Inside the Klingon D7 Class Battle Cruiser

Learn about the cruiser that became the pinnacle of combat warships in the 23rd Century.

star trek 2268

The Klingon D7 Class Battle Cruiser was the pinnacle of combat warships in the 23rd Century. The mainstay of the Imperial Klingon Fleet, the D7 inspired fear and capitulation throughout the quadrant. To go up against a fleet of D7 warships was to invite doom…

Cruiser Cutaway

At 228 meters long and a crew of around 430, it was not the largest ship of the time. However, this versatile vessel could take on many roles in addition to being a combat ship. It was quick and maneuverable with its S-2 Graf Unit propulsion system, similar to the Federation Starfleet’s Warp Drive. On several encounters with the U.S.S. Enterprise in the 2260’s, the D7 was used as a scout ship, able to slip in and out of the Enterprise ’s sensor range with ease.

star trek 2268

The D7 was heavily armed, featuring phasers, photon torpedos, and two nacelle mounted disruptor cannons. The cannons could fire extremely powerful disruptor bolts utilizing power directly from the ships engines. Their placement on the outer wings gave them a great range and wide field of fire. In concert with the forward photon torpedo launcher, the ship could produce a devastating frontal assault on its target.

A Conflict of Interests

The Enterprise and the Federation Fleet were about to find out how long they could survive against an armada of D7 cruisers in 2267 while in conflict over the planet Organia. The Klingon forces and their leader, Commander Kor, had landed on the planet, seizing control of an oddly docile group of people. Organia was a strategically perfect planet and the Klingons and Federation wanted it for themselves.

star trek 2268

As both fleets gathered to what what would have been the most destructive and costly war the quadrant had ever seen, the Organians had other plans. Through their non-corporeal powers, they seized both fleets and halted the conflict. Reluctant at first, both parties eventually agreed to cease hostilities. The full test of the D7 versus the Federation Constitution-Class in all out warfare was tabled, for now… (TOS: “ Errand of Mercy ”)

Klingons and Romulans Conspiring Together…

Another disturbing event for the Federation happened in 2268 when it was discovered that the Klingon Empire and the Romulan Star Empire had made an alliance. A few exchanges including the Romulans adding the far superior D7 to their fleet and the Klingons receiving the Romulan cloaking technology, rendering ships invisible to eyes and sensors, increased the Federation’s anxiety.

The Federation concocted a secret plan to capture one of the Romulan cloaking devices, now installed on the Romulan D7 cruisers brandishing the glorious Romulan Bird of Prey art. The Enterprise was once again sent into danger to acquire one of these precious devices. After Kirk’s plan had succeeded, the Enterprise warped as fast as it could back to the neutral zone as the Romulans gave chase. Just entering weapons range of the powerful disruptor cannons, the Enterprise suddenly disappeared. Chief Engineering Officer Montgomery Scott had been able to integrate the cloaking device into their systems and activate it just in time. The Romulan ship could have dealt significant damage to the Enterprise on the first volley of weapons, but they were too late. (TOS: “ The Enterprise Incident ”)

star trek 2268

Klingons and Starfleet Working Together

If the cloaking device could be integrated into the Enterprise ’s systems, then perhaps these two great ships were not as dissimilar as one might think. In 2269, the Enterprise and the I.K.S. Klothos , under the command of Kor, were able to combine their dwindling power systems in order to escape a pocket of null space in which they were trapped. The ships docked together to reach the speed of Warp 8 needed to break free of the null space pocket. (TAS: “ The Time Trap ”)

star trek 2268

“Kirk...Tribbles?”

Kor was not the only captain of one of these mighty ships. Two other Dahar Masters (the title of a legendary Klingon warrior) would also command the D7 , Kang and Koloth.

