Acadia National Park

Sweeping mountain views, rugged ocean scenery and abundant wildlife all contribute to the splendor that is Acadia National Park .  The heart and soul of Acadia is Mount Desert Island , a short drive from the airport.  The island is a place with scenic pink-granite mountains, deep glacial ponds, cobblestone beaches and ocean side cliffs. Bald eagles, ospreys and peregrine falcons patrol the skies while seals, porpoises and seabirds fish the cold waters of Frenchman Bay . Added to the hiking is a morning of sea kayaking, and of course, a lobster dinner!  We are going to experience Acadia in its entirety on our Acadia National Park hiking tour.

See our detailed itinerary here, or contact us for more information! Timberline Adventures offers guided hike and bike tours across the U.S. and Canada, and our experts across the country are ready to guide you in your outdoor experience.

Introduce Yourself To Maine With a Hike

To hike in Maine is to introduce yourself to our state, one step at a time. You breathe in the salt as you round a corner in Acadia National Park, or hoist yourself up a steep pitch on a mountain in western Maine. Everything is slow, deliberate and linked with the land.

In State & National Parks

There are great hikes throughout Maine, on federal lands like Acadia, in state parks such as Mt. Blue and along the East Coast’s longest walk, the Appalachian Trail.

Baxter State Park

With 215 miles of hiking trails and Maine’s tallest mountain (Katahdin), there is stunning foliage to witness in this wild wonderland. A choose-your-adventure-type place, there are options for easy day hikes in addition to the more adventurous route of summiting Katahdin. A short day hike option to consider is Horse Mountain. From the park's north gate, the Horse Mountain trailhead is 0.6 mile from the gatehouse. The trail is steep but within 1.2 miles, you will see a sign for a spur trail to the viewpoint where you will have a birds-eye view of Grand Lake Matagamon.

Camden Hills State Park

Sweeping views at this park atop Mt. Battie are made even more spectacular with the rich colors of fall foliage. A popular trail to enjoy the summit and see Camden Harbor is the Nature Trail and then left onto the Tablelands Trail to the top of Mt. Battie.

Acadia National Park

Numerous summits, easy day hikes and craggy coastlines make Maine’s “crown jewel of the North Atlantic coast” a gorgeous place to witness foliage on a hike. There are many hikes, ranging from easy walks to the very challenging Beehive – where at certain points, you climb the mountain using iron rungs.

Kids love hiking , and Maine has plenty of paths perfect for them. Some are strolls, and others are as tough and demanding as anything their parents might enjoy.

In the Mountains

Hiking Maine mountains adds an extra dimension. Katahdin is Maine’s tallest peak — and one of the hardest. But the state has plenty of others that are fun and easier on the feet and nerves. For an even greater challenge, try Maine’s many rock-climbing routes , which range from granite walls over the Atlantic to hidden granite stashes elsewhere in the state.

Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument provides over 87,000 acres of mountain and forestland for the serious hiker. There are many trails to enjoy like these in the south section of the monument, like Deasey Mountain – a challenging 10-mile hike where you get to ford a stream. Or head to the north section where there are reservable campsites and huts.

Maine Trail Finder provides a detailed list of Maine Hikes and hiking trails.

Learn About Our Private Trips

  • Shuttle: 90 min
  • Hiking Distance: 7.7 mi
  • Elevation Gain/loss: 500 ft

Our adventure begins with pickup from your hotel in Bangor, ME and a short drive to the visitors center in Acadia, where we will board the Island Explorer shuttle and enjoy a short but scenic ride to Sand Beach. We will begin our inaugural trek on rocky terrain descending toward the Great Head of Acadia. The views are unparalleled and provide sweeping panoramas of the Gulf of Maine and surrounding peaks. As we continue on, we will make our way through pink granite cliffs and Birch forests looping back to the trailhead. From here, we will head south along the coast toward Thunder Hole and Otter Cliff, one of the most stunning overlooks along the Atlantic. Your guide will prepare a tasty trail lunch as we pause to take in the breathtaking views and watch for marine wildlife.

After lunch we will embark on a last hike of the day to Jordan Pond. One of the most iconic hikes in the park, this glacially carved lake is surrounded by lush green mountains and is a perfect cap off to the day. We will enjoy a short drive to our lodging in Bar Harbor, get cleaned up and meet for a delicious, New England dinner.

  • Shuttle time: 30 Min
  • Hiking Distance: 4.3+ miles
  • Elevation Gain/Loss: 1885 ft

Today we embark on a summit hike to the top of one (and possibly two) of Acadia’s most iconic mountains, with sweeping vistas of coastal islands, Bar Harbor proper, spruce forests and dramatic granite cliffs. Today’s hike is surrounded by deep coastal forests and stunning panoramas of Acadia National Park. We will take as much time as we’d like on the summit as your guide prepares a picnic lunch. After lunch we will loop back to our starting point and – if time allows – visit one of Bar Harbor’s many museums or enjoy a beach walk along the coast.

  • Ferry: 45 Min
  • Shuttle: 50 min
  • Hiking Distance: 3.15+ mi
  • Elevation Gain/loss: 880 ft

Our hike today takes us to the exciting Schoodic Peninsula. We will enjoy a short ferry from Bar Harbor east across Winter Harbor to reach our destination. From here, we begin our hike from the coast up to Schoodic Head, providing many overlooks of the stunning surf along the Atlantic Coast, and a great view of Little Moose Island. We will stop to savor the view, have a tasty trail lunch and loop back, crossing over the “Anvil” and Blueberry Hill along the way. Post hike, we will hop back on the ferry, then make our way back to Bar Harbor, making a few more stops along the way at worthwhile viewpoints.

  • Shuttle: 1 hour
  • Hiking Distance: 3.35+ mi
  • Elevation Gain/loss: 1000ft

Today we will begin with a scenic shuttle toward Bass Harbor on the quieter southwest side of Mount Desert Island, stopping about halfway for a hike up to Beech Mountain. Our loop ascent starts out fairly level, then climbs quickly up the slopes of the peak for well-deserved views. After a snack we will zig-zag back down the other side of the mountain to our vehicle. Continuing on, we will make our way to Bass Harbor. During our visit here, we will take a walk along the coast and, if parking allows, explore a local lighthouse. After a packed full morning and early afternoon, we will have a last lunch together, and your Guide will transport you back to Bangor, ME for the conclusion of our tour.

Please Note : We always do everything in our power to follow the set itinerary, however it can change occasionally based on temporary access restrictions, weather, lodging/campground availability, guest ability/injury, natural events like fires and flooding, and other potential causes. Normal terms and conditions apply to trips with itinerary changes.

Amazing Trip

The Acadia Summits to Ocean trip was AMAZING. It was a great blend of hiking rugged terrain & beautiful views. The food prepared by our guide, Lindsey was AWESOME! Highly recommend this trip. If you are thinking about it...DO IT!

