When to visit: As most of the country enjoys temperate weather year-round, there's no bad time to visit Brazil. Cooler weather makes the country pleasant to visit from April to November, while treks to the Amazon and Pantanal are best experienced during the drier months from June to August.

Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro is nothing if not exhilarating. Marvel at the spectacular views over the city from Sugar Loaf Mountain and Christ the Redeemer, feel the pulse of the local people, known as Cariocas, on the beaches of Copacabana.

The Amazon is simply the world’s greatest bio-system. The Amazon River is the second biggest river in the world and passes through the region of Amazonia. At this location the black waters of Rio Negro mix with the claycoloured waters of Rio Solimoes.

The sultry city of Salvador is famous for its cultural heritage which is expressed in its passionate music and dance. Salvador is home to extraordinary colonial architecture, said to be the best preserved in the Americas.

The Pantanal is largely composed of swamp terrain and contains an abundance of wildlife, including marsh deer, giant otters, jabirus and the endangered jaguar. Locals travel around the area on horseback which is also popular with travellers.

Paraty & Ilha Grande

Paraty is a preserved colonial town that still remains nearly as it was in the 17th century. Combine a stay in this beautiful town with a stay at Ilha Grande, famous for its tropical scenery and gorgeous beaches.

Originally settled by European pirates and slave traders, the town of Buzios, only two hours from Rio de Janeiro, has been nominated as one of the top ten most beautiful places in the world thanks to its amazing beaches.

In general it should be noted that prices in Brazil are higher than in other parts of Latin America, and that the hunt for a dirt-cheap locally-crafted item will not be as rewarding on the pocket as you might hope when compared to Colombia, Bolivia, or Peru. However, there are good bargains to be tracked down in certain spots. A few cool Items to buy while in Brazil are Havaianas flip flops (you have entire shops dedicated to them) - The famous Carioca male swiming suit "Sunga" or female " Biquíni". - Cachaҫa: Be aware that this alcohol is infamous for driving drinkers crazy. - A Brazilian football jersey. - Brazilian music: listen to Bossa Nova, Samba and Forro. - Precious Stones: Cheap! Shopping hours: Mon-Sat 0900-1900. Supermarkets are open Mon-Sat 0800-2200. Major shopping centres also open on Sundays 1500-2100. All the above times are subject to local variations and many shops open until late in the evenings, especially in December.

Brazilians have less sense of personal space than North Americans and are not bothered being packed together in crowded public places. They are physically expressive and convey emotional information through touch. While in some societies touching has sexual overtones, Brazilians equate it with friendship and a show of concern. Women tend to touch more than men and greet others with kisses on both cheeks, but men also welcome each other with hearty pats on the back and bear hugs. Such informality extends to conversation. Brazilians usually address teachers, doctors, priests, and other professionals using their title followed by their first name—Professor João, Doutora Maxine or Presidente Henrique. Still, body language and terms of address vary with an individual's social standing. University graduates or, at times, even those who appear to be well educated, are addressed as doutor or doutora (doctor). Brazilians also have relaxed attitudes towards nudity and toward the body in general. Witness the scanty costumes of carnival performers which consist of little more than a wisp of fabric and a few feathers, and the tiny string bikinis—called "dental floss" (fio dental) in Brazilian slang—that women of all shapes, sizes, and ages wear on Brazil's public beaches.

Yellow Fever occurs in Brazil and depending on a travellers itinerary, vaccination may be recommended and in some cases certification of this is required. Those returning to Australia within six days of visiting Brazil will be required to present a valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate. Please consult a medical practitioner or contact The Travel Doctor for your specific risk and requirements when travelling to Brazil. Australians travelling to Brazil should also ensure that they have adequate travel insurance to cover the length of their stay. For further information please visit the  Smartraveller website

Electricity

The electricity voltage in Brazil varies between 110V and 220V depending on the location. Many hotels offer wall sockets in both voltages, and it is easy to find portable voltage transformers in construction shops. To purchase electrical or modem adapters, or for further information on this matter, please view the Korjo adapter guide at www.korjo.com.au .

In most restaurants and bars a 10% service fee is added to the bill. More sophisticated places may add on 15%. If service is not included it will be stated at the bottom of the bill: "Serviço não incluído". Cab drivers do not expect a tip, but it is normal to round up the final price. You should be aware that the amount shown on the taximeter may not always correspond to the amount you are due to pay - look out for a separate sheet taped to the window which will tells you how much the amount on the meter equates to.

Getting Around

Air service covers most of Brazil. Note that many flights make many stops en route, particularly in hubs as São Paulo or Brasilia. Brazil has the largest road network in Latin America with over 1.6 million kilometres. A car is a good idea if you want to explore scenic areas, e.g. the historic cities of Minas Gerais, the Rio-Santos highway, or the beaches in North-East Brazil. There are the usual car rental companies at the airports. Long-distance buses are a convenient, economical, and sometimes (usually if you buy the most expensive ticket), rather comfortable way to travel between regions. The bus terminal (rodoviária) in cities play a role akin to train stations in many countries.

Brazil Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Brazil, by far the largest country in  South America , encompasses one of the widest gulfs between raw nature and urbanity anywhere in the world. It's home to both bustling cosmopolitan cities like Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo along the Atlantic coast and to indigenous tribal villages virtually untouched by outsiders in the Amazon Rainforest . There's the frontier city of Manaus along the Amazon and the heavily Afro-Brazilian culture of Bahia along the Atlantic adding further diversity.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

But even more than its places, Brazil is known for its fun-loving people, exemplified by the spirit of their annual Carnival celebrations, marked by samba dancing, skimpy and elaborate costumes and all-night revelries.

A Brief History of Brazil

One of the biggest misconceptions about Brazil is its official language. Unlike its Spanish-speaking neighbors, Brazil’s official language is Portuguese. The first European settlers arrived from Portugal in the 1500’s to harvest the profitable pau-brasil, the red wood, that gave the country its name.

Before European colonization, the territory of Brazil was inhabited by millions of indigenous peoples. Much of the indigenous population died of disease or fled from the coast. The Portuguese monarchy turned to the African slave trade in order to maximize the potential of gold, sugar, and diamond exports.

In 1888, Princess Isabel officially ended slavery. However, the melding of indigenous, European, and African ancestry can still be seen today in the people and culture of Brazil.

The Sights of Rio

Christ the Redeemer Statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Most travelers visiting Brazil start (or eventually make their way to) Rio de Janeiro , known for its iconic landmarks, gorgeous beaches, boisterous Carnaval celebrations, and as the host city of the 2014 World Cup soccer tournament and the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. While in Rio, which fronts the Atlantic Ocean, it’s almost mandatory to spend some time on Copacabana or Ipanema beach.

These beaches are known for their beautiful views, relaxed atmosphere, and the beautiful people that visit the. Other must-sees include the statue of Christ the Redeemer, which occupies the highest point of the city and offers spectacular views of Sugarloaf Mountain and one of the world’s most beautiful harbors. Rio’s nightlife is also some of the best in the world.

Natural Wonders

The Amazon region, the largest tropical rainforest on earth, is centered in Brazil. Manaus, the capital of Amazonia, is the starting point for many of the river cruises on the Amazon River and its tributaries such as the Rio Negro, which flows into the Amazon just outside the city. Manaus is also known for its opulent 19th-century opera house, financed by the wealth of rubber barons and considered the finest outside Europe in its day.

Small-ship cruises usually make multiple stops per day for rainforest hikes, visits to remote villages, and dugout canoe rides through jungle creeks. Listen for howler monkeys in the trees and watch for pink dolphins in the rivers. You might also spot sloths and alligators.

Manaus, State of Amazonas, Brazil.

