Kate Winslet broke Tom Cruise's underwater filming record on Avatar 2 set without realizing it

tom cruise kate winslet movie

Does Kate Winslet get to join the Impossible Mission Force now?

We've known for a while now that the actress held her breath for more than seven minutes while shooting underwater scenes for Avatar 2 . But Winslet didn't realize — nor did anyone else until recently, apparently — that this means she held her breath longer than Tom Cruise on the set of Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation , previously considered the record for underwater breath-holding on screen .

Cruise trained extensively to hold his breath for six and a half minutes to film an underwater stunt for the blockbuster, which means Winslet bested him by about 45 seconds. However, the Titanic actress was unaware that this feat had become public until a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight .

"It's so funny because I don't really read reviews or media things. I'm not on Instagram, like I'm just completely disconnected from that part of my life," Winslet said. "So all of this week and the week before, I've had people coming up to me at work saying, 'Oh my God, like seven minutes and 14 seconds? Like, what?!' And I'm going, 'What? Hang on, wait a minute. How do you know that?'"

"It was brilliant and I was very proud of myself and I'll probably never be able to do it again," she added. "That came at the end of four weeks worth of quite intense training and it was in the dive tank, it was in the training tank. But I loved it."

Winslet had previously revealed the seven-minute stat in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter , noting, "I had to learn how to free-dive to play that role in Avatar , and that was just incredible. My longest breath hold was seven minutes and 14 seconds, like crazy, crazy stuff."

The actress can currently be seen alongside Saoirse Ronan in the Oscar contender Ammonite , now playing in select theaters. “Everything comes from an extremely steady, still place,” Winslet told EW of her character, Mary, in the romantic drama. “I had to focus a lot on that because movement and expression for Mary is used as communication. I had to be very careful about when those moments would be. We have to really choose when she would smile. She doesn’t smile that often. When she does, it’s an important vocal moment that comes from that expression of joy.”

Avatar 2 , which recently "100 percent" completed filming , is currently scheduled to hit theaters Dec. 16, 2022. However, as we've learned repeatedly, that date is very much subject to change.

Kate Winslet told Entertainment Tonight this week she’s “very proud” to have beaten Tom Cruise ‘s record for the longest underwater breath hold in a feature film. Tom Cruise held his breath underwater for six minutes while filming “ Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,” but Winslet beat him by over a minute, holding her breath for seven minutes and 14 seconds while filming an underwater scene for James Cameron’s “ Avatar 2 .”

“It was brilliant and I was very proud of myself and I’ll probably never be able to do it again,” Winslet said. “That came at the end of four weeks worth of quite intense training and it was in the dive tank, it was in the training tank. But I loved it.”

Winslet’s “Avatar 2” co-star Sigourney Weaver revealed earlier this year the “Avatar” cast trained with elite military divers in order to maximize the amount of time they could hold their breath underwater. Cast members wore weights around their waists during filming to keep them submerged underwater. Cameron filmed a majority of “Avatar 2” in giant water takes, and the longer the cast could hold their breath without returning to the surface for oxygen meant less interruptions in filming.

Winslet’s record-breaking breath hold has been circulating the internet for quite awhile, but she had no idea until her press tour for her new film ‘Ammonite’ started. As the Oscar winner said, “It’s so funny because I don’t really read reviews or media things. I’m not on Instagram, like I’m just completely disconnected from that part of my life. So all of this week and the week before, I’ve had people coming up to me at work saying, ‘Oh my God, like seven minutes and 14 seconds? Like, what?!” And I’m going, ‘What? Hang on, wait a minute. How do you know that?'”

Winslet held her breath for over seven minutes, but Weaver was no slouch either. The “Alien” favorite managed to hold her breath for six minutes while filming “Avatar 2.” Cameron’s sequel is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 16, 2022. “Avatar 3” will follow with a theatrical release on December 20, 2024. The fourth and fifth films are due in 2026 and 2028.

Kate Winslet shoots her underwater scenes for Avatar 2.

When filming underwater scenes, sometimes actors and stunt people are required to hold their breath for longer than usual. In the case of director James Cameron's upcoming Avatar 2 movie , many of the scenes seem to take place in the water .