We planned a wonderful hiking experience with Wildland Trekking in Acadia National Park. Our base Hotel location was Bar Harbor Inn, in Maine which is picture perfect for a family summer vacation. Our 21 yr old boys were all in for an action packed vaca before senior year of college began the day after we returned home. The Wildland Trekking company takes you on hikes, plans the week, the dinners, light lunch and transportation as well as the tips and tricks to avoid the crowds each day to hike. An example is one Loop hike up high, I noticed we went right, while others went left to hike. Our come around the corner moment was shockingly beautiful with view and elevation, if you went the tourist way – there was no surprise! We were well paced and not rushed. I feel we saw it all, even thought the map will tell a different story. That said, we covered many locations in the park – lakes, mountains, beaches, rocks, and story filled moments to last a lifetime. The week was planned out well with long hikes, elevation hikes and degrees of difficulty (sorry to scare you here) which I never thought I could do. But I did. Our guide made us feel accomplished and great about our hiking adventures and how we did it. Like climbing a rock scramble 1700 ft to the top of Cadillac Mountain. I thought I could do anything that day. I will not give it away as to the hikes, but they are different, exciting, and cover all types of the area. You will be challenged, and it is unlike anything I have ever done. Did I mention, NO Bears. Relaxed and fun. The Bar harbor area is just a nice small town in Acadia. Touristy, for sure. But delicious food at the restaurants, great stores to look through ad buy clothing, trinkets and cool stuff – your in the national Park so great souvenirs. The Bar Harbor Inn is spectacular. Why – old world nice!! great beds, quiet, respectful, great gardens, good food, cookies at 4pm, fire and smores at 7pm. Nice people run it! The Gettys restaurant has good food and drink. If you need hiking shoes and clothing due to cool weather, it is all downtown. Great places to hang out too. We need to go back for many experiences missed due to time. We did take the ferry, they also have a big ship for sunsets, and whale watching. I highly recommend a guided tour. If you have never checked it out, look at Wildland Trekking across the USA for trips. By the way, we did Yellowstone with them. – Awesome.

More amazing than we expected.

This experience by far exceeded our expectations. acadia is beautiful, the hikes were both challenging and unforgettable, and it was the trip of a lifetime for our family of 4. Our boys were 21 at time of travel and said it was a vacation they will never forget.

Happiness Promise

There are hundreds of thousands of guides and tour operators around the world. Figuring out who to trust is stressful and hard.

That’s why we started 10Adventures Tours, we’re here to make it easy to find a great guide or tour operator. We handpick the best local guides and tour operators for 10Adventures, working to ensure you have great guides and a great trip.

We want to give our users peace of mind that you’ll have a great trip and offer a guarantee that we will work with you to make it right.

How does this work? Well, if you feel that something about your trip didn’t’ meet your expectations, let us know. We will then work to gather the details and figure out where things went wrong. If something indeed wasn’t as described, or went wrong with your trip, and the problem was within the control of either oursleves, the guide or the tour company, we will then work out a refund with you that’s proportional to the scale of the problem.

Obviously the best way to make a great trip is to tell your local guide or tour operator and give them the chance to fix the solution while you are on your trip. Most things can be solved by telling your guide when the issue develops. If that doesn’t solve it, then email us right away. Please don’t wait to voice your concerns until the trip is over, as it’s much harder to solve issues after the fact.

We work hard to make sure you have a great trip. If something isn’t right, please email  [email protected]  and we will get to work right away.

Acadia National Park Hiking Tour Details

Overview for acadia national park hiking tour.

Spend six days exploring New England’s beautiful Acadia National Park on this guided hiking tour. Your expert guides will take you on the best trails the park has to offer, from challenging mountain trails to scenic beaches along the coastline.

You’ll be amazed by the difference between the charming coastal town of Bar Harbor and the scenic granite mountains of Acadia. During this tour, you’ll be climbing Dorr, Cadillac, Penobscot, and Gorham Mountains. Then, take to the water for a sea kayaking where you’ll explore remote bays in protected coastal waters. After your daily adventures, you’ll be returning to Bar Harbor to enjoy the famous New England hospitality (and lobster rolls!). The Hiking Tour in Acadia National Park is unforgettable each step of the way.

Itinerary for Acadia National Park Hiking Tour

Arrive in acadia national park.

Meet the group early at the Bangor airport. You’ll have breakfast and then make the hour drive to Acadia National Park.

You’ll start your hike along a carriage road to Witch Hole Pond. In the afternoon you’ll be hiking the Sieur de Monts Springs area where you’ll discover mountain springs, plank bridges, and beautiful views. After the hike, you’ll check-in at the hotel in Bar Harbor.

Hike up Dorr Mountain

Start your day with a stroll through the harbor and a short walk along the Bar Harbor shore path. Then you’ll head back to the park and start your strenuous hike up Dorr Mountain. The scenery will be spectacular from the top, as well as on your descent as you walk through the gorge between Dorr and Cadillac.

Cadillac Mountain Hike

Your hike today will be up Cadillac Mountain. As you climb, the odds are good that you’ll see wildlife, especially the birds of prey that frequent Eagles Crag.

On the way back you’ll take a lunch break at Featherbed pond before returning to Bar Harbor.

Sea Kayaking Adventure

This may be a hiking tour of the mountains, but no trip to New England is complete without getting out on the water! Today you’ll go on a sea kayaking excursion. There is no experience required as you’ll receive instruction and will be kayaking on the protected western side of Acadia.

The areas of Blue Hill Bay or Western Bay are less busy and offer a great chance to paddle in a remote area that is away from the open ocean. In the afternoon you can explore charming Bar Harbor, relax at the hotel, or wander a trail on your own.

Penobscot Mountain Hiking

Your hike today will begin from Jordon Pond House where you’ll pick up the trail to climb Penobscot Mountain. The climb is steep and offers beautiful views of the Cranberry Isles, a smattering of islands in the deep blue sea.

Reward yourself with a snack at Jordon Pond House on your way back into town.

Climb the Beehive and Gorham Mountain

Your last day already! Take the trail from Sand Beach and start the challenging hike up the Beehive. The track gets so steep that certain points have iron rungs to help your ascent. The views from the top are fantastic, especially in the fall when the trees are deep red and golden.

After this thrilling climb, you’ll walk over Gorham Mountain, and then loop back to Sand Beach. You’ll have time for a final lunch by the sea before returning to Bangor.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

 claudia and donny.

My husband and I experienced a wonderful raft trip guided by Randy down the Green and Colorado Rivers. It was a family trip with varied ages and needs, including an eighty-year-old.  Randy was not only a highly effective people person, taking care of varied personal needs and issues, but he was a very experienced River navigator.  The water was very high that Spring, but Randy got both rafts past the challenges at the Confluence safely. The whole family treasures the experiences from our rafting trip!  He was also a great cook and dynamic storyteller around the campfire at night.  I recommend him highly as a guide and naturalist!

15 Best Hikes in Maine For Beautiful Views

Whether you're a novice or an experienced trekker, there's a hiking trail in Maine for you.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

maine hiking tour

It doesn't get much wilder than Maine — a state that's home to rocky shores, roaming moose, and the most difficult (and remote) segment of the Appalachian Trail. Here in the northeasternmost U.S. state, it's easy to find a hiking trail that gets you out into the woods and away from the flocks of tourists who tend to head to Maine's quaint coastal towns in search of picturesque lighthouses and the state's best lobster shacks.

Of course, it's Maine, so there are also plenty of beautiful hikes along the coastline — let's just say those flocks of tourists are coming here for a reason. It doesn't matter if you're a total newbie or a seasoned hiker, the Pine Tree State has a little dose of adventure that's suitable for everyone. Here's a look at some of the best hikes in Maine.

