Mercedes A Class (W169) CVT 722.8 transmission ECU problems

Mercedes A Class W169 CVT gearbox problems

This Mercedes A Class CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission)  ECU is an extremely common problem for the 722.8 transmission.

The root cause of this A Class gearbox problem is internal component breakdown of the ECU, commonly causing fault codes including: "0793 - The RPM Signal From Component Y3/9B4 CVT Secondary RPM Sensor Is Not Available" and "0722 - The RPM Sensor From Component Y3/9B5 CVT Output RPM Sensor Is Not Available", among others to be stored in the gearbox ECU. Faults with the output and secondary transmission speed sensor are also very common.

When the gearbox ECU fails, the vehicle will experience a loss of power, limp home mode and poor to limited gear selection. A warning message will also be displayed across the dash: Transmission Visit Workshop.

This fault is not limited to only the Mercedes A Class gearbox ECU, these problems will also occur for the B Class CVT models.

The usual solution for this CVT gearbox problem consist of replacing the gearbox ECU, valve chest, solenoids and subsequent coding. This can be avoided using our test and rebuild service, no need for subsequent programming as we retain the original coding. All we require is the gearbox ECU to resolve the 0722 and 0793 fault codes and eliminate the "Transmission Visit Workshop" display message.

Our rebuild option re-engineers the original manufacturing defects, meaning that the chance of further problems arising would be slim to none, but should any issues occur our lifetime warranty will ensure swift resolution of any problems. However, our work defect rate is lower than 0.6% on all of our rebuilds, so you can be assured of our very high standard of work.

Common Failure symptoms:

  • Limp home mode / safe mode
  • Loss of power
  • ‘Transmission visit workshop’ warning message on dashboard
  • Transmission warning light on dashboard
  • Not selecting gears
  • Sticking in gear
  • Output speed sensor fault
  • Speed sensor fault

Common fault codes:

  • 0722 - The RPM Sensor From Component Y3/9B5 CVT Output RPM Sensor Is Not Available
  • 0793 - The RPM Signal From Component Y3/9B4 CVT Secondary RPM Sensor Is Not Available
  • 0717 - The RPM Signal From Component Y3/9B5 (CVT Output RPM Sensor) Is Not Available
  • 0730 - The Gear Ratio In The Continuously Variable Automatic Transmission (CVT) Is Not Permissible
  • 1634 - Component Y3/9N1 (CVT (Continuously Variable Automatic Transmission) Control Unit) Is Defective Or The Voltage Supply Is Faulty

Affected Vehicles:

  • Mercedes A-Class A150 / A160 / A170 / A180 / A200
  • Mercedes B-Class B150 / B160 / B170 / B180 / B200

Test and rebuild:

We test these problematic Mercedes CVT gearbox ECU’s under various, real-world load and driving conditions using our state of the art Hardware In-the-Loop (HIL) testing rig which will enable us to identify all internal faults. Our technicians will rebuild the transmission ECU and replace all common failing components with versions that are higher rated than standard, and then extensively re-test to ensure that no faults remain. This means that your rebuilt CVT gearbox ECU will perform as good as, if not better than a brand new replacement unit, ridding the Mercedes A Class of CVT gearbox problems once and for all.

Programming:

This transmission control ECU is coded to the vehicle, however all original programming is retained meaning that once received back it is plug and play.

Our strict quality control: encompassing testing, components and workmanship will ensure only the highest level of work is carried out to meet our lifetime warranty standards. Due to our extremely high standards we work very closely with dealerships and specialists, offering a better solution to replacement.

Take it back to the dealer and ask him nicely to take the car to someone to get the upgrade done also take a family member/friend preferably big and male and ask for that or your money back. Don't be afraid to mention trading standards if things don't appear to be going well.

