Rascals’ Cavaliere and Cornish Set ‘Time Peace’ Tour

time peace tour 2022

Founding members Eddie Briganti is not part of this tour. Dino Danelli died on Dec. 15, 2022, at age 78.

With songs like “Good Lovin’,” “Groovin’,” “A Beautiful Morning,” “I’ve Been Lonely Too Long,” “People Got To Be Free,” and “How Can I Be Sure,” The Rascals are considered the best “blue-eyed soul” group to come out of the 1960s. Lead singer and songwriter and organist Cavaliere and lead guitarist Cornish, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductees, Grammy Hall of Fame, Vocal Group Hall of Fame and Songwriter Hall of Fame members, returned to the stage in November 2022 for the first time since 2018.

Cavaliere , who turned 78 on Nov. 29, recently published an autobiography, Memoir Of A Rascal…From Pelham, NY to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame . Cornish, whose own autobiography, Good Lovin’: My Life as a Rascal , was published in 2020, is especially grateful to return to the stage. Cornish collapsed on Sept. 7, 2018, while on tour with Cavaliere. He received a pacemaker and is back performing.

“This gives us another chance to play together and do it for the fans,” said Cornish, who turns 79 on May 14.

10 Great Rock Driving Songs

Please come to Minneapolis. Please? We’d love to see the Rascals play live. (I saw them back in the sixties, down in Orlando, FL, and they were awesome.)

Paul

The Rascals really aren’t The Rascals without great dummer Dino Danelli.

122intheshade

Phoenix in November is just right. We have this cool venue with a revolving stage. The Celebrity Theater. Make it a golf weekend with Alice Cooper.

Jim

We had tickets for their Dream Tour for Baltimore when it got canceled. So glad they’re touring together again, but wish Dino was with them. Such a great litany of songs !

Da Mick

I’m in agreement with you all, and don’t understand why Dino does not participate, unless it’s age or medically related. I did see the “Once Upon A Dream” show, and it was incredible. It’s already been some years now, but Dino sounded pretty great then, and even Eddie rounded into tear-jerking form after coming out of decades of retirement. I’ll never understand why or how there was such a lack of interest in that show, to the point that many of their shows were canceled. For me, “Once Upon A Dream” was a dream come true. Hope they have success with this tour and see fit to expand it.

As with almost all things, being in a band, apparently even in your 70s, isn’t as simple or necessarily as easy as it might appear from the outside. After posing the question about why Dino doesn’t join Felix and Gene, I did some back research and read some pretty wide-ranging things from some of the members. While Felix talks of working with a Guru to subvert his own ego during the “Once Upon A Dream” tour, Dino flat out lets his scorn of Felix fly for his need to control everything along with his levels of self-entitlement that, evidently has not lessened over the decades. While it was never outrightly said, it was inferred that a grab of songwriting royalties by Felix had much to do with Eddie’s unwillingness to be involved further both back then and now. Whereas Dino was completely infuriated by many of Felix’s demands during “Dream,” including an uneven split of the touring proceeds among the original members. Apparently, for these reasons “Dream” was discontinued, and it is unlikely we’ll see Dino or Eddie touring with Felix again. I guess, after many attempts at staging acts with a couple of The Rascals over the years, Gene has found his peace with whatever Felix requires for them to tour together. Having seen both Felix’s “Rascals,” and the original band in “Dream,” there’s just no comparison — not even close. It’s a tragic shame that these kinds of conflicts continue to compromise something so incredible into something that’s such a pale, watered-down shadow of what had been, and could still be, great. But in reaching those later ages myself, I’ve been surprised to discover that people, and in particular musicians, don’t really change that much, as foolish as the things that often divide them may be.

Junior

Interesting as it’s never been clear to me what the cause of the break up was back in 1970 but obviously Eddie had issues. It was Dino who stayed with Felix in the early 70’s during their Columbia years. Didn’t know the “Once Upon the Dream” stuff, thanks for the research and info!

It was implied, not inferred. The speaker implies. The recipient (listener) infers. No charge, TW

Where’s Eddie Brigati? He’s 1/4 of the Rascals too.

Well, obviously life has changed the hopes of many for this situation from even August of 22, and, tragically, our dear Dino is no longer with us. On the positive side, I’d seen Felix a few times before the reformed band did the “Dream” tour, and he always seemed to be trying to make it work with a scant number of musicians, which really didn’t work for the Rascals’ music. I’m so thrilled that if “Dream” accomplished anything, it gave Felix the perspective that if he was going to continue going out and doing the Rascals’ music, he needed to have a band that could do it thrilling justice, as the “Dream” orchestra indeed did. I so look forward to seeing him again now. As for Gene, I’m thrilled that he’s recuperated from his frightening heart episode, but quite honestly, without his dancing moves while playing guitar, I just don’t know what he brings to these shows sitting in a chair. Maybe it was time for him to retire after his hospitalization. But you have to love the guy’s spirit and desire to still be performing. Speaking of spirit, Felix sounds great in this video; his voice still has that soul. After all the things I read about Felix that I wrote in earlier posts above, I’m amazed that he is essentially carrying Gene in these shows. That shows a lot of love and unselfishness, and I congratulate him as it’s more than just his voice that has soul. Now, if only Eddie could find it in his heart to come back. He seemed to love doing the “Dream” show.