100-Mile Wilderness

Douglas Rissing / Getty Images

Long known as the most arduous section of the Appalachian Trail, the 100-Mile Wilderness gets its name from the approximate distance between the towns on either side of the segment. You'll want to prepare for an eight- to 10-day backpacking trip if you tackle this expedition, so think of this hike as something to work toward — not your first trek of the year. Those who take on the challenge are rewarded with access to some of Maine's most remote landscapes. The trail follows the slopes of wooded mountains and lake-speckled valleys, providing hikers with an authentic taste of the Maine Northwoods, complete with moose, lynxes, and loons.

Table Rock Trail

From Andover, Maine, you can hop on the scenic Table Rock Trail in Grafton Notch State Park , easily one of the best hikes in Maine. While the 2.1-mile loop is rated as hard due to some steep spots, you can customize your experience by picking trails that suit your level of experience. The trick is to travel counterclockwise and take the orange-marked trail up and the blue and white trails down. Along the way, you'll pass natural caves you can duck into.

Cadillac Mountain South Ridge Trail

Sure, you can drive up Cadillac Mountain, but why do that when you can take this moderately challenging 6.7-mile path to the top and back? The trail weaves through the woods, then ascends to open rocky ledges leading to the summit. Start your journey at the Blackwoods Campground , or pitch your tent there and have s'mores supplies waiting for your triumphant return.

Mount Kineo

Mount Kineo rises prominently out of Moosehead Lake, the largest lake in Maine. The mountain is connected to the mainland by a narrow road, but you'll start your hiking journey at the Rockwood boat launch for a boat trip to the trailhead. From land, brave the Indian Trail to the top and make your final ascent up the converted fire tower for outstanding views of the sprawling lake below.

Knife Edge Trail

Jerry Monkman / Aurora Photos / Getty Images

If you're a confident hiker, an excursion up Mount Katahdin , the tallest peak and one of the best hikes in Maine, is a must. To climb the 5,269-foot peak from Katahdin's western face, take the short but steep Knife Edge Trail from Pamola to Baxter Peak, the mountain's highest point. Note that the 1.1-mile scramble is only for the sure-footed, as the trail has steep drop-offs and plenty of loose rocks.

Angel Falls Trail

These ribbony, 90-foot falls are perhaps Maine's tallest, depending on who you ask — but it's hard to see how the braided silver cords could be anything but the most photogenic. The trailhead is located about 18 miles south of Oquossoc on an old railroad grade called Bemis Road. The hike is short — just a mile — but a bit steep, and requires a few stream crossings. The payoff, however, is sublime.

Fire Warden’s Trail

The nearly five-mile Fire Warden's Trail climbs (sometimes steeply) up Bigelow Mountain, a 4,000-footer with six separate peaks. Bigelow Preserve , where the trail is found, gets less attention (and less traffic) than larger spots like Baxter State Park and Acadia National Park , and as such, you shouldn't have too much company while passing through cool hardwood forests and rocky ridges on the way up.

Mount Battie Trail

This moderate 1.1-mile hike is located just outside Camden, Maine, making it the perfect addition to a morning spent on the waters of Penobscot Bay. The trail can see a lot of daily traffic, but the bird-watching is superb and you'll be able to see the Atlantic Ocean and Maine's offshore islands from the top.

Ocean Path Trail

Cynthia Farr-Weinfeld / Getty Images

Stretching 2.2 miles one-way from Sand Beach to the Otter Point Overlook, with a possible detour to Thunder Hole, the family-friendly and relatively flat Ocean Path Trail in Acadia National Park offers beautiful views of the eastern coastline and the Atlantic Ocean. Take your time on this popular hike, which takes about 1.5 hours round-trip and is a favorite among trail runners, walkers, and birding enthusiasts.

Great Head Trail

This hike, also located in Acadia National Park (and not far from the Ocean Path Trail mentioned above) traverses the Atlantic coast while staying within the park's boundaries. The 1.4-mile Great Head Trail leads hikers over granite rock, near hidden coves, and into lush forests with a start and end at Sand Beach. The loop is rated as moderate and makes a great addition to a day at the beach or an afternoon spent exploring the wonders of Acadia.

Gulf Hagas Rim Trail and Pleasant River Tote

Chris Bennett / Getty Images

For a longer hike, head to Beaver Cove and take on the Gulf Hagas Rim Trail, an 8.6-mile loop offering views of “The Grand Canyon of Maine.” If the water is high — it usually is in the spring — leave your car at the Head of the Gulf Parking Area. From this side, there's a bridge over the river, which can't be said of the trail's other starting point, Gulf Hagas Parking Area. From that end, you'll have to cross the river by foot, with water that’s often up to your knees. Along the way, you’ll pass several waterfalls as you hike through remote forests (there's no cell service, so bring a good map and trusty compass, just in case) and take in views of the mountain vistas around you.

Burnt Meadow Mountain and Twin Brook Trails

This challenging 3.4-mile loop just outside Brownfield is one of the best hikes in Maine, with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and a trail that meanders through both ancient forests and stark Alpine landscapes. Start by taking the trail designated with blue markers up to the summit, then complete the loop by taking the Twin Brooks Trail, marked with yellow markers, back to your car. Doing it this way can take up to four hours, but the impressive views and pleasant walk through the woods are well worth the effort.

Borestone Mountain Trail

Cavan Images / Getty Images

The Borestone Mountain Trail , located about 90 minutes north of Bangor in Guilford, gives you two options: you can stick to the original loop, which sends you on a scenic hike through the woods and then returns you to the parking area via a road, or you can make it more challenging by going back the way you came. Either way, you’ll encounter forest views, steep sections near the summit, and a memorable adventure on this bird-filled 3.5-mile hike through the Borestone Mountain Audubon Sanctuary , located in scenic Maine's 100-Mile Wilderness region (mentioned above).

Moxie Falls Trail

With a drop of roughly 90 feet, Moxie Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in Maine. This moderate two-mile out-and-back hike starts by taking you on a flat walk through the woods before leading you up a slightly steeper section to a series of wooden boardwalks and steps that allow you to reach various overlook points. Take your time checking out the views of the impressive falls from each of the lookout areas before retracing your steps.

Tumbledown Mountain

Tennyson Tappan / Getty Images

This 5.3-mile loop trail just outside Byron is more challenging thank you’d think — it starts off with a vigorous 1.5-mile climb up the Loop Trail, where you’re rewarded with stunning views of the western mountains, before leading you downhill a bit to scenic Tumbledown Pond for yet more Insta-worthy views. As you follow the two connecting routes (Tumbledown Ridge Trail and Brook Trail) back to Byron Road, keep an eye out for local wildlife such as red squirrels or endangered peregrine falcons, which have nesting sites here, as well as flora like spruce, red maple, and yellow birch trees.

A woman hikes along the cliff edge in Maines Acadia National Park, Maine

From strenuous routes for experienced trekkers to moderate clambers through national parks, here are Maine's best hiking trails © Chris Bennett / Getty Images

There’s more to Maine  than lobsters and Stephen King novels. It’s also home to some of the best hiking in the northeast US, with thousands of miles of trails.

But choosing the best hiking routes in Maine is no easy feat. For the adventurous explorer, there are plenty of backcountry multi-day hikes and for the beginners who just want to see the beautiful coastline, the Pine Tree State has you covered.

From coastal treks with epic views of lighthouses perched over rocky saltwater-drenched ledges to strenuous bucket list hikes in the state's legendary wilderness, lace up your hiking boots and discover why Maine is called Vacationland.

