Ketchikan Salmon Fishing Excursions for Cruise Ship Passengers

With our pristine water, close fishing grounds and abundance of salmon, Ketchikan salmon fishing excursions are the best in all of Alaska.

salmon fishing ketchikan alaska cruise ship

Why choose Ketchikan salmon fishing excursions?

To put it simply, we’re the Salmon Capital of the World and for good reason!

Ketchikan began as a fishing camp for the Alaskan natives who knew they could depend on an abundance of salmon every year. It’s no different today where locals and travelers alike count on our annual robust salmon runs. And salmon fishing is built into the very fiber of our culture.

Why choose Chasin’ Tail for Ketchikan salmon fishing excursions?

Born and raised in Ketchikan, I know what makes a day on the water great and what makes the best Ketchikan salmon fishing excursions.

My Half Day Charters are a great way to get out on the water, see the sights and experience the adventure of Alaskan salmon fishing.

I’ll meet you on the dock when your ship berths. Most often Chasin’ Tail will be docked right alongside your cruise ship. It’s one of the fastest departure times in Ketchikan. Then its short travel times, 20 to 30 minutes, to productive fishing grounds in protected waters. And I’ll get you back to your ship in time for departure, dropping you off at the same convenient spot where I picked you up.

Why book your Ketchikan fishing charter directly through Chasin’ Tail?

I think you should go fishing, not get taken fishing. So every Chasin’ Tail fishing excursion is customized for my guests. I want to get to know you and what you want from your fishing excursion to ensure its your trip, your way. When you book directly with me, we have the opportunity to plan an excursion tailored to you. And at Chasin’ Tail, you plan with me, book with me, get picked up by me and fish with me!

Enjoy the Best Fishing Charters in Alaska!

Fishing with Captain Mike was one of the best fishing experiences of my life. We quickly limited out on decent sized halibut. We were reeling in 3 coho at the same time. Lots of fun fishing.

We had an amazing time on our 2 day charter on the Alaska Catch with captain Chris! He was so helpful and such a cool guy. The boat was so nice! It was our 1st time fishing in Alaska and we can’t wait to go back next summer! We HIGHLY recommend the Alaska Catch! You won’t regret it!

We had such a great day of fishing! Captain Joey was great! He knew where to take us to find fish and his sense of humor made it extra fun! We did a combo salmon and halibut charter and all six of us caught a lot of fish that we’re shipping home to enjoy.

We were limited by the time our cruise ship was in port, but that didn't stop Joey from putting us on fish! He worked very hard to keep us in the bite. We caught multiple species: Coho and Pinks, a couple Ling Cod and Rockfish that had to be thrown back and the tiniest halibut also thrown back to grow bigger.

We couldn’t have been happier with our trip and fishing for salmon in Ketchikan. Captain Teddy picked us up from our cruise ship, and we walked to the boat to go fishing. Captain Teddy knew right where the fish were and how to catch it hen. We had two in the boat in less than 10 minutes! After under three hours of fishing, we had 14 fish in the boat with 11 pinks, one chum, one silver, and a huge 30 lb king.

We had an awesome time on our halibut charter with Chris! We caught our limit, he definitely knows what he’s doing. Awesome smooth experience from booking with Mike all the way to the end of the charter. A great addition to our yearly trip to Ketchikan and look forward to booking again!

