4x4 Pre Cleaner FAQ

Q: Can I use a Pre Cleaner all the time

A: Unifilter’s snorkel Pre Cleaners are not designed for everyday use. We recommend use only in dusty conditions. If the Pre-filters are used all the time the life of the foam will be reduced due to the effects of moisture and the suns UV rays (Ram Head Covers)

Sy-klone series 9001 snorkel pre-cleaner on arb safari snorkel – install & overview.

5th Gen 4Runner Overland Build

Sy-Klone Series 9001 Snorkel Pre-Cleaner Overview and Install on an ARB Safari Snorkel For the 5th Gen 4Runner

In a previous article, I covered the installation of ARB’s Safari Snorkel on my 5th Gen 4Runner, where I discussed the benefits of a raised intake over the stock intake that hides inside the fender.

One thing a raised air intake does is reduce the number of particulates that enter the intake box, however, it’s certainly not the end-all solution. The forward-facing ram-style intake that comes on the Safari Snorkel also allows for any incoming particulates to head straight down the pipe and into the air filter.

Why You Need a Pre-Cleaner

5th Gen 4Runner Dirt in Airbox

Bugs, dust, and vegetation are the common infiltrators with the standard top and over time they can cause a premature replacement of the air filter. Some solutions to this problem include reversing the snorkel head to have it face backward which is only advised for low-speed operation in heavy dust or using an oiled “sock” over the intake to collect incoming dust. Both of these options may help slightly, but neither solve the problem entirely.

Why the Snorkel Upgrade (Sy-Klone)

Sy Clone Air Ram for Snorkel for 5th Gen 4Runner

To improve air quality, and remove additional particulates, we look to a product that has aided the military and commercial operations for decades. The product is the Sy-Klone Series 9001 pre-cleaner available exclusively for the off-road market through Snorkel Upgrade . The Series 9001 is a dome-shaped snorkel intake replacement that uses the power of centrifugal force to separate solid particulates from clean air.

This is the final solution to the dirty filter problem that plagues so many expedition-style vehicles that promise to:

  • Increase your air filter service life
  • Decrease potential blockages from snow and other debris
  • Keep your engine as healthy as it can be as far as air is concerned

How it Works

Sy Clone Air Ram for Snorkel for 5th Gen 4Runner

Inside the dome, the housing is a series of blades set on a sealed bearing assembly. As your engine creates a vacuum in the intake/snorkel, fresh air is drawn into the bottom of the dome through a set of louvers. These louvers force the entering air to circulate upwards into a rotating impeller creating a “Sy-Klone” effect within the dome. This cyclone uses the power of physics and centrifugal “force” to force any airborne particulates with mass greater than air to the outside of the dome as it’s being whirled around. But where does all of that stuff go? The Series 9001 has a small slit in that dome with an opening to allow those trapped particulates out of the dome and away from your air intake. Science!

For a complete explanation of the trickery behind the 9001, click here for an overview from Snorkel Upgrade!

Install Overview

Snorkel Air Ram Removal for 5th Gen 4Runner

Installing the Sy-Klone onto the snorkel is a simple process.

Measure your snorkel inlet to make sure you have the correct Series 9001 snorkel (the ARB snorkel has a 4” inlet). Once you know you have the correct model, remove the standard forward-facing snorkel head with whatever hardware it came with.

Sy Clone Air Ram for Snorkel on 5th Gen 4Runner

Set the supplied stainless steel t-bolt band clamp on the neck of the Sy-Klone and snug it up to keep it from falling off when you place it on the snorkel.

Sy Clone Air Ram for 5th Gen 4Runner Snorkel Intake

Set the pre-cleaner on the snorkel top with the slot facing straight back towards the rear of the 4Runner. This allows debris to exit the dome without turbulent interference.

Snorkel Air Pre-Cleaner for 5th Gen 4Runner

Tighten the clamp until the pre-cleaner is snug on the snorkel body and grab your cold beverage to celebrate your victory in the battle against dirty air!

ARB Safari Snorkel with Pre-Cleaner on 5th Gen 4Runner

Now that you’ve installed and admired your new Series 9001 pre-cleaner, I’ll cue you in on a couple more bonus design details.

Sy-Klone Details

ARB Snorkel Pre Cleaner Installation on 5th Gen 4Runner

With a downward-facing inlet, the Sy-Klone skirts one of the known issues with forward-facing snorkel inlets, snow/ice accumulation. Those that have driven through heavy wet snow know that the grille on the face of a standard snorkel can quickly clog and ultimately require clearing to function properly.