1. Beehive Trail, Acadia National Park

Best for a unique hiking experience  1.5 miles, 2–3 hours, strenuous

Acadia National Park offers no shortage of incredible mountain peaks to climb for breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and Maine’s rocky coastline. The  Beehive Trail is one of the most unique trails in Acadia National Park and much of the trail requires climbing up iron rung ladders bolted to the granite.

The trailhead begins on a gradual path through the forest until you come to a trail marker. You’ll begin to climb some granite stairs, over iron bridges and finally up a series of iron rung ladders over boulders. Once you reach the summit at 520ft, you’re rewarded with stunning views of Sand Beach . You’ll descend the Bowl Trail where you can cool down in the Bowl, an alpine pond between Beehive and Gorham Mountain.

2. Mount Katahdin, Baxter State Park

Best for experienced hikers    5.2 miles, 8–12 hours, very strenuous

Named the “Greatest Mountain” by the Penobscot, Mt Katahdin is located in the heart of  Baxter State Park . Standing at 5269ft, this is both Maine’s tallest peak and the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. Hiking Mt Katahdin takes approximately 8 to 12 hours and is a very strenuous hike.

The 5.2-mile Hunt Trail is one of the most popular trails to reach Baxter Peak as it offers picturesque views of Maine’s foothills and Katahdin Stream Falls. For well-prepared, experienced hikers, the famous 1.1-mile transverse of Knife Edge will test your fear of heights, but you’ll earn bragging rights with the locals.

Woman smiling as she jumps into water with a waterfall thundering in the background and a man laughing as he watches her plunge

3. Gulf Hagas, Brownville

Best hike for going for a swim 8.2 miles, 5–6 hours, moderate

Nicknamed the “Grand Canyon of the East,”  Gulf Hagas on the West Branch of the Pleasant River is a three-mile-long rock canyon that towers 500ft above the bubbling river. Gulf Hagas can be accessed through the Katahdin Iron Works Road in Brownville as part of the Appalachian Trail corridor in central Maine.

Shortly after the parking area, you’ll need to ford the river. The water levels vary widely depending on the season and rainfall. From here, you’ll walk along the Appalachian Trail through 150-year-old white pines in the Hermitage before connecting to the Gulf Hagas loop. At the next trail intersection, choose the Rim Trail, so you’re facing the numerous waterfalls as you ascend the loop trail. On a hot summer's day there are plenty of opportunities to go for a swim in the cool water.

4. Mt Battie, Camden Hills State Park

Best for the family   1.1 miles, 1–2 hours, moderate

Mt Battie, in  Camden Hills State Park , is one of Maine’s most iconic hikes. The 1.1-mile trail is short and steep and requires some scrambling but is doable for people of all ages. Standing at 780ft, the summit of Mt Battie features stunning views of the town of Camden and Penobscot Bay. Climb the stone tower for even better views and selfies.

5. Fairy Head Loop, Cutler Coast Public Reserved Land

Best for nature enthusiasts   10.4 miles, 7–8 hours, difficult

Overlooking the Bay of Fundy, Cutler Coast Public Reserved Land comprises over 12,334 acres of wilderness in Downeast Maine. Known as the  Bold Coast , the nature preserve is a unique place to experience a variety of Maine’s coastal ecosystems. Bring your camera as you don’t want to miss the sunrise over the rocky coastline.

The Fairy Head Loop is a 10.4-mile loop trail that provides almost four miles of shorefront hiking before running inland through meadows, forests and grass marshes. Wildlife is abundant, and there are a few camping spots available on a first-come, first-served basis.

A man stands with his small dog at the summit of a mountain looking out at the view of a distant lake

6. Tumbledown Mountain, Weld

Best hike for joining the crowd    3.7 miles, 3–4 hours, moderate

Nestled among the forested peaks in the western mountains of Maine,  Tumbledown Mountain in Weld is one of Maine’s most popular day hikes. This isn't the highest peak in the area or the peak with the best views, but it does have a couple of real showstoppers – the alpine pond situated at 2800ft and the 700ft granite cliffs on the south face overlooking the pond.

The easiest and most direct trail to the pond is the Brook Trail, which features a 1600ft elevation gain. Tumbledown Ridge Trail transverses towards the East Peak and descends a saddle until it climbs to the summit of West Peak.

The Loop Trail is the most difficult and recommended for experienced hikers as it's very steep in sections, and you’ll need to climb up metal rungs through boulders to reach the summit. Bring your swimsuit and a picnic, and enjoy the peace from the granite summit.

7. 100-Mile Wilderness, Central Maine

Best for experienced multi-day hikers  100 miles, 5–10 days, strenuous

Spanning 100 miles from the small central Maine town of Monson to the southern border of Baxter State Park, the 100-Mile Wilderness is often called the “wildest section” of the Appalachian Trail as it’s both challenging to navigate and to traverse. Best to hike late June through July, the 100-Mile Wilderness is a true bucket-list hike for experienced and adventurous hikers.

You’ll need to pack everything you need and you should expect to be trekking for 8 to 12 hours a day. Throughout the 100 miles, you’ll climb almost 15,000ft. While the hike can be grueling, it is an incredible opportunity to experience Maine’s wilderness and wildlife. Keep your eyes open for moose.

Sunset from the Appalachian Trail, Bigelow Mountain, Maine

8. Bigelow Mountain, Bigelow Preserve

Best for elite hikers  16.3 miles, 8–10 hours, strenuous

Head off the beaten path and experience one of Backpacker Magazine’s hardest day hikes in America with the  Bigelow Mountain Traverse . The 16.3-mile traverse of the Bigelow Mountain Range via the Appalachian Trail offers some of the most incredible views of Maine’s western mountains and nearby Flagstaff Lake.

The quad-burning hike is a point-to-point hike, so you’ll need to plan accordingly with cars at two points. The ascent of Little Bigelow begins gradually before turning steeper until you reach the summit of Little Bigelow. From here, the next 6.4 miles are grueling ascends and descends along Bigelow Mountain to Avery Peak at 4088ft. There are more ups and downs until the end. If you’d like to turn the day hike into a weekend hike, there are plenty of tent platforms just below Avery Peak in Bigelow Col.

9. Southwest Ridge Trail, Pleasant Mountain

Best for stunning views  5.8 miles, 3–4 hours, moderate

Just an hour’s drive from Portland , Pleasant Mountain is southern Maine’s tallest mountain standing at 2006ft. Managed by  Loon Echo Land Trust , Pleasant Mountain is home to six trails covering over 10 miles. The views of the open summit are abundant, and if you’re lucky, you may be able to spot Mt Washington in New Hampshire.

The 3.6-mile Ledges Trail is the most popular and direct trail to the summit, but on a beautiful summer's day, it will be packed with fellow hikers. If you prefer the solitude of nature, the 5.8-mile roundtrip Southwest Ridge Trail is a great choice. Pack a picnic lunch and relax on the granite ledges of the summit.

10. Cadillac Mountain, Acadia National Park

Best for watching the sunrise  2.2 miles, 2–4 hours, moderate

Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park is one of the first points in the US to see the sunrise. While most people drive to the summit,  the hike is relatively easy compared to other hikes on Mount Desert Island. The open granite peak of Cadillac Mountain offers almost panoramic views of Bar Harbor, Mount Desert Island and the Atlantic Ocean.

The best time to hike here is in the middle of the night so that you are at the summit and ready to see the sunrise over America. Grab a headlamp and head out along the 2.2-mile Cadillac Mountain North Ridge Trail to the 1528-ft summit under the stars. Don’t forget your flask of coffee!

