So I called the morning of and was told we would be departing at 7pm not 5pm. This meant arriving at midnight instead of 10pm. Not the end of the world. Unfortunately, that was not the case. The driver did called as I was told he would ten minutes before arriving. I was picked up shortly after 7pm. I was then told that the rest of the passengers were being picked up at the airport. Well there flight would not land for over another hour. We waited at the gas station for about an hour and then got the call to come and pick them up. Off we went. After everyone was loaded, we seemed to be making a stop to drop off the guy at their offices who had gathered them all at the airport. We dropped him off and were then told that we would not be taking that bus, we had to take another one as they now needed this one in the AM. The kicker was the bus they wanted us to go in was not there. So now we all waited for this new bus to appear. It arrived without gas and then finally after 9pm, we set off for Belgrade. Two to four hours late, depending on how you count it. I found a post on here that seems to have faced a similar surprise departure time, so this does not seem at all like an unusual situation. Thankfully the departure was later and not earlier, I would have been quite annoyed to have had my time in Budapest cut short.

Once we actually left, it was five hours to Belgrade. The driver was very nice and did his best and hustled in the face of this very unfortunate situation that was no fault of his own. The drive was fine and if they just did what they said they would I would be writing a glowing review. They would do better to just schedule one or two departures per day and then you would know when you were actually leaving. If you have a flexible schedule, it works, but if you are on a schedule, this is not the right option.

Thanks for this reviews, APS101

It's a bit worrying, I have commented regulaly here that my information is that they get the job done but are very laid back on communication and customer service, I'd expect an hour delay but not what you have described and not this amount of drops and pickups.

They need to improve, as you said it's maybe fine if flexible but this is not very good, problem is the train isn't much any quicker even with these delays.

I'd say it's down to GEA tours to improve as others will come into the market if they don't.

' class=

Timing with them is relative. You say at what hour you would like to depart. One day before the departure day they call you to say the time the driver will pick y0u up.

1) Timisoara to Belgrade. We said we wanted to leave at 7. We got picked up at 7:15 am. Drove 2 km then switched cars . We moved into a mini bus owned by another serbian trasnport company. The driver took the long way to Belgrade by Jimbolia (not by Moravita). The driver drove quite slow (50-55 km/h) , i think the main reason is because he had a tachograph.

Our tickets, which the driver wrote himself, were for Belgrade City, not for airport. Yet the driver forgot to drop us off in the city, he was taking us with the other passengers to the airport. Luckily I spotted the West Gate of the city and, knowing that it was on the way to the airport, told the driver to stop. :D

2) Belgrade to Timisoara. We wanted to leave at noon. They called us and told the driver would pick us up at 2pm. We were picked up at 3pm. We left the city and stopped in the first gas station as they told us we had to wait there another hour for another passenger (later we found out that that other passenger was forgotten by GEA at the airport for 3 hours). So after one hour of waiting we finally got going.

Before reaching the border we found out that GEA Tours no longer has a public transportation permit. That meant that they cannot cross the border with passengers in the car . We left the car at the serbian border and then crossed the border on foot (which is illegal unless you live in the first village near the border), carrying our luggage. Other tourist were staring at us from their cars , customs officers were looking inquisitive at us. It was really uncomfortable. After the romanian customs we got in another car in which we barely fit in and drove to Timisoara where we arrived at 9pm. The driver was not paying attention to the road / traffic.

Next time I will go to Belgrade with my own car .

that is what i call playing with stress..something you don't need on vacation.

So far so good.

What causing me some stress is when you want to move out of Belgrade going to either Sarajevo or Zagreb. Transportation is not easy. No decent train, airfare are unusually expensive..

than you have GEO tour...and you read this thread. !

Might as well go to Munich from Zurich instead.

Seriously..if GEO tour is not good anymore, train is not good..what's left if you want to move around the area ?

Bus is another option, slow (or recklesly fast) and a bit hot and smelly ;-)

You pose a wider issue/concern that I will try to answer at length for you whilst giving a wider message to anyone else who stumbles across this thread and finds negative comments off putting..........

If you want to come to Belgrade you will experience a totally different culture to the rest of Europe, personally I love it and most visitors want to return so the first leg of your trip to fly Zurich to Belgrade is recommended but for travellers not seeking theme parks and tourist attractions, visitors come to embrace the local history and culture, you must expect a living city rather than a tourist attraction and there are economic issues that impact on life, as a visitor in the city you won't see it much as lots of glitzy shops, bars and nightlife but once you take public transport and move out it becomes obvious, you either embrace it and enjoy true wealth of culture or you chase materialism and get frustrated IMO. If you find waiting for service of any kind stressful you are coming to the wrong place, I rarely wear a watch in Belgrade, no point ;-)

OK so if you decide to take a chance and go for it you are here in Belgrade and will fly back from Belgrade to wherever, what to do in between and how?