Actor  Kate Winslet , who plays what is described as a "water person" in the movie, held her breath for an impressive seven minutes and 14 seconds. She topped the record of actor Tom Cruise , who held his breath for six minutes while filming an underwater stunt for the 2015 movie Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation .

"It was brilliant and I was very proud of myself and I'll probably never be able to do it again,"  Winslet told Entertainment Tonight on Nov. 10. "That came at the end of four weeks worth of quite intense training and it was in the dive tank, it was in the training tank. But I loved it. We're very, very lucky as actors that often we have to learn a whole new skill."

On Oct. 26, Avatar producer Jon Landau posted an image of Winslet filming an underwater scene in one of the movie's massive set . He also included a quote from Winslet  from a recent interview  of her talking about holding her breath underwater.

"I had to learn how to free-dive to play that role in Avatar, and that was just incredible," Landau quoted Winslet saying in her interview. "My longest breath-hold was seven minutes and 14 seconds, like crazy, crazy stuff. I play a water person. I am a water person."

Kate Winslet Says She's 'Proud' to Beat Tom Cruise's Underwater Filming Record (Exclusive)

Kate Winslet

The 'Ammonite' actress opened up to ET about her recent record-setting underwater work on 'Avatar 2.'

Kate Winslet has set a new filmmaking record, and she didn't even realize the significance! The Oscar winner opened up to ET about how she recently broke a record for holding her breath while filming an underwater scene for Avatar 2 .

While filming her scenes for the sci-fi sequel, Winslet held her breath for an incredible seven minutes. She shattered the record previously set by Tom Cruise  for an underwater scene in Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation , in which he held his breath for six minutes .

However, as Winslet told ET's Nischelle Turner, she didn't even know that her record was public knowledge.

"It's so funny because I don't really read reviews or media things. I'm not on Instagram, like I'm just completely disconnected from that part of my life," she explained. "So all of this week and the week before, I've had people coming up to me at work saying, 'Oh my God, like seven minutes and 14 seconds? Like, what?!" And I'm going, 'What? Hang on, wait a minute. How do you know that?'"

"It was brilliant and I was very proud of myself and I'll probably never be able to do it again," Winslet added. "That came at the end of four weeks worth of quite intense training and it was in the dive tank, it was in the training tank. But I loved it."

As Winslet explained, it's doing new and unexpected things that has proven to be "one of the things I love about the job."

"We're very, very lucky as actors that often we have to learn a whole new skill," Winslet shared.

The actress was joined for her interview by  Saoirse Ronan , with whom she shares the screen in director Francis Lee's acclaimed period drama Ammonite . Winslet explained that her role in the film also provided the opportunity to learn a whole new set of skills and knowledge.

"I had to learn how to be a paleontologist on the beaches of the Jurassic coast on the south coast of England," Winslet shared. "I had no idea how to do any of those things, and sometimes the job does require us to learn how to do something new, something incredibly cool."

For Ronan, it seems that working with Winslet was the coolest part of the project.

When asked about how hard it was to keep her cool around Winslet -- considering Ronan is a massive Titanic fan -- the 26-year-old actress admitted, "It's hard. Because Kate is so cool. Kate is such a cool, cool, cool chick."

Ronan recalled how she was shooting Little Women when she first read the Ammonite screenplay, and was shooting a scene with Timothee Chalamet where they are ice skating together, which reminded her of one of Titanic 's iconic romantic scenes between Winslet's Rose and Leonardo DiCaprio's Jack.

"It's like a carbon copy of the famous shot in Titanic , and I said to him, I was like, 'This is our Jack and Rose moment!' And then I went back to my chair and got my phone out and Kate had called," Ronan remembered. "I was like, "I've just done your shot! Oh my God, we have to do this film together!'"

"I had a few films throughout my childhood that I would watch religiously, literally every single night, and Titanic [was one of them]," Ronan added with a smile.

While the love story of Rose and Jack has become an indelible part of pop culture, there's a growing fandom for another one of her romantic tales, The Holiday , which is celebrating the 14th anniversary of its release on Nov. 29.

"For me, the biggest take home, honestly, was working with Jack Black," Winslet said, reflecting on the heartfelt rom-com. "We really had a lovely time together. He's just a sweet, generous person and I hadn't worked with him before... it was a very special time working with him."

