or adventurous experience, you do have a few options. Here are some of our recommendations:

  • Hike Below the Rim:  Only a small percentage of Canyon visitors actually step into the Canyon. Hiking trails are well marked, and venturing into the Canyon can be more exciting than sticking to the top of the rim.
  • Ride a Mule:  Hiking isn’t for everyone and the trek out of the rim can be tiring. Instead of hiking, why not let a mule do all of the work? Your guide will provide interesting commentary you wouldn’t otherwise get on your own, and you can focus on the views instead of your footsteps. Make sure you book well in advance – mule rides book up quite quickly.
  • Bike the Rim:  Walking the rim can take quite some time! You can cover more ground on bike without giving up too much of the freedom you get with walking.

Get  more details about these activities   from the official Grand Canyon site.

It’s important to plan the day’s activities before you arrive at the park so you don’t waste any time when arrive. If planning isn’t your forte, there are a number of guided tours available out of Las Vegas, NV. Plus, guided tours often offer activities you can’t access by simply visiting the park, such as helicopter rides into the Canyon and SUV and ATV adventures.

Even if all you have is a point-and-shoot camera, you can come home with great photos of the Grand Canyon. Take a look at our photography guide for ideas.

Getting There

The drive from Sedona, AZ to the Grand Canyon is easy: simply take 89A north to I-40, then head west until you come to US-180, at which point you turn north and drive till you arrive at the Grand Canyon. You’ll pass through Flagstaff, AZ and the Kaibab National Forest, so be prepared for stunning views and vivid colors, especially in the autumn.

After passing through Flagstaff, you’ll have one last chance to buy food and drink at the Grand Canyon Village. Prices in the Village are a little higher than they are in Sedona, so planning ahead will save you both time and money, and a cooler packed with ice will come in handy after a long walk or hike.

Once You Arrive

The Grand Canyon is one of the top destinations for national park visitors, so there’s a good chance you’ll be joined by many other drivers looking for a place to park. Most people stay at the park for at least a few hours, so waiting around for someone to leave their spot only burns valuable time. Instead, take the first parking spot you see and simply hop on one of the park’s free, frequent shuttle buses.

If at any point you get tired of walking, no problem! Along the rim you’ll see a number of bus stops where you can catch the  free shuttle

Combine Your Trip

Take your Grand Canyon adventure to the next level by combining it with a Las Vegas vacation. There are many guided tours available from Las Vegas, and they offer great flexibility in terms of location, dates, times, and activities. Get your adrenaline pumping on a rafting trip down the Colorado river , experience unparalleled views deep into the Canyon from a helicopter , or simply avoid the stress of driving by taking a guided luxury bus tour . A professional tour guide can help you learn more, see more, and relax more, so that you can make the most of your Canyon visit.

Great day, Great driver, Great experience. Viator review: Excellent experience to the Grand Canyon. Starting in Sedona we had a beautiful drive to Flagstaf then on to the Canyon. At first glance, Kolb Studio appears to be just an old house perched on the rim of the canyon.

grand canyon tours from sedona arizona

Desert View Watchtower: 30 minutes

Near the eastern edge of Grand Canyon National Park , where the Colorado River begins to turn north and the Painted Desert stretches toward the  Navajo  and  Hopi  Reservations, a 70-foot-tall circular stone structure perched on the South Rim draws visitors’ attention. What at first glance appears to be an ancient Native American ruin, made with reddish sandstone, this tallest structure on the South Rim is actually a well-planned, relatively modern building that architect  Mary Colter  designed for the Fred Harvey Company.

Although the Great Depression slowed tourism at the Grand Canyon somewhat, the Fred Harvey Company continued to look for ways to expand its services and economic opportunities. The Desert View Watchtower was one of several construction projects the Company initiated in the 1930s, many of them Colter designs. Like  Hopi House , another Grand Canyon structure that Colter developed for Fred Harvey, this building played into the Company’s reputation as a purveyor and promoter of Native American arts, crafts, and culture.

