Frequently asked questions

What do i need to know before booking a flight.

There are various factors to consider when booking a flight including cost, fare classes, baggage policies, the complications of flying long haul, and complying with airport regulations. To make your booking journey smoother KAYAK has developed a comprehensive flight guide including insights on finding affordable flights, packing efficiently, and utilizing the best travel tools.

What is the cheapest day of the week to book a flight?

The best day to book your flight depends on a number of factors, but there are general trends that you can follow to increase your chances of cheaper plane tickets. Based on an analysis of KAYAK data for all flights departing from inside United States over the last 12 months, the cheapest day to fly for domestic flights is Wednesday. For international flights, Tuesday had the cheapest tickets on average.

Which month of the year are flight prices lowest?

It’s well established that flights in the low season are generally cheaper than ticket prices during the high season. That means that knowing which month to find the lowest priced plane tickets will depend heavily on seasonality and your destination. While avoiding peak travel times can help you keep costs down, our data shows that the month with the lowest priced plane tickets for domestic flights based on all searches made on KAYAK in the last 12 months was January, while the most expensive was June. If you’re booking an international flight, then January is the cheapest month to fly and June the most expensive.

When is the best time to buy plane tickets - Last minute or in advance?

Last minute flight deals are definitely up for grabs but when exactly to purchase your plane tickets will depend on where you’re traveling to and from. Based on all data for flight searches made on KAYAK over the last 12 months, prices for domestic flights remained below the average price up to 1 weeks before departure. For international flights, deals could still be had up to 1 weeks prior to the departure date, with prices remaining below average. If you’re flexible, KAYAK brings you both advance and last minute one-way and round-trip flight deals.

Can flying international flights with a layover save money on airfare?

For many long-haul international flights, flying non-stop is not possible and you will have to fly with a layover. Some routes will offer both and you could consider flying with a layover for a number of reasons. Firstly, breaking up what would otherwise be a long-haul flight, taking a rest and then completing the journey might make the flight more manageable. Secondly, prices can also be lower than non-stop flights, so while it might take longer for you to reach your destination, you could save money. We’ve looked at prices over the last 12 months for the 100 most popular international destinations for KAYAK users and on average, prices for non-stop flights were cheaper than flights with a layover.

How does KAYAK find such low flight prices?

KAYAK processes over 2 billion flight queries annually and displays results from hundreds of airlines and third party sites, allowing it to find a variety of flight prices and options. It also displays results from 2M+ properties along with rental cars, vacation packages, activities and millions of verified reviews so users can see as many available travel options as possible.

How to find cheap flights, what is the best day to buy a plane ticket.

This just in! Airfares offered on Thursdays tend to be the cheapest, according to flight demand on Travelocity in 2021. Tuesday and Wednesday prices are also good, but you may want to prepare your budget if booking during the weekend, as data shows that is when prices are generally at their highest.

What are the cheapest days to fly?

Frequent travelers may already know this, but earlier in the week can be the cheapest time to fly. In 2021, flights departing on a Monday were generally the cheapest of the week, whereas you may pay a premium for weekend flights when demand is usually high. On average, tickets were most expensive for Saturday departures, so if you need to fly out on a weekend, you might look for deals ahead of time.

How far in advance can you book a flight?

Trying to figure out how early you should book your flight? It’s possible to start comparing international airfares on Travelocity up to 12 months in advance. However, it does depend on the carrier as not all airlines release their prices that far out. According to our 2021 flight demand trends, last minute planners can still bag a bargain with some of the cheapest fares appearing 0-2 weeks prior to their travel dates.

*According to flight demand on Travelocity.com from January to December 2021. Savings are subject to change based on departure location, date and destination.

In this post, we will explain everything there is to know about 1-Day Disney World theme park tickets including prices and how you can even get a discount on them in some situations.

We’ll cover all the various 1-Day ticket options (Base ticket, Park Hopper, Park Hopper Plus, and the Water Parks & Sports option, and what is included in each of them. This will help you make an informed decision for your family as to which ticket is best for you.

1-Day tickets to Walt Disney World are actually one of the most popular ticket types, with many people visiting for a convention, or they just don’t have the time or money to go for multiple days. Even though Walt Disney World is huge and deserves at least 2-3 days to visit, we’ll help you make the best use of the one day you do have.

1-Day Disney World Tickets in 202 4 and 2025

Old Magic Kingdom ticket Disney World Tickets

For a long time, it was an impossibility to receive any kind of discount on 1-Day Park Tickets. However, since the COVID-19 pandemic, things have changed for the positive and now you can get 1-Day Tickets at a discount when purchased outside of Disney.

Not only CAN you receive a discount in some cases, but you also have additional options when it comes to purchasing your 1-Day tickets.

Despite being one of the most popular tickets, especially for visitors passing through or convention guests, 1-Day Tickets were almost always just ‘buy at the gate’ type of tickets. Opportunities for saving money at Disney World were nonexistent and a waste of time, but not anymore.

Even though we recommend visiting for multiple dates, it’s actually possible to save some money if you go the 1-Day route. Now, let’s look at each 1-Day ticket type and see the differences between each of them.

1-Day Base Tickets

1-Day Disney World Base Tickets

The 1-Day Base Ticket is the most affordable and simplest way to visit one of the (4) major Disney World Theme Parks. Simply put, a base ticket allows you to visit one park per day. ( Animal Kingdom , Hollywood Studios , Magic Kingdom , or EPCOT )

The biggest change they made recently for 1-Day Base tickets is the new park-specific pricing structure . Now, the park you choose to visit changes the price of the ticket, and the 4 parks are no longer the same cost.

1-Day Disney World Tickets prices

Here are the 2024 1-Day Disney World park ticket prices:

  • Magic Kingdom: $124-$189 (plus tax)
  • EPCOT: $114-$179 (plus tax)
  • Hollywood Studios: $124-$184 (plus tax)
  • Animal Kingdom: $109-$164 (plus tax)

In February 2024, Disney released the pricing structure for 2025 tickets. They did raise the prices on 1-Day tickets on the low-end of the spectrum. While the peak dates did NOT increase, the low-end prices raised.

Here are the 2025 1-Day Disney World park ticket prices:

  • Magic Kingdom: $139-$189 (plus tax)
  • EPCOT: $129-$179 (plus tax)
  • Hollywood Studios: $139-$184 (plus tax)
  • Animal Kingdom: $119-$164 (plus tax)

As you can see, the Animal Kingdom is the cheapest park for 1-Day tickets and the Magic Kingdom is the most expensive.

ticket travel one day

Remember though, this new pricing structure is only applicable to 1-Day, 1-Park tickets. For all the other 1-Day tickets or Multi-Day tickets, each of the 4 WDW theme parks cost the same.

1-Day tickets also give you the option to leave and come back into the park as much as you’d like that day. However, once you use your ticket as admission to a park, you cannot visit a DIFFERENT park on that same day, you can only visit the original park.

Should You Buy It?

droid inside Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance

These are ideal tickets if you’d like to just focus on doing as much as possible in one park. They allow you to fully maximize your ticket without worrying about spending your time ‘park hopping’ to other parks.

Even if you’d like to take a midday break (like our family often chooses to do), you’ll still be able to re-enter the same park and spend later afternoons and evenings in that same park.

