Guten tag, Germany! WestJet directly connects five Canadian cities to Frankfurt through Condor Airlines codeshare agreement

travel agency frankfurt

Beginning today, WestJet guests will gain direct access to Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) from five Canadian airports through the expansion of WestJet's long-standing partnership with Condor Airlines. Expanding upon the airlines’ previous interline agreement, WestJet and Condor will codeshare for the first time in their 10-year partnership.

Through the agreement, WestJet will sell itineraries on flights operated by Condor Airlines from Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto and Halifax to Germany’s busiest airport, with the ease of a single ticket and through checked baggage, earning WestJet Dollars throughout. Additionally, Condor guests looking to explore Canada can take advantage of WestJet’s expansive domestic network with the same benefits. WestJet will also provide connectivity to the United States for Condor guests connecting through Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto and Halifax later this summer.

“Through the expansion of our partnership with Condor Airlines, we are unlocking amazing opportunities for our guests in Europe and Canada to access an extensive list of tourism destinations on both sides of the Atlantic,” said John Weatherill, WestJet Group Executive Vice-President and Chief Commercial Officer. “Our shared passion for affordable leisure travel has allowed our partnership to evolve to meet the growing demand for transatlantic travel, and we look forward to welcoming the world to Canada this summer.”

"With Condor’s return to Calgary, it’s been high time for us to strengthen our ties with WestJet and improve travel for our passengers and sales partners," says Jens Boyd, Commercial Director at Condor. "Everyone will be able to access our joint codeshare network to Frankfurt and beyond through WestJet.com, and services can be added irrespective of where the ticket was booked. In parallel, we are streamlining connections at all Canadian airports by allowing our passengers to go to their connecting gate right after immigration without having to pick up their luggage first."

CondorxWestJet - 1

Guests from across WestJet’s network will enjoy the convenience of booking their entire journey on one ticket through WestJet.com and the WestJet App starting today and will benefit from a seamless single connection at FRA with baggage transfers and earning WestJet Dollars throughout their journey. Book today at WestJet.com.

Delta celebrates 45 years of nonstop service from Germany to the U.S.

travel agency frankfurt

This past week, Delta celebrated 45 years of non-stop service from Germany to the United States. Since the route opened almost half a century ago, Delta has transported more than 21 million customers between Frankfurt and United States – over 25 times the population of the city itself. Germany remains one of Delta’s most important trans-Atlantic markets.

Delta’s operations have grown significantly over the last 45 years - from four weekly flights between Frankfurt and Atlanta in 1979 to 21 weekly services to three U.S. gateways, Atlanta, Detroit and New York-JFK in June 2024.  In total this summer, Delta will operate 46 weekly flights to the United States from four cities in Germany: Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich and Stuttgart.

travel agency frankfurt

Opening the window to the world

Between November 1991 and 1997, Frankfurt became a Delta hub after the airline acquired Pan Am’s nonstop network from Frankfurt, which included services to Athens, Mumbai, Budapest, New Delhi, Istanbul, Moscow, Prague, St. Petersburg (seasonal), Vienna and Warsaw. By March 1993, Delta operated nonstop flights from Frankfurt to 19 cities across Europe, North America and Western Asia.

travel agency frankfurt

Today, thanks to industry-leading JV partnerships with Air France, KLM and Virgin Atlantic, Delta now offers customers access to 200+ destinations beyond Paris-CDG, Amsterdam and London Heathrow.

“Frankfurt was Delta’s second trans-Atlantic destination after London and has remained a key city in our international network ever since, linking Germany’s financial capital with that of America in New York, the home of the motor industry in Detroit, and our hub in Atlanta from where customers can fly to over 200 destinations,” said Matteo Curcio, Delta’s Senior Vice President EMEAI. “It’s fascinating to see that while Delta’s services have evolved, our customer focus has never wavered, always ensuring a thoughtful, consistently high standard of service for the millions of customers who have flown from Frankfurt over the years.”

History lover and German-born Carla Kronsbein (a DTW-based technical facilitator) shares travel tips about Frankfurt, a charming, yet vibrant city she has cherished since her early days.

travel agency frankfurt

An elevated experience

Delta’s first flight to Frankfurt was operated using a three-engine L-1011 TriStar that offered 241 seats across three cabins: First Class, which featured sleeper seats, Medallion Service (Business Class) and Economy Class.

travel agency frankfurt

Today, Delta’s Frankfurt flights are operated using Airbus A330-200 aircraft featuring all four Delta experiences – Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+ and Main Cabin. Delta One customers enjoy fully flat-bed seats with individual aisle access, while seats in Delta Premium Select offer more space and recline.