The Pantanal is an often overlooked but fascinating natural region. Lying south of the Amazon, it’s the world’s largest wetlands area and is a prime spot, many say the best in the Americas, for spotting wildlife such as jaguars, tropical birds, and giant otters. (The Pantanal lacks the thick foliage that often obscures Amazon wildlife viewing).

And in the far southeastern part of the country, on the border with Argentina , stands enormous Iguazu Falls , one of the most powerful cascades on earth. A mile and a half wide, it consists of 275 separate falls, producing often thunderous noises and towering mists.

Weather in Brazil

Brazil’s climate is as diverse as the country is large, with microclimates in the far north and along the eastern coast. However, Brazil’s climate can generally be described in three main categories: equatorial, tropical, and temperate. The Amazon Rainforest in Northern Brazil is crossed by the equator and experiences constant rainfall and thunderstorms.

Temperatures generally remain near 85 degrees in the forest. Moisture is almost always at 100%, creating the perfect habitat for the dense, exotic foliage the Amazon is known for. Although the heat and humidity are year round, the heaviest rainfall occurs from December to May.

Most of central and southern Brazil has a tropical climate, with a rainy season from October to March, and a dry season from May to August. Temperatures generally fall in the mid to high 80’s with little fluctuation. The sea on the northeastern coast hovers in the 80’s, while the southern coast averages between 72-77 degrees, making Brazil’s coast a perfect destination for swimming and beach-going.

Tropical weather on the beach in Brazil.

The farther south you go, the more temperate the climate becomes. Rio de Janeiro and its southern neighbors do experience a colder winter from June to August, with some temperatures falling to the low 70’s, still plenty comfortable for most travelers.

Again, microclimates and exceptions in weather do exist in this diverse country. It is best to research the particular towns, cities, and attractions you want to visit in order to get the most accurate information on weather.

The City of Curitiba

Curitiba, Brazil.

Curitiba lies east of Sao Paulo and is the capital city of the Brazilian state Paraná. While Curitiba is not the most glamorous Brazilian city, it has been recognized as one of the best examples of urban planning. What that means for visitors is clean streets, a pedestrian friendly city center, and a transportation infrastructure that really works.

The city boasts a downtown area closed to vehicles, where pedestrians can walk to shops and restaurants safely. Visitors to the city can hop on one of the many express buses to see the sights, such as the Panorama Tower, which offers a 360° view of Curitiba, or one of the plethora of green spaces. Bus fare is the same no matter how far you’re riding.

This city is a welcome respite from the intensity of other major cities in Brazil, and is well worth a stop if you are traveling to Iguazu Falls from Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paulo.

Top Festivals in Brazil

Reveillon  - On New Year’s Eve, Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro is packed with two million party goers. Festivities run from 7 pm to 4 am and include music, dancing, and fireworks. If you want to party like the locals, wear all white, as this is the official color of the Brazilian New Year.

Celebration of Iemenjá  - This festival pays tribute to the Candomblé goddess of water, Iemenjá, and is particularly popular in the city of Salvador. On February 2, devotees dress in white and send their blessed offerings out to sea. If the offerings do not return, Iemenjá has accepted them.

Festa Junina (June Festival)  - Across the country, Brazilians celebrate the beginning of winter with festivities spanning the entire month. These celebrations also recognize the Catholic saints Saint Anthony, Saint John the Baptist, and Saint Peter. Celebrants also honor the harvest season while enjoying its plentiful food. Specific traditions vary from region to region.

Festival Parintins - Also known as Boi Bumbá, this festival is held in the city of Parintins on the banks of the Amazon. Boi Bumbá is part folk art, part performance, and part storytelling, as two groups compete to see how who can provide the most compelling reenactment of important folklore. Think colorful costumes, big dances, and serious but respectful rivalries.

Nazaré - About two million Catholics parade through the streets of Belém to pay tribute to Our Lady Nazareth in one of the largest religious festivals in the world. The festival takes place in October and is recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. No matter what you believe, witnessing devotees pulling the car that contains Our Lady of Nazareth’s image by a rope, is unforgettable.

Carnival in Rio - The city of Rio makes the list again with their famous Carnival celebration. Even though other cities offer their own festivities, Rio by far is the most popular. Look below for a more in-depth guide to Carnival.

All You Need to Know About Carnival in Brazil

What has become one of the biggest parties in the world actually began as a religious celebration. Carnival is held the week before the Catholic observance of Lent, in late February or early March, and marks the last feast and revelry until Easter. The official celebration begins the Friday afternoon before Ash Wednesday and ends on Ash Wednesday at noon, but for some Brazilians, especially in Rio de Janeiro, the party starts months before.

Carnival has become synonymous with Samba, the music and dance of Brazil that showcases its Latin and African roots. In Rio de Janeiro, Samba schools prepare all year for a chance to compete in a city wide competition, held in the Sambadrome Arena in front of over 70,000 spectators. These schools prepare elaborate costumes and parade floats, sometimes costing millions of dollars, to carry their dancers and musicians to victory.

The winning Samba school brings serious bragging rights to its neighborhood for the rest of the year. Ticket price to the Sambadrome parades range from the affordable to the luxurious. Tickets do sell out, so it is best to book early and always through a reputable party, as counterfeit tickets exist.

Some argue that the real party happens in the hundreds of block parties, or blocos, that happen around Rio from early January to mid February. Streets are shut down as musicians and drink vendors move in, drawing in crowds of hundreds to join in the fun. Some blocos boast hundreds of thousands of attendees.

These street parties are for everyone, not just the hedonistic. Although some blocos are known for an anything goes attitude, others cater to a mellower party-goer. There are blocos for the mature, the young, and the whole family.

Lodging in Rio becomes scarce and prices increase dramatically during the Carnival season, so it is best to book early. Rio de Janeiro has become synonymous with Carnival, but this celebration is not unique to one city. Cities all over Brazil, such as Sao Paulo, Recife, and Salvador, have their own unique Carnival traditions that all center around music, dancing, and the joy of celebration.

Common Tour Routes in Brazil

With Brazil being such a large country, it can be overwhelming trying to decide on your trip route. Most tours will cover specific regions to ensure you’re not spending most of your trip seeing Brazil through the window of your vehicle. Less travel time means you get to experience more.

Many Roads Lead to Rio

The most popular city on tours, by far, is Rio de Janeiro. Located on the eastern coast in the southern part of Brazil, Rio offers a starting point for many Brazil tours. From here, tours head north, to the state of Bahia. Visitors can go to Salvador, once the capital of Brazil, and experience the deep influence of Africa on Brazil's culture. Salvador is known for its music, food, and beaches.

Another popular destination for tours starting in Rio is Iguazu Falls, on the border of Argentina and Paraguay. On their way, tours often stop in Curitiba, a very unique Brazilian City, before continuing through the rainforest, and arriving in Foz do Iguazu.

Wildlife and Adventure Travel in Brazil

Hyacinth macaw in Pantanal, Brazil.

If your dream is to see Brazil’s wildlife in all its glory, then these tour routes are for you. Amazon tours typically begin in the city of Manaus, where guided boats steer you through the river and its abundant vegetation. Some tours cruise leisurely downstream while others offer a bit more adventure.

The other popular wildlife destinations are the Pantanal, the world’s largest wetland, and Bonito, known for its clear waterways and fascinating caves. These two destinations are a 4 hour drive apart, making them a popular pair on tour routes.

If you have the time, resources, and the drive, there are tours that visit every region into one trip! That way, you don’t have to choose between the excitement of Rio and the wonder of the Amazon. You can choose whatever tour route speaks to you.

Food in Brazil

When you’re eating in Brazil, expect a lot of meat! Brazil is known for its barbecue and serves it in generous portions. In churrascarias , or steakhouses, waiters cut meat straight from the skewer onto your plate.

