Ideas from one Spanish teacher to another

How to teach rooms of the house in Spanish

how-to-teach-rooms-of-the-house-in-Spanish

Looking for a fun way to teach house vocabulary in Spanish? Here are 5 great activities to get you started!

1. Give the students a guided tour of your house in Spanish

Make a video giving a guided tour of each room in your house, describing the furniture and the color of the walls.

My students always enjoy seeing my home and it usually inspires them to make their own video tours in Spanish. This eventually becomes one of the choices I offer for their summative assessment. If students are uncomfortable giving a tour of their own home, they also have the option to design and describe a dream home through drawing, clipart, Google Images, or Minecraft! (See #4 to learn more about Minecraft!)

2. Visit Air BnB –  en español!

Students work in groups to book an AirBNB in a Spanish-speaking city of their choice. The website allows them to read authentic text in Spanish that includes house vocabulary such as rooms and amenities in each room.

AirBnB-in-Spanish-activity

It’s a fun way for students to explore housing in other countries as well as currency and other cultural elements in Spanish. It also gives us the opportunity to address the 5C’s of language learning: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. Students reflect by comparing and contrasting types of rooms and homes they see in other communities and cultures.

3. Read a story with house vocabulary in Spanish

Read a story about Mr. Potato Head’s house in Spanish! Students will learn all the rooms of the house in Spanish with this silly story! Mr. Potato Head gets taken by the family dog and Mrs. Potato Head has to run all over the house to find his missing pieces. This story offers great repetition and fun follow up activities to practice the rooms of the house in Spanish. Here is a preview of the audio book:

4. Design a house using Minecraft

Are your middle school student as obsessed with Minecraft as mine? I’ll be honest with you, I’ve never taken the time to learn how to use this program, but I haven’t needed to because my students are already experts! I ask them to design a house and give a presentation describing each room of the house in Spanish. They LOVE it!

5. Listen to native speakers talk about the rooms of their houses in Spanish

This is another great way to bring culture into a sometimes dry unit. Expose students to homes from around the world by showing them video clips and providing them with listening comprehension practice in Spanish. In this activity, students will hear people talk about their homes as well as view commercials for furniture stores and Barbie’s Dream House in Spanish! I use these activities to promote listening to Spanish outside the classroom by assigning one or two listening comprehension activities per night for homework. Click on the image below for 5 authentic recordings and activities with house vocabulary in Spanish.

If you like these suggestions for teaching the rooms of the house in Spanish and want to see exactly how to teach them in your classroom, check out this unit plan. It includes two and a half weeks of activities and day-by-day teacher lesson plans to take away all the guesswork! Since the lesson plans were written by a teacher and tested out by middle school students, they are very detailed and easy to follow, saving you hours of time!

Home Bunch - Interior Design Ideas

I have never been a huge fan of Spanish Homes until I saw this Modern take on Modern Spanish design. Beautiful arched black windows and the interior arches give this new-construction home a new meaning to Spanish architecture and, as always, Trickle Creek Homes knows how to set the bar high.

This Modern Spanish home is a “kick-your-shoes-off and get comfy” kind of house. The arch detailing gives it an old world feel while the modern windows keep it bright and airy. The kitchen is perfect for hosting dinner parties and the open floor plan flows beautifully, which is perfect for a family!

Get ready to fall in love with this new take on Modern Spanish home design. It will make you rethink your personal taste on architectural details.

Rooms in Spanish: Dining Room – El comedor

The dining room is a central part of the home where your family comes together to share meals. While you’re in this room, you can start labeling its furniture and common items, as well as basic foods. Then it’s your turn to use the Spanish phrases below to ask for something or ask others if they need something. Let’s get to it!

Los Muebles del Comedor (Dining Room Furniture)

Los artículos del comedor (dining room items), la comida (food), en la mesa (at the table).

While you’re enjoying your meal at the table, you can use plenty of handy verbs to describe what you’re doing, what you want, or what you plan to do. The most relevant phrases are:

Poner la mesa – to set the table

Antes de comer, ponemos la mesa. Before we eat, we set the table.

Bendecir la mesa / dar gracias – to say grace

Abuela, ¿usted quiere bendecir la mesa? Grandma, do you want to say grace?

Disculpar de la mesa / retirarse de la mesa – to excuse (oneself) from the table

Me disculpan de la mesa, por favor. Please excuse me from the table.

Mi hijo, te puedes retirar de la mesa. Son, you can excuse yourself from the table.