Transmission malfunction, do not shift gears, consult workshop

  • Add to quote

Hi Guys , I am from Sydney Australia and I bought a cla250 in 2019. It had done 46,000 km at that time. Now it has done over 120,000km. In June 2022 this year, after I got it serviced at a workshop called eurowerke, which I have been to them previously as wel, they are specialising in European car mechanics, on the same day, at night time when I was driving, my car at the traffic light as I was turning right, went into N automatically and I could not drive. It said transmission malfunction and followed by do not shift gears take it to workshop. I pressed ok and then the message went away, after a few seconds I was able to drive. It didn’t happen for a week and then same thing again. From there, it started happening every day. I took it to eurowerke again and they said it could be the battery, I changed the battery with a brand new one and the problem still there. I took it back to them and they investigated further and told me that the entire Transmission needs replacing, the parts were called TS CTRR electrohyd costing $2400. So needed the entire ECU/module replaced. + labor which came to a total of $4000. I paid the amount and got the vehicle fixed and the entire transmission replaced. after a week of getting the car back, the same problem happened again today at the traffic light, it went into N, the message came transmission malfunction, do not shift gears take it to workshop. After I pressed ok and waited a few seconds then I was able to drive again. so please if anyone can help me as to whats happening, what should I do next, should get my money back and take it to Mercedes’ dealer ? Should get eurowerke to look at it again? Why is this happening after spending $4000, Changed battery all that and getting a new transmission put in. P.s. other issues while this was going on was the car would lurch at times, the gear shifting was not smooth at times, the start/stop icon would randomly come on the dashboard, the acceleration would be slow.

Hi everyone, Please I need your help. My 2007 B200 suddenly started showing Transmission visit workshop. It has never for once happened to me. I did a scan through my own diagnostic CPU and attached below is what I got from my diagnostic. What's the next thing to do? Is it the ECU that needs reprogramming or what?

Before panicking, get your battery fully charged with a trickle charger. You can do it in situ without removing the battery if its more convenient. The first fault refers to under voltage, and that could be the cause of the other codes as well. So fully charge the battery, clear the codes and start the car and see what , if any codes return.

Don't assume new batteries are fully charged, especially if they've been sat around on a shelf for some time. Low battery voltage plays havoc with Mercedes' systems.

Transmission

Quality transmission service in santa clara.

Your vehicle’s transmission is one of its most complicated and important components. Due to its complexity, it is very important that you get regular transmission service performed on your vehicle. If your transmission fails, not only is it very dangerous, but it is also very costly to pay for transmission repair.

engine of car

Signs of a Failing Transmission

There are a few telltale signs of a failing transmission which you should be aware of:

Check Engine Light: If you have a check engine light on it could be an indication of an issue with your transmission. Bring it in for a free check engine light diagnosis. Leaking transmission fluid: This is one of the easiest signs to look out for. You might notice transmission fluid has leaked underneath your car in your garage or driveway. Transmission fluid is bright red and is quite sweet smelling. Odd sounds: If you have a manual transmission, you might notice a grinding sound when you switch into a new gear. If you have an automatic transmission, you might notice the car stuttering into each gear rather than smoothly transitioning.

Service and Repair

Whatever kind of transmission you have, Autoland can service it here. Whether you have an automatic transmission, manual transmission, or a CVT transmission, we can have it running as smoothly as the day the car was purchased. Our expert mechanics will carefully evaluate your issue and make some good recommendations for you. If your car has less than 200,000 miles, then doing a transmission rebuild may be your best option – we will only replace what is broken based on your budget.

Transmission Maintenance

Having your vehicle’s transmission regularly maintained and serviced is important. Regular maintenance can also help you to save money in the long-run. Paying for maintenance is significantly cheaper than having to purchase an all-new transmission for your car. For example, our auto shop can do a transmission fluid flush and replacement. We are committed to giving you the best possible deal on your car’s transmission; this is why we are prepared to price match any written estimate for a transmission rebuild from another shop.

Transmission Rebuild FAQs

Your vehicle can’t function properly without a healthy transmission system, which means that any potential problems need to be responded to right away. In some cases, you can simply replace any defective components in your transmission; in other cases, you’ll need to replace your system entirely. If your transmission needs to be rebuilt, you can find the services you need at Autoland. Our team of experienced car technicians has been serving the Santa Clara community for more than three decades. Autoland offers expert car repair services to customers in the greater Santa Clara area, including San Jose, Sunnyvale, Cupertino, and Palo Alto. We also offer free towing services if you’re within five miles of our shop. If your transmission system needs a professional’s touch, bring your vehicle in so we can diagnose the problem and advise you on your best options. If you need a rebuilt transmission, we will match any other shop’s price.