star trek 2268

Captain Koloth would encounter the Enterprise several times in the 2260’s. Two of note involved Sherman’s Planet, a world the Federation was attempting to develop. Koloth would meet Kirk at Deep Space Station K-7 with the I.K.S. Gr’oth . Koloth and a Klingon spy, Arne Darvin attempted to poison the grain bound for Sherman’s Planet, but were thwarted by one of the most hated, reviled, loathed villains of the Klingon Empire, Tribbles. (TOS: “ The Trouble With Tribbles ”)

star trek 2268

Tribbles would again play a role in foiling the plans of Captain Koloth. In 2269, the empire had developed a new starship projected stasis weapon which could render opposing ships completely inert. Koloth, now in command of the I.K.S. Devisor , proceeded to test the weapon against the Enterprise whilst it was distracted escorting two robot grain ships and after giving chase to the privateer, Cyrano Jones. Jones had previously been the cause and solution to the previous problems on K-7 . The projected stasis weapon was a great idea in theory, but in practice, it also immobilized the ship projecting the beam. All the power required to use it drained the ship itself. (TAS: “ More Tribbles, More Troubles ”)

star trek 2268

The D7 would eventually be refit into the venerable K’Tinga Class . The K’Tinga would continue on well into the next century, even taking part in the Dominion War. The legacy of the D7 would inspire many Klingon ship designs in the years to come, most all featuring a long neck with the command center at the end, wings with disruptor cannons, and a generally sleek, aggressive look.

Behind the Scenes

The D7 was designed by art director Matt Jefferies, designer of the original U.S.S. Enterprise . He “had to design a ship that would be instantly recognizable as an enemy ship, especially for a flash cut. There had to be no way it could be mistaken for our guys. It had to look threatening, even vicious.” The studio filming miniature was built by AMT, who would later produce a model kit.” (Matt Jefferies, Star Trek Sketchbook , 1997)

When Did The Klingons Acquire Cloaking Tech? 2268?

According to the official Star Trek page, the Klingons only had cloaking tech by 2268. http://www.startrek.com/database_article/cloaking-device-klingon This is to line up with Star Trek TOS and Kor's statements in his DS9 episode. http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Cloaking_device Was there are temporary alliance between Romulans and Klingons? When do you think Klingons acquired cloaking technology?

You're point? The Klingons do not have Cloak In DSC, One Klingon had it on two ships. Which the other Klingons found amazing and did not believe he had them. Where did he get them, we do not know. Sorry man, you are fishing and this is not a Canon Violation

The Romulans having the cloak in ENT was the all time worst canon violation in Star Trek for me. It contradicted a major plot point in Balance of Terror, one of Star Trek's best episodes, and it wasn't even really necessary as there are dozens ways ships can appear dramatically - such as just appearing from warp. But it looks like the cat is well and truly out of the bag in terms of cloaking now - anyone can have it. The pity of it is, that cloak isn't even used that well anymore - from being a brilliant excuse for tense submarine warfare in space, it's grown into a less and less pragmatic thing. I'm enjoying DSC - it would have been just as good without cloaking, but whatever, it's done anyway, and we can probably expect it in any era of Trek from now on.

They've changed a lot of things in DSC. Klingons were developing cloaks earlier than TOS in novels and comics for decades, though. And they were decloaking during Kelvin Kirk's Kobayashi Maru test too.

That forgettable TOS episode was the biggest violator of established canon - as USS Einstein says, ships approaching so fast or by such unknown means that they are suddenly on top of our heroes, "unseen until it's too late", is well established back in "Charlie X" already. So neither Kirk nor Spock is entitled to showing surprise at Romulan invisibility, let alone claiming that invisibility is a theoretical possibility only. That Klingons would not believe in cloaks pre-"Binary" is thankfully never indicated. ENT shows them witnessing invisibility, just like any space traveler sooner or later has to. They show definite interest in it, and in holoprojection tech. They no doubt struggle to obtain the tech. And ultimately, they succeed - but not by 2256 yet, as their holograms still aren't up to the TAS/TNG "holodeck" levels, and there's no imperial cloaking program underway yet. I guess individual Klingons could have acquired cloaks on several occasions in the centuries preceding DSC, but being so divided, would squander them in quests of personal glory. Romulans, supposedly being more methodical and totalitarian (despite being introduced in TOS as a culture of backstabbers), might hold on to this as such commonplace if a bit high-end galactic tech better and reverse-engineer and refine it to their primitive purposes. Humans, being newcomers, would not yet have had the time to secure cloaks from any source. And Vulcans wouldn't be telling. Timo Saloniemi

Seems hard to believe some Romulan cloaks found its way to the black market. Could those xenophobic Klingons buy one from any Romulan?
Why pay? Kirk stole one - so it can't be too hard! But Romulans are more likely to be buyers than sellers. Just a century later, cloaks are everywhere. For all we know, they always were, and just went unseen for certain pretty obvious reasons. Timo Saloniemi

