How to survive a harsher Tamriel in the Anniversary Edition.

Survival Mode in Skyrim is a particularly unforgiving experience, but for players who like a challenge, it's a great way to experience something new in the 2021's Anniversary Edition.

This page explains everything you need to know about Survival Mode in Skyrim, such as how to enable Survival Mode , survival mode differences - including changes to travel and camping - as well as our Skyrim survival mode tips .

A feature which ties nicely into the addition of survival mode is fishing - which you can also use in a non-survival mode playthrough.

Survival mode can be found in the Settings are of the menu, by selecting Gameplay then enabling Survival Mode.

If it is not in the settings, then you are likely in a new save - and you have to complete the tutorial of Skyrim first.

Once you complete the 'Unbound' intro quest with either Hadvar or Ralof, you'll receive a pop-up notification about Survival Mode. It gives you a brief explanation on what to expect from the mode: such as you needing to eat, to be more wary about catching diseases, the need to sleep, etc before asking you whether you want to enable it or not. If that sounds like fun, you select yes.

From there on out, you'll be playing Skyrim on Survival Mode - which means it's a fair bit harder, but who doesn't love a good challenge?

Nonetheless, if Survival Mode turns out to be too difficult, it's easy to turn off. Head to Settings, go to Gameplay and you'll be able to disable it without having to worry about any consequences.

The opposite of this is also true, as you're able to enable Survival Mode on any previous saves you have started or imported into the Anniversary Edition.

Survival Mode in the Anniversary Edition is a new, exciting way to make your time in the continent of Skyrim a little more challenging and fun.

When enabling Survival Mode, players will need to meet certain requirements in order not to get sick and die. These requirements are: be well-fed, warm, physically well, and well-rested.

fast travel survival mode skyrim

However, these requirements won't always be easy to meet as Survival Mode puts a heapload of restrictions on you. These are:

  • No Fast Travel: You want to just do a quick trip to Riften to pick up something you forgot? That's no longer possible in Survival Mode. You'll have to walk!
  • Reduced Carry Weight: Skyrim's carry weight restrictions are already pretty unforgiving at times, this makes it so you really do need to just pack the essentials.
  • Level Up via Sleeping: In vanilla Skyrim you can level up wherever and whenever, but here you can only do so after you sleep.
  • Reduced Stamina/Mana: If you're hungry, cold or fatigued, you'll suffer from a reduction of Stamina or Mana, represented by the darkening of the Stamina/Mana bar.
  • Warm/Cold Meters: Depending on whether you're hot or cold, you'll be shown a Snowflake or a Sun at the top of your HUD. This can affect you to the point you can die if you don't cool down or get warm.
  • Health: When in Survival Mode, health doesn't come back after waiting for a little while. You'll need to eat, sleep or use a health potion in order to get back to tip-top shape.

There's a lot of factors to consider with survival mode - here are some tips and tricks to help you along the way:

  • Want to know what's affecting you right now? Head to Active Effects in the Magic menu and you'll see what being hungry, tired and cold does to affect your gameplay.

fast travel survival mode skyrim

  • Don't enter water when cold - you'll more than likely catch a disease and there's a high chance you can die and lose your progress.
  • Warm soup can heat you up - In the frozen tundra with nowhere to go for another 10 miles? Don't fret, eat some soup. It'll not only keep you fed, but will keep you nice and toasty. If that doesn't work, there's always a torch to keep your bones warm.

fast travel survival mode skyrim

  • Cook your food - sometimes it gets desperate when you're in a dungeon and there's no food to eat but the raw fish you caught outside, but it's always better to cook your food before eating it. Just like real life, eating raw food can lead to food poisoning in Skyrim.

fast travel survival mode skyrim

  • Fishing is the best way to get food quickly and easy, as long as you know where the best fishing spots are.
  • Craft camping gear - Included in the Anniversary Edition content through the Content Creation Club, crafting camping gear will make it so you're able to set down camp in the wilderness, giving you a warm fire, a place to cook and a place to settle in for the night.

fast travel survival mode skyrim

  • The colder you get, the slower you are. It also affects your stamina and how fast you swing your weapons and the effectiveness of your stealth.
  • Travelling in a horse and cart to far off places will make you tired and hungry, so don't get into one if you're already pretty fatigued and hungry, otherwise you risk dying on the journey to your location.

Skyrim AE Survival Mode guide - Tips, restrictions, how to enable and disable

Survival Mode was introduced back in 2017 as a downloadable mod for Skyrim Special Edition. With the release of Skyrim Anniversary Edition , Survival Mode is now officially part of the game, changing many facets by challenging your physical needs through a variety of restrictions and limitations.

While the purpose of this feature is to make the vanilla game enjoyable yet balanced, the added challenges will make your time on the continent quite difficult. This guide will explain what players need to know about Survival Mode in Skyrim, its restrictions, how to enable and disable, and more.

What is Survival Mode in Skyrim Anniversary Edition?

Veteran Skyrim (and RPG) players who are in the pursuit of a gruelling challenge on the continent of Skyrim, this new feature increases the game’s difficulty through a few set parameters.

These parameters are the need to eat, sleep and keep warm in order to survive Skyrim.

