Without looking at a map or using a calculator, I guess Encino, California, near Los Angeles. It’s kind of far from Scotland, Sao Paulo, and the Philippines. If one draws a circle around the Philippines, one edge might get close to Africa but the sign shows that Ghana is far away.

GeoGuessr is just the beginning for virtual tourism

It’s basically a pub quiz meets Race Across The World.

It’s 3pm in London. You’ve just had lunch and now you’re bored – slacking off, even. You decide to take a ten-minute detour from the office to Bali, so you dangle and drop Google Maps’ little yellow person somewhere near Ubud and start clicking your way around the Indonesian province, enjoying the light blue water, yellow-white sand and abundance of motorcycles. Later, you decide to go somewhere in Svalbard, the most northerly-inhabited place on Earth, where there’s just 360 photographs to view and no roads to click down. It looks untouched and freezing.

For your last stop, you drop at random and poke around, trying to guess where exactly you might have ended up. ​ “ Spanish writing, loads of mountains, maybe it’s Bolivia”, you catch yourself saying to a colleague over Slack. Back in 2018, Google reported that people dropped themselves in random places using Maps’ dice feature 190 million times the previous year. It seems we love to use street view and Google Earth as means of exploration, and things become even more fun, apparently, when we don’t have the foggiest idea what we’re looking at.

For those taking their guesses to the next level, GeoGuessr is the main event. Invented back in 2013 by Swedish IT consultant Anton Wallén, GeoGuessr is described by the New Yorker as being ​ “ halfway between a treasure hunt and a crossword” . Basically, it drops you in a random place, and you have to then guess where you are by trying to locate yourself on a map. Landmarks, types of sand, trees and signposts are the only hints you get. The closer you get, the more points you win.

“ GeoGuessr started as a random location generator which randomly dropped the user on different locations,” Wallén told The Independent . ​ “ After a while I felt like it needed something more and decided to add the game element.”

It seems Wallén’s instincts for gamification were correct. There’s about 30 million people playing GeoGuessr at the moment . And it’s not just the exploring we love, either – watching someone else tour the world while winning points is proving to be just as riveting.

Sullygnome ​ ’ s statistics say that over half a million hours of GeoGuessr streams have been watched on Twitch in the last two weeks. This is probably partly because people love watching people play games in general, but it’s also likely because GeoGuessr switched from being free to having some paid-for features. Over on YouTube, the people’s champion of the game is GeoWizard , who has well over a million subscribers and can figure out where he is within minutes. Another of the best GeoGuessrs goes by georainbolt , who can predict where he is based on the aesthetic of telegraph poles. Fascinatingly niche skill, right?

The detective approach to digital travel also indicates how GeoGuessr can sometimes be used as an educational resource. One critical analysis of GeoGuessr says the game can ​ “ help students grow an interest in other countries and develop critical skills to analyse geographical and cultural landscapes”.

But why is everyone so obsessed? Well, there are likely many reasons why people love playing GeoGuessr, even just for five minutes. Firstly, guessing at anything kind of fun. That’s why we like the picture rounds in a pub quiz or watching Pointless on the box, after all. The human urge to try and know it all, or at least think we can solve puzzles, is strong.

Plus, exploring is objectively a great thing. It shows us other ways of living and approaches to society, and can inform us on how we choose to live (ever spoken to people who went on a gap year?). But hopping on a plane and doing that for real is getting increasingly pricey. Being able to fractionally replicate the gap yah experience from your own gaff, then, has an obvious appeal. It’s good for your wallet and for people who are less able to explore, like those with disabilities.

But why stop at Google Maps? Might we be able to more accurately replicate going somewhere through technology in the future? It’s possible. VR and AI have boomed in recent years – mainly in gaming, sure, but that technology would be well suited to virtual travel, too. And arguably, the metaverse is a form of virtual travel, as you hop into a digital world and explore a variety of things from shops to games to social spaces. In the same way, a world where we could don some form of VR headset to go and look at Machu Picchu sort of already exists. In October last year, the Boca Raton Museum of Art unveiled an exhibition where you can immersively walk around the historical site. No, you can’t inhale that fresh Peruvian air through a headset, but it’s a start.

