Cape Canaveral Port

Port Cape Canaveral (locode USPCV) is located on Florida's Atlantic coastline, between Miami and Jacksonville . Orlando City is bounded by Port Canaveral (north), Banana River (east), Cocoa Beach (south) and the Atlantic Ocean (west). As a deepwater seaport, Port Canaveral has a very high volume of traffic. From a total of 6 million cargo tons moved through the port annually, 2,7+ million tons (3 million short tons) are bulk cargoes. Common cargo includes petroleum, aggregate and cement. The port features hoppers and conveyors for loading products directly into trucks, as well as bulk cargo container facilities. The channel is about 13 m (44 ft) deep.

There are 70,000 m2 (750,000 ft2) of covered freight storage capacity. In 2004 Port Canaveral handled 3,6 million tons (4M short tons) of cargo. It exports fresh citrus and bulk frozen citrus juice is stored in one of the biggest freezer warehouses in the state. The port also receives salt for water softening, lumber, automobiles, steel sheets and plates. Port Canaveral transships items for sea, air, space and land. Its Foreign Trade Zone is one of the nation's largest general-purpose FTZs, more than 13 km2 (5 mi2). Each year the port boosts the economy by 1/2 billion dollars.

Port's cruise shipping business started in 1964, with SS Yarmouth Castle. The 1927-built steamship (for Chadade Steamship Company) was acquired by Yarmouth Cruise Lines in 1957. The liner was American-owned and Panama- flagged . In 1965, the ship burnt at sea (between Nassau and Miami).

The 1965-opened sea lock (part of Canaveral Barge Canal) is still in use, being maintained by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Shipping and commercial fishing is also served by three 400 ft/120 m-long cargo piers constructed on the Port's north side in 1976. The seaport has supported NASA's space projects from the nearby JF Kennedy Space Center. During NASA's Apollo program, Saturn V rocket's segments transited via the lock. Space Shuttle's external tanks were floated for each mission into Port Canaveral, and the rocket boosters were towed back via the seaport, being fished from the Atlantic after each space launch.

In August 2015, commissioners approved USD 81 million port development project for upgrades of terminals 5 and 10, aimed at handling larger-sized vessels (details in the "terminal" section below). The project's financing was secured through bank loans and bonds.

Following President Donald Trump's executive order on immigration, in late-January 2017 were officially issued reports about cruise passengers being detained by US Customs and Border Protection. All detainees had to provide background info about them, their families and also their past life in their native countries. Trump's executive order was signed on January 27th and includes a 90-day ban on travel to the USA by citizens of Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, Yemen.

In early November 2017, RCI-Royal Caribbean announced the company's decision to homeport here in 2019 the world's largest passenger vessel - Harmony of the Seas (max capacity 6687 passengers plus 2100 crew). Starting May 2019, Harmony OTS offers 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean roundtrip itineraries. Harmony replaced Oasis OTS (redeployed in 2019 to Miami ). Also in 2019, Mariner OTS (max capacity 4200 passengers plus 1180 crew) was homeported here for 3-4-night roundtrips to The Bahamas. The ship first arrived in Port Canaveral in 2003 (inaugural cruise on November 14).

Departures are on Thursdays (4-day itinerary to Freeport and Nassau ) and on Mondays and Saturdays (5-day itinerary to Amber Cove Dominicana and Grand Turk Island ).

In December 2017, Port Canaveral completed the 6-month long West Turning Basin deepening project, now allowing max draft of 45 ft (13,7 m). Port's containership terminal (North Cargo berths 5 and 6) is operated by GT USA. The dredging works removed 22,3+ million ft3 (632,000 m3) of seabed material. For the dredging was contracted Dutra Group (based in San Rafael, California). The project's total cost was USD 7,5 million, with approx 2/3 of the cost covered by FDOT (Florida Department of Transportation). The Port's entry channel was cleared from obstructions (bridges, power lines) and is now without air draft restrictions. West Turning Basin has quay length ~600 m (2000 ft) and draft 13 m/43 ft - making it one of East Coast USA's deepest cargo berths without vessel air draft limits.

In January 2018 was approved the construction of a new multi-purpose cargo ship berth NCB8 (North Cargo Berth 8). By the project were also built a seawall (900 ft / 274 m) and a pier extension (100 ft / 31 m) with capacity to handle vessels with max LOA length 850 ft/259 m.

  • At the new berth can be handled various heavy project cargoes (including aerospace). Berth's depth is 35 ft (11 m).
  • The USD 17,9 million berth construction contract was awarded to the Tampa -based company Orion Marine Group. The contract includes building the bulkhead, seawall, relieving platform and dredging. Construction works started in March 2018, with scheduled completion by mid-2019.

In May 2024 were approved the plans for the construction of a new multi-user cruise terminal (Terminal X) at the existing North 8 Berth, directly opposite to/sharing the turning basin with Terminal 5. Terminal X is planned for inauguration in 2026 July. For the design was contracted AtkinsRealis USA Inc.

In 2018, two port development projects received funding for maintenance works in the seaport. The contractor is USACE (US Army Corps of Engineers). For the projects were allocated USD 14,76 million (Canaveral Harbor Sand Bypass and jetty upgrades) and USD 1,47 million (Harbor and Locks).

On December 5, 2018, Canaveral Port Authority (CPA) approved a series of bonds (up to USD 117 million) for financing "Cruise Terminal 3" (dubbed "Launch Pad") project. In 2021, at the new CT3 Terminal was homeported Carnival's newest and largest ( LNG-powered ) liner Mardi Gras .

