If you are planning to go to the UK on holiday, then you would apply for the Standard Visitor Visa which will be issued as either:

• Single entry – you will be permitted to enter the UK once during the visa dates
• Multiple entry – you will be permitted to enter the UK as many times as you wish before the visa expires

You may apply up to 3 months ahead of your departure date and applications are processed within 15 working days. Apply as soon as you can to avoid disappointment!

How to apply for a UK visa from Bangladesh

There are a number of steps that you’ll need to follow to apply for your UK visa from Bangladesh. You can see these steps by going to VFS Global’s website .

Step 1 – Research your visa type

To apply online for your visa application, you must do the following things:

• Register your application
• Complete the visa application form
• Pay the visa fee
• Book your appointment at VFS Global

Step 3 – Pay your visa fees

Depending on which visa application center you choose, there may be a range of additional services offered, such as application and document checks. For more information about this, please refer to VFS Global’s website.

Step 5 – Upload your supporting documents

When applying for a UK visa, there are certain documents that you have to provide.

All documents must be originals. No photocopies will be accepted.

If you submit a document that is not in English or Welsh, it must be accompanied by a full translation. Each translated document must contain:

• Confirmation from the translator that it is an accurate translation of the original document
• The date of the translation
• The translator’s full name and signature
• The translator’s contact details

Documents include:

• Valid travel document (national passport or other document that allows the holder to travel internationally)
• Previous travel documents/passports, which show previous travel
• Proof of sufficient funds – bank statements or letter from relative etc
• Proof of earnings such as a letter from employer confirming employment details (start date of employment, salary, role, company contact details)
• Confirmation of legal residence
• Proof of flight reservation (when you complete your application, the document checklist will specify whether you need to provide this document)
• Proof of accommodation such as a hotel booking (when you complete your application, the document checklist will specify whether you need to provide this document)
• Details of employment or studies – a letter from your employer or education provider. If self-employed: business registration documents
• Proof of any business activities (if applicable)
• Under 18s – birth certificate, parent’s authority to travel alone and parent’s passport
• Letter from doctor with details of medical treatment (if applicable)
• Letter of invitation from event organisers, relatives, company etc
• Marriage certificate

The documents required are different for each type of visa, so you should have a look at the full list of requirements before preparing your documents, so you don’t miss anything. If you fail to provide all the necessary paperwork, it could mean your application will be rejected.

• Upload your documents from home, prior to your appointment
• Choose VFS Global’s scanning service whereby they will upload your documents on your behalf

If you’re planning to obtain your flight reservation for visa without paying for the ticket, all you have to do is follow the 3 simple steps below:

• Visit the Visa Reservation website to choose the right package
•  Submit the travel details and make the payment online
• Receive flight itinerary in email

Step 6 – Visit the visa application center

On the day you visit the application center, remember the following things:

• You must attend the appointment for your visa application. You cannot send someone in your place
• Arrive 15 minutes early
• Take the document checklist (which you would have received as part of your online application)
• Take a valid passport or travel document with at least 1 page that is blank on both sides
• Upload your documents (if you have not already done so)

You will also submit your fingerprints and photograph. This is known as biometric information and is required for your visa application to be processed.

Step 7 – Track your application

Once you have submitted your application and documents and visited the visa application center, you will receive an email when a decision has been made and your passport has been returned to the visa application center. However, if you want more detailed tracking information, you can choose VFS Global’s SMS service.

Step 8 – Pick up your documents

•  Collect your passport in-person – you need to take the receipt issued by the visa application center and a form of ID
• Have your passport returned by courier – you need to have purchased a courier service from VFS Global

You’ll also get a letter with the result of your application. The letter will explain what you need to do next. The outcome of your application will be either:

• Approved – your visa will be attached to your passport. If you notice any errors with the visa, you must report it to UK visas and immigration immediately
• Rejected – you will receive an explanation as to why your application was refused and will explain whether you have the right to an administrative review or an immigration decision appeal

The following reasons may result in a rejected application:

• Hotel booking not provided – not all applicants have to provide a hotel booking, it depends on your nationality and reason for traveling to the UK. You should check the specific requirements before you submit your application
• Spelling errors on the application form – make sure your spelling is correct, so check the information you are giving when completing your online application
• Insufficient funds – you must be able to afford your trip as well as the cost of your flight home, so provide documents, such as bank statements, that will show you have enough money

If you want to visit the UK from Bangladesh, there are several UK Visit visa types you can choose from. These visas are tailored to meet your purpose of entering the UK on a short-term basis. The following are the subcategories of the UK Visit visa include:

Tourist and Family Visit Visa

This is one of the Standard Visitor visas designed for Bangladeshi citizens who want to enter the UK for a short-stay visit, especially to see a family member or friend. This visa also suits individuals who want to enter the UK for a short holiday.

