King Charles (born Charles Costa on May 6, 1985) is an English alternative and indie-rock singer-songwriter, hailing from West London, England, UK.

Having learned to play the guitar, piano and cello from an early age, and being classically trained singer, Charles would regularly perform in his school’s choir. He began writing songs when he 17 having fallen in love with country music and used the guitar as a creative outlet. Following a couple of terms studying sociology at Durham University, Charles returned to his hometown of London with the pseudonym King Charles.

Shortly after, Charles formed the indie-rock band Adventure Playground who called West London’s ‘Bosun’s Locker” their home. After touring with the likes of Laura Marling and Noah and the Whale in the UK, the band split in 2008. As a result Charles launched his solo career in 2009 around the same time as winning the prestigious International Songwriting Competing in Nashville, with a voting panel consisting of Tom Waits, Kings of Leon and Timbaland amongst others.

With an appearance that’s somewhere in between 18th Century royal aristocracy and Prince, and music that lands somewhere between psychedelic rock and indie-folk, King Charles has been turning heads since his debut single “Time of Eternity” in 2010. The single earned the singer-songwriter a host of positive responses including support from online musical press and UK radio DJs including Zane Lowe and Lauren Laverne.

In late 2010 King Charles supported Mumford & Sons on their sold-out tour of the U.S. and signed an international record deal with Universal Republic in conjunction to his independent UK label Mi7 Records. King Charles released his debut album “Loveblood” in May 2012, which reached No. 26 in the UK Albums Chart. The album was supported by an extensive tour and spawned the singles “Bam Bam”, Love Lust” and “Ivory Road”.

Live reviews

King Charles is an extravagantly-dreadlocked, cavalier-moustached alternative folk pop artist. The man himself describes his music as ‘glam-folk.’ The extrovert look, combined with his extreme arrogance on stage, makes for an entertaining, if not always likeable, image. Others seem to agree. King Charles is currently making a bit of a splash and is deemed the next big thing on the scene. He’s been enjoying greater media attention and a slot on the John Peel stage at this year’s Glastonbury.

I saw King Charles in last year Think Tank @ Hoults Yard in Newcastle. The warehouse location provided the ideal setting for King Charles’s indie tunes. The audience packed into the venue and was keen to get involved. The lively crowd quickly got into the swing of things, enthusiastically singing along to Mississippi Isabel’s repetitive refrain: ‘she kissed me once, I took her out for lunch, and she never kissed me again…’

As he often does when performing at larger venues, King Charles gave his music a more alt rock twist, which works when performing folk-pop hits to a less intimate audience.

King Charles is interesting and thoroughly entertaining. My advice is book tickets before he gets too big and prices shoot right up!

Where will King Charles III visit during his first trip to Yorkshire as monarch?

  • Wednesday 2 November 2022 at 12:51pm

King Charles

King Charles is to pay a two-day visit to Yorkshire in what will be his first official trip to the county as monarch.

His Majesty and Camilla, the Queen Consort, will visit locations in Bradford , Leeds , York and Doncaster on Tuesday and Wednesday, 8 and 9 November.

The visit will begin with a trip to the headquarters of supermarket Morrisons, in Bradford, and finish with their majesties conferring city status on Doncaster at Mansion House.

Lord Mayor of Bradford, Cllr Martin Love, said: "It is a terrific honour for Bradford to be among the first places that our new King will visit. We are looking forward to showing off our great city and introducing King Charles to some of the exceptional people from across our district."

Lord Mayor of York, Cllr David Carr, said: "To extend the traditional greeting to King Charles III on what we hope will be the first of many visits to York will doubtless be one of the highest honours of my career and my period in the great office of Lord Mayor of York.

"I am thrilled to be able to welcome him on what I am certain will be a day which combines great joy at his visit and reflection on the great service and legacy of his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II."

The King's visit to Yorkshire – the full list of locations

Tuesday, 8 November:

Morrisons head office, Bradford: The King will meet people from Morrisons farming, community, sustainability and apprenticeship programmes. His Majesty will also view some of Morrisons’ Market Street fresh food counters and talk to butchers, bakers and fishmongers.

Bradford City Hall: The King will attend a reception with young leaders from across Bradford. His Majesty will be welcomed to Centenary Square with a performance from The City of Bradford Brass Band. Students from the Punjabi Roots Academy will also play. Upon departure, the City Hall bells will play On Ilkley Moor Bah t’At.

Leeds Central Library and Art Gallery: The King will view The World Reimagined Globes, part of a national project to explore the history and impact of the Transatlantic slave trade. His Majesty will then meet young achievers and will be introduced to  members of the Jamaican and West Indian community and will tour the Jamaica Society Leeds’ Rebellion to Romance exhibition.