  • The project's financing package included bonds up to USD 80 million (30-year, Series A and B) and up to USD 37 million (20-year loan, Series C) by SunTrust Bank (specializing in mortgage, personal and small-business banking). The bank is subsidiary of the Atlanta GA-based SunTrust Banks Inc (reported assets in March 2018 USD 199 billion).
  • Additionally was approved to increase Port's PNC Bank credit line from USD 25 to 50 million. The port also received from Florida Department of Transportation USD 6 million in grants for the infrastructure works.
  • Carnival Cruise Terminal 3 has a dedicated wharf, adjacent parking (6-storey, capacity 1800 vehicles) and a newbuild road. The project's total improvements cost USD 163 million, of which $50 million were contributed by Carnival Corporation . The facility was completed in September 2020, but due to the crisis was inaugurated on June 4, 2021, with the arrival of Mardi Gras.

On May 22, 2019, Disney Cruises signed with CPA a 20-year operating agreement for homeporting two of its three newbuilds . Under the new deal, Disney has 3 boats homeported here (2 new, 1 old) which increased the number of guaranteed roundtrips from 150 per year (2019) to 180 (2023) and 216 (2024 and beyond).

In early March 2020 was launched an RO-RO Division in Port Canaveral - a dedicated vehicle terminal with max annual capacity 240,000 cars. The 16-acres terminal is at South Cargo Pier 4 and serves mainly new import automobiles. The terminal has a large climate-controlled warehouse (sized 20,000 ft2 / 1860 m2). In FY2019, the port handled a total of 12514 vehicles.

Following the port's ban for cruise ship dockings and passenger operations (due to the COVID pandemic), in the period April 3 through May 30, 2020, Canaveral Port Authority furloughed all its employees dedicated to cruise shipping operations.

For a 5-month refurbishment project in 2020 (June through November) was closed CT8 (Disney Cruise Terminal 8).

In April 2023, Port Canaveral officials proposed the construction of a new cruise terminal (Terminal 8). The US$175 million facility could be built on the Port's southern side, and completed and opened in July 2026.

Port Canaveral cruise terminal

Besides being a large cruise port, Port Canaveral is also among the USA's/and the world's largest naval and cargo ports. On average, each day 10 cruise vessels enter the port.

Port Canaveral's cruise terminals serve several major cruise shipping companies. Terminal 5 is the homeport for ships of RCI-Royal Caribbean , Celebrity , NCL-Norwegian , Marella UK . Terminal 6 serves ships of CCL-Carnival and Princess . Terminal 10 homeports ships of MSC and NCL.

The following cruise port map shows Port Canaveral port's infrastructure, the location of terminal facilities, connecting roads and transportation links to Orlando City.

Port Canaveral is the nearest Disney World city, situated about one hour east of Orlando by car. The Orlando Airport is 45 mi/70 km away. The driving distance to Tampa is 2 hours, to Jacksonville - 2,5 hours.

There are seven cruise terminals, but in regular use are 5 - numbers 3, 5, 6, 8 and 10. They are newer, located on the Port's north side, and serve larger ships. Southside terminals are older. Gambling ships use Terminal 2. Terminal 3 is the new Carnival Cruise Line's terminal.

Currently, Terminal 4 is also used, but rarely. In April 2024 was announced a plan for a new facility at Terminal 4, to be completed in 2026.

The cruise terminal parking rate is USD 15 per day (Port Authority subject to change). There is a parking lot beside each cruise terminal. Port Canaveral offers complimentary cruise parking for disabled Veterans. Approved are waiving cruise parking fees for vehicles with DV (Disabled Veteran) license plates issued under Florida Statutes "s.320.084", "s.320.0842" or "s.320.0845".

In August 2023, Port Canaveral commissioners allocated US$67,46 million for constructing two northside cruise parking garages. For the projects was contracted Ivey's Construction Inc. The larger facility (an 8-level garage with capacity 1940 vehicles) is adjacent to Terminals 5 and 6, while the smaller one (a 6-level garage with capacity 1081 vehicles) is near Terminal 10.

(NEW) Cruise Terminal 8 (2026)

In April 2023 was proposed the construction of a new cruise terminal on the Port's southern side.

The US$175 million facility could be completed and opened in July 2026.

This proposal for a new passenger terminal came after two newbuild large cruise liners were homeported year-round in Cape Canaveral starting in 2024-Q4.

Approved in May 2024, the proposal included in the Port's budget for FY2023 (October 1, 2022, through September 30, 2023). FY23 was marked by increased cruise shipping traffic and stronger-than-expected, cruise-related revenues (including from parking) estimated at US$150,87 million. The previous estimate was US$124,48M. This represented ~83,7% of Port Canaveral's total projected operating revenue (US$180,35M) including from cargo shipping/handling, recreation, leasing, and other business activities. It was estimated that the Port's FY23 will have US$75,43M profit (including non-operating revenues and expenses) which was US$53,36M before FY23's budget began. The profit was used for port development projects and for reducing debt from previous projects.

In May 2023, were announced plans for a new cruise terminal at Bluepoints Marina's site. The facility (projected cost US$175M) would be ready/inaugurated in 2026.

The new multi-user Cruise Terminal 8 (aka Terminal X) is at the existing North 8 Berth (directly opposite to/sharing the turning basin with Cruise Terminal 5). The facility includes a multi-story parking garage (max capacity 3000 vehicles), road improvements (including turning lanes and a flyover ramp connecting Terminal 8 with State Road 401).

The project includes a pier extension and mooring improvements (Phase 1) and a bulkhead parallel to State Road 401 (between Terminal 5 and Terminal 8) in Phase 2.

(NEW) Carnival Cruise Terminal 3 (CT3-Launch Pad)

In late-April 2017, Port Canaveral started construction works on a new cruise terminal.

The facility is on the site of "Cruise Terminal 3" (port's southern / B side), west of Jetty Park and east of The Cove (dining-shopping-attractions complex). On June 7, 2017, engineering and design works for the new terminal were officially approved.

Canaveral Port Authority Commissioners approved US$1,2 million in funding for CH2M Engineering's project management contract. This was Phase I of the 2-year work plan to construct a modern facility with capacity to serve vessels with max capacity 8000 passengers.