The Tourist visa allows its holder to stay in the UK for up to 180 days (6 months). If you are entering the UK in a group, each individual is required to apply separately. The visa does not offer a route to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the UK.

Creative Visit Visa

If you are a musician, entertainer, or professional artist, you can obtain a Creative Visit visa to enter the UK. This visa will allow you to take up permitted unpaid creative activities during the 6 month validity period of the Creative Visit visa.

All applicants for this visa must apply individually. This visa does not also support ILR or settlement status in the UK.

Sports Visit Visa

This visa is designed for sports authorities, technical or support personnel of athletes, amateur and professional athletes (individuals and teams) who want to enter the UK for authorised unpaid sports activities.

When you enter the UK with this visa you are allowed to stay for 6 months in the UK. You will not be allowed to remain in the country indefinitely, and all applicants must apply individually as a single application is not allowed.

Business Visit Visa

If you wish to enter the UK from Bangladesh for an unpaid business activity, you can apply for a UK Business Visit visa .

This visa allows its holder to enter the UK and stay for a permitted short-term business trip that can last for a temporary period of up to 6 months. This visa does not offer a route to permanent residency in the UK and all applications must be made separately.

Study Visit Visa

If you obtain the UK Study Visit visa , you all be allowed to enter the UK for up to 6 months of study, research (or research tuition) or an elective related to a study programme received abroad. This visa does not offer a route to permanent residency status in the UK. Also, each individual entering the UK via this visa must obtain a separate visa.

Religious Visit Visa

This visa is designed for individuals who want to enter the UK to carry out religious work. These works are typically pastoral and are only valid for up to 6 months. This visa does not offer a route to permanent residency in the UK and all applicants must apply separately.

Permitted Paid Engagement Visit Visa

The Permitted Paid Engagement (PPE) Visit Visa is designed for experts who want to enter the UK to take up an engagement that is paid for in their line of work. This visa permits only 1 month stay in the UK. Applicants are not allowed to apply in a group, hence, each applicant must apply individually. This visa does not lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK.

Private Medical Treatment Visit Visa

This visa is designed for applicants who want to get private medical care, donate organs, or be evaluated as a possible organ donor for an identified UK recipient. If you are entering the UK to receive private medical treatment, you may be allowed to stay in the country for 6 to 11 months.

All individuals coming into the UK via this route must apply for a separate visa to be allowed into the country. Also, just like every other UK Standard Visitor visa, this visa does not offer a route to settlement in the UK.

Marriage or Civil Partnership Visit Visa

This visa is intended for people who want to enter the UK to be married, enter into a civil partnership, or announce a marriage or relationship. Even when travelling in a group, each visitor must submit a separate application and this visa does not result in settlement in the UK.

Bangladeshi citizens who want to obtain a UK Visit visa must meet some eligibility requirements that include the following. You are required to:

• Show that you intend to depart the UK once your UK Visit visa expires.
• Provide evidence of having enough financial means to cater for yourself while in the UK. If your trip is sponsored by someone, you must bring a letter of sponsorship to prove it.
• Present a round-trip flight ticket to prove that you already have arrangements in place to return to Bangladesh.
• Prove that you only intend to stay in the UK for a while and have no plans to remain in the country for a long period by visiting frequently.

There are other eligibility requirements you may be required to meet if you’re entering the UK as a senior doctor, academic, or for medical treatment, etc.

Required Documents for a UK Visit Visa

The documents required for a UK Visit visa from Bangladesh depend on the reason you want to enter the UK. To apply for a UK Visit visa, you may be required to include:

