10 Fantastic Things To Do Outdoors In Mobile, Alabama

  • Activities and Interests
  • Adventure Travel
  • Destinations
  • Family Vacations
  • History and Culture
  • Outdoor Activities
  • Types of Travel
  • United States

Outdoor adventures in Mobile, Alabama, naturally focus on the Gulf Coast and water activities (kayak with alligators, anyone?). You can explore the Tensaw Delta, Mobile Bay, and the Mobile River by fishing boat, eco tour, kayak, and more. Or, step off the water for a bit to visit a marshland sanctuary, explore the Alabama Bird Trail, or even see what life was like for soldiers in the 1800s.

I visited Mobile previously on a press tour. It was an eco-tour that took us around the area to see up close the diverse ecosystems both on land and water. Since Alabama is one of the most biologically diverse states in the U.S., we discovered a multitude of plants and animals in the area’s wetlands and woodlands. It’s a perfect destination to get outdoors and explore a variety of nature-centric activities.

1. Take A Delta Eco Boat Tour

Experience the diversity of the ecosystem in Mobile on a delta safari tour with Wild Native Tours . You’ll travel aboard an enclosed seasonal vessel with padded seats, a PA system, and restrooms for a 90-minute tour. Mobile is home to the most diverse ecosystem in the U.S., the fourth largest estuary in North America, and the 11th busiest port in the nation. You’ll travel from the bustling port, through Mobile Bay, and into the Mobile Tensaw Delta. You’ll see local wildlife like alligators, birds, and dolphins, naval vessels, cargo ships, plus historical landmarks like the USS Alabama . You’ll be entertained along the way with funny and interesting stories about the sights you see.

2. Watch For Dolphins On A Gulf Coast Cruise

Search for dolphins on a cruise departing from Orange Beach during which you’ll view the Alabama coastline while watching for Atlantic bottlenose dolphins. Plus, if time allows, the crew will pull up a crab pot to see if there’s a daily catch — a big favorite with children. And if the dolphins are feeling playful, you may catch them surfing in the boat wake!

According to one Viator reviewer, “The sunset cruise was so beautiful. We saw lots of dolphins and they even put on a little show when the captain created some wakes! They will allow you to bring a small cooler so we got to enjoy some wine and cheese while watching the sunset. I would highly recommend for adults and kids!”

3. Kayak The Bartram Canoe Trail

Start with a tour of the 5 Rivers Delta Center , a $10 million facility located where the Mobile, Spanish, Tensaw, Apalachee, and Blakely rivers flow into Mobile Bay. Experience the exhibit hall, learning center, walking trails, and campsites — four of which are floating platforms — and gift shop before putting into the water for a guided kayaking tour. This facility serves as a gateway to more than 250,000 acres of waterways, woods, and wetlands. Follow the Bartram Canoe Trail and be prepared to view alligators in their natural habitat.

4. Try Mountain Biking At Chickasabogue Park

The Chickasabogue Park offers 12 loop trails for a total of 14 bikeable miles. There are challenging single-track paths for experienced bikers plus easier trails for beginners. It’s an interesting journey across boardwalks that carry you over wetlands and bogs, intertwined loops, and swales if you’d like to do some mudding. To keep the trails from wearing down over time, the park alternates days you can ride certain trails.

Rootsrated , a platform for finding the best, hand-picked outdoor activities, says many riders call this the best set of trails in the Mobile area. The trails are rated intermediate but have options for beginners that allow everyone to “get their feet wet in the sport,” and technical challenges for experienced bikers. “The paths are root strewn with a few rocks, some sandy patches, some hills to climb, and plenty of swales so you can do a little mudding. There are also several boardwalks over wetlands and bogs to make the trips even more interesting.”

Birds in Mobile, Alabama.

5. Bird Watching

If birding is your interest, you’ll want to explore the Coastal Alabama Birding Trails on nearby Dauphin Island. If you go for spring viewing, know that Dauphin Island was named one of the top four locations in North America for viewing spring migrations . At the Audubon Bird Sanctuary, you can hike a three-mile trail system that includes maritime forest, marshes, and dunes with a lake, a swamp, and a beach. Located on 137 acres, the sanctuary is the largest segment of protected forest on the island and “the first landfall for neo-tropical migrant birds after their long flight across the Gulf from Central and South America each spring.”

