AVS has reviewed and updated the veterinary import conditions for dogs and cats entering Singapore. This ensures that Singapore’s veterinary import conditions are aligned with the international standards of the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH). Overall, the changes after the review will offer greater flexibility, clarity and ease for pet owners while ensuring sufficient safeguards are in place for our biosecurity.

The revised veterinary import conditions will be implemented with effect from 1 July 2024 and the public can submit applications for import licences based on the revised conditions from 1 July onwards.

There will be a 6-month adaptation period from 1 July 2024 to 31 December 2024 to give the public and industry time to adjust to the revised conditions.  During the 6-month adaptation period from 1 July to 31 December 2024, importers can choose to apply for licenses based on the previous conditions which can be found here .

Bringing a Dog into Singapore: Everything You Need to Know

Importing a Dog to Singapore

If you’re considering bringing your furry friend to Singapore, there are several important factors to consider. From understanding the import regulations to selecting a suitable breed and preparing the necessary documents, this article will guide you through the process of importing a dog to Singapore.

Understanding the Import Regulations

Before embarking on this journey, it’s crucial to familiarize yourself with Singapore’s import regulations for dogs. These regulations are in place to ensure the health and safety of both the animals and the local community. The Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) sets the guidelines, which include specific requirements such as quarantine periods, vaccinations, and microchipping.

Selecting a Suitable Breed

While Singapore welcomes a wide variety of dog breeds, it’s important to consider the suitability of the breed for the local climate and living conditions. Singapore’s tropical climate can be challenging for certain breeds with thick coats or respiratory issues. Researching and selecting a breed that can adapt well to Singapore’s climate will ensure the well-being of your dog.

Checking Eligibility

Before proceeding with the import process, it’s essential to confirm whether your dog is eligible to enter Singapore. Certain breeds, such as the American Pit Bull Terrier, are not allowed due to their classification as “dangerous dogs.” Additionally, dogs that are less than 16 weeks old, pregnant, or have recently given birth may face additional restrictions. Ensure that your dog meets the eligibility criteria before proceeding further.

Preparing the Necessary Documents

Importing a dog to Singapore requires a thorough documentation process. The documents you will need to prepare include a valid health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian in the country of origin, a vaccination record indicating up-to-date vaccinations, and an import permit obtained from the AVA. It’s essential to start this process well in advance to avoid any potential delays or last-minute complications.

Engaging a Licensed Importer

To streamline the import process and ensure compliance with all regulations, it’s advisable to engage a licensed importer. These professionals have expertise in navigating the complex import procedures and can assist you with the necessary paperwork, quarantine arrangements, and transportation. Working with a licensed importer will provide peace of mind and make the entire process more efficient.

Quarantine and Vaccinations

Mandatory quarantine period.

Upon arrival in Singapore, all dogs must undergo a mandatory quarantine period. This period typically lasts for 10 days and is an important measure to prevent the spread of diseases. During this time, your dog will be housed in a designated quarantine facility and closely monitored by AVA personnel. It’s vital to ensure that your dog is in good health and has received necessary vaccinations prior to entering quarantine.

Vaccinations and Microchipping

Before bringing your dog to Singapore, it’s essential to ensure that they are up to date with all required vaccinations. These vaccinations include rabies, distemper, parvovirus, and hepatitis. Additionally, microchipping your dog is mandatory. The microchip should be implanted before the rabies vaccination to ensure proper identification. This ensures that your dog can be traced back to you in case of any emergencies or lost pets.

Avoiding Quarantine for Returning Pets

If you are planning to bring your dog into Singapore after a temporary relocation, there is a possibility of avoiding the mandatory quarantine period. To qualify for exemption, your dog must meet certain criteria, including having previously resided in Singapore, receiving necessary vaccinations, and being in compliance with the AVA’s specifications. It’s advisable to consult with the AVA and provide all required supporting documents to determine eligibility for quarantine exemption.

Bringing a Dog into Singapore: Everything You Need to Know

Transportation and Travel Arrangements

Choosing an airline.

When it comes to transporting your dog to Singapore, selecting a reputable and pet-friendly airline is of utmost importance. Not all airlines have the necessary facilities and procedures in place to ensure the comfort and safety of your furry friend during travel. Research airlines that specialize in pet transportation and have dedicated staff trained in handling animals.

Booking a Flight for your Dog

Once you have decided on an airline, it’s time to book a flight for your dog. It’s advisable to book well in advance to secure a spot for your pet, as there may be limitations on the number of animals allowed on each flight. Inform the airline that you will be traveling with a pet, as they may have specific requirements or restrictions. Additionally, consider booking a direct flight to minimize stress for your dog and reduce the chances of delays or layovers.