When you finally reach the South Rim, disembark at the Grand Canyon Village for incredible photo opportunities at multiple viewpoints nearby . Take some time to explore and enjoy lunch with your companions (lunch is not included).

As the train experience is only one-way, your ride home will be by bus/van. But this will allow you to pick up a homemade craft or two from Cameron Trading Post!

From Sedona to the Grand Canyon: 5 Best Ways to Get There

Written by Michael Law and Lana Law Updated May 11, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Authors Michael and Lana Law spent many winters living in Sedona and visiting the Grand Canyon was always one of their favorite things to do.

From Sedona to the Grand Canyon South Rim is just over 100 miles , and although the trip should take 2.25 hours, it will most likely take much longer due to the incredible scenery along the way. Beautiful vistas will have you turning off the highway and grabbing your camera more often than you may expect.

A variety of transport options are on offer and include self drive, tours, and a shuttle/train combo. The highway route is very well marked, and two options present themselves at Flagstaff. The route along scenic highway 180 is recommended for the incredible variety of landscapes, ranging from soaring mountains and tall pine forests to wide-open, high desert plains with Pinon Pines.

Be prepared for some sections of busy single-lane roads and limited passing opportunities, especially for the first half of the trip. If you are in a rush, it will only end in frustration; slow down and get into a Sedona Zen state of mind before heading out.

The purpose of your trip may define the type of transport option you choose. Self drive offers the greatest flexibility. If you'd rather sit back and relax and let someone else worry about the driving, take a tour. To mix it up a bit, take a shuttle/train combo and get the best of both modes of transport. If budget is not an issue, take a private guided tour in a luxury vehicle.

1. From Sedona to the Grand Canyon by Car

View over the Grand Canyon from Desert View Drive

Driving the route from Sedona to the Grand Canyon starts on the twisty and winding Highway 89A . Set deep in Oak Creek Canyon, this scenic route takes you past some of Sedona's best hiking trails and campgrounds . Eventually the road meets the end of the canyon, and you'll begin a steep, twisty ascent, complete with very tight hairpin bends and drop-offs. Note that the highway has a 50-foot overall limit, and it is strongly recommended that large RVs not take this route.

Stop in at the rest areas at the top of the ascent to relax at the wonderful viewpoint out over Oak Canyon; occasionally local artisans will have their handmade goods for sale. The road then continues on to Flagstaff, an ideal place to grab a coffee or a snack, or to take a walk around the historical center of town. Follow the signs for Highway 180 , and as you head out of town keep an eye out for 12,633-foot-high Mount Humphreys, home of Arizona Snowbowl, one of Arizona's best downhill ski resorts .

The road then descends past smaller peaks and eventually emerges from the forest into the high desert scrub and pinyon pine trees. Take a right where Highway 180 joins Highway 64 , and pass through Grand Canyon Village before entering the park and the South Rim area.

An alternate route , about five minutes faster, is to exit onto Interstate 40, head west, and take the exit for Highway 64 north at Williams. This route is easier due to the divided highway section but much less scenic, as you'll miss the peaks north of Flagstaff. A good option is to do a loop where you take Highway 180 on the way there and the Highway 64 and Interstate 40 combo on the way back to Sedona.

2. From Sedona to the Grand Canyon by Tour

Tourists on Mather Point at the Grand Canyon

If you don't have your own car or the thought of a 4.5-hour round-trip drive on twisty roads gives you pause, a tour is an excellent option. Sedona is a tourist town and has a wonderful assortment of first-class operators providing well regarded tours that include hotel pickup and drop-off.

One good option is the Sedona/Grand Canyon Deluxe Tour . Limited to 14 people, it has an exclusive feel. The tour heads up Oak Creek Canyon and through Flagstaff and on to the Grand Canyon. At the South Rim, you'll have time to wander around and soak up the views and perhaps grab a bite to eat.

The tour then continues along the South Rim, stopping along the way at the famous Desert View Watchtower. From here, the drive leads onwards through the Navajo Nation, stopping in at the historical Cameron Trading Post for a bit of shopping before finally finishing back in Sedona.