"Also, Eli Wallach, who sadly is no longer with us," she added. "He turned 91 when we were making The Holiday, and he would tell stories about what it was like to dance with Marilyn Monroe and I would just hang on his every word, and that was pretty special."

Winslet and Ronan's romantic drama Ammonite hits theaters Nov. 13.

Kate Winslet Is ‘Very Proud’ After Beating One Of Tom Cruise’s Daredevil Records While Making ‘Avatar 2’

Uproxx authors

One of the more impressive details to come out of the production for Avatar 2 is the intense underwater work that’s being done for James Cameron’s long-awaited sequel. Back in August, Kate Winslet revealed that the grueling training paid off when she was able to hold her breath for seven minutes and 14 seconds while filming a scene for the epic sci-fi film. Turns out, Winslet’s feat shattered a record previously held by Tom Cruise . The actor held his breath for six minutes for Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation , which was the longest underwater time until Winslet came along and, well, blew him out of the water.

Winslet beating Cruise’s record only recently came to light, and while she’s “very proud” of her accomplishment, which was the result of a grueling four weeks of prep work, she’s even more surprised that people even knew about it. Via Entertainment Tonight :

“It’s so funny because I don’t really read reviews or media things. I’m not on Instagram, like I’m just completely disconnected from that part of my life,” she explained. “So all of this week and the week before, I’ve had people coming up to me at work saying, ‘Oh my God, like seven minutes and 14 seconds? Like, what?!” And I’m going, ‘What? Hang on, wait a minute. How do you know that?'”

Of course, Winslet might have some unlikely competition on her hands. Sigourney Weaver also filmed underwater work for Avatar 2 , and she was able to hold her breath for up to six minutes, which if we’re not mistaken, would match Cruise’s record. So we might need an official count to determine who’s in second place here.

Kate Winslet has smashed Tom Cruise 's record for filming underwater – and she can't quite believe it.

The actor, 45, achieved the feat while filming Avatar 2 , the long-awaited sequel to James Cameron’s 2009 hit Avatar .

Cruise previously held the record after breathing underwater while filming Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation back in 2011.

According to Avatar producer Jon Landau, Winslet broke it by a hefty 74 seconds, bringing the record to seven minutes and 14 seconds.

“It’s so funny because I don’t really read reviews or media things,” Winslet told Entertainment Tonight in a new interview. “I’m not on Instagram, like I’m just completely disconnected from that part of my life.”

The Cribs: ‘Bands tried to recreate the groupie scene of the 1970s’

She continued: “So all of this week and the week before, I’ve had people coming up to me at work saying, ‘Oh my God, like seven minutes and 14 seconds? Like, what?!’ And I’m going, ‘What? Hang on, wait a minute. How do you know that?’”

Winslet, who will next be seen alongside Saoirse Ronan in romance drama Ammonite , said: “It was brilliant and I was very proud of myself and I’ll probably never be able to do it again."

The Oscar-winner said that she feels “very, very lucky” to “learn a whole new skill” as pat of her job.

“That came at the end of four weeks worth of quite intense training and it was in the dive tank, it was in the training tank. But I loved it. We’re very, very lucky as actors that often we have to learn a whole new skill.”

A UK release date is yet to be set for Ammonite . Avatar 2 will be released on 21 December 2021.

This Liam Hemsworth Action Movie On Netflix Adds An Exciting Twist To An Overused Villain Trope

Deadpool & wolverine review: the mcu multiverse movie i've been waiting for, heat 2 is easily michael mann's most exciting movie 20 years after $220 million hit.

Kate Winslet is proud to have beaten Tom Cruise’s underwater record for Avatar 2 . In 1997, Winslet took a voyage on the doomed ocean liner Titanic for director James Cameron, and nearly drowned in the process of shooting one of the movie’s watery action scenes.

Many actors would have said no thanks to doing more underwater work, especially with the notoriously demanding Cameron, after going through such a harrowing experience. Winslet on the other hand was left wanting to do more. So when Cameron came calling for Winslet to head to the fictional moon Pandora and play a member of the reef-dwelling tribe of Na’vi in Avatar 2 , the actress signed on. Recently, behind-the-scenes photos teased Winslet’s eventual work for the Avatar sequel, as the actress held her breath for seven minutes to film a scene involving a weird underwater Na’vi ceremony .