Feijoada, a hearty stew of black beans and different cuts of pork, is another traditional Brazilian meal. Sea food, as in the dish bacalhao , is also popular along the coast. Pão de queijo , a sort of cheesy bread, is made with tapioca flour and curado minas cheese, and is naturally gluten-free.

Steak in Brazil.

Vegetarians and vegans will be hard pressed to find options, as most meals center around meat with rice and beans, and foods often include cheese. However, por kilo restaurants, which are self-service and priced by weight, could provide some choices.

Brazil also has some of the most available and delicious fruit juices, including acaí , which is often blended with ice and topped with more fruit and granola. And anyone can enjoy cachaça , a sugar cane alcohol used in Brazil’s national drink, the caiparinha.

5 Must Try Brazilian Foods:

1. Feijoada   - This traditional Brazilian meal is a hearty stew of black beans and different cuts of pork. It usually takes at least 24 hours to make and is traditionally served on the weekends when families can enjoy it together.

2. Moqueca -  This dish is typical of the northeastern state, Bahia. This fish or shrimp stew utilizes ingredients commonly found in the region, such as coconut milk, coriander, onions, and dendê , or palm oil.

3. Pão de queijo   - Literally translated as “cheese bread,” this dish is just that. It is made with tapioca flour, making it naturally gluten-free, and curado minas cheese, all rolled together and baked until the unique bread rolls are golden brown.

4. Acaí   - Brazil is the birthplace of this now-popular superfood, which is often blended with ice and topped with more fruit and granola.

5. Cachaça   - This isn’t technically a food, but it sure is an important part of Brazilian meals. Cachaça is a sugar cane alcohol used in Brazil’s national drink, the caiparinha. While the lower end stuff can have a strong resemblance to paint thinner, aged cachaça can be quite high end and smooth.

Working with a Brazil Trip Designer

The best way to ensure that you see everything on your Brazil vacation bucket list, working with a trip designer is a must. Trip designers help travelers make travel arrangements and customize their trip. They often make reservations for accommodations and activities.  They do all the hassle and you get to sit back and dream up your perfect trip.

The alternative is joining a pre-planned tour. If you like meeting new people and want to explore Brazil with a group, this is perfect for you. However if you want a personal touch to your visit, then this won't be the right fit. Pre-planned tours are great too, but you only can get so close to your dream vacation. With a Brazil trip designer, you can make your dream trip a reality.

Brazil Vacation Cost and Trip Length

Much like any destination, the cost of a trip to Brazil can vary and depends on many factors. The type of tour whether it be small group or private guided can influence price as well as the duration. If Brazil is just one of many destinations in a vacation package then the price will tend to be higher and a longer duration.

Trips to Brazil tend to range from $2,000 to $6,000.

Some trips do range higher with costs closer to $7,000 or $8,000. These trips tend to include multiple different countries or are designed for luxury travelers with deluxe accommodations.

Browse all $2,000 - $6,000 Brazil vacations   >>

The typical trip length on a Brazil vacation is between 10 and 20 days. However, there are trips that go longer, closer to 5 or 8 days and some range higher, closer to 30 and 50 days. It's best to note that these longer vacations do tend to have higher costs.

Brazil Tours

smiling tourists posing with Christ the redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Life at full speed

Sensuality, dancing, and partying: it seems the Brazilians have made a science of all that is fun in life. The world champions of hedonism were no doubt aided by a lush land and steamy climate, but still there is something different about Brazilians. For one, they are the most diverse country in Latin America, not to mention the continent's only former Portuguese colony. One of the largest countries in the world, Brazil certainly has plenty to see – the Amazon and Iguassu Falls spring immediately to mind – but more than anything it's the Brazilian passion for life, epitomized by Rio's Carnival celebrations, that will make you fall in love and want to return again.

We Focus on Sustainability

Good tourism is responsible and adapts to the country and its conditions. Therefore, we decided to champion sustainability as Brazil travel experts and support the project " Salve Floripa " in our home town of Florianópolis. The project promotes awareness for the local environment and seeks to preserve the Atlantic Rainforest and its biodiversity . We support various projects within this initiative, for example the creation of the first ecological map of Florianópolis. For you as a traveler in Brazil, this social commitment has an added value, as the ecological map also provides you with information about hikes or places for water sports. The preservation of nature in Ilha de Santa Catarina is particularly close to our hearts. Therefore, on World Environment Day on June 5th, we actively support beach maintenance in Barra da Lagoa. If you want to experience the project up close, we have attractive travel packages in and around Florianópolis for you!

Personal Recommendation From Our Team

We have grown particularly fond of the small and rather unknown state of Santa Catarina in the South of Brazil, which we have made our new home. Santa Catarina, with its capital city of Florianópolis, offers beautiful landscapes, fantastic beaches and an unimaginable variety of activities for your vacation. Small romantic fishing villages, secluded bays, white dream beaches, the Atlantic Rainforest and untouched canyons offer the best conditions for varied tours in Brazil. Discover with us the wondrous South of Brazil, hardly known outside of the country until now, and enchant your senses with its beauty and warm people!

Such rich national diversity is represented in its Carnival, with bright costumes, samba rhythms, and a party atmosphere demonstrating how beautiful it is when we come together as one people, regardless of ethnic or tribal affiliations. This tour will take you on a journey to explore Salvador’s ancient sites and landmarks in an unparalleled way as you delve deeper into this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Salvador is one of the oldest colonial cities in the Americas, which has a captivating and mysterious charm. Your tour includes so many activities spanning from its authentic cuisine to its charming squares, colorful buildings and a lot more.

One of the first destinations to visit for your adventure is the breathtaking beach called Pontal de Maracaipe. This magical beach, with its turquoise waters and soft sand, will charm you to take a quick swim as you attempt to dip your toe in the water. The waves crashing against the shore will sound like music to your ears, and you will feel the cool breeze on your face as you take in the stunning views.

After an awesome and well-deserved beach day, you’ll go to Praia Barra Grande, another must-see beach. Your experience at this beach will be unlike any other because the beaches themselves are vastly distinct, yet there are some commonalities.

Walking along the sand, you will notice how the sand splits this magnificent body of water in half, creating a one-of-a-kind and unforgettable view. The captivating beauty of the beach will leave you speechless, and you’ll want to spend hours walking barefoot on the sandy beach.

The scenic beach at Pontal do Maragogi is last but not least on the list of wonderful beaches to visit. Your experience here will be unlike any other beach since you will take a boat journey to the sea to see the natural pools beneath the surface. And the vibrant marine life beneath the turquoise sea will entice you to don the snorkeling equipment offered and dive deep into the underwater world.

The tour includes adventures to the Lencois Maranhenses National Park, Morro de Sao Paulo, Recife, Olinda, Fortaleza, and five additional places. It will be an ‘experience overload’.

This vacation takes a group of 8 people ranging in age from 1 to 99 years old and costs $3,260 per person for 11 days of food, accommodation, and transportation. It is also family-friendly and fully guided.

With such a small group of passengers, they will be able to focus on each individual’s requirements, treating each one holistically.

With over 15 years of experience, Signature Tours is one of the most experienced in the travel market in the management of individuals or small groups, focused on serving the needs of the most demanding clientele from all over the world.

You can trust their creativity in crafting tailor-made tours that will give you the best experiences you will ever need to build strong travel memories that you will remember forever. Their professional local guides are knowledgeable and very friendly, making it easy to approach them should you have any concerns.

The previous tour was jam-packed with visits to the best beaches of Brazil; on this tour, however, you will be taken on a journey through nature, experiencing the world’s largest wetland area – the Pantanal, in a way that few ever get to. From early morning to late evening, you will participate in various activities that will place you in real contact with nature, making the most of every moment of this adventure. No low energies whatsoever.