Ketchikan Salmon and Halibut Fishing Charters

Welcome to Alaska, to Ketchikan , to Fishing Charters at their finest. Known as the salmon capital of the world, Ketchikan really is a world class fishing destination!  Huge numbers of Pacific salmon return to our waters each year and Ketchikan has many great charter fishing opportunities throughout the summer.  All 5 species of Pacific Salmon roam our waters.  They are: King Salmon (Chinook, blackmouth, spring), Coho Salmon (Silver), Chum Salmon (Dog, Keta), Pink Salmon (humpback, humpy), and Sockeye Salmon (Red).  Would you prefer to tackle some white meat?  Try your hand at a HALIBUT FISHING CHARTER! Large numbers of Halibut enter our waters following the Salmon as Salmon are a prime food source for Halibut.  While on your Halibut Fishing Charter in Ketchikan, we also run into Ling Cod, Pacific Cod, and a wide Variety of Rockfish.  Halibut Fishing can be quite a wrestling match.  Most Halibut caught on fishing charters are between 15-40lbs, but Halibut do have the chance of growing very large.  The biggest Halibut caught on a fishing charter  is 459lbs.  Halibut are an exceptional tasting fish as well.  There are so many ways to prepare Halibut, it would be tough to find a more versitile fish.  Salmon fishing and Halibut fishing in Ketchikan is great for another reason…access.  We have very short runs to excellent fishing grounds and even our guests arriving by cruise ship have a great chance at catching Salmon or Halibut. If you would like to book one of our Ketchikan Fishing Charters , whether a Salmon Fishing Charter or a Halibut Fishing Charter ,  CONTACT US and check availability on your date.  Many of the top boats in town book early, so don’t take a chance at losing your private fishing charter!

Would you rather eat a meal that you feel like ordering?  That is the beauty of our all day fishing charters.  You can book the all inclusive lodging, or stay at a vacation rental, cook your food or dine at a local restaurant, and it costs less than the traditional lodge stay.  We leave you plenty of options to design your perfect Alaska fishing adventure.  Our all day charters are a combo of Salmon fishing and Halibut fishing.  This can mean alot of work reeling in fish!

This really was one of the best things we did on our Alaskan cruise. There were 4 of us on the boat and we caught 6 Silver Salmon and a Pink Salmon. Our captain made the experience relaxing and successful. The scenery was outstanding and we saw lots of eagles. I would highly recommend Alaska Strike zone to anyone wanting a good time fishing!
I was extremely pleased with my experience on the boat “Island Time” with Ben and Taylor. The made sure everyone on the boat had multiple chances to catch salmon which made it a very enjoyable and exciting trip. I will never forget pulling in my first silver salmon and the excitement of it all.
Alaska Strike Zone was 100% professional from step one! Our expectations were exceeded greatly. We chartered 3 different boats with 4 family members on each boat. All 3 boats and all 12 family members landed a Silver or more! Our Captain was amazing and extremely knowledgeable. Will for sure book again with the Strike Zone!

We will also have cookies, soda, water and coffee available throughout your charter.

Processing of your catch is done at Clover Pass Resort and will occur immediately after the charter by the experienced staff. Your catch will be iced from the time it is caught until it is filleted, vacuumed packed, frozen and boxed.

Processing rates at Clover Pass Resort run approximately $3.75 per pound for finished product.  Freight is an extra cost and Clover Pass can help you with determining cost.

For the return trip to the Cruise Ship, your Sourdough taxi driver will per-arrange a time to pick your party up that allows for maximum fishing time and to get you back to your ship in a timely manner.

We hope to see you soon.  You might want to see what others have to say about their fishing experience with us by looking at our Reviews .

Ketchikan (Revillagigedo Island Alaska)

Cruise port schedule, live map, terminals, news.

Ketchikan cruise port

Region Alaska

Local Time 2024-06-09 19:03

Port Ketchikan cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Ketchikan, Revillagigedo Island Alaska. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Ketchikan is a port city on Revillagigedo Island (part of Alexander Archipelago, Southeast Alaska) with population around 8,000. The cruise port is near Canada's southern border. All cruise ships dock near downtown.

Port Ketchikan (locode USKTN) is approx 88 mi (140 km) northwest of Prince Rupert (Kaien Island, BC Canada) , and approx 235 mi (380 km) southeast of Juneau AK .

The town was founded in the late-19th-century as a fishing village and incorporated in 1900. The town developed mainly through the fishing and fish-processing industries (canneries). Current-day city's economy is still based on fishing (canneries), as well as on tourism, forestry and services.