Limpiar la mesa / quitar la mesa – clear the table

¿Dónde está el cuchillo para untar la mantequilla? Where’s the knife for spreading the butter?

¡Ya me llené! I’m full now!

La Sobremesa

La sobremesa is a Spanish tradition that has no equivalent in the English language or Anglophonic cultures. It’s the time right after a meal (lunch or dinner) when everyone sits together relaxing and having a conversation. It usually lasts from 30 to 60 minutes but during the holidays it’s known to last a little longer.

What we might call the “after-dinner conversation time” is generally accompanied by a choice of sweet digestive liqueurs served in small glasses, which they call a chupito in Spain, and some coffee.

Here’s some useful vocabulary to know in relation to la sobremesa :

Estar de sobremesa – to sit around the table after lunch/dinner

Regreso en una hora; ahorita estoy de sobremesa con mis amigos. I’ll be back in an hour; right now I’m sitting around the table after lunch with my friends.

Quedarse de sobremesa – to stay at the table

Espero que tengan tiempo para quedarse de sobremesa. I hope you all have the time to stay at the table after dinner.

La conversación de sobremesa – table talk

Me encantó la conversación de sobremesa que tuvimos ayer con mis suegros. I loved the table talk we had with my parents-in-law after dinner yesterday.

465 Spanish House Vocabulary Terms

So you want to learn Spanish. Where do you begin?

Start at home.

It’s simple, straightforward and classic. It’s a paradise of practical knowledge. It may even be where you spend most of your time. And you’re surrounded by great material for learning Spanish.

In this post, I’ll introduce you to a wealth of words and phrases you’ll be able to use every single day, right at home.

1. General Spanish House Vocabulary

2. kitchen — la cocina, more kitchen vocabulary, 3. dining room — comedor, tableware and accessories, 4. bedroom — el cuarto / el dormitorio, furniture and appliances, storage and organization, 5. bathroom — el baño, fixtures and appliances, furniture and storage, accessories and other items, 6. living room — la sala de estar, appliances and electronics, accessories, 7. backyard — el patio trasero, structures and features, 8. front yard — el jardín delantero, features and decor, 9. laundry room — el cuarto de lavar / el lavadero, cleaning supplies, accessories and items, 10. nursery — guardería, toys and playtime, safety items, 11. office — la oficina / el estudio, electronics, supplies and accessories, 12. garage — el garaje, tools and equipment, automotive supplies, 13. attic — el ático, insulation and utilities, structural elements, how to learn spanish house vocabulary, label, label, label, talk to yourself, practice every day, and one more thing….

nice leather sofa in lounge

Before I move on to room-specific vocabulary, here are some basic house words in Spanish that you’ll need to know in order to speak about your home:

Kitchen-cabinets

How can you soak up all this new Spanish vocabulary?

Go into every room and label everything. I mean everything. If you have to put a sticker on the dog, do it!

Labeling will help you see the words every day . In marketing, it’s said that you have to see something seven times before you will buy it. The same idea applies here. You have to see a word over and over again to have it added permanently to your vocabulary.

You don’t even have to make your own labels if you opt for a Spanish Vocabulary Stickers set, which gives you a bunch of handy and durable word labels for items around your home and office.

Start talking to yourself in Spanish. Say things aloud.

For example, if you walk into the kitchen for lunch, you can literally say:

Quiero comer algo para el almuerzo.   (I want to eat something for lunch.)

By speaking out loud, you train your tongue for Spanish. Your fluency increases. By speaking and hearing yourself speak, you will learn more quickly. Yes, it will feel weird, but it is worth it. Your Spanish will skyrocket with this little trick.

This is probably the most important suggestion. You need to get used to using Spanish every day.

The labeling trick from earlier can make sure you’re constantly exposed to the vocabulary. You can also make your own flashcards and carry them around to flip through. It can also help to read Spanish texts or watch Spanish videos that would likely contain house-related vocabulary, such as house-decor magazines or video tours of buildings.

FluentU takes authentic videos—like music videos, movie trailers, news and inspiring talks—and turns them into personalized language learning lessons.