Lyn

Wish Eddie was with the 3023 tour! Loved seeing him in Dream! I saw the play two nights in Philly! They were FABULOUS! Felix, bring Eddie back! You need him!

The Rascals Featuring Felix Cavaliere & Gene Cornish: Time Peace Tour

Two legendary founders of The Rascals are together again. Felix Cavaliere and Gene Cornish cite the fans and love of their timeless songs as reasons for collaboration. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductees, Grammy Hall of Fame, Vocal Group Hall of Fame and Songwriter Hall of Fame members, The Rascals are widely considered the best ‘blue-eyed soul’ group to come out of the 1960s and their music is the soundtrack of a generation. The Rascals have 17 Top 20 hits, seven Top 10 hits, and three No.1 hits that include “Groovin’, “People Got To Be Free” and “Good Lovin’.”

The next chapter of The Rascals is about to begin – two of the founders of the legendary rock ‘n’ roll band are once again taking to the stage to continue their legacy that started 57 years ago.

With No. 1 songs like “Good Lovin’”, “Groovin’”, “A Beautiful Morning”, “I’ve Been Lonely Too Long”, “People Got To Be Free” and “How Can I Be Sure”, The Rascals are considered the best ‘blue-eyed soul’ group to come out of the 1960s. Lead singer/songwriter and organist Felix Cavaliere and lead guitarist Gene Cornish, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductees, Grammy Hall of Fame, Vocal Group Hall of Fame and Songwriter Hall of Fame members, hit the stage this November for the first time since 2018. With time comes peace of mind knowing that their collection of songs endure,

“We’re so grateful for the fans, this is for them,” Cavaliere, whose autobiography “Memoir Of A Rascal…From Pelham, NY to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame” recently came out, said.

Cornish, whose own autobiography “Good Lovin’: My Life as a Rascal” came out in 2020, is especially grateful to return to the stage. While on tour with Cavaliere in 2018, Cornish collapsed while performing the opening sequence to “A Beautiful Morning”. Cornish received a pacemaker and is ready to perform.

“This gives us another chance to play together and do it for the fans,” Cornish said.

The tour takes The Rascals to familiar markets, many of which they played during their meteoric rise in 1965. Starting out as The Young Rascals they caught the attention of promoter/manager Sid Bernstein with their high-energy set at Long Island’s elite club, Barge. Signed to Atlantic Records, and now called The Rascals, they would become a mainstay on The Ed Sullivan Show and sell over 30 million records.

"Still Hip, Still Great, Still Amazing!" The Rascals’ Time Peace Tour LIVE! at MPAC

"Still Hip, Still Great, Still Amazing!" The Rascals’ Time Peace Tour LIVE! at MPAC

Inside Morristown, NJ’s MPAC auditorium this Wednesday, November 16, 2022 evening, the crowd is just moments away from “Groovin’” to a Time Peace Tour concert performance by The Rascals featuring Felix Cavaliere and Gene Cornish.

Under a large screen proclaiming “Time Peace Tour,” keyboardist Benny Harrison, bassist Jimmy Keneally, drummer Vinny Santora, guitarist Mike Severs, and a three-piece horn section take the stage along with original Rascals’ guitarist Gene Cornish. Founding member Felix Cavaliere enters clapping his hands as he struts back and forth on the stage greeting concertgoers before taking his place center stage at the organ.

Opening with “Do You Feel It?” Cavaliere and The Rascals sing to the crowd, “Do you feel it? (You know I do)/Do you feel, baby, do you feel it? (You know I do).”

Audience members’ toes tap as Cavaliere’s organ calls, horns answer, and guitars, keyboard, bass, and drums keep the rhythm flowing.

Cavaliere sings to the audience, “Do you remember?” as he plays the organ intro to The Rascals’ 1967 chart-topper, “Groovin’.” Right from the start, music lovers happily sing along on the song’s well-known “Groovin’ on a Sunday afternoon” lyric and Gene Cornish’s harmonica adds to the tune’s relaxed vibe.

Mike Severs plays a twangy and sweet guitar solo before Cavaliere and the band segue into soulful cover versions of The Temptations’ “My Girl” and “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)” before smoothly segueing back into “Groovin’.”