The first activity on your itinerary is a jeep photo safari on the Transpantaneira. As you drive through this huge natural wonder, you’ll come across a diverse range of wildlife, from giant otters to caimans and jaguars. So watch out!

The stunning landscapes and breathtaking views will leave you contemplating just how powerful nature can be, and the best part, you’ll find yourself snapping away with your camera, capturing every moment of this incredible journey. Perfect shots for IG posts.

One of the most serene moments of the tour is the canoe sailing down the river at sunset, surrounded by complete green vegetation, with the gentle roar of the water as you paddle being the only thing you hear. As you glide through the waters, you’ll feel a deep sense of peace and tranquillity that is very hard to find in the city.

If you have been to Pantanal by any chance, you will realize that riding horses is the region’s typical transportation, and guess what? You’ll get to experience it firsthand. As you ride through, you’ll be treated to some of the most spectacular sunsets you’ll ever see.

If we could add some more weight to that statement, we would. The colors of the sky blend with the stunning vegetation and the sunset lights reflecting on the water’s surface in a spectacular display; you will be left amazed and wondering at the beauty of nature.

This vacation takes a group of 10 people ranging in age from 1 to 99 years old and costs $1700 per person for 4 days of food, accommodation, and transportation. It is also family-friendly and fully guided.

Intrepid Travel

Intrepid Travel was created in 1989 by two Melbourne, Australia, men who embarked on an unconventional tourist route to Africa in their modified truck, which they filled with a variety of culinary products ranging from beers to loaves of bread.

As they discovered a new way of traveling that is very different from the traditional way of traveling, they decided to start something similar to help other travelers take on trips like theirs and unlock the secrets to genuine experiences – and thus Intrepid Travel was born.

Now giving more than 100,000 guests per year the opportunity to enjoy small group travel in the best way possible to destinations all over the world, Intrepid has done an epic job in growing its company to what it is today. They are community-first travelers who value their impact on these vulnerable communities that give so much to their guests. This is why Intrepid hires local services when the need arises, from accommodation to local guides.

Didn’t you notice that Brazil’s activities are as diverse and vivid as the country’s cultural mix? Well, we have realized that when one tour takes you to the beautiful beaches and another to the wondrous natural wetlands, you can look forward to another term taking you on an unforgettable journey through two of Rio de Janeiro’s most epic landmarks.

Tout d’abord, you will say hello to Christ the Redeemer – the iconic statue, standing tall and proud on Corcovado Mountain, beckoning you to come closer and bask in its glory. As you ascend to the mountain’s peak, you will witness the sweeping views of Rio’s stunning landscape meters below you.

Note: If you are afraid of heights, we will advise you not to ascend more than you can support, but if you are that big climber like some of us, then we will notify you to take a moment to catch your breath and allow the majesty of this place to sink in.

Now is the time to look up, way up, and gaze upon Christ the Redeemer’s face as you stand at the base of the statue, admiring its epic art and grandeur, from the robe’s folds to the serene expression on the face. What a tranquillity!

This vacation takes a group of 16 people ranging in age from 15 to 99 years old and costs $3185 per person for 6 days of food, accommodation, and transportation. It is also family-friendly and fully guided.

Chapada Diamantina Experienc e

Nattrip was created in 2010 when access to ecotourism and adventure tourism was limited or non-existent, particularly in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This prompted the establishment of a company focused on ecotourism in the eco-adventure category, which helps to promote a more responsible manner of seeing our tourist locations.

Since their inception, they have been lauded for their outstanding performance in promoting tourism in Brazil, and they have vowed never to relent or waiver. You can rely on local firms to take you to the best sites in Brazil because they know their nation better than anyone else.

Nattrip is well known as an adventure operator in Brazil for a reason; they have demonstrated all of their power in the corporate, educational, and travel markets to make travel easier and smoother for you when you visit Brazil.

If you think you know Bahia just because you’ve been to Salvador and the beaches, then it’s time to think again. Yep! Think again. The central region of this massive Brazilian state holds treasures that go far beyond whatever you have experienced, from its oldest churches to its largest collections of sacred art that you might not find anywhere else in Salvador. Umhu, you get that right. So you will be among the lucky few to experience Bahia to its core on this tour.

Feeling energetic? Let’s dive deeper into what is next on this impressive tour. Ahha! Chapada Diamantina – a gem of a National Conservation Unit encompassing the Chapada Diamantina National Park. This place boasts a unique biome and natural wonders and has a rich history you will learn about while visiting. Indigenous peoples, blacks, and their descendants all left their mark on this land, making it a melting pot of cultures.

Now, get ready to visit the main natural attractions of the Park, full of outstanding sights and breathtaking waterfalls – close your eyes for a moment and imagine the scenic views of this wonderful place. Places like Morro do Pai Inácio, Lagoa Encantada, and Cachoeira da Fumaça are next on the travel itinerary, but we do not have the space to put them all in ink, so we will leave them for your magical exploration.

This vacation takes 10 people aged 12 to 99 years old and costs $850 per person for 6 days of food, accommodation, and transportation. It is also family-friendly and fully guided.

Discover all the wonders of an awe – inspiring land

While on the Grand tour of Brazil, you will encounter several regions, each with a multitude of landscapes and terrains.

One of the main interests of this full circuit, are the swamps in  Pantanal, the richest ecosystem in the world . Moreover, the vast beaches of the semi-arid Nordeste  also reveal some of the world´s most  captivating ecosystems,  and are a paradise for lovers of tranquility.

We have designed this trip to be an exceptional experience . We want you to feel the adrenaline when you encounter a jaguar for the first time in the heart of Mato Grosso and enjoy the calm and silence in the desert dunes of Lençóis , to see the simple beauty of a sunset over Rio de Janeiro and experience the amazing complexity of the Baroque art in Minas Gerais.  Explore the widely unexplored  Amazon rainforest and share the exuberance and laughter of the people of Salvador de Bahia which reminds one of the tumultuous song of the Iguaçu Falls .

In other words, this trip will wake your sensations and emotions through the privileged moments that you will experience. Discover the real Brazil, on the Brazil Selection Grand Tour of Brazil.

A journey to the soul of Brazil

On this spectacular journey, you will discover the exuberant nature of the local people, but not only that.

Brazil is known as the land of a thousand contrasts and has the reputation of having the greatest cultural diversity in the world.

Thus, each region has its customs and costumes, its music and its cuisine, moreover its very specific vocabulary, most often linked to the particular environment in which it develops.

In Iguaçu, there is astonishing ethnic diversity. From the Indian descendant to the Lebanese, and from Japanese to Portuguese all living in harmony and creating rich and permanent cultural exchanges across origins and religions. In Pantanal, the gauchos, or cowboys of south and central Brazil, who live with their cattle herds in the grassy plains have created a whole culture of their own.

In Amazonia, you will feel the indigenous influence through the way the locals live. Whether in their cooking, architecture, or religious thought … the Amerindian heritage is present everywhere.

In the Northeast, along the vast beaches between São Luís and Fortaleza, you will encounter people descendent from European settlers and the indigenous populations of the coast. Here, there is a well developed fishing culture as well as the famous Sertanejo tradition, which is based on the hard life on the arid and torrid lands of the region. In Salvador de Bahia, you will discover the essence of Afro-Brazilian culture, one of the strongest in Brazil, and at the origin of fascinating syncretic religions, such as Candomblé and Umbanda.

In Minas Gerais, all the baroque and colonial heritage of Brazil will unfold before your eyes, not forgetting the famous warm hospitality of the “Mineiros.”

Finally in Rio de Janeiro, you will find the Brazil that we all love in the Samba and the sweet Bossa Nova played in the bars of Lapa. You should also experience the fervor of the carnival and its “ensaios” – the rehearsals for the final show.