In the “Survival Mode” creation, temperature, hunger, and exhaustion immerse you into the very elements of Skyrim and challenge even the most veteran Dragonborn. pic.twitter.com/ol7fTwOyZe — The Elder Scrolls (@ElderScrolls) October 30, 2021

Once enabled, these parameters will need to meet if you wish to evade sickness and in the worst-case scenario, death. As long as you remain well-fed, well-rested, happy and kept warm, Survival Mode shouldn’t be bothersome for players.

Unfortunately, there are some restrictions when enabling Survival Mode. These restrictions won’t be easy to fulfil as they prevent you from using various gameplay mechanics.

skyrim anniversary edition skyrim anniversary edition survival mode skyrim travel

  • Fast Travel : players will not have access to the Fast Travel mechanic so those fishing trips to Whiterun will have to be done on foot.
  • Inventory : the weight of all items you will carry will be limited in Survival Mode. As such, you will be forced to only carry the bare essentials; everything else can be sold or destroyed for Gold, materials and other resources.
  • Levelling Up : in the vanilla version of Skyrim, levelling up occurs all too frequently. In Survival Mode, levelling up only occurs after players have rested so bid farewell to those one-hour naps.
  • Stamina Reduction : players can deplete their Stamina bar if they’re hungry, cold or exhausted. This is indicated when the bar is darkened as a result.
  • Warm/Cold meters : the Warm/Cold meter on their HUD can provide vital information if your character is hot or cold. Look for the Snowflake or Sun symbol on the meter if you're getting too hot or too cold.
  • Health : players won’t be able to recover their health back by standing around while in Survival Mode. To replenish your Health bar, players will have to eat, sleep or make use of a health/regeneration potion to gain some HP before setting out into the world or taking on enemy threats.

How to enable and disable Survival Mode in Skyrim Anniversary Edition?

To enable or disable the Survival Mode feature, players will need to toggle this in the game’s Settings menu. Head to Settings, then Gameplay and turn Survival Mode on or off.

skyrim anniversary edition skyrim anniversary edition survival mode skyrim tutorial

If you're unable to locate this setting, there is a chance you have started a new game save. To resolve this issue, you will need to complete the opening tutorial for Skyrim before having access to Survival Mode.

Once the opening tutorial is completed, Survival Mode will be unlocked through an in-game notification. However, the notification doesn't go into much detail about Survival Mode as it suggests learning more about the feature in the Help tab.

skyrim anniversary edition skyrim anniversary edition survival mode survival mode enable survival mode disable

Nevertheless, it will ask you to enable the feature if you wish to include additional challenges in your gameplay. If not, proceed to have the feature disabled by selecting 'No".

Players can also enable Survival Mode on any game save data imported to the Anniversary Edition as well as previous game saves made.

Tips on mastering Survival Mode in Skyrim Anniversary Edition

Before enabling Survival Mode, there are a few handy things to know. These can make the experience more bearable yet manageable during your time in Skyrim.

skyrim anniversary edition skyrim anniversary edition survival mode skyrim magic active effects

  • Utilise the Active Effects tab in the Magic menu to see what effects are affecting players at that given time.
  • If you need to cross an ice-cold river or take a plunge in one, don’t do so when your body is cold. Players can lose Stamina, increase their Warm/Cold meter or catch an illness so it's best to warm up the body before entering cold waters.

skyrim anniversary edition skyrim anniversary edition survival mode skyrim inventory warm soup

  • Warm soup is not only a delicious and nutritious meal but it can warm the body in case you find yourself in the middle of a frozen landscape. If you don’t have soup in your inventory, the torch can also warm the body but it won’t fill up your stomach.
  • Always, without fail, cook your food. Never eat food raw unless you want food poisoning.
  • If you need to replenish your inventory with food but the shopkeepers are miles away, make use of fishing to have quick access to food. If you know where to find the best fishing spots, players can catch their next meal with ease.

skyrim anniversary edition skyrim anniversary edition survival mode fishing

  • Players can survive the night in the forest, have a campfire for cooking and a place to rest by crafting camping gear. This will make your journey less frustrating if you’re constantly having to look for an inn or an empty bed to rest your bones.
  • Your body temperature, in particular how cold you are, can affect your stamina as well as how you wield your weapons in Skyrim
  • Try and keep your journeys as short as possible as travelling long distances can make players hungry and exhausted. Furthermore, you can risk depleting your stamina bar which could lead to death and losing your progress as a result.

Survival Mode will be unrelenting at first for most players, however, it can bring newfound appreciation for Skyrim and a new way of experiencing the game if you’re up for the challenge.

The brand new Survival Mode mod is out now for Skyrim , downloadable straight from the mod store from within Skyrim Special Edition . In this Skyrim Survival Mode guide , we've got all the tips and tricks you need to tackle the brand new mode, as well as everything you need to know heading back into the game for the first time in a while. Read on for the Skyrim Survival Mode Region Temperatures map , how to stay warm, a guide to hunger, and more.

If this Skyrim guide wasn't what you were after, then rest assured that we have a litany of additional Skyrim guides here at USgamer, including the location of every Dragon Wall in the game, all of which can be found in our Skyrim guides walkthrough hub.

How to Download Skyrim Survival Mode

Even though Skyrim Special Edition has recently been updated, you won't have the Survival Mode straight out of the gate, as you'll need to head into the mods store from the main page of the game in order to download the Survival Mode mod .

fast travel survival mode skyrim

Once you're in the mod store, you'll find the Skyrim Survival Mode mod right there in front of you, reduced to the price of nothing for a limited time only (how long it will be free for, we can't say right now). Once you've purchased the mod for free, it'll automatically download straight onto your console, and you're all ready to go once you've loaded up your save file, or started over from scratch.