The Audubon Bird Sanctuary was recognized by the National Audubon Society as being globally important for bird migrations. On a visit to the sanctuary, you can enjoy hiking, photographing the wildlife (we saw turtles and a small alligator from the dock of one lake along the trail), bird watching, and the various colors of each season.

6. Explore Fort Gaines

While you’re on Dauphin Island, stop by Fort Gaines to see how soldiers lived in the 1800s. This 19th-century brick seacoast fort houses a working blacksmith shop with live demonstrations, the Officer’s Quarters, and costumed interpreters who put on exhibitions like the firing of the actual cannons used in the Battle of Mobile Bay. You can see a video I shot of the firing of the cannon here .

The USS Alabama in Mobile.

7. Explore The USS Alabama

Take a self-guided walking tour of the historic battleship USS Alabama , the submarine USS Drum , tanks, artillery, and the aircraft pavilion. Step back in time as you see this 100-acre battleship park up close.

The mission of the USS Alabama Battleship Commission when created in 1963 was to “establish, operate, and maintain a state memorial park to honor the Alabamians who participated so valiantly in all armed conflicts of the United States … and, as a permanent public memorial to educate the public on the contributions and sacrifices of the veterans of all branches of the United States Armed Services in all conflicts.”

8. Visit An Alligator Sanctuary

At Alligator Alley , you’ll find a swamp sanctuary, home to more than 200 American alligators and other wildlife. Walk along the elevated boardwalk to view the alligators close up. About halfway through, you’ll come upon Captain Crunch, a 13-foot, 2,982-pound alligator said to have the world’s strongest bite. View the alligators in all manner of poses, with gators from hatchlings to mature adults relaxing, sunbathing, courting, and nesting. During the tour you may also see turtles, ospreys, owls, and bullfrogs.

The alligator farm was opened by Wes Moore in 2004. Moore rescues the alligators, bringing them from unsafe areas to the farm, which is designed to give them a natural environment. The alligators are considered “nuisance animals” because they’ve lost their natural fear of humans, making them dangerous. If an alligator is more than 4 feet in length and determined dangerous to humans or their property, they must be removed. Alligator Alley becomes their new home and the safe educational walking tour is an excellent opportunity to view these massive creatures.

9. Walk Around Downtown

In addition to the busy port, downtown Mobile is a creative hub with art galleries, shops, restaurants, and bars best explored on foot. Evenings and weekends are filled with festivals, open-air markets, live concerts, and special events. Home to America’s original Mardi Gras, you can experience the oldest organized Carnival celebration in the U.S. here. Find everything there is to know, see, and do in downtown Mobile at the Downtown Mobile Alliance .

While you’re downtown, explore Mobile’s award-winning food scene with Gulf Coast dishes like gumbo, pralines, and oysters, plus hear stories about more than 300 years of Mobile history covering everything from Bienville to Hank Aaron to the Moon Pie on a food tour .

10. Tour A Maritime Museum

Although only part of this tour is actually outdoors, for anyone interested in the maritime history of the area, a visit to GulfQuest National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico shouldn’t be missed. The mission of the museum is “to inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to understand and appreciate the Gulf Coast and its rich maritime heritage through exhibits, programs, and activities.”

With 90 interactive exhibits including theaters, simulators, and displays, it will be a day-long visit. If you don’t have an entire day to spend at the museum, don’t miss the GulfQuest Theater with its 16-minute film on the rich maritime history and culture of the Gulf of Mexico and Mobile Bay from past to present. The Take the Helm pilot simulator is another popular exhibit where visitors can try navigating a variety of vessels around the Port of Mobile, Mobile Bay, and the Tombigbee River in a simulator identical to those used to train professional boat pilots.

THE EXPERIENCES YOU'VE HEARD ABOUT

Preview the most haunted locations in mobile, the malaga inn.

One of the most historic hotels in Mobile is also one of the most haunted in the nation. Beneath this stunning piece of architecture sits a set of tunnels once used to hide Confederate soldiers, and once was the site of several gruesome ends. Discover the spirits of the soldiers and the various other entities that cause fear in the hearts of guests at The Malaga Inn.

