When asking for directions in English, you need to understand the directions given to you as well. In this article, we will teach you expressions for giving directions.

Knowing these expressions will help you find your way the next time you're traveling in an English-speaking country.

How to get to a place

•  Go straight up/down Jones Boulevard. This means that you need to move in one direction, either up or down the road. •  Turn left/right at Mango Street. This means that when you find Mango Street, you need to change direction, either to the left or to the right. •  Walk along the post office. This means you should walk near the post office. •  Take the first street on your left/right. This means that you need to turn left or right on the first (or second, third, etc.) street you see. •  At the traffic light, turn left/right. This means that when you reach the traffic light , you need to change direction, either to the left or to the right. •  Walk over the bridge. This means you need to cross the bridge.

Where to find the place

•  It's in front of you. This means that the place you are looking for is facing you. •  It's opposite Café France. This means that the place you are looking for faces Café France. •  It's on the corner of Mango Street and Andrews Road. This means that the place stands at the point where the two roads meet.

When you’re in a country you don’t know, you can easily get lost at some point during the trip, even if you have a map. So it’s really useful to know how to ask for and understand directions in English so you can reach your destination. It’s also great to be able to give directions yourself to tourists or foreign colleagues.

So what words and phrases can help you give and ask for directions? Read on to find out!

First of all, you need to know some basic vocabulary. The most important words and phrases are:

Here are some examples:

•   Go along the street until you reach the traffic lights.
• You’ll see a bank on the left.
• It’s about two blocks from here.
• I prefer going to the airport on the highway because it’s faster.

 Some prepositions and adverbs can also help when you’re giving directions:

For example,

•   My office building is in front of the mall.
• Go straight on for about one kilometre.
• The cinema is next to the bank.

Asking for directions

When you ask for directions, remember above all to be polite. So start by saying one of the following phrases:

•   Hello. Can you help me, please?
• Good morning. May I ask for some help?
• Excuse me, could you help?

 Once you have someone’s attention, you can ask for help to reach your destination. You can do that by using one of these phrases:

•   Could you tell me how to get to the bank?
• Do you know where the museum is?
• We can’t find the subway station. Is it near here?
• Where can we find a park near here?

 If you’re not sure you’re going in the right direction, you can make sure by asking:

•   Are we on the right road to the city center?
• Is this the right way to the mall?
• What’s the best way to get to the airport?

Giving directions

In the same way that you need to ask directions when you travel abroad, foreigners visiting your city might ask you directions, and what better way to practice English than to help them? 🙂

Here are some common phrases you can use:

• Go past the cinema. (Pass the cinema.)
• Go along this road.
• Go straight on/ahead. (Stay on this road – don’t turn.)
• Go through the tunnel.
• At the roundabout, take the first exit.
• Turn left at the crossroads.
• Take the second right.
• It’s on your left.
• You’ll see it in front of you.
• It’s on the other side of the road.
• You’re going the wrong way.

English is essential for communication in most countries.

Wherever you are going, you need to have a good grasp of the basics of the language to get around and communicate at the airport, hotel and everywhere in between.

This post has dozens of travel English phrases to help you navigate any foreign country. Learn what they mean and how you can use them! 

At the Airport

On the airplane, arriving at your destination, riding public transportation, at the hotel, at a restaurant, sightseeing, emergencies, and one more thing....

Excuse me, how do I… ?

If you are flying for the first time, you will need information on how to:

• Check in. When you check in , you are letting the airline know you have arrived. If the person you are talking to tells you to go to the check-in counter, you can follow up this question with “how do I get to the check-in counter?” to get directions. At the check-in counter, you present your ticket , a document that allows you to get your  boarding pass. The boarding pass, in turn, will allow you to board (ride) your airplane.
• Board the airplane. If you are not sure about what you should do before you get on a plane and during your flight, you can ask the airline staff about this. 

Where is the… ?

You will likely ask for general directions to one or more of the following:

• Information desk. As you can guess from the name, the information desk is where you can learn everything you need to know about getting around the airport. You can even ask for a map (a picture guide of the area) from them.
• Gate. A gate is where you will enter to get to the airplane. It is also the place where you wait before boarding your flight. The gate is usually written on your boarding pass. 
• Restroom. A restroom is a place where you take care of personal business like combing your hair, washing your face or using the toilet. Depending on the country you are visiting, this room may also be called a bathroom , washroom, comfort room, loo or toilet .
• Charging station. If your phone has low or no battery, these places can get your device’s battery up to 100 percent again. 
• Restaurant. If you feel hungry while waiting for your flight, you can visit a restaurant where you can eat in the meantime. 

How do I get to… ?

Although they both seem to ask for directions, there is a slight difference between “where is the… ?” and “how do I get to… ?”

“Where is the… ?” will get you a general answer like “(The place you want to go to) is at Building A.”

Meanwhile, “how do I get to… ?” asks for specific directions, so the person you are talking to will reply with “From here, you turn left, and when you see this sign, turn right…” and so on. 

What time is my flight?

Often, it may not be clear what time your specific flight is—in which case, this question will be useful.

What items am I allowed to bring on board?

Airlines usually have rules on what you can and cannot take into the airplane. 

How much luggage am I allowed to carry on?

Your  luggage includes all the bags you are bringing with you for the flight. Airlines often have limits on how much and how heavy your luggage should be.

Are meals included?

A  meal is a collection of food served at one time. Not all airlines provide meals, so it may be good to ask if you will get these before you board.

Excuse me, can you please help me put my luggage away?

Airplanes have baggage  compartments or closed spaces above each of the seats. You can ask the  flight attendant, an airplane employee in uniform who is usually female, to help you put your luggage in its compartment.

Can I please change my seat?

Once you get on the plane, you may want to change your seat because other seats are more comfortable, have a better view, etc.

How much does… cost?

You can ask about the cost of anything you want to buy like the following:

• water bottle
• snack (a small meal)

I would like… , please.

This phrase is the standard and polite way to ask for something that is usually free or something you do not have to pay for. For example, if you are thirsty, you might say “I would like a glass of water, please.”

Does my seat have… ?