Cygnus-X1.Net: A Tribute to Star Trek

Starfleet Starship Recognition Manual

This book probably really started somewhere in the late 1970's. Back then, I was a little tyke interested in the 'gee whiz' aspects of science fiction, particularly the ships and technology shown on Star Trek while it was in syndication. To whet my appetite even more, my uncle was a 'fictional technology' fan as well and had a large number of 'Starship' books, both official and not, from the early days of Star Trek's fandom. Needless to say, I got into them an awful lot, much to his chagrin. Of course, still as a little tyke, I was tracing the drawings from Franz Joseph's Technical Manual and making new ship designs of my own. I didn't know a thing about warp dynamics and all the other details now called 'Treknology'. I simply wanted to make a lot of new ships and have fun drawing them. Since that time, there's been a number of new Star Trek television shows, countless fan publications, role-playing games, and other odds and ends that helped flesh out the Trek universe I grew up with. And, naturally, there were more ships the fuel my imagination. (Several of those ships appear here.) So this book goes out to my uncle Mike, who was kind enough not only to put up with my getting into his cool things all the time, but for also encouraging me to dream and imagine, especially during those times I needed to look forward the most. It also goes out to both the creators of Star Trek, and the many fans who joined into the spirit of the series and the universe it presented with their own creative works. Thank you to all of you for filling a young boy's dreams.

Enterprise Rescue

The U.S.S. Enterprise , one of the most famous Starfleet ships of the 23rd century

The 23rd Century is a span of 100 Earth years that started in 2201 and ended in 2300. The century is defined by several conflicts among the powers of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants of the Galaxy . Despite constant threats, the United Federation of Planets faces an unprecedented growth and advancement of science and society.

The Star Trek “Origin” Movie Is Finally Going Into Production

The new Star Trek prequel movie is set to be revealed on the big screen. Probably.

LOS ANGELES - DECEMBER 1: Leonard Nimoy as Commander Spock (Mr. Spock) in the STAR TREK: The Origina...

For 30 years — from 1979 to 2009 — the longest wait between new Star Trek feature films was seven years. And, for most of that period, from the release of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) to Star Trek: Nemesis (2002), there was almost always a new Star Trek movie in theaters every two to four years. But after the wildly successful J.J. Abrams-directed reboot film in 2009, the release clip for Trek movies went from maximum warp to impulse power, to glacially slow. And now, by the time the next Star Trek movie hits theaters, it will have been about 10 years since the previous one — Star Trek Beyond — beamed into cinemas in 2016.

Since that time, for Trekkies, updates of a new Star Trek film have been very similar to the game football Lucy plays with Charlie Brown; just when a hypothetical movie sounds real, it gets snatched away. But now, there’s a glimmer of hope. Thanks to reports out of CinemaCon 2024, it looks like, the next Trek film is scheduled for release in either 2025 or 2026. But what’s it about? And will it really happen?

Star Trek 14 is “an untitled origin story”

Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto in 'Star Trek' (2009).

The new “origin story” will be set before the 2009 reboot. But how many decades before?

During CinemaCon 2024, Paramount confirmed several in-development projects including a live-action GI Joe / Transformers crossover (teased in 2023’s Rise of the Beasts ), a hardcore Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles live-action movie, a remake of the sci-fi thriller The Running Man (from Edgar Wright), the confirmation of an Avatar trilogy, and the assertion that a new Star Trek feature film will go into production this year, with a release date soon to follow.

Since 2016 to now, there have been at least five different attempts to make a new Star Trek film, either as timey wimey direct sequel to Beyond (“Star Trek 4”) a one-off space mobster movie (Quentin Tarantino’s script) or something else entirely (Noah Hawley and Matt Shakman’s attempts that remain undisclosed). But now, although Paramount is reportedly developing a sequel to Beyond — which would feature the reboot cast from the 2009 film one last time — the next Star Trek movie is not that sequel, but instead, as previously reported , an “origin story” that “takes place decades before the 2009 Star Trek film that rebooted the franchise.” This movie has been confirmed to be directed by Toby Haynes ( Andor, Doctor Who ) with a script from Seth Grahame-Smith ( The Lego Batman Movie , Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter) .