At the new passenger terminal can berth even the world's largest cruise vessels of RCI's OASIS-class. CH2M Engineering provided engineering, support services and waterside design for the new Terminal 3.

The project's budget is USD 163 million (initially estimated cost was US$150M), of which US$50M contributed by Carnival Corporation . Ranked the USA's largest single building project, it included the demolition of the port's oldest terminal, construction of a brand new 2-story building (sized 17466 m2 / 188,000 ft2), upgrading the existing berth and building a new (adjacent to the terminal) parking garage, roadway and utility improvements.

The 20-month-long, multi-phased project included 5 separate contracts. Demolition works (of the existing Terminal 3 building) started in April 2018, at the cost of US$210,000.

  • Following the building demolition, the project's next phases included berth demolition, dredging, dockside construction, building passenger boarding (mobile) bridges and terminal building, site works, building a covered parking garage (6-story building, sized 690,000 ft2 / 64,100 m2, capacity 1800 cars).
  • On August 30, 2018, the Canaveral Port Authority (CPA) Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to approve a long-term terminal operation agreement with Carnival Cruise Line, allowing the company to homeport here its newest and biggest liner .
  • Beginning September 1, 2018, the new agreement replaced the old (6-year concession) expiring in 2019. The new 25-year primary term has 4 additional 5-year renewal options. The minimum annual revenue from passenger fees (guaranteed by Carnival) was increased from USD 7 million (fixed, per year) to USD 14,5 million (with annual escalators).
  • On January 8, 2019, the CPA Board of Commissioners awarded the company Ivey's Construction Inc the USD 79 million contract for building Cruise Terminal 3, plus USD 29,53M contract for building the adjacent parking.
  • On April 24, 2019, Canaveral Port Authority commissioners unanimously approved several design changes in the CT3 Project to reduce building costs. Ivey's Construction Inc (Merritt Island-based) won the contract in January with a bid of USD 78,98 million. However, design changes resulted in total savings of USD 4,535 million, bringing the terminal's total cost down to USD 74,45 million. In all, "Cruise Terminal 3" costs USD 163 million when are added the costs of the adjacent parking garage, waterside improvements, two passenger boarding bridges, design services. Plans were redesigned after engineering studies reduced the number of needed piles (also their size and coating) without sacrificing the structural integrity.

The new Carnival Cruise Terminal (CT3) is a 2-story building (sized 187,000 ft2 / 17370 m2) with max passenger capacity 6500 at a time. Among its amenities are electronic systems to facilitate passenger screening, mobile check-in (for expediting boarding), ATMs, restrooms, waiting and baggage halls, retail shopping area, info kiosks.

Construction works officially started on March 18, 2019, and the Terminal was completed in September 2020.

At the new CT3 terminal was homeported Carnival's largest vessel Mardi Gras (GT 180,000 tons, LNG-powered , capacity 5286 berths / max passengers 6500). The new liner's LNG bunkering is dockside (barge-to-ship).

Mardi Gras docked for the first time on June 4, 2021, and was joined later on the same day by the fleetmates Carnival Freedom and Carnival Liberty .

North (A Side) Cruise terminals (5, 6, 8, 10)

They are located on the A dock at the north side. Along is the Charles M Rowland Drive.

All are up to date and can handle the biggest passenger ships. Especially for Disney Cruise Line ships was built Cruise Terminal 8.

For a 5-month refurbishment project in 2020 was closed Disney's Cruise Terminal 8 (June through November). The closure was for installing a new curtainwall-pile (breakwater), removing ticket counters, extending the drop-off canopy, replacing the current seating.

In 2016, about USD 2,3 million were spent at Disney Terminal 8's renovations. This cruise facility is used exclusively by Disney ships. Cruise Terminal 10 was reopened on November 19, 2016, following USD 35 million expansion and upgrade project which took 6 months to complete. Terminal 10 (1994-built) is used by NCL (Norwegian Cruise Line) .

Renovation works included increasing the size of the 2-story terminal building (from 97,050 to 125,825 ft2 / 9016 to 11690 m2). Lower floor's baggage processing area was increased from 42,800 to 64,400 ft2 (3976 to 5983 m2). Upper floor's passengers check-in area was increased from 54,250 to 61,430 ft2 (5040 to 5707 m2).

The development project allowed the terminal to handle larger cruise ships (carrying up to 5,500 passengers). Previously, its max capacity was 3,600 passengers.

Among the major projects of the Cruise Terminal 10 renovations were:

  • USD 25,69 million for terminal renovations, with H.J. High of Orlando as contractor. The downstairs area where baggage processing occurs increased from the previous 42,799 ft2 to 64,396 ft2. The upstairs area where passengers check-in increased from the previous 54,249 ft2 to 61,428 ft2.
  • USD 4,48 million were invested into new mobile Passenger Boarding Bridges (by the Spanish manufacturer ADELTE). The new mobile bridge systems replaced the old fixed gangways and provide better flexibility when used by differently-sized cruise vessels that have different heights and boarding door locations.
  • USD 1,79 million were used for the existing cruise pier strengthening. The contractor (Vortex Marine of Oakland, California) used carbon fiber polymer technology to reinforce and extend the pier's life and structural capacity.

In 2016 was completed a USD 48,4 million renovation project at Cruise Terminal 5 (used mostly by Carnival Cruise Line ). Among the improvements were terminal expansion, pier elongation (by 120 ft / 37 m), new mobile boarding bridges, new parking garage (capacity 1044 cars). The 1991-built Terminal 5 now allows berthing of larger ships (with up to 3500 passengers / previously up to 2500). For the project were contracted a total of 87 companies.

South (B Side) Cruise Terminals (2, 4)

They are located on the B dock at the southwest side. Along is George King Blvd. They were among the Port's first cruise facilities and can handle not more than 1900 passengers.