  • Should I have my transmission rebuilt or replaced?  This depends partly on the age of your vehicle, and on how many miles you have put on it. With vehicles that have 200,000 miles or fewer, the option most often recommended is to replace worn or defective parts and rebuild the system. If your mileage is significantly higher than that, however, it’s usually recommended that you simply replace your transmission system.
  • What is a transmission rebuild?  You may have wondered whether there is a difference between a transmission rebuild and a transmission replacement. With a transmission rebuild, your system will be taken apart, thoroughly checked, and reassembled with new components in place of any worn or defective parts. With a transmission replacement, all of your system’s parts are replaced.
  • How can I tell when my transmission system needs work?  If there’s an issue with your vehicle’s transmission system, you should take it to the auto shop for an inspection. Warning signs of a transmission problem include slow or difficult shifting, unusual sounds when you shift, and fluid leaking from your engine.
  • What are the advantages of a transmission rebuild?  If your car technician recommends that you have your transmission system rebuilt, there are a number of benefits to going with this option. Rebuilding your transmission is less expensive than replacing it, and it can be done much more quickly. Keep in mind that a rebuild isn’t the same as a simple repair—it involves a complete inspection of every component of your transmission.

B200 CVT playing up. Help?

  • Add to quote

Hello all. This is my first post so please be gentle with me! I have had a B200 with CVT since new in 2006, which has about 74K kms on clock. Has been a great car but in the last month or so have had problems with transmission and my mechanic and myself have been trying to work out what the problem is. Consistently, within the first 10 minutes after start up, the transmission will jerk and a warning message saying 'Transmission visit workshop' or similar will come up. The car then goes into 'limp home' mode. It stills drives but seems to stay in the one gear. Has very limited acceleration. Stopping the engine and restarting makes the warning message go away. Hard acceleration will make it go back into limp mode. An engine restart temporarily fixes the problem each time. If I keep driving in 'limp home' mode for about 10 minutes (which is really jerky), it seems to warm up. If I then restart the engine, the problem disappears. My mechanic seems to think it is a problem with the electronics module - which is horrendously expensive to fix. Any suggestions or others with this problem? many thanks

mmmm 189 people have looked and no answers. Not sure whether that means it has not happened to anyone else (although there are similar threads for different Mercs) or whether it is a tricky problem. Anyone keen to step up to the plate and have a go?

Is your car still under warranty? 74000km should still cover you if you are below 4 years. If not I would go the dealer where you bought the car and ask at least to partially participate on the cost because your car has so little kms. Did you had all recalls done? There were some updates for 2006 done at the dealer software updates.

I know a guy in Kemtpville Ontario who had a B 200 CVT die on him at about 60K km, the unit was not repairable and it was replaced with a new one. You should push for a free repair even if your warranty has timed out.

Any news about this, Santiago?

CVT Problem - update As the originator of this thread, thought I would update you on what has happened. My mechanic said he could not fix it so I had to take it to the official Mercedes Stealer. They charged me AUD 136 to look at it. They said they found faults relating to RPM sensor, tested and found internal fault with valve body/control unit. Vehicle requires new valve body/control unit. This will cost AUD $4950!!!! Amazing really when you consider that, after driving it and having the 'transmission fault, visit workshop' message come up. Drive for further 5km. Switch off and then restart, the car will then perform faultlessly. Surely there can't be anything mechanically wrong. Anyone have any similar experiences or suggest anything that may help? many thanks

B200 2006 Transmission Hello I just got the same problem about two weeks ago. Brought into the Mercedes dealership it took over a week and came back that I needed a brand new transmission at a cost of $12700 after taxes. They had never seen this code before and needed to consult with Germany on this. This is with 140k km and Mercedes mentioned that they would cover half the cost. I said no thank you as I could not understand why after restarting the vehicle each time the problem would go away, this has happened 3 times since. I brought it to another mechanic who asked one of his friends who works at mercedes and they could no longer find a problem, so I am now driving with no repeat problems yet. To me this sounds more like a module/sensor problem than mechanical. The concern I have is that when you need to accererate it may not if this warning comes up, so I think they know what the problem is but would create a recall. So time to get rid of this vehicle, found out that this is built on the PT27 platform from the Chrysler days. keep us posted to any more updates thanks this posting helps

Oh no, what a horrorshow. Sorry that this is happening to you guys. Apparently CVTs are not easily rebuilt, so aftermarket repairs are probably out of the question.