With the Grand Tour of Brazil, you will leave with one simple wish, to come back and enjoy the beauty and the joy of one of the most wonderful countries in the world!

Built in 1754, it stands on a hill overlooking the town and its rugged terrain. In the Sala dos Milagres you will find the ex-votos, which are offered by the faithful to give thanks for a grace or healing obtained. They are also found in the form of notes describing the promises made by the faithful. In the church square there are people selling coloured ribbons. These “fitas” are attached around the wrist by three knots, each corresponding to a vow that will be heard once the bracelet has worn out and fallen off.

The visit continues with the Monte Serrat fort located on a jetty off the Itapagipe penninsula, which offers a breathtaking view of the bay and the island of Itaparica. Built in 1583, this fort protected Salvador from the Dutch attacks of the 17th century. Its harmonious forms make it a jewel of Brazilian military architecture.

A journey through time: the historic towns in the Minas Gerais region possess a unique artistic and architectural heritage. The churches, museums, streets and houses beautifully preserved or restored testify to a magnificent Brazilian cultural and traditional past.

When looking at an Aleijadinho sculpture you would be forgiven for mistaking your location for Portugal or Flanders. It’s both the pinnacle and the summary of baroque art in Brazil.

Minas Gerais is also a state with a difference, forged by its wealth during the gold rush, (and other minerals), thieves or “bandeirantes” ran wild here, and there are many tales of their adventures. This pousada offers a trip into the historical atmosphere of the baroque centre of Ouro Preto. In this old 19th century hotel with colonial style rooms it feels like a trip back in time but with all modern furnishings.

There is a good restaurant and both indoor and outdoor pools making this pousada an exceptional place to stay in.

Hotel Brisa da Serra (Standard and Superior)

Brisa da Serra is located in a beautiful and calm garden facing the green hills. It has large rooms decorated in old stone and contemporary styles. Some rooms have a real and working fireplace for a romantic evening in front of the fire in the cooler season. Exceptional facilities almost at a luxury level make this an excellent way to end your “Mineiro tour.”

Rio de Janeiro

Hotel olinda (standard).

This hotel doesn’t have a pool but it is still one of the best options for a reasonable stay in Rio. The rooms with a sea view over Copacabana are pleasantly decorated in a 1950s style and are very charming.

Altos de Santa Teresa (Standard)

An address that we are glad to recommend to our clients, located in the Santa Teresa district 20 minutes from Copacabana by taxi. If you are looking for a small, quality pousada in a quiet area of the city, then Altos de Santa Teresa pousada is your best option. In a completely refurbished and modernized house, the owners have created a haven of peace with beautiful rooms and common areas decorated with care in a resolutely contemporary design. The superb terrace offers a swimming pool and jacuzzi with a magnificent panoramic view. Great benefits for the best value for money we offer in Rio de Janeiro. A romantic place ideal for couples but also for those looking for a small establishment far from the hustle and bustle of the city.  Absolutely a top pick!

Hotel Miramar  (Superior)

This hotel could be in the luxury category as it is located on the Copacabana beach. It is the best value for money in its range. It offers an excellent breakfast rightfully known as the best in Rio. Our superior pick for Rio de Janeiro.

On the Brazilian Coast, a Tropical Town Beloved by Artists and Makers

A guide to Paraty, on the Costa Verde, with tips on where to stay, shop and island hop from the artist Vik Muniz and four other insiders.

Roughly halfway between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, the coastal town of Paraty (population 45,000) isn’t the easiest place to reach. It requires a four-hour, mostly mountainous drive from either city, a 45-minute helicopter charter or arrival by sea. It’s that relative seclusion that keeps the tourist hordes and unbridled development at bay, despite the town’s obvious appeal. Set on Brazil’s Costa Verde, with mountains covered in rainforest on one side and the emerald green waters of Ilha Grande Bay on the other, Paraty (pronounced para-CHEE by locals), preserves more than 30 blocks as its historic quarter, a grid of pedestrian-only cobblestone streets lined with whitewashed 18th- and 19th-century facades, many of them remnants of the Portuguese colonial era.

Starting in the mid-1600s, the town grew prosperous as a seaport during the country’s gold rush (many of the biggest gold mines were in the neighboring inland state Minas Gerais) — and as a hub for the slave trade. African slaves not only worked in the mines but built much of the town’s early infrastructure, such as its roads. Once the gold stopped coming through Paraty for export in the early 1700s, the town continued to harvest sugar cane and produce cachaça, the national spirit, before shifting its economic focus to the coffee trade. At the end of the 19th century, Santos, 190 miles to the south, supplanted Paraty as the country’s primary coffee-exporting port, and the town began to languish. “It fell off the map,” says Luana Assunção, the owner of the Rio-based travel company Free Walker Tours. “It became isolated and poor. Many houses were abandoned.”

By the 1970s, a new highway and an influx of urban transplants had given Paraty an infusion of new life. Lured by the area’s affordability, a number of artists, designers and other creative types began renovating the old mansions and opening a handful of galleries, boutiques, cafes and small hotels, turning the long-forgotten town into an alluring vacation destination.

“I was worried that mass tourism would endanger the future of the culture and the nature in Paraty, but it didn’t happen,” says the nature photographer Dom João de Orleans e Bragança, who has been visiting Paraty since 1968 and now lives there most of the year. He credits the strict building codes for imbuing the town with a certain timeless quality, even after the pandemic when the area’s second-home owners began spending more time in Paraty. “You’ll never see a skyscraper, and we don’t have big resorts or hotels here.”

What Paraty does have is easy access to the dozens of small islands and sandy coves across the bay (local traineiras , renovated wooden fishing boats; large schooners; and speedboats are all available for visitors to rent for daylong outings), and the countless hiking trails, waterfalls and beaches that are part of the massive Serra da Bocaina National Park. Visitors can also make day trips to a handful of villages home to Indigenous and historic Black settlements that have maintained a strong cultural identity. “There’s layer upon layer here,” said Lena Santana, a Brazilian costume and fashion designer who has been living in Paraty for the last decade. “It creates a certain kind of depth that makes people want to stay.” Here, Santana and four other locals and longtime Paraty visitors share their recommendations for where to stay, eat and explore.

The Insiders

Silvia Furmanovich , a fine-jewelry designer based between São Paulo and New York City, has been traveling to Paraty every other year for the past three decades.

The artist and photographer Vik Muniz , who lives in Rio de Janeiro and New York City, has been visiting Paraty since 1999.

Diana Radomysler is a partner and director of the interiors and design department at the São Paulo-based architecture firm Studio MK27. She travels to Paraty annually with her family.

Lena Santana , who was born in Salvador, Brazil, and moved to Paraty a decade ago after 15 years in London, owns a boutique, Atelier Napele, in the historic center, and Bus Stop Paraty, a guesthouse, 12 miles outside of town in Playa Grande.

Gisela Schmitt , originally from São Paulo, is the chef and owner of Paraty’s Gastromar restaurant and a boat-catering company.

Illustrations by Richard Pedaline

“I love to stay at Casa Turquesa , built on the ruins of an 18th-century mansion in the old town. Everything in the Turquoise Suite is white and turquoise, from the fabrics to the artwork. One room has prints from the British botanical artist Margaret Mee, who spent decades traveling to the Amazon documenting flora, which have inspired my work in the past.” (Rooms from about $520 a night.) — Silvia Furmanovich

“I always suggest that friends stay at the Pousada Literária de Paraty, a cozy hotel within a cluster of historic mansions that surround a tropical garden — they return enchanted by both the hotel and its restaurant.” (Rooms from about $350 a night.) — Diana Radomysler

“The Brazilian travel company Matueté has a selection of villas. You can rent the interior designer Linda Pinto’s house in the historic quarter close to the waterfront. It has a beautiful courtyard, so the house is flooded with natural light.” (Rentals from about $1,500 a night, with a three-night minimum.) — Gisela Schmitt

Eat and Drink

“At Banana da Terra , the chef Ana Bueno cooks contemporary Caiçara [the main Indigenous community of the area] cuisine in a charming restaurant in the historic quarter. She offers things like mango and shrimp salad and a hamburger made with crab meat. After dinner, go to Gelateria Miracolo for ice cream and try the flavor made with cupuaçu, an Amazonian fruit that’s closely related to cacao.” — S.F.