Leeds Building Society: The King will meet representatives from the Leeds financial sector. Before leaving, His Majesty will unveil a plaque officially opening the Leeds Building Society head office, one of the most energy-efficient buildings in the region.

Wednesday, 9 November:

Micklegate Bar, York: The King and the Queen Consort will be welcomed to the city of York at a special ceremony. The ceremony, which sees the monarch enter the city, was last carried out in 2012 when Queen Elizabeth II and The Duke of Edinburgh entered the city to attend the Maundy Service at York Minster.

York Minster: Their majesties will attend a short service and meet people from the Cathedral and the city. On arrival, they will be heralded by the minster bells. They will be welcomed by the Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell. The statue will be blessed by the archbishop.

Charles and Camilla Announce the Destination of Their First Royal Tour as King and Queen

The King and Queen are heading to France and Germany ahead of Charles' coronation

king charles tour dates uk

King Charles III and Queen Camilla are gearing up for their first royal tour since Charles ascended the throne.

On Friday, Buckingham Palace announced that Charles and Camilla will travel to France and Germany ahead of the coronation for the first overseas visits of the new reign. The five-day visit will take place from March 26 to March 31.

While Charles has officially traveled the world for decades in his role as the Prince of Wales while supporting his late mother Queen Elizabeth , this is his first landmark tour as head of state and King.

"The visit will celebrate the U.K.'s relationship with France and Germany, marking our shared histories, culture and values," a palace spokesperson said. "It is also a chance to look forwards and show the many ways our countries are working in partnership, whether that be to tackle climate change; respond to the conflict in Ukraine; seize trade and investment opportunities or share the best of our arts and culture."

"As well as speaking to the strength of the United Kingdom's bilateral relationships with France and Germany, Their Majesties' visit will include engagements highlighting the importance of sustainability and community — key themes which have been embraced by citizens of all our countries. There will also be opportunities to reflect on the sacrifices and challenges of our shared past, out of which has come an enduring legacy of cooperation and reconciliation," the spokesperson continued.

The tour, which kicks off with the couple's arrival in France on Sunday, March 26, will see Charles and Camilla take on between 25-30 different engagements across the two countries.

In France, highlights will include a spectacular state banquet at Chateau de Versailles, hosted by President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte Macron, and a ceremony of Remembrance and wreath laying at the Arc de Triomphe.

Charles, 74, will speak at the national assembly in Paris, while Camilla, 75, and the First Lady will visit and officially open the new Manet and Degas exhibition at the Musée d'Orsay. The royal couple will also head to Bordeaux for part of their stay in France. There, the couple will tour an organic vineyard, which has pioneered a sustainable approach to winemaking, while Charles will also witness some of the devastation caused by last summer's wildfires on the outskirts of the city.

In Germany, where they will visit Berlin and Brandenburg and Hamburg from March 29, some of the standout moments include a ceremonial welcome by President Steinmeier and Frau Büdenbender at the Brandenburg Gate (the first time any visiting head of state has received such a welcome at the site). The couple will also be guests of honor at a State Banquet. Like in Paris, Charles will address the federal legislature, the Bundestag.

Camilla and Frau Büdenbender are set to visit the Komische Oper in Berlin to learn more about the opera company's outreach projects and community engagement. While in Brandenburg, King Charles will meet representatives from a joint German/U.K. military unit and see a demonstration of their bridge-building amphibious vehicles.

In Hamburg, Charles and Camilla will visit the St. Nikolai Memorial, the remains of a church that was destroyed when the Allies bombed the city during the Second World War. Charles and the German President will lay remembrance wreaths. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the bombing. The palace said that Charles will also be shown more about the port of Hamburg's adoption of green technologies.

Some royal watchers had speculated that Charles and Camilla would concentrate on one of the countries of the Commonwealth for the new monarch's first official tour. However, the two European capitals have apparently been chosen to underscore historical links with European neighbors in the aftermath of the U.K. leaving the European Union and the war on Ukraine. Palace officials point out that all travel is at the request of the British government and follows invitations from the two countries as well. There is clearly an enthusiasm among the two neighbors to be the first destinations of Charles's reign.

Officials do point out, however, that the first incoming state visit of Charles' reign was from a Commonwealth country when the South African president visited last fall. Charles also met with the leaders of the 54 nations within the Commonwealth at the funeral of his late mother and will do so during Commonwealth Day later this month and at his coronation in May.

Despite a couple of egg-throwing incidents, Charles and Camilla have been enthusiastically welcomed during outings around the U.K. During a visit to Bolton in January, when they stepped out in the wake of Prince Harry 's memoir, Spare , they went on a walkabout for 20 minutes shaking hands with many of the 3,000 people who turned out to greet them.