Skyrim Survival Mode Guide

Like anything else new that's added to Skyrim Special Edition, you'll be hit with a notification as soon as you've loaded your save file, notifying you that Survival Mode has been implemented in the game. You'll have the option at the bottom of the screen to enable Survival Mode, but pause for a second to take in all the changes that the mod throws into the game, all of which you can see just below.

fast travel survival mode skyrim

We'll list the full changes that the Survival Mode implements just below, and then we'll expand upon each of these further down the Skyrim Survival Mode guide .

  • No fast travel system
  • Reduced carry weight
  • Level up only when you sleep (hello, Oblivion)
  • Clothing has warmth values
  • Hunger can reduce your stamina and magicka
  • Cold can reduce your health

Skyrim Survival Mode Tips and Tricks

The first thing to take in about the Skyrim Survival Mode is that fast travelling is now no longer an option, meaning that any time you want to travel somewhere, you'll have to keep food and clothing in mind before you set off. In addition to this, you'll now have to keep your warmth levels in mind, whenever you venture out into the wilderness of Skyrim.

Keeping Warm in Skyrim Survival Mode

All your clothing items now include warmth stats, which contribute to how long you can last out in the wilderness before you become cold. We'll get onto the cold factor in a moment, but for now, you'll have to bear in mind which pieces of clothing you should prioritise purely for warmth. For example, the Elven Armor pictured just below actually has less warmth value than the weaker Thalmor Robes, meaning that while the former offers better combat protection, you're going to want to go with the Thamor Robes if you want to stave off the cold.

fast travel survival mode skyrim

Once the cold has eventually gotten to your character, if they're out in the world of Skyrim for too long, it'll start to decrease your health limit. Although this happens very slowly at first when the initial notification pops up that 'the air is chilly', the rate at which your health decreases can drastically increase if your character stays cold for too long.

fast travel survival mode skyrim

Once you've been out in the cold for too long, you'll eventually get notifications that your character is 'freezing', or 'frostbitten', thus increasing the rate at which your maximum health limit decreases. What can you do to stave this off? For a start, you should always plan ahead on your journeys, making sure you're never left out in the open for too long. In addition to this, you should make sure you take a good amount of food with you wherever you go, at all times.

Hunger in Skyrim Survival Mode

Food can help keep you warm to a degree, but it's mainly used in the Skyrim Survival Mode to prevent hunger from taking a toll on your character. If your character is hungry, the maximum amount of their stamina will gradually decrease, much like how the cold can affect your overall health limit. While there isn't actually a hunger meter in Skyrim Special Edition , there are values on each food item that determine how much your hunger will be reduced by.

fast travel survival mode skyrim

Whenever you see a black area at the end of your stamina meter, it means your character is suffering the effects of hunger, and you'll need to eat a food item in order to cure this. This shouldn't be too much of a problem, as you can purchase an assortment of food items from various inns in just about every town and city in Skyrim, provided you've got enough coin. Or, you could just steal food items from within stores, provided you've got a stealth level that's high enough, of course.

Now that we've outlined all new systems introduced in the Skyrim Survival Mode mod , we'll go down all the more precise tips and tricks we have for you:

  • If you're starting out new playthrough, make sure to grab some bow and arrows in Helgen, so you can hunt animals for food straight away.
  • Hit up Embershard Mine as you're coming out of Helgen for some Salt Piles, which are key to many food recipes in Skyrim.
  • If you do need Salt Piles, you can find plenty in Fort Dawnguard.
  • You'll want to go with Light Armor if you want to strike a balance between protection and warmth (Fur Armor is the best for this).
  • Holding a torch will increase your warmth, while stepping in open water will rapidly decrease your warmth.
  • If you do have to go in water, keep in mind that you can find plenty of Salmon in any water source.
  • Since diseases are far more lethal in Survival Mode , we'd recommend going with an Argonian if you're going a brand new game.
  • Vegetable Soup is a great meal to make, and all it requires is Potato, Cabbage, Leek, and Tomato.

Skyrim Survival Mode Region Temperature Map

Just below, you can find a complete Skyrim Survival Mode map , detailing all the region temperatures , as well as campfire locations , and more. It's an incredibly useful item to have on your journeys around the frozen wilderness, and you should always plan accordingly whenever you're venturing outdoors.

There are all the Skyrim Survival Mode tips and tricks you need to undertake in order to see your character safely through the majority of Skyrim, but if we uncover any additional secrets, we'll be sure to add them to this guide.

Skyrim Anniversary Edition: 10 Tips For Survival Mode

Surviving in Skyrim isn't as easy as you might think. Here are some tips to get you started.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been ten years since the release of Skyrim , but here we are. Skyrim: Anniversary Edition includes everything from the Special Edition and improves upon it by adding some Creation Club content, such as Fishing, Rare Curios, the Saints & Seducers questline, and Survival Mode.