There are a few things you can ask permission for on a plane. You can say “Excuse me, I need to…”

• Get out of my seat
• Use the restroom

What time is it?

This is a standard question for figuring out what time of the day it is. It is useful when you are flying over different time zones and when the plane finally lands.

Once you are at your destination (the place you are visiting), some of the useful phrases you can use are the following. 

Just like at the airport when you first arrived, “Where is the… ?” and “How do I get to… ?” are useful phrases when you are at your destination.

Some of the places where you might need directions are:

• Baggage claim area. Remember when you checked in your luggage? This is the place where you claim or get it.
• Currency exchange. A currency exchange is a place where you take the money you use in your own country and get it changed to the money used at your destination.
• Bus stop. Finding a bus stop will be especially helpful if you want to find a cheap way to get around. Asking “where is this bus going?” can also help you know if you are riding the right bus.
• Taxi / Taxi stand. No bus? Take a taxi instead, which is also called a cab in some places. You can usually find a group of taxis at  taxi stands.
• Hotel. Of course, you should provide the name of your specific hotel. 
• Immigration or customs. Immigration or customs is the place where you have to explain why you came to a country and tell officers what your intentions are. 

Sorry, I do not understand what you are saying.

This phrase will help native English speakers know English is not your first language. You can also say “I do not speak English very well” and ask them to “please speak slowly” if you are still having trouble.

I have items to declare. 

Aside from explaining why you are in a certain country, you also have to  declare (make a formal or official statement on) the items that you may need to pay duties  (taxes on items from another country) for.

If you do not have such items, you can simply say “I have nothing to declare.”

I have a connecting flight.

This is how you say you will board another plane to go somewhere else.

I am traveling for…

Depending on why you came to the country, you can say you are traveling for:

• Leisure. Say this if you are traveling because you are on vacation.
• Work. Say this if you are traveling because your company asked you to .
• Family. If you are traveling because you are visiting relatives, let the customs officer know.

I will be here for… days.

You will need to provide the number of days you will be staying in the country, like “I will be here for 90 days.”

If you have it, you can also show your visa , a document that proves you are allowed to enter the country for a certain purpose within a certain period. 

I am staying at…

The customs officer may ask you where you will be sleeping. You can say “I am staying at (the name of your hotel)” or “I am staying at (the address of your family or friend in the country).”

Now that you have arrived, you need to know how to get around. Here are some useful phrases you can use whether you are riding a bus, train or any other form of public transportation.

Does this go to… ?

Before you get on a bus or train, ask whether it is going to the place you want to go. If the driver says no, you can ask “how do I get to… ?” and take note of the directions they give you.

How long does it take to get to… ?

Here, you are asking how many minutes, hours, etc. it will take for the vehicle to get to your destination. 

How much is the fare?

The  fare is the price of riding your public transport.

“Do you accept… ?”

End this question with a mode of payment , which includes cash and cards . 

Excuse me, is this seat taken?

This phrase is useful if you see someone with an empty seat beside or near them, but you want to be 100% sure they do not have a companion. 

I missed my stop. Can you please let me know when we are at the next one?

In an ideal world, traveling would go smoothly. But sometimes, things like not being able to get off at your stop happen! Luckily, you can use this phrase to  get you out of a pickle (get you out of trouble). 

Of course, if you are staying with friends and family, you can skip this section. But if you will stay at a hotel, keep the following phrases in mind.

Greetings! I have a reservation under the name of…

End the phrase with your full name or the name you used to make your reservation. 

When you get to your hotel, go to the front desk.  It is easy to find because that is usually where you will first meet the hotel’s employees. Also, that is where the other guests will probably be!

You want to confirm that you have a  reservation first—that is, proof that you have a room at the hotel where you are staying. Otherwise, you have to look for somewhere else to stay.

What is included in my reservation?

This question asks what services you have already paid for. Of course, there is your room, but you may also want to check for other things like breakfast, pool, spa, etc.

What time is check-in / check-out?

Since you will not be staying at the hotel all the time, you will want to know what time you can  check in and  check out.  

Check in means the time you will be allowed to enter your room, while  check out means the time you should leave your room. 

Does the room have a… ?

You may also want to know about your room’s  amenities (things to help make your stay more convenient and comfortable). For example:

• Bathroom / restroom. Again, the correct term for this place depends on where you are.
• Refrigerator / fridge. A refrigerator or “fridge” is a place to keep your food and drinks cold. Keep in mind that you may have to pay extra for any food or drinks you take out of hotel refrigerators.
• Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is simply a wireless internet connection. You should probably also ask for the Wi-Fi password. ( “What is the Wi-Fi password?” )
• Air conditioner. An air conditioner is a piece of equipment that cools a room.

How many beds are in the room?

This question will help you know if there is enough space to sleep for the number of people in your hotel room.

What floor am I on?

A  floor in this situation refers to the level of the hotel.

If you are on a high floor (like the 30th, for example), you may want to use the elevator , the device that lifts and lowers you between floors of the hotel, to help you get to your room.

My room needs…

Most of the time, housekeeping (the people who clean the room) will make sure you have everything you need. Should they forget, you can say “My room needs…” and finish with:

• Towels. Towels are soft, thick materials you use to dry yourself after taking a bath.
• Toilet paper. Toilet paper are thin white sheets rolled up on tubes. They help you wipe yourself in the bathroom. 
• Bedsheets. “Bedsheets” is a term that includes pillowcases, blankets and all the other pieces of cloth that cover your bed.

Could I please have room service ?

As a guest, you can request services by saying “Could I please have… ?” For example, you can request room service , where someone will come up to your room to deliver food, drinks and other things you may need.

Where is the best… around here and how do I get there?

Since the hotel employees are locals, they will probably know the area more than you do.

Before you check out of your hotel, you can use this phrase and replace “…” with:

• Grocery store. Grocery stores are places where you can buy most types of items.
• Hospital. If you or someone you are traveling with gets sick or injured, you need to know where to go.
• Bank. If you run out of money, you may need to go by a bank to get more.
• Restaurant. Make sure you ask for a restaurant that offers local cuisine or food. 

A table for two, please.

The number indicates how many people will be eating with you at the restaurant. It does not have to be just two: it can be any number of people with and including you. 