The crowd cheers and Cavaliere jokes, “Hey Gene, remember when we started 150 years ago at the Choo Choo Club in Garfield, NJ? The club owner told us, ‘Make ’em dance, and if they drink up, you come back!’ so we wrote some songs to do that.” Cornish nods as the group launches into the rocker, “Come On Up,” which features Cornish and Mike Severs strumming electric guitars together.

After asking, “How many of you remember the Summer of Love?” Cavaliere and friends performs The Rascals’ 1967 hit, “A Girl Like You.” Crying, “Must be you that caused this feeling in me/You that fills me confidently/You that brings out the best in me,” Cavaliere shines on this arrangement which features trombone, sax, and trumpet solos to flashing lights. Cornish smiles as he plays guitar, obviously enjoying The Rascals’ patented blue-eyed soul vibe.

The excitement continues on “Love is a Beautiful Thing” as Cavaliere and keyboardist Benny Harrison duet on lead vocals and bring cheers from the crowd.

In reminiscing about The Rascals, Cavaliere recalls, “I remember when you could write a song and it didn’t piss people off. We wrote songs about the things people were thinking about.” Here, he and The Rascals launch into “A Ray of Hope” where a funky groove and horns punctuate this upbeat anthem which proclaims, “We’ll pray for a day when all men are free/And people can live like they’re meant to be.”

Cornish announces, “Great song written by Felix Cavaliere! Let’s hear it for him!” The crowd cheers, and Cavaliere tells the story about how The Rascals’ next song was written on the island of Oahu. After telling audience members to “Close your eyes and see if you can feel that beautiful island,” Cavaliere and Co. launch into a masterful rendition of The Rascals’ 1968 Top 5 hit, “It’s a Beautiful Morning.”

Cavaliere’s voice sounds strong and melodious as visual images appear on the screen behind him. While he ad libs vocally over the horns and swirling keyboards, tight rhythm section playing rounds out the sound and captivates the audience on this classic tune.

Following the deep cut, “What is the Reason?” Cornish reveals, “This is the first record we ever recorded.” Drummer Vinny Santora’s voice is featured on The Rascals’ 1965 hit, “I Ain’t Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore.” Mike Severs plays a psychedelic guitar solo as stage lights flash in time to the music. With bass thumping and guitar tremolo swirling, audience members move to the groove in their seats.

When Cavaliere asks, “How many of you remember 45s?” a fan in the front of the auditorium holds up a 45 rpm record for everyone to see. Continuing, “The ‘B’ side sold as many copies as the ‘A’ side,” Cavaliere recalls, “One time, this guy came up to me and gave me a kiss saying, ‘You changed my life! You put my song on the other side of ‘Groovin’.” Here, he and The Rascals perform a soulful version of “Mustang Sally,” a number which became a hit for Wilson Pickett.

The audience sings “Ride, Sally, ride” in response to Cavaliere’s energetic vocal and then sings along as Cavaliere works in snippets of Wild Cherry’s “Play That Funky Music,” Wilson Pickett’s “Land of 1000 Dances,” and The Temptations’ “Get Ready” and “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” before deftly segueing back into “Mustang Sally.”

Music lovers cheer and Cavaliere exclaims, “I want to tell you, you’re alright out there!” The party continues with The Rascals’ 1967 Top 20 hit, “I’ve Been Lonely Too Long,” the sound building in intensity as Cavaliere soulfully wails and plays the keys before incorporating a segment of The Temptations’ “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” into the musical arrangement.

Ending in a flurry of notes to a cheering crowd, Cavaliere asks, “You feeling good out there?” before inviting bassist Jimmy Keneally to sing lead on The Young Rascals’ 1967 Top 5 hit, “How Can I Be Sure.” Following his performance, Keneally says, “Another great Felix Cavaliere composition,” to which Cavaliere replies, “Don’t forget, Eddie! Eddie wrote it too!” referring to Rascals’ founding member, singer, and songwriter Eddie Brigati.

As shapes swirl on the screen behind him to ever-changing colored lights, Cavaliere handles the lead vocal on “It’s Wonderful” while Cornish happily accompanies him on guitar.

Vinny Santora plays a marching beat on his drums as Cavaliere says, “For many years I’ve been singing this song. This is a prayer for our brothers and sisters overseas.” Fireworks appear on the screen behind Cavaliere as he and the band launch into The Rascals’ 1968 #1 hit, “People Got to Be Free.” Music lovers join in singing the song’s “All the world over, so easy to see/People everywhere just wanna be free” lyric and Cornish and Severs play guitar counterpoint to the horns on this song of hope.