RELATED: Every Skyrim Port Ever Released, Ranked From Worst To Best

Survival Mode takes everything you know about Skyrim and flips it on its head. Not only does Survival Mode reduce your maximum carry weight and get rid of fast travel, but you now have to keep an eye on your fatigue, hunger and comfort levels. There’s a lot to be aware of while playing Survival Mode, so here are some tips and tricks to make your life easier.

10 Carry Food At All Times

It’s important to make sure you always have some food on you in Survival Mode because it’s in your best interest to avoid getting hungry. Your stamina and weapon skills will suffer if you do, so it’s best to keep around 10 percent of your carry weight dedicated to food since you don't have much space to work with.

There’s also no health regeneration in Survival Mode. The only way you can heal is through food, potions and restoration spells so you better level up your restoration stat if you want to learn some of the best healing spells out there . It's worth the grind.

9 Grab A Bow And Arrow Immediately

The best way to get meat in Survival Mode is by hunting game, so make sure you have a bow and a fair amount of arrows before you leave Helgen. It shouldn’t be too hard since most enemies at the beginning carry arrows and you’ll likely have a bow by the time you encounter the bear as you escape Helgen.

You have to learn to be self-sufficient in Survival Mode so getting your own meat is a must. The ultimate goal is to end up with one of the best bows in the game and you’ll get there eventually.

8 Map Out Your Journey

Seeing as there’s no fast travel in Survival Mode, you should plan your journey ahead of time. It’s best to stick to main roads as you make your way around Skyrim since they will eventually lead to a town or inn.

RELATED: Skyrim: Map Locations That Even You Didn't Know Existed

In fact, Bethesda released an official survival map of Skyrim , so make sure you have one printed out and by your side at all times. The map not only shows the location of major cities and towns, it even includes temperatures, campfires and cooking pots. It’s a very useful tool to have.

7 Make Sure You Wake Up Well-Rested

When your character gets tired in Survival Mode, it’s time to find a place to sleep because fatigue reduces your total magic. That being said, not just any bed will do the trick. It’s best to get that well-rested bonus by sleeping in an owned bed or an inn. Doing so will reset your tiredness and give you 10 percent more experience for eight in-game hours.

It’s important to note that you can’t level up in Survival Mode unless you sleep. Luckily, there are plenty of great player houses you can purchase in Skyrim , so getting a good night’s sleep shouldn’t be a problem.

6 Cook Vegetable Soup

You’ll quickly notice that most cooked meals require a whole lot of salt. While it’s a good idea to buy as many salt piles from merchants as possible, another option is to just avoid salt altogether and solely eat vegetable soup.

Sure, it may not be the best diet, but vegetable soup is all you need in Survival Mode. It requires no salt at all, restores 300 health and gives you passive health regeneration for five minutes. You can even find its ingredients very early on as there are plenty of leeks, potatoes and cabbage in Riverwood and the farms around Whiterun.

5 Wear Light Armor

Light armor is going to be your best friend in Survival Mode because of how lightweight it is. If you want to wear heavy armor, you will be over-encumbered in no time, so you almost have no choice but to go with light armor.

Make sure you work your way towards the Unhindered perk as it makes light armor weigh absolutely nothing. It’s one of the most useful perks in all of Survival Mode. If you’re worried about your armor rating, don’t be. Light armor is a fine choice because you’ll still be able to easily hit the armor cap of 567 through some smithing perks.

4 Carry Fur Armor For The Cold

If you’re worried about staying warm in the cold and blustery land of Skyrim, make sure to grab some fur armor. It can’t be crafted, but the armor is worn by bandits and Hold Guards, so it won’t be long before you have all four pieces.

RELATED: Skyrim: The Best Armor Sets & How To Find Them

Fur armor is perfect for staying warm in the cold areas of Skyrim, such as the Pale, Winterhold and Eastmarch. Just know that, even though fur armor can be improved, it’s not affected by smithing perks. This means it can’t be improved further than flawless without boosting the smithing skill over 100.

3 Stay Around Fire

If you ever find yourself getting dangerously cold to the point of freezing in Survival Mode, make sure to get as close to fire as you can. Simply taking out a torch will warm your character up. You could also stand near a fire or eat some hot stew to feel warm.

Even the Dark Elf's racial ability, Ancestor’s Wrath, helps with warmth since it surrounds you with fire. As you can see, there are plenty of ways to deal with the cold in Skyrim - you just have to get creative.

2 Be Mindful Of Diseases

Normally, if you contract a disease in Skyrim, it’s not a big deal. All you have to do is pray at a shrine of Talos or use a potion of cure disease and you’re good to go. That hasn’t changed in Survival Mode, but diseases are much more debilitating this time around.

If left untreated, diseases in Survival can progress to severe and even crippling, making their negative effects much more pronounced. It’s important to constantly check your active effects to make sure you’re not dealing with a disease. Argonians and Wood Elves have 50 percent disease resistance, which makes them a good choice for Survival Mode.

1 Increase The Difficulty

If you’re playing Survival Mode, it’s very likely that you’re a hardcore Skyrim player who isn’t playing the game for the first time. Survival mode is all about giving yourself a challenge, so why not make the game even tougher by setting the difficulty to adept or higher?

On top of that, you might as well download some mods to help with immersion . It’s going to make the experience even better. Playing Survival Mode on Skyrim: Anniversary Edition with these mods might be the best way to play the game.

Screen Rant

Skyrim survival mode guide: everything you need to know.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition adds new content such as survival mode. Players need to know how to endure Skyrim’s harsh climes.