Pulling air from below reduces the likelihood of clogging due to ice build-up, keeping you moving forward even in the worst storms. In severe conditions where snow build-up occurs on the lower grid is unavoidable, the first grid can be unscrewed and removed. From here, any snow that enters the dome will be ejected out the back just like any other particulate. Pretty rad!

5th Gen 4Runner Pre Filter for ARB Snorkel

Trails are full of trees, rocks, bushes, and other items that are right at the height of your snorkel inlet. In a scenario where a tree branch impacts your standard snorkel head, the force could damage your a-pillar where it connects to the top of the snorkel, maybe even your fender! The Sy-Klone has built-in relief points in the main structure that are designed to break if there is a large impact. This sacrificial design keeps your snorkel and bodywork intact if something unexpected happens when you’re out having fun!

 Final Thoughts

MGM 5th Gen 4Runner with ARB Safari Snorkel

You installed a snorkel on your 4Runner for a reason (or a few), why not take it to the next and end-all level? The addition of the Sy-Klone Series 9001 pre-cleaner to your snorkel adds protection to your motor, increases your filter service life, and provides a few key design advantages over the typical forward-facing snorkel head.

The only thing I wish was addressed with this product is the gap between the bottom of the pre-cleaner and the “step” on the top part of the ARB snorkel. You can cut down the top of the snorkel to mate the pre-cleaner to that ridge, but with limited clearance to the a-pillar, there isn’t really any room to trim it shorter. Other snorkels (Dobinsons) may vary , but I’ll likely add a black sleeve to this small section for appearances’ sake.

From the driver’s seat, the Sy-Klone isn’t really noticeable, unless you lean down a bit like in this photo. There isn’t an increase in wind noise that’s noticeable to me, even with the window down. The only thing you will note is an increase in “intake growl” under load with the passenger window down. I’m more than OK with that, especially in low-range plowing through the snow at high RPM!

I am very excited to give this product a go and really test how well it performs in the Central Oregon dust this summer. I’ll be back after some trips and miles to report back on how the Series 9001 has faired and how dirty my air filter looks… OR DOESN’T!

To order yours head over to Snorkel Upgrade , the exclusive retailer of the Sy-Klone for the overland/off-road market!

I’ve been using the Sy-Klone 9001 for almost a year and love it. When I check my air cleaner filter, it always clean now.

Unsealed 4X4

Should you fit a snorkel sock to your 4×4?

200212 Snorkel Sock (1 Of 2)

Some swear by them, others reckon they’re restrictive and too easily blocked. So, should you fit a snorkel sock on your 4X4?

We all know the benefits of fitting a snorkel on your 4X4; clean air, improved water fording and so on. And we all know the importance of fitting quality filters on our 4X4s. Snorkel socks aren’t new and there are plenty of people who run them, especially those living in dusty areas or areas with bug problems (think locusts), but just what is a snorkel sock and is it a good idea to fit one on your 4X4? Read on.

What is a snorkel sock?

A snorkel sock is exactly what it says on the tin. A sock that goes over the head of your snorkel (there are some that sit inside the snorkel too), with the intention of catching some of the debris that would typically make its way down your snorkel, and into your airbox. It’ll pick up block out debris like leaves and twigs, all the way down to the bigger dust particles that you’ll get from being too close in convoy on a dusty dirt road. Sounds good so far, right?

What are they worth?

A snorkel sock will cost you around $25 for a decent quality over-the-ram-head job (that’s all we paid for the one used in the images on this article). The internal ones are a touch more, up to $75 depending on the model and brand. So they’re a relatively cheap bit of kit, primarily as they’re marketed as being washable (and thus reusable).

Does it actually catch ‘a lot’ of dust?

Absolutely they do to the point that they work maybe a little too well. Wait? What? Let’s say you’re heading up the Oodnadatta track with a convoy of mates, and you sitting too close and suck up dust into your intake kilometre after kilometre. The sock will catch a hell of a lot of that dust, especially if it’s of the ‘oily’ variety. Depending on how close you’re sitting to the ass-end of the four-wheel drive in front, will vary how quickly your sock will fill up and begin limiting airflow.

Speaking personally, I’ve had one chock up full of dust, stop flowing air, and get torn through my ram-head within 45 minutes of driving. Yep, I was way too close to the 4X4 in front, but lesson learned. Where this becomes a problem is that if you’re a little less enthusiastic about getting to your destination than I am, and say it takes four hours for yours to fill up, how many are you going to need spare, and how many will you need to wash every night at camp? That’s not to mention that if you’re a little over-zealous with how much petrol you use to wash it out, or how quickly you throw it back over the snorkel head and, well, diesels don’t like sucking in petrol fumes.