With the band still rockin’ beneath him, Cavaliere riffs, “There’s a train coming — it’s the love train. Think about it! Peace. Love. Wouldn’t that be nice?” before segueing into The Edwin Hawkins Singers’ “Oh Happy Day” and Martha Reeves and the Vandellas’ “Nowhere to Run.”

"Still Hip, Still Great, Still Amazing!" The Rascals’ Time Peace Tour LIVE! at MPAC

Ending with Cavaliere singing the single word, “Freedom,” lights flash and the audience reacts with enthusiastic cheers and applause.

Cavaliere exclaims, “I hope you had a good time tonight! Thank you!” and Cornish echoes his statement by singing a refrain of Sly and the Family Stone’s “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Again).” Cavaliere announces, “This is your last chance tonight if you feel like joining in,” and the crowd stands up to dance to a roof-rockin’ version of The Young Rascals’ 1966 #1 hit, “Good Lovin’.” Music lovers sing along to the song’s “Good lovin’” refrain and the horns call in three-part harmony joining the cacophony of sound emanating from the stage as people rise to hoot, holler, cheer, and applaud.

"Still Hip, Still Great, Still Amazing!" The Rascals’ Time Peace Tour LIVE! at MPAC

Cavaliere exclaims, “We have a special request from Gene — he wants to do one more!” Here, the group enters into a medley of hits which starts off with Wilson Pickett’s “In the Midnight Hour” and continues with Chuck Berry’s “Roll Over Beethoven.” Culminating with a driving rendition of Little Richard’s “Long Tall Sally,” Cavaliere and The Rascals have the entire crowd on its feet singing the song’s “Gonna have some fun tonight” refrain as guitars wail and music lovers dance.

Cavaliere and Cornish shake hands and Cavaliere tells the audience, “Thank you, New Jersey. God bless all of you and God bless America!”

As concertgoers make their way out of the MPAC auditorium, we chat with several music lovers who share their thoughts on tonight’s Rascals’ concert. Whereas Artie from Edison calls The Rascals’ performance “Entertaining and enjoyable,” Judy from Ramsey exclaims, “It was great! I knew every song,” and Ken from Springfield reveals, “The Rascals were the first band I saw in the ’60s, and they are still excellent. I’m so glad I came tonight; I enjoyed this show immensely!”

Christine from Springfield declares, “The Rascals were wonderful — it was well worth coming tonight!” and Chris from Manville asserts, “Felix Cavaliere’s organ playing still gives me the shivers! His voice is great, too — I love the way he stays true to the original song but then strays from the melody and ad libs — he’s fantastic!”

"Still Hip, Still Great, Still Amazing!" The Rascals’ Time Peace Tour LIVE! at MPAC

Frank from Garfield recalls, “I’ve been a fan of The Rascals from the beginning,” joking, “I never saw them perform back in the clubs because I was only 13 years old and couldn’t get in, but when the door would open, I would peek in and tell all my friends, ‘I saw Felix’s leg!’” Noting, “They’re a fantastic band and they wrote beautiful songs,” Frank acknowledges, “I’m happy that as an adult I get to see them in concert all the time now!”

Mike from Wanaque tells us, “This is my third time seeing The Rascals and Felix Cavaliere is always great! It’s a fun show, and always worth it,” before confessing, “I grew up in Garfield, NJ. In fact, it was my cousin, Sal, who owned the Choo Choo Club that Felix was talking about during the show.”

Margie from Wanaque acknowledges, “I grew up in Garfield, too,” adding, “Hearing all those great songs had me remembering so many good times. The Rascals are just a fantastic band — I love their sound and their soul,” before concluding, “To me, they’re still hip, still great, still amazing!”

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to discuss how NATO members have bolstered their spending, the latest on the war in Ukraine and how the alliance can counter aggression from countries like Russia and China.

 • Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán visited Kyiv on Tuesday for talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
 • This marked Orbán's first visit since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was in Kyiv on Tuesday for talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy , his first visit to the country since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Orbán’s press chief confirmed to Hungarian news agency MTI that the prime minister had arrived in the Ukrainian capital in the morning for the talks. Bertalan Havasi said the main topic of the meeting will be the opportunity for building peace as Ukraine fights off Russia’s invasion.

Officials in Kyiv did not confirm Orbán's arrival.

HUNGARY LAUNCHES EU PRESIDENCY WITH TRUMP-LIKE CALL TO 'MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN'

Orbán's visit was a rare gesture in a relationship that long been marred by tensions. Known as Russian President Vladimir Putin’s closest EU ally, Orbán has routinely blocked, delayed or watered down EU efforts to extend assistance to Ukraine and to sanction Moscow over its war, frustrating both Zelenskyy other EU leaders.

He has also accused Kyiv of mistreating an ethnic Hungarian minority in Ukraine’s western region of Zakarpattia, a community he has used to justify his refusal to provide weapons to Ukraine or allow their transfer across the two countries' shared border.