Famous sights in Ketchikan are its totem poles - one of the world's most elaborate collections of giant wood carvings. The Totem Heritage Centre houses a collection of authentic poles. At Totem Bight State Park and the Saxman village can be also seen original totem poles as well as enactments of native dances and legends.

Popular seaplane tours include Misty Fjords National Monument (approx 22 mi / 35 east of downtown) and Alaska Bear Adventure (Neets Bay). Also popular among tourists are the fishing charter excursions (salmon, halibut, cod, herring, rockfish) as well as guided eco-tours for wildlife viewing. Ketchikan's most popular restaurants are Alaska Fish House (seafood), Chico’s Mexican (also best for pizzas), Burger Queen, Bawden Street Brewery.

On June 4, 2016, Port Ketchikan's Berth 3 was damaged by the Celebrity Cruises liner  Celebrity Infinity while docking. Due to the sustained serious damages, the pier became inoperative.

  • The collision was caused by a sudden gust of wind and resulted in around USD 0,93 million in damages.
  • The vessel was approaching Berth 3 when a strong wind (up to 20 m/s) pushed it into the structure.
  • Repair works started on June 7, and by July 5 the pier was useable again.
  • During pier's repair, ships in Ketchikan had to use the other 3 piers or anchor near Berth 3 and ferry their passengers via tender boats.
  • In the period June 3 - July 5, the damaged Berth 3 had a total of 35 scheduled/booked ship calls.

On September 25, 2017, Port Ketchikan welcomed its 1 millionth cruise ship tourist in a single Alaskan season (a Fort Lauderdale family with two children on the NCL ship Norwegian Jewel .

Walker Cove (part of Misty Fjords National Monument) is approx 42 mi (68 km) from Ketchikan, and extends approx 9 mi (15 km) into mainland Alaska. Walker Cove is a scenic destination with stunning scenery - towering rocks (on the fjord's both sides) and hundreds of waterfalls. Wildlife seeing opportunities along the shoreline include bears, seals, bald eagles.

In early-November 2019, NCLH (parent company of NCL-Norwegian ,  RSSC-Regent , Oceania ) announced signing a deal for 30-year preferential berthing at Ward Cove. The agreement allowed NCLH to build a new (2-ship pier) at the cruise port. The new pier has capacity to dock simultaneously two liners, each with passenger capacity ~4000. The project was completed in 2020.

Next map shows the locations of the port's 3 dedicated cruise piers (docks 1, 2, 3) and all the passenger terminal facilities.

(NEW) Ward Cove Cruise Terminal

In June 2019, NCL-Norwegian Cruise Line announced the company's plans to construct in Ketchikan a private dock (cruise terminal) in Ward Cove - located approx 5 mi / 8 km north of the city.

For the new 2-berth dock, NCL contracted the Alaskan companies Ward Cove Group (Ketchikan-based, construction works and materials) and Godspeed Inc (Fairbanks, tours). The permit for the construction works was issued on January 21, 2020. Dock-side dredging works will be conducted by the US Army Corps of Engineers.

The new dock will be at the site of the Ketchikan Pulp Company (factory operational between 1954-1997/defunct) which was owned by Louisiana-Pacific Corporation (1973-founded) and is currently ranked the world's largest producer of OSB (oriented strand board) and engineered wood building products.

Ward Cove project's "Phase 1" is expected to cost ~USD 50 million, with scheduled completion in 2020. The project's "Phase 2" includes the building of a passenger terminal and tourist center. NCL will have priority docking rights. Other cruise ships may use it only when NCL is not.

Both new berths can handle Post-Panamax vessels (including the world's largest passenger ships ). Shuttle bus service for cruise tourists from the new terminal to downtown is provided complimentary.

Port Ketchikan's downtown dock currently can handle only one such large vessel at a time. Reconfiguring this publicly-owned dock to allow berthing for more mega-ships was estimated at ~USD 150 million (including shoreside infrastructure improvements).

Roadtrippin’ 2024: Ketchikan’s storied Salmon Walk welcomes residents, visitors alike

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - A fish-themed, walkable path in Ketchikan just steps away from the cruise ship docks there now boasts additional accessibility and artistry, with new-and-improved features for wanderers — especially those wanting to learn more about one of Alaska’s prime exports.