Arranging for a Travel Crate

To ensure the safety and comfort of your dog during the journey, it’s essential to provide an appropriate travel crate. The crate should be airline-approved and meet the International Air Transport Association (IATA) standards. It should be well-ventilated, secure, and offer enough space for your dog to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. Acclimate your dog to the crate before the journey to reduce stress and anxiety.

Ensuring Comfortable Travel

To ensure a comfortable journey for your dog, consider their specific needs and preferences. Pack essential items such as food, water, a leash, bedding, familiar toys, and any necessary medications. Avoid feeding your dog too much before traveling to prevent digestive issues, but ensure they are hydrated. It’s also a good idea to exercise your dog before the journey to help them relax during the flight.

Accompanying your Dog or Hiring a Pet Transport Service

When traveling with your dog to Singapore, you have the option of accompanying them on the flight or hiring a pet transport service. If you choose to accompany your dog, familiarize yourself with the airline’s pet travel policies and ensure that you abide by all regulations. Alternatively, a pet transport service can handle all aspects of your dog’s transportation, including logistics, documentation, and coordination with the airline. Consider your personal circumstances and choose the option that best suits you and your dog.

Arriving in Singapore

Clearing customs and immigration.

Upon arrival in Singapore, you and your dog will need to clear customs and immigration procedures. Follow the instructions provided by the AVA and relevant authorities to ensure a smooth process. Present your dog’s import permit, vaccination records, and any other required documents for verification.

Paying Applicable Fees

Importing a dog to Singapore incurs certain fees that must be paid upon arrival. These fees include quarantine charges, inspection fees, and any additional charges imposed by the AVA. Be prepared to pay these fees in the local currency, and ensure that you have sufficient funds to cover all expenses.

Providing Health Certificates

During the customs clearance process, you will need to provide health certificates issued by a licensed veterinarian in your country of origin. These certificates should include details of vaccinations, microchipping, and any other relevant health information. Ensure that the certificates are accurate and up to date to avoid any complications during the clearance process.

Meeting Singapore’s Health and Safety Regulations

Singapore has rigorous health and safety regulations in place to protect its residents and animals. It’s important to familiarize yourself with these regulations and ensure that your dog meets all the necessary requirements. This includes having proper identification, being free from contagious diseases, and complying with import regulations. By adhering to these regulations, you contribute to maintaining the health and safety of both your dog and the local community.

PET MICROCHIPPING

All dogs and cats must be microchipped with an ISO 11784/11785 pet microchip that is a 15 digit and non-encrypted. Small mammals, birds, reptiles and horses do not require microchips.

A microchip is a small chip the size of a grain of rice that holds a unique number which can be detected by a microchip scanner. It is implanted just under your pet’s skin in between its shoulder blades.

This should be the first step you take. This is because your pet’s microchip must be implanted before its rabies vaccination is administered, otherwise the vaccination will not count. We will discuss the rabies vaccination in detail in the next section.

Your pet’s microchip number must be present on all documentation required to enter Singapore. Your veterinarian must scan your dog or cat’s microchip before any tests or treatments required to enter Singapore.

Sadly, not all pets will be allowed into Singapore. This is because the pest or disease risks associated with importation may be considered too great and pose as a threat to Singapore’s wildlife.

SMALL ANIMALS

Requirements for taking small animals to Singapore are as follows:

  • Parasite treatment
  • Veterinarian certificate
  • Import license
  • Border control inspection
  • 2 weeks in quarantine

Small animals do not require microchips or rabies vaccinations. However, they will need to be treated for parasites and must show no signs of disease. This must all be shown in an official Singapore Veterinary Certificate.

Furthermore, you must have kept your small mammals as a pet continuously since birth, or for six months immediately before importing them to Singapore.

You must apply for an import license, and make an appointment for border control inspection at either the Changi Animal & Plant Quarantine Station or Tuas Checkpoint.

Small animals must stay at least 2 weeks in Singapore pet quarantine upon arrival. You must book this in advance online at the  Quarantine Management System (QMS) .

For further information check Singapore’s government website here .

Ornamental birds are birds intended for all other purposes besides consumption. These include pet birds, and birds for breeding. Examples of ornamental birds are guinea fowls, partridges, parrots, parakeets, budgerigars, cockatoos, doves, peafowls, swans, and finches.

Each imported horse is also required that to have an equine passport, which contains the horse’s silhouette and updated vaccination records.

Your horse must be accompanied by a declaration signed by the master of the ship or the captain of the aircraft.

REPTILES AND AMPHIBIANS

Sadly, reptiles and amphibians cannot be imported to Singapore as pets.

The only reptiles you are allowed to bring into Singapore as pets are the Red-Eared Slider ( Trachemys scripta elegans ) and Malayan box turtle ( Cuora amboinensis ).