I would like to drink…

Finish this phrase with the name of the drink you want. Popular drinks are:

• soda pop (carbonated sweet drinks) 

May I see a menu? 

A  menu will help you decide what you want to eat. 

I would like to order, please.

Once you have decided what to eat and drink, raise your hand and wait for a waiter to come to your table. Then, say this phrase to indicate that you are ready to order or ask questions about the food. 

Could you recommend any popular dishes?

This is a good question to ask if you are not sure what to order.

May I ask if you have dishes that are… ?

You may prefer certain foods to others for personal reasons. For example, you can finish the question with any of the following:

• Vegetarian / Vegan When you say that dishes are vegetarian , that means they are mostly made of plant-based ingredients. When you say they are vegan , it means they do not have any animal ingredients (even eggs or milk!) at all.
• Halal. If you are a Muslim, you want to make sure that what you eat does not go against the laws of your religion. You may need to explain what ingredients make a food halal  or  haram , though.

Can you tell me about any potential allergens in this dish?

Allergens are ingredients in your food that can cause you to have a negative reaction. It may be a good idea to ask about these before you order a dish. The last thing you want is to not enjoy your meal because you got sick!

Can I please have… ?

Fill in the blank with an item off of the menu or one of these items:

• Appetizer. An appetizer is a small dish you eat before the main course (meal).
• Soup. Soup is a common way to start meals. 
• Salad. If it is too warm for soup, try a salad!
• Dessert. A dessert is a sweet dish you eat after the main course.
• A glass of water. If you are not interested in any particular drinks, a glass of water is always a good option. 
• Extra sauce / salt / spice. If you think your dish could use a little more sauce, salt or spice, you can ask if you can have more. 

Can I ask for a refill?

The word  refill comes from the prefix  re- (which usually means “to repeat”) and  fill . If your glass of water is empty and you want more, you can ask for a  refill so your empty glass will have water again. 

May I have the bill? 

The  bill  indicates how much you have to pay after you eat the meal. Make sure to ask for this. In some restaurants, the waiters will not bring it to your table unless you ask.

Of course, your trip would not be complete without souvenirs or items you buy to remember the place you visited! To make the most of your visits to shops, here are a few phrases to keep on hand.

Excuse me, where can I find… ?

Finish the question with what you are looking for.

Excuse me, how much is this?

This is a standard phrase for asking the price or cost of items.

Do you offer discounts?

When you ask for  discounts , you are asking if the item comes at a lower price. Usually, the discount is shown in percentages (%). For example, if an item is $10 and there is a 50% discount on it, the final price would be $5. 

Do you have a sale?

Another way to save money is to watch out for sales or events when you can buy items for much lower than their original cost.

Does this come in a bigger / smaller size?

If you are buying clothes, you may not be able to find something that fits you. In that case, use this phrase to check if they have your size. You can also ask “can I try this on?” to make sure the piece of clothing really fits!

What is your return and exchange policy?

Sometimes, you end up buying an item that you do not like or has defects (something wrong with it). A  return and exchange policy allows you to either return (give back) the item to the store or  exchange (switch or change) it with a similar one. 

What forms of payment do you accept?

Here, you are asking if they accept cash, cards or any other form of payment you have on hand.

Can you recommend something similar to this?

If you find something you like  but not quite or you want more varieties (colors, sizes, etc.) of the same item, this is a good question to ask.

Aside from the stores, you also want to check the sights and sounds of your destination! For those, here are the phrases you can use.

Where is the visitor information center?

The  visitor information center is where you can get everything you need to know about an area—maps, landmarks, restaurants, shops, etc. 

Excuse me, can you tell me what attractions I should check out around here?

There may be so many attractions in the area, you will not know where to start. This question can help you make your itinerary or travel plans for the day.

Are there any guided tours for this area?

Then again, you may not need to explore the area on your own. With a  tour guide , you can plan where you want to go, get information on each attraction and even some interesting tidbits (facts) about them!

Are there any rules and restrictions I should know?

As a visitor, the last thing you want is to get into trouble. You want to know what you should do (the rules) and what you should not do (the restrictions). 

Can you take a photo of me in front of… ?

A trip is not complete without pictures you can post on social media! There are times when you may want to take pictures of yourself in front of a site and that is where this phrase comes in. 

Are there any events or festivals around here?

If you want to enjoy the place the way the locals do, this is a question you should ask. 

Even with careful planning, you may encounter some problems with your travels. Here are some phrases to help you out if something bad happens.

I have lost my…

End this phrase with any  valuables (important items) you lose, such as:

• Passport. If you lost your passport, you need to find an embassy or state organization that represents your home country in the place you are visiting. To ask for directions to the embassy, say “where is the embassy for… ?” and end the question with your country’s name in English.
• Wallet. If someone stole your wallet or something else from you, you need to contact the local police , the organization responsible for dealing with crimes. In the United States, for example, you can call 911 on a phone.
• Way. When you say you have lost your way , you mean you are not sure where you are and where you should go. If you have a destination in mind, you can say “how do I get to… ?” and end the question with where you want to go.

If something bad is happening to you, calling out this word will get people’s attention and—hopefully—get you the help you need.

I feel…

Sometimes, the people who come to help you may need more information about what you need help with. For example, you could say “I feel…”

• Dizzy / Faint. Dizzy or faint means your head feels light, as though it is being turned around and around.
• Sick. If you do not feel well in any way, you should say “I feel sick.”

If your body hurts, you can also say “I am in pain.”

With these travel English phrases, you should be able to get around most countries without much trouble.

The Best Ways to Give and Ask for Directions in English

Ever found yourself lost in a different country where your native language isn't necessarily the language spoken there? Maybe stuck at an airport in between two flights? Yes? Okay, great.

This article will provide you with the best words and phrases for giving and asking for directions in English regardless of where you go and the local language spoken there.

However, before going further into details, I'd like for us to first go over one essential, which all the other words and phrases simply cannot go without.

Excuse Yourself

When asking for directions, never underestimate the power of your first impression on other people. Different cultures have different customs, hence different ways of greeting people , especially in public places.