“It’s a really cool thing to be able to walk in and see a wild salmon run, right off one of the ships,” said Ray Troll, an artist whose work is featured throughout the Ketchikan Salmon Walk, a self-guided tour along 1.5 miles of a salmon spawning river in the Southeast town.

“They call it a creek, but anywhere else, this is a nice, raging river,” Troll laughed. “But, you basically follow the salmon here at the mouth of the creek, and you follow it all the way through town. My art is in there, on the panels here and there, but there are other artists represented; it’s not just my artwork you’ll see. We really wanted this to be representative of the community.”

Ketchikan Mayor Dave Kiffer said the Salmon Walk gives residents and tourists alike another good option for exploring the small town.

“You not only get out of the downtown, but you get up in the woods part of the trail,” he said. “This actually goes through the woods, and if you’re here at the right time, you get to see a lot of fish.”

Troll, who’s been in Alaska for several decades and whose work has been featured across the state, spoke about the various informational — and artistic — panels people will come across when journeying along the short trail. One of the earliest along the walkable pathway talks about the Tlingit, Tsimshian and Haida people, who are among the tribes in the Ketchikan area.

“And how important they are in the culture,” Troll said. “There’s also this beautiful story about the creation of salmon that the Tlingit people here have told for centuries. And there’s a totem pole that tells that story right ... There’s Fog Woman, who gave Salmon to Raven, who she married. And there’s another version of that story, in another totem pole in front of the heritage center. And then a 150-year-old totem pole inside, that shows the salmon.

“People are always wondering about the salmon,” he added. “You know, what’s going on? Where are the salmon? So I had this idea, churning in my brain for many years. It just seemed like a natural thing, over the years, to have something that interprets the salmon — that talks about the salmon.”

Kiffer also said there’s a significant importance behind the free walk that is open to the public.

“Anytime that we’re saving, preserving, promoting our local history, it’s a crucial thing,” Kiffer said. “People in Ketchikan — even though the town has only been here 140 years, roughly – the reality is, we’re all very interested in our history. The first thing a Ketchikan person will say is, ‘I’ve been here 20 years,’ or, ‘I’ve been here 30 years,’ or, ‘I’ve been here 10 years.’ It’s a badge of honor.”

Troll said he first came to Alaska in the early 1980s to sell salmon, having already earned a “couple of art degrees.”

“That’s what brought me here,” he said. “They became my muse. And I’ve done all kinds of artwork about salmon over the last 42 years; they’ve kind of fed my career, and my family.”

The Salmon Walk’s dedicated webpage says in part that the walk “takes you into the nature, culture, art, and history of the marvelous fish that return every year to this creek,” and “is dedicated to the importance of salmon and the continuing need to share their stories to encourage stewardship of the fish and their habitat.”

Learn more about the walk and recent updates to the trail — including upgrades to a large section of the path and a special viewing deck along the route, made possibly by Royal Caribbean Group — by visiting the Salmon Walk website .

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Alaska Cruises Insider

The sheer size of Alaska lends itself to a wide variety of terrain and travel experiences. This diversity means you need to be prepared for a lot of change while traveling.

The best time to travel to Alaska depends on your priorities. If you're interested in the Midnight Sun, the longest day of the year is June 21, when you can experience close to 20 or more hours of sunlight in some parts of the state. If you're more interested in the Alaska Northern Lights, the earlier sunset in later summer will allow more contrast and better views of this natural wonder.

No two days will be the same, and you'll need to pack your clothing to prepare for temperature changes throughout the day. Think layers: zip-up sweaters, boots, rain jackets.

They say getting there is half the fun. Usually, I disagree. When I travel, I want to get to where I’m going as quickly as possible to make the most of my time there. However, sailing Celebrity Edge on its maiden Alaska voyage from Seattle, I was all about the journey.