Describing a House in Spanish: SER + Adjectives

Hola and welcome! In our previous lesson, we covered the most common vocabulary for rooms and parts of the house , “habitaciones y partes de la casa”, as well as how to use the verbs HABER, TENER and ESTAR.  In this lesson, we will learn more about how to use SER with common adjectives to make grammatically correct sentences and paragraphs to describe a house in Spanish and the rooms or areas it has. Apart from reviewing the verbs and vocabulary for this topic, we will also talk a little about likes and dislikes, this time applied to the things we like or dislike about the house in Spanish. Let’s begin…

Vocabulary review: The House in Spanish – La casa

First, we will review the vocabulary related to rooms and parts of the house in Spanish by looking at the picture below. Below each picture, there is a simple description using SER with adjectives (the words in magenta), besides other important verbs we will study in the lesson. Generally speaking, people will use SER with adjectives to describe things or people, e.g. BONITO (beautiful) and DE TEJAS (made with tiles). The examples in the picture also make use of other verbs that are very useful when talking about the house, such as HABER, TENER and ESTAR.

Using SER plus adjectives for describing rooms and parts of the house in Spanish

How to Describe a House in Spanish: SER with adjectives

Common spanish adjectives for the house.

Let’s start by learning some  basic adjectives to describe a house in Spanish and the rooms in it . We could use many adjectives, but possibly the ones that best fit for house descriptions in Spanish are those shown in the image below, some of which can be used to describe the house in general or specific rooms, as shown in the examples at the bottom of the image.

tour of house in spanish

One of the main differences when compared to English adjectives is that Spanish adjectives will be placed after the noun we are describing , not before in most cases. For example, to describe a big house in Spanish, we could say “ Yo tengo una casa grande” (I have a big house) not “ Yo tengo una grande casa” . In this sentence, the word GRANDE is the main adjective describing the house in Spanish.

Key verbs to describe houses in Spanish

One of the simplest ways to describe things, particularly for describing a house in Spanish is by using  the verb SER (a form of “to be”) and the grammatical structures:

  • Subject + verb + adjective e.g. La casa es hermosa.
  • Pronoun + verb + noun + adjective e.g. Esta es una casa hermosa.

SER is an irregular verb , and it will be used as “ES” for a single object like CUARTO (room) and “SON” when referring to several objects like CUARTOS. This way, we can create simple sentences using “SER” along with adjectives such as:

  • “La casa es pequeña” (the house is small)
  • “La sala es cómoda” (the living room is comfortable)
  • “Las ventanas son viejas” (the windows are old)

Another way to describe the house in Spanish is with the verb LUCIR (to look). LUCIR will be conjugated as LUCE for a single object and LUCEN for several, as in the sentences:

  • “La casa luce pequeña” (the house looks small)
  • “Las habitaciones lucen espaciosas” (the rooms look spacious)

It is very common regular house description in Spanish, we will also find the verbs HAY and TENER to talk about the things in a room . Both verbs are useful for talking about things in a room. Pay attention to the examples in the following image.

Adjectives and verbs for describing houses in Spanish

Lastly, we will use the verb ESTAR along with prepositions of place to indicate the location of rooms or any object in the house.

Examples of House Descriptions in Spanish – Descripciones de casas

It is time to see how all these things work together in real descriptions. Pay attention to how the vocabulary for the house in Spanish, besides all the things we have discussed, can be used in meaningful sentences. Some of the sentences in these paragraphs will be using “Me gusta + an object” to say what someone likes and “No me gusta + an object” for the opposite.

Example No. 1: Describiendo mi casa

Yo tengo una casa pequeña. Hay cuatro cuartos, una sala, una cocina y cuatro baños. Los baños son pequeños. La sala es espaciosa. La sala tiene un televisor grande y muchos objetos más. La cocina luce pequeña pero en realidad es grande. La cocina está junto a la sala. Cada cuarto tiene baño y una ventana. Hay un pasillo pero es angosto. Me gustan la sala y la cocina de la casa.

Example No. 2: Casa en venta

Listening Activity: Talking about the house in Spanish

Key expressions in the conversation:.

  • “ ¿Qué le/te parece? ” means “What do you think about it?”

A Designer Brings Back Her 100-Year-Old Spanish Revival Home, Just in Time for the Hollywood Centennial

Interior Designer Elizabeth Law stays true to the home’s roots while infusing it with her own sense of style and life experiences.

In fact, Law has learned that this was only the third home built in “Hollywoodland” as it was called at the time.

“This home was part of the Hollywoodland development, which was advertised as ‘above the turmoil’ of the city, sort of a country-living locale complete with a barn, walking trails, and hidden stone staircases,” Law explains. One of the styles homeowners could choose was Spanish Revival, an aesthetic approach that this particular home continues to showcase to this day.

hollywood house tour elizabeth law

When Law first purchased the home, she saw the potential to bring it back to its 1920s heyday.