With the release of the Anniversary Upgrade to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim , the new version of the game contains all the previously released content on the Creation Club , including survival mode. Survival mode is especially great for those who have put hundreds or even thousands of hours into Skyrim over the ten years that the game has been available and are looking for a new challenge. It’s also great for those who enjoy other survival games, such as Conan Exiles , Rust , Don’t Starve , or others.

Survival mode adds several new systems to Skyrim that players will need to carefully monitor. Not only that, but it also makes previous systems in the game a lot more important than before, such as cooking, potion-making, and choosing the right kind of clothing for the weather. Players will likely visit inns more often than they typically do, and they may want to think twice about swimming in freezing cold water.

RELATED: What Skyrim's Most Dangerous Animal (Not Dragon) Is

For some players, having a survival mode is a welcome improvement to Skyrim . It has always been exciting to explore all of Skyrim ’s intricacies. For all its complexity, it is rare that the game becomes truly challenging. Even harder difficulties only make combat tougher. Survival mode aims to change that , making all aspects of  Skyrim harder. Now, the world itself is a foe to be conquered. It’s also wonderful that this is an optional setting, meaning that those who aren’t interested in the survival elements don’t need to enable it.

Changes Survival Mode Brings to Skyrim

The first thing players should know is that health regeneration is no longer available in Skyrim's Survival mode. To regain health, players will need to use potions , cast spells, or eat food. They can’t simply wait out of combat for health to replenish. If players get caught in a bear trap, the damage that they suffer stays until they heal, so they should be careful and make sure they are at full health before they get into any fights.

Players will need to sleep before they can level up in Skyrim's Survival mode. Fast travel is also limited. To get most places, players need to either walk there or ride on horseback. There are a few places that players can fast travel, including sailing in boats or taking a carriage to major holds. Incidentally, these two changes to the game make it function similarly to how The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind worked .

Players are also limited in how much they can carry and will need to craft, buy, or find backpacks that can increase carry weight. This means they won’t be able to carry everything that isn’t nailed down, and they will have to make strategic decisions about what loot they choose to take with them. It also means earning money will be an issue for much longer in the game because players won’t have as much to sell. In addition, players will need to make offerings at shrines to receive blessings. This usually costs some money, though it is free for shrines built in one of the Hearthfire houses.

Diseases are much more deadly in Skyrim's Survival mode than typical gameplay. It is more likely that players will contract diseases from the various creatures across the world, and, if left untreated, diseases can progress to a more debilitating version, so carrying around extra Cure Disease potions is a good idea.

Dealing with Survival Mode’s Hunger, Cold, and Fatigue in Skyrim

There are three main things that players need to be aware of constantly as they traverse the deadly landscape of Skyrim  in Survival mode: hunger, cold, and fatigue. Each of these mechanics affects many things, including the health, stamina, and magicka bars, and even how effective certain skills are.

Hunger affects players’ stamina and their ability to wield most weapons. As characters get hungrier, their stamina bar gets smaller, which is indicated by a black section on the stamina bar. Eating food restores this section, so eating is more important than ever before. If characters eat enough, they will even receive a well-fed bonus. Players will need to be careful about eating raw meat though, as food poisoning is a possibility.

Next, players need to worry about the cold. Skyrim is a harsh, unforgiving climate, and many of its regions are freezing. The colder the player is, the less health they will have. Frost magic is especially deadly in Survival mode, as cold decreases players’ maximum health. Cold can also affect movement speed and even the ability to pick locks and pockets effectively . Those planning to play as thieves will want to stay as warm as possible.

Luckily, there are many ways to stay warm, like standing next to fires, using torches, or selecting armor and clothing that has higher warmth ratings. Players can also make hot soups using fire salts, which makes the character warmer in addition to restoring health and stamina.

Weather, time of day, and location all affect how warm or cold an area is too. Whiterun is a warmer climate, which means players won’t have to worry as much about staying warm there compared to regions such as Winterhold. It is a little discordant that NPCs are unbothered by the cold at all, but that would change AI behaviors which can have all sorts of unintended consequences.

The third major thing that players need to worry about is fatigue. Fatigue not only decreases the maximum available magicka to characters but also makes potions less effective. Players will need to sleep periodically, and beds indoors give players the best resting bonuses. In a pinch, players can construct camps in the wilderness to protect them from the cold and allow them much-needed rest. It’s not the best option, but better than nothing.

The various races of Skyrim   also have new effects relating to the survival aspects. For example, Khajiit and Argonians can eat raw food without getting food poisoning. Orcs are naturally resistant to hunger, fatigue, and cold. Finally, Nords have a higher resistance to cold environments.

Survival Mode can be activated as soon as you leave the tutorial area in Helgen . It makes the game more challenging by adding new elements and mechanics such as hunger, fatigue, and temperature.

After you leave Helgen, you’ll see a notification telling you about Survival Mode. This can be toggled on or off anytime in the Gameplay Settings panel .

Skyrim Survival Mode Mechanics Explained

Hunger   — Over time, your character will grow hungry. This will decrease your total stamina . To alleviate this, you’ll need to eat cooked food. Simply eating raw food won’t be enough, and doing so can actually lead to diseases. Consider building something like the Fish Hatchery to create a steady source of food.