It is the defining moment before one gets directions that are actually true or gets some at all.

Therefore, when you're asking for directions, it is vital that you always approach a stranger with a simple "Excuse me" or "Sorry" before doing so. An immediate "Hello", "Hi" or "Can I ask you a question?" might exert different reactions and even push people away, depending on the context.

However, an "Excuse me" is simply the perfect introduction to whatever question or conversation you might have. Because English is such a widely spoken language , people will immediately understand that you are trying to converse in English and get themselves ready to help you.

Let's consider the following examples:

Hi. or Hello + main question Can I ask you a question? + main question

While these expressions are pretty straight-forward and easy to utter, they might not exert the required reaction and might actually scare people away if you startle them, as explained above. How about adding "Excuse me" at the beginning of your conversation right before asking your desired question?

Excuse me. Hello. + main question Sorry. Hi. Can I ask you a question? + main question Excuse me. Hi. Can I ask you a question? + main question

Ah… suddenly, the air's a bit clearer. You not only sound pleasant, but people actually want to help you.

Other polite expressions and useful phrases you can throw in there are:

Sorry to bother you. I'm (kind of) lost. I'm struggling to find my way around this map.

The same goes for giving directions. Greet people with a simple "Hello" or "Hi" even if they don't do so in the first place.

Trust me, simple verbal gestures like this can be game-changers as far as getting your conversation with a stranger in a foreign city or country to the next level.

Once you've mastered the art of approaching someone the right way, the next step involves showing how well you can actually lead a conversation in English to either get or give the desired directions, regardless of whether it's in the street, at an airport or right next to your seat on the public transport.

Get Directions Quickly

If you want to ask for directions and get them, you have to be able to use the right expression, phrase or question at just the right time in order to make the person you’re approaching understand you and help you, at the very best.

To do so, here are some extremely helpful utterances that more or less never fail to hit their mark.

Could you (please) tell me where ... is?

Could you tell me where the new Starbucks is?

I'm looking for... Could you (please) tell me where it is?

I'm looking for the Empire State Building. Could you please tell me where it is?

Could you (please) help me find…?

Could you help me find the Rotler's library on 6th Street?

Which way (leads) to...?

Which way to Madison Square Garden?

May I ask where ... is?

May I ask where Marienplatz is?

How do I get to...?

How do I get to the nearest metro station?

Note #1: In the sentences above, "could" can easily be replaced with "can" in each case. However, "could" is a tad bit more polite.

Note #2: Always remember to thank the person helping you by using any of the common English phrases used to show appreciation, such as "Thank you", "Thanks a lot", "Highly appreciate it", "God bless you", etc.

Moreover, it would be even better if you did some research beforehand about the most common greetings in that location to truly show your appreciation, regardless of what you say is in English or not.

Give Directions Cautiously

If you happen to get approached by someone in need of directions, it is your sacred duty to help them. Granted, you yourself might be a foreigner in a foreign country being approached by another foreigner in need of those directions, but isn't that what language is supposed to do - connect people?

Here are some great ways to always lend a helping hand and practice (or flaunt) your English in a conversation where you're the one giving the directions, not the other way around. I'll try to cover as many examples as possible, given the number of different situations one can find themselves in.

Go straight ahead on

Go straight ahead on Route 25 for 2 miles.

Go down Route 25 for 2 miles.

Go along Route 25 for 2 miles.

Follow Route 25 for 2 miles.

Note: The four examples above carry absolutely the same meaning in terms of directions. The verb "go" can also be easily replaced with e.g. "walk", "run", "proceed", "continue", etc. and many other vocabulary items, depending on the context.

Turn right/left

Turn right on 5th and Lurk.

Take a right/left turn

Take a right turn on 5th and Lurk.

Make a right/left turn

Make a right turn on 5th and Lurk.

Note: The three examples above carry absolutely the same meaning in terms of directions, as well. You can show even greater language skill by incorporating even more information in such a short expression, e.g. "take the first/second turn right/left" depending on the context.

Head to the Majestic Fountain and then turn right before the entrance.

And many more…

Now, there are a few more conversational aspects to consider when giving directions to someone:

• Chronological order

Carefully provide correct but clear directions, regardless of how complicated they might seem. You can easily do that by putting the required steps in a somewhat chronological order through the usage of words such as: "First", "Second", "Then", "Once you get there", etc.

First, take the left turn right here. Then, go straight ahead on Road 25 for about 2 miles. You're supposed to reach a big roundabout. Once you get there, take the right exit and proceed...

• Spatial Prepositions

To better explain where a specific place or building is located in relation to something else, use prepositions, such as "over", "under", "around", "next to", "near", etc.

Go around the statue and proceed down the running lane. Once you go under the bridge, there should be a bus station nearby.

• Advice and Suggestions

The easiest route might not always be the fastest one. You know it; I know it. Sometimes, bad traffic or construction work gets in the way of a great traveling experience. If you're aware of that, you should share. Still, try to make your English as clear as possible for any listener.

Going down Route 25 might seem shorter, but you're gonna wanna going to want to take a left turn to Route 26 and take the second exit on the first roundabout. That way, you can avoid any possible traffic. That road usually gets flooded very busy at this time of day. Trust me, I know what I'm talking about!

Oh... and no matter who you're talking to, don't use idioms or uncommon expressions to get your point across. Simple, plain English will suffice. You can still demonstrate your English knowledge and conversational skills without these pretty well.

Of course, that's as long as you don't make any pronunciation mistakes that are not necessarily native-like.

The Round-Up

Whether you're the one giving or asking for directions, it only matters that one doesn't get lost. Wherever you are in the world, the English language will almost never let you down.

A simple "Excuse me" can take you places. However, knowing what to say right after that is what always determines the next step on your journey, regardless of where and how you travel.

Use your English like a pro when you travel. Just try to remember today's tips on your next trip around the world to ensure you or anyone else traveling never misses a destination again.

Airport English Conversation #1 – At the Check-In Desk

Dan is flying from New York to Los Angeles. When he arrives at the airport, he goes to the check-in desk. Listen to the conversation he has with the agent:

Agent:  Good afternoon! Where are you flying to today?