Often, families that are spending a week or more on their Disney World vacation don’t feel the need to ‘park hop’ as they can already visit each of the main parks at least once on their visit.

1-Day Disney World tickets can also benefit families that only want to spend a half day or so in the park, and choose to spend the rest of their days by the pool or relaxing back at their hotel resort. That said, the best way to maximize your cost with this ticket is to do a full day at the park you are visiting which means arriving and staying as late as possible.

archway in Magic Kingdom Fantasyland

If you are visiting Disney World for just one day and only want to visit one park during that day, the 1-Day Base ticket is a good choice.

If you are the type of person that wants to maximize every opportunity or is strapped for time and wants to see as much as possible, including multiple parks, and doesn’t mind spending the extra money for a ‘park hopper,’ then this ticket is likely NOT the ticket for you.

1-Day Park Hopper Tickets

Disney World Tickets Park Hopper

For an added cost, a 1-Day Park Hopper allows you to visit multiple parks on the same day. At this moment in time, that means after 2:00 pm each afternoon, you can leave one park and enter another one of the four main parks.

There is one caveat: the park must still have availability, which in our experience is usually not a problem. To check availability, you can check the My Disney Experience app or you can call 407-560-5000.

  • In 2024, the 1-Day Park Hopper ticket ranges from $200.22 to $270.51 for Adults.
  • In 2025, the 1-Day Park Hopper ticket ranges from $210.87 – $273.71 for Adults.

With a park hopper, you can visit as many parks as you’d like and if timed correctly, you can maximize and fully utilize all your time in a given day.

interior of Cinderella's Royal Table entrance

The only way we’d recommend getting a 1-Day Park Hopper is IF you plan your day smartly. This can be very advantageous if done properly and, for the additional cost, you’ll have the option to see more with a park hopper.

For instance, if the park you are entering in the morning opens at 8:00 am but closes earlier in the evening, you can visit another one of the parks later in the day to give you additional total time in the parks.

Or maybe there’s a particular park where you REALLY want to see the nighttime entertainment. Maybe it’s a fireworks show, and having the option to enter that park in the evening is certainly a perfect way to end a nice long day in the parks.

ticket travel one day

We also recommend a 1-Day Park Hopper ticket to people that want to see as much as possible in the parks in a day. If you want to see some of the highlights of multiple parks, as opposed to just one park, then you’ll need a 1-Day Park Hopper.

  • Just remember: IF you get the park hopper, plan it out smartly. Review park schedules to fully maximize your day to make the added cost worth it. If you don’t use it correctly or you waste unnecessary time, it could be a waste of additional money when you could have had a perfectly enjoyable day at one park.

Our Guide to Park Hopping at Disney World can help you plan out your day and give you the info you need.

1-Day Water Parks & Sports Ticke ts (Not Available for 1-Day)

Disney World Tickets Water Park and Sports Option

Unfortunately, there is NO ability to get a 1-Day Water Parks & Sports ticket for only 1-day tickets. For you to purchase this add-on you will need at least a 2-Day ticket.

If you purchase a 2-Day option for the ‘Water Parks and Sports’ Option you will be able to enjoy two additional experiences on TOP of the park days.

These additional experiences include admission to:

  • Blizzard Beach or Typhoon Lagoon water park
  • Admission to ESPN Wide World of Sports (non-event ticket)
  • (1) Round of Miniature Golf at Fantasia Gardens or Winter Summerland before 4:00 pm
  • Round of golf at Oak Trail Golf Course (9-Holes Club and Pull Cart NOT included)
  • In 2024: a 2-Day Water Parks & Sports ticket ranges between $319.01 – $437.14 for Adults .
  • In 2025: a 2-Day Water Parks & Sports ticket ranges between $338.93 – $441.70 for Adults .

This ticket does NOT include park hopping. That means you must still choose just one park to enter on the day of your choosing.

The good news however is that your additional experience does NOT need to be used on the same day. For example, you can go to the Magic Kingdom one day, and then visit a water park on a completely different day!

So in reality a 2-Day Water Parks and Sports Ticket can actually be used for 4 full days of experiences. Two days in the parks and another two days at your choice of additional experiences.

Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse Partners Statue

The best value for these tickets is using them at the water parks , as they are the most expensive of the available options. It’s not a bad idea to get a 2-Day Water Parks & Sports Ticket if you REALLY want to visit one or both of the Disney Water Parks: Typhoon Lagoon or Blizzard Beach.

Using one of the add-on experiences for 9 holes of golf at Oak Trail can be a nice few hours spent for a family member that loves playing golf as well. It’s a nice change of pace and it’s a beautiful walking 9-hole course that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed playing on!

Our advice on debating whether to get a 2-Day Water Parks & Sports ticket is: only buy it IF you plan in advance exactly how you are going to use it. And fully maximize your add-on experience to get the most out of your time and your value. This isn’t a great option for a 1-Day ticket since technically there isn’t a 1-day ticket for it.

1-Day Park Hopper Plus Tickets

Disney World Tickets Park Hopper Plus

A 1-Day Park Hopper Plus ticket enables you to get everything in one! You get the park hopping privileges AND you get the water parks & sports option.

While this is the most expensive ticketing option, if planned correctly, it could present your family and you with multiple days of fun.

  • The cost of 2024 1-Day Park Hopper Plus tickets, ranges between $221.52 – $291.81 for Adults.
  • The cost of 2025 1-Day Park Hopper Plus tickets, ranges between $231.11 – $295.01 for Adults.

While it may seem on the surface to be quite a lot, it’s perfectly doable to maximize this ticketing add-on if planned out properly. When deciding when and ‘IF’ to purchase this, decide these two things:

  • Do I want to park hop (visit multiple parks in one day) on my day in the park?
  • Do I want to either play golf at Oak Trail Golf Course or visit one of the water parks?

If the answer to either of these questions is ‘NO’ then don’t buy this ticketing option. You don’t need it and you won’t get the best value when it comes to this ticketing add-on.

Buying 1-Day Disney World Tickets

Disney World 1-Day Ticket Prices

Buying 1-Day Disney World Tickets was something that you exclusively would have to do directly through Disney, until recently. Now at least there are some options, some of which actually save you money.

But remember: 1-Day tickets will ALWAYS be the most expensive form of Disney tickets per day no matter where you buy them from and it may be worth getting additional days depending on your schedule.

Each subsequent day in the parks will drop in price and be more feasible per day for a family. The price difference per day is substantial when you go from one day to ten days (the most you can buy) in the parks.

If at all possible, we always recommend families and individuals to try and spend more than one day in the parks as it’ll save you in the long run and likely make your trip more enjoyable. However, we understand this is not always possible and one day is always better than zero days in the parks.

In the last few years, Disney introduced something called date-based tickets, which basically means that the dates you choose to visit the parks will determine the cost of the tickets.

Do All 4 Walt Disney World Theme Parks Cost the Same for 1 Day?

Yes and no, it depends on what type of 1-Day ticket you buy. 1-Day, 1-Park Tickets have park-specific pricing and each park has a different price range. Animal Kingdom is the least expensive and Magic Kingdom is the most expensive. However, this is ONLY for 1-Day Base tickets.