Since cooking and alchemy are so important in this mode, you’ll want to keep our alchemy recipes list handy for things like potions that cure diseases and various poisons. You’ll also want to keep an eye out for specific ingredients like Salt Piles and food items like Cheese Wheels. You can also cook Clam Meat now for warming Clam Chowder.

Fatigue   —  The Dragonborn just can’t keep going on one adventure after another as before. You’ll actually need to rest in Survival Mode. If not, fatigue will decrease your total magicka . Ideally, you’ll want to sleep in beds found indoors (i.e., inns, sanctuaries, or houses that you buy). Simply sleeping outside add the well-rested buff to your character.

Cold vs. Warmth   — Climates and weather are probably the two most important factors to consider if you have Survival Mode enabled in Skyrim . Exploring out in the cold will decrease your total health , and swimming in frigid waters will exacerbate this effect. Eventually, your character will simply die.

To counter this, you’ll need to find sources of heat  in Survival Mode. Examples include building a campfire in the wilderness (more on this below), eating hot soup, and wearing different types of clothing that increase warmth .

Other Key Factors   — Here are a few other things to take note of if you’re playing Skyrim ‘s Survival Mode:

  • Fast Travel  — Direct teleportation by clicking on a location on the world map won’t work. However, it’s still possible to ride carriages or fly on a dragon.
  • Leveling Up  — To level up, you need to sleep in a bed.
  • No Health Regeneration  — Health doesn’t regenerate over time, so you’ll need to cast Restoration spells, drink potions, or eat food.

Camping, Fishing, and Adventurer’s Backpack Creations

From my experience, Skyrim Survival Mode can be brutal. The cold wilds can be unforgiving — and that’s not even considering the enemies and wildlife you’ll come across. After tinkering around in the mode for a few hours, I recommend having these Creation Club mods enabled to make the experience not only slightly easier but also a little more realistic.

  • Fishing   — Fishing becomes a great source of food that you can cook. Moreover, you can build a Fish Hatchery to have a steady supply of fish.
  • Camping   — This mod allows you to craft Camping Supplies (each one requires 1x Leather and 3x Firewood). For Firewood , you can easily use a Woodcutter’s Axe to chop logs. You can find some logs just outside of Belethor’s store in Whiterun. When you’re out in the wilderness in Survival Mode and you need a source of heat or a place to sleep, you can use Camping Supplies to create a campsite automatically.
  • Adventurer’s Backpack   — These backpacks can be crafted, some of which increase carry weight.

Should I Play Skyrim Survival Mode or Other Mods?

fast travel survival mode skyrim

What if you don’t want to try the default Survival Mode experience in Skyrim ? Well, that’s totally up to you. You don’t need to enable it. If you do want other options, you can try the following mods instead:

  • Frostfall by Chesko   — The mod is akin to Survival Mode, but there are plenty of options that you can tweak as opposed to a single on/off toggle for the entire feature. We consider this as one of the best mods for Skyrim .
  • Campfire by Chesko   — Similar to the above mod, this mod is also ideal if you want the added immersion and challenge. It includes support for multiple followers, including the ability to gather wood and construct items. Backpacks are included herein. There’s even a separate skill tree that’s used to bolster your camping and survival abilities.
  • Fur Armor Set by Keung   — This Survival Mode type mod adds several armor sets with varying themes. They are considered “Frostfall aware,” which means they add warmth for your character.

Who is Survival Mod For?

Skyrim Survival Mode is for experienced players who want to play the game again in a new way or are just up to an extremely difficult challenge. If you’ve played through the game a few times, you should try out this mode and put your skills to the test.

I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this mode for new or inexperienced players since you’ll need a good grasp on all the basic mechanics to really understand how to survive. However, if you’re brave enough, all the more power to you.

  • Makes the game more challenging
  • Changes the entire experience
  • More traditional RPG experience
  • More immersive gameplay
  • You can fish
  • Slower gameplay
  • No fast travel
  • Hard and frustrating if you’re not experienced in the base game/not for beginners
  • Cold weather will kill you a lot

And those are the main things you need to know about Survival Mode in Skyrim . It adds a bit of challenge to the overall experience, and there are plenty of other mods that fulfill a similar or even better role whether you own the Anniversary Edition or not. Skyrim Anniversary Edition: Beginner Tips For Survival Mode You Need To Know

These tips can help new Skyrim Anniversary Edition players conquer survival mode.

With The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition now out, new life has been breathed into the game. Even though it’s been out for ten years, fans still love the game and now there are new things to do in the game.

RELATED: Skyrim: Every New Unique Weapon In Anniversary Edition (And Where To Find Them)

One thing that players can do now is change the gameplay to Survival Mode. This mode makes the game a lot more difficult in ways that players never imagined. From having to sleep to staying warm, the game is a lot more immersive. Because there are a lot of changes from traditional Skyrim , there are some things players should know while playing this mode.

Update by Sarah Prado: With Survival Mode adding to the difficulty of the game, Skyrim is almost like a new game. It may look and sound impossible to play with all of the hindrances and things players must do to survive, but it’s possible and makes the game fun. Every little decision matters in order to survive the cold, harsh climate of Skyrim. Even picking what race to play is an important decision because it can either help or add to the difficulty. Players shouldn't be scared to try Survival Mode and might enjoy it even more than normal mode.