Dan:  Los Angeles.

Agent:  May I have your passport, please?

Dan:  Here you go.

Agent:  Are you checking any bags?

Dan:  Just this one.

Agent:  OK, please place your bag on the scale.

Dan:  I have a stopover in Chicago – do I need to pick up my luggage there?

Agent:  No, it’ll go straight through to Los Angeles. Here are your boarding passes – your flight leaves from gate 15A and it’ll begin boarding at 3:20. Your seat number is 26E.

Dan:  Thanks.

Conversation Vocabulary and Phrases

• Instead of  “Where are you flying today?” the agent may ask “What’s your final destination?”  The answer will be the same!
• You can say  “Here you go” anytime you give something to somebody
• To  check your bags  means to put them on the airplane inside the cargo compartment. The small bag you take with you on the airplane is called a  carry-on . You need to put your carry-on bags through the X-ray machine at security.
• The  scale is the equipment that tells you the weight of your luggage (45 kilograms, for example)
• A  stopover  or  layover  is when the airplane stops in a different city before continuing to the final destination
• If the agent says that your luggage will  go straight through , it means it will go directly to the final destination (and you don’t need to pick it up during your stopover)
• Boarding passes  are the tickets that permit you to enter the airplane
• When a plane begins  boarding , it means that the passengers start to enter the plane. Usually boarding time is 30-60 minutes before takeoff (when the plane leaves)

Other Questions & Phrases for the Airport

• “Excuse me, where is the American Airlines check-in desk?”
• “How many bags can I check?”
• “Will my luggage go straight through, or do I need to pick it up in [Chicago]?”
• “How much is the fee?” If your bag is heavier than the weight limits, or if your bag is larger than the size limits, you may need to pay extra: an  oversized baggage fee  or overweight baggage fee  (this can be $75 to $300) .  Some airlines in the United States also charge a fee for ALL checked bags (usually $15 to $30).
• “Please mark this bag as ‘fragile.’” Say this if you have fragile or sensitive items in your bag that might break
• “Is the flight on time?” The agent will respond either “Yes” if the flight is on time, or “There’s a 20-minute delay” (for example) if the flight will leave later than expected.

Extra questions in the U.S.

On flights going to or inside the U.S., you might be asked some extra security questions before or during check-in. Here are some sample questions:

Answer YES to these questions:

• Did you pack your bags yourself?
• Has your luggage been in your possession at all times?
• Are you aware of the regulations regarding liquids in your carry-on? (Liquids must be 100 mL or less, and stored in a single quart-sized clear plastic bag) More information: TSA.gov

Answer NO to these questions:

• Are you carrying any firearms or flammable materials?
• Have you left your luggage unattended at any time?
• Has anyone given you anything to carry on the flight?

Airport English Conversation #2 – Going through Security

There are two pieces of equipment in security: you put your bags through the  X-ray machine,  and you walk through the  metal detector. Some airports also use a body scanner for a more careful check.  

The  X-ray machine  has a  conveyor belt  that moves your bags automatically through the machine. You can put small items like keys or money into plastic  bins.

In the picture below, the woman is walking through the metal detector. Her suitcase is on the conveyor belt after going through the X-ray machine.

Agent:  Please lay your bags flat on the conveyor belt, and use the bins for small objects.

Dan:  Do I need to take my laptop out of the bag?

Agent:  Yes, you do. Take off your hat and your shoes, too.

(he walks through the metal detector)

[BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP]

Agent:  Please step back. Do you have anything in your pockets – keys, cell phone, loose change?

Dan:  I don’t think so. Let me try taking off my belt.

Agent:  Okay, come on through.

(he goes through the metal detector again)

Agent:  You’re all set! Have a nice flight.

The phrase “you’re all set” is a common expression that means “you’re finished and everything is OK.”

Phrasal Verbs: SET OFF and GO OFF

When the alarm sounds, we say “the alarm went off.” To describe what  caused  the alarm to sound, we say “set off” – for example, “My keys set off the alarm” or “My keys set off the metal detector.”

Airport English: Announcements at the Gate

Airports are divided into  terminals  (the major sections of the airport) and each terminal has many  gates.  The  gate  is the door you go through to enter the airplane. Here are a few announcements you might hear while you are at the gate, waiting for the plane to board.

• “There has been a gate change.” (this means the flight will leave from a different gate)
• “United Airlines flight 880 to Miami is now boarding.” (this means it’s time for passengers to enter the plane)
• “Please have your boarding pass and identification ready for boarding.”
• “We would like to invite our first- and business-class passengers to board.”
• “We are now inviting passengers with small children and any passengers requiring special assistance to begin boarding.”
• “We would now like to invite all passengers to board.” (this means everyone can enter the plane)
• “This is the final boarding call for United Airlines flight 880 to Miami.” (this means it is the FINAL OPPORTUNITY to enter the plane before they close the doors)
• “Passenger John Smith, please proceed to the United Airlines desk at gate 12.”

Airport English Conversation #3: On the plane

The people who work inside the airplane serving food and drinks are called flight attendants.  Both men and women who have this job are called flight attendants. Listen to this conversation that Dan has with the flight attendant when dinner is served on the flight.

Dan:  Sorry?

Flight attendant:  Would you like chicken or pasta?

Dan:  I’ll have the chicken.

Flight attendant:  Anything to drink?

Dan:  What kind of soda do you have?

Flight attendant:  Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, Orange, and Dr. Pepper.

Dan:  A Diet Coke, no ice, please.

Flight attendant:  Here you go.

English Conversation Tips:

If you didn’t understand what the flight attendant said, you can say Sorry?  or  Pardon?  to ask him or her to repeat it.

If you want to ask for something, you can use the phrase  “Can I have…?”  or “Could I have…?” Practice your pronunciation with these common requests:

• “Can I have a pillow?”
• “Can I have a blanket?”
• “Can I have a pair of headphones/earbuds?”
• “Could I have some water/coffee/tea?”
• “Could I have some extra napkins?”

Finally, if you need to stand up, but there is a person sitting between you and the aisle, you can say  Excuse me  and make a motion to start standing up. The person sitting next to you will understand and stand up to let you get out of your seat.