Katahdin is an Abenaki word meaning “Great Mountain”, and great it is! Katahdin is the centerpiece of Baxter State Park and the highest peak in Maine, rising to nearly one mile above sea level.

Great Mountain Guide Service welcomes guests of all ages and skill levels, and we take pride in our ability to provide a safe and educational hiking experience. Since 2015 we have seen guests from the local area and from far and wide, all over the world.

The key to a successful and rewarding Katahdin hike is planning and preparation. We remove the guesswork so you can relax and enjoy your Mt. Katahdin ascent.

In addition to Mt. Katahdin, the surrounding mountainous region, Baxter State Park, and the Penobscot River corridor offer numerous options for day and overnight hiking adventures!

Planning a Katahdin Ascent

We Take the Guesswork Out of Planning

Each spring GMGS reserves Baxter State Park parking passes required to access the “trailhead” options to summit Katahdin. This guarantees us a parking pass for the planned dates. In April, we list our secured Katahdin Ascent dates below and post them to our social media accounts.

*If our secured Katahdin Ascent dates are not your desired day to hike we are happy to procure the passes and design a custom trip for you! Contact Us for details.

Welcoming all Skill Levels

Hikes for Everyone

There are what seems to be an endless number and combination of trails and options to reach Katahdin’s summit.

For beginners and children under the age of 15 (exceptions may be made) we suggest hiking to the well-known Chimney Pond via the Chimney Pond Trail . From Chimney Pond there are numerous options for all abilities to reach the summit.

For the more experienced, Helon Taylor Trail , a 4 mile long steep and more demanding trail, brings you to the summit of Pamola Peak (Elev. 4919′). If the famed Knife Edge is part of your desired Katahdin Ascent, from Pamola Peak we tackle “the chimney” a very steep section of Knife Edge before summiting South Peak and finally Baxter Peak (Elev. 5,268′).

Another popular option is the Hunt Trail , part of the Appalachian Corridor and either the very start or very end of a thru-hikers journey. Accessed via Abol Campground , Abol Tail and Katahdin Stream Campground the Hunt Trail is approx. 5 miles (one way ) to Baxter Peak .

We guarantee our guests a parking spot by pre-ordering the parking pass prior to the ascent date. *WE HIKE RAIN OR SHINE* .  We prepare our guests to take on “ANY WEATHER” with a “GEAR/PACKING LIST”. “ANY WEATHER” is weather that your guide deems safe and passable. Our guides and staff reserve the right to stop a trip or turn a group around in inclement weather – extreme cold, wind, rain or lightning.

Hikers must expect to spend several hours walking and climbing, outdoors and in the elements. Being prepared with the right gear and resources is important to safely realize your dreams of ascending Mount Katahdin. The best advice we can give our clients and friends is “ATTITUDE is EVERYTHING” – you don’t have to be the hikiest hiker to ever hike, you just need a good ATTITUDE! United States Hiking Trips

Maine's mountains and coast.

After over 30 years of guiding hiking and walking trips in some of Europe’s most beautiful areas, we are turning to our own backyard of Maine to explore its most charming landscapes and unspoiled stretches of wilderness. The western mountains and coastal regions offer two distinctly different, yet uniquely Maine, experiences.   Maine's Western Mountain region is five million acres of amazingly rich, diverse, and essential ecosystems. A region of old-growth forests, high Appalachian peaks, glimmering secluded lakes, and ancient Native American waterways, western Maine’s unique variety of habitats supports a phenomenal array of wildlife, including the state’s iconic moose, marten, loon, and the elusive lynx.    With over 5,000 miles of bold granite coastline, much of Maine’s identity is inextricably connected to the sea and seafaring. Windjammers, lighthouses, and quiet harborside villages remain timeless coastal fixtures. Nestled between the mountains and the sea, coastal towns with vibrant cultures of arts, craft breweries, and creative cuisine have only added to the allure.    The best way to experience Maine is to get out, walk its trails, sail its waters, breathe its mountain air, feel its salt breezes, and end the day in the welcoming comfort of a coastal inn or mountain lodge.

maine hiking tour

This story was originally published in April 2015.

You don’t always have to huff and puff for miles to reach a great view from the top of a mountain. In Maine, there are plenty of short hikes up small mountains and hills to vistas that may take you by surprise.

There are all sorts of reasons you might be drawn to these shorter mountain hikes. Maybe you’re trying to introduce a kid to hiking. Maybe you’re just a beginner hiker yourself. Or maybe, for whatever reason, you just aren’t cut out for the big mountains anymore. Whatever your reason for hiking small mountains — and believe me, you don’t actually need a reason — here are a few Maine trails you might enjoy:

Pigeon Hill

maine hiking tour

At 317 feet above sea level, the summit of Pigeon Hill is one of the high points along the coast of Washington County. Located near the coast in Steuben, the hill is home to a 1.2-mile trail network maintained by the Downeast Coastal Conservancy. The trails lead to the top of the hill, which — with its bare bedrock and low-lying bushes — resembles the top of much taller mountains in Acadia National Park. On a clean day, hikers can see all the way to Petit Manan Light from the top of Pigeon Hill.

Flying Mountain

maine hiking tour

One of the lowest peaks in Acadia National Park, Flying Mountain still offers some great views of the Mount Desert Island and ocean. You can reach its summit, 284 feet above sea level, with a 0.6-mile out-and-back hike or 1.4-mile loop hike. Much of the trail to the top is gravel and log steps, but just before reaching the peak, you’ll travel over exposed ledges with great views of Somes Sound, Southwest Harbor, Northeast Harbor and islands to the north, including the Cranberries. The summit is marked with a wooden summit sign in a pile of rocks.

Mount Phillip

maine hiking tour

Located in the small town of Rome in central Maine, Mount Phillip rises 755 feet above sea level. The trail on the mountain is a 1.3-mile loop and is maintained by the Belgrade Regional Alliance. Hiked in either direction, the loop trail climbs the mountain gradually through a forest of maple, birch, oak, white pine and hemlocks to ledges near the summit that offer good views of Great Pond and the Kennebec Highlands.

maine hiking tour

Located on a 295-acre preserve in Rockport, Beech Hill is covered with wild blueberries and is one of the official stops of the Maine Birding Trail, with more than 125 species on its checklist. A 0.75-mile trail leads gradually to the hill’s top and a historic stone building called Beech Nut. Beech Hill is the only bald hilltop in the area and offers views of Penobscot Bay, the Camden Hills and Saint George Peninsula.

maine hiking tour

Not far from eastern Maine blueberry fields, Baker Hill rises a few hundred feet above sea level in the coastal town of Sullivan. The trails on the hill lead through a mossy forest filled with boulder to outlooks near the top. The trails are short — less than 0.5 mile long each — and travel over a few steep areas. The Frenchman Bay Conservancy maintains these trails, as well as a network of trails in the neighboring Long Ledges Preserve.

Bradbury Mountain

maine hiking tour

At nearly 500 feet above sea level, the top of Bradbury Mountain is one of the top destinations in Bradbury Mountain State Park in Freeport. It’s a quick hike; from the parking lot, it’s just 0.3 mile by trail to the top of the mountain, which offers a great view of the region and is a place frequented by bird watchers and picnickers. If looking for a longer hike, the park is home to a vast trail network, and all of the trails are marked with different color blazes to make navigation easier.