This is a new change and applies only to 1-Park Base tickets.

When buying any other 1-Day tickets including the Park Hopper, Water Parks & Sports, and Park Hopper Plus options, all the 4 Walt Disney World theme parks cost the exact same amount ( Magic Kingdom , EPCOT , Hollywood Studios , Animal Kingdom ). In these cases ‘what park’ you choose doesn’t matter as far as price.

No matter which 1-Day ticket you choose, the price will depend on the date you choose, and that adjusts for all 4 parks.

How to Get Discounted 1-Day Tickets

Discount Disney World Tickets from Orlando Vacation

The days of significant savings on 1-Day Disney tickets, or better yet, half-off tickets is certainly over! However, at times, discounted 1-Day Tickets are possible through select authorized Disney ticketing outlets (most of them only give discounts on multiple-day tickets).

One of our favorites is Orlando Vacation . They offer comparable prices to Disney but at times you can get even more savings.

Another of our favorites is Undercover Tourist . They sometimes offer a slight discount on 1-Day tickets (think just a few dollars) but a 365-Day refund policy in case you change your mind about the purchase.

Make sure to read our Discount Disney World Tickets Guide for more info on how to get the lowest prices on your tickets.

Buy from the Right Seller

Undercover Tourist Disney World Tickets

As is ALWAYS the case, make sure you buy your park tickets through Disney or through authorized ticket sellers. There are far too many scams out that can lead you to be easily duped if you don’t know what you’re looking for.

And Disney World tickets are anything but cheap, so we certainly don’t want to see you wasting your valuable vacation money on fake or unusable tickets.

Here are some things to look for if buying from someone other than direct from Disney:

  • Make sure they are authorized Disney sellers.
  • Make sure they aren’t partially used tickets or transferred tickets.
  • Sellers will never use the name Disney or any form of it in their business name.
  • If the savings seem too good to be true, they are!
  • Avoid buying tickets from reselling sites like eBay and Craigslist.

If all these things check out, then you likely have a good ticket seller. Always of course compare prices from different companies and compare them to buying directly through Disney. If there are any savings at all, it should be very minimal with 1-Day tickets.

And if you have any doubts, we recommend using one of our two favorite authorized Disney ticket sellers, Orlando Vacation and Undercover Tourist . Either one will save you a decent amount on your park tickets, so why not get the extra savings if you can?

Is It Cheaper to Buy Disney World Tickets at the Gate or Online?

ticket window at Animal Kingdom entrance

For multi-day tickets, it’s cheaper to buy them online, but with 1-day tickets, the price difference is negligible whether to buy in person at the gate or online.

However, even though there isn’t a big savings, we always recommend buying online , even on 1-Day tickets, because of a few primary reasons:

  • First – You will still save a few dollars, and every little bit matters for most families.
  • Second – It is very nice to be able to arrive at the parks and not have to deal with going to a ticket counter while just focusing on going directly into the park. And every minute of time saved is another minute you can enjoy in the parks, especially if you are rope dropping the park.
  • Third – You need to make your Park Pass Reservations ahead of time, and most of the time that’s not really possible if you buy your tickets that morning.

How Much Does it Cost to Add an Extra Day?

Disney World Height Requirements

Even though a 1-Day ticket may be good for some people, it is quite often that families want to add an additional day to their trip after they realize that one day simply was just not enough time.

Adding just one extra day to a 1-day base park ticket is still very costly. While the cost goes down each day, the first three days of a park ticket will still be in excess of $100 per day.

Once you get to four-day or five-day tickets, you’re looking at only around $30-50 for every additional day.

And once you get down to adding six through day nine-day tickets, you’ll only spend between $10 and $30 per day.

How Much Does it Cost to Go to Disney World for One Day?

theme park entrance ticket tap point MagicBand reader

Now that you know how much tickets cost, how much does it cost to go to Disney World for one day when taking into consideration tickets, food, parking, etc?

According to our research and estimation, here are the current prices you can expect to pay to go to Disney World for just one day in 2024 and 2025.

Park Tickets ($134 per person) – Depending on the date on which you choose and the park ticket you purchase, the price can fluctuate from anywhere between about $109 for adults to up to $274 plus tax. It’s just a few dollars less for children between the ages of 3 and 9.

That means for a family of four, this can be anywhere from $500 to over $1000 just on park tickets! That of course doesn’t include food, drinks, shopping, or any other additional experiences.

For the cheapest option, 1-Day Base tickets cost between $109 – $189 per person, depending on which park you go to.

Olivia's restaurant interior Old Key West

Food ($50 per person) – This is a low estimate and requires eating at quick service restaurants ($15-$20 per meal) and snacks ($4 – $10 each to save money). If you eat at a table service restaurant, the cost goes up at least $20 or more depending on how fancy you want to get.

Parking ($30 per vehicle) – If you are only going to Walt Disney World for one day, you likely are taking a car to get there. In that case, you need to account for the parking fees at the theme parks.

With all these costs added up, going to Walt Disney World for one day in 2024 will likely cost you between $180 – $250 per person.  That price increases even more if you want to buy merchandise or gifts to bring home.

Depending on when you go and what type of vacationer you are, a reasonable estimate for a family of 4 to Visit Walt Disney World for one day is between $800 – $1000.

For a more detailed breakdown, read our post on “ How Much Does It Cost to Go to Disney World? ”

How Long are 1-Day Disney World Tickets Valid For?

Magic Kingdom Ticket Prices

1-Day Disney World Tickets are ONLY valid on the selected start date. They cannot be used on any other days and are only valid for that one day.

So if you use your ticket to go to the Magic Kingdom on September 1, your ticket is no longer valid on September 2.

If you have any questions on the subject, read our article on Disney World Ticket Expirations .

Making Park Pass Reservations

Disney park reservations calendar 2025

Implemented once the parks reopened during the pandemic in 2020, the Park Pass Reservation system requires that all Disney Park attendees make a park reservation. Disney will not allow anyone to enter the parks without having a park pass reservation.

(UPDATE): Theme park reservations are no longer required for date-based tickets. Only those with older tickets or annual passes will likely need to make Park Reservations.

This only applies to the four main theme parks (Animal Kingdom, Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and Epcot) and not the water parks.

The Park Pass system is very easy to use and simply requires that you go on My Disney Experience and make a park pass reservation for all guests in your party for the first theme park you plan on entering on that day. If you are park hopping and visiting multiple parks in the course of the day, you only need a reservation for the first.

Just make sure you have a valid park pass first and that the pass is synced up with your My Disney Experience account before making a park pass reservation.

  • Remember that you MUST use your 1-Day ticket at the park you make a reservation at and on the day you select.

If you need to change your date, contact Disney Ticketing and they typically will have no issue altering your reservation date. If there’s a price difference for the ‘new date’ you will simply have to pay the price difference.

We go into more detail on this in our Disney World Ticket Refund Guide .

Best Plan for 1 Day at Walt Disney World

City Scene Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway

When planning out a 1-Day itinerary, the first thing you need to do is decide which park you most desire. It’s at that park you should make your park reservation and spend the majority of your day. Let’s say for the sake of it, it’s Hollywood Studios. I’m a big Star Wars fan and that’s what I would most want to do and see.

