How can using, animal assisted therapy help.
AAT offers numerous benefits beyond those available through traditional therapies. In this era of managed care and cost reduction, AAT allows therapists to use one treatment tool, an animal, to target a variety of goals. In a hospital setting these goals include, but are not limited to, improving patients’ range of motion, strength and endurance, balance and mobility, and sensation. During the same session, using the animal, cognitive and perceptual deficits can be addressed. The patient also receives psychosocial benefits such as building rapport, increasing self-esteem and motivation, and stress reduction. What other modality offers such a variety of benefits in such a delightful package?

Animal-Assisted Therapy
Helping patients relax & recover.
Animals make you smile — whether you are watching a funny video or see them in person. In Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT), a Pet Partners registered handler and animal team visit you to help you relax and recover. Visits from animal friends has proven to be a great morale boost and can improve your mental and emotional well being. All of the AAT animals are trained therapy pets.
AAT can help you:
- Reduce anxiety
- Lower blood pressure
- Improve deep breathing
- Strengthen fine motor skills
- Manage pain
- Improve emotional and mental well-being
- Boost your immune system
- Succeed in physical therapy
Talk to one of our nurses to request AAT. For safety reasons, the AAT is restricted from visiting patients who are in insolation precautions, infectious disease precautions, have open wounds or if visits are not recommended by the health care team.
How to Volunteer
AAT services are provided by volunteers who have been registered through Pet Partners. We appreciate your desire to support our patients and request that all volunteers commit to a regular weekly schedule.

- Have a dog that is at least one year old. The dog must have a calm temperament and be obedient
- Have your dog up to date on all mandatory vaccinations
- Complete the CentraCare Volunteer Services onboarding process
Previous experience in a health care setting is preferred but not required. If you have questions, please call Volunteer Services at 320-255-5638.

Donate to the Daisy Society
A book for kids and adults about animal rights and how you can help!
On this one-year anniversary of Daisy and Herb’s dramatic rescue, we want to launch a very special project! I have been working on an animal rights children’s book to promote kindness towards animals in all situations and ways for children to make a difference. Help us launch this book across Amazon, Barnes & Noble and many brick-and-mortar bookstores. All proceeds from book sales will benefit the Sanctuary! My personal hope for this fundraiser is that more children grow up with the resources to make kind choices towards animals.
Pleas fill out the form below when you donate so once the book is published we can do a special thank you for all those who made it happen!

Studies have shown that interacting with dogs can help lower blood pressure, heart rate, and overall stress levels. Visits with a therapy dog can provide motivation, education, and therapeutic benefits to enhance a patient’s quality of life. Focusing on the dog provides mental and physical stimulation for patients that can help them become less aware of their own pain and stress. Visits can even help to improve the relationship between a patient and caregiver because the dog helps to create an emotionally non-threatening space for communication, thus lowering resistance to intervention.
Paws to Heal at Ascension St. Vincent is a proud partner of the St. Vincent’s Healing Arts Department and is generously funded through the Ascension St. Vincent Foundation.

Paws & Think is a partner of Dementia Friends Indiana , administered through CICOA Aging & In-Home Solutions. Dementia Friends is a global movement that is changing the way people think, act, and talk about dementia. Developed by the Alzheimer’s Society in the United Kingdom, the Dementia Friends initiative is underway in Indiana and across the United States. The goal of this collaboration is to provide Paws & Think volunteers an opportunity learn more about how to support those living with dementia, how it affects the families and how to enhance our therapy dog visits for this population and their caregivers.
“Paws to Heal has brought another whole dimension to the Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital School program. The dogs, handlers, and escorts are becoming familiar faces and visitors the students look forward to each week. Many of the students are recurring and see the same dogs over several hospital stays and extended stays. The scope of lives touched by the program extends significantly past the 15-20 minute window spent with the dog. We look forward to seeing how this program continues to grow and evolve as it already has so much in the months since being established.” Heather Wiselogle, M. Ed., Hospital Based Teacher/Liaison at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at Ascension St. Vincent