Wait? Wasn’t the 2009 film an “origin story?” While the answer to this question is technically a “yes,” the 2009 film (just titled Star Trek ) was also partially a time-travel sequel to the canon established in The Next Generation , and literally everything else in the Trek franchise up until that point. By saying the new prequel film takes place “decades before” the first reboot, this could hypothetically mean that the movie takes place in both the Prime and Kelvin timelines simultaneously.

TLDR: The Trek timeline diverged in the first reboot movie, beginning in the year 2233, so, a story set even a few decades before that divergence, in the 2210s or 2220s or earlier, would be consistent with all versions of Trek's future history. Presumably, the “origin story” won’t take place in the two decades between the prologue of the 2009 film (2233) and the main story (2258), because honestly, even for hardcore Trekkies that’s a big canon headache. So, sometime in the early 2200s, but before the 2230s is probably the best bet. And, even if the movie was set a bit earlier than that — say in the late 2180s or 2190s — we’d still be dealing with a very early point of Starfleet history that has never been depicted and that we know almost nothing about. Hence, if you squint — and don’t think about the prequel series Enterprise (2151-2161) too much — then yes, we’re looking at an origin story in which pretty much anything could happen.

Star Trek “origin” movie release date

LOS ANGELES - DECEMBER 1: The USS Enterprise during the opening credit for in the STAR TREK: The Ori...

One of the earliest shots of the USS Enterprise — from the 1964 Star Trek pilot episode “The Cage.” The new prequel film will likely be set half a century before this moment.

While some tweets out of CinemaCon seemed to indicate that the new Star Trek movie could hit next year in 2025 , TrekMovie confirmed that the “Untitled Star Trek Origin Story,” is on the Paramount slate for 2025 or 2026. TrekMovie also predicted that 2026 is more likely, writing, “If Paramount can move fast enough they could get the origin movie into theaters by 2026 — in time for Star Trek’s 60th anniversary.” Then again, 2025 is not impossible, it’s just cutting it a little close.

It should also be noted that the entire corporate entity of Paramount is reportedly close to a merger that would see it purchased by Skydance Media, the same production company behind the three existing J.J. Abrams-produced Star Trek reboots. If that deal is finalized soon, then, yes, this Star Trek feature film might actually happen very quickly. And if it doesn’t, there will still be plenty of new Star Trek shows streaming , not to mention the first direct-to-streaming standalone Star Trek movie, Section 31 , starring Michelle Yeoh, which will hit Paramount+ sometime later this year.

All the reboot Star Trek films (2009-2016) are currently streaming on Paramount+. The previous ten films (1979-2002) are all on Max.

Star Trek Origin Movie Officially Announced By Paramount For 2025 Release

  • Paramount Pictures announces new Star Trek movie for 2025, directed by Toby Haynes and written by Seth Grahame-Smith.
  • Chris Pine-led Star Trek 4 remains in development, while the new film is an origin story set decades before Abrams' 2009 movie.
  • Alongside the Star Trek origin movie, Paramount reveals a packed slate of exciting films for 2025-26 at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

Paramount Pictures officially announces the next Star Trek movie, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters in 2025. As reported in January, the next Star Trek movie isn't the long-delayed, Chris Pine-led Star Trek 4 produced by J.J. Abrams, which remains in development at Paramount. Rather, the next Star Trek movie is an origin story directed by Toby Haynes ( Star Wars: Andor ) and written by Seth Grahame-Smith (A braham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter ).

Screen Rant' s Rob Keyes (@rob_keyes) is at CinemaCon in Las Vegas where Paramount Pictures confirmed the next Star Trek movie , currently called Untitled Star Trek Origin Story , to be released in 2025. J.J. Abrams is also producing Untitled Star Trek Origin Story, which takes place decades before Abrams' Star Trek 2009 movie. See Rob Keyes' Tweet below:

Paramount also confirmed Untitled Star Trek Origin Story will begin production later this year for theatrical release in 2025.

Every Upcoming Star Trek Movie & TV Show

Star trek's new movies in theaters and paramount plus explained, star trek is finally making movies again.