John B. Mountain

maine hiking tour

This mountain in Brooksville reaches just 250 feet above sea level, but ledges near its top offer great views of the area. The interconnecting trails on the property, maintained by the Blue Hill Heritage Trust, total about 1 mile. The trail that leads to the summit is steep in some places.

Newman Hill

maine hiking tour

This hill is located on conservation land owned and maintained by the Orono Land Trust. The property is one of several conservation lands that makes up the Caribou Bog Conservation Area in Orono. A 2-mile loop hike leads to the top of the hill, which is rocky and provides a view of Pushaw Lake. The trail travels through a variety of terrain, including open fields, along ponds and through stands of oak and pine.

Haystack Mountain

maine hiking tour

Rising just over 800 feet above sea level, Haystack Mountain in Liberty has long been a favorite hiking destination for people in the area. Blueberry fields at the top of the mountain offer wide open views of the surrounding forests, farmland and distant hills. The loop trail leading to the mountain’s top is only about 1 mile in length. Footing can be tricky in some areas of the trail because of exposed tree roots and rocks. The slope is fairly steep in a few areas.

Blue Hill Mountain

maine hiking tour

The most difficult hike on this list, Blue Hill Mountain has long been a hiking destination for families. Located in the town of Blue Hill, this mountain rises 934 feet above sea level; its bald summit provides open views of the region. The 1.75-mile Becton Trail, which opened summer of 2013, gradually climbs to the top of the mountain. The shorter Hayes and Osgood trails also climb to the summit. These trails are older and steeper than the Becton Trail.

Mount Battie

maine hiking tour

Rising about 800 feet above sea level in Camden Hills State Park, Mount Battie offers one of the most beautiful views of the Maine coast. At the summit stands a stone tower that was dedicated in 1921 by the Mount Battie Association as an enduring memorial to the men and women of Camden who served in World War I. Pulitzer Prize winner Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950), born in Rockland, often wrote poetry while sitting on the summit. You can climb the mountain on a moderately challenging hiking trail, 0.5 miles up the mountain’s south side, or you can actually reach the top of the mountain by vehicle via Mount Battie Road. Or you can park at the bottom of the hill on Mount Battie Road and hike up the 1.5-mile Tablelands Trail, which reconnects with Mount Battie Road just before the summit.

Where to stay: Check in to the award-winning historic boutique hotel The Press Hotel , which flawlessly blends the old with the new. What was once the home of the Portland Press Herald has been converted into modern accommodations with nods to the past (think: typewriters, newspaper print accents and more). Settle in with your sweetheart for a game of Scrabble, admire the art gallery that features local artists' work or stay in bed for snuggles with the cozy Cuddledown comforters. Recent guests appreciate the location, fun decor and friendly staff members, but they warn not to get a room on the same side as the fire station since the sirens can keep you up.

Dockside Guest Quarters: York

Couples who sneak away for a romantic escape at the Dockside Guest Quarters are in for a treat. The waterfront bed-and-breakfast has beautiful views of the York Harbor, a restaurant serving traditional Maine fare, friendly service and unpretentious amenities. The property has five buildings that offer a variety of accommodations, with amenities like private decks, cozy fireplaces, kitchenettes, living rooms, private entrances, water views, dining areas, and washers and dryers. Recent travelers loved this property, praising the porches and views.

Enhance your stay with add-ons such as artisanal chocolates, a dozen roses or bath products to take home. For some on-site fun, duos can take advantage of an array of lawn games, a marina with tours just for inn guests, bikes to borrow or boats to rent. Other activities in the area include historical sites, beautiful beaches and interesting museums.

Samoset Resort: Rockport

Lovebirds visiting the Samoset Resort will be treated to thoughtfully designed guest rooms and suites with private balconies and terraces that offer stunning views of Penobscot Bay. At the resort, guests say visitors can expect warm, intuitive service and elegant accommodations. Couples in particular can enjoy oceanfront dining, book a pampering treatment in the spa, play a round of golf together on the 18-hole championship golf course and relax in the zero-entry pool.

When it comes to accommodations, book a nautically inspired oceanfront guest room with a king-sized bed or two queen-sized beds, or a more spacious one-bedroom suite that comes with a private balcony with a hot tub (a favorite feature of recent lodgers), ocean views and spacious sitting area. For a longer stay with even more amenities, one- or two-bedroom condos are available with kitchens, dining areas, private balconies and jetted tubs.

Share laughs and friendly competition with your special someone over a game of disc golf, tennis, shuffleboard, pickleball, badminton, croquet or horseshoes. Or, celebrate a special occasion over an award-winning meal made with seasonal ingredients while taking in the beautiful surroundings. During the winter months, couples should have a cocktail at the Instagram-worthy outdoor Glacier Ice Bar where everything is made of ice – including the bar, barstools, chairs and drink glasses.

Buildings lining a street at night in Ogunquit, a seaside resort town in York County, Maine.

For a dreamy coastal Maine getaway, Ogunquit offers world-class dining and resort experiences with sandy beaches, dramatic rocky cliffs and a charming harborside town. Ogunquit means "beautiful place by the sea" in the Indigenous Abenaki language, and its name holds true to its translation. Smell the fresh, salty air as you put your arm around your partner during a coastal cliff walk or wander around the quaint shops, restaurants and galleries of the maritime town. You can also enjoy a romantic dinner at M.C. Perkins Cove in a dimly lit dining room with seaside views.

Explore the town by diving into the history of the area at the Ogunquit Heritage Museum, seeing a live performance at the S. Judson Dunaway Center or taking home a one-of-a-kind piece of art from the Abacus Gallery. Extend your stay with a night at The Beachmere Inn or the Meadowmere Resort, both of which offer the opportunity to cozy up, relax and enjoy some much-needed time alone with the one you love.

Boats in Boothbay Harbor in Lincoln County, Maine. Boothbay Harbor region is a popular yachting and tourist destination.

As with many coastal Maine regions, Boothbay Harbor is a prime location for kayaking, sailing and yachting; it's also home to quaint shops, seafood eateries and historical museums. Rekindle the flame at one of the many inns, hotels, vacation rentals or even campgrounds. Available as a weekly rental in the summer or for shorter time periods other parts of the year, Seanook Cottage features a private dock and four decks in East Boothbay.

Dining in the area ranges from convenience stores and ice cream shops to fine dining and lobster bakes. The Tinnery restaurant, which sits on the site of Boothbay Harbor's old canning district, elevates casual "tinned" food (like sardines) using fresh local ingredients. You'll also find cheese and chocolate fondues on the menu. For romantic escapades in the area, there's no shortage of things to do on the land or water.

Explore the area by bike or boat, walk along the Boothbay Harbor Sculpture Trail, take a ferry to see puffins and seals, follow the historic walking tour throughout Boothbay Harbor, or ride an authentic steam locomotive. If you're visiting during the winter, grab a ticket to see the beautiful Christmas lights display at the nearby Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens.

Stunning Northeast Road Trips to Take with the Kids

T he Northeast United States is ideal for a family road trip. In Maine, enjoy lobsters and hiking in Acadia National Park. Vermont and New Hampshire have great classic New England scenery year round, and Massachusetts features Cape Cod beaches and Boston’s historic streets of Boston in Massachusetts. Explore small towns in Connecticut along with the picture perfect Yale Campus. And New York state (NOT the city, has several routes worth exploring. The Jersey Shore of New Jersey has ore prime beaches. Our top SheBuysTravel northeast road trip itineraries will help you plan your vacation.