(NEW) Cruise Terminal 1

On November 5, 2016, Port Canaveral received its ever largest passenger ship - Oasis of the Seas . The mega-liner docked at the new "Cruise 1 Terminal" (inaugurated in December 2014). Oasis OTS was homeported here replacing the smaller Freedom OTS .

The facility's main tenant is RCI Royal Caribbean and was designed specifically to handle Oasis-class vessels. The new terminal is sized 188,000 ft2 (17,470 m2) and has a dedicated parking garage with capacity 1007 vehicles. The project cost USD 104,6M.

Port Canaveral Port Overview (Parking, Terminals, and Maps)

If you’re heading out to Port Canaveral, there’s some great news. Despite being one of the busiest cruise ports in the world — serving roughly 4 million passengers each year — the port is a breeze to navigate.

Still, if you’re unfamiliar with the area getting to your ship can be a little confusing. That’s why we’ve put together this guide to help get you where you’re going.

Getting Acquainted with the Cruise Port

Starting out, it helps to have an overview of the port before you get there. The port is located about 45 minutes due east of Orlando, on Cape Canaveral. Don’t worry about not being able to find it. There is only one road from Orlando to Cape Canaveral — Florida 528 (a toll road also know as the “Beachline”).

The Beachline take you directly to Port Canaveral. We’ve highlighted it below:

Port Canaveral Map

Assuming you are coming from Orlando, once you reach Cape Canaveral (after going over two causeways), you will see a roadsign giving you two options. You can either stay on the Beachline to head toward the “B” cruise terminals or you can exit to your right to go to the “A” cruise terminals.

The “A” terminal is where the large cruise ships — Disney, Royal Caribbean, and Carnival — make their home. You will take this exit to your right and make a large loop around. Once you make the loop, you will see the cruise ships almost directly ahead of you.

msc cruise port canaveral terminal

Continue down this road and you will head straight until you are almost past all the cruise terminals. Eventually you will see a large blue sign listing all the cruise lines with an arrow that tells you to veer to the right. Just past that, you will see a single lane exiting to the right. This exit will lead you to the cruise terminals.

To know where to go next, you need an overview of the cruise terminals at Port Canaveral. While the port is large, each of the major cruise line has its own dedicated terminals.

Carnival uses terminals 5&6. Disney uses terminal 8. Royal Caribbean uses terminal 10.

We’ve mapped out the location of the terminals below:

Port Canaveral terminal map

Carnival Cruise Terminals (#5 & #6)

Once you exit, you will continue straight (there will be signs directing you) to head to the Carnival cruise terminals. As you continue straight, you will pass directly in front of the terminals, giving you a chance to drop off passengers or luggage.

On your left you will see the parking garage and parking lots. Things can get a little confusing, so we’ve included the map below to who you the path you can take to pass in front of the two terminals and then continue on to the parking lot.

Port Canaveral terminal 5 map

Disney Cruise Terminal (#8)

To get to Disney’s port (Terminal #8), you will take a right after exiting from the main road into the port. Once you exit, you will loop around to your right, before heading back south — the direction from which you originally came into the port.

As you head south, you will want to look for the left lane, which will be marked on the asphalt with a large arrow that says “Disney” underneath. Eventually this lane will turn to the left, and head to the terminal.

Once you turn, we suggest staying in the left two lanes. This will take you through a point where you can drop off passengers or luggage. From there, you will see the parking area on your left. The entrance is on the left, just past the parking garage.

Port Canaveral Disney terminal

Royal Caribbean Cruise Terminal (#10)

If you are sailing Royal Caribbean, you will take a right after exiting from the main road into the port. Once you exit, you will loop around to your right, before heading back south — the direction from which you originally came into the port.

From here you will pass the Disney terminal on your left. Keep going. Eventually the road loops around toward the ship and the Royal Caribbean terminal.

Parking is on your right so you will want to be in the rightmost lane, exiting just before you reach the parking garage and surface lot.

Port Canaveral terminal 10

One thing to keep in mind no matter where you cruise from — help is just a question away. Cruise days are busy, and the port understands that many people aren’t sure exactly where they should go. Don’t hesitate to ask.

Port Canaveral Cruise Guide: What You Need To Know

Located on Florida’s east coast, Port Canaveral is the closest cruise port to Orlando and its world-class theme parks and entertainment options.

cruise ship exterior view

In addition to its premium location, this Central Florida port is easy to access and simple to navigate. Over the years, the port has been known to host many of the newest ships, most notably from Disney Cruise Line and Carnival Cruise Line.

One of the world’s most popular cruise ports, Port Canaveral sees millions of guests each year. In 2019, over 4.8 million multi-day cruisers sailed from the port.

Port Canaveral Address

  • Royal Caribbean (Terminal 1): 9050 Discovery Rd., Port Canaveral, FL 32920
  • Carnival (Terminal 3): 32 George King Blvd., Port Canaveral, FL 32920
  • Carnival (Terminal 5, 6): 9245 Charles M. Rowland Dr., Port Canaveral, FL 32920
  • Disney (Terminal 8): 9155 Charles M. Rowland Dr., Port Canaveral, FL 32920
  • Norwegian (Terminal 10): 9005 Charles M. Rowland Dr., Port Canaveral, FL 32920

Roughly halfway down the Florida peninsula, Port Canaveral is a great cruising spot. Ships sailing from the homeport can easily access ports of call in the Caribbean and Bahamas.

Additionally, because of its proximity to the Bahamas, most itineraries sailing from Port Canaveral include a stop at one of the cruise lines’ private islands, including Castaway Cay (Disney Cruise Line), Perfect Day at CocoCay (Royal Caribbean Group), Half Moon Cay and Princess Cays (Carnival Corporation), Ocean Cay (MSC Cruises), and Great Stirrup Cay (Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings).

Cruise Terminals

Cruise terminals at Port Canaveral are divided into two complexes: “A” on the north side and “B” on the south side.