My Ideal Day (Hollywood Studios) – I’d purchase a 1-Day Park Hopper, and I’d make my park reservation at Hollywood Studios. I’d review the schedule for the day and see that they open at 8:00 am. After reviewing the schedule, I’d make a plan of attack for my day.

Write down my ‘MUST DOS’ and for me, that would be Rise of the Resistance , Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway , Toy Story Midway Mania , Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run , Tower of Terror , Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster , etc.

EPCOT Snacks

After I feel content with what I had seen and done, I’d head to my 2nd park for the day and that would be EPCOT.

When getting to EPCOT, I’d snack my way around the World Showcase while stopping at different rides along the way. I would end my night with the fireworks show at EPCOT at the end of the night.

If this plan seems to be TOO much for you or if you have small children, my Plan B would be something like this:

Pirates of the Caribbean Jail Scene Magic Kingdom

My Ideal Day Plan B (Magic Kingdom) – I’d purchase a 1-Day Base ticket for Magic Kingdom. I’d have more than enough to do and see at Magic Kingdom to spend my entire day there. From rides to snacks to fireworks, I still wouldn’t have time to do everything.

What better way to spend my entire day at the classic Disney Castle Park, the Magic Kingdom? Plus they have the highest number of rides for small kids at Disney World , perfect for families!

Ziggy Knows Disney close

My name is Ziggy and I love Disney, everything Disney! I grew up on Disney and it has and continues to be a huge part of my life. I started young when my parents took me to Disney World when I was 18 months old. Little did they know that would be the first of an uncountable number of trips we would take. I have so many amazing memories going to Disney with my family and friends and it has been interwoven into my DNA.

Quick Guide to Tokyo One-Day Passes

There are a range of Tokyo one-day passes for train, subway and bus, available to travelers and residents alike. In this guide, we share which of them will cheapen your travels around the city — some won’t!

The first thing to know is that unless you’re going to be zipping all over the city, one-day Tokyo passes might not save you much money. It’s sometimes better to just get a Suica or Pasmo IC card for travel around Tokyo (and the rest of Japan). Before dashing out and buying anything, work out your travel routes and check the ticket prices . When you compare them to the passes below, you might find that single tickets are a better bet.

Overview of Tokyo transport passes

The tokyo metro 24-hour ticket.

A 24 hour Tokyo Metro ticket held up inside a Tokyo Metro Station

We’ve found the Tokyo Metro 24-hour Ticket to be the most useful discount Tokyo travel pass. It costs just ¥ 600 and gives you unlimited rides on all Tokyo Metro lines (Ginza, Marunouchi, Hibiya, Tozai, Chiyoda, Yurakuchō, Hanzōmon, Namboku, and Fukutoshin). There are other lines run by Toei, which you can’t ride for free using this pass, but it’s usually easy enough to work out a journey that only uses Tokyo Metro lines.

A word of caution: Some Tokyo Metro lines continue on private commuter line tracks after a certain point, and you’ll have to pay extra to use them. It’s also worth noting that you can hold advance tickets for up to six months before activating them, but you must activate same-day tickets on the day of purchase.

What to do with it

The Tokyo Metro 24-hour pass covers most of the major bases in Tokyo central. A sample day out on it might look something like this:

  • Start out in Shinjuku — say hi to Godzilla and do a spot of shopping.
  • Then hop onto the Fukutoshin Line from Shinjuku-sanchome Station and head over to Meiji-jingumae to have a mosey around Meiji Jingu Shrine , Yoyogi Park and Harajuku.
  • Wander down to Omotesando for lunch, then board the Ginza Line to experience the glitz and glamour of the  Ginza  neighborhood.
  • After a bit of  ginbura (windowshopping in Ginza), you could get on the train again to see the sights of Asakusa (near Skytree).
  • Ikebukuro , Roppongi (of Tokyo Tower fame), Shibuya and Tokyo Station (near the Imperial Palace) are all also accessible using the pass.

Where to get it

You can grab one from just about any Tokyo Metro ticket machine.

Toei and Tokyo Metro 24-hour Ticket

An array of ticket machines below a network map at Tokyo Metro Akasaka Station

Called different variations of the above in English, but the ichinichi josha ken in Japanese, The Toei and Tokyo Metro 24-hour Ticket allows unlimited rides on all Tokyo Metro and Toei subway lines. It costs ¥ 800 and you can get it online, or at a ticket machine or station office. There are also versions of the pass available for two or three days costing ¥ 1,200 and ¥ 1,500 respectively.

The Toei and Tokyo Metro 24-hour Ticket opens up all of the places that the Tokyo Metro 24-hour Pass does, with the added benefit of access to the Toei Line, which is useful if you plan to visit Oshiage (think Tokyo Skytree), Mita , the booksville that is Jimbocho , Suidobashi or Nerima  (among other areas).

You can also ride on the only streetcar left in Tokyo, the Toden Arakawa Line , which can take you from East Ikebukuro to Zoshigaya (home to Kishimojindo Temple ), Waseda and a few other random destinations. Unless your accommodation is on a Toei Line though, you’ll likely get better value out of a pure Metro pass.

If you’re not going to be using the metro, it’s better to go for the ¥ 700 Toei One-Day Economy Pass ( toei marugoto  kip pu ), which gives you full use of Toei subways, Toei buses, the Toei Streetcar (Toden) Arakawa Line, and the Nippori-Toneri Liner.

The advance ones are sold on Headout and Klook , as well as at Tokyo Metro Commuter Pass Offices, and on-the-day passes can be bought at ticket machines in Metro or Toei Line stations.

Tokunai Pass: 24 hours of JR trains

Commuters at Shinjuku Station

One of the better-value day passes, the Tokunai Pass costs ¥ 760 and gives you unlimited access to local and rapid JR trains within the 23 wards of Tokyo. This cover five lines: The Yamanote, the JR Yokohama Line, the Keihin-Tohoku Line, Chuo-Sobu Lines and the Rapid Chuo (up to a certain point).

While some lines extend to exciting destinations like Yokohama , you have to remain within the 23 wards, but that’s not exactly limiting. To make the most of the Yamanote, you can practically use the trainline as a sightseeing schedule, visiting spots like Shibuya , Shinjuku , Harajuku , Ueno , Akihabara , Ikebukuro , Shinagawa and Tokyo Station .

The other four lines offer spots like Ryogoku (home of sumo ) and Koenji (home of hipsters ), along with plenty of smaller local-feeling stations.

Pick one up at the reserved-seat ticket machines at stations, JR ticket offices ( midori-no-madoguchi in Japanese) or JR’s travel service centers.

Tokyo Free Kippu 24-hour Ticket

commuters at Shinjuku train station in Tokyo

Also known as the Tokyo Combination Ticket or Tokyo Tour Ticket, this is almost NEVER the best deal. The one-day pass costs ¥ 1,600 and gives you access to the Tokyo Metro, Toei Subway, Toei Streetcar (Toden), most Toei buses, the Nippori-Toneri Liner, and all JR lines within the Tokyo metropolitan area. Seems great at first glance, but it’s unlikely that you’ll be doing that much traveling in a single day. Our advice? Opt for one of the other Tokyo travel passes.