After nearly a decade, Star Trek i s back to making movies. Star Trek on Paramount+ has created a television renaissance for the franchise, but the theatrical side of Star Trek overseen by Paramount Pictures has languished in development hell since Star Trek Beyond bowed in the summer of 2016. Toby Haynes' Untitled Star Trek Origin Story is yet another prequel, but as it's said to be set decades before Star Trek 2009, it could very well be set after Star Trek: Enterprise 's mid-22nd century voyages but otherwise be an origin story for both Star Trek 's Prime and alternate Kelvin timelines .

Meanwhile, J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 4 , which is the "final chapter" of the USS Enterprise crew led by Chris Pine's Captain James T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto's Spock, has seen some movement with a new screenwriter, Steve Yockey ( The Flight Attendant ), tackling the long-delayed sequel. Pine and his fellow Star Trek actors, including Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, and Sofia Boutella, have all expressed their eagerness to return if Star Trek 4 can come together.

It's a positive sign that Star Trek movies are finally coming back.

Paramount+ is making their own Star Trek movies, with the recently-wrapped Star Trek: Section 31 awaiting a release date. Starring Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh, Section 31 i s the first made-for-streaming Star Trek movie, and it is reportedly set during Star Trek 's "lost era" with connections to Star Trek: The Next Generation. Section 31 could get a sequel if successful, and the Star Trek: Picard spinoff dubbed Star Trek: Legacy may also become a streaming movie instead of a series. However all this shakes out, it's a positive sign that Star Trek movies are finally coming back.

A Star Trek Origin Movie Is Coming in 2025 From 'Andor' and 'Doctor Who' Director Toby Haynes

'Star Trek' (2009) director J.J. Abrams is attached to produce.

The Big Picture

  • A new Star Trek prequel film, an "origin story", is in development, at Paramount.
  • The Star Trek history before Kirk's missions on the Enterprise is largely unwritten, leaving room for creativity with the new film.
  • Director Toby Haynes, known for Andor , is working on the film alongside writer Seth Grahame-Smith; a 2025 release window was announced at CinemaCon.

Star Trek may finally be coming back to the big screen. A prequel to the 2009 J.J. Abrams reboot of the franchise is in the works from director Toby Haynes . The news comes from Paramount's presentation at CinemaCon today, as reported by Collider's Steve Weintraub and Britta DeVore . With Haynes, who recently helmed six episodes of the acclaimed Star Wars series Andor , at the rudder, the film will be written by Seth Grahame-Smith .

So far, other details on the new film are scarce, but it will reportedly be an "origin story", taking place decades before the 2009 Star Trek film, which took place in 2255. That likely means that it will not feature the cast from the 2009 reboot, which has so far been difficult for Paramount to wrangle together for a fourth film, despite numerous attempts to do so . That doesn't necessarily mean that a fourth movie isn't happening: back in March, Paramount hired The Flight Attendant scribe Steve Yockey to pen a new script for the film. For their part, the cast is game as well, with Zoe Saldaña recently stating her willingness to return for a fourth mission on the USS Enterprise .

What Happened Decades Before Kirk's First Missions on the Enterprise?

The history of the Star Trek universe prior to the celebrated voyages of the Enterprise is largely unwritten. The first starship Enterprise 's adventures in the 22nd century were chronicled on the UPN prequel series Star Trek: Enterprise . That series ended with the founding of the United Federation of Planets in 2161, which leaves almost a century of mostly unexplored history between that and the history now being charted on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (and the first two seasons of mothership show Star Trek: Discovery ).

At some point, the nascent Federation faces a devastating war against the Romulan Star Empire , while also engaged in a Cold War with the Klingons. The USS Enterprise will eventually be launched in the 23rd century, under the captaincy of Robert April, who has been briefly glimpsed on Star Trek: The Animated Series and Strange New Worlds , before being handed off to Christopher Pike . Apart from that, however, Haynes and Graeme-Smith have a near-blank canvas upon which to make their mark.

In addition to Andor , Haynes has also helmed episodes of Doctor Who , Sherlock , and Black Mirror ; his work on the latter series includes the episode " USS Callister ," a loving pastiche of Star Trek . Graeme-Smith wrote the novels Pride & Prejudice & Zombies and Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter ; he worked on the story for the upcoming horror comedy sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice .

A new Star Trek prequel film is in development; no date has yet been set beyond a 2025 release window . Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