Terminals in the A complex include 5, 6, 8, and 10 and serve Carnival, Norwegian, and Disney.

B complex terminals 1, 2, and 3 are the home of Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and MSC Cruises.

Terminal 3 is the newest addition to the port and hosts Carnival Cruise Line’s upcoming ship, Mardi Gras .

Cruise Lines That Homeport at Port Canaveral

Port Canaveral aerial view

Which cruise lines sail from Port Canaveral? Pretty much every big name in the business has some of their most exciting and innovative ships sailing from terminals located at this port on a year-round or seasonal basis, including:

  •     Carnival Cruise Line
  •     Royal Caribbean
  •     Norwegian Cruise Line
  •     MSC Cruises
  •     Disney Cruise Line

Each operator has multiple ships sailing varied itineraries from Port Canaveral, so check each of them out and see which appeals to your taste, budget, and schedule.

Ground Transportation at Port Canaveral

transportation options at Port Canaveral

Given that Port Canaveral is not in a major city, you might think your options for transportation to and from the area would be difficult. Yet the region is a major tourism destination, and transit options abound.

The Orlando International Airport (MCO) is less than an hour away, and the Beach Line Expressway (SR-528) connects the airport to the cruise port.

Cruise Line Shuttle

Each of the major cruise lines offers a shuttle service, which can be expensive when compared to other modes of transportation. However it does ensure timely arrival and departure, and is easy to use since cruise line staff will handle your luggage.

Rental Cars and Driving

If you prefer to drive yourself or have planned activities before or after your cruise, a car rental is your best bet. With plenty of attractions in the area, this is a very popular choice for cruisers who sail out of Port Canaveral.

Keep in mind that renting a car for the duration of your entire trip means you’ll have to pay for parking at the port or in a remote lot.

Some car rental companies offer one-way car rentals to and from the airport for an additional drop-off surcharge. However, the ability to rent the car only for your vacation time on land and not while you’re at sea could make the surcharge worth it. It’s likely cheaper than paying to rent and park a car you’re not using.

Independent Shuttle Services

Independent shuttle services offer one-way transportation between the Orlando airport and the cruise port.

It is best to book these in advance, especially if there are multiple ships in port. Don’t assume you can find a shuttle to the airport when you walk off the ship. Though it is possible, it can lead to a stressful start to your journey home.

Ridesharing Services

Another option is a ridesharing service, such as Uber or Lyft. If you’re flying into Orlando, the ride to Port Canaveral will cost approximately $60-$80 one way (depending on traffic).

However, if you split the fare with others in your party, the per-person rate can be reasonable. Compare the price to that of a shuttle; it sometimes works out cheaper, plus it’ll only be your group in the vehicle.

Drop-off is right at the terminal. Pickup is at designated areas on Level 2, at each end of the curb; look for signs marked “TNC Pick-Up.”

How Far Is Port Canaveral From the Orlando Airport?

Orlando Airport interior

Port Canaveral is approximately a 45-minute car ride from Orlando International Airport (MCO).

Keep an eye on airfare to Tampa (TPA) and Jacksonville (JAX); sometimes, flights to these airports can be significantly cheaper than ones to Orlando (MCO), and the airports are only about an hour’s drive farther.

Additionally, at an hour away from Port Canaveral, the Sanford International Airport (SFB) often has excellent prices with discount carrier Allegiant Air.

Tip: If you’re flying a low-cost carrier such as Allegiant, Spirit, or Frontier, be sure to account for the baggage fees. The airfare can be as little as $19, but you’ll pay extra for both carry-on and checked luggage.

Port Canaveral Parking Options

Cruise Terminal 3 parking garage

For the most convenient parking option, the lots at the terminals are definitely the easiest to access but come with a hefty price tag of $17 per day.

The cruise pier lots aren’t your only option. There are several companies, all within one to 10 miles from the port, which offer secured lots and roundtrip transportation to the piers.

These include Cruisetime Parking, Go Port, Park N Cruise,  and Canaveral Cruise Parking . Each of these park-and-ride lots ranges in price from $6.95 to $10.95 per day and sometimes has specials and discounts available.

Closer to the port at only two miles away is Park Port Canaveral, which advertises a standard rate of $10.95 per day.

When Should I Arrive at the Cruise Port?

cruise port calm seas

When you have paid your final deposit for your cruise, you will either be assigned or choose a boarding time during the online check-in process. It is best to arrive at the port around 30 minutes prior to your boarding time.

This will give you ample time to find a parking spot (if driving), check any luggage, and then go through the security and health screenings.

If you’re parking off-site, be sure to allow time for the shuttle ride from the lot to the port.

Keep in mind you’ll have to be on board the ship no later than one hour prior to the posted departure time.

Hotels Close to Port Canaveral

hotels near Port Canaveral

Many of the main hotel brands have locations close to Port Canaveral. A mile or two from the terminals are several mid-range options, including Hilton, Marriott, and Radisson hotel brands, which usually have prices ranging from around $100 to $300 per night. (Note that hotel prices vary based on travel dates and room availability.)

If you want a beachfront hotel, those begin about 2 miles away from Port Canaveral. Both hotel chains and Airbnb start at around $150 per night.

affordable hotels nearby

If you’re not looking to stay at the port area, you may try Cocoa and Titusville, which are only a 20 to 30-minute drive away. These towns have hotels and motels that are routinely under $100 per night. Brands in this area include Choice Hotels (Quality Inn, Econo Lodge, etc.), Best Western, and others.

Tip: Constantly check the website Hotels.com and the HotelTonight app for price drops in the area.

If you’re driving to the port, check with your hotel to see if they offer a stay and cruise option, giving you a one-night hotel stay, parking, and a shuttle to and from the port for a packaged price.

Things to Do at Port Canaveral

The Rocket Garden near Port Canaveral

If you arrive before your scheduled boarding appointment or have some time to kill before your shuttle, you have options.