Best option is car , next best option is company like GEA, public bus or slow train, or pay to fly, yes those are the options. No point in being stressed, accept it in laid back manner or the trip is not for you. One consideration, local flights may seem expensive but once in Belgrade and Serbia you wil find cost of living and entertainment low cost so perhaps an offset there ;-)

My personal advice/ comments is first to ask how long have you got and why Zagreb? Nothing to see in Zargeb IME. Sarajevo? Maybe and if so use bus or plane if you don't have a car . However maybe you don't appreciate what is around Belgrade and day trips too, you might be better to stay in Belgrade just take a bus to somewhere like Novi Sad, tourist trips are available to rural Serbia, river trips etc.. Rather than Zagreb, in that direction I'd look at Ljubijana and Slovenia.

Anyway, once here you will probably want more time in this city than you think, moving around the area is not as bad as it seems but it can be laid back and challenging compared to western Europe if relying on public transort and moving stock is very old, you may think that's good reason not to visit, I would argue the relative lack of visitors and relatively unspoilt culture is exactly why I'd want to visit but you must accept economic realities.

So my best advice is leave your watch behind as well as preconceptions and stress, chill out, enjoy the slow train or a late bus with a smile, this is THE city to chill out but it won't suit everyone, much depends on your values and demands. Travelling outside the city is highly rewarding and best done by car , that means it's expensive or again you must take the public transport options with all their frustrations.

Stoofer i wish i can give you a hug. ! Maybe you do have a lot of time in your hand fot this but still you came up with a great reply, well mannered...and interesting.

What you say about Belgrade is exactly what i want to see. No need for fancy cities just show me your culture !

I have 10 nights. I'm trying to split those nights the more profitable i can do. My original thought was 4 nights in Belgrade, 3 Zagreb and the other 3 in Cologne (cheap connection back to Germany from Cologne) Although no hotel has been booked yet, i can still change my mind. I'd rather stay in Belgrade for a whole week and do some day trip in Serbia, like Novi Sad of course. It coult be 7 nights in Belgrade and 3 in Ljubljana too. or else !

I have plenty of time to make up my mind, But if i book 6-7 nights in Belgrade i hope i can find something to do to fill up that week. No too long ago i spend 5 days in Sofia i think i stayed there one or two nights too many.

Again for that amazing reply ,

With 10-days a lot depends on your other interests, Ljubljana would be preferable to Zagreb for most IMO and you could day trip to Lake Bled also the cave systems that are amazing around Postojna.

It's hard for me to advise further except to say that end of October a lot will be down to luck with the weather, it can be really warm and nice and if so you can enjoy much in Belgrade city and Zemun, Ada etc. in that case 7-days will not be too long, but if weather is bad (equally it can be wet and colder) it rules out the river and beach life so 3 days will be sufficient. I usually advise winter visitors have 3-days to see if you like the city, in summer come for a week or more for full vacation.

Whatever and wherever you choose good luck and if Belgrade please let us know how you get on.

P.S. for Pierre

I'm going to try the connexions you mentionned. thanks pal !!

I suggest you start a new thread as your enquiry isn't isolated to GEA tours. A new thread might attract some help.

I agree Stooferuk,Thats why I also started a new thread in the Hungary Forum..

However .difficult to cover all these intended areas with A Single Thread

I would imagine each destination will have it's own recommendations and some may suit, worth posting all forums IMO.

In the end I contacted Terra Travel & managed to make my transfer in the morning.

The staff at GEA tours were friendly and polite but in terms of organisation, they really do need some more work. I can understand it's the winter season and probably such transfers are not in high demand so they are unable to do the morning transfers on some days. Would have appreciated at least a disclaimer/warning before hand that the morning transfer may not happen because they only have one booking so far. Scrambling to find an alternative at 5 pm for a departure the next day is quite unnerving.

Gea Tours

Certainly good to hear of professional and careful driving, several parts of the route are quite dangerous with people driving too fast and overtaking on blind bends. Careful driving without speed is essential IMO

I can't comment on the negatives, most appear to be regarding communication and that's a bit of a local phenomenon in the service industry generally.

Best research all comments and form own opinion.

I do not know what all you people expect!! It is clearly said it is from "door to door".

Pay a taxi, bus or train, but you are cheap. Eh...

' class=

I feel a citizen’s needs to chime in with a positive experience, since these often get forgotten on the Internet.

Longer assessment:

In addition to baseline expectations (which this forum sets at floor level), your experience seems to be based on three things: the driver, the pickup/dropoff route, and the traffic/road conditions along the way, ranked in descending order of Gea’s control over them.

Driver: mine was great. Apologized for being late, smiled a ton, spoke passable English, went door to door as promised, drove swiftly but safely (although this is not Germany; not every theoretical traffic rule holds, and the seatbelts are fully optional, if existent at all). Seemed to have whatever paperwork was needed to cross the border, and/or was best buds with the officials. Solid music taste. A+ here.

Route: decent. I was quoted ‘11am’, the van showed up at 11:45 with two already in it; a fourth was picked up shortly after, and that was it. I was last dropped off in Belgrade but it seemed to be as efficient as possible. No 40km-out-of-the-way nightmares. No crammed van. Border crossing was comically fast and easy on both sides (did we just get really lucky?) A solid B+, considering what others have said.