15 Choose Character Race Very Carefully

The very first decision players must make is choosing the race for their character. In vanilla Skyrim , all races have their racial passives and provide a minor advantage. With Survival Mode, things take an interesting turn. Not only do the races still have their passive ability from the vanilla version, but now come with disadvantages. For example, Argonians still have their Disease resistance and Waterbreathing passives, but now they can eat raw food without worrying about food poisoning and get colder 25% faster than other races.

Some races come with different advantages and disadvantages so the player will have to carefully decide what race they want to be. This can either make the journey a little easier or more difficult.

14 Stay Warm And Toasty

The province of Skyrim is known to be very cold and unforgiving for anyone who’s not ready and Survival Mode takes this to heart. It’ll be very easy to freeze to death in the colder areas. Winterhold is practically a death sentence for players who aren’t prepared. The entire hold is covered in snow and sunlight is practically nonexistent.

Players must keep their characters warm so they can move around better and not freeze to death. This is also dependent on the race of the character. Nords, Orcs, and Khajiits will fare a lot better in the cold than the other races. However, if the player is going for a mage build and chooses Dark Elf, Breton, or High Elf, they can use Flame Cloak to stay warm. Another way to stay warm is to use a torch. It’ll provide a little heat, but not much.

13 Best Armor Doesn’t Mean It’s The Warmest

If staying warm isn’t already a challenge, players might have to carry some special armor to help keep them warm. Especially at the beginning of the game, staying warm will prove to be a challenge. Some armor provides better Warmth than others. The Fur Armor with sleeves can be found early on and provide some of the best Warmth even later in the game.

Some armor might be ill-suited for certain areas so it’s best to carry some armor with high Warmth rating just in case. Especially when traveling in the Dawnstar, Winterhold, and Windhelm areas where there are more freezing climates than the rest of Skyrim.

12 Don’t Be A Hoarder

Picking up items was not really a problem before since players have a pretty high weight carry. Survival Mode cuts the carry weight in half at the beginning and this will limit players on what they carry back with them. This will force players to think about where the nearest merchant is and if it’s worth carrying so much with them, especially if the merchant is far away.

RELATED: The Most Frustrating Side Quests In Skyrim

Players should only carry the necessities and pick up only the most valuable and lightweight items. So be prepared to carry a lot of jewelry and gems as these always sell for a decent amount of gold.

11 Heal During And After Battle

Health recovery has taken a big hit in Survival Mode. Health will no longer recover if the player is just standing around after battle. Players will now need to heal by restoration spells or using potions to get a burst heal. To recover over time, eating food or drinking a regeneration potion is recommended.

Players can also enchant their armor to help with health recovery too. This can take some time because learning the enchantment might prove to be a little difficult as well as leveling up the enchantment skill line.

10 Get A Backpack Or Have Followers/Pets

If players are wanting to pick up more items along their journey, it’s best to get a backpack. There are different types of backpacks, but all of them increase the amount players can carry. Some will even offer other bonuses such as increasing bow damage, make lockpicking easier, or increase max Magicka. These backpacks can be made at a forge or can be bought from merchants. It’s very useful and players should get one as soon as they can to be able to hold more items they might need.

Another way to carry some items is to have followers or pets. They can carry some items too and will make gathering items a little easier. They won’t be able to carry much, but at least players can carry a little more.

9 Don’t Eat Raw Meat

Eating raw food didn’t do anything to players in vanilla Skyrim, but it has some consequences with Survival Mode. If players eat raw meat, there’s a pretty good chance that their characters will get Food Poisoning. This will decrease magicka and stamina recovery by 50%. Food won’t be able to restore health for the next three days. Considering that food is needed to survive, this will prove to be a huge problem.

A guaranteed way to not get Food Poisoning is being a Khajiit or Argonian. However, players also need to take into account if they want the disadvantages these races have when travelling throughout Skyrim.

8 Letting The Disease Linger Has Consequences

Diseases weren’t really much of a threat before, but Survival Mode has kicked it up a notch. Instead of just being a small and overall unthreatening nuisance, the diseases in Survival Mode will progress from bad to worse. Players will have to carry Cure Disease potions on them whenever they travel or if they’re near a shrine to one of the Nine Divines, pay 100 gold. Periodically check Active Effects to make sure all is well and clear since there are new diseases the player can get.

RELATED: Skyrim: The Rarest Alchemy Ingredients In The Game

To lessen the blow, players can choose to play as an Argonian or a Wood Elf. Both races have a constant Resist Disease effect that’s at 50%. This will halve the chances of getting diseases and players won’t have to carry much Cure Disease potions with them.

7 Properly Plan Out Journey

Players can kiss fast travel goodbye once Survival Mode is activated. To get anywhere, on foot, by horse, or paying for a carriage is the only way to go. If players are going to travel by foot or by horse, they will have to plan out their journey. Taking hunger, fatigue, and other issues into account, traveling from Riften to Markarth might not be possible to do in one go.

It’s best to keep to see which quests are close by to the character and do them as the player travels to the destination they really want to go to.

6 Make Food And Be Salty About It

Eating food is an essential part to surviving Survival Mode. If the character goes hungry, it will affect total stamina and players will only lose more stamina the longer the hunger goes on. So players will have to regularly feed their characters and carry food around to make sure they don’t go hungry. Keep some small food on hand like apples, carrots, etc. to help stave off hunger until the player is able to get a proper meal.