With this pass, you can go pretty much anywhere and everywhere in Tokyo, but you’d have to be doing exactly that to get the best deal. Keep it in mind if you have to do multiple transfers between lines and services though — or if the reduced hassle of ticket buying is worth it for you (travel expenses, anyone?)

Buy the pass from machines at almost all Tokyo Metro Stations (except Kita-senju, Naka-meguro, Nakano, Yoyogi-Uehara, Wakoshi, Meguro and Shibuya’s Hanzomon and Fukutoshin Lines).

Toei Bus One-day Pass

A Toei Bus pulls over during the Sanja Matsuri in Asakusa

For ¥ 500 , you can get a Toei Bus One-Day Pass — which is great if you’re planning on taking the bus up and down Tokyo, but not all that useful otherwise. Considering that a single trip on the bus usually costs ¥ 210 , and a return ¥ 420 , you need to be making more than one round-trip for this pass to be worthwhile.

Most tourists tend to rely on trains more than buses, as they’re easier to navigate. That said, Google Maps is getting better for this, so branch out if you fancy seeing some sights on your journey from A to B.

Cool things about the Toei Bus One-day Pass: You can use it for unlimited travel within Tokyo’s 23 wards (you can get off at every stop if you feel like it). And it has a great slogan: “Feel the life of Japanese on the bus!” Who could say no to that?

The Tokyo bus system is extensive, so you can use the pass to go anywhere in Tokyo. It may not be quicker, but it’s a bit better for getting yourself oriented in the city.

The ticket can be purchased on the bus or at Toei bus commuter pass offices (probably easier to stick to the bus though). You can get a paper option or have it added to your Pasmo card. Try to be early for the first bus, so as not to hold up the queue.

Seibu One-day Pass

Kawagoe traditiona buildings

A pass that promises the joy of the four seasons, the Seibu Pass is great if you’re planning on visiting the old-town world of Kawagoe or the day-trip destination of Chichibu. Both are great options for a day outdoors, with Hon-Kawagoe an hour from Seibu-Shinjuku Station and Chichibu an hour from Ikebukuro.

While there are limited-express train options for both these routes, they’re not covered under this pass, which is a little frustrating. You’ll still save on a return ticket though. The Seibu Pass has both one and two-day options: the one-day pass is ¥ 1,000 , while the 2-day pass is (predictably) ¥ 2,000 . The pass includes all lines, except for the Tamagawa Line. There’s also an option for a Nagatoro addition, if you’d like to cavort close to a river at any point.

Head out to Kawagoe for a day filled with temple-hopping and old-school sweets, or go to Chichibu for a temple pilgrimage or the spring shiba-zakura festival . If you’re looking for more Tokyo day trips, check out our top options .

The Seibu One-day Pass can be purchased at Seibu Limited Express ticket offices on the first and basement floors of Ikebukuro Station, the Seibu Tourist Information Center in Ikebukuro or in Seibu-Shinjuku Station. The one-day ticket can also be purchased in advance online through Klook .

Bonus Tokyo travel passes

Gotokuji Lucky Cat

While the discount tickets above are great for days of sightseeing, there are plenty of others for more specific needs, like airport travel or local lines.

Airport combination tickets

  • Haneda Airport: A ¥ 1,400 pass that gets you from Haneda Airport into the city on the Keikyu Line and throws in a Toei and Tokyo Metro One-day Economy Pass too. You can buy it on arrival at Haneda. Read more about the “Hanetoku Pass” .
  • Narita Airport: The Keisei Skyliner and Tokyo Subway 24-hour ticket for those coming in from Narita, for ¥ 2,890 . If you don’t book online, you can also buy it at the airport after arrival.

While you’re at it, you might want to explore other cheap ways to get from Haneda Airport to Tokyo and Narita Airport to Tokyo .

Local line tickets

Local line tickets are great if you’re staying in a particular area or have a few stops to make in a day. Some of the best options include:

  • The Rinkai Line 1-Day Ticket is perfect if you’re using the Seikyu Line to explore Odaiba.
  • The Yurikamome One-Day Pass is great for those skipping between Shimbashi, Toyosu and Odaiba.
  • The Setagaya Line Explorer Ticket gets you to the famed cat temple in Gotokuji on a very cute cat tram.
  • The Tokyu Line Minatomirai Ticket gives you a return ticket from Tokyo and unlimited use on the Minatomirai subway line which is a great deal. Prices differ depending on the starting station.

Look for these and other discount passes when buying tickets at station vending machines.

Extended tickets

There are also longer-use passes, like the three-day Tokyo Wide Pass , the various Japan Rail Passes , and the seasonal Seishun 18 ticket . These are recommended for travel outside of Tokyo.

And if you want to get outside for the day, here’s a map of the Tokyo subway by walking times — no pass required, just a sturdy pair of shoes.

London Underground Tickets & Travelcards

The Travelcard is a transport pass for London that gives you unlimited travel in London within certain zones . The prices vary according to the number of zones you need to travel through. Central London is in zone 1.

Travelcards are valid for 1 day, 7 days, 1 month or 1 year.

The passes are valid for travel on all types of transport in London including:

  • the Underground (the tube)
  • the local suburban trains within London
  • the Elizabeth Line (not west of West Drayton)
  • the Docklands Light Railway (DLR)
  • the London Overground
  • the buses all over London. A Travelcard for any zone allows you to use the buses in all zones (zones 1-6)

The 3 Day Travelcard, weekend Travelcard, Zone 1-2 & 2-6 One Day Travelcards are no longer available.

Visiting London for 1-7 days? See our guide to London’s transport tickets & passes . The Travelcard may not be the best ticket for your stay.

Single Underground Tickets

Single paper tickets on the London underground are expensive if you buy them from a tube station ticket machine:

  • £6.70 for one journey in zone 1 (central London) and between zone 1 and zones 2 to 6
  • See single ticket prices for all zones .

One Day Travelcards: 2024 prices

Using a Pay as you go Oyster card or a contactless card are the cheapest ways to pay for travel if you’re in London for 1-5 days. The daily cap is £8.50 per day for zones 1-2

If you really don’t want to use an Oyster card or don’t have a contactless card, the One Day Travelcard is the next best money-saving pass.

The paper Off peak One Day Travelcard for zone 1-6 is  £15.90. This is expensive, but still cheaper than paying the full cash fare for 3 underground trips in central London (3 x £6.70 = £20.10 ).

One Day Travelcard fares 2024

Peak v anytime travelcards.

One Day Travelcard prices are different if you travel during peak or off-peak times:

Anytime Travelcard Valid for travel at anytime. Off-Peak Travelcard For travel after 9.30am Monday–Friday and all day Saturday, Sunday and public holidays.

Top Tip: An Off-Peak One Day Travelcard for zones 1–6 costs  £10.40 with a Railcard .

Weekly Travelcards: 2024 prices

If you stay in London for 6–7 days and use the underground, trains, and buses every day, the weekly Travelcard is the most cost-effective travel pass.

The one-week pass including central London (zones 1-2) is  £42.70.

  • It can start on any day of the week
  • It’s valid for travel at anytime; there is no peak or off-peak rate.