Several waterfront restaurants cluster in the space near the terminals, with a handful serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

local eateries near Port Canaveral

Fishlips offers good food at a good price, with scenic views of the ships from its second-floor deck. Grills Seafood Deck and Tiki Bar is another spot for live music, food, and cold drinks. Both restaurants offer spectacular sail away sights.

Local Views

For great views of the port and the Atlantic Ocean, visit the Exploration Tower located on the west side of the port property. It has interactive exhibits and a viewing platform.

Manatee Sanctuary Park, just a few minutes from the port, is a 10-acre park that often hosts the park’s namesake animal, along with other critters like turtles, seabirds, and sandhill cranes. It even has a fun playground for kids.

If you’re staying in the area for a longer period before or after your cruise, it’s easy to spend a few days exploring the Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral areas.

Visit Kennedy Space Center

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex

At the top of most visitors’ must-see list is the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.

It’s easy to spend a full day here. The highlight is the bus tour, which takes you deep into the NASA operational areas.

There’s also an IMAX film and opportunities to learn about the space shuttle program, see the actual Shuttle Atlantis, and meet the people behind the space program in the Heroes and Legends Center and Astronaut Hall of Fame.

Visit Various Beaches and Souvenir Shops

If you want to soak up the Florida sun, a day at the easily accessible Cocoa Beach will not disappoint. For a fun souvenir, check out the original location of the world-famous Ron Jon Surf Shop in Cocoa Beach.

And, of course, you’re only an hour’s drive from all the Walt Disney World theme parks (Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and Disney Springs), Legoland Florida, and Universal Orlando (Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, and City Walk).

Best Sail Away Spot at Port Canaveral

Jetty Park near Port

Many folks like to watch the cruise ships sail away, whether they have friends or family on board or not. It’s truly a majestic experience as these huge ships glide through the water out to sea.

Port Canaveral has taken this into consideration by constructing the Jetty Park and Pier , located just east of the port area along the seafront.

The admission fee to enter the park is $16 per car, which includes access to the boardwalk, sandy beaches, and showers.

You’ll also find parking areas, a bar and grill, and a long pier jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean, which is the perfect spot to watch cruise ships sail away.

Pin it for later!

The plan includes the development of a terminal as well as a parking garage complex. Port Canaveral, recognized for its role as a gateway for sea travel, is taking a proactive approach, aiming to address the needs of new cruise ships and their passengers.

Keeping an eye on the future positions the port to continue its trajectory of growth and success. A new cruise terminal ultimately benefits the local economy, the broader travel sector and cargo needs.

Strategic Importance of the Port Canaveral New Cruise Terminal

Port Canaveral’s initiative to construct a new cruise terminal is a significant undertaking that is expected to yield positive economic and touristic outcomes. The proposed cruise terminal is not merely an expansion; it’s a thoughtful integration with the port’s current facilities. The new cruise terminal is setting new standards in providing exceptional service and seeks to meet increasing consumer demand.

Enhanced Economic Impact of Florida’s Port

The proposed cruise terminal at Port Canaveral is a multi-user facility. This aspect of the project provides significant cost savings and operational flexibility . The substantial construction investment is forecasted to boost the local economy by creating jobs. Analysts expect more local employment during both the construction and the operational stages.

Enhancements at the North 8 berth enable the port to handle more ships and thereby increase the volume of passengers. More passengers create ripple effects on local businesses and service providers.

New Cruise Terminal Has Potential to Spur Tourism Growth

Port Canaveral is reinforcing its role as a gateway to the attractions of Florida’s Space Coast with the new cruise terminal . By anticipating the needs of the ever-expanding cruise market, the terminal supports a surge in tourist numbers. With added berthing capacity and upgraded facilities, Port Canaveral will be able to welcome larger vessels and more tourists, which could help to reinforce the region as a premier cruise destination and mitigate the risk of a cruise ship accident due to overcapacity.

Port Canaveral’s Safety and Regulation Considerations

The construction of a new cruise terminal at Port Canaveral involves meticulous planning to ensure navigational safety, robust emergency protocols, and adherence to stringent environmental regulations.

Navigational Safety at New Cruise Terminal

Port Canaveral’s new terminal design incorporates advanced navigational safety features to mitigate the risk of cruise ship accidents. The inclusion of state-of-the-art radar and surveillance systems aims to provide clear and real-time navigational data to port operators and incoming vessels. Additionally, strict traffic separation schemes ensure safe passage for cruise ship traffic entering and leaving the port.

Emergency Protocols in Place

The terminal will have comprehensive emergency protocols in place in case of an incident. There will be clear evacuation routes, with signage visible throughout the terminal. The staff will receive in-depth training on how to manage various types of emergencies, from medical crises to security threats. Enhanced training ensures an efficient response that prioritizes passenger and crew safety.

Terminal to Focus on Environmental Sustainability

Port Canaveral’s expansion plan team are committed to environmental stewardship . It will comply with all environmental regulations , including those related to waste management and pollution control. Measures like shore power connections and wastewater treatment facilities will minimize the environmental impact of the terminal operations and the cruise ships docked there. The goal is to balance industry growth with the preservation of Florida’s coastal ecosystem.

Galveston cruise port: A guide to cruising from Texas

Melinda Crow

The Port of Galveston is the fourth-most-popular cruise home port in the U.S., having hosted 1.49 million cruise passengers in 2023.

While that's still a small number compared to the Florida ports ( Miami , Port Canaveral near Orlando and Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades ), the Port of Galveston continues to grow. The ships are getting bigger, cruise lines are expanding the itineraries they offer from Galveston and, in 2025, MSC Cruises will begin homeporting in Galveston with the introduction of year-round sailings on MSC Seascape . The total number of ship calls on the port's 2024 calendar is 388.

Most cruises from Galveston visit the Western Caribbean destinations of Cozumel, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; Belize; Jamaica; and Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands. However, you can find other options; for example, Carnival Cruise Line offers longer sailings (up to 14 nights) that include Eastern and Southern Caribbean ports.