The self-described "illiberal" leader has long been accused by his European partners of dismantling democratic institutions at home and acting as an obstinate spoiler of key EU policy priorities. The bloc has frozen more than $20 billion in funding to Budapest over alleged rule-of-law and corruption violations, and Orbán has conducted numerous anti-EU campaigns depicting it as an overcentralized, repressive organization.

This visit comes the day after Hungary took over the six-month rotating presidency of the European Union, a position that has little real power but can be used to set the tone of the bloc's agenda. Hungarian officials have indicated that they will act as "honest brokers" in the role, despite worries from some EU lawmakers that Hungary's democratic track record makes it unfit to lead the bloc.

Orbán's visit also comes as he seeks to recruit members into a new nationalist alliance that he hopes will soon become the largest right-wing group in the European Parliament. On Sunday, Orbán met in Vienna with the leaders of Austria’s far-right Freedom Party and the main Czech opposition party, announcing the formation of the new group, "Patriots for Europe."

The trio would need to attract lawmakers from at least four more EU countries to successfully form a group in Europe's new parliament, which held elections in June. Right-wing nationalist parties across Europe strengthened their position in the elections, but ideological differences over the war in Ukraine and cooperation with Russia have often prevented deeper alliances among some of the parties.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) —

During his first visit to neighboring Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán told President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday that the war was Europe’s “most important issue,” and recommended an immediate ceasefire.

Orban is widely seen as having the warmest relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin among European Union leaders , and his visit was a rare gesture in a tumultuous relationship with Ukraine as Budapest has repeatedly leaned toward Moscow.

Image

The Hungarian prime minister has routinely blocked, delayed or watered down EU efforts to extend assistance to Ukraine and to sanction Moscow over its war, frustrating both Zelenskyy and other EU leaders.

But following talks in Kyiv on Tuesday, Orbán appeared to open the door to a new phase of bilateral relations, saying “the time had come” for such an official visit.

“We are trying to leave the disputes of the past behind us and focus on the period ahead,” Orbán said in brief comments to journalists following the talks. “We would like relations between our two countries to be much better.”

Ukraine and Hungary have had a tense relationship since the war began, with Orbán portraying himself as a champion for peace and calling for an immediate cease-fire and peace talks without expanding on what that would mean for Ukraine’s territorial integrity. He reiterated that call Tuesday, saying it would “provide an opportunity to speed up peace negotiations.”

But Zelenskyy on Tuesday said he was “grateful” for the humanitarian support Hungary had provided to Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war. He also said Hungary could play a role in organizing a second iteration of a peace summit that was held in Switzerland last month, which brought together dozens of world leaders.

“Today, we discussed in detail how Hungary can show further leadership in preparing the second summit,” Zelenskyy said, adding that he would like for the event to take place this year.

Orbán’s visit comes the day after Hungary took over the six-month rotating presidency of the EU, a position that has little real power but can be used to set the tone of the bloc’s agenda. Hungarian officials have indicated that they will act as “honest brokers” in the role despite worries from some EU lawmakers that Hungary’s democratic track record makes it unfit to lead the bloc.

During the visit, the Hungarian prime minister acknowledged Russia’s invasion, and said his aim in traveling to Kyiv was “to understand how we could be helpful to Ukraine in the forthcoming six months.”

“The issue of peace is not only important for Ukraine, it is important for the whole of Europe,” Orbán said. “This war, which you are now suffering, has a profound effect on European security.”

The war is “the most important issue for Europe,” he said.

The Hungarian premier, a self-described adherent of “illiberal democracy,” has long been accused by his European partners of dismantling democratic institutions at home and acting as an obstinate spoiler of key EU policy priorities. The bloc has frozen more than $20 billion in funding to Budapest over alleged rule-of-law and corruption violations, and Orbán has conducted numerous anti-EU campaigns depicting it as an overcentralized, repressive organization.

Orbán has also long accused Kyiv of mistreating an ethnic Hungarian minority in Ukraine’s western region of Zakarpattia, a community he has used to justify his refusal to provide weapons to Ukraine or allow their transfer across the two countries’ shared border.

But on Tuesday, Orbán said he sees a “good chance” of achieving progress in the minority community’s affairs, and agreed to a proposal by Zelenskyy to set up a Ukrainian school in Hungary for refugees.

“These families need to be taken care of. They need jobs, they need a livelihood, they need security, they need a good school for their children, they need good teachers,” Orbán said.

His visit comes as he seeks to recruit members into a new nationalist alliance that he hopes will soon become the largest right-wing group in the European Parliament. On Sunday, Orbán met in Vienna with the leaders of Austria’s far-right Freedom Party and the main Czech opposition party, announcing the formation of the new group, “Patriots for Europe.”