Get directions & show routes

You can get directions for driving, public transit, walking, ride sharing, cycling, flight, or motorcycle on Google Maps. If there are multiple routes, the best route to your destination is blue, all other routes are gray. Some directions in Google Maps are in development and may have limited availability. 

Important: Stay alert when you use directions on Google Maps. Always be aware of your surroundings to ensure the safety of yourself and others. When in doubt, follow actual traffic regulations and confirm signage from the road or path that you’re on.

• On your computer, open Google Maps .

• Click points on the map, type an address, or add a place name.

Tip: To choose another route in any transportation mode, select it on the map. Each route shows the estimated travel time on the map.

Google Maps transportation modes

You can get directions for different modes of transportation in Google Maps. Learn about the differences in features and availability between each mode:

• If you want to change a driving route, click and hold a spot on the route and drag it to a new spot on the map.

• Not all cities have public transit directions in Google Maps. Before you can get transit directions, your local transit agency needs to add their route info to Google Maps.

• If you want directions in an area with ride or taxi services, you can compare ride services with transit and walking directions. Learn how to request a ride .

• Directions to multiple destinations, or waypoints, aren’t available for public transit or flight searches.
• Learn more about how to search for flights .

• Learn how to get directions for motorcycles .

Add multiple destinations

You can get directions to multiple destinations for all modes of transportation except public transit or flight.

• Add a starting point and a destination.

• You can add up to 9 stops.
• Click on a route to get the directions.

Tip : You can search for places along your route.

To change the order of your stops: 

• Find the destination you want to move. 
• Drag the destination.

Preview directions in Street View

• On your computer, under the route you want, click Details.

• Point to a step in the directions. If Street View is available, you get a preview photo.
• To get Street View for other steps in the route, in the bottom-left box, click Previous step or Next step.

Customize your route

• Choose Options .
• Check the box next to "Tolls" or "Highways."
• Get directions.
• After you get your directions, click Leave now .
• To change your travel dates or times, select Depart at or Arrive by .

Taking Advantage Of Live Traffic Updates

As you navigate with Google Maps, the app constantly monitors traffic conditions along your route. If there is heavy traffic, accidents, or road closures ahead, Google Maps will highlight the problematic area on the map using yellow or red markers.

Exploring Nearby Attractions And Restaurants

When you're in a new area, or even just exploring your own neighborhood, Google Maps can be a great tool for discovering nearby attractions and restaurants. 

To start exploring:

• Open Google Maps and zoom in on the area of your interest. You should see several options below the search bar, including Restaurants, Gas, Coffee, Shopping, ATMs, and more. 
• Click on the option you want to explore. For instance, if you are looking for places to eat nearby, select Restaurants to see a list of dining options in the area. Each restaurant will be marked with its location on the map, along with details such as the establishment's name, its rating, and sometimes photos or reviews. 
• Refine your search further by applying filters for rating and distance. 
• After selecting a restaurant that catches your interest, click on it to view more detailed information, including its address, hours of operation, contact details, and directions on how to get there. 

Google Maps also allows you to call the restaurant directly from the app if you wish to make a reservation or inquire about menu items.

You can explore all these categories by swiping right on the options pane below the search bar. To view the full list, click on the More button (three dots) at the very end.

Create A Custom Map To Share With Friends And Family

You can also easily create a custom map and share it with whoever you want on Google Maps. It's a great way to collaborate on travel plans, recommend must-visit places, or simply share your favorite local hangouts.

• Open Google Maps on your computer and sign into your Google account. 
• Click on the menu icon and choose Saved > Maps > Open My Maps. 
• Start a new map by clicking the Create A New Map button.

Maps show path of Alberto as storm moves over Mexico

Alberto , the first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season , is bringing rain, wind and potential flooding to parts of Texas as it moves inland over Mexico. The system was downgraded from a tropical storm to a tropical depression on Thursday morning.

Alberto has already been blamed for three deaths in Mexico. Authorities have said they hope the powerful system, which is forecast to bring as much as 20 inches of rain to some parts of Mexico , can relieve drought in the region as it moves west.

Where is Tropical Depression Alberto headed?

The National Hurricane Center's forecast shows Alberto continuing west across Mexico, where it made landfall early Thursday morning. The storm is expected to continue inland as the day goes on.

The storm is moving at a rate of about 13 miles per hour, the hurricane center said in a briefing, with maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour. As of late Thursday morning, Alberto was about 25 miles west of Tampico, Mexico, and 255 miles south of Brownsville, Texas. Rain was falling on both sides of the border.

Tropical Depression Alberto is expected to dissipate as it moves across Mexico, the NHC said, forecasting that the storm will disappear sometime Thursday or overnight. The downgrade to a tropical depression is the first step in that process.

Fifty-one Texas counties are under a disaster declaration as the storm moves across Mexico.

Where will Tropical Depression Alberto bring rain and flooding?

Maps from the National Hurricane Center show Alberto dropping rain across Mexico and parts of Texas. Photos and videos show flooded streets in the region. Wind and flooding conditions are expected to improve throughout the day, especially in Galveston and Corpus Christi.

Parts of Mexico near Tamaulipas could see between 12 and 16 inches of rain, according to the NHC. Broader swaths of the country, including much of the Veracruz and Oaxaca regions, were forecast to see up to four inches of rainfall.

In the United States, the worst rain was expected near Laredo, Texas. The border city is in a region forecast to receive up to four inches of rain. Other parts of the state, including areas near Corpus Christi and San Antonio, could see up to two inches of rainfall.

Other parts of Texas were prepared for storm surge and flooding. Much of the border and southeastern coast of Texas had at least a 5% chance of flash flooding, according to the NHC. In the Roswell area, there was at least a 15% risk of such flooding.

Along Texas' eastern coast, areas were bracing for storm surge of at least a foot. Between Sargent and the mouth of the Rio Grande, the NHC forecast a storm surge of between one and three feet. Similar storm surge was expected between Sabine Pass and the Vermilion/Cameron Parish Line. For the coastal area of Galveston Bay, the risk was even higher, with the NHC predicting a storm surge of between two and four feet.