Galveston itself is a beach destination worth spending time in either pre- or post-cruise, with a variety of hotel choices ranging from economy to luxury to historic. Families can find plenty to enjoy, and adults can enjoy the city's vibrant nightlife.

Terminal 10

Royal Caribbean bases three ships here, offering a mix of eight-night Bahamas cruises, which visit Perfect Day at CocoCay, and four- to eight-night cruises primarily in the Western Caribbean.

Terminal 16 (opening in November 2025)

MSC Cruises will base MSC Seascape year-round at a new terminal in Galveston. The ship will sail to the Western Caribbean, visiting Cozumel, Roatan and Mexico's Costa Maya.

Terminals 25 and 28

Multiple cruise lines share terminals 25 and 28. Carnival rotates a fleet of four ships year-round in Galveston, including the line's Texas flagship, Carnival Jubilee . The fleet offers four- to 14-night cruises throughout Mexico, the Caribbean and the Bahamas.

Princess Cruises sails seasonally from Galveston, offering four- to 11-night cruises in the Caribbean and Bahamas.

Norwegian Cruise Line rotates a variety of ships seasonally through the Port of Galveston, offering seven- to 14-night sailings throughout the Caribbean, including visits to the line's private island, Harvest Caye, in Belize. Norwegian also sometimes offers one-way cruises from Galveston on point-to-point sailings to other destinations like Central and South America.

Disney Magic runs seasonally from Galveston, offering four- to six-night Western Caribbean itineraries.

Closest airports to the Galveston cruise port

George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) is in north Houston, approximately 71 miles from the Port of Galveston. Airlines that fly to IAH include United Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, Spirit Airlines, Frontier Airlines and Alaska Airlines. Delta fans can save with the airline's annual companion certificate via its American Express-branded credit cards.

IAH is a United hub, with airline-branded lounges in four of the five terminals, including a Polaris Lounge in Terminal E. Terminal D at IAH features an Amex Centurion Lounge with access for holders of The Platinum Card® from American Express .

William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) is a bit closer to the port (41 miles) but is served by fewer airlines. Look for flights on Southwest Airlines, Jet Blue, American and Delta. Southwest offers the opportunity to fly two-for-one with the Southwest Companion Pass .

Houston Hobby lacks luxury lounges, but does have a Gameway gaming lounge, with access available to Priority Pass members via a selection of credit cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® or Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card .

How to get to the Port of Galveston

msc cruise port canaveral terminal

Cruisers have multiple options for getting to the Port of Galveston, including:

The port of Galveston is on a coastal barrier island south of the city of Houston. The main highway into Galveston is Interstate Highway 45. It is possible to arrive from the east using the Port Bolivar car ferry, but the potential for ferry delays often outweighs the extra driving time it takes to go around the bay to reach the I-45 bridge.

Car rentals between IAH or HOU and Galveston

Currently, only Enterprise offers rental drop-offs in Galveston. With one-way fees and fuel, a midsize car or SUV could cost $200 for an overnight rental. This option gains value if your travel group has plans for exploring a bit pre- or post-cruise. You'll still need transportation from the Enterprise facility to the port, a distance of roughly 3 1/2 miles.

Cruise line airport transfers

You can travel from either Houston airport to the Port of Galveston on embarkation day via transfers prepurchased from the cruise lines. These are usually offered to passengers who buy air through the cruise line, but even those who book independently can call to make the purchase.

Carnival has instructions online for booking transfers from Houston airports, including flight timing restrictions. The cost is currently $58.99 per person from IAH and $41.99 per person from HOU. Return transfers would be similarly priced.

Independent airport shuttles from Houston airports to the cruise port

Local companies operate shuttle services between both Houston airports and Galveston, either to the cruise port or to a Galveston hotel. Galveston Express has shared van rides starting at $40 per person each way.

Independent van/car services

Multiple companies offer private car service from the airports to either the pier or a Galveston hotel. SuperShuttle offers private car service to the port starting at $80 per person. Blacklane offers chauffeured car service, averaging around $200 from either airport to the port, for up to three people and two bags. A larger Mercedes van for up to five passengers will cost around $250.

Hotel shuttles

Roughly half of the hotels located in Galveston offer free shuttles to the cruise pier. Hotels outside of Galveston rarely provide shuttles to the port.

Taxis and ride-hailing services

Getting from a Galveston hotel to the port via ride-hailing service, such as Uber or Lyft , is possible, but not always your best choice. Galveston is a relatively small island and when two or more ships are departing on the same day, extended wait times for pickups at your hotel can cause delays and surge pricing can make the trip more expensive than you anticipated.

Taxis and ride-hailing services are available at both Houston airports. Taxis are metered, with fares averaging $165 from IAH. For ride-hailing services, follow signs and use your apps for directions to pickup points. We checked a prebooked Uber from IAH and were shown a starting fare of $98.

Public transportation

Galveston does not offer public transportation to the cruise port. The Galveston Island Trolley has bus and rail lines that are ideal for traveling between pre- or post-cruise hotels and on-island attractions, but it stops short of the port.

Port of Galveston parking

msc cruise port canaveral terminal

Galveston cruise passengers often drive to the port, so parking options abound. These include both official Port of Galveston parking and private lots. For guests not staying in a Galveston hotel, private parking lots are the cheapest option. If your plan includes a hotel stay and your hotel offers a parking package, it is almost guaranteed to be at a lower price than the lots closer to the port. Reservations made well in advance are recommended for all parking options.

On-site parking

Parking for terminals 25 and 28 is a bit spread out. Some lots have shuttle service, others are walking access only. The walk can be as far as two blocks. You can choose from covered and uncovered options, with prices ranging from $22 to $26.

Parking at the newer Royal Caribbean Terminal 10 includes shuttle services for all lots. All parking at Terminal 10 is uncovered. The price per day is $22 to $25.