If you are interested in the Native American history of the region, the Full-Day Grand Canyon Complete Tour is a good option. This tour, which runs in the reverse direction of the one described above, takes in the fascinating natural volcanic phenomenon at Sunset Crater and the historic ruins at Wupatki, and includes a stop at Cameron Trading Post, where Navajo artisans showcase their work. The tour then runs along the East Rim of the Grand Canyon past the Desert View Watchtower before stopping in at Grand Canyon Village, where you'll have time to wander around and be astounded by the stunning views. The trip then departs and returns back to Sedona.

3. From Sedona to the Grand Canyon by Train

Grand Canyon trail at the railway station at the Grand Canyon

Railway buffs and those looking for something a bit different may want to take the train to the Grand Canyon. The train carriages, dating from 1901, have been beautifully restored to their original glory. The train passes through forested areas and then emerges to the high desert plains, eventually stopping at the South Rim railway station. The entire route is narrated by knowledgeable and friendly train staff. Keep your eyes out for a pre-departure Wild West shootout and possible bandits along the way!

Although the train does not leave from Sedona, it does leave from Williams, approximately 75 minutes away. Independent travelers with a car can drive to Williams and purchase Grand Canyon Railway train tickets and take the train to and from the Grand Canyon.

Another option is to take the Grand Canyon Railroad Excursion from Sedona , which is a full-day tour that includes all transportation. This tour provides transport from Sedona to Williams, a one-way train trip to the Grand Canyon, and then coach transport from the Grand Canyon along the East Rim and back down through the Navajo Nation with a stop in at the Cameron Trading Post for shopping before returning to Sedona.

The train departs daily at 9:30am and returns back to Williams at 6:45pm. The train ride itself is two hours, 15 minutes each way. You'll have three hours to explore the Grand Canyon. During the busiest season in the summer, additional departures from Williams may be added.

It's best to book the train well in advance during the high season that runs from April through September.

4. From Sedona to the Grand Canyon by Rideshare

Car driving to the Grand Canyon

A good mid-range option for those who think convenience trumps cost is rideshare. With this option, you can set your pickup time and location and let someone else do the driving. Booking is easy via the UBER or Lyft apps on your smartphone.

This option is especially attractive if you are traveling in a group of four, and the cost can be split among the riders. Prior to booking, pop on either one of the apps and get an estimate of the cost. If you are looking for a round-trip price, your driver will probably be willing to arrange a less costly return trip outside of the ridesharing app.

When making the arrangements with your driver, ensure that they take the more scenic route along Highway 180. The rideshare app will likely want to route you along the Interstate and Highway 64. This route is about five minutes shorter but significantly less enjoyable.

Train buffs without a car may want to make arrangements to go to Williams via rideshare and catch the train to/from the Grand Canyon.

5. From Sedona to the Grand Canyon by Private Shuttle with a Guide

Grand Canyon and the Colorado River

For the ultimate in personalized service and to get to hidden spots where mass market tours can't go, sign up for a private shuttle. The Private Grand Canyon Tour from Sedona takes place in a late-model luxury SUV, and hotel pickup is included. One of the highlights is a lunch (included in the price) at a historic lodge, once the hideout of President Teddy Roosevelt.

Your driver will work with you to ensure you see all the highlights plus some that most people don't get to see. The private shuttle service has a maximum of six people. Park admission is included in the rate. The trip takes anywhere from eight to 12 hours.

Grand Canyon from Sedona

Consider making a detour stop in Sedona if you're driving to the Grand Canyon from Phoenix or Scottsdale. Sedona, Arizona was named "The Most Beautiful Place in America" in USA Weekend's Annual Travel Report and is a mecca for artists, film-makers, energy healers, UFO enthusiasts… In other words, Sedona is as interesting as it is breathtakingly beautiful. The things you might want to experience while in Sedona are shopping, hiking, energy work, raw cuisine, art galleries, and outdoor adventure tours. Sedona area tours can range from guided yoga hikes to hot air balloon rides with champagne picnics. Explore Native American ruins by day and treat yourself to a luxurious resort by night.