“Head to Graúna [about 12 miles north of Paraty], a beautiful valley in the Atlantic Forest, for lunch at Le Gite d’Indaiatiba . The chef is like a wizard of the forest. She makes her ravioli with taioba, an edible plant from the jungle [similar to collard greens]. Call ahead and ask them to prepare the sauna, which is next to a swimmable waterfall on the property.” — G.S.

“ Fugu Japanese Food is a new restaurant that serves fish that’s been caught fresh the same day, like sororoca [a white local fish] and prejereba [tripletail]. Don’t miss the tuna starter with locally grown shiitake mushrooms or the teishoku, a wooden box with 12 different small portions of menu items, including the day’s fresh catch. There’s also a great sake selection. For dessert, have the wasabi ice cream.” — D.R.

“Recently, one of my favorite designers from São Paulo, Flavia Aranha , opened a store in Paraty. Her pieces are timeless, produced in organic fabrics or natural fibers dyed with Brazilian plants and herbs.” — D.R.

“For handwoven baskets, go to Cestarias Regio Paraty in the historic center. They come in all sizes and are made by local communities. I love the ones made from covo, a fiber extracted from bamboo, that are used to go fishing.” — G.S.

“Visit the village of Cunha in the Paraíba Valley, where the Japanese couple Mieko and Toshiyuki Ukeseki started firing ceramics in a noborigama [a traditional Japanese wood-fired chamber kiln] in the 1970s. A small community of ceramists joined them, and you can buy their pieces at their ateliers or at the ceramics festivals that Cunha hosts throughout the year.” — L.S.

“To pick up authentic Indigenous arts and crafts, such as vases and musical instruments, go to Canoa Arte Indígena . I bought several baskets from there that now decorate my office in São Paulo.” — S.F.

“Paraty has some of the best cachaça in Brazil. My favorite brand is Cachaça Maria Izabel . [Maria Izabel] and her daughters own a sugar cane plantation in Sítio Santo Antônio, about six miles north of Paraty, where they still produce the spirit by hand. You can do a tasting at the distillery and buy bottles there, or at shops in town.” — V.M.

“The Livraria das Marés is a big-city bookstore in a small town. It’s a contemporary space designed by the architect Bel Lobo with black metal shelves and a wood-paneled floor and ceiling. There’s a delightful cafe at the back.” — D.R.

“Don’t miss Saco do Mamanguá, which is the world’s only tropical fjord. You can only get there by boat, and you’ll pass Caiçara villages along small beaches. From there, you can hike to the peak of Mamanguá’s Pão de Açúcar for dramatic views of the entire Ilha Grande Bay. Another option is to rent kayaks at one of the beaches and paddle deep into the mangroves at the very end of the fjord.” — G.S.

“ Fazenda Bananal is a great place to take children. It’s a nature preserve in the forest with a farmhouse. There are walking trails, farm animals and a restaurant called Ninho that’s absolutely incredible. Many of the ingredients come from the farm. I had the best slow-cooked pork of my life there.” — V.M.

“Visit Quilombo do Campinho [a settlement about 10 miles south of Paraty founded at the end of the 19th century by formerly enslaved people]. There’s a restaurant that serves fresh grilled fish and a shop with beautiful wooden animal sculptures, rugs made of straw, bamboo furniture and jewelry made from local tropical seeds. On the way home, stop at the village of Paraty-Mirim, where you can buy artisanal wares from the Guaraní tribe; then swim at its gorgeous beach, which is bordered by mountains and a river.” — L.S.

“One of the best ways to enjoy Paraty by sea is to book Gisela Schmitt’s Sem Pressa boat tour, which takes you to the surrounding coves and swimming spots (my favorite is Saco da Velha) while offering delicious local plates like cachaça- and beet-cured prejereba [tripletail fish], fresh oysters and mussels.” — V.M.

Practical Matters

“It’s fun to be in Paraty during one of its festivals. There’s FLIP [Festa Literária Internacional de Paraty], a large and influential literary festival [this year it will be held in October] and loads of other events throughout the town.” — L.S.

“The best time to visit is from May to August, when there’s less rain, the sky is beautiful and the sea is wonderful.” — G.S.

These interviews have been edited and condensed.

A picture caption with an earlier version of this article misstated the types of crafts that are sold at Canoa Arte Indígena; they include baskets, ceramics and beaded jewelry, not feather headdresses.

An earlier version of this article referred incorrectly to the fish served at Fugu Japanese Food. Most of the fish on the menu are caught fresh that same day, but not all of them.

No more bus tours for China's rich millennials — they're seeing the world on their own

  • Rich Chinese millennials are opting for solo travel, the latest status symbol.
  • It counters the organized group-tour travel of their parent's generation.
  • They're looking for more immersive, meaningful travel experiences that let them escape hustle culture.

Insider Today

Rich millennials in China are experiencing world travel in a very different way from their parents.

The older generation was the first group to benefit from the country opening up to world tourism, but the industry was still in its infancy. Therefore, organized tour groups were the go-to option for those with the money to spend on this new middle-class pursuit.

These tours offered a safer and more accessible way to explore new destinations, Elisa Harca, CEO of consultancy firm Red Ant Asia, previously told Business Insider.

But younger generations — millennials and Gen Z — have grown up in a world that's much more open to them. For those who can afford the luxury, they spent their youth traveling with their parents and studying abroad.

And it's meant that now they want to travel alone or in smaller groups of friends, as it emerges as the latest luxury status symbol for younger people in China .

New technology has made solo travel much less daunting

"They're a lot more used to being tourists,'' Jack Porteous of China-focused consultancy firm Tong Global told Business Insider.

Many people have a more advanced level of English, and the availability of real-time translation apps means traveling further afield to places in Europe is much less daunting for this younger cohort.

The rise of social media platforms for travel has also spurred the accessibility of solo travel. Experts pointed to the Xiaohongshu , China's Instagram-like app, as one of the main resources for travel recommendations.

Luxury travelers, especially those in their 20s and 30s, are relying on Xiaohongshu to make decisions on booking hotels, flights, and restaurants when they travel, Sally Maier-Yip, founder of China-focused communications consultancy 11K Consulting, told BI.

In 2022, the app boasted an estimated 200 million monthly users, mainly young women, seeking product recommendations, lifestyle advice, and how-to videos .

Related stories

Porteous explained that the site is full of content about how to "live like a local" in different destinations worldwide.

This allows people to find more authentic travel recommendations for themselves rather than leaning on travel experts.

Traveling for deep personal fulfillment

It's not just about ticking off bucket-list destinations; well-traveled younger people are looking for deeper meaning in the experiences they're spending their money on.

"Immersive travel experiences spanning four to eight days are gaining traction," Maier-Yip, told BI. She said this indicates a growing appetite for trips centered on fulfillment and personal happiness.

"Travel has also taken on a new role as a form of self-exploration and definition," Porteous of Tong Global added.

Visiting unique, off-the-beaten-track locations is the next frontier for those looking for luxurious travel experiences.

Porteous points to the rise of glamping in China and holidays focussed on outdoor activities, such as horse riding in Inner Mongolia, as examples of these new immersive experiences.