What dog breeds are not allowed into Singapore?

It’s important to be aware that sadly a number of “fighting” breeds are not permitted within Singapore. At present the following breeds are banned:

  • American Pit Bull Terrier (also known as American Pit Bull and Pit Bull Terrier)
  • American Staffordshire Terrier
  • Staffordshire Bull Terrier
  • American Bulldog
  • Crosses of these and other breeds
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Fila Brasileiro
  • Neapolitan Mastiff
  • Perro De Presa Canario
  • Crosses of any of the above breeds

What cat breeds are not allowed into Singapore?

  • First to forth generation of Bengal cats (or crosses)
  • First to forth generation of Savannah cats (or crosses)

If you are the owner of a Bengal or Savannah cat, you will need to provide proof that they are at least a fifth generation cross from their ancestral stock.

The process of importing pets to Singapore can take between 1-12 months to complete. This depends on the species of your pet, and where you are traveling from.

If you are traveling from a Category A country the time scale will be shorter. This is because they will not require rabies blood tests or import permits. However, if you are traveling from a country in Category B, C or D , it will likely take you longer to import your pet to Singapore.

The most timely steps of importing pets to Singapore, are getting your pet’s rabies blood test results back, and then applying for an import permit.

Getting your pet’s microchip, vaccinations and parasite treatments will just take a quick appointment to the vet. The appointment should take no more than half an hour.

As mentioned above, your pet’s rabies blood test will be one of the most timely steps. This is because you must wait at least three to four weeks after your pet’s rabies vaccination, before taking its blood sample. Firstly, it can take up to 30 days to get your pet’s blood test results back. Secondly, you may have to wait 6 months after getting your pet’s rabies vaccination, before they can have their rabies titer test (if traveling from a Category D country).

Furthermore, the process of getting an import permit can be lengthy. The majority of permit applications are processed and decided within 20 days. However, in more complex cases, the process takes longer. This will be even lengthier if you are importing a dog to Singapore, as you will need to apply for a dog license before applying for your import license.

Lastly, if your pet will need to stay in Singapore pet quarantine, you will need to make reservations at least 3 months ahead of entry.

Pets traveling from Category A or B countries will not be subjected to Singapore pet quarantine. However, pets traveling from Category C or D countries may be subject to a quarantine period upon arrival.

All quarantine is served in the Sembawang Animal Quarantine Station.

Don’t worry, quarantine isn’t as scary as it sounds. Pets will have great caretakers and special food/medication accommodations if your pet needs it.

As there is just one center, we advise that you make reservations for your pet as soon as you receive your pet’s import permit. You will need to do this at least 3 months prior to planned pet import to Singapore. You can make reservations through the Quarantine Management System (QMS) .

The length of your pet’s stay in quarantine depends on which country category you are traveling from:

  • Category A or B – your pet will not require a stay in Singapore pet quarantine.
  • Category C – dogs and cats must be quarantined for either 10 days or 30 days. If the rabies titer test was completed 4 months prior to import, then your pet will need to stay at least 10 days (C1). However, if the test was completed less than 4 months prior to import or if if your pet has been re-vaccinated, then your pet will need to stay for at least 30 days (C2)
  • Category D – all dogs and cats must stay in Singapore pet quarantine for at least 30 days.

Check which category your home country is in here .

Small pets must be quarantined for 2 weeks upon arrival.

Importing pets to Singapore can be a rather expensive process which varies depending on your pet’s species and where you are traveling from. The total cost broken down into the following fees:

  • Vet fees – microchipping, vaccinations and treatments varies on your vet practice fees and home country.
  • Airline fees for shipping a pet – varies widely depending on size and species of your pet, and airline.
  • Dog license – fee breakdown below.
  • Import license – fee breakdown below.
  • Quarantine fees – fee breakdown below.
  • Government endorsements – varies depending on home country.

What airlines allow flying a pet to Singapore?

Most airlines allow flying a pet to Singapore. However, depending on the airline you fly with, pet policies differ.

When flying with a pet, it’s important to check airline pet policies before booking any travel. Different airline’s have different rules for flying with pets, including which breeds are allowed, the size and weight of pets that are permitted, and the number of dogs they allow. Fees also vary between airlines.

Most airlines will allow pets to fly in the cargo section of their planes, in a climate controlled, comfortable pet zone. Although some pet owners think this will be stressful for their dogs, it can actually be a lot calmer than flying in the cabin.

Some airlines will allow pets to fly in the cabin with their owners, but generally only small dogs that weigh under 8kg are permitted. This is because pets must fly inside an airline-approved carrier that fits under the seat in front of their owners.