Travel information for fans attending P!NK this weekend

Fans attending P!NK at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday 15 June and Sunday 16 June are asked to take note of the following travel information, which includes details of TfL track closures...

Please be advised, there will be no trains calling at White Hart Lane on either show day. Frequent services are anticipated through Northumberland Park, Seven Sisters and Tottenham Hale on Saturday and Sunday.

There are some scheduled track closures elsewhere around the capital on the TfL network including on the District Line, Circle Line, Metropolitan Line, Northern Line and the London Overground.

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium - Getting Here

General Admission and Premium opening: 5pm

• The stadium is served by three stations over the weekend (Northumberland Park, Tottenham Hale and Seven Sisters) providing access to London Underground, Greater Anglia services and numerous TfL buses
• Free high-capacity shuttle bus services to and from the Piccadilly Line at Wood Green and Greater Northern services at Alexandra Palace connect the stadium with other stations and services
• There is ample cycle parking around the stadium and walking routes to and from the stadium to stations and coach parks are all clearly signposted.  Stewards will also be on hand to answer any questions

Arrive early and stay after the concert to take advantage of the wide range of food outlets , bars and entertainment within the stadium.

Tottenham Hale

Tottenham Hale is a fully accessible station with access to and between Victoria Line and Greater Anglia services. Greater Anglia platforms are fully accessible from the concourse, which has entry and exit ramps.

Fans using the Victoria Line, including wheelchair users and those with limited mobility, are advised to use Tottenham Hale rather than Seven Sisters as it is a shorter journey to and from the stadium.

Northumberland Park

Saturday 15 June

Greater Anglia will operate six trains per hour northbound via Northumberland Park in the two hours leading to gates opening. This service will operate between Liverpool Street and Hertford East, Liverpool Street and Audley End, Stratford and Meridian Water and Stratford and Bishops Stortford. The Stansted Express will call at Northumberland Park once per hour after the concert.

Before the concert there will be six trains per hour southbound between Audley End and Liverpool Street, Hertford East and Liverpool Street, Meridian Water and Stratford, respectively. After the concert, the southbound service will increase to 12 trains per hour, with all southbound trains calling at Tottenham Hale, Stratford and Liverpool Street. This increased service post-concert includes four Stansted Express trains.

Sunday 16 June

Greater Anglia will operate five trains per hour northbound via Northumberland Park before the concert. This service will operate between Liverpool Street and Hertford East, Liverpool Street and Audley End and Stratford and Meridian Water. The Stansted Express will call at Northumberland Park once per hour after the concert.

Before the concert there will be four trains per hour southbound between Audley End and Liverpool Street, Hertford East and Stratford, Meridian Water and Stratford, respectively. After the concert, the southbound service will increase to 10 trains per hour, with all southbound trains calling at Tottenham Hale, Stratford and Liverpool Street. This increased service post-concert includes four Stansted Express trains.

Fans are advised to use Northumberland Park if using Greater Anglia services as it is a shorter distance to the stadium than Tottenham Hale.

Seven Sisters

Victoria Line services will be operating every 2-3 minutes in both directions throughout the day until 11.30pm, when there will be six trains per hour throughout the night as part of the night tube service.

Post-concert

We expect approximately half the event attendees to depart the Tottenham area via the Victoria Line. Queues can be expected at the High Road entrance to Seven Sisters station. Northumberland Park and Tottenham Hale will be less busy with no significant delays expected at either station.

Fans are advised to avoid station queues and enjoy the food and drink available in the stadium.

General admission areas will call last orders at 10pm with bars closing at 10.30pm. Premium area bars will call last orders at 10.45pm with bars closing at 11pm and the stadium will close for all guests at 11.30pm.

The stadium is well-served by TfL buses, albeit with some services diverted during the road closure period (from two hours before kick-off until approximately one hour after the final whistle).

Bus diversions will be minimised, so they are back operating on the High Road as soon as possible after the final whistle.

Before and during a concert, services that normally run up and down the High Road (149, 259, 279 and 349) are diverted to the east of the stadium at Lansdowne Road, rejoining the High Road at the Northumberland Park junction.

Stations map

We have installed wayfinding signage from all four train stations to the stadium.

Please refer to the digital wayfinding signs as you leave the stadium to your chosen station.

Please plan your walking route back to the stations as access routes into the stations are normally different due to post-concert queue management arrangements. Please listen to the advice of stewards and station staff.

We encourage fans to make use of the full length of the platform at each station. Moving down the length of the platform will speed up the loading of the trains and decrease the waiting times for your fellow spectators.

Shuttle Bus Services

Fans should note that the Club operates a service between the stadium and Alexandra Palace (Great Northern Services) and Wood Green (Piccadilly Line) stations.

The Great Northern Line will operate five trains per hour through Alexandra Palace throughout the day.

The Alexandra Palace and Wood Green shuttle services operate three hours before and two hours after the concert. However, fans are advised to arrive at the shuttle bus stop at least one hour before stadium arrival to allow for the travel time and security checks at the stadium.

Although the service is free for all fans attending a concert, you will need to register via the link below before booking and present your e-ticket to bus staff before entry onto a shuttle service.

Alexandra Palace Station  (Great Northern Services)

Before a concert, shuttle buses pick-up from Station Road (opposite the station entrance) and drop-off outside Haringey Sixth Form College - a five-minute walk from the stadium. This journey is then reversed after a concert.

Wood Green Station  (Piccadilly Line services)

Before a concert, shuttle buses pick-up on the High Road (opposite the bus garage) from the existing rail replacement stop just 60m from the station and also drop-off at White Hart Lane, outside Haringey Sixth Form College. After the concert, the buses will drop fans outside the Green Rooms Hotel opposite Wood Green Station.

Car Parking

The Club is dedicated to minimising the environmental impacts of its activities across all Club operations, including through the promotion of alternative forms of transport for fans and staff.

As such, there is  no parking available  for general admission fans at the stadium.

The  road closures  also mean that,  if you choose to travel by car, you will not be able to exit any car parking facility within the road closure area  for one hour after the final whistle.

Therefore, in most cases, we discourage fans from driving to the stadium, so please explore your public transport options before travelling.