China's grueling work culture means younger people are looking for a break

There's a growing trend of young people taking early-career gaps , loudly celebrating quitting their jobs to go traveling, he added.

Chinese employers are known for their notorious "996" work culture, which demands workers clock in from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. six days a week.

But younger generations are becoming more inclined to reject this.

Viral acts of rebellion such as wearing " gross clothes " to the office, or just giving up and " lying flat " have all been ways that they've been going against the status quo.

Taking time off work to travel solo is one example of how younger Chinese people have a different view of their life trajectory versus their parent's generation.

Donald Trump Is Banned from 37 Countries as Convicted Felon, Including Major Allies Like Canada and U.K.

If elected president again, Trump would need special permission to enter several key countries for maintaining foreign relations

Donald Trump may face travel restrictions with his newfound felon status , potentially complicating his presidency if he were to win another term in office.

Thirty-eight nations, counting the United States, bar felons from entry, according to World Population Review . Those bans stand regardless of whether someone is allowed to retain their passport after conviction.

Countries that turn felons away include several of the United States' strongest allies, like the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada — the final of which will host the G7 summit of world leaders in 2025. The list also includes a number of nations at the center of pressing foreign policy issues, such as China, Israel and Mexico.

AP Photo/Alex Brandon

International governments can, and in some cases would, choose to make an exception for Trump if he requested special permission as president to make a visit.

George W. Bush , who was arrested for drunk driving in the 1970s, ran into issues with Canadian travel restrictions during his presidency while planning an official state visit and, after applying for a special waiver, he was ultimately allowed to enter.

Win McNamee/Getty

In Bush's case, which still proved tedious, the circumstances were a bit different: the crime happened decades earlier, was only categorized as a misdemeanor and was never tried in a court of law (Bush admitted to driving under the influence upon arrest and got off with a fine and temporary license suspension). It's hard to say whether Trump's new 34 felony convictions would be dealt with in a similar manner.

Countries That Deny Entry to Felons

  • Dominican Republic
  • New Zealand
  • Philippines
  • South Africa
  • South Korea
  • United Arab Emirates
  • United Kingdom
  • United States

If Trump were elected to another term in the White House and chose to apply for special travel waivers, the irony would not go unnoticed.

The former president has often characterized foreigners as "criminals," and has campaigned on a promise to tighten U.S. travel restrictions, which would include shutting down the border and instating travel bans on people of certain nationalities and ideologies.

German tour operator FTI is filing for insolvency and canceling future trips

  • Copy Link copied

BERLIN (AP) — German tour operator FTI said Monday that it is filing for insolvency protection from creditors, and trips that haven’t yet started will be canceled or scaled back.

FTI Group, which describes itself as Europe’s third-biggest tour operator, said parent company FTI Touristik GmbH, was filing an application for the opening of insolvency proceedings at a Munich court.

Since an announcement in April that a consortium of investors would come on board, “booking figures have fallen well short of expectations despite the positive news,” the company said in a statement.

“In addition, numerous suppliers have insisted on advance payment,” it added. “As a result, there was an increased need for liquidity, which could no longer be bridged until the closing of the investor process,” making the insolvency filing a legal necessity.

The operator said it is working to ensure that trips that have already started can be completed as planned, but “trips that have not yet begun will probably no longer be possible or only partially possible from Tuesday.”

A support website and hotline were set up for customers affected.

The Munich-based FTI Group has over 11,000 employees.

The country is loaded with incredible natural attractions – the Amazon, roaring Iguazu Falls and jungle-clad mountains where you feel on top of the world (much like Christ the Redeemer). And let’s not forget Brazil’s infectious music – from samba and bossa nova to Afro-Brazilian beats – and a party to be had around every corner. And of course the pumping beaches, where you can play football until the sun dips low behind Corcovado.   Brazil   is your cue to pick up a caipirinha and join the fun.

Best time to visit brazil.

In most parts of Brazil, temperatures range from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius, regardless of the season. The summer months between December and February can be hot and humid, bringing temperatures to the high 30s – perfect weather to enjoy Brazil’s famous beaches. It’s also festival season, so it’s well worth visiting during this time.

Rainfall varies greatly around Brazil so depending on where you’re travelling, you could experience some rain. Around the Pantanal, Manaus and the Amazon basin, expect patches of rain all year round. Rio and the areas around Foz de Iguacu don’t have distinct rainy seasons and are typically drier than some other areas of Brazil.

The south of Brazil experiences extreme seasonal changes, so pack accordingly.

Culture and customs

Brazilians are universally known for their infectious enthusiasm and lust for life. The wild celebratory atmosphere of Carnaval isn’t a one-off —impromptu street parties, heaving nightclubs and busy dance halls all display the same vibrant energy and passion all year round. Travellers will find that music, dance and good times are all passionately pursued by most Brazilians, regardless of income, gender or age. But it doesn’t stop there. Fun is not limited to the dynamic bars and clubs of the big cities - the natural world is also enjoyed by most Brazilians. With so many spectacular beaches, national parks, mountains and forests, there are plenty of places for Brazilians to enjoy their favourite past times – football, surfing, swimming, hiking, volleyball and capoeira (a Brazilian blend of martial arts and dance). Brazilians are also known for being one of the most open, friendly and affectionate nationalities – personal space isn’t regarded as highly in Brazil as in most other countries, so expect to be hugged and kissed by new and old friends when travelling here.

In contrast to the exuberant, modern life that Brazil's city dwellers live, are the humble, traditional ways of the indigenous tribes that live in the Amazon and surrounds. Despite modern advances, many still live off the land – hunting for wild animals and gathering fruit and berries - although sadly this is rapidly changing due to deforestation and urbanisation. In the face of this, many tribes still cling to their ancient culture through traditional clothing, dance and song.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Brazil’s major cities feature a wide range of international cuisine, so it’s possible to eat a western-style breakfast, Mexican for lunch and Italian for dinner, with a few traditional Brazilian snacks in between. For an in-depth look at what you can eat in Brazil, visit our   South American food guide .

Things to try in Brazil

1. Churrasco

This traditional Brazilian barbecue is a true pleasure for meat eaters. Beef, pork, chicken, duck, lamb and fish are all skewered and cooked to perfection over hot coals, creating a smoky flavour and tender texture.

Brazil’s coastline is home to a bounty of marine life so when on the coast, be sure to eat seafood while it’s at its freshest. Fried baby octopus, king prawns and fragrant, seafood stew are great options.

3. Feijoada

This stew of beans and beef is Brazil’s national dish, and reflects its rich immigrant history. The flavours and style are a mix of African, Indian and Portuguese food traditions, making it a direct culinary link to Brazil’s past.

4. Caipirinha

This refreshing cocktail made from cachaca (a spirit derived from sugar cane), sugar, crushed ice and lime is the Brazilian national drink, and the perfect accompaniment to a beachside sunset.

Brazil has plenty of tropical fruits and berries – so for a quick snack, head to the markets and buy fresh bananas, limes, oranges, guava, jackfruit and acai berries.

Geography and environment

Being the fifth largest country in the world, Brazil shares land borders with many other countries including   Venezuela , Guyana,   Colombia ,   Peru ,   Bolivia , Paraguay,   Argentina , Uruguay, Suriname and French Guiana. Home to many different landscapes and ecosystems, Brazil’s natural environment is one of the most famous in the world. From the steamy tropical rainforest that surrounds the Amazon River and the swirling torrents of white water at Iguazu Falls, to the stunning beaches, reefs and islands of the coast, Brazil is certainly blessed with the very best of Mother Nature. Home to many of the world's most rare and endangered species, travellers will be able to see the full spectrum of colourful bird life, curious mammals, gigantic snakes and unique marine life.