We recommend staying a night or two in Sedona first, then taking a day or overnight tour from Sedona to the Grand Canyon. Sedona-Grand Canyon tours are usually van tours that drive visitors through some of Arizona's most scenic country, spending a full day exploring the South Rim and the 2-hour route to and fro. Another option is to book a helicopter tour from Sedona, or better yet, a combination of a van tour to the South Rim, and a helicopter over the Canyon upon arrival.

Some may choose to stay overnight at the Rim, but don't underestimate the value of "bookending" your trip with nights in Sedona. With a Sedona-Grand Canyon vacation, you'll enjoy the best of both destinations and be able to fully explore all that northern Arizona has to offer.

Fri 6/14: Evening flight to Phoenix, Sky Harbor. Overnight in Scottsdale .

Sat 6/15: Leave Scottsdale by 9am and drive to GCNP. Lunch either in Flagstaff or Cameron. Enter the park via the east gate, with stops at Desert View, Lipan, Moran and Grandview overlooks. Plan to hike the Shoshone Point trail. Staying for 3 nights at the Maswik Lodge . A walk on the rim trail in the village area for sunset.

Sun 6/16: Bike the Hermit Road in the morning (we may get the shuttle package). Afternoon, two adults will go for mule rides from 12-3pm. A visit to buildings & Hopi House, Mather Point, Geology Museum & Yavapai Point. Plan to do a hike on Bright Angel Trail in late afternoon to the Resthouse - or stop where we feel like it as I am aware of the uphill effort.

Mon 6/17: Drive out to GCNP airport for the 8am air tour, ending around 12pm. By time we drive back into the park it would be mid-afternoon. Plan to go to Yaki point and perhaps a hike on the South Kaibab trail to Ooh Ahh point – or we should do this hike the next morning instead? I also have a fear of heights and that could be a deal breaker. Any insights for me to be aware (or scared) of? We will be using hiking sticks (typically a pair) and wearing hiking boots. We won’t take our girl on the hike as I heard that it’s not kid friendly.

Tue 6/18: Drive from GCNP via the south gate to Sedona. Take a quick stroll and lunch in Williams. Drive east on 40 and down 89A, with stops at Oak Creek Vista, Midgley Bridge, Slide Rock State Park (TBD based on the line). Question about Midgley Bridge – is a hike required to see the bridge or it is visible from a specific overlook? Staying 3 nights in Sedona - the place is on 179, by Hillside Sedona and is within walking distance of the Marg’s Draw Trailhead.

Wed 6/19: 9am Pink Jeep Tour (Broken Arrow). Afternoon stroll in Tlaquepaque Village. Plan to hike the Marg’s Draw trail in late afternoon.

Thu 6/20: Plan an early morning hike at Bell Rock Loop (or just climb the Bell Rock). After breakfast, drive to West Sedona – Dry Creek Road, Boynton Pass Road. Question – On Boynton Pass Rd going west to Fay Canyon Trailhead, how far west and/or east (or where exactly) should we go on the road to get a nice view of Boynton Canyon? We don’t plan to hike (unless it’s a short hike) or drive the whole Red Rock Loop. Should we also drive up the Boynton Canyon Road (direction of the Enchantment Resort )? Is there a public parking or the overlook to view the canyon on that road? Afternoon, a drive on Red Rock Loop Road: Upper Read Rock Loop, Lover’s Knoll, Crescent Moon Picnic Area, Red Rock Crossing.

Fri 6/21: Plan to hike Cathedral Rock in early morning. After lunch, drive to Scottsdale via the Red Rock Scenic Byway, stop at Chapel of the Holy Cross. Overnight in Scottsdale.

Sat 6/22 – 10:30am flight at Sky Harbor.

Which day should we fit a stop at the Airport Vista? Don’t plan to hike there, just a stop at the scenic overlook. Maybe on 6/18 before we check-in - or 6/20 before we drive the Dry Creek Road?