Hi pseudoguru, What is ur driviing habit on this CVT? usually Manual or Auto? Kenny

CVT Auto or Manual? Kenny I normally drive in Auto. When the problem began, I tried using it in manual mode figuring that the auto was not sending a clear signal and hoping that by using manual it would not change gear until it was told to! However, it didn't help and the problem occurs irrespective of which mode it is in. Pseudoguru

Acceleration Lag - CVT or Electrical? Hi everybody. I've just signed up and these threads seem fantastic. I have an '06 B200T w/ CVT which is having problems accelerating. It does so, but very slowly. I can hear the turbo whistling but it seems that power is not being delivered. There's a bit of history to go with this which may be related: I had a wheel bearing changed at a garage which caused the ABS light to come on. I was told that everything was okay and the light could only be reset at the dealer. I thought I would do so at my next visit and continued to drive with the ABS light. The ABS light comes on only after I start driving, not if the vehicle idles in park. An odd side effect is that the fuel needle will drop to empty about a minute after the ABS error is displayed (although fuel consumption is still accurately displayed). After a few days of leaving the shop, I noticed that as I approached 120kph on the highway the car would stop accelerating even irrespective of how much gas was applied (it feels like a speed limiter). Everything else was fine so I continued to drive like this since I had no need to exceed 120. Today, however, my acceleration has been greatly reduced to the point that I'm holding up traffic before I get up to speed. I'm not sure if this is all related but suspect that it is. I'll be going to the dealer after the holiday to get their opinion. Any ideas?

HI, I know this is an older thread but I had the same problem, it was the right hand wheel speed sensor/ABS counter causing the issue. Fixed for £20.00, fuel guage now reads and all related faults went away. The wheel sensors are used by the car to determine the gear needed as well as MPH to engine speed to give you distance left in the tank and current MPG,and ABS and wheel slip, so it decides to throw its toys out of the pram when the info from the sensor/s is not as expected or has failed. Re set by itself after 5 miles of fitting the sensor.

I'd take it to the stealer to do a diagnose...

According to the 'Honest John' website based in UK, these CVT boxes are known to start failing after as few as 40k miles. The box and technology is similar if not identical (made by ZF, IIRC) to that fitted in European Ford Focus auto models. These were so bad that even Ford dealers would not take even sound vehicles so fitted as trade-ins. I sold my B200 CDI for this reason, much to the relief of my trusted auto mechanic.

mayorofnewark said: ...much to the relief of my trusted auto mechanic. Click to expand...

The 5 speed manual transaxle seems OK....touch wood!

B150 Sport CVT with 40000km here and no problems so far.

I haven't spoken to a Benz salesman or tech yet that will admit to there being a class problem with the CVT box - but undoubtedly there is one, just like Ford, Audi, Honda and Nissan have had/are still having with CVT boxes of similar/identical design. The Benz "Autotronic" transmission was developed by DaimlerChrysler in conjunction with the Bosch subsidiary Van Doorne's Transmissie (VDT). VDT also developed the disastrous Ford CVT. The Benz box uses Bosch bits, as did the Ford, including the steel belt.

A bit more info: a chatty Benz tech today sorting a snag on my R Class let slip that the CVTs are suffering quite a few failures from 35k miles on. The harder driven, the more torque-y the engine, the more chance of early failure, so all you B200 CDi boy racers better look out, and if you keep the vehicle after the 3 year warranty expires, keep buying the Benz warranty extension. The replacement As and Bs will have a more conventional auto box, it seems (but probably not a 7-Gmatic!).

Hmm, interesting. And doubly interesting that the Turbo, for which the cvt works well due to its low down grunt, is more likely to kill it. So: three generations ago, part of our family emmigrated to Canada from Newark.

I saw a 2006 B 200 at Three Point Motors in Nanaimo in which the drivetrain had been removed. I would speculate that it was a CVT failure....but of course I'm not sure.

"Transmission visit workshop" Hi everyone, I've had my B200CDI for five years now and have covered 60,000 miles. Last night on my way home I too encountered the dreaded "Transmission visit workshop" warning message and went into limp home mode. I was less than a mile away from a "Mercedes Direct" show room, so I dropped in hoping they had a tech guy onsite. They did and he put the car on the star diagnostics. He was able to clear the fault but was unable to offer anything else except to book it in at a service centre if the fault should reoccur. I think the metal band on the CVT is in need of adjustment anyway as its very lazy getting into gear during the cold spells. Ite even worse if in "S" mode. I was going to mention this at its next service. I was considering changing cars later this year, but I think this decsion may be brought forward after reading the thread here. I have to say though, after sorting out a few niggles on the car I've been pretty pleased with it up to date. Ross.