Staring up at the snow-capped mountains through the ship’s floor-to-ceiling windows and watching for wildlife in the icy waters below, I was mesmerized by the famed Last Frontier. And I realized that on an Alaska cruise , the journey is a destination.

Here’s why and what travelers should know about cruising Alaska.

Why is Alaska a popular cruise destination?

Alaska is a bucket-list destination for many people. Some may wait their whole lives for the trip. While Alaska Airlines and other carriers fly throughout America’s largest state , it isn’t as easy to navigate as the Lower 48.

Cruises allow travelers to visit multiple destinations without taking separate flights, renting a car or moving from hotel to hotel. My Edge itinerary included stops in Ketchikan, which is surrounded by the lush Tongass National Forest ; the state capital of Juneau, which is only accessible by air or sea; and Skagway, home of Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park . The ship also carefully navigated the stunning Endicott Arm fjord toward Dawes Glacier, a highlight of the trip.

The easy trip can also be more accessible for people with mobility issues and other disabilities. Like other cruise lines, Celebrity has a team dedicated to accessible cruising . Numerous guests on board my sailing used walkers, canes or wheelchairs. Plus, it’s just nice to be able to take in the dramatic coastlines from the comfort of a cozy cabin or lounge when it’s chilly outside.

Are cruises to Alaska worth it?

They can be. At last check, the lowest price on a seven-night Celebrity Edge Alaska Dawes Glacier sailing, roundtrip from Seattle, for the remainder of this summer is listed at $778 per person on the cruise line’s website, based on double occupancy in an inside stateroom. That does not include travel to or from Seattle nor any taxes or fees, which can balloon the bottom line on any cruise. Nor does it include promotional discounts, which are pretty much always available. After taxes and fees, that works to about $2,212 for two people or $1,106 per person.

The cheapest seven-night Southbound Glacier sailing on the Edge’s sister ship, Celebrity Summit , is much less at $249 per person, based on double occupancy in an inside stateroom. It’s worth noting the Southbound voyage goes from Seward, Alaska, to Vancouver, British Columbia, not a round trip. Also the Summit is not an Edge-class ship , The Celebrity Edge is the first Edge class ship to sail Alaska; it was also the first ship in Celebrity’s most recent series, which also includes the new Celebrity Ascent . Edge-class ships were designed to bring guests closer than ever to their destinations, with their signature Magic Carpet cantilevered platform that extends beyond the ship’s edge and other features that bring the outside in. After taxes and fees, the Summit sailing adds up to about $1,231 for two people or about $615 a person.

Both are cheaper than flying between cities and staying at hotels for a week in Alaska, but they're also cheaper than other popular vacations. For example, seven nights at Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort , a value resort at Walt Disney World , costs $955 for the room alone, including taxes and a summer promo deal. Adding seven days of park tickets, without park hopping, and the total becomes $2,195 for two people or about $1,098 per person, excluding food.

Meanwhile, cruises include all onboard meals – except optional specialty dining and alcohol. There are also a boatload of included activities, like nature talks, tai chi classes, guided arts and crafts, trivia, games and childcare. There’s live music available through the day and nightly stage shows. I sampled a little bit of everything, but for me, the best part of the ship was the views.

Inside Ascent: 3 takeaways from Celebrity Cruises' new ship

Do you see wildlife on an Alaskan cruise?

Yes. I saw whale spouts three times from the ship, though the whales didn’t breach above water. I also saw a handful of harbor seals and a dozen eagles from the ship and from shore. Bald eagles are so common in Alaska that a tour bus driver jokingly called them bald seagulls. There are 30,000 bald eagles in the state, according to the Alaska Department of Fish & Game.

I kept an eye out for bears on an excursion to Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, which is managed by the U.S. Forest Service. I didn’t see any walking along the paved, wheelchair-accessible Nugget Falls Trail, but I did spot all sorts of spring buds and the most beautiful moss.

The ship’s onboard naturalist gave us a heads-up on what to look for and taught us about various species in presentations in the ship’s theater. She also broadcasted live on the ship’s TV channel and inside speakers while traveling through the Endicott Arm. However, her voice wasn’t carried on outside speakers to avoid potentially disturbing wildlife.