Most places sell weekly Travelcards loaded onto a plastic Oyster card. There’s a £7 fee for the Oyster card.

Your fare on an Oyster card will automatically cap at the weekly Travelcard fare (this is already available on contactless cards). The cap starts on Monday and ends Sunday, so it mainly benefits Londoners or those working in London.

Weekly Travelcard fares 2024

  • See weekly Travelcards prices for all other zones (2, 3, 4, 5 and 6)

Monthly Travelcards: 2024 prices

For longer stays in London, monthly Travelcards are available. You won’t save much compared to buying 4 x weekly Travelcards – but you’ll save time renewing it. Like the weekly Travelcard, it can start on any day of the week and is valid for travel at any time. See monthly Travelcard prices for all other zones (2, 3, 4, 5 and 6)

Monthly Travelcards 2024

London train stations

One Day Travelcards are available from all London train station ticket offices and ticket macines. Paper weekly and monthly Travelcards are no longer available from train stations . They are available to buy, but they are loaded onto an Oyster card and may only be available from ticket machines, not ticket offices.

London Transport Visitor Centres

TfL Visitor Centres at Victoria train station, Kings Cross/St Pancras International station, Heathrow Terminal 2 & 3 tube staion, Liverpool St station & Piccadilly Circus tube station.

How to use a Travelcard

On the underground.

If you have a paper One Day Travelcard, just show it to the driver when boarding the bus.

See How to use an Oyster card if you have a weekly Travelcard on an Oyster card.

Top Tip: Do you want a cheaper way to travel around central London? If you only travel by bus , it costs £5.25 per day or £24.70 per week.

Key takeaways

  • The price of your flight depends on a variety of factors, not just the day you book it and the day you fly out.
  • However, data from Expedia’s 2024 Air Travel Hacks Report shows that consumers can save money by booking on Sundays and flying out on Thursdays.
  • To help you save even further, consider using co-branded airline credit cards or travel rewards credit cards that earn miles with every trip you take.

When it comes to the cheapest days to book flights, you should know there’s no single rule that applies all the time. In fact, so many factors go into the cost of flights that it’s hard to know what prices will be from one day to the next, let alone over the course of a year or on any given day of a single month.

That said, there are some recognizable patterns when you look at the costs for airfare over a long enough timeline, and some organizations have done studies to find out the cheapest day of the week to book flights. This includes Expedia’s 2024 Air Travel Hacks Report , which used actual flight data to help consumers decide on the most affordable times to book airfare or fly the friendly skies within the U.S. or overseas.

If you’re hoping to save on airfare this year and are curious when you should book and which days of the week to fly, read on to learn more.

Cheapest day of the week to book a flight

So, what is the cheapest day to book a flight? In order to find out, Expedia used data compiled by the Airlines Reporting Corporation , which has information on 15 billion flights across 490 airlines.

While the cheapest day to actually pay for airfare can vary from one week to the next, Expedia data shows consumers who book airfare on Sundays instead of Fridays tend to save approximately 5 percent on domestic and international economy class flights. For domestic business class flights, consumers can expect to save around 7 percent, and for international business class flights, consumers can expect to save around 24 percent.

Expedia also notes that Sunday was the cheapest day to book flights in 2021, 2022 and 2023, but savings rates have varied year to year.

If you want to save more, data from Expedia’s report shows you should book domestic flights at least a month in advance to save an average of 24 percent compared to those who booked last-minute.

Meanwhile, booking international airfare around 60 days out tends to yield the best results, with Expedia data showing savings of around 10 percent for those who booked around that time. However, because average ticket prices peaked around four months out from departure, they also recommend booking no earlier than four months out. This is a clear change from Expedia’s 2023 report, which recommended booking international flights around six months out from departure date.

Most affordable day of the week to travel

While booking your flight on a Sunday helps you get the lowest price, actually flying on a Thursday may help you save an average of 16 percent off airfare. Data shows that, almost across the board, travelers who flew on Thursdays instead of Sunday saved this much on both domestic and international flights.

However, consumers flying domestically can also see significant savings of around 13 percent if they fly out on Saturday instead of Sunday.

What factors impact flight prices?

A range of factors can impact the cost of flights, but most of it boils down to supply and demand. For example, costs for airfare tend to be less expensive during off-peak season to any destination, whereas prices surge during peak travel times when demand is higher.

Fuel costs can also impact flight costs, along with the cost of labor, labor shortages and other underlying issues for airlines. Ultimately, airlines use complex algorithms to determine pricing for their fares, and these factors are just part of the equation.

Tips for finding cheap flights

To get the best deal on domestic or international airfare in 2024, you should:

  • Book airfare on Sunday . As previously mentioned, booking airfare on Sunday is cheaper than other days of the week, especially Fridays.
  • Be willing to fly mid-week . Since Thursdays tend to be the cheapest day to fly, see if you can tweak your travel plans so you depart and fly home during the week instead of on weekend days.
  • Set price alerts . Use a tool like the app Hopper to set up price alerts that notify you when airfare prices drop significantly, or when their technology says it’s the cheapest day to book. Expedia also offers Price Drop Protection in their app for a fee or for free if you’re a Gold or Platinum tier One Key member. If you book a flight that becomes cheaper later on and you have Price Drop Protection, Expedia will refund you the difference.
  • Avoid peak travel times . Not only can traveling off-peak help you score significant savings on airfare and hotels, but Expedia data shows that off-peak travel comes with fewer cancellations and delays overall. Booking early morning flights as opposed to afternoon flights will also make it less likely for you to see delays.
  • Earn airline miles . Consider signing up for frequent flyer programs that let you book airfare with miles you earn for flying and other activities. You can also start racking up miles for airfare with a co-branded airline credit card or travel credit card .

The bottom line

The cheapest days to book flights may be different from one week to the next, and the same is true for the day you actually travel. However, taking a full view of the data shows that some travel dates tend to be less expensive on the booking end and the traveling end — at least most of the time.

Arming yourself with this information is one of the best ways to save on airfare over the long run, but it’s not the only way. If you combine savvy shopping with a huge stash of airline miles, you can pay even less for airfare all year long.

How much is a ticket to Disney? Cheaper than usual this summer

ticket travel one day

Summer can be scorching hot in Florida, but if you can take the heat, you can score some of the best deals of the yea r at Walt Disney World.

Special three- and four-day Magic Tickets bring prices down to under $100 a day for adults, which at Disney and other theme parks means anyone age 10 and up.

Disneyland in California is also offering a summer promo slashing prices in half for kids ages 3 to 9. Admission is always free for children under the age of 3 at both resorts.

Here’s what to know about saving at Disney parks this summer.

How much do tickets to Disney World cost?

Disney World tickets vary by date and park. This year, starting prices for one-day, one-park admission for adults range from $109 at Disney's Animal Kingdom to $124 at Magic Kingdom. Next year , the cheapest one-day, one-park adult tickets will cost $119. On most dates, prices are significantly higher than the starting price.

However, the resort is offering two ticket deals through the summer. The 4-Day, 4-Park Magic Ticket costs $396, which works out to $99 a day. That includes one day at each of Disney World’s four theme parks, without park-hopping or repeating parks. Tickets are valid through Sept. 22 and must be used within seven days of the start date.