Players should also have Salt Piles on hand since a lot of food recipes require it. Another item players should keep on hand is Fire Salts. This will help heat up soups to a “Hot” version of it and give characters some Warmth.

5 Get Some Rest To Level Up

The only way to put points into any skill tree after leveling up is by going to sleep. This might be nostalgic and familiar for fans who played previous Elder Scrolls games . Not only will players be able to level up their characters from this, but it also helps with Fatigue. However, if players sleep outside they will not get the Well Rested bonus and will wake up Drained.

If players sleep indoors, how their character wakes up depends on how long they sleep and where they’re sleeping at. To get the Well Rested, players must sleep for at least two hours.

4 Learn To Hunt Or Go Swimming For Fish

Because most cooked meals require meat or fish, players should carry a bow and a few arrows to hunt down deer or elk. There are some cooking places that can be found throughout Skyrim like in bandit areas or ruins. If players do a little hunting, they will have meat on hand to be able to make some food to prevent Hunger.

RELATED: Skyrim: Strongest Armors In Anniversary Edition, Ranked

Players can also go swimming in rivers and lakes to find fish like salmon or the new fish that came out in the Anniversary Edition. Cooking them won’t be as fulfilling as stew or a steak, but they are better than an apple or tomato.

3 Carry Some Fruits Or Vegetables For Quick Snack

Since eating is basically required to survive, players should keep some fruit or vegetables on hand. Eating cooked meals like Apple Cabbage Stew or Cooked Beef is a better choice, but that requires a cooking pot. With no Fast Travel available in Survival Mode, finding a cooking pot might or some a merchant that sells food might take a while to find. To help with Hunger, players should keep some food like fruit or vegetables on hand for a quick snack.

Carrying cooked food would be better, but players should keep an apple or tomato just in case. It’ll only help ease the Hunger a bit, but it’s better than letting their character starve. Plus, apples and tomatoes are lighter than carrying cooked foods so players will be able to carry more of them.

2 Do Favors For NPCs To Get A Free Resting Place And Food

Now that sleep is essential in-game, finding a comfortable place to sleep will be tough. If players aren’t wanting to sleep outside, helping out NPCs can be beneficial. Helping them will let players use their beds to sleep in and will let them eat or take food from their homes.

It may sound tedious to help out, but doing the quests will give players plenty of options throughout the province. Take the time to help out various NPCs in different areas to have a free place to stay and eat. It’s better than a campsite or any random sleeping mats that can be found.

1 Get A Mount As Soon As Possible

Without fast travel, getting around Skyrim is going to be interesting. Traveling on foot is going to be the way that players get around the massive province for a while. Players should save up money to buy a horse or do quests to get a free one. Shadowmere will be available halfway through the Dark Brotherhood quest. Frost is also another horse that players can get for free from The Promises to Keep quest by not giving the horse to Louis Letrush.

Players can also go look for a wild horse and tame it. The best mounts to get would be Arvak or the Daedric Horse , which can be summoned. This is because if they die, they can always be resummoned immediately. If Shadowmere dies, he will pop up after ten in-game days.

Camping is a Creation that adds a movable campsite for sleeping and cooking in the wilderness. It was released on April 5, 2018 for 300 CC Credits. The Creation's features work well with Survival Mode .

Official Summary [ edit ]

Overview [ edit ].

This Creation adds the ability to set up a campsite out in the wilderness. It consists of a shelter to sleep in, a campfire to cook a limited number of food items, and a crate to sit on. Once placed, the campsite also gets a map marker which can be used for fast travel. To set up or move your campsite, you will first need to craft Camping Supplies . This item requires three firewood and one piece of leather and can be crafted at any forge or anvil . Upon setting up camp for the first time, you will be given a brief tutorial message:

The reference to staying warm refers to the Warmth CC mechanic added by the Survival Mode Creation. The Camping Creation is intended to be used in conjunction with Survival Mode, due to the new requirements relating to warmth and sleep which are imposed in that mode. With Survival Mode enabled, the campfire will allow you to warm up by staying near it, although Argonians may need to light a torch as well. It will also allow you to craft a limited number of hot soups for later use.

This Creation also adds a new loading screen relating to campsites and a new "Camping" section to the in-game Help menu.

Content [ edit ]

  • Camping Supplies

Notes [ edit ]

  • Hot soups can no longer be crafted at a campfire with the Anniversary Edition . Only meals with food that is caught or hunted can be crafted, such as fish and rabbits.
  • The Well Rested bonus is not granted when sleeping at a campsite.
  • Each instance of camping supplies is one use only. They do not return to your inventory upon choosing to break camp.
  • In Survival mode, sleeping in your camp will still leave you Drained, as it counts as sleeping outdoors.
  • Only one campsite can be set up at a time. You do not need to break camp before creating a new campsite. The old camp will break upon creation of a new campsite.

  1. Enable fast travel in Survival Mode? : r/skyrim

Nobody had any problems with New Vegas's hardcore mode allowing fast travel and so far, one of the most common criticisms for Fallout 4 and Skyrim's survival setting is not being able to fast travel. Hell, one of the first mods released after those became a thing was one that allows fast travel in survival mode.

I was looking for it, but this isn't a thing on PC, unfortunately. Skyrim becomes a major pain in the butt without fast travel.