And people are keen to give it a go anyway. Research published last year found that from 2017 to 2020 the revenue generated from marketing VR tourism ​ “ increased from 50 million to 1 billion”, which is some major growth. But here’s the problem: that revenue doesn’t always end up going to the IRL place, which is, er, a bit murky to say the least – particularly when so many countries’ economies depend on tourism.

But hey, whatever form virtual tourism may or may not take, it’s clear that we’re all pretty into the idea of using the internet to satiate our wanderlust. GeoGuessr having an absolute moment included.

Do you miss traveling? Visiting other countries and cities? Do you even just miss walking around your own city streets in a big crowd of other people? There hasn't been much of that this year, what with... well, everything.

Just as importantly, do you miss playing GeoGuessr , the browser game that plopped you onto a random spot in Google Maps street view so you could try to guess where you were? These days you have to pay to play GeoGuessr—it doesn't cost much, but I imagine the paywall keeps a lot of people away.

If you answered yes to any of the questions above, you might like City Guesser . It's a browser game that's a lot like GeoGuessr, but it uses video and it's free.

Start up a game and you'll see a full-screen (sometimes even 4K) video of a city somewhere the world. The camera person typically walks around for a while so you can begin to gather clues as to where you are. When you think you know what city you're in, click the Start Guessing button at the bottom of the screen. On the pop-up map, scroll around and make your guess, then see how close you were.

Sometimes the videos are a bit of a giveaway—in one I played, the camera tilted up to reveal the unmistakable Christ the Redeemer statue, so that was a pretty big (and tall) hint. Other times you can spot signs clearing stating where you are. But there are plenty of videos where you have piece together clues—license plates, storefronts, or a skyline that seems familiar—to make a solid guess. There's audio, too, so maybe you'll hear someone speaking a particular language in the background. If your guess is within a mile of the right spot, you'll get a little burst of confetti to celebrate.

You can play City Guesser with locations from all over the world, or narrow your focus—there are options to play with just cities in the US, Europe, Canada, Asia, and other continents and countries. There's even a game just for monuments. 

Give City Guesser a try here . It's not as challenging as GeoGuessr, but it's honestly really nice to get out of the house and walk around in a crowd for a while, even if it's only a virtual one.

The Geotastic game works exactly like GeoGuessr. Each round loads a Street View image of some place on Earth. By panning around, you must guess where you are and drop a pin on the map. The closer the pin is to the actual location, the more points you get.

So why is Geotastic free while GeoGuessr is paid? Well, as you might have guessed, Geotastic is ad-supported. You'll need to view a 15-second video ad each time you log in, but that's a worthy price of admission, right?

2. Hide and Seek World (Web): Multiplayer Free GeoGuessr Game for Fastest Guess

Geotastic is easily the best of the free GeoGuessr alternatives, but I have to admit, I found myself playing Hide and Seek World (HaSW) for a longer time. There's something more fun about its interface, as you try and compete against other players online to get closest to the Street View image shown.

You can either create your own game to play with your friends or join a Find Wolly public game. Wolly is HaSW's AI mascot who creates public games and "hides" in a location. All players then race to pin the location on a map, with points distributed according to who is closest and fastest, in that order.

The ticking clock for the countdown, the live-view game room where you see how close or far others are, and the pressure to get it right all come together for a fun experience. But know that you can only play two public games per day in the free version, while private games have no restrictions.

3. Geography Game (Web): Click the Right Country on a 3D Globe

How good are you at identifying countries not on a political map of the world but on a 3D globe? Geography Game is a smooth and beautiful way to test your knowledge of the world atlas. The name of a country or territory will pop up on the screen, and you have to click where it appears on the globe.

You can select a region (continents, 50 states of USA) or open up the whole globe. There are two game modes. In Traditional Mode , you'll be asked to identify all countries worldwide at least once. In Random Mode , territories are asked randomly for a predetermined number of rounds. All correct answers will stay highlighted, so you don't click them again.

By default, after three incorrect tries, the right answer will start blinking on the map. However, in the advanced settings, you can choose to disable showing the right answer or increase the number of incorrect tries before it is shown. You can also choose whether you want to be able to skip an answer or not.