• Your Bangladeshi international passport. It must be valid for 6 months beyond the date of your intended departure. It must be issued to you within the last 10 years and must have at least 2 blank pages where your visa will be attached.
• Your visa application form. Fill out your application form online with block letters.
• Two passport-sized photographs
• Tour plan. It should tell your travel plan, the places you wish to go, for how long your trip will last and other details.
• Office ID card. Provide copies of your office visit or ID card.
• Cover letter. This should explain your purpose of visiting the UK, who is responsible for the trip, your details, and so on.
• Company Memorandum. Provide your company memorandum if you are the managing director or owner of the company.
• Personal Income Tax Return (ITR) certificate. Provide your last 3 years’ income tax return certificate.
• Company ITR certificate. Provide the ITR of the company you have worked for in the last 3 years.
• Round-trip flight ticket. This should explain your trip schedule of entry and departure from the UK.
• Personal bank statements. Provide your bank statement for the past 6 months.
• Company bank statements. Get the bank statement of a company that wants to sponsor your trip. The bank statement should bear the bank’s name, telephone number, stamp and signature.
• Tuberculosis test certificate.
• Evidence of accommodation. You must prove that you will not be stranded when you enter the UK from Bangladesh. You must, therefore, provide proof of a booked hotel reservation or any place you will stay while in the UK.

Bangladeshi citizens who want to enter the UK on a Visit visa are required to pay some fees to obtain the visa. Note that there are Long-term Standard Visitor visas that will allow you to visit the UK regularly.

This visa could be valid for up to 2, 5 or 10 years and you are permitted to stay in the UK for up to 6 months per visit. You are required to pay the UK visa fee for Bangladeshi applicants when applying. You will:

• Pay £115 for a Standard Visitor visa that lasts for up to 6 months.
• If you are entering the UK for medical reasons to stay for up to 11 months, you must pay £200 for a Standard Visitor visa.
• Pay £200 for a Standard Visitor visa that lasts for up to 12 months if you are entering the UK for academic purposes.
• Pay £400 for a Standard Visitor visa that lasts for up to 2 years. You are allowed to stay for 6 months for each visit.
• To obtain a Standard Visitor visa that lasts for up to 5 years you will pay £771. Your total stay period for each visit is 6 months.
• Pay £963 for a Standard Visitor visa that allows you to stay in the UK for 10 years, with a 6-month total stay period per visit.

You may pay £1,000 to apply for an extension of your stay. Note that there are other fees that you may pay while applying, such as:

• Consular fees.
• Translation fees (to translate your documents from Bengali into English).
• Courier fees.
• Legal fees and so on.

• EEA Family Permit / EU Settlement Scheme family permit - if your spouse is living and working in the UK and is an EU national but does not have UK citizenship.
• Unmarried partners visa - if you are not married officially to a UK national but have lived together for two years.
• Same-sex partners visa - If you are same-sex partners, have already registered your marriage to a UK national or for unmarried partners, if you have lived together for two years.

Types Of UK Visas Available For Bangladeshi Citizens 

The UK offers a huge range of visas for Bangladeshi but that doesn’t typically mean you can apply for all of them together. It’s crucial to carefully choose the visa that exactly fits your objective before moving forward with your application.

1. Work Visas

If you wish to stay and work in the UK then you will need to go for work Visas. They offer many different types of work visas in both short term and long term periods. 

Now, do keep in mind each of these visa categories have their own set of requirements. The most common type of work visa includes.

• Skilled Worker Visa (Tier 2)

The skilled worker visa was previously known as Tier 2 visa in the UK and it depends on skills like engineering, health care specialists, senior officers in fire, social service managers and more. In the case of diplomats it can be up to 5 years; you can extend the length of visa if required but you cannot settle down permanently.

Just like a skilled work visa, this category of visa also requires 3-4 weeks time for final decision. But it is suggested to apply at least 3 months beforehand.

• High Potential Individual (HPI) visa

Under this visa you will have the permission to work full time until your visa expires.

Depending on your degree, the length of visa varies; if you are done with a PhD then you will receive a 3 year visa but for other degrees it is 2 years. 

Do keep in mind, you cannot extend this visa after expiry but you will have the option to switch to a different visa category. Your spouse can also apply for this visa as a dependent. 

You can apply before 3 months for this category of visa and can take anywhere between 3-5 weeks for the final decision.

2. Student Visa

Student visa or previously known as Tier 5 is a visa issued for students who are interested in pursuing a degree in any UK based institutions. 

Under the new Graduate Visa pathway, those who complete an accepted programme in the UK will be permitted to stay in the country for up to two years to live, work, and hunt for employment.

If you are over 18 and pursuing a degree level course then you will be granted a 5 years visa. But with any courses below degree level you will receive a 2 years visa. 

It takes usually 3 weeks for the final decision but you can apply well before 6 months of your course start date and it is suggested to apply beforehand to make sure you receive the visa on time.

3. Visit or Tourist Visa

If you wish to visit the UK just for vacation and spend some quality time then you will need a Visit or Tourist visa. This is one of the most commonly applied visas for Bangladeshi citizens. 