The 3-Day, 3-Park Magic Ticket costs $267, which works out to $89 a day. It includes one day each at EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom, without park-hopping or repeating parks. Admission to Magic Kingdom is not included. Tickets are valid through Sept. 24 and must be used within five days of the start date.

Disneyland vs. Disney World: What's the difference? How to choose.

How much does it cost to go to Disneyland?

Disneyland ticket prices also vary by date. One-day, one-park admission starts at $104 for adults and $98 for kids ages 3 to 9. However this summer, child prices drop down to less than $50 per day with a special 3-Day Disneyland Ticket offer.

Guests visiting Monday through Thursday can save the most. Three-day tickets cost $249 for adults and $149 for children, which works out to $83 per day for adults and less than $50 per day for kids with no park hopping. Monday to Thursday tickets may not be used on Fridays or weekends.

Guests who want more flexibility can get 3-day tickets valid any day of the week for $299 per adult (less than $100 per day) and $199 per child (less than $67 per day), without park hopping.

Both types of tickets are valid from June 10 through Sept. 26 and are subject to park reservation availability. Unlike Disney World, Disneyland still requires park reservations for all tickets.

Flight Canceled or Delayed? What to Do

Canceled flights

Key Takeaways

  • Airlines will soon be required to automatically refund travelers for canceled flights.
  • You will be eligible for a refund if your domestic flight is delayed by more than three hours, or if your international flight delay exceeds six hours.
  • Using the airline's app or calling an international airline number is often the quickest way to rebook a flight.
  • The DOT Cancellation and Delay Dashboard shows what each major domestic airline will or will not provide in the event of a cancellation or delay currently.

In April 2024, the Department of Transportation announced a new series of protections for air travelers , including automatic refunds for canceled flights and, in some cases, flight delays. Airlines in the U.S. have six months until they will be expected to start implementing the new rule.

If your flight has been canceled or delayed, read on for step-by-step instructions on how to rearrange your travel plans and whether or not you are eligible for a refund at this time.

What to do if your flight is canceled

1. get on the airline's app – or make an international call.

First, pull up the airline's app on your phone. Most airline apps allow you to easily rebook your flight for free, provided you can supply your six-character reservation code. Getting in line to speak with an agent and calling the airline while you wait is also a good idea (albeit slower than using an app), and social media messaging, texting or WhatsApp may prove helpful. "During times of mass travel disruption, you should try all different avenues for getting help," says Nick Ewen, director of content at The Points Guy.

Ewen also recommends a lesser-known tactic: calling the airline's international numbers. Airlines have offices in Canada, Mexico, the U.K. and more. "While it can be costly, you can often get through to an agent more quickly," Ewen says.

Note that, depending on why your flight was canceled, finding seats on a new flight may alter your travel plans considerably.

2. Book a hotel

Next, determine if you need overnight accommodations. "If you were originally booked on the last flight of the night and there are no other options, grab a hotel room near the airport before they're all taken," Ewen advises.

3. Ask for a refund

If the airline cancels your flight and you're forced to change your travel plans, you are entitled to a cash refund per federal law . Unfortunately, getting a refund can be a lengthy and frustrating process. Most airlines will instead offer a credit for future travel, but before you accept, note that travel credits can come with restrictions, such as blackout dates

Soon, airlines will be expected to issue refunds within seven business days — either in cash or on the credit card you used to book your flight — if you turn down a travel credit.

4. Reference the DOT Cancellation and Delay Dashboard

While you're entitled to a full refund, other flight cancellation policies may vary by airline. Go to the DOT's Cancellation and Delay Dashboard to see what each major airline will and will not offer in the event of a controllable cancellation.

What to do if your flight is delayed

Currently, airlines are not legally obligated to give you a refund for a flight delay unless the DOT determines the delay to be "significant," a term that's defined on a case-by-case basis.

The DOT's new rule defines "significant changes" for the first time, and when it goes into effect later this year, you will be eligible for a refund in the following scenarios:

  • Departure or arrival times for domestic flights exceed three hours
  • Departure or arrival times for international flights exceed six hours
  • There's an increase in the number of connections
  • Departures or arrivals take place at a different airport than the one(s) you booked
  • You're downgraded to a lower flight class than the one you booked
  • You have a disability and your connections are at different airports and/or on different flights that are less accessible

Research other flights

Investigate what other flights on that airline are headed to your destination and ask an agent if they can get you on one of them (without charging change fees). Also be sure to look into what's available on other airlines: If your original airline doesn't have any flights available on your departure date, an agent may be able to book you on a flight with a different carrier at no additional cost to you. Note, however, that airlines are not legally required to do this.

Inquire about other compensation

If you've been stranded at the airport for several hours, check in with an agent and reference the Commitments for Controllable Delays section on the DOT's Cancellation and Delay Dashboard – regardless of whether you're able to get on another flight. Some airlines may provide amenities such as vouchers for meals or overnight accommodations.

Frequently Asked Questions

"The main causes for flight disruptions are bad weather, understaffed air traffic control, and factors within the airline’s control,"  says Katy Nastro, a spokesperson at Going.com, formerly Scott's Cheap Flights. She explains the following:

  • Weather:  This is outside of the airline's control and is the single biggest reason for why we see flight disruptions. We saw this play out over the winter holidays in 2022, and even to some extent during the 2023 holiday season. Even if the weather is accurately predicted, it cannot be controlled, which means at times flight disruptions are unavoidable.
  • Understaffed air traffic control:  The U.S. air travel industry has made strides in pilot hiring year over year, but when it comes to air traffic control, we are still down roughly 1,000 fewer air traffic controllers from a decade ago. New York metro area airports specifically have felt the brunt of this deficit, so much so that airlines were permitted to reduce schedules without penalty from the summer until the end of Q4 in 2023. At its lowest, the decrease in flights in the New York metro area resulted in about 11% fewer flights per day. With less trained staff, current air traffic controllers are stretched to the limit, and schedule reductions only temporarily solve this problem. Even with aggressive hiring efforts, training takes time and will not be a quick fix.

It's almost impossible to avoid canceled or delayed flights these days. But there are a few things you can do when booking flights to lessen your chances for travel disruptions.

Keep tabs on your aircraft: On your departure date, check your flight information before heading to the airport. You can keep a watchful eye on the flight's status – including the aircraft scheduled to operate your flight – using the airline's app or a third-party app such as FlightAware Flight Tracker (which also offers a website ), FlightRadar24 or TripIt Pro.

"As an example, if you're flying from Orlando to New York, and your plane is flying in from Chicago, the initial flight from Chicago to Orlando might be delayed (or canceled) before yours is," Ewen explains. "Airlines will try to find replacement aircraft in that case, but if you can identify a potential cancellation before it officially happens, you may be able to get rebooked ahead of the other 100-plus passengers on your flight."

Consider an alternate airport: When booking your flight, you may consider flying out of a different airport than the one you typically depart from. For example, a small regional airport with limited routes may mean less travel delays and hassle overall – or it may be worth driving further to another international airport for a nonstop flight to your destination rather than opting for a connecting flight close to home.

Fly in the morning: While flight disruptions are unpredictable, historically fewer cancellations and delays occur in the morning.