For a list of airlines that allow pets to fly in the cabin with their owners, check:

Guidelines for Pet Carriers

If you are flying to Singapore with a pet, it is important that you use a pet carrier that is approved by your airline. Different airlines have different pet carrier policies, which often vary between aircrafts and routes. Check that your pet carrier is approved for your chosen airline, aircraft and route.

The rules and regulations have been set out by International Air Transport Association (IATA) ensure that dogs are comfortable when travelling. Thus, inside their travel carriers, pets must be able to stand up, turn around and lie down in a natural position in their kennel (without touching any side or the top of the container).

Furthermore, the rules for pet carriers also vary depending on whether your pets will be flying in the cabin or cargo area of the plane.

If you are travelling in the cabin with your pet, then you will need to ensure that the carrier fits under the seat in front of you. This is why, generally, only small dogs and cats weighing under 7-8kg are permitted in the cabin.

Additionally, if traveling with a dog, airlines often require that they are obedient to your commands and behave appropriately in public. Thus, he mustn’t bark or growl at other passengers or staff. If your dog does not behave in an appropriate manner, some airlines may transfer him to the cargo hold at an additional cost, or refuse to transport him all together. Some airlines require a consent form to ensure your pet is flight-ready.

Frequently Asked Questions [FAQs]

Yes, puppies and kittens at least 16 weeks old, traveling from Category A (no-risk rabies) countries are permitted to travel to Singapore. However, dogs and cats must be at least 7 months of age to be permitted to enter Singapore from any other country. Dogs must be 3 months old to get their rabies vaccinations. You must then wait at least 1 month before getting your rabies titer test, the results of which can take 3 months to get back.

You can travel to Singapore with an EU Pet Passport, however there are additional conditions to be met. You will need to apply for an Import Permit and organise your pet to stay in quarantine on arrival. Your pet may also need additional vaccines, treatments and a rabies titer test. Please refer to the requirements section above.

Possibly. You may be able to move to Singapore with your pet, as long as you and your pet meet strict requirements. If you are from a Category A country, the process will likely be more simple. However those wanting to relocate to Singapore from another country, will have a more lengthy and difficult process to go through. This is because there are additional requirements and conditions to be met.

Bottom Line

So, importing a pet to Singapore can be a complicated process. It is particularly complicated if you are traveling from a country other than those listed as a Category A (no-risk of rabies) country.

If you haven’t been put off, just be sure to familiarise yourself with the conditions you need to meet to bring your pet to Singapore.

Allow yourself plenty of time to prepare for your trip, even up to 1 year in more complicated cases! If this process seems too complicated, you can always get in contact with special pet travel agencies.

7 Pet Taxis You Must Try in Singapore (and tips on preparing your pet for a ride)

Pet Taxis are specially made for pets and they've been around helping pet owners move here and there in Singapore since the 1990s! Whether it’s a ride to the vet, dog runs , grooming shops, pet cafes , pet schools, or you just wanna head outdoors , pet taxis offer comfortable, safe, relaxed and stress-free experience for you and your pets.

Why choose a pet taxi?

  • It’s a better alternative if you don’t have a car or if you’re unable to drive.
  • It guarantees transport. Regular taxis or hail apps can reject your ride since not all drivers would want to deal with shedding fur and toilet accidents. Public transportation like buses and trains are not even options.
  • Vehicles are outfitted to cater to your pet’s needs. Special equipments such as seat covers and carriers are provided by some pet taxi services.
  • Driver is pet-friendly. Usually, pet taxi drivers are pet owners or pet lovers themselves and they know how to deal with animals.
  • It may be pricey but you’re getting your money’s worth.

RydePet is a pet-friendly carpooling option where you can ride with 2 medium pets OR 1 large pet. You can bring any common household pets such as dogs, cats, rabbits, turtles, hamsters, birds in cages and fish in bowls or plastic bags. Any other arrangements are at the driver’s discretion. If your pet soils the car, a cleaning fee of up to $70 will be charged. No insurance is covered for the pets.

Tips on preparing your pet for a ride

1. Make sure that your pet wears a collared ID or tag with your contact details.

2. Invest in a pet safety belt to clip into the harness to keep your pet safe and securely strapped in with the seat belt.

3. Pet booster seat is helpful when you’re carrying a smaller dog. It’s water-proof so you don’t have to worry about toilet accidents or carrying your dog covered in mud inside your car.

4. If you have a dog with car sickness or weak bladders, getting a seat cover may be useful. This is a hammock-style cover that also help your seats clean and free from fur.

5. When you have a medium to large dogs, it’s ideal to carry them in a crate inside an SUV for more safety.

6. While not all riders go the extra mile with offering hygiene products, it’s still safe to bring your own sanitary must-haves such as tissues, poo bags, diapers, pet-friendly cleaning spray, hand sanitiser or hand wipes, paw washer and towels.