With such a large population, Brazil’s major cities are busy, crowded and chaotic. It can take some getting used to, but once you’re working with the flow of the Brazilian way of life, you’ll begin to enjoy the pace. With a widening gap between the rich and the poor, housing can vary from large mansions in upscale neighbourhoods and modern apartments right in the heart of the city, to humble tin sheds in the sprawling favelas. In some ways, Brazil’s major cities are full of contrasts but the universal appeal of partying, dancing and drinking seems to cross all cultural and social barriers.

History and government

Early history.

Indigenous tribes inhabited Brazil for centuries before the arrival of the first European settlers from Portugal in the 1500s. Colonisation brought agriculture and crop growing to Brazil, resulting in extensive land clearing which dispossessed much of the indigenous population. The growing of sugar cane resulted in an influx of new residents, mainly slaves who brought rich African traditions with them. Remnants of this can still be seen in much of today’s music, dance and food. By the 19th century, coffee had taken the place of sugar as Brazil’s most valuable crop. The increase in coffee production brought a new wave of migrants to Brazil, mainly from Europe, and Brazil’s economy continued to flourish until the military coup of 1889.

Recent history

Brazil’s more recently history has also been characterised by wide spread immigration – especially during and after World War II - with large numbers of Jewish people choosing to flee persecution to live in Brazil, as well as significant numbers of people from the Middle East and other European countries.

In 1989, Brazil held its first democratic election in almost 30 years after decades of military rule. More recently, a stable government has resulted in increased economic prosperity, although many of Brazil’s residents are still impoverished, living well below the poverty line.

Top 10 beach spots of Brazil

1. praia do rosa.

The big surf and relaxed vibe of this hip holiday haven in Southern Brazil makes it a firm favourite with visitors and locals alike. Praia do Rosa manages to balance development with tradition - elegant small-scale hotels and eco-lodges provide the perfect place to rest after hiking, whale watching or surfing.

The cosmopolitan charms of this world-famous beach make it popular with people from all walks of life. Expect to see enthusiastic travellers, smug millionaires, bohemian artists and indifferent locals all enjoying Ipanema’s magnetic magic.

3. Jericoacoara

Far away from the showy extravagance of Rio lies this secluded spot only accessible by 4x4. Strictly protected from overdevelopment, the slow pace suits the windsurfers and kite surfers who prefer to get their thrills from the ocean's wild tides.

4. Lopes Mendes

This beach, located on the island of Ilha Grande, is considered one of Brazil’s best. The killer combination of fine white sand, great waves and clear, blue water guarantee perfect conditions for swimming, surfing and sun-worshipping.

5. Canoa Quebrada

This mellow hippie haven boasts stunning sand dunes and a deep blue-green sea. Horse riding on the dunes at sunset or cruising the coast on an old fishing boat are great ways to make the most of this picture perfect piece of Brazil.

Put on the world map by Bridget Bardot back in the 1960s, Buzios is the epitome of Brazilian sophistication. The designer boutiques, glam hotels and cool bars attract the celebrity jet set – but it’s the beautiful bays and beaches that are the true superstars of Buzios.

7. Copacabana

One of the world’s most famous urban beaches, Copacabana, is a top spot to indulge in a bit of people watching. Watch an eclectic mix of people play football, work on their tans and strut their stuff on this busy meeting spot that attracts all walks of life.

8. Praia da Mole

Soft white sand for lazing in the sun and a year-round supply of waves for surfing make this beach in Florianopolis a top pick. Paragliding, wakeboarding and other water sports provide more thrills, while the nearby bars and clubs ensure good times when the sun goes down.

9. Maragogi

Found on the Coral Coast of Brazil, Maragogi’s calm waters offer some respite from the big breaks found on many other Brazilian beaches. Colourful offshore reefs make snorkelling or scuba diving a must for visitors looking for aquatic adventures.

10. Tambaba

One for the free spirits of the world, Brazil’s only official nudist beach is flanked by steep, dramatic cliffs and dotted with swaying coconut palms. Choose to get cheeky and take advantage of lying on Brazil’s only sanctioned nudist beach in all your glory, or keep your kit on and stick to the “non-naturist” side.

Brazil’s two largest cities – Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo – offer a wide range of shopping opportunities, from high-end designer shops to independent boutiques and everything in between. Every mid-sized city will have at least one ‘shopping’ (what Brazilians call their shopping malls), but as you move to more rural and remote areas, your best bet is the local market.

Shopping tips in Rio

Peddlers roam Rio’s beaches offering an enormous range of items including footballs, bathing suits and jewellery. Be aware that the price might be good but the quality likely isn’t. For better quality bikinis and swim trunks, consider heading to Blue Man, Brazil’s most successful beachwear label. Or visit Barra Shopping, one of the largest malls in South America, which boasts more than 570 stores, a movie theatre, a bowling alley and a range of restaurants and bars. Rio also hosts a number of popular markets including the Hippie Fair in Ipanema, where more than 700 vendors sell one-of-a-kind jewellery, clothing, leather shoes, paintings and gourmet goods each Sunday. Like many markets, bargaining is accepted.

Responsible travel tip

You may come across goods made from the skins of protected species (such as reptiles or wild cats). Keeping with Intrepid’s commitment to responsible travel, please refrain from supporting any business that exploit or abuse endangered animals.

Festivals and events

Rio carnival.

Colourful, raucous and hedonistic, there’s a reason Rio’s Carnival is one of the best-known parties in the world. The parade of elaborate floats and colourful, bejewelled dancers in barely-there costumes dancing to samba may be the main event, but the revelry begins a whole month before. Each February in the lead up to Lent, the caipirinhas are free-flowing as clubs hold glitzy parties and bandas (street parties also called blocos) take over the streets.

Parintins Folklore Festival (Bumba-mei-boi)

An annual spectacle that commemorates a legend about a pregnant woman’s craving for bull tongue, the murder of a bull to satisfy said craving, and the bull’s magical resurrection. Two teams retell the myth and attempt to outdo each other using flamboyant song and dance routines, colourful costumes and giant floats. Spectators cheer and moo to performances at this three-day June celebration.

Festa Junina

This nationwide festival held each June celebrates saints John the Baptist, Anthony and Peter, but celebrations in the north-east take on a distinctly country flair. People flock to rural fairs wearing straw hats and plaid shirts to feast on corn and sweet treats, play games and dance the quadrilha (similar to a square dance).

Rio New Year’s Eve

Join two million revellers decked in white at Copacabana beach for a unique New Year’s celebration. Before the concerts and massive fireworks display begins, Candomble worshippers (an Afro-Brazilian religion) push boats filled with flowers and other offerings into the sea in exchange for safe sailing in the upcoming year.

Public holidays that may impact travel include:

Independence Day

  • Our Lady of Aparecida

All Soul's Day

  • Republic Day

Please note dates of Brazil's public holidays may vary.

Passport holders from Australia , Canada and the United States must apply for an e-visa to enter Brazil for tourism, transit or business  on the Brazilian government's e-visa website . If you have a valid physical visa on your passport for the purpose of your visit, you do not need to apply for a new visa.

Is tipping customary in Brazil?

Tipping is up to the individual when travelling in Brazil. It isn’t expected but will be happily received by service workers like taxi drivers and waiters. What are the toilets like in Brazil?

Toilets in Brazil will vary depending on what area you are travelling in. Flushable, western-style toilets are common in the cities large hotels, malls and clubs but more modest squat toilets are the standard in rural areas and while camping. Either way, carrying a supply of toilet paper and soap is a good idea, as these aren’t always available in public toilets.

Is Brazil a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Brazil is a welcoming destination for LGBTQIA+ travellers. There is no law against homosexuality, and the country tends to be more tolerant than anywhere else in South America.