Always innovating

Delta began visual in-flight entertainment on flights in 1978 (audio entertainment “Words and Music” launched in 1970), with movies projected onto large, shared screens. Today, customers flying on all international routes enjoy 1,000+ hours of complimentary Delta Studio, with entertainment on demand on individual screens at every seat.

Delta Sync Seatback, currently available on a growing number of domestic U.S. flights, offers best-in-class content and smart TV features designed to feel like streaming services customers have used at home – including remembering where they left off in a movie.

When Delta’s first Frankfurt flight took off, internet connectivity in the air was an unfathomable concept. Today, Delta customers can always stay connected through free mobile messaging via iMessenger, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger. Fast, free Wi-Fi by T-Mobile is available on domestic Delta flights for Sky Miles members and is being installed on international routes.

Savory sky-high dining

Customers flying on Delta’s Frankfurt services in 1979 enjoyed complimentary in-flight dining, just as they do today. Delta’s Medallion Service was prepared to deliver an experience to make travelling for business more enjoyable with gourmet entrées served on fine china and accompanied by cocktails, wines and champagne.

Delta’s ambition to deliver a restaurant-style experience in the sky still remains. Within Delta One, a chef-curated, multi-course dining experience comes paired with sommelier-selected fine wines and is followed by decadent desserts, including Delta’s iconic ice cream sundae. Entrees in Delta One and Delta Premium Select can be pre-selected up to seven days in advance of travel, allowing customers to enjoy a more personalized experience.

Delta's approach to being a step above has been noticeable in its in-flight entertainment, culinary options and style of flight attendant uniforms.

When Delta launched a brand-new look for flight attendant uniforms in June 1979, the “Golden Anniversary Ensemble” celebrated 50 years of scheduled Delta passenger service and was designed by Pat Ashley of Omniform.

As recently as this March, Delta unveiled  protypes of its new uniforms designed by GPS Apparel by Gap Inc.   Anchored in deep navy blues and rich burgundy, with accents of bright red and white – these mark a return to a more classic color palette inspired by Delta’s brand identity and heritage.

When Delta's amenity kits were introduced in April 1978, they featured various self-care products like Michaud shave cream, lotion, and more in a leather pouch.

Delta's amenity kits have amplified luxury and comfort with the airline's brand-new partnership with Missoni for Delta One customers.  The kit features the iconic zig-zag pattern on the interior and exterior, with contents from Grown Alchemist skin care products, a bamboo toothbrush and toothpaste, an eye mask, ear plugs, socks and a pen.

Delta and Missoni – a brand known for its creative use of colors and patterns – have elevated Delta One with a new customer amenity kit, which features Missoni's signature textured zigzag pattern on the exterior of the bag.

Delta's long-standing connection to Germany demonstrates the airline's commitment to constant innovation and elevated service for years to come.

Ryanair Calls European Air Traffic Control ‘Shambolic’ as Delays Mount

Meghna Maharishi , Skift

June 28th, 2024 at 3:20 PM EDT

European airlines have delayed hundreds of flights due to air traffic control restrictions caused by severe weather in the region.

Meghna Maharishi

As parts of Europe face severe weather conditions, the region has placed air traffic control restrictions that are causing hundreds of flight delays.

EasyJet, a low-cost carrier, has nearly 50% of its flights delayed. British Airways has 36% of its flights delayed and Lufthansa 39% as of Friday afternoon, according to flight tracking site FlightAware .

“Like other airlines, due to European Air Traffic Control restrictions resulting from adverse weather conditions across Europe, we have unfortunately had to make some schedule adjustments,” British Airways said in a statement.

EasyJet also said it was experiencing “some disruption delay.”

Lufthansa did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Ryanair took a harsher stance, calling for reform to the region’s air traffic control.

Currently, around 35% of Ryaniar’s flights are delayed, according to FlightAware. Ryanair largely attributed the delays to air traffic controller staffing shortages and equipment issues.

“It is unacceptable that 1 in every 4 of Ryanair’s first wave departures today were delayed due to ATC staff shortages and equipment failures,” Ryanair chief operating officer Neal MacMahon said in a statement.

“We call on EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to take action to urgently reform Europe’s shambolic ATC services,” MacMahon continued.

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Airports in London, Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Zurich and Paris also faced an increased number of delays Friday morning, according to FlightAware.