"The people you used at each step were wonderful. The girl who picked him up in Houston was wonderful. The man who delivered him here in Dubai – equally great. I know this is something you and your team do on a regular basis – but obviously this isn’t something we do – and to have our little dog with us here in our new home in Dubai makes our apartment here, our home! Of course, I shall recommend you to anyone wishing to fly a pet – and when it’s time for us to fly home, I’ll be in touch."

"Greg and I wanted to thank you very much for all your work to get Pepper safely back to Australia.I know that we bombarded you guys with a lot of anxious emails at one of your busiest times of the year. We wanted to put on the record that we sincerely thank you for all your guidance and patience with us, and especially for taking on Pepper’s move at a time when we were having trouble getting traction with another service provider – you got us back on track, and very quickly."

"A very BIG thank you to you all! The trio arrived safe and sound this morning around 2am and they were absolutely fine. They seem to have settled well into their new home as if nothing ever happened. I so appreciate all the hard work, care and professionalism that made this relocation happen. 'Starwood' is on my top list of favourites and shall make sure everyone that is ever wanting to relocate pets shall know about you all!"

"Thank you very much for your help in getting Cricket here. We are so happy to have him here and he is settling in. Of course the journey was long but he is now back to being his usual self. You really did make the entire process very smooth and easy and we never had to worry about anything. Thanks a lot!"

"Samantha is doing quite well. We were very pleased with your service. She is a very important member of our family and we were very stressed about her being on such a long flight. Thanks to all the personal assistance you gave me to prepare her, everything turned out better than we could have expected. If we should ever need to fly out pet again, I can’t imagine using any other service. I would highly recommend Starwood Animal Transport to everyone!"

"I would like to thank you for the wonderful service transporting our four legged kids. It was not just transporting, your updates, the photos and most of all for that moment of happiness when they arrived. Priceless!"

"All went very well and my parents and aunt were impressed with the care and organization of the people they met on each end. Thanks so much! Gigi is settling in and has no issues with her crate after the trip."

"Blake and Raven had a wonderful journey. I don't think the trip phased them in the least. They are happily settled and enjoying life in Georgia. Kenny did a wonderful job taking care of them both. He was very conscience and caring, and made sure they were fine before leaving. I will definitely recommend your business to anyone needing to relocate their pet family."

"Thanks to Starwood Animal Transport, our first experience moving our dog internationally was a very successful one! The communication throughout the entire process was prompt, clear and comforting. Kudos to Ross, Sherry and Nick for providing great customer service.I do believe that in the end, our dog had better care and travel arrangements than we did. I highly recommend Starwood and will certainly use them again in the future."

"After getting our family back (2 Goldens) from NY to London Gatwick I have to congratulate you and your global team for achieving what is no small achievement. Your service in managing the paperwork, the customs clearance, selecting the best airline and route and hand holding the vets through this timely but critical process was, I am sure the only reason everything went through without delay or undue stress. Thanks to you and to all of your team. You are a service benchmark."

Taking Pets to Signapore

  • Pet Travel to UAE
  • Taking Pets to Hong Kong
  • Taking Pets to India
  • Taking Pets to Japan
  • Taking Pets to Singapore

Taking pets to Singapore from the UK is a very commonly completed journey. There are many direct routes for flying a dog UK to Singapore or a cat UK to Singapore. Many people travel from the UK to Singapore for work purposes, and they take their pets with them.

PetAir UK can supply as much or as little of this process as you wish for taking pets to Singapore from the UK. PetAir UK can offer all you need from your front door in UK to your front door in Singapore. PetAir UK can supply crates, flight routings, veterinary documents, import permit and clearance and delivery in Singapore.

Flying a dog or cat to Singapore gives you the choice of using Singapore Airlines and British Airways mainly, both of whom are experts in Singapore pet travel and have direct flights to Singapore.

In terms of veterinary preparation, the first thing which needs to be done is that your pets need to be microchipped with an ISO standard microchip. The second thing to consider is that your pets have to be vaccinated. Cats over 16 weeks old need to be vaccinated with Flu and Enteritis at least 2 weeks before any intended flight date. Cats under 16 weeks old need to be vaccinated against Flu and Enteritis twice with 2 vaccinations at least 3 weeks apart and the second one needs to be at least 2 weeks before flight. For dogs over 16 weeks old, they need their full regular vaccinations (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus) at least 14 days before the flight. For dogs under 16 weeks old, the dogs need to have 2 vaccinations at least 4 weeks apart and the second vaccination needs to be at least 2 weeks before the flight. For flying a dog UK to Singapore especially, it is hard to get them flown under 16 weeks old with the timescales stipulated by the Singapore authorities.