4. City Guesser (Web): Guess the City From a Walking Video

City Guesser is a different take on the concept started by GeoGuessr. It replaces the Street View images with short walking videos taken by real people. Guess the city from the sights and sounds of the video in the shortest time possible to earn the maximum points.

There's a surprisingly wide collection of these videos bundled into several categories. As you might expect, you get the full world, continents, countries, famous states, and famous cities. But there are also special collections like busy places, fast food, nighttime places, coastal cities, beautiful views, etc. Those are actually a lot more entertaining and challenging.

Additionally, City Guesser offers a few game modes to up the stakes. There's a Streaks Challenge to see how many countries you can guess correctly in a row or set a radius limit to see how close you can get before a wrong answer. And there's a self-explanatory time limit challenge, along with an entertaining "no moving challenge" where the videos are taken from a stationary camera looking at a city in action.

5. Terraclues (Web): Scavenger Hunt to Solve Clues and Guess the Places

Terraclues calls itself a scavenger hunt built on top of Google Maps. The idea is to solve a clue whose answer is a location, and then pinpoint the location on a map of the world.

Here's how it works. Each hunt has a series of clues. The clues appear in a text box in the top-left. You can search in the box for a location, or use it to run a Google search in a new tab to solve the clue. Then you can return to the box to type the location name.

Often, you will need to zoom in or zoom out to the specified magnifying number for Terraclues to accept that you've solved the clue. You might even have to switch from Map view to Satellite view for certain answers. These varieties only make Terraclues more fun.

There are already a lot of user-created scavenger hunts available for free to play on the website. You can also create your own hunts and open them to the public, or share them privately with friends. You don't need an account to play, but you do need to register to create your own hunts.

This is only an online scavenger hunt. If you want to physically participate in solving clues and locating things, there are excellent apps for scavenger hunts that you can try.

6. The City Map Quiz (Web): Guess the City From an Unlabelled Map View

Google Maps has gotten all of us used to the look of top-down views of maps, noting roads, train lines, waterways, parks, and other landmarks. But can you guess which city it is if all the labels are removed? Put it to the test at The City Map Quiz.

Each level of the quiz shows a snapshot of a map of one part of a city, removing all points of interest, pins, or labels. You'll be given four options with it. Click the right one, and it turns green, the wrong one turns red.

By default, it starts with a worldwide city map quiz of 34 levels. But you can choose categories, such as countries or continents, and even select difficulty levels within that at times. Some of these require a paid subscription for $2.95 per month, but the free collection of map quizzes is large enough to test your skills.

7. Zoomtastic (Web): Guess the Place From a Satellite Map That Zooms to Reveal More

If you can stay productive and not get addicted to Zoomtastic, you're a better person than many others on the internet. This geography game is so intuitive, fun, and irresistible that it's advisable only to play it when you don't have a lot of work to do.

Here's how it works. First, you choose either world, cities (with options for continents or world capitals), or wonders of the world. Depending on your choice, a random satellite map will appear on the screen, and a countdown starts. After every few seconds, the map zooms out or zooms in, revealing more details about the location.

After 10 seconds, you'll see four possible answers to choose one. It displays which hemisphere it's from in the top-right corner. In the Wonders version, you can also avail of clues like a picture or the country's flag.

Play Anywhere, PC or Touchscreen

All the games in this article work on any web browser and are surprisingly good for touchscreen devices. Phone screens do feel cramped, especially when you need to see the place and the map simultaneously, but the experience on iPads or tablets is excellent. So go ahead, and test your geography skills.

We live in an age of unprecedented access to digital technology – and with it, brand new ways of exploring the world around us.

While it's not quite the same as seeing, say, the Mona Lisa or Christ the Redeemer in person, some of the world’s most popular and remote destinations have created libraries of online images and video, as well as 360 degree virtual tours that let you virtually explore museums, galleries, world wonders and even national parks.

Here a just a few of the best digital tours that let you wander the world from wherever you may be social distancing.

See the seven wonders of the world

If there’s anything capable of whetting your appetite for world travel, it is the new seven wonders of the world:  the Great Wall of China , the ancient city of Petra , the Taj Mahal , the Colosseum , Machu Picchu , Christ the Redeemer , and Chichen Itza . Thankfully there are impressive virtual tours of each from The New York Times , AirPano , Google , and Panoramas .