Under a tourist visa you won’t be able to work and the sole purpose of this visa is to visit the UK and enjoy it. But you do have the option to take short courses in this time like for 6 months.

For tourist or visit visa, you will get 6 months of visa but you can extend it a bit more under certain circumstances and UK immigration will decide if your visa can be extended or not.

You can apply before 6 months of your required visa time and can take between 3-5 weeks for the final decision.

4. Business Visitor Visa

Foreign nationals from non-EEA nations, including Bangladesh, are permitted to travel to the UK for certain business purposes with a business visitor visa. The business visitor visa is usually for you if you need to travel for attending business meetings, conferences, seminars or anything related.

The requirements for a business visiting visa vary slightly depending on the category. 

The visa length is usually offered up to 6 months just like visitor visa but if needed you have the option to extend it.

5. Family Visa

You can be qualified for a Family Visa to travel from Bangladesh to the UK to be with your family members if they are British nationals or lawful permanent residents. Spouse visa and civil partnership visa are also considered family visas. 

• Spouse Visa

If your spouse is an Irish, British, or resident of the UK, you may apply for a spousal visa. For instance, they possess documentation of permanent residency, established status, or indefinite license to remain.

• Civil Partnership Visa

State Minister calls on UK govt to ease visa for Bangladeshi workers

State Minister for Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Shafiqur Rahman Choudhury MP has called on the UK government to ease visa conditions for Bangladeshi restaurant workers who want to work in the UK’s hospitality and catering sectors.

Shafiqur Rahman Choudhury MP was speaking as a chief guest at a high profile dialogue hosted on Thursday by the UK’s All-party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Bangladesh.

Bangladesh High Commissioner to the UK Saida Muna Tasneem, Bob Blackman MP and APPG vice-chair Lord Karan Bilimoria spoke at the event while APPG on Bangladesh Chair Rushanara Ali MP chaired the dialogue.

The state minister praised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her visionary leadership in transforming Bangladesh into a prosperous nation, as well as her government's ongoing efforts to improve the well-being and welfare of Bangladeshis living around the world, including those in the UK.

He also noted that the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and the UK have reached new heights in the last 15 years due to the progressive foreign policy of her government. However, he said that there are still many areas to be explored to further broaden and deepen the Bangladesh-UK long-standing historic relations.

He particularly mentioned that Bangladeshi restaurants in different UK cities and towns are facing severe skilled staff shortages as the UK raised the minimum annual salary to £3,800, an amount that is not affordable for many restaurant owners.

The state minister requested the UK Government to lower the minimum annual salary for the people working in the hospitality sector. He also said Bangladesh can provide skilled construction workers and farm workers who can work in the UK as seasonal workers.

The state minister hoped that the Bangladesh Government would work together with the UK government to create more job opportunities for the Bangladeshi skilled workers, including restaurant workers, doctors, and nurses.

High Commissioner Saida Muna Tasneem has said that the Bangladesh High Commission, London is working towards providing more job opportunities for skilled Bangladeshi workers in the UK.

She noted that many caregivers from Bangladesh have been recruited in the UK over the past few years. Additionally, the recruitment of seasonal farm workers from Bangladesh has also commenced.

Rushanara Ali MP made a welcome speech at the event praising the state minister for his contribution to strengthening the bonding between the British-Bangladeshi community and their homeland Bangladesh.

High UK Parliamentary officials and eminent members of the British-Bangladeshi community attended the event.

Earlier, the state minister attended an event organised by the British Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce.

People wishing to apply for a UK visa will be able to use the On Demand Mobile Visa (ODMV) service which allows applicants who are residing in Dhaka to submit their UK visa application much closer to home.

The Dhaka ODMV is part of UK Visas and Immigration’s proactive approach to constant improvement in customer service.

The ODMV uses the UK Visas and Immigration’s mobile Biometric Enrolment System (BES) equipment to take biometric data (finger scans and digital photograph). This service is delivered by the UK Visas and Immigration’s commercial partner, VFS Global.

British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Alison Blake said:

UK Visas and Immigration seeks constantly to improve the service we offer. I am delighted to announce that the UK is the first country to launch the VFS Global mobile facility in Bangladesh. This service allows Bangladeshis to submit their visa application and biometric data outside our current network of Visa Application Centres. For customers in Dhaka, it means they no longer have to travel to the Visa Application Centre in Dhaka to submit their applications. Bangladesh and Britain are close friends and partners and this development is a further step in enabling stronger people-to-people relationships.