Avoid weekend travel: Fly on off-peak days like Tuesday or Wednesday. You'll often find cheaper flights on these days, too.

Opt for longer layovers: If you need to take more than one flight to reach your destination, book a flight with a longer layover to provide enough time to make your connecting flight. Keep in mind that at some airports you may need to go through security or customs for your connection. For longer journeys, you can reduce the risk of missing connecting flights by planning a city stopover. For example, Icelandair offers Iceland stopovers for no additional airfare.

Consider a credit card with travel protections: You don't need to be a frequent traveler to take advantage of credit card travel protections and perks. Here are a couple options to consider:

  • Chase Sapphire Preferred :  This travel credit card ($95 annually) provides coverage for delays and cancellations when used to book flights. It also provides other travel protections such as delayed baggage coverage. "Even someone who travels just once or twice a year can still get phenomenal value from this card," Ewen says.
  • American Express Platinum Card :  This card ($695 annually) offers travel insurance that reimburses some nonrefundable expenses like hotel accommodations, meals and other essentials as long as the trip was purchased using the card.

When choosing a travel credit card, you should also pay attention to other benefits. Even the most basic airline credit cards can offer travel perks like discounts on in-flight purchases and waived baggage fees, while premium travel credit cards (which require a higher annual fee) can include access to an airport lounge with food, drinks and Wi-Fi. Some also provide a concierge service to rebook flights or built-in trip insurance to cover unforeseen expenses.

Purchase travel insurance: If your credit card doesn't include travel protections, consider purchasing insurance with flight coverages – even a cheap travel policy can help protect your investment. Covered reasons include a travel carrier delay and loss or theft of travel documents, among other scenarios. If you're interested in purchasing a policy, you can browse the best travel insurance companies here .

Talk to a travel advisor: "Booking directly with your travel advisor provides more leverage and support if something goes wrong," explains Jessica Parker, founder of Trip Whisperer . "We can advocate for a better outcome should there be cancellations or hiccups in the itinerary."

Charlotte French, owner of Cavatica Luxury Travel , agrees, sharing this recent example: "My clients were booked on a nonstop United Flight from Tokyo (HND) to EWR (Newark) in business class, when it was canceled (due to technical issues). The clients were waiting in line to find other options for their return flight home; however, these were very limited. In parallel, I was able to speak to the United Airlines corporate desk (as a travel advisor) and was able to secure them in business class on a flight out of Tokyo the same day."

Avoid checking luggage: Travelers who only travel with a carry-on bag and/or personal item (such as a backpack or purse) that meet carry-on size restrictions will have the most flexibility in rebooking – and will also avoid the chance of lost luggage, another common issue. Some carriers will try to move checked luggage to a later flight for you and will make every effort to keep you and your belongings together. However, when airlines don't have interline agreements with other carriers, you'll have to allow enough time to retrieve and recheck your own luggage.

The number of canceled flights recently fell to its lowest rate in at least a decade — a welcome change for air travelers, especially following COVID-19-era travel disruptions.

Still, flight cancellations will always be inevitable, especially during the busy summer travel season. Summer 2024 is shaping up to be especially busy. "It was the busiest March on record for air travel according to the TSA," explains Nastro. "It also had the tenth busiest day on record, which is pretty significant since it is not a 'peak period' and is generally considered off-season in the Northern Hemisphere. If this trend continues, we are likely in for the busiest summer on record when it comes to air travel."

WASHINGTON — Justice Clarence Thomas on Friday belatedly acknowledged more travel paid by Republican megadonor Harlan Crow, while several colleagues reported six-figure payments as part of book deals.

Thomas, who has faced criticism for failing to report luxury trips paid for by Crow and others over many years, said in his annual financial disclosure that, in 2019, Crow paid for a hotel room in Bali, Indonesia, for a single night, and food and lodging at a private club in Sonoma County, California. He did not report any travel paid by others last year.

The disclosure on Indonesia is curious for what it omits: the rest of the trip. ProPublica reported last year that Thomas flew to Indonesia on Crow’s private jet and then boarded his superyacht for an islands tour, one of many trips Crow has given to Thomas and his wife, Ginni, over the years.

Another justice, Ketanji Brown Jackson, reported eye-popping numbers, a nearly $900,000 advance for her upcoming memoir, and attention-grabbing gifts, four tickets to a Beyoncé concert valued at $3,700 from the singer herself.

Jackson was one of four Supreme Court justices who reported sizable income from book deals. Justice Brett Kavanaugh reported being paid $340,000 by the conservative Regnery Publishing company. The company was sold and the book is to be published by an imprint at Hachette Book Group, according to Axios, which also reported this week that Kavanaugh’s book will deal with his contentious confirmation hearing that included allegations of sexual misconduct, which he has denied. The court confirmed Friday that the justice is writing a legal memoir.

Justices Neil Gorsuch and Sonia Sotomayor reported royalty income of $250,000 and nearly $90,000, respectively.

In their day jobs, the justices are being paid $298,500 this year, except for Chief Justice John Roberts, who earns $312,200.

The only justice whose report was not available Friday is Samuel Alito, who received an extension for up to 90 days, as he does most years. The justice has separately been under scrutiny over flags that flew outside homes he owned. He has said they were raised by his wife.

Jackson, the first Black woman on the nation’s highest court, signed a book contract soon after taking her seat in 2022. The book, “Lovely One,” is to be published in September.

The total value of her book deal has not been publicly disclosed, but it is expected to rival if not exceed what Sotomayor was paid for her memoir, “My Beloved World,” more than $3 million.

Among the current justices, only Roberts, Alito and Justice Elena Kagan have so far not cut book deals. Thomas received a $1.5 million advance, stunning at the time, for his 2007 book, “My Grandfather’s Son.” Justice Amy Coney Barrett in 2022 reported receiving $425,000 for a yet-to-be-released book, part of a reported $2 million deal she signed soon after joining the court in 2020.

The disclosures paint a partial picture of the justices’ finances, as they are not required to reveal the value of their homes or, for those who are married, their spouses’ salary.

The justices adopted an ethics code in November, though it lacks a means of enforcement. The code treats travel, food and lodging as expenses rather than gifts, for which monetary values must be reported. Justices aren’t required to attach a value to expenses.

In March, the federal judiciary began requiring judges to disclose travel-related gifts and their values — rather than reporting such gifts as reimbursements. The justices say they generally abide by the same rules, but Thomas did not disclose the cost of the Bali hotel.

Some Democratic lawmakers are continuing to press legislation that would require the court to adopt a binding code of conduct and provide for investigations of alleged violations. But the prospect for such legislation is considered remote in a closely divided Congress.

Only two justices reported receiving gifts last year. Thomas said he was given two photo albums worth $2,000 by Terrence Giroux and his wife. Giroux is the executive director emeritus of the Horatio Alger Association.

Jackson received artwork for her Supreme Court office worth $12,500. And then there were the Beyoncé tickets, worth more than $900 a pop. Beyoncé performed two concerts in the Washington area in August 2023, though Jackson’s disclosure does not say when or where the tickets were for.

“Justice Jackson is Crazy in Love with Beyonce’s music,” Supreme Court spokeswoman Patricia McCabe said, invoking a Beyoncé song. “Who isn’t?”