With modern technology, you can even see the last standing wonder of the ancient world— The Pyramids of Giza . There are a few other wonders that might not make it into to the top seven but are still worth a digital peek, like the Alhambra , Seville's La Giralda , and even Easter Island.

Best virtual museum tours

In recent years, Google has partnered with over 2,5000 art museums to upload high-resolution versions of millions of pieces of art. Highlights include New York’s MoMA , DC’s National Gallery of Art , Chicago’s Art Institute , the Casa Battl ó, and Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum to name a few.

In addition, The Louvre offers a virtual tour , as do The Vatican Museums , many of the Smithsonian Museums , the Russian Museum , the top-rated British Museum , the Minneapolis  Museum of Russian Art , and the Palace Museum in Beijing.

You may not be able to kiss the Blarney Stone right now, but you can tour the Blarney Castle from afar. You can also visit the Museum of Flight,  the Museum of Science, the Museum of Natural History,  the National Women's History Museum  and Boston's History of Science Museum .

While museums are often an inherently visual experience, there's a lot to be learned from archives of past lectures and tours like the ones preserved online by Nashville's Frist Museum , the Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the Smithsonian American Art Museum,  the Frick , and others.

Explore national parks

While travel to National Parks is best avoided for the time being, you don't need to miss out on the scenery. Virtual Yosemite is absolutely stunning and one of the best, replete with audio. Both Yellowstone National Park and Mount Rushmore offer virtual tours as well. 

Google has similar 360 degree audio-visual tours of five select national parks, including Kenai Fjords, Hawai'i Volcanos , Carlsbad Caverns, Bryce Canyon , and Dry Tortugas, as well as 31 more on Google Earth . You can also get an up-close look at almost 4,000 pieces of artwork, artifacts, and other treasures related to the history and culture of the national parks, and view online exhibits .

Digital safaris

Wildlife is a big draw for travelers, whether it's sighting some of the Big Five in Africa, glimpsing whales in North America, or introducing your children to new animals in person on a family safari . But if you're forays into the bush are grounded for now, many zoos and aquariums have created digital access to their habitats.

You can easily watch several live webcams of some of the nation’s greatest zoos and aquariums, including the  San Diego Zoo , Houston Zoo , Zoo Atlanta , the Tennessee Aquarium , and the Georgia Aquarium . Additionally you can see Canadian farm animals doing their thing , or you could watch Stella the Dog jump endlessly into huge piles of Maine leaves.

GeoGuessr Game Uses Street View to Create a Geographical Puzzle

A geographic discovery game based on Google imagery, GeoGuessr requires players to guess various locations worldwide using only the clues provided by a Street view. Created in 2013, the game has taken on new relevance amidst the pandemic, as it provides a virtual travel experience. From desolate roads to famous sites, the game teases deductive reasoning, requiring players to make use of any clue, from signs, language, flags, landscape, to pinpoint their surroundings.

An interesting use of a ubiquitous tool, the game, transforms Google Street view's utilitarian nature into a fun challenge. The simple, stripped back design makes it easy to navigate, relying on the visual language of Google Maps. The player chooses a map containing five rounds and drops a pin to lock the guess. The closer the guess to the location of the street view, the higher the score.

There are numerous maps to explore, both official and user-generated and new ones are added constantly. Official maps focus on individual countries, famous places, with a more general one, Word. However, maps developed by users explore a vast array of topics, from bird-eye views, European stadiums and even a map featuring Mc Donald's venues. Each map displays a difficulty level and the number of locations available.

Players can take advantage of the mobility provided within street view and explore the surrounding area of the location in search of clues. The default settings have no time limit; however, players can set one themselves and restrict movement, panning and zoom to increase the difficulty of the GeoGuessr has several game modes: Battle Royale, where players face each other and are subsequently eliminated, the Daily Challenge, Country Streak, where players have to guess countries in a row and Explorer Mode, where players pick a country and recognizer places to earn medals.

City Guesser – Learn Geography through Virtual Video Tours

City Guesser is a geography quiz game designed to test users geography knowledge. The way City Guesser works is simple: you are provided with a short video footage of a specific location and you are to make a guess about the name of that location using the provided map. City Guesser supports both individual and multiplayer game modes allowing users to compete against friends and players from all around the world.