What is the best month to go on a cruise to Alaska?

The Alaska cruise season runs from late April to early October, though dates vary by cruise line. Guests who sail early or late in the season may find lower rates than during the height of the summer, but they may miss out on warmer weather.

It was in the 40s to 50s most days of my May sailing, and it rained on our Juneau day. The onboard naturalist warned that there is no bad weather in Alaska, only poor clothing choices.

How much should I budget for an Alaskan cruise?

You should pad your budget with several hundred extra dollars for excursions and dining off-ship. Both can be pricey but enriching. My Mendenhall Glacier excursion was just under $130, including transportation and an off-site Gold Creek Salmon Bake , with all-you-can-eat fresh salmon cooked over a wood-burning fire.  I’ve never had better fried fish than the local halibut at The Alaska Fish House in Ketchikan, and I will be dreaming of the sweet, plump red king crab at Tracy’s King Crab Shack in Juneau for years to come.  If you want freshly caught Alaska seafood, you’ll want to get it at port.

You may be able to spot whales from the cruise ship, but if you really want to go whale watching, salmon fishing, dog sledding, or get up close to glaciers, that’s generally going to require an excursion. Excursions offered through cruise lines tend to cost more than those booked independently, but booking through the cruise line can streamline payment and ensure that the ship won’t leave without you if the excursion runs late.

One port you can enjoy on the cheap is Skagway. You can explore several exhibits and historic buildings on your own, as part of Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. However many visitors splurge on a scenic train ride on the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway up to the Canadian border and back.

Is it worth getting a balcony on a cruise?

Yes and no. The views throughout Alaska are breathtaking, and being able to enjoy them from your cabin any time of day feels luxurious. I loved waking up to mountains, thick with trees, outside my window and scanning the waters for marinelife before bed.

Just over 80% of Celebrity Edge’s staterooms have a balcony. I had an Infinite Veranda , which is unique to Edge-class ships. Rather than a traditional balcony with a sliding glass door, Infinite Verandas incorporate what would be exterior balcony space into the interior of the cabin and have a window that slides halfway down the exterior wall with the push of a button. I loved how much bigger it made the cabin feel and appreciated the extra climate-controlled living space. It was still chilly during my early season sailing, so I rarely put the window down and think I would have enjoyed a non-balcony, oceanview room just as much.

Of course, if you book an inside cabin, you can still enjoy the scenery from public areas of any ship. The Celebrity Edge brings the outside in with tons of windows, including in the buffet restaurant, Oceanview Cafe, where I spotted my first whale spout. In the back of the ship, there’s a relaxing mixed-use space called Eden with three stories of windows that I found myself drawn to daily. The solarium, with its tall windows and rows of lounge chairs, also offered expansive views.

Do I need a passport for an Alaskan cruise?

Maybe. For a closed-loop cruise that starts and ends in the same U.S. port, like the one I was on, all you need is proof of citizenship.

“According to U.S. Customs & Border Protection, this includes an Enhanced Driver’s License, which is a state-issued driver’s license that provides proof of identity and U.S. citizenship; a government-issued birth certificate (issued by the Vital Records Department in the state where the person was born) or passport; and if 16 or older, a government-issued driver’s license or picture ID denoting photo, name, and date of birth,” according to Celebrity.

Of course, not all Alaska cruises are closed-loop cruises. Some start or end in Vancouver, Canada. There are also cruises on several smaller U.S.-flagged cruise lines like Alaska Dream Cruises and Uncruise Adventures , which may not require passports depending on the itinerary.

Can you see the Northern Lights on an Alaska cruise?

It’s possible, but because daylight hours are so long during the summer in Alaska, the best chance to see them would be on a cruise late in the season.

I woke up in the middle of the night a few times to look for Northern Light. I didn’t see any, but I heard passengers on a previous sailing spotted them. Then again, so did people all across the country during the solar storm earlier this month.