Once the vaccinations are all completed then the copies of the vaccination cards are needed to be presented to the Singapore government, they are inspected and then the import permit can be issued to allow flying a pet UK to Singapore.

For Singapore pet travel, you will need to have APHA export documents completed. These need to be applied for from APHA and they will be sent directly to your vets. Dogs and cats need to be treated with an anti tick treatment between 2 and 7 days before the flight, and treated against internal parasites between 2 and 7 days before the flight date. They also need a full health check with an official veterinarian (UK government registered vet) within 7 days of the flight and have the export documents completed. These export documents are needed for flying a pet UK to Singapore.

On landing after flying a dog or cat UK to Singapore, pets from UK are taken to the quarantine area there and then released from there. There is no quarantine for dogs and cats flying from UK to Singapore. It is not quite as simple as just turning up at the quarantine area and collecting your pets. Your pets need to be cleared form a customs point of view. You will need to apply for a dog licence for your dog before you leave the airport to ensure that your newly resident dog is registered with the authorities. There are more details about the collection procedure here  . Clearing your own pets is possible, but difficult and you need to be in Singapore before your pets land, it is much easier to use an agent to help you with this.

A summary of the collection procedure is as follows. You present your AVA import licence and your passport to allow yourself into the cargo complex. Go to the cargo office of the relevant airline with a copy of the airway bill number for your pets, then collect all docs from the relevant airline desk. You then take these docs around to the AVA CAPQ office for inspection and clearance.

These details are lifted from the  AVA website , but don’t take into account the customs clearance part and the import fees which often need to be paid.

Or you can hand it all over to the experienced and knowledgeable team at PetAir UK who fly around 10 – 20 pets to Singapore each month, so we can offer a very simple solution to your pet flying concerns. Get in touch with us today here .

Singapore Pet Travel Guide: Frequently Asked Questions and Expert Advice

singapore pet travel spotlight part one

Relocating your pet to Singapore can be daunting, especially when managing the details of your move. But don't worry—proper preparation and expert guidance can ensure a seamless transition for you and your furry friend.

Welcome to the first installment of our Singapore Pet Travel Spotlight , where we answer your most pressing questions about Singapore pet import and provide valuable insights from our pet relocation experts. Let's embark on this journey together, and as always, feel free to contact us for personalized assistance with your pet's relocation.

What are the requirements for moving pets to Singapore?

As a rabies-free country, Singapore enforces stringent pet import regulations. To ensure a smooth relocation, start researching well in advance. Familiarize yourself with Singapore's official pet import requirements , including quarantine durations and specific rules based on your country of origin. To get started, look at the to find out what category your country falls under (this will determine your timeline and several other details, including how many days your pet needs to spend in quarantine, if any).

Will My Pet Require Quarantine in Singapore?

Yes, most pets entering Singapore must undergo quarantine for at least 10 days at the official quarantine station. Some pets may require up to 30 days of quarantine, depending on the country of origin. Rest assured; the quarantine facility is clean, secure, and pet-friendly. Read more about Singapore quarantine conditions here .

How Can I Ensure My Pet's Safe Flight?

The first thing you can start doing is crate training your pet. As soon as you know you're moving, buy your travel crate (making sure it's the right size and airline approved) and help your pet get used to spending time in it (here are our standard pet crate training tips ). Additionally, it's important to choose a pet-friendly airline and check in with your vet about any health or behavior-related questions or concerns you have. It's natural to feel anxious about helping your furry family member travel safely, but the more you know, the more you'll see that pet travel can be safe and uneventful when the right choices are made.

Can My Pet Travel in the Cabin with Me?

This one is complicated -- generally, pets flying internationally must travel via cargo (we recommend choosing a pet-friendly airline like KLM, United, Lufthansa, or British Airways), as this makes the trip safe and easy to manage as possible. Singapore does allow some small pets to travel in the cabin, but there are some tricky aspects to arranging this in terms of clearing customs upon arrival. Either way, your Pet Relocation Consultant can guide you through this process to plan your pet's most streamlined and comfortable flight.

When Should I Start Planning My Pet's Relocation?

Singapore mandates a Rabies Titer Test, extending the planning timeline to 3-6 months. Exercise patience and flexibility, especially during peak seasons when quarantine reservations may be limited. Start early to secure pet-friendly housing and other arrangements.

What Is the Cost of Pet Relocation to Singapore?

The cost includes a pet flight, airline-approved travel crate, veterinary visits, vaccines, boarding (if needed), airport transportation, and quarantine fees. It varies based on pet size, origin city, and other factors. Your Pet Travel Consultant will provide a detailed quote and share a few details; they'll be able to offer a ballpark estimate and then a precise quote.