The trio would need to attract lawmakers from at least four more EU countries to successfully form a group in Europe’s new parliament, which held elections in June. Right-wing nationalist parties across Europe strengthened their position in the elections, but ideological differences over the war in Ukraine and cooperation with Russia have often prevented deeper alliances among some of the parties.

2024 Travelers Championship live stream, TV schedule, channel, where to watch, tee times, radio, golf coverage

A busy three-week stretch in professional golf comes to an end this week in connecticut.

travelers-championship-signage-g.jpg

The 2024 Travelers Championship appears to be heading to an exciting finish. Taking to TPC River Highlands once again, Sunday's final round has moved into a playoff as world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Tom Kim battle for the trophy and a massive prize money payout .

Failing to card a single under-par round in a tournament for the first time in his professional career, Scheffler looks to get back on the wagon and capture his sixth victory of the season. A win at TPC River Highlands would be his first at a course which saw Xander Schauffele reign supreme in 2022.

The world No. 2 continues to display his consistency on a weekly basis and has now notched four straight top 10s dating back to the Wells Fargo Championship. With plenty of form in tow, Schaffuele seeks his second win of the season and second trophy at the Travelers Championship.

Dave Matthews Band create a spiritual experience in first of two Ruoff Music Center shows

time peace tour 2022

As a self-proclaimed pop-culture junkie and fan of what I think is a pretty diverse range of music, I’m ashamed to admit how little familiarity I have with jam bands.

I’m not sure I can name a single song by The Grateful Dead , I have only some idea of what Phish might sound like, and going into Friday night’s show at Ruoff Music Center, I knew exactly one song by Dave Matthews Band .

I’m not sipping Haterade and telling you I’m too good for this kind of music. It’s a genuine cultural blind spot. It’s OK — I’m disappointed in me, too.

But, in talking to the people in my life who love Dave Matthews Band, it became quickly clear to me that I should be thankful to be experiencing my first of his shows on the first night of Creekend — his annual stop at the Noblesville amphitheater formerly known as Deer Creek .

August Indianapolis concerts: Phish will return to Ruoff Music Center for a 3-show summer weekend. How to get tickets

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

And it was a sight to behold. They played for three hours straight, jamming through 20-plus songs and communing with the crowd in a way I've yet to see at a concert this year.

As a Creekend first-timer, it was definitely an unforgettable experience. Here are five things that defined my first Dave Matthews Band concert.

The crowd at Ruoff Music Center reminded me why live music is a spiritual experience

Yes, Matthews and his band were great, and I'll get to that in a minute, but Friday night's show was, for me, about the fans. In looking around me in the pavilion and out across the lawn, it's hard to believe this show wasn't billed as a sellout.

The band hit the stage around 7:45 p.m. and were greeted by waves of applause and cascading cheers that lasted several minutes. As the opening song — 2002's "Grey Street" — started, the woman next to me turned and pointed to her arm: "I got goosebumps!"

There's a moment near the end of that song in which Matthews lets out a guttural "yeah," and the crowd went there with him, the first example of the evening's exuberance.

Live music, no matter the genre or venue, is a beautiful convener of people from all walks of life. People who may not have much in common outside the walls of a performance space, but for a few hours they can come together over their shared love of art. Artists and their fans create a sacred space for each other, interrupting all the outside noise and negativity to share in something that can be extremely cathartic, joyful, rejuvenating. In those moments, nothing matters except the music.

By the end of the first song, I had goosebumps, too.

Jam bands can make you lose track of space and time

Captain Obvious reporting for duty. But please be patient, it's my first time.

And by the end of the third song, "The Idea of You," felt like your average three- to four-minute song, compared to the two songs that spanned the previous 25 or so minutes, but as it wrapped, I found myself thinking, "Wait... that's it?!"

The fans love Dave Matthews — and they love Deer Creek Music Center

Despite my general lack of familiarity with his music, I respect the hell out of any artist who earns the kind of following that Dave has throughout the years.

I’ve been lurking in a DMB Facebook group with thousands of fans excited for Creekend 2024 over the last few weeks, and it’s been delightful to watch the community that’s developed around him. The creativity exhibited in their fan-made merch, the kindness they show when sharing tips and trips for navigating the area of finding lodging, the camaraderie forged among once-strangers.

Retro Indy: Deer Creek Music Center, now Ruoff, turns 35. See its first lineup (and those ticket prices!)

Not only that, but it seemed that every person around me had an encyclopedic knowledge of the Dave Matthews Band catalog. There were hardly any special effects or staging — just the band and their instruments — and the transition from one song to the next can sometimes result in an awkward pause as the musicians reset. And for a band like this, known for ever-changing setlists and new approaches to old standards, those transition times can create quite a bit of anticipation. Any gaps that existed were filled by the general buzz of the crowd. Fans were either decompressing from the jam they just heard, or trying to guess what was coming next based on a familiar stray note that might be part of a specific guitar lick. These people have PhDs in Creekend calculus.