Northeast Road Trips for Everyone

My road-tripping days began in my childhood. Joining the 1970s trend of customizing your own van, my dad outfitted a cargo van with shag carpet and bean bag chairs. Yes, it sounds tacky, but that old van took us from coast to coast. Along the way we made memories to last a lifetime. I continued the road trip tradition with my children–always taking the scenic route. These days my road trip companions include my grandkids and my husband. In recent years many of our road trip itineraries include the scenic byways of the Northeast.

Variety reigns in this corner of the country. Explore coastal roadways from Maine to Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut. Or venture into the White Mountains of New Hampshire, the Green Mountains of Vermont or New York State ’s Adirondack Mountains. Experience the bounty of the Hudson Valley and New York’s Finger Lakes region. Then, drive all the way to Canada’s border to marvel at the majesty of Niagara Falls. Choose your favorite trip ideas, load up your vehicle and hit the road!

Maine: A World of Coastal Treasures

Perched at the far northeastern corner of the USA, a Maine road trip promises an array of coastal treasures. Starting in Cape Elizabeth , the iconic Portland Headlight stands watch over Casco Bay as it has since 1791. Take the kids for a climb to the top to survey the surrounding views of the bay and the Atlantic coast. As you make your way north from Portland , searching for lighthouses becomes the road trip game of the day.

Along the way, stop by one of the many lobster stands to indulge in a delicious New England classic–the lobster roll. Follow that with a slice of blueberry pie to complete the Maine meal.

More to Love in Maine

Continue north for 170 miles to reach Acadia National Park. This National Park encompasses more than 48,000 acres on Mount Desert Island, the Schoodic Peninsula, Isle Au Haut and many smaller coastal islands. More than 10,000 of those acres lie within the boundary of Bar Harbor making it an excellent base for exploring local outdoor adventures.

Early risers trek up Cadillac Mountain to catch the first sunrise in the USA. Preferring to sleep a bit later, we chose to linger at the mountain’s summit for a stunning sunset. Enjoy a scenic drive around the historic 27-mile Mount Desert Island park loop road for access to the shoreline and interior forests.

As for Bar Harbor, it’s the place to jump aboard Lulu’s Lobster Boat . This Downeast-style lobster boat provides a unique tour with demos of how lobster traps are hauled. Bringing guests up close to private islands along the way, it’s easy to spot marine wildlife including seals.

Have adventurous kids? Schedule a family rock climbing lesson with Atlantic Climbing School . With lessons tailored to your group’s experience, fitness level and interest, it’s an unforgettable way to top off an epic East Coast road trip.

Choose New Hampshire for an Autumn Road Trip

With vibrant shades of orange, deep reds and buttercup yellows, fall makes road trips even more enticing. Often regarded as one of the best places in the world to surround yourself with fall foliage, New Hampshire’s Route 112 spans east from Lincoln to Conway. Known as the Kancamagus Highway, this 34.5-mile drive enjoys recognition as a National Scenic Byway. Winding through the heart of the White Mountain National Forest, gorgeous vistas unfold.

Known as “The Kanc” to the locals, you’ll discover abundant hiking trails for leg-stretching breaks. Hairpin turns add to the adventure as you climb further into the White Mountains passing natural wonders along the way. Reaching 2,855 feet at its highest point, the Kancamagus Highway parallels the Swift River as you descend.

For more mountainous thrills, consider extending your road trip north from Conway to the Mount Washington Cog Railway. Climbing 6,288 feet to the highest summit on the East Coast, it’s an adventure the kids (and you) won’t ever forget.

Vermont: A World of Cows, Cheese and Ice Cream

It seems every road in Vermont is postcard-worthy. Crossing over Lake Champlain from New York to Vermont, the landscape winds through quaint small towns showcasing white-steepled churches and historic storefronts. In the countryside, expansive rolling hills dotted with black and white Holstein cattle come into view. These special cows are the reason for all of that delicious Vermont cheddar cheese. They’re also responsible for ice cream. And, a detour to visit the Ben & Jerry’s factory in Waterbury is a must.

Ben & Jerry’s offers tours and tastings, beginning with the Cow over the Moon Theater,a bird’s eye view of the production line, and Ben & Jerry’s story. Then it’s off to the Flavoroom to taste the Flavor of the Day. Finally, don’t leave without paying your respects to the ice cream flavors resting peacefully in the Flavor Graveyard.

Boston, the Cape and Rhode Island: New England Charm

For the ultimate historic sites , Boston is the place to go. Here, the Freedom Trail chronicles New England history and the ride of Paul Revere. Rather than walk the trail like everyone else, turn the city into your gameboard with an interactive walking tour of the city curated by Urban Adventure Quests. Using a smartphone and clues provided for your team, the secrets of the city are revealed.

Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard

Even if you’ve never visited New England, you’re familiar with Cape Cod’s geography. It’s America’s bent arm, extending out into the Atlantic. Spend a few days here for fun in the sun. The west side of the Cape features shallow bay beaches toddlers will love. Got older kids? You can’t beat the eastern Cape’s Atlantic surf found at Nauset Light and Coast Guard beaches .

Start your Cape sightseeing at the lighthouse on the tip in Provincetown, affectionately referred to as P-town. Do the factory tour (when they resume, post-Covid) at Cape Cod Potato Chips . Like Corning, NY, Sandwich is known for its glassmaking, so include a tour of its museum. Then venture over to the Heritage Museum and Gardens . There are flowers, antique cars and a 1908 Loof carousel.

Got more time? Take a ferry to Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard. You’ll find more beaches, chowder and charming New England coastal cottages.

Rhode Island’s Mansions

Leaving Boston behind, rocky coastlines, sailboats and lighthouses take over for your New England road trip into Rhode Island and Connecticut. Choose parkways and coastal routes instead of interstates to keep things interesting.

Marvel at the mansions in Newport as you make your way along the idyllic coast. Stops you don’t want to miss include the Adventureland Family Fun Park in Narragansett, Rhode Island. Providing a welcome break from the road, this entertaining amusement park includes bumper boats, batting cages, gas-powered go-karts and an 18-hole nautical-themed miniature golf course.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Adventureland Family Fun Park opens seasonally from May through September.

Explore the Connecticut Coast

Hug the Connecticut coast on a road trip that takes you from NYC to Mystic, an historic New England whaling port. You’ll drive I-95 on this journey. It’s a commuter artery so you’ll want to avoid weekday drive times.

Pass through Greenwich , a tony CT suburb. Continue to Stamford , a growing city of 140,000. Want some garden inspo? Stop at the Bartlett Arboretum and Gardens , a lush 93-acres, that’s kid- and dog-friendly.

Continue to New Haven, home of two CT institutions: Yale University and Frank Pepe’s. I’m sure you’ve heard of Yale. The Ivy League campus is postcard pretty; follow this self-guided walk tour to see the highlights. The bookstore, located at the Shops at Yale, carries all the merch for aspiring high schoolers.

Whether you’re hungry or not, your next stop must be legendary Frank Pepe’ s on Wooster Street. This main location opened in 1937 and is a mecca for pizza lovers. If you time your visit for late summer, you must order the Fresh Tomato and Mozzarella pie. It’s as close to a farm to table experience you’ll ever have at a pizzeria.

If you’ve worked up a sweat eating your face off, take a dip at one of the Connecticut Sound beaches. My favorite is Hammonasset Beach State Park . It’s particularly lovely in the late afternoon as the sun starts to dip to the west. Don’t expect Jersey-style waves, but toddlers will be happy as clams splashing about in the gentle waters.