Conditions: meh. It took us an hour alone to get out of Timişoara city limits, and about the same getting into Belgrade. Such is life - not much anyone can do about that (and to the driver’s credit, he was opportunistic in weaving through where he could). Longest hangup seemed due to random road repaving in Romania. Whatever. It was a Saturday, so maybe things would be a lot worse during a weekday? I’d give the state of the world a B today. 4.5 hours door to door does not seem too bad.

My only real complaint was the booking process. Since my most significant concern was just getting picked up at all (again, what would the alternative be??) I wish things had been a little clearer.

I used Viber (number on their website) to call and book from the US; the guy spoke English and said they’d call the day before. I tried to explain that I don’t have reception abroad and ask for a WhatsApp / SMS instead, but that didn’t seem to make it through. The day before I called from my hostel owner’s phone and asked for the estimated pickup time. It wasn’t clear whether or not they knew I already had a booking or were marking me down again - whatever. He said, and I quote, ‘10:30. 11. Yes, 11.’ Sidenote: you really don’t have control over the time (I’d originally asked for 8ish and got laughed at). He said the driver would call when 10 minutes away. Once more I tried to say I don’t have phone access, and once more I don’t think that clicked. So, I went to bed unsure if I really had a seat, if they’d be able to get in touch at all, and if I was doomed to hours sitting on my bag in a sweltering parking lot.

I trekked (jk walked around the plaza corner) to my parking lot at 11 the next day, and then impatiently found internet and called via Viber at 11:15. The guy immediately said the driver was on his way and would reach me in 20 minutes. Romanian time, that meant 30, and all was well. Later my hostel owner said they’d called her but she obviously couldn’t teleport the message to the aforementioned parking lot-cum-waiting room. Glad I gave another ring for peace of mind (I’m an anxious logistics manager) but seems they would have gotten there regardless. Still, an online booking option or something with a clear confirmation would have been comforting and welcoming.

With the Timişoara-Belgrade train option gone and buses nonexistent, this really is your only (affordable) option. Seems like the variables are, well, variable. I probably wouldn’t expect this service to guaranteed get me to a flight on time. Maybe fortune was on my side, or maybe other people are benchmarking against like Uber, but I was happy enough with the outcome. I hope this review helps balance out the narrative so readers aren’t as fear-crippled as I was when booking.

Thanks for taking the time to write so thorough report, @Wallahi. Much appreciated.

UNACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE

This is just the latest incident with GEA. The others include: lack of seatbelts, smoking drivers, driving way above speed limit, 9h to Sarajevo (instead of 5), and number of others. While until now, I used to still travel through them finding excuses and justifying it by it being faster than a bus, from now on I will never use their services again. They keep the monopol over the transport, and by paying them we contribute to that system (or lack of such).

Pick-up in Belgrade was a bit unusual, as I and a few others were taken in one van from Vračar to a sort of transfer point by a restaurant in Novi Beograd, where passengers were sorted into various other vans going to Sarajevo, Zagreb and wherever else. This never happened with Taxi Travel, by comparison. Taxi Travel was easier to book by phone or Facebook than GEA, and I often relied on my friends in Belgrade to call to confirm my return legs, which generally worked without too much an issue. The only time I was unable to secure a seat back was on Orthodox Christmas, but that didn't really bother me at all.

Fortunately, I've never had any of the major issues that seem to still persist about GEA's quasi-(il)legal operations, and I would still rely on shuttle services at least between Belgrade and Sarajevo over the public buses, as they either take 8+ hours from Sarajevo or are run on slow, dilapidated buses to Istočno Sarajevo, which, if you're visiting the city centre, can be a pain to reach. If going to Zagreb, I can recommend normal bus routes run by Čazmatrans or Lasta, which, barring any major delays on the border, take about 5-6 hours and are usually punctual, and Flixbus does run some services to Budapest now, but rail is unfortunately not much of an option while the route is rebuilt through 2021.

tl;dr be patient, talk to others you meet on your travels to get a feel for their experiences, and always compare train/bus/ flight /shuttles. Busticket4.me is a great resource for bus schedules - local and international - in Serbia and Montenegro.

Sve najgore o ovoj agenciji. Bezobrazni, netacni...sve najgore.

Putovao sam jednom, i nikad vise necu. Iskustva i drugih putnika su katastrofalni.

Izbegnite ih po svaku cenu.

NEVER AGAIN

Very negative experience with GEA tours. First they drivers are very rude. second they said they were coming to pick as in 5pm and they came in at half past eight without any apology. the worst company ever!!!

gea tours serbia

Postoje dve agencije i mnogi ih mesaju Gea tours i Gea travel. Sa Gea travel sam putovala i vise nikad. Prebrza voznja uz konstantno telefoniranje vozaca, citanje poruka, novosti na mobilnom. Losa organizacija i dogovor mesta i vremena nalazenja. Naravno da im nije palo na pamet da izdaju racun, vozaci su nekulturni sve u svemu katastrofa, uspeli su da mi upropaste odmor. Na nas prigovor vozac je reagovao vikom. Totalni kretenizam i amaterizam!
