You’ll find charming Eidfjord, in the midst of lush nature In an arm of the impressive Hardangerfjord. This is a place to experience culture and nature, fjords and mountains in one spectacular setting. You can move from the fjord to the mountain in no-time.

Those who come here come with a plan to explore the fjord landscapes of the Vestlandet region. You can do so in multiple ways; memorable mountain hikes, fjord cruises on the Hardangerfjord, go on a RIB boat adventure, or go slow-fjord traveling in a kayak. Furthermore, the Bjoreio river offers up very good rafting conditions, suitable for the whole family.  

The Vøringsfossen Waterfall  

Make sure you don’t leave Eidfjord without a visit to the Vøringfossen waterfall, one of the grandest attractions in the Hardanger region! The 182 meters tall waterfall brings water from the Hardangervidda mountain to the valley of Måbødalen and creates magic, cinematic atmosphere. A new pedestrian bridge over the waterfall was constructed in 2020. The project might not have been welcomed by all, but there’s no controversy in saying that the experience of walking over the waterfall is something special!  

Culture & Nature in Eidfjord  

If you are up for a trip into higher ground, a visit to the historic Kjeåsen farm, situated 600 meters over the Simdalsfjord is highly recommended. If you feel like a physical challenge, hiking up the steep mountainside to the farm will get your blood pumping! While at the Kjeåsen you can imagine how life played out at a local farm, 100+ years ago while enjoying the awe-inspiring views.  

Eidfjord also houses the Sima power-plant, one of Europe’s largest hydropower-plants. 

With such a central location close to Bergen, the Hardangervidda mountain range, the city of Voss etc., Eidfjord is beautifully placed as a holiday destination: «beach holiday» in the summer, skiing in the mountains during winter and nature and cultural experiences all year round.

What you'll do

Our guide will meet you at the port of  Eidfjord .

We will leave Eidfjord, a charming village next to the fjord, built on the sand and black gravel of the last ice age around 8000 years ago.

Following the  Eid River , known for trout and salmon fishing, we will make a stop on the other side of Lake Eidfjord to visit the nature center " Nature Hardangervidda ", a modern museum to discover the Norwegian nature, the environment and the climate through exhibitions and interactive activities, technological and visual effects adapted to all. There is also a panoramic film in which one can fly over fjords, mountains and waterfalls, a wonderful virtual experience above high mountains, deep fjords with steep gorges and on mountain lakes and glaciers. This place is also the official center of the Hardangervidda National Park.

Continuation through the  Måbødal valley  with its spectacular steep mountains.

Today, the road passes mainly through long tunnels, but during our excursion we will discover the ancient stone paths and beautiful bridges built in the past.

Arrival at  Hotel Fossli  and the famous  Voeringfossen waterfall . In front of the hotel, a path leads to an observation platform from which one can enjoy the view of the Voeringfossen waterfall with a deep canyon almost 600 feet high.

Return to the port of  Eidfjord .

Eidfjord, Norway

In the shadow of snowy peaks and near stunning blue-green fjords, Eidfjord is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful villages in Norway. Even though it has a population of less than 1,000, scores of visitors come here each year to bask in the area's natural splendor. 

Hardangervidda, near Eidfjord, is Europe's largest mountain plateau as well as Norway's largest national park. Interestingly, the legendary polar explorer Roald Amundsen, who led the first expedition to reach the South Pole, and Fridtjof Nansen, who made the first successful crossing of the Greenland interior, both used Hardangervidda to prepare for their expeditions. Walking, hiking, cycling and cross-country skiing are popular, and the area is home to Europe's largest population of wild reindeer.

Numerous canyons, including the famous Måbødalen Valley, lead south from the Hardangervidda plateau to the fjords along the coast, and about 16 kilometers (10 miles) south of Eidfjord, visitors can see the dramatic 182-meter-tall (597-foot-tall) Vøringfossen waterfall. In the center of Eidfjord stands the 14th-century stone Eidfjord Kirke, while outside town the famous Kjeåsen Mountain Farm sits on a ledge some 600 meters (1,968 feet) above the Simadalsfjord.