The musicianship is stellar

Three decades since their major label debut, "Under the Table and Dreaming," I'm not sure how much rehearsal time these guys take for a tour, nor am I positive it would do them any good — they like to change things up, and it's clear the fans love it, too.

These guys are clearly so in tune with one another, and I'm not just talking about their instruments. I mean emotionally, spiritually, mentally. They're also great performers and they know how to create music that moves together and moves people. From the keys and guitars to the drums, trumpet and saxophone (and flute!), it was all top-tier.

Want more? Here are all the acts coming to Ruoff Music Center this summer

I am tired on Dave Matthews' behalf

What he's doing is not easy.

Three hours of singing, yelling, some light wiggling and a single jump may not sound like much, but bear in mind it was 88 degrees outside and quite humid when he took the stage. And he's doing that twice in Indianapolis and has been all over the Midwest with it in the last few weeks. The quality of his voice is fantastic for someone who's pushing his vocal instrument as hard as he is nearly nightly. But for as physically exhausted as I'm sure he was, Matthews' stage presence is delightful. He's a charismatic performer who clearly loves what he's doing.

There was one thing that surprised me, and I mean this more as a neutral comment than a criticism of his stage presence: For as much of a relationship as the fans seem to have with Matthews as a frontman and as an artist, he spent very little time talking to the audience. Apart from saying hello to the crowd and thanking everyone for coming, the first time he said anything substantive to the audience was about an hour and a half into the set, introducing "Black and Blue Bird." While there was plenty of interaction between Matthews and his audience when it came to singing together Friday evening, I'm not sure I've ever been to a concert with as little onstage chatter as Friday night's show.

His ecstatic dancing when he shed his guitar for a rousing cover of Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" made up for it, in my humble opinion.

The rock powerhouses are teaming for a 23-city tour that will kick off July 6, 2024, at Busch Stadium in St. Louis and wrap Sept. 8 at Coors Field in Denver.

While the bands have a stockpile of smashes including “Any Way You Want It,” “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Photograph” and “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” respectively, they’ll also be joined by fellow hitmakers Steve Miller Band , Heart and Cheap Trick in varying markets (see list below).

When do tickets for Def Leppard, Journey go on sale?

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

Basil, etc.

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.

Ukraine war latest: Putin to hold talks with Xi Jinping and Erdogan tomorrow - report

Vladimir Putin will hold meetings with Xi Jinping and Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Kazakhstan, Russian state news agency reports. Meanwhile, Hungary's prime minister is in Kyiv for the first time since Russia's invasion. Listen to a Daily podcast on Kim and Putin as you scroll.

US defence secretary Lloyd Austin has said Washington will soon announce an additional £1.8bn in security assistance for Ukraine.

The package will include anti-tank weapons, interceptors and munitions for Patriot and other air defence systems.

It marks a strong response to pleas from Kyiv for help in battling Russian forces in the eastern Donetsk region.

On Sunday, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russia had dropped more than 800 powerful glide bombs in Ukraine in the last week alone.

He urged national leaders to relax restrictions on the use of Western weapons to strike military targets inside Russia, adding that Ukraine needed the "necessary means to destroy the carriers of these bombs, including Russian combat aircraft, wherever they are".

Vladimir Putin will hold meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan tomorrow during a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Kazakhstan's capital Astana, Russian state news agency TASS reports.

Mr Putin last met Mr Xi in May when he visited China on his first foreign trip after being inaugurated for a fifth term as Russian president.

The SCO is a Eurasian political, economic, international security and defence organisation established by China and Russia in 2001.

The other full members are India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Turkey, though not a member, often takes part in its meetings as a "dialogue partner".

Ukraine is expected to get "good news" in its quest for more air defence systems at a NATO summit in Washington next week, a senior US state department official has said.

The official told Reuters: "We hope we'll be able to get to the summit and make some new announcements on air defence.

"You've heard that the Ukrainians are keen to secure additional Patriots or similar systems. And I think we'll have some additional good news for them on that front."

The official did not provide any further details.

For context : Ukrainian officials have been urging their allies for months to supply more air defence systems to defend against frequent missile and drone attacks from Russian forces.

The upcoming NATO summit in Washington, which will be held from 9-11 July, is intended in part to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the military alliance.

Four settlements in the Russian region of Belgorod have been attacked by Ukrainian drones, the region's governor has said.

Vyacheslav Gladkov, reporting the news on his Telegram channel , said there were no civilian casualties according to preliminary data.