Have found a fix! Took my B200 in to the Mercedes dealer and paid them $136 to have them check it! They said that they found faults relating to the RPM sensor and also found internal fault with the Valve Body/Control Unit. They said it required a new Valve Body/Control Unit. Quote was $4950. Took it to my own mechanic who did quite a bit if research. He stripped down the transmission valve body unit down, had it lasercut open to remove the electronics (which are encased in silicon) and then had the circuitry repaired. Total cost $1370. Car now going well for just over 1/4 cost of Mercedes quote. If anyone else has this problem, my mechanic (in Sydney) is happy to chat with you about his fix. thanks for all your help

"pseudoguru" thanks for posting your fix. Don't suppose your mechanic would come over to the UK! Seriously though I could do with someone from the UK to post who has a more local fix and a price. It played up again last night and I now have no confidence in the car and have resorted to using the wifes Peugeot. Like others I'm trying to understand why the gearbox works smoothly until the warning message comes up and then works fine again after you turn off the engine and then restart. I'm not able to post again until later in February as I'm away on business, but I'll try and drop by the forum later after 22nd Feb. Thanks.

I hope the repair lasts. The Australians are an ingenious people, evidently, I have seen it in the Peugeot forums too (Aussiefrogs).

Hi there, very interested in your mechanics details, we have the same problem with our 2006 b180 cdi looking at $6500 to fix...........I like the idea of a holiday to sydney, I look forward to your reply

Sydney Mechanic's details Hello all. Not sure where you posters live but my mechanic is in Sydney Australia. He has spent a lot of time on my behalf working out a fix for this CVT issue. Interesting that this has identified many similar instances. My mechanic's name is Andrew Brundu and his email is <[email protected]> and phone number 61 2 9331 1478. He is currently looking at a dodgy oxygen sensor on my B200 causing it to splutter

Hello benz-companions, first post on this forum for me, triggered by the 'transmission - visit workshop' on the display of my B200 cdi (2005 165.000 km. Own it since april 2010, great car, no problems until now) Same story as above: cold engine, display-message, drive in emergency-mode to a safe place to stop, take the key out for a minute, start again and drive without problems to destination. Well, visit workshop.... My mechanic couldn’t see any error messages when he diagnosed the board computer. Atf was changed at 114.000 km, filter unknown (maybe never) so that’s step 1: new atf and new filter. That didn’t solve the problem, yesterday on my way back home again the transmission-warning and in nood-mode to the side of the road. And worse, I heard a low, fast bonking’ sound that wasn’t there before. Not while driving but only in idle mode, that’s when you really going to hate traffic lights. Today I went by the man who sold me the Mercedes. With his equipment he saw the error message: “0793 het toerentalsignaal van component y3/964 secundaire snelheidssensor cvt is niet beschikbaar” translated: 0793 the rpm-signal from component y3/964 secundairy speedsensor cvt is not accessible. I was redirected to a tranny-specialist nearby, he was willing look at the car and see what was wrong: only the electronic brain or also mechanical trouble. He told my what a lucky guy I was to visit his workshop, specialist in airco and transmission, he recognized the noise as worn out rubbers on the airco-pump! A few 100 km more and I should need a new pump. Fix it was an hour work, the rubbers were on stock. Great guy, Mobiliteitscentrum Thomassen in Lunteren, remember the name when you have a tranny or airco problem in the Netherlands. And the transmission: it’s hard to diagnose something that occurs on such irregular times. In the last 3 weeks it happened 4 or 5 times. Leave the car in that workshop 100 km from home and hope the problem with the tranny occurs sometime, tomorrow or in 3 weeks? Is no option. I keep on driving it and when the “Transmission visit workshop” shows more often I will bring the car for further diagnose and repair. Or could there be a relation between the tranny problem and worn out rubbers on the airco-pump?? Little miracle and don’t have to spend 1000nds euro’s on an new tranny-brain or even a new tranny?? That’s all for now, will keep you informed.

well, you could just drive in 'limp mode' to the mechanic next time the error appears, and don't turn off your car-let them catch it. Alternatively (although I'm not sure that it will tell you the error code), you can get one of these (only for Android phones): https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=38354

  1. A170 CVT Transmission Visit Workshop

A170 CVT Transmission Visit Workshop. I had the dreaded "transmission visit workshop" come up over the weekend. A scan of the codes turned up four errors to do with the shift solenoids (attached). I've taken it to an independent mechanic who has said it needs a new ECU. Having already done some research before the visit I'a a bit skeptical.