This is Part One of PetRelocation's Singapore Pet Travel Spotlight . Follow along with the rest of the series, and contact us if you're ready to start discussing your pet's move logistics.

Family-friendly guide to jb: things to do, jb hotels & best cafes.

Travel

Planning a trip to Johor Bahru, Malaysia with the kids? Here are all the best things to do in JB, from visiting Austin Heights Adventure Park and dog cafes in Mount Austin to the best family JB hotels, and tips for the journey from Singapore to JB

There are so many fun things to do in Johor Bahru (JB) with kids that it’s no wonder so many families head here for the school holidays or for a long weekend! Plus the ease of getting to JB from Singapore (if you time it right!) feels almost like a staycation . Add in the enticing exchange rate and amazing food scene and you’ll want to make getaways to JB a regular thing. But toss a baby into the equation, and suddenly, what should be a breeze can feel like a puzzle. Think extra baggage, fretting over potential diaper dilemmas at customs (or worse, in the middle of a traffic jam!), not to mention battling the heat and all its associated irritations.

Our recent 2D1N excursion to JB with our 5-month-old was nothing short of an adventure! If you’re gearing up for a similar journey with your little one – we’ve got you covered with an authentic, tried-and-tested guide to JB. From accessible, family-friendly things to do in JB to must-eat local delights and hip JB cafes, consider this your roadmap to fuss-free travels in JB with your kids in tow.

Best malls in JB

things to do in jb

Johor Bahru’s malls are convenient one-stop destinations offering great shopping and many amenities, from dining options to entertainment and of course essential facilities like bathrooms. Malls closer to JB customs, such as City Square Mall and Komtar JBCC, boast diverse offerings, where you’ll find everything from convenience stores and indoor playgrounds to trendy restaurants, ice cream cafes, cinemas, and bookstores, all within easy reach.

For those willing to travel a little further, larger malls like Paradigm Mall and Mid Valley Southkey await, where you can find an array of entertainment options, including family-friendly cinemas, go-kart arenas, arcades, indoor playgrounds and even an ice skating rink at Paradigm mall! Their popular ice-skating rink sees large crowds especially during the peak periods but its sizeable space ensures your little ones can skate safely. You can also rent the skating aid, socks and gloves from just RM 7 (~ $2)!

JB malls are also where you can get items much cheaper compared to Singapore. Personally, I love getting my beauty and skincare essentials at stores such as Watsons, Guardian, Bath and Body Works and even Keihl’s! Items such as cleansers, moisturisers and even shampoo are cheaper, with a difference from $5 to $50! Household, baby and kid items are also cheaper in JB. For example, Little Genius in JB is a one-stop centre for all baby items. Think diapers, apparel, toys, snacks and even formula milk!

There are over 18 rides to choose from, including its iconic merry-go-round. While Danga Bay Theme Park is currently permanently closed, there are several other parks that you can visit. Some of our favourites are EnerG X park (Sunway Big Box), X Park Sunway Iskandar and more!

Best food in JB: Cafes, Restaurants & More

Just like us, our friends across the causeway are major foodies too. In recent years, there’s been a noticeable rise in stylish and uniquely themed cafes popping up around JB’s city centre. It could be driven by the sharp increase in tourism since the pandemic. JB offers a wide variety of cafes, from those serving delicious pastries and hearty meals to adorable animal cafes. Dedicating one full day of just cafe-hopping sounds like a plan!

The Cool Cat Ice Cream

Travelling from Singapore to Johor Bahru (JB)

There are plenty of transportation options from Singapore to JB. Although, your journey is almost always accompanied by notorious traffic jams. But before diving into the journey, the crucial decision lies in selecting your entry checkpoint.

Tuas VS Woodlands Checkpoint

things to do in jbcustoms

To start your journey, you have two entry points into JB: the Tuas Checkpoint and the Woodlands Checkpoint. Opting for the Tuas Checkpoint, also dubbed CIQ 2nd Link, typically means smoother traffic flow and faster customs clearance. However, keep in mind that choosing Tuas Checkpoint will place you farther from the city centre, AKA where all the best restaurants, cafes, and hotels in JB are!

On the other hand, Woodlands Checkpoint directs you straight to the heart of the city, which is also why it is the more popular choice for travellers. Additionally, Woodlands Checkpoint has a cheaper toll fee for cars and offers more spacious facilities, making it convenient for travelling with bulky luggage or needing currency exchange.

Transport from Singapore to JB: By Car

Driving into JB with the kids means they can relax in the cool comfort of an air-conditioned car, armed with snacks and entertainment to keep them occupied. Of course, there’s always the hope for a tantrum-free journey and a respite from the inevitable “Are we there yet, Mama?” inquiries. One crucial item to have on hand is the Touch ‘n Go Malaysia card for smooth toll payments.