Cathedral Square

A seemingly peaceful spot, Cathedral Square was once the site of Mobile’s oldest graveyard. Though several of its earliest inhabitants have since been moved, some were sadly left behind. Combined with an Oak Tree that sprouted from the grave of a wrongly executed man, and you have a piece of Mobile infamously known for its unexplained activity.

The Battle House Renaissance Mobile Hotel

As the former site of a military base during the War of 1812, it should be no surprise that the fighting that once occurred here has continued even in the afterlife. However, the spirits of long-deceased soldiers aren’t alone. Learn about the original Mardi Gras King’s ties to the hotel and why he may never be able to leave.

Welcome to Port City Ghosts

Discover why this unsuspecting city doubles as an otherworldly portal, opened by disturbed burial grounds, angered spirits of stolen territory, soldiers lost to war, and victims of unhinged violence.

The Hallowed Grounds of Death

Once referred to as an Old Spanish Town, Mobile has seen its fair share of bloodshed as it served as a prize for the various armies that fought to claim it. Death and destruction forged the way for the birth of The Port City, and the remnants of these melees continue to reverberate throughout the city’s most scarred locations.

Underneath the very earth that holds the festivals Mobile has become known for lies the decrepit remains of the original settlers, their souls unable to rest from unceremoniously being unearthed. However, as it usually goes in these events, not all bodies were moved to their new resting place.

Port City Ghosts takes you to Cathedral Square, the site of the city’s first graveyard, where Yellow Fever helped fill the plots in a non-discriminatory fashion. Many children succumbed to this horrific plague, suffering terribly before their untimely deaths. Today, the creepy sounds of disembodied children’s laughter and invisible feet running along the grass can be heard by unsuspecting visitors.

Of course, they’re not alone. Hear the unsettling story of Charles Boyington, a man wrongly convicted of murder and unjustly hanged. His eerie final words rang true, and an Oak Tree sprouted from his grave without explanation. Boyington’s tortured whispers and screams can be heard from the tree, his spirit seemingly unable to move on from his earthly prison.

These horrors and more await on your walk through historic haunted Mobile. Prepare for a night of thrilling tales and spine-tingling scares from Port City Ghosts and the lost souls that lurk in the shadows of their former stomping grounds.

What Will I See?

Visit Mobile’s Most Haunted Locations Including:

  • The Richards DAR House – In an area that was a symbol of wealth and status sits a community of homes that helped save downtown Mobile from demolition. Did the spirits of the Richards DAR House have anything to do with it? Find out more about this infamous haunted house and the family that refuses to leave it.
  • The Malaga Inn –  Prepare to discover a hotel that is so haunted that it’s been compared to those of The Hollywood Roosevelt, The Stanley Hotel, and The Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast. Hear about the evil that dwells in the tunnels located beneath the hotel and who (or what!) joins the spirits of soldiers in terrifying guests and staff alike.
  • Fort Conde Inn –  There are several buildings that remain from the city’s era of War, though not all are brimming with unexplained activity like that of Colonial Fort Conde. The terrifying sight of soldiers appearing in the manner in which they died is a common occurrence, and if you look closely, you might see one yourself.

Hotels of Horror

Haunted hotels and Inns can be found all over the nation, but very few deliver on their otherworldly claims. The Malaga Inn is amongst those that house the petrifying unexplained phenomena it proclaims and is touted as one of the most haunted hotels in America.

Though the wars may be over, the atrocities committed never really die. In Mobile, they emanate from above and below. Uncover the secret tunnels harboring heavy energy that festers below the floors of The Malaga Inn. Once used during the Civil War for hiding Confederate soldiers, they would become tunnels of death, with soldiers meeting gruesome ends in these dank and dark holes.

It’s said that hauntings that occur within the hotel’s walls rival those of Los Angeles’s Hollywood Roosevelt and The Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast, as nearly every room in The Malaga Inn exudes its own unexplained activity. Room 007 is believed to be the most haunted, inhabited by the spirit of a woman dressed all in white who is known to pace back and forth across the room.

Reports include the woman crawling into bed with guests, while others have reported unexplained cold spots and the sound of disembodied footsteps outside their windows as well as taps on the doors. Experience a chill down your spine as we take you to the site of one of USA Today’s Top Ten Haunted Hotels and learn about the spirits that give it this prestigious, petrifying honor.