Related:  Avatar 2's Biggest Hurdle Is What Made The First Movie Successful

Winslet as it turned out broke a record by holding her breath for seven minutes in the scene, surpassing the six minutes of breath-holding Cruise achieved while shooting Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation . But as Winslet told ET in a recent interview, she didn’t even know the scope of her achievement until other people pointed it out to her. She explained:

"It's so funny because I don't really read reviews or media things. I'm not on Instagram, like I'm just completely disconnected from that part of my life. So all of this week and the week before, I've had people coming up to me at work saying, 'Oh my God, like seven minutes and 14 seconds? Like, what?!" And I'm going, 'What? Hang on, wait a minute. How do you know that?' It was brilliant and I was very proud of myself and I'll probably never be able to do it again. That came at the end of four weeks worth of quite intense training and it was in the dive tank, it was in the training tank. But I loved it."

Cruise of course is well known for his death defying movie stunts, including dangling from the outside of the Burj Khalifa skyscraper, hanging off the wing of a plane during takeoff and doing his own dangerous helicopter stunt flying. For his next trick, Cruise will fly into orbit to film on the International Space Station. Winslet on the other hand is better known for her actual acting than her stunts, having snagged seven Oscar nominations in her career, with a win coming in 2009 for The Reader . Cruise by comparison has just three Oscar nominations with no wins so far.

While Cruise has focused on airborne stunts involving leaping between buildings and diving out of airplanes, others have stepped up to perfect the art of underwater acting, with Winslet now owning the distinction of the longest time holding one’s breath. As it happens, Winslet's Avatar 2 co-star Sigourney Weaver also set an impressive breath-holding mark of six minutes while shooting her own underwater scenes. Now that it’s gotten out that Winslet topped Cruise’s time, Cruise may demand that Christopher McQuarrie write an underwater scene for Mission: Impossible 7 so he can get the record back. But until Cruise gets around to proving he can hold his breath underwater longer than any other Oscar-nominated actor, Winslet and her Avatar 2 stunt coordinators can enjoy setting one of the odder records in moviemaking.

"It was so hard, and I so wanted it to be good, and I was so terrified that people might hate what I had done," Winslet says. "When something is really important to me, I almost can't watch it. I'm a little bit like this with 'Ammonite.' I'm 45 and I've been doing this for 27 years now, and I still get really scared."

Set in 19th-century England, "Ammonite" (now available to rent on demand and digital platforms including  Amazon Prime ) imagines a passionate love affair between real-life paleontologist Mary Anning (Winslet) and a sheltered society woman (Saoirse Ronan). The film presented new acting challenges for Winslet, whose character is mostly silent and braves the elements to find fossils.

The actress, who is in the running for an eighth Oscar nomination this awards season, talks to USA TODAY about reuniting with "Titanic" director James Cameron on "Avatar 2" (out Dec. 16, 2022) and her 20-year-old daughter Mia Threapleton's acting career.

Gotham Awards: Netflix's 'Cuties' scores nomination, Chadwick Boseman gets posthumous nod

Question: "Ammonite" just played Rome Film Festival last month, alongside your daughter's new thriller, "Shadows." How does it feel to have her following in your footsteps as an actor?

Kate Winslet:  That's a fantastic feeling. She's very natural, in ways I wasn't when I was her age. I've known for a long time Mia was going to tell me, "OK, I really want to do this." I've always tried to say: "That's absolutely fine, but know you've got to work for it. You might not get the jobs, and when they come your way, it might take years." And of course she's blessed with a different surname, so they had absolutely no idea who her mother was when she was cast. So for my daughter to know that for the rest of her life, that's almost more important than anything else. I'm enormously proud of her.

Q: Have you introduced your kids to any of your movies during lockdown?

Winslet: They're obsessed with "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind." I wanted to watch it with them and they watched it without me, which is so annoying. And we're planning on watching "Revolutionary Road" (with Leonardo DiCaprio), probably over Christmas break.