Air Traffic Controller Shortages Hit Europe Hard During a Busy Summer

Since the pandemic, an acute air traffic controller shortage coupled with a surge in travel demand has led to flight disruptions across the region. Germany and France have been particularly hard hit by the staffing shortages.

French air traffic controllers also went on strike in April after failing to reach a deal with the country’s government, causing thousands of delays and cancellations.

In 2022, air traffic controller shortages led to chaos across multiple European airports during the summer. For example, Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport had to implement capacity caps, prompting carriers to slash schedules.

The International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers’ Association previously said the delays caused by the staffing shortages cost around 800 million euros. The association partly attributed the staffing shortages to a reduction in hiring and training new air traffic controllers in an effort to cut down on costs.

IFATCA executive vice president Frederic Deleau previously told Skift that too little recruitment in the past decade and early retirement packages offered to some air traffic controllers during the pandemic contributed to the shortage.

Help! Qatar Airways Denied Us Boarding Because of a Broken Link.

A woman and her Chinese-born son were set to return to China for the first time since the pandemic, but their airline would not let them fly without filling out a health form they could not access.

An illustration shows a QR code against a blue background with a hand reaching out of the code.

By Seth Kugel

Dear Tripped Up,

I am a single American mother living in Jordan and working for the United Nations. In September 2019, I adopted my then 5-year-old son from China, and promised him we would return to visit his country every year. But the pandemic broke out. When China finally reopened to tourists in 2023, we got visas and booked a July flight to Beijing via Doha on Qatar Airways, paying about $1,400 total. My now 9-year-old had worked hard to maintain his language and was excited, but nervous. At that time, the Chinese government required passengers to fill out a “Health Declaration Form” in advance or upon arrival. The link on the Qatar Airways website was broken, but I confirmed online and with friends who had recently traveled to China that I could fill it out upon arrival. At the airport, Qatar Airways disagreed, and when I once again couldn’t get the form to work, we were denied boarding. My son collapsed on the airport floor, sobbing. I rebooked for the next day, and we flew to Beijing via Istanbul on Royal Jordanian and China Southern for $1,882. Neither airline requested to see the QR code showing my form had been approved: All passengers upon arrival were made to fill out new forms. Qatar Airways mostly refunded the tickets — we received $1,185 — but refused to admit it was wrong. Considering the more expensive last-minute flight and other costs (such as rebooking domestic flights and trains in China) we are out about $930. I believe the airline should provide a flight voucher that compensates us for that amount. Can you help? Elizabeth, Amman, Jordan

Dear Elizabeth,

Your run-in with the complex world of international travel documentation was especially devastating because of the emotional stakes this trip represented for your family. But confusion over documentation leads to denied boarding “thousands of times a day,” said Max Tremaine, the chief executive of Sherpa , a company that maintains a database of international entrance requirements for travelers.

Not to excuse Qatar Airways for what I will charitably call a vigorous over-enforcement of the rules, but those frontline airline workers facing long lines at check-in can have a difficult task, making snap judgments on whether travelers have sufficient documents or not.

Countries all have their own entry rules depending on the passports that travelers hold and where they are coming from, and airlines are fined when they mistakenly allow people to fly. The decision may be straightforward when their customers are an American family with valid passports headed direct from New York to London for a week’s vacation. But travel can be complicated — consider, say, when a Dutch banker is on his way to Bangladesh via Cairo or an Australian trapeze artist with a one-way ticket heads to a performance in Kyrgyzstan through Frankfurt. The pandemic only complicated this complicated system. In your situation, your itinerary had you going through Qatar Airways’ hub in Doha, meaning those behind you in line in Jordan were probably headed to dozens of countries, all with their own rules.

In its responses to your complaints, Qatar Airways cited information from Timatic, a system many international airlines use to track the ever-changing entry and departure rules. One email response read: “At the time of your travel, a QR code for China was mandatory before boarding the flight, and also as per Chinese regulations.”

When I contacted the airline, I got a similar answer in a statement from Craig Thomas, Qatar’s vice president for sales in the Americas. “Passengers traveling to China were required to complete an Online China Customs Health e-Declaration prior to boarding the aircraft,” he wrote, noting that local entry requirements are “often complicated” and that the airline is “committed to assisting our passengers in navigating any issues that may arise.”

But Qatar is incorrect about what Timatic was advising at the time. Timatic is run by the International Air Transport Association, a trade organization better known as I.A.T.A. The group’s assistant director who runs Timatic from the Netherlands, Mahir Sahin, sent me the actual information Qatar Airways’ staff would have been relying on in July 2023:

“Passengers must complete an ‘Exit/Entry Health Declaration Form’ and present a QR code before departure or upon arrival.”