Based on where we stay, would there be additional (closer) options to get groceries besides Whole Foods in West Sedona? We need to cook meals as our daughter requires a specific diet.

A decent though somewhat overly detailed plan. Think of it as more of a guide or wish list. Don’t ever leave a place that you’re still enjoying, just to get to another place on your list.

Remember that late afternoon will be the hottest time of day. Plan your hikes and strenuous activities for mornings.

Also seems like a very active Grand Canyon plan for a 6 year old. Hopefully she can keep up.

grand canyon tours from sedona arizona

You might want to consider doing some activity for the 6 year old. Perhaps, Bearzonia between the Grand Canyon and Sedona . You know your child but I think so much time at the Grand Canyon is a big ask for their attention span. I think the activity level is fine for children but it is more of having the maturity to understand and appreciate what they are seeing. After awhile, it is just becomes days and days of looking at rocks in a big hole over and over. You can have them do a Jr. Ranger booklet but it will likely be complete within a couple of hours.

Thanks, dbmove! My fear of heights is manageable as long as I don't stand too close to the edge (unless there are rails or grabbing my husband's arms or a tree!). If there is someone in front of me on a downhill hike, I would be fine. I don't think I'll be able to do Angels Landing hike in Zion or the Half Dom hike in Yosemite. I guess it'll play it by ear onsite and if I'm too comfortable, I'll just turn back. For the girl, yes, totally agree that she won't appreciate it as much at this age. The Jr. Ranger program sounds good, I'll check out the details as well as kids activities in Williams. She loves horses; a pony/horse ride would make her day!

The drive on Dry Creek Rd will be obvious. Turn around at Fay Canyon or Doe Mtn trailhead.

That's helpful. Thanks RedRox!

Explore Arizona's Wine Regions

An Unexpected Vintage

Wine Country

Wineries in arizona.

Arizona's diversity shines through in its people, its experiences and even its landscapes — a choice few of which present the perfect conditions for growing grapes.

Will travel for wine? Arizona entered the wine business back in the 1970s and created a wine culture today that honors the agricultural bounty of the state’s high deserts and the dedication of the people who tend the vines at more than 30 wineries in Arizona. Tasting rooms have elevated Arizona’s wine reputation even in areas far removed from the vineyards. Restaurants and bars statewide, in small towns and big cities, have added the flavors of Arizona to their menus. Wherever your travels take you, cheers to Arizona.

Southern Arizona Wine Country

With climate and soil conditions comparable to wine regions in California and Argentina, Arizona’s southern high deserts made the state a major player in international wine circles. Willcox and Sonoita are the most prolific Arizona wine regions, with their vast valley farmlands producing nearly three quarters of the state’s grapes to produce award-winning Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Merlot varietals. Sonoita was the first location in Arizona to be designated as an American Viticultural Area. Willcox followed and the Verde Valley recently joined the trio. See the handiwork of passionate growers and makers at the tasting rooms in Sonoita and Willcox during your wine country tour of Southern Arizona.

North & Central Arizona Wine Country

The neighboring cities of Cottonwood, Clarkdale, Jerome, Cornville, Camp Verde and Sedona have created a vibrant wine culture in central Arizona. The Verde Valley’s climate has much in common with Mediterranean wine growing regions. Volcanic soils, mild winters and summers with hot days and cool nights produce grapes with thick skins, dark colors and big flavors. Tasting rooms transformed Old Town Cottonwood from a sleepy historic main street into a bustling collection of shops and eateries that attract visitors year-round. Wineries in Cornville and Sedona set up their tasting rooms along the banks of beautiful Oak Creek, and even rugged Jerome and Camp Verde show their softer side with fine wine pairings at area eateries. Plus, wine growing is literally part of the curriculum at Yavapai College, where its Southwest Wine Center operates a student-run estate vineyard that offers vine-to-bottle education.

Plan your trip and download our Arizona Wine brochure, Savoring Arizona , and get started exploring the state's burgeoning wine regions.