The idea behind City Guesser, as explained by its creator, is to provide people with a way to explore the world through virtual video travel. Since its launch on August 13th, 2020, City Guesser has witnessed a huge popularity especially among geography enthusiasts. 

City Guesser is totally free and does not require any sign up or software download. As a teacher, you can use the geography game City Guesser to develop students geographical literacy, sharpen their mapping skills, improve their spacial awareness, and boost their cultural literacy . The multiplayer mode is especially helpful and students can use it to compete in groups to solve geography based quizzes. 

City Guesser offers a wide variety of maps that you can use to play the location-guessing game. Some of these maps include:

• Busy Places Map: Players try to guess the locations of some of the most crowded streets around the world.
• Major Cities Map: Guess the name of  locations that have over  5000.000 population.
• Coastal Cities Map:  Players guess the names of cities bordering the ocean
• Capital Cities Map: Players guess the names of  capital cities
• Snowy Landscapes : Players guess the names of  snow-covered locations

How to play City Guesser?

Head over to City Guesser, choose an option (e.g, a city, a monument, a country, etc) and click to enter. Watch the displayed video and focus on clues embedded in the recording.  To make a guess, click on Start Guessing button at the bottom of the screen and use the map to mark the location. Use the + and – buttons to zoom in and out. 

Click on the name of the location within the map to mark your answer then click on Guess. City Guesser will provide you with feedback about your answer. To play another guess, click on Next button or click on Home to go back to City Guesser’ s homepage.

Helpful tips for playing City Guesser

Use the following tips to help you make correct guesses:

• Pay attention to the language spoken in the background of the video. Recognizing the language spoken will help in knowing the place, but language alone is not enough.
• Focus on signage (e.g., road signs and banners). They can provide clues about the city they are in.
• Check for  license plates. These are clues that reveal states and provinces
• Business signs and flags can also help you determine locations.
• Pay attention to building architecture, weather, people’s dress code, etc.

Multiplayer gamemode

City Guesser multiplayer gamemode enables you to play against friends and geography enthusiasts from all around the world. You can either create a private room where you  invite friends or students and play together. 

As the moderator of the room you get to control the settings of the game, for instance time per guess, number of rounds, and measurement unit (e.g., miles or kilometres). When you create a private room, copy and share the generated link with your friends or students so that they can join your room and start collective play.

Alternatively you can join a random group and play against users with different skill levels from all around the world.

GeoGuessr: Virtual Travel Gamified (and it's Addictive!)

While the entire nation grapples with the fierce second wave of Covid-19, traveling has been put to halt. As people continue to find new & interesting ways to keep themselves engaged while being confined in their homes, there is an online game that has suddenly picked up immense popularity.

The reason? This game has been bestowing its players with a little escapism, sightseeing and global knowledge. A near-perfect recipe for what might satiate travelers and explorers like you and I!

GeoGuessr is a game which places you in a 360º photograph taken somewhere in the world ( via Google Street View), and challenges you to pinpoint where you are on a map. The random location you will be thrown in could be a city, a village, woods, a barren desert, curvy mountain roads with no human settlements - anywhere!

The game has had a surge in interest in recent months, as players and streamers continue to build large followings on Twitch and YouTube. Here's one example with popular Indian comedian-streamer Samay Raina playing GeoGuessr with Biswa Kalyan Rath and Kumar Varun.

The game has a limited free trial wherein you can play only 1 challenge per day, but the paid version (10-day free trial followed by approximately 200 INR per month) will grant you unlimited access.

There are multiple modes in GeoGuessr. The most popular ones are:

Battle Royale

You are pitted against 9 other random players, and each round shows up a location for you to guess. Everyone gets 60 seconds and the person whose guess is farthest from the actual location, gets eliminated, while the remaining players proceed to the next round. This follows successively till the last geographer standing wins!

Play by Map

As the name suggests, you choose the country/continent/region within which you want to play the guessing game. There's an India option too, for some domestic virtual exploration!

Country Streak

This is my personal favourite mode. Here, you have to guess the country you are in and maintain a streak of correct guesses. The world record is 122, and my top score is 14... It's tough, no kidding!

Also, the game allows you to play solo or to challenge your friends for a multiplayer game, for any mode.