Transport from Singapore to JB: By Train

Travelling from Singapore to JB by train is undeniably the most comfortable, quickest, and cost-effective option – that is, if you manage to snag a ticket! Train tickets from Singapore to JB are in high demand and tend to sell out rapidly. You’ll have to book as early as a month in advance. However, if you’re fortunate enough to secure tickets, the boarding process at Woodlands Checkpoint is seamless, and the journey itself takes a mere 5-10 minutes. Plus, you’ll breeze through JB customs with significantly shorter queues.

Transport from Singapore to JB: By Public Transport

things to do in jb

If you’re like me, where last-minute plans leave you without comfortable private transportation options, you can enter JB via public transport as your Plan B.

You can take a bus to the checkpoint, where you’ll pass through Singapore customs first before boarding a bus to JB. For families with young children or babies, queueing at the manual counter can take 20-30 minutes. Once you go through customs, you’ll queue for the bus to go to JB customs. In my experience, buses arrive swiftly, with conductors often prioritising families with little ones. However, be prepared for potential traffic jams on the causeway and long queues at JB customs, especially during peak periods, where wait times can stretch from a mere 10 minutes to a staggering three hours. Try to arrive early, like really early, if travelling during peak times.

Tips for a fuss-free family trip to JB

  • Always budget extra travel time during your journey to and from JB (and mental readiness) for any potential tantrums or diaper mishaps. If you’re travelling with a baby, ensure you have a bottle of milk on hand for feeding time emergencies. For older kids bring snacks and be prepared with books or a screen to keep them busy.
  • Tune into live traffic streams of the causeways before hitting the road to gauge the expected duration of your journey to JB from Singapore.
  • Some malls in JB do not have baby rooms and even changing tables. It’s always good to research the place you’re going to prevent last-minute franticness!
  • Given Malaysia’s scorching weather, especially if you plan to spend a lot of time outdoors, don’t forget to pack a fully charged portable fan and hats to keep cool and comfortable.

You’re all set! Now you’re all ready to have a fun trip with the fam to JB!

Bark Air, a New Airline Specifically For Dogs Takes First Flight

dog travel singapore

BARK Air, a luxury airline for dogs, officially launched earlier this week.

A joint venture between dog toy company BARK and Talon Air, a New York-based jet charter service, BARK Air allows dog owners to travel with their furry friends ‘in comfort and its style’.

BARK AIR’s first flight, traveling from New York to Los Angeles, took off on May 23. The flight carried six canines of varying breeds from a Golden Retriever to small Chihuahuas, and 11 humans (both travelers and crew).

She added that several of the dogs on the flight were friends and played with each other, while others took long naps. She said there were no accidents on board nor was there any stolen food.

Despite the cost of the tickets ($6,000 for one dog and one human), the flight was completely sold out. Tickets for their next flight in June is also filling up quickly.

A Subsidiary of BARK

BARK Air is a subsidiary of BARK, the dog toy company known for its subscription service BarkBox. Matt Meeker, the CEO and Co-founder of the company said he’s been working toward an airline for dogs for more than a decade.

In recent years, airlines have also tightened their restrictions for emotional support animals on board. This, along with the cost of travel, has become an issue for many families who do not want to leave their furry friends behind when moving or relocating.

Meeker said in a phone interview that they think of themselves as selling ‘awesome experiences with your dog’ rather than ‘seats on an airplane.’

How Much Does It Cost?

BARK Airline flights are not exactly cheap. For flights between New York and Los Angeles, it costs $6,000 for one human and one dog in each direction. They also offer one-way flights between New York and London for $8,000.

While Meeker acknowledged the high cost, he hopes the price will come down over time, as it’s usually seen with new innovations. He also said they have ‘clear ways of bringing the costs down if there is demand’ and that that is what they will be doing as they want to make the airline accessible and affordable for as many pups as possible.

Flight Accommodations

Every dog on BARK Air is given chicken broth champagne in bowls and leashes as seat belts. As for the bathroom, the pups can go anywhere; the crew will be there to clean up after them. The plane is also thoroughly cleaned between each flight.

The aircrafts can also accommodate 14 humans, though the company is currently capping them at 10 so there will be extra room on the flights. While the airline has no dog breed or size restrictions, humans accompanying the dogs must be at least 18 years old.

Prior to each flight, the airline will conduct a ‘pup intake’ to learn about the canine’s preferences and temperament. On the day of flying, owners and pups are advised to come one hour early to the terminal, from which they will be able to walk onto the plane after presenting an ID.