“As a designer, that era and style of house along with the restoration is my passion,” she says. “It is and was a work in progress.”

The updates that had been done in the home were completed in the 1980s and '90s, which is why Law has had to slowly “put the pieces back together,” as she describes it.

Law started with light fixtures and hardware and has focused mainly on the visuals. “The bones of the house have remained true, which was a huge part of the appeal while I was searching,” Law says, adding that she’s kept the original floors, windows, and arches, and even has the original blueprints hanging above her desk. She muses that in old homes like this, there seems to be the constant need to “replace” things, but she has opted to restore it instead.

hollywood house tour elizabeth law

The home has remained faithful to its Spanish Revival roots through its white, hand-troweled stucco and Mission Clay tile roof, entry tower, and French casement windows and doors as well as the awnings.

“The courtyard, while added much later, is very appropriate as well,” Law says.

Within the interior, the arches are classic to that time and style as well as the redwood support beams.

Step Inside This Hollywood Hills Home by Elizabeth Law

Law says that ever since she was a child, she’s been drawn to Mediterranean-style homes, even though she grew up on a farm in South Carolina.

“I was fortunate enough to have traveled as a child and was introduced at a young age to the beauty of tile, architecture, and the old world in general,” she says. “My parents have always been very adventurous and our homes have been full of collected and found things from around the world. I would say that my natural inclination is very in line with my home, and it shows.”

hollywood house tour elizabeth law

Shopping at Los Angeles stores like Obsolete and Galerie Half , along with Pasadena’s famous Rose Bowl flea market , Law has outfitted her home in pieces from the past, saying that the majority of her belongings are either vintage or antique.

“What I am the most excited about in this house are the light fixtures,” she says. “The first thing I bought for the house was the Art Deco fixture in the entry. The painted opalescent glass shades broke my heart and quickly found a place in my foyer. In the kitchen, there were a pair of chandeliers that wanted to be something they weren’t, so I found a pair of French 1930’s iron chandeliers that were the real deal. They have transformed the place completely.”

While still looking cool, classic, and modern, the home does have an air of timelessness, as if it’s now revived from its 1920s beginnings. You can almost see that “Hollywoodland” sign going up as you look out the window. And the parties here whisper of that glamorous time as well.

hollywood house tour elizabeth law

“My goal is to refresh and restore and let the house be its best original self,” Law says. “I know the previous owners were big entertainers, as am I. The house shines when its full of people, music on, all the windows and doors open, and the courtyard buzzing with conversation.”

How to Say “Can I Come to Your House” in Spanish: Formal and Informal Ways

Gaining the ability to communicate in multiple languages opens up exciting opportunities for cultural exchange. Whether you’re planning a trip to a Spanish-speaking country or simply want to connect with Spanish-speaking friends, learning how to say “Can I come to your house?” in Spanish can enhance your language skills and relationships. In this guide, we will explore formal and informal ways of conveying this question, with some useful tips and examples. Let’s dive in!

Table of Contents

Formal Ways to Say “Can I Come to Your House?”

When addressing someone you have a formal relationship with or showing respect to a more mature person, it is essential to use formal language. Here are some phrases to express your request politely:

“¿Podría ir a su casa?” “¿Sería posible que pudiera ir a su casa?” “¿Me permitiría ir a su casa?”

These phrases convey politeness and courtesy. Remember to use the correct conjugation of the verbs and adjust the possessive adjective according to the person you are addressing. For example, if you’re addressing someone using the pronoun “usted” (formal “you”), you would say “¿Podría ir a su casa?”

Informal Ways to Say “Can I Come to Your House?”

Conversations with friends, peers, or in casual settings call for a more relaxed tone. Here are some informal ways to ask if you can visit your friend’s house:

“¿Puedo ir a tu casa?” “¿Me dejas ir a tu casa?” “¿Se puede ir a tu casa?”

These phrases use the informal pronoun “tu” (informal “you”) and are commonly used among friends or people of similar age. Remember to adjust the verb conjugation and possessive adjective accordingly.

Tips for Proper Usage

When using these phrases, it’s crucial to consider the context and the relationship you have with the person you’re speaking to. Here are some additional tips to help you navigate this request smoothly:

  • Consider your relationship: Assess the level of formality or informality required based on the relationship you have with the person.
  • Be polite: Regardless of the formality, ensure your tone is respectful and friendly.
  • Use body language: Non-verbal cues such as a smile and open posture can enhance the positive meaning of your request.
  • Be aware of cultural differences: In some Spanish-speaking regions, it is customary to spend more time building rapport before directly asking to visit someone’s house.