Q: That's one of my favorites.

Winslet:  I think that's Leo's greatest work, I really do. That and "(What's Eating) Gilbert Grape." But knowing Leo the way I know him, I know how much heart and soul and pain and vulnerability went into "Revolutionary Road," because I was there every day. I'm just so proud of him.

Q: I'm not sure I should admit this, but I just watched "Titanic" for the first time a couple of months ago.

Winslet:  Oh, my God, I love you as much as I love the people I meet on airplanes who haven't got a clue who I am. (Laughs.) What did you think?

Q: I mean, I lost it at the scene where Rose (Winslet) jumps out of the lifeboat and runs to kiss Jack (DiCaprio). I was just crying for the rest of the movie.

Winslet:  Aww. We complained so much about the jumping out of the bloody lifeboat scene. We had to do it so many times! And the scene where they kiss up on the deck ? We had to shoot that on about seven different occasions: some with green screens, some with blue screens, some with the real sea in the background, some with the real sunset in the background, that we didn't quite get because something went wrong. Honestly, I have so many hilarious stories from that film.

Q: After all those traumatic water scenes in "Titanic," were you reluctant about getting back in the water with James Cameron for "Avatar 2"?

Winslet:  No, I couldn't wait actually. I'm a real water baby, I love scuba diving. But breath-holding is very different, so I knew I would have to learn a whole new thing and I just absolutely loved it. So much of the water work was done with Cirque du Soleil water performers, so I spent masses of time developing great friendships with these unbelievable superhuman artists with impossible bodies. And then there's me squeezing my sausage-y self into this freediving wetsuit. (Laughs.)

Q: And you broke Tom Cruise's underwater filming record ! (Cruise held his breath underwater for six minutes shooting 2015's "Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation." Winslet held hers for seven minutes and 14 seconds filming "Avatar 2.")

Winslet: Someone just told me, I didn't know that! I impressed myself. I thought I had died, because you come up from a breath hold and you're like (gasping), "Have I died? Have I died?" You go into this weird headspace of, "This could be what death feels like. Maybe I'm dead." Because you close your eyes, you slow your heart rate down, you don't move. I'm staring at the bottom of a 25-feet-(deep) tank, so even your vision goes a bit weird. I was like, "Yeah, I'm definitely dead." And then finally when I realized, "Oh, I am in fact about to die," I came up and couldn't believe it was 7 minutes 14.

Tom Cruise and Kate Winslet have never worked together, nor have they even met each other, but the Avatar: The Way of Water actress believes that Cruise is probably fed up with her. Winslet joined the Avatar franchise for its sequel, and as part of her work on the movie she managed to break a quite staggering record for the length of time an actor has held their breath underwater during a production. After going without air for an unbelievable seven minutes and fourteen seconds, Winslet bested the previous record-holder by more than a minute. That previous record holder was none other than Tom Cruise .

Since the press marketing of began, many details about the production of the movie have been unveiled, including Winslet’s impressive breath-holding. However, the actress is well aware that the story had been published in so many places that she believes that Cruise must be “fed up” hearing how she smashed his Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation record. She told Insider :

"Poor Tom. I mean, I don't know Tom at all – I've never met him in my life – but I'm sure he's getting very fed up of hearing this story of how I broke his record. I loved it, though. ... I was amazed how good I was at it and how I just kept getting better."

Who Does Kate Winslet Play In Avatar: The Way of Water?

Kate Winslet plays the role of Ronal in the sequel to Avatar . According to the actress, Ronal is a character who is a rival of Zoe Saldana’s Neytiri, someone who is out to do everything she can to protect her family whatever she needs to do. Speaking previously Winslet told Empire Magazine :

"These two females are so aligned in their deep desire to keep their individual families safe. They are both powerful, willful creatures who respect their husbands but will not be led by them. They carve their own paths, and they expect to be listened to. They are both physically as capable as one another, and in the world of Pandora, the need for physical ability amongst all tribespeople is not only important — it is crucial. They also need to possess equal strength to their male counterparts, which both these females do. In staggering ways. Working with Zoe was just wonderful. Her commitment to the world of Pandora and being Na'vi is so embedded within her now that it is truly inspiring to be around. It's as if it's in her blood now.”