The “or upon arrival” bit applied to your situation, as you discovered on your second itinerary. When I asked Qatar Airways about this apparent oversight on their part and asked if it would change their decision not to reimburse you with the requested credit, they did not respond.

But airlines often act extra carefully around such matters, as they are wary of those government fines if they fly passengers without proper documentation. Timatic holds no official status, said Mr. Sahin. The airline is ultimately responsible.

Mr. Sahin explained an agent’s thinking at the check-in counter: “The agent who is checking you in does not know whether everything that you enter will be accepted by the government.”

Airlines at times still resort to risk management,” he said, “making judgment calls on boarding a passenger, especially in cases where government rules and regulations leave room for interpretation.”

But there are precautions you and other travelers can take to reduce their risk.

International documentation requirements differ, so it is worth reading the country’s own policies as well as the U.S. State Department’s recommendations.

But the best strategy, said Mr. Sahin, is to use the same source that supplies the airline their information on entry requirements. Many international carriers provide online resources powered by data from Timatic (or other suppliers like Sherpa) that allow passengers to read what they read. (Qatar Airways’ Travel Requirements page uses Timatic data.)

You can also check the databases on your own, using this rather awkward but perfectly functional page for Timatic, and this more user-friendly but not necessarily as detailed one for Sherpa.

At the end of the day, though, as you discovered, there is still room for airline agents to interpret, and sometimes misinterpret, the rules. This is especially true when you are connecting through an airline’s hub to a third country and the agent may be unfamiliar with that destination’s immigration procedures.

Even that American family heading to London can theoretically be required to prove they’ve arranged accommodations, according to the British government . Timatic doesn’t mention that in its directives to airlines, and it is, for most travelers, unlikely to happen.

But when Timatic does mention a requirement, travelers should take it seriously even if they find conflicting information elsewhere.

I received an email from a California woman who was denied boarding by Avianca for a trip from Los Angeles via San Salvador and Bogotá, Colombia, to La Paz, Bolivia. In Los Angeles, an Avianca worker did not let her board, telling the traveler she needed passport photos and a copy of recent bank statements. She countered that there is no mention of this requirement on the State Department’s page on entry requirements for Bolivia . But that was the wrong place to look. If she had consulted Avianca’s Timatic-supplied page on travel requirements, she would have seen a requirement passengers must have a passport photo and be able to provide “proof of funds” upon arrival, and “these could be bank statements.”

She rebooked for the next day, got photos and dutifully printed out the bank statements. But you know how the story goes: Bolivian officials asked for neither.

Nike stocks see their biggest drop since 2001 amid weak fiscal outlook

The Nike logo

Nike Inc. shares sank after the sneaker company’s full-year outlook missed expectations, stoking investor concerns about waning demand and competition from upstarts On and Hoka, as well as rival Adidas.

The world’s largest sportswear company sees revenue declining in the mid-single digits in the company’s current fiscal year, which began this month. Analysts had expected growth of about 2% this year, according to estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

The shares fell as much as 18% on Friday morning — Nike’s biggest fall since 2001 — wiping out billions in market value. The stock had already declined 17% over the last 12 months.

Other athletic retailers including JD Sports Fashion and Puma were dragged down. Adidas gained early Friday in Frankfurt, Germany, but the stock later erased the gain.

After years of dominance, Nike is struggling to churn out hot-selling footwear to replace top sellers such as Air Force 1 and Dunk sneakers. The worsening performance raises the pressure on senior leaders.

Chief Executive John Donahoe has resorted to layoffs and other belt-tightening measures after a move to prioritize Nike’s own sales channels failed to produce the promised levels of profits and growth.

In recent years, the company also curtailed its reliance on retail partners, which in turn have begun pushing rival brands. The wave of competition from newer brands such as On Holding and Deckers Outdoor Corp.’s Hoka pushed Nike to vow to prioritize sports, new products and wholesale partners.

The trajectory contrasts with that of Adidas, whose new chief executive, Bjorn Gulden, has embraced retail partners again and sped up the introduction of new products like the retro Samba sneaker, which has become a hit and fueled a new era of growth. He’s also sharpened the company’s focus on athletic performance.

Nike’s revenue in the fourth quarter fell 1.7% to $12.6 billion, missing the average of analyst estimates. A notable laggard was the Converse subsidiary, known for its Chuck Taylor sneakers, where revenue plummeted 18% due to soft sales in both North America and Western Europe.