Insofar as cleaning the snorkel sock is concerned, as per the UniFilter cleaning and oiling instructions, you need to clean the filter with mineral turpentine or Unifilters own cleaner, and then re-oil with Unifilter’s Filter Fix oil, which can be bought separately.

Can you run them permanently?

Nope, a snorkel sock should not be a permanent fixture on your snorkel. The reason for this is that like anything you leave in the sun and weather; it’ll deteriorate. Being a rubberised foam, the UV rays and water will kill it rather quickly. So if you’re set on running one, because it looks shiny (and don’t get me wrong, that’s the main reason why I used to run one), it’ll fall apart quickly, and get sucked down into your air-filter and start blocking it up with bits of foam. They do also increase fuel consumption and put a touch more strain on your turbo and engine due to reducing airflow. And this increases as they begin to fill up with dust.

Do you really need one?

This is the big question. The short answer is, no. And that’s because your factory air-filter will catch everything the sock will (and more), while still having a much greater surface area for the dust it catches to sit in, slowing down how quickly it’ll clog up and thus not reducing any airflow (or, reducing it more slowly). The other answer as to why you don’t really need one is that if you are heading across the Oodnadatta track in convoy, back off enough to get out of the dust. It’s a hell of a lot safer, you’ll see more of the road as you’re driving, and you won’t get nearly as much dust into your intake.

The other side of that, is if you’re making a short trip, and know it’s going to be proper dusty, and you can’t get away without driving in someone’s dust, and you understand all the hassles that the snorkel socks have, then, by all means, use one ( Toyota owners pay attention! ). They’re also magic for stopping big debris getting down your intake. Think bugs, locusts, crickets, and whatnot, but then we’ve heard of some people living out west having to deal with locust simply clamping fly screen over the top of the snorkel to keep out the bugs.

unless you need to cross deep water, then the answers is 100% NO! There is no benefit and adding an oil soaked sock will actually hinder performance. Don’t get suckered into another 4×4 aftermarket gimmick.

Im pretty much on board with Jims comments. However in 30 plus years of using Uni filters on my trailbikes & customers rally cars the product is brilliant, fit for purpose & never had one fall apart. My concern would be the surface area of the intake is not very big & maybe clog quickly in heavy dust. Refer Jim “actually hinder performance”. If it were me id be very happy with one but would love to fit a larger intake top section to help with this. More work but do they make a replacement main filter ? Possibly 2 stage so easy to slip off outer & keep rolling ?. Good enough for the best rally teams, good enough for me.

I use washable unifilters and carry oiled spare foam sheets for quick switchover in the main box. The paper filter and gasket on the factory filter are not up to dealing with bulldust. They let it past. I carry two preoiled socks as well. They can be removed and tapped or scraped to get the bugs off. They extend the life of the washable filter substantially.

Decided they were way too messy for me, even though I like the idea. I actually use an aftermarket vortex filter head I can swap out for the ram head, when needed. Catches an awful lot and it is simple to empty at camp of a night. Keeps the main filter very clean, and did not seem to cause issues with performance or exhaust has temps.

Ultimate Protection

A minimal amount of water ingested into a diesel engine is enough to cause an engine to fail. Safari Snorkels move the air intake to a higher position to give you the ability to navigate off road conditions that involve water and dust in the vehicle’s path. The Safari Air Ram simultaneously removes the maximum volume of water from the incoming air stream with its unique water separating technology, while efficiently flowing the maximum required airflow.

As well as water, dust can be equally as damaging to your 4x4’s engine. By raising the air intake to the roof level of the vehicle, a Safari Snorkel provides cleaner air to your engine that’s free from low lying dust in the vehicle’s path. Safari Snorkels ensure the ultimate protection for your 4x4, no matter the conditions or path you are faced with

The Process

The development process begins with every vehicle being 3D Laser Scanned utilizing Safari’s Romer Absolute 3D scanning arm. This creates an exact digital model of the vehicle with scanning system tollerances within 0.08mm ensuring all Safari Snorkels provide the best fit for your vehicle. Utilizing the latest in 3D modelling software, extensive design and engineering is carried out to ensure optimum airflow and aesthetics are achieved. The next step in the process is to 3D print prototypes of the main components of the Snorkel system for trial fitment and airflow analysis.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

safari snorkel uni filter

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

safari snorkel uni filter

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

safari snorkel uni filter

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

safari snorkel uni filter

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

safari snorkel uni filter

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