Private parking facilities

Private parking options near the terminals include indoor and covered parking, all with shuttles. Some service only terminals 25 and 28, while others will also service Terminal 10. If the reservation form doesn't list your cruise ship or sailing date, it means that lot doesn't serve the terminal you need.

Prices are competitive and usually lower than official port parking. For example, Lighthouse Parking beats the terminal's official parking lots, offering covered parking for around $20 per day, with shuttle service to all terminals.

Some, like Galveston Park N Cruise, offer discounts for prepaying. That lot only serves terminals 25 and 28 (Carnival and Princess) and does not provide a shuttle because it's across the street from the terminal. Prepaid rates for indoor parking are as low as $18.50 per day for a seven-night cruise.

Park-and-cruise

If you plan an overnight stay in Galveston, the cheapest parking option is a hotel with a parking package. Many Galveston hotels offer cruise parking to guests who stay either before or after a cruise. Some offer parking free of charge; most charge a fee for leaving your car behind. The best scenario is a hotel with both a parking option and a shuttle to the port.

Hotels near the Galveston cruise port

msc cruise port canaveral terminal

Hotels are abundant in Galveston, all of them 10 miles or less from the port. Because this is both a small port town and a vacation destination, rates and room availability fluctuate widely. Whether you need a one-night stay as close as possible to the port or are looking for a longer stay to fully explore this charming beach town, here are some of the many choices to consider.

Hilton hotels near the Port of Galveston

For a quick overnight before your cruise, the DoubleTree is a good choice (32,000 to 168,000 Hilton Honors points per night). It has a pool and free Wi-Fi and is across the street from the beach. It also offers parking package options.

For a more resort-style stay, consider the Hilton Galveston Island Resort (32,000 to 338,000 Hilton Honors points per night). It's within walking distance of the beach and offers parking and shuttle packages.

Marriott hotels near the Port of Galveston

For an affordable stay with beach access, check out the Courtyard Galveston Island (30,000 to 59,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night). You can dine at its on-site restaurant or venture out — either by foot or via the island's trolley — to sample the island's renowned seafood. Wi-Fi is free for Bonvoy members.

The Grand Galvez, part of Marriott's Autograph Collection, is the city's signature hotel. First opened in 1911 as the Hotel Galvez, it is the only historic beachfront hotel on the entire Texas coast. A stay here (from 50,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night) is a grand way to start a cruise vacation.

For a hotel even closer to the pier and the city's famed downtown strand, the Tremont House is a luxury option from the Tribute Portfolio (from 55,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night). Its Blum & Co. bistro and wine bar is open all day and well into the evening for those arriving from late flights into Houston. The hotel has park-and-sail packages as well as transportation to the terminal.

Hyatt hotels near the Port of Galveston

The nearest Hyatt is the Hyatt Regency Baytown, a Category 3 hotel (from 9,000 World of Hyatt points per night). It's an hour's drive from the port, situated not far from Space Center Houston and the Kemah Boardwalk, if those are on your to-do list pre- or post-cruise.

Non-points hotels near the Port of Galveston

A stay at Moody Gardens Hotel, Spa and Convention Center is a whopper of a family-friendly choice. Besides the aquarium, rainforest and discovery museum on-site, the property boasts a beachy water park and lazy river, and a paddlewheel boat offering dinner cruises. The hotel offers cruise parking and a cruise shuttle for a fee.

Leaving the kids behind? The San Luis Resort, Spa and Conference Center is family-friendly, but its lack of attractions for children (other than a pool) means fewer children will likely be on the property. That makes it ideal for a couples or singles escape. The resort has ocean-view rooms and suites, four restaurants and a luxury spa to kick off (or finish off) your cruise.

Restaurants near Galveston cruise port

The food scene in Galveston includes everything from baskets of fish and chips done Texas style (which means it's probably wrapped in bacon and served with jalapenos) to elegant chop houses and seafood establishments. Choices line Seawall Boulevard and extend to the Strand Historic District and the Pier 21 tourist area.

Seafood is the predominant option, but it's also possible to sample barbecue and Tex-Mex.

Things to do in and around Galveston before or after your cruise

msc cruise port canaveral terminal

The beach is the No. 1 reason people visit Galveston. It stretches for 32 miles (more than 10 miles protected by a seawall and promenade) and is dotted with fishing piers, overwater souvenir shops and the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier amusement park. The best part is that almost anything you need in Galveston is across the street from the beach, including most of the hotels and restaurants.

The bar scene along the seawall has plenty to offer, from rooftop outdoor seating at Pelican and the Shark at the 61st Street Fishing Pier to the famous Poop Deck facing the beach. The Strand has its own concentration of bars, from classy wine bars to genuine dive bars.

Beyond the beach, look for a Texas original water park — Schlitterbahn and Moody Gardens. Kids and adults both can delight in the three Moody Gardens pyramids. One's an aquarium featuring penguins, seals and a coral reef lab. Another is a rainforest, home to over 1,700 exotic plants and endangered animals, including free-roaming sloths and birds that fly between the trees as you walk the trails below the canopy. The third pyramid is a discovery museum with rotating exhibits. Expect animal encounters and hands-on "edutainment" at all three.

Shopping near the Port of Galveston

For last-minute cruise clothes, swing by the Tanger Outlets on I-45, approximately 20 miles north of Galveston in Texas City. As luck would have it, there's a Buc-ees right next door. Besides the clean bathrooms, you'll find Texas souvenirs, out-of-the-ordinary snacks, drinks and even decent barbecue packed into a supersize gas station and roadside palooza.

You won't have trouble finding Galveston's Walmart and Target if you're looking to purchase last-minute snacks, sundries, bottled water, soda or wine to carry on board ( where allowed ).

Hot spots for beachwear, hats, sunglasses and souvenirs specific to Galveston are Dolphin World and the Mermaid Pier.