Donahoe took over Nike in January 2020, following many years leading tech companies including ServiceNow Inc. and EBay. Before that, he had spent nearly two decades at the management consulting firm Bain & Company Inc., where in 1999 he became chief executive.

Some analysts have criticized Donahoe’s leadership approach. Sam Poser of Williams Trading said recently that Nike’s current senior executives lack the “instinct and experience that the prior team had.”

That’s left Nike in a “push model” situation, Poser said, whereby a company has to convince consumers to buy its products rather than the opposite scenario, where people are struggling to get their hands on the brand’s shoes and apparel.

It’s a marked difference from what Nike was experiencing for much of the past decade, during which it has basically doubled revenue from $25 billion in 2013 to more than $50 billion today. While annual sales dipped during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the growth has otherwise been remarkable until recent quarters.

Now, Nike leaders are asking for patience as the company looks to accelerate the release of new franchises in the fitness and lifestyle categories in the second half of this fiscal year and then bring on more new products over the next couple of years.

“A comeback at this scale takes time,” Chief Financial Officer Matt Friend said during the company’s call with analysts. But he cautioned that shifting the product lineup will erode sales in the short term.

Nike executives blamed the slowdown in part on lifestyle brands, including Air Force 1 and Nike Dunks. The category’s sales fell for the first time since the start of the pandemic, when demand for casual attire took off.

The issues could prompt double-digit downgrades to analysts’ earnings expectations for the company during this year and next, according to analyst James Grzinic of Jefferies. Moreover, the era of European shoe companies’ stock reactions tracking Nike’s is breaking down.

Adidas is now the “preferred sporting brand for global investors” as Nike and Lululemon Athletica Inc. lose momentum, Grzinic said in a note.

Weakness in Nike’s own sales channels is also a “reason for concern, as the activewear giant could be turning its core shoppers away due to lack of newness,” said Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Poonam Goyal.

Mexico vs Ecuador Copa America game in Glendale: Details, how to watch, get tickets

travel agency frankfurt

Mexico faces a must-win situation against Ecuador on Sunday in the final Copa America Group B match for both teams Sunday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale.

A 1-0 win over Jamaica followed by a 1-0 loss to Venezuela puts Mexico at a disadvantage in earning one of two berths in the knockout round of the South American soccer championship tournament. That's because Ecuador, also with a win and a loss, has scored four goals to just one total for Mexico in Copa America games, and if the match on Sunday ends in a draw, Ecuador would advance based on a tiebreaker. If Ecuador wins, Mexico is eliminated outright. Only a win for Mexico would ensure it of moving on to the quarterfinals.

Group leader Venezuela has two wins, is already through to the next round and plays the last-place team Sunday, Jamaica, which has already been eliminated from advancement in the tournament.

Mexico has millions of fans in the United States and is the "home" team at practically every match it plays in the U.S. That will be the case Sunday in Arizona. But the former kings of North American soccer always seem to be going through some kind of turmoil, and a loss to Ecuador could result in yet another firing of a head coach.

Jaime "Jimmy" Lozano doesn't seem to have the full respect of all of his players, who didn't appear to listen to him when he called for a specific player to take a potential game-tying penalty kick late in Wednesday's loss to Venezuela. Instead, another player took the kick and missed wide, and Mexico ran out of time. The Mexican soccer federation could once again be seeking a new manager should Mexico be eliminated from Copa America in the group stage.

"CONMEBOL and Concacaf (South American and North American soccer federations) understand perfectly the need in the States for soccer. There is such a surge in this country for futbol," said Lindsay Casinelli, a native of Venezuela who is working Copa America as a studio host for Spanish language networks Univision and TUDN. "In facilities, area, no other country can compare to what we have here.

"I think this is going to be the best Copa America ever," she added. On the East Coast, megastar Lionel Messi is selling out NFL stadiums with Argentina as they aim for another trophy.

Here's everything else you need to know for Sunday's Copa America match:

When is Mexico's Copa America 2024 game against Ecuador?

Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Phoenix on Sunday, June 30. Tickets remain available via SeatGeek for $80 and up.

Where will Mexico's Copa America 2024 game against Ecuador be played?

The Mexico-Ecuador Copa America 2024 game will be held at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, home stadium for the NFL's Arizona Cardinals. State Farm Stadium has hosted the Mexican national team 12 previous times since 2007, and Mexico's record is 6 wins, 2 losses and 4 draws.

How to watch Mexico vs Ecuador Copa America game

The match can be seen on FOX and TUDN (Spanish). Streaming available on  Fubo .