For those who have booked accessible parking in advance, please be advised you will be sent the full information on your parking location with directions before the event.

One Tech Tip: Use a roaming eSIM on your summer travels to avoid cellphone data fees

LONDON (AP) — For summer trips overseas, a smartphone is essential for most people. How else will you check Google Maps to find your Airbnb, post an Instagram video from the Eiffel Tower, or WhatsApp friends and family back home?

Of course, if you’re using apps that gobble up data while traveling in a foreign country, there’s always a risk of racking up hefty roaming fees from your phone carrier. The solution? An international travel eSIM for your smartphone.

How do you use this technology? Here are some tips.

What’s an eSIM?

If you’ve ever bought a new cellphone, you’re probably familiar with the SIM card. Short for subscriber identity module, the SIM is a little chip the size of a fingernail that fits into a slot on most phones. Without it, you couldn’t get cell service because it contains your account information and phone number.

But physical SIM cards are slowly being replaced by eSIMs — the e stands for embedded — built into newer phones. These digital versions do the same thing and can make life easier, though people used to physical SIMs might find them confusing at first.

Why should I use an eSIM?

They make switching cell carriers easier. And if you’ve bought a new phone recently, you might not even have a choice: Apple got rid of the SIM card tray starting with the iPhone 14 released in September 2022.

They’re especially beneficial for travelers. If you’ve got a compatible cellphone, you can add an eSIM from a virtual carrier that has better data roaming rates than your home network. Many phones will allow you to add more than one eSIM, making it easy to switch back and forth, or — for phones with the capability — use two at the same time.

Think of the convenience: Gone are the days of arriving in a strange country after a long flight, looking for a local phone company’s airport kiosk, carefully popping open the SIM tray with a pin to swap in the new chip, and trying not to lose the existing one.

Where do I get a roaming eSIM and how much will I pay?

The eSIM market is booming. Kester Mann, director of consumer research at CCS Insight, says there are dozens of providers that can be found online, with names like Nomad, Holafly, Easysim, Airhub and Airalo.

“These guys have a role to play because I think they offer a very affordable and attractive opportunity for international travelers,” Mann said.

The boom means there’s plenty of competition keeping rates low. Prices are typically clearly displayed online, either through a menu of packages on the provider’s website or a calculator based on the amount of data needed and trip length.

Some 800 carriers support eSIMs, according to CCS, so international coverage is extensive. Many eSIM providers offer packages based on country or region, so you can check which ones have good rates for the place you’ll be visiting and sign up in advance. Traveling to Europe and need data for a month covering 30 countries? Airalo offers, for example, 10 gigabytes at $37 while Holafly’s package has unlimited data for 69 euros ($75).

For an upcoming trip to Prague, I bought 5 gigabytes of data for just $5 from Global Yo. I was slightly put off by some negative reviews professing problems buying, installing or activating the company’s eSIMs, but I didn’t have any problems myself.

How do I put an eSIM on my phone?

You’ll need a phone that’s unlocked for use with different wireless carriers.

If you’re not setting up a new phone, the typical activation method is with a QR code, or a more conventional string of numbers and letters. If you’re planning a trip and buy one before you leave, it’s a good idea to print out the code if you don’t want to activate right away.

For iPhones, go to your Settings menu, then to either the Cellular or Mobile Service section, then tap Add eSIM. You’ll be prompted to scan the code, or manually enter it. The process is similar for Android users. Samsung has a guide for Galaxy devices, and Google has a help page for Pixel users, while eSIM carriers have step-by-step instructions. Apple has a YouTube video , as well as tip sheets on using eSIMs for international travel and on using two eSIMs simultaneously.

If you’ve got a phone that supports dual eSIMs, you “can pick potentially the best network based on price and or coverage” while traveling, said Mann.

Some carriers have their own apps to manage eSIMs and track data usage.

How do I know if my cellphone can use an eSIM?

More than 200 devices support the technology, CCS Insight says. U.K. phone company Vodafone has a list of compatible devices. Or dial *#06# — an EID code indicates it’s compatible.

For iPhone users, it’s any model released since the XS, XS Max or XR, as well as recent iPads. They’re compatible with any Samsung Galaxy devices released since 2020, and Google Pixel 4 and newer models will work; some Pixel 3 devices also support them.

Does it always make sense to use a travel eSIM?

First check your own carrier’s roaming costs for the places you’re visiting. Sometimes it’s not worth it.

“Roaming costs these days are far lower and less prohibitive than they once were,” said Mann. They’ve even been abolished for European Union residents crossing the 27-nation bloc’s internal borders. But travelers in Britain, which has left the EU, are facing them again for travel to the continent.

Pre-Travel Tips 

All you need to get travel-ready is your smartphone.

• Take pictures. 

Take pictures and screenshots of the important items and documents before you leave for your trip. 

This would include: 

• Your luggage
• The photo page of your passport
• Your ID cards
• Any travel-related confirmations
• Location and contact details for the places you’re staying

Creating an album on your phone or marking the images as favorites will make it easier to find them should you need them. 

It couldn’t hurt to also share these pictures with a trusted loved one, like a significant other or close friend.

• Turn on Notify When Left Behind

Turn on Notify When Left Behind if you use Apple products.  

The feature, available on some iPhones, iPads, Macs, and AirPods, will notify you if you are separated from your items, like if you forget your AirPods in your hotel room. 

To turn Notify When Left Behind on or off, open the “Find My” app, select the device and then toggle the setting on or off.  

• Tell your credit card company about your plans

Have you ever had your card payment declined when paying for something on a trip? That’s probably because your credit card company is picking up unusual activity and flagging it as suspicious. 

Prevent that from happening by informing your credit card company of any upcoming domestic or international travel by setting a travel notification. 

Many credit card companies allow you to set the notification online or via the app, though some companies may not require one at all. 

• Check international phone plans

If you want to use your phone when you're not connected to Wi-Fi while traveling, see what international phone plans your mobile carrier offers that fit your budget. An international plan will allow you to do things like make and receive phone calls, access social media and find directions as long as you have cell service. Without a plan, those functions will only be available when the device is connected to Wi-Fi.