To provide you with a better understanding, here are some contextual examples of using these phrases:

Example 1: Marco: Hola María, ¿podría ir a su casa para trabajar en el proyecto? María: ¡Claro, Marco! Estás invitado. Mi casa está abierta para ti.
Example 2: Lucía: Oye, ¿puedo ir a tu casa para estudiar juntos mañana? Pablo: ¡Por supuesto, Lucía! Mi casa es tu casa. Te espero.

Remember that using the appropriate greetings and pleasantries along with these phrases can make a significant difference in creating a warm and friendly atmosphere.

Now that you know how to say “Can I come to your house?” in both formal and informal ways, you can confidently connect with Spanish speakers on a deeper level. Take the opportunity to practice these phrases, immerse yourself in the language, and enjoy building meaningful connections. ¡Buena suerte!

For anyone designing their own home—and particularly for a professional interior designer—the process invariably presents an opportunity to reassess what inspires you, what you desire, and on some fundamental level, who you are. “I was more adventurous with color and pattern in past homes, but I wanted this place to be more subtle. Something a bit quieter and more sophisticated felt right for where I am in my life right now,” says Los Angeles AD PRO Directory designer Jeff Andrews , reflecting on the home he recently renovated for himself and his husband, Emmy-winning casting director Ken Miller. “Of course, I wanted it to be beautiful; but above all, it had to be livable and comfortable,” he adds.

The site for these ruminations is a classic 1930 Spanish-style house in LA’s Miracle Mile neighborhood. “This was the perfect spot,” Andrews declares. “Spanish architecture speaks to me in a way that a modern house or a Craftsman just doesn’t.” Indeed, the new residence neatly encapsulates Andrews’s respect for the original architecture as well his skill in seamlessly adapting and attuning a nearly century-old structure to the couple’s personal tastes as well as the rhythms and rituals of contemporary life. “The house was basically gutted, but we stuck with things that made sense. I didn’t want to interfere with the original architectural envelope, so I just tried to accentuate it and add a little more design drama,” Andrews explains of his ministrations. In the living room, for example, the designer restored the original beams and corbels but added new ceiling details to activate the overhead plane. He also replicated the stained-glass details of the unsalvageable window on the front façade but changed the colors to coordinate with his preferred palette. In the dining room, the original crown moldings are now complemented by a dynamic new ceiling with radiating bas-relief bands. “I think the ceiling takes the room to another level,” the designer offers.

For ease and efficiency, Andrews broke out the wall between the living room and what is now the media room, adding a seductive new bar of fluted Calacatta Viola marble to mediate between the two spaces. “We didn’t want useless rooms separated from the main flow of the house,” the designer notes. The interior appointments of the two rooms point to the overriding sensibility that animates the home—restrained, finely tailored, soft yet masculine. Here and throughout, Andrews paired furnishings of his own design with select pieces by some of his favorite contemporary makers, including Lindsey Adelman , Alison Berger, BDDW , and Apparatus . Artisanal flourishes—like the living room’s custom limestone fireplace inspired by Constantin Brancusi’s Gate of the Kiss in Romania—add an additional layer of depth and drama to the heady mix.

The most significant changes to the original architecture occur at the back of the two-story house. On the first level, Andrews completely reimagined and enlarged the kitchen, adding new cabinetry, counters of textured soapstone, and accents of teal tile from Heath Ceramics . “I hemmed and hawed over that kitchen more than any room in the house,” the designer recalls. “But the new kitchen inspires me to cook. We entertain now more than ever.” On the upper floor, a new primary bath—like the kitchen below—gives more room and prominence to a space that would have received far less consideration in the 1930s. A new oak-lined dressing room, which Andrews describes as “gentlemanly,” adds an elegant finishing note to the couple’s private domain. Completing the scene of domestic bliss is an entirely new backyard, an urban Eden conceived by Andrews in tandem with landscape designer Ana Saavedra, replete with a new pool, outdoor lounge, firepit, and a freestanding pavilion for a gym and studio capped with a traditional terra-cotta tiled roof.

As this is the first proper house Andrews has designed for himself and a partner, one naturally wonders how his husband factored into the design equation. On that subject, Miller remains sanguine: “Jeff ran everything by me. We debated, but we never fought,” the casting director insists. “And after all, Jeff’s taste is impeccable.”