Avatar: The Way of Water finally arrived in cinemas this weekend to the expected wave of positive reviews, big box office results and a confirmation that James Cameron’s decade long journey to bringing the first of his Avatar sequels to screen has been worth it. With at least three more movies almost guaranteed to follow , it seems like the Avatar franchise is giving audiences something to invest in for at least the next several years.

Kate Winslet in 'Lee.'

Even as bombs and bullets fly around her, Kate Winslet also has to battle sexism among Second World War correspondents in the latest trailer for Lee .

In Ellen Kuras’ biopic for Sky , Winslet portrays real-life American war correspondent Lee Miller.

“I just want to do my part. Why should the men get to decide what this is?,” Winslet, wanting to document Nazi atrocities, asks her Vogue editor (Andrea Riseborough) early on in the trailer.

The latest trailer also has Andy Samberg playing Life Magazine photographer David E. Scherman, Alexander Skarsgård as the English Surrealist painter and photographer Roland Penrose, and Marion Cotillard playing Solange D’Ayen, the fashion director of French Vogue and a friend of Lee.

Kate Winslet's New Drama 'Lee' Will Be Your Favorite Fall Movie Of 2024

"When I wanted to look away, I knew I couldn't." Those are the final words in the latest trailer for Kate Winslet 's Lee , which follows the journey of WWII photographer Lee Miller. The movie places familiar faces like Kate Winslet and Andy Samberg in the middle of war-torn Europe, which at first glance, feels surprising. Their warmth, charm, and grace shine through gritty darkness of the trailer , making them feel slightly out of place — but to me, that makes the movie even more impactful. Because no one has a place in something as devastating as war. This is definitely one of my most-anticipated fall movies , and I can't wait to see it in theaters. Check out everything you need to know below.

What is the movie Lee about?

Lee follows photographer Lee Miller, who provided the world with some of its most iconic and unforgettable war photographs — including one of Lee in Hitler's private bathtub. The model-turned-war correspondent seeks to capture truth with empathy, but when a secret from her childhood comes to light, it costs her nearly everything.

When is the Lee movie release date?

Lee is coming to theaters September 27, 2024.

Who's in the cast of Lee with Kate Winslet?

In addition to Kate Winslet, Lee stars Marion Cotillard, Andrea Riseborough, Andy Samberg, Noémie Merlant, Josh O'Connor, Alexander Skarsgård, Arinzé Kene, Vincent Colombe, Patrick Mille, Samuel Barnett, Zita Hanrot, and James Murray.

Manny Jacinto is a recognizable face thanks to television roles on “The Good Place” and “Nine Perfect Strangers,” but he’s currently breaking through like never before as Qimir on Disney+’s “Star Wars” series “The Acolyte.” Jacinto’s seductive Sith Lord is quite possibly the sexiest character in “Star Wars” history, and he’s quickly become one of the buzziest new additions to the franchise’s canon.

Whereas “Top Gun: Maverick” served as a blockbuster moment in the careers of Glen Powell and Miles Teller under the presence of Tom Cruise, it did hardly anything to boost Jacinto’s screen presence. Not that the actor was bitter about the experience.

“Fortunately, it still was a great experience — you get to see this huge machine at work, see how Tom Cruise works, and you get to be a small part of this huge franchise,” he told GQ.

Speaking to a Philippines news outlet in 2022 (via GQ ), Jacinto remembered being cast in the “Top Gun” sequel back in 2018. He then spent months in flight training with real military pilots in order to prep for shooting.

Jacinto told GQ that he didn’t know his role was so drastically cut down until the sequel opened in theaters.

“It kind of fuels you, because at the end of the day, Tom Cruise is writing stories for Tom Cruise,” Jacinto said about the experience. “It’s up to us — Asian Americans, people of color — to be that [for ourselves]. We can’t wait for somebody else to do it. If we want bigger stories out there, we have to make them for ourselves.”

Jacinto is now getting his blockbuster moment thanks to “Star Wars” and “The Acolyte,” the first season of which is now streaming in its entirety on Disney+. The studio has yet to announce a second season. Head over to GQ’s website to read Jacinto’s profile.