Speaking of clams, they may not be happy but they are delicious at Lenny and Joe’s Fish Tale in nearby Madison. The place is busy, but it’s a well-ordered chaos. Queue up best as you can, place your order, grab an indoor or outdoor seat and wait while you drool watching everyone else get their food.

This road trip ends at the Mystic Seaport, a showcase for the region’s maritime history. Recreating a 19th-century shipbuilding village, this open-air museum includes more than 30 period buildings populated with hands-on exhibits. The country’s last remaining whaleship, the Charles W. Morgan, resides here inviting the kids to earn their sea legs by hoisting the sails.

Want another slice? Mystic Pizza may seem familiar to anyone who saw the Julia Roberts movie of the same name in the 1980s. While the 80s big hair trend is (thankfully) gone, the pizza is still here—and it’s really good! Stop in for a “little slice of heaven” and to catch the continuous loop of the movie on the restaurant’s TV screens.

New Jersey: Gotta Go to the Shore!

Start your exploration of the Jersey Shore in the first beach you hit when heading south out of New York City – Sandy Hook . There are multiple beaches, a lovely bike trail and history – it was a military installation in its former life and the base housing and some cannons are still there.

Then scoot down to Asbury Park. It’s in the midst of a renaissance, with new hotels and buzzy restaurants. If you’re a Springsteen fan, don’t skip a selfie in front of the legendary shore bar, the Stone Pony, where his career was born.

Need some boardwalk action? Then The Wildwoods are for you. Multiple communities share some variation of “Wildwood” in their names and are linked by nearly 40 blocks of boardwalk amusements. Prove your skeet ball dominance, ride a coaster, body surf and travel back in time at the Doo Wop Museum .

If gambling’s your thing, stop in Atlantic City to check out the casinos. Then end your Jersey Shore road trip in Cape May , home to gorgeous Victorian homes and a much slower pace.

Not a beach fan? Check out two of Jersey’s theme parks: the classic Six Flags Great Adventure and the new American Dream .

New York: Waterfalls, Rivers and More

Exploring New York City is always fun but driving in NYC is another story. And parking? Forget it, unless you’re ready to part with a significant portion of your vacation funds. If your road trip begins in New York, spend a couple of days in the city using public transportation. Then pick up a rental car and head north starting with the Hudson Valley.

Hudson River Valley

Stretching 150 miles from the tip of Manhattan to Albany, the Hudson Valley’s vast and varied landscapes present a multitude of experiences. Walk or bike across the Hudson River in Poughkeepsie via the Walkway Over the Hudson . The 212-foot-tall, 1.28-mile linear walkway spans the river and connects to bike trails on either end.

For another fun hike, check out Fannie Reese State Park . Access the entrance near the walkway via a short walk along the road and down the stairs at the entrance to the Mid-Hudson Bridge. An overlook serves up scenic views overlooking the Hudson River and trails follow a historic carriage road that passes ruins of a 19th-century estate.

Venture to the United States Military Academy at West Point for the history buffs in the family where countless figures in American military history received their training. Afterward, take a guided walking tour or spend some time checking out the museum on campus.

Connect with Nature in the Adirondack Mountains

Boasting more than 2,000 miles of hiking trails, the Adirondack Mountains of Northern New York beckons to mountain lovers year-round. Forested paths, plunging waterfalls and summits with 360-degree views provide a vast variety of hiking challenges when you’re ready to let the kids out of the car to work off that excess energy.

First, be sure to check out The Wild Center . From the ever-entertaining river otters to tons of hands-on interactive exhibits, the 54,000 square foot indoor space will hold the kids’ attention for hours. Pair that with swinging bridges, a four-story twig treehouse, a spider’s web and an oversized eagle’s nest outside and you’ll never get them to leave. We even added a guided canoe trip to our adventure.

SheBuysTravel Tip : Reserve a ticket for timed entry ahead of your visit and bring a picnic lunch to enjoy in the beautiful wilderness.

Occupying 2,000 acres near the Vermont border, Fort Ticonderoga’s history dates back to 1755. An Adirondack highlight, the fort offers family-focused tours as well as immersive hands-on experiences. Take a road trip break for the day and get in touch with your inner soldier as history comes to life.

For lodging, check out Wildwood on the Lake in Lake Placid. It’s an easy-going family-owned lodge offering comfy accommodations, kayaks for exploring and campfires in the evening.

New York’s Longest Road Trip: Exploring U.S. Route 20

Stretching 372 miles from the border with Massachusetts to the border of Pennsylvania, U.S. Route 20 serves as New York State’s longest road trip. Rolling hills peppered with generations-old farms dot the pastoral landscape. Once a primitive Native American path that ultimately helped the westward movement in the state, U.S. Route 20 is rich with historic sites.

In Seneca Falls, discover the bridge that inspired “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Visit the supposed birthplace of Memorial Day, Waterloo. Detour off the route for a day trip to explore the Finger Lakes region, including “gorge-ous” Watkins Glen. Best known for its wine trail along with ample breweries, the bounty of this fertile land attracts visitors from around the world.

Embrace Farm Life

Find your way to Odessa for a visit to Sunset View Creamery . Here you’ll find delicious cheeses and friendly cows available for cuddling. Yes, cow cuddling is a thing and an experience you and the kids or grandkids won’t soon forget.

Next, Four Seasons Alpacas farm, where adorable alpacas await along with cute New Zealand pigs and super furry bunnies. Pop into the shop for some uber-soft alpaca scarves, hats or gloves. If you’re road tripping in the fall, take advantage of apple season by picking your favorite varieties at Apples & Moore.

Chase Niagara’s Waterfalls

Continuing on to Buffalo, be sure to stop by the Anchor Bar restaurant. At the birthplace of Buffalo wings, you’ll get a taste of the original sauce at this family-owned eatery.

Next, drive just 20 miles north of Buffalo where Niagara Falls awaits. Get up close to North America’s largest waterfalls with a ride on Maid of the Mist . This 175-year-old attraction recently converted to all-electric boats. Get even closer to the falls at Cave of the Winds where a series of boardwalks lead you to within 10 feet of the thunderous water. Be sure to return to Niagara Falls State Park after dark to view the waterfalls illuminated in shades of red, green and blue. A perfect ending to your epic New York road trip.

A photograph of the 1903 Romanesque Revival L.C. Bates Museum Building, designed by architect William Miller. Submitted photo

HINCKLEY — On Saturday, May 4, the L. C. Bates Museum is set to host Walking Conversations as part of Jane’s Walk.

Jane’s Walks are free, volunteer-led walking conversations emphasizing the power of individuals to influence the places they live and the participatory planning approaches that have helped people connect, support each other, and improve a sense of shared identity. Close to 50 walks are planned in 35 cities and towns across the state, from York to Van Buren, representing all of Maine’s 16 counties, according to a news release from Deborah W. Staber with the museum.

As part of Jane’s Walk, attendees at 10 a.m. can tour the architecture of the 1903 L. C. Bates Museum’s Romanesque Revival building, designed by Maine architect William Miller, and walk the historic Good Will-Hinckley grounds around the museum.

They can see the 109-year-old pond and road designed by Carl Rust Parker, learn about the tree plantings near the museum and hear about the history of Good Will-Hinckley.

The museum is located at 14 Easler Road.