A Hotel Fit For a King… In The Afterlife

The anger and hatred that resound from the soul of war can often still be felt and heard centuries after the bleeding has stopped. You see, for the victims of these barbaric times, the violence and bloodshed never really cease, as is the case with the souls trapped in the Battle House Renaissance Hotel.

Prepare to unveil a string of misfortune that turned this historic hotel into a haven for the dead. Built in 1852, the hotel was ahead of its time, offering amenities such as proper electrical lighting that drew in the nation’s elite. Stephen A. Douglas stayed at the hotel the night before his historic loss to President Abraham Lincoln, while Jefferson Davis and famed playwright Oscar Wilde took residence in the hotel.

Prior to this display of opulence, however, the site was home to a military base during the War of 1812. Though the fighting continues from the other side, it’s the spirit of the former Mardi Gras King, Mr. Henry Butler, Jr., that offers the most scares nightly. Mr. Butler would be another victim of violence, being murdered by the husband of one of his mistresses.

His ghost mingles with that of a bride who killed herself in the ballroom. But it’s the mysterious gray figure that causes the hair on guests’ arms to rise. The figure has been known to violently shake the beds, and it’s believed the entity is also responsible for the disembodied voice terrifyingly demanding they “Get Out!” A true horror of horrors at this luxurious establishment.

Why is Mobile so Haunted?

The sights and sounds of carnage.

Various parts of Mobile were exposed to the darkness that is war, leaving very few places safe from the devastation. Early settlers of the town constructed first in an attempt to protect the area from incoming attacks. One of these forts was Colonial Forte Conde, and though it’s evolved over the last few centuries, the spirits have always remained.

Port City Ghosts takes you to Fort Conde Inn, a collection of cottages that offer a quaint stay and a night of bone-chilling haunts. The death that occurred here all those years ago echoes in this enclosed getaway. Witnesses claim to hear disembodied voices throughout the Inn, with full-bodied apparitions appearing in the Autunez Cottage.

The eerie sound of footsteps, when no one is around, has been heard, and several guests have reported seeing a soldier staring out of the window of the cursed cottage. Keep your eyes peeled, as it’s not uncommon for the soldiers who perished during this brutal time to make an impromptu appearance.

The Haunted House on The Block

Most places with such significant ties to the development of the nation are bound to have a historic district within them. Mobile is one of these places, home to the historic De Tonti Square Historic District of Mobile. It’s one of two that were created to preserve downtown Mobile and consists of 44 homes, one of those being the infamously haunted Richards DAR House.

Venture to a piece of history, where one can experience the timelessness of the building and the spine-chilling unexplained activity that attracts ghost hunters and photographers looking to capture it. Though it now operates as a museum, the original family believes it to still be theirs. The phenomena in the former office were so strong that the Alabama Chapter of the Delta Paranormal Project was brought in to investigate.

Catching activity straight from a horror movie, the team picked up marbles being rearranged, seemingly moved by invisible hands. One photographer captured a shadowy figure that is known today as “Uncle Willie.” He’s also been seen sitting on a couch dressed in 19th-century clothing while other staff members have heard the creepy sound of children’s laughter with no known origin. The museum is open to the public on various days and times, but the spirits cause a scary stir 24 hours a day.

What’s So Special About the Port City Ghosts Tour?

See a different, more salacious side of this historic city.

Filled with beauty and charm, it’s hard to imagine that Mobile had such tumultuous beginnings. Fights over the territory never ceased, and the stench of death never left the air. Memorials and dedications to the resilience of the town and its defenders who continue to roam the grounds in their otherworldly form. One such dedication you’ll visit with Port City Ghosts is The Admiral Hotel, originally named after a controversial military figure that sits just a short distance from the USS Alabama – one of the most haunted ships in the nation.

Several deaths were reported aboard the USS Alabama, including two workers and at least eight killed by friendly fire. The terrifying sounds of disembodied footsteps can be heard inside the ship. Heavy steel hatches have been known to eerily shut on their own, and many feel as though they’re being watched while visiting the ship. The USS Alabama is another reminder of the tragedy and horror that are a part of Mobile’s past and that continues to haunt its present.