"In the Graivoron urban district, in the city of Graivoron, as a result of a drone crash with subsequent detonation, a parked passenger car caught fire," he wrote.

"Fire crews quickly extinguished the source of the fire. In the village of Bezymeno, five private houses were destroyed after several attacks."

Ukraine carried out a "destructive strike" on a Russian ammunition depot in Crimea yesterday, according to the country's air force commander.

It comes following Russia's claims that they managed to destroy five Ukrainian SU-27 fighter jets today on an airfield in the Poltava region.

Ukraine's air force commander, Mykola Oleshchuk, said on Telegram : "Once again, Ukrainian aircraft 'destroyed' by enemy propaganda continue to successfully perform combat missions."

Mr Oleshchuk did not specify the exact location of the ammunition depot targeted, but posted a video from a local Ukraine-linked Telegram channel allegedly showing the strike on Balaklava, near Sevastopol.

The video's authenticity has not been independently verified by Sky News.

The Kremlin has said that an upcoming visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Moscow was "very important".

The final details of the visit are being worked out, though Mr Modi, who recently won a third term in office, is expected to visit between 8-9 July.

Regional and global security are likely to be on the agenda for discussions, as will the trade partnership between the two countries.

India is the world's third-largest crude consumer and a major buyer of Russian oil, increasing its purchase more than 20 times compared with 2021 as Russia discounts its barrels amid Western energy restrictions.

"I can only confirm once again that the visit is in the final stage of preparation," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

"A very important visit."

Mr Peskov added that both Mr Modi and Vladimir Putin had a "very trusting" relationship and said that regional security and global security issues were always high on the agenda of such meetings.

"In addition, our trade and economic cooperation is also one of the main issues that is being discussed, the most diverse areas of cooperation that we intend to develop, for which there is mutual political will," he said.

Russia can't comment on Donald Trump's idea of ending the conflict in Ukraine as it has not seen any proposals, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.

The former president said last week that if he won the upcoming US election, he would have the war settled before he took office in January 2025.

"This is not Trump's first statement on this, and he has made statements along these lines before," Mr Peskov said.

"Without knowing the essence of what this is about, we cannot comment on it."

During last week's debate with US President Joe Biden, Trump claimed that if he won the upcoming election he would have the war settled before he took office.

"As far as Russia and Ukraine, if we had a real president, a president... that was respected by Putin... he would have never invaded Ukraine," Trump said.

Mr Biden responded: "Go ahead, let Putin go in and control Ukraine, and then move on to Poland and other places. See what happens then. He has no idea what the hell he's talking about."

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has told Volodymyr Zelenskyy that a ceasefire in Ukraine could help speed up peace negotiations with Russia.

The Hungarian PM - who is one of the most supportive European leaders of Vladimir Putin's regime in Russia - is in Kyiv today for talks with Mr Zelenskyy.

At a joint media briefing, Mr Orban suggested to Ukraine's president that a quick ceasefire in Ukraine could accelerate peace talks with Russia.

Mr Orban also said that Hungary would like to have much better bilateral relations with Ukraine and his country was ready to take part in the modernisation of Ukraine's economy.

He said that Hungary would be at Ukraine's disposal in its current role as rotating president of the EU Council, stressing that peace was important for all of Europe.

For context: Vladimir Putin set out what he said were Russia's preconditions for starting peace talks with Ukraine last month.

He said Russia would be ready for such talks "tomorrow" if Ukrainian troops withdraw from the Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Donetsk and Luhansk regions and if Ukraine gave up its plans to join NATO.

If Ukraine agreed to those conditions, he said Russia would cease fire and start negotiations.

Mr Zelenskyy dismissed the ceasefire offer as "nothing new" and likened it to Adolf Hitler's promises before the Second World War.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has been welcomed in Kyiv by Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Mr Orban is visiting Ukraine for the first time since the full-scale invasion of Russia began in February 2022.

The main topic of the meeting will be the opportunity for building peace as Ukraine fights off Russia's invasion, according to Mr Orban's press chief.

Hungary is among the most supportive European nations of Vladimir Putin's regime in Russia.

Mr Orban has consistently opposed sanctions and frustrated the European Union and NATO over aid for Ukraine and the accession of the country and other neighbours to the alliance.

Read more on Mr Orban's visit to Ukraine in our 10.12am post.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has congratulated outgoing Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte on his appointment as secretary general of NATO.

Speaking to the former Dutch leader in a call on Tuesday, Mr Zelenskyy also thanked Mr Rutte for his support of Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion.

In a post on Telegram, Mr Zelenskyy said: "I sincerely thanked him for everything that he personally, his government and the people of the Netherlands have done for Ukraine.

"All timely and large-scale defence, humanitarian and political support. We will continue to stay in touch with the new secretary general of NATO."