Suzanne Hartop from St. James's Daisy Hill primary school told PEOPLE about the "once in a lifetime opportunity" of meeting the King. "He had a lot of people to get through but he shook hands and spoke to as many as he could," she said.

The palace said that Charles has made 35 official visits to France, and 29 to Germany, while Camilla has been on eight official visits to France, and three to Germany. They last visited France in 2019 to mark the 75th anniversary of the Normandy Landings and traveled to Germany (Berlin) in 2020 to mark the country's National Day of Mourning for victims of war.

King Charles opens Balmoral Castle to public for first time - but tickets aren't cheap

The Aberdeenshire castle, set in the Scottish highlands, is widely believed to have been Queen Elizabeth II's favourite residence and is where the royals have spent many of their summers.

Visitors will be able to tour parts of Balmoral Castle used by the Royal Family for the first time this summer.

Balmoral Castle, set in the Scottish highlands, is widely believed to have been Queen Elizabeth II's favourite residence and is where she spent most of her summers.

Guided "castle interior tours", which will take visitors to parts of the building used by the Royal Family, will now be available between 1 July and 4 August, with each group restricted to 10 people.

Tickets are priced at £100, or £150 with afternoon tea included, are limited to 40 tickets per day and are already selling fast.

The tours will end before the King and Queen arrive at Balmoral for their summer break in Aberdeenshire.

The Balmoral Castle website says the tours are the first of their kind since the building was completed in 1855.

Previous tours, which will continue, have concentrated on the grounds and gardens with access to the castle limited to the ballroom.

The website said the new tour will "take you on a historical journey through several of the beautiful rooms within Balmoral Castle".

"You will learn about the origins of the castle and how it has been loved by generations of the Royal Family.

"Travel through time from the purchase of the Balmoral by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, through to present day, where you can see how rooms within the castle are used today by their Majesty's The King and Queen and other members of the Royal Family."

The tour also includes access to the ballroom with a collection of the King's watercolour collection depicting scenery at Balmoral, Highgrove and Sandringham as well as a collection of outfits worn by King Charles and Queen Camilla, the late Queen and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.

Queen Elizabeth II spent much of Prince Philip's last years with him at Balmoral and died there herself on 8 September 2022 .

The tours of Balmoral Castle come as the East Wing of Buckingham Palace will be open to visitors for the first time this summer, when special guided tours of the principal floor will be available in July and August.

The East Wing includes the front facade of the historic building and features the famous central balcony, where the monarch and members of the Royal Family have gathered for public appearances during special occasions or historic moments since 1851.

The wing is still used by the Royal Family today for official meetings and events.

Small groups of visitors will also be able to visit rooms on the principal floor, including the principal corridor which runs the length of the wing, furnished with highlights from the Royal Collection.

Why does King Charles III have two birthdays?

As monarch, King Charles III has two birthdays – just like his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II , did.

While a second birthday is something the rest of us could only dream of, the late Queen celebrated two birthdays each year throughout her seven-decade reign.

Her Majesty was born in 1926 on April 21, but an ‘official birthday celebration’ took place in the form of Trooping the Colour – a summertime parade.

Follow the latest Trooping the Colour updates on our live blog

Indeed, King Charles has carried on this tradition. You may be wondering why monarchs have two birthdays – and how this first began.

Here’s all you need to know.

Why does King Charles have two birthdays?

King Charles has carried on the tradition of Trooping the Colour , which dates all the way back to 1748 .

As a result, he does indeed mark two birthdays – the official one, which traditionally takes place on a Saturday in June, and his actual date of birth, on November 14.

(FILES) Britain's King Charles III and Britain's Queen Camilla wave from the balcony of Buckingham Palace after attending the King's Birthday Parade, 'Trooping the Colour', in London on June 17, 2023. The first sovereign to have two birthday events was King Charles’s distant relative, King George II – who wished to throw a public celebration, complete with a parade and plenty of pomp and circumstance .

However, having also been born in November, the odds of the weather holding out for a huge outdoor bash in the UK were pretty slim.

Instead, the monarch decided to use the UK’s annual military parade held in the summer as his official birthday celebration.

He would therefore mark his birthday twice – once publicly in June, and once privately in November.

How does King Charles celebrate his birthdays?

King Charles III will take part in Trooping the Colour this weekend , on Saturday June 15.

There will be an important change to this year’s event at Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall. In 2023, the King  inspected the troops on horseback  with other senior royals as Colonel in Chief of the seven Guards regiments of the Household Division.

However, this year the King will review the Guardsmen and officers from an Ascot Landau carriage, with the Queen by his side, following advice from his doctors for his  ongoing cancer treatment .

The Irish Guards’ Number 9 Company will be the ones “trooping” their colour during the ceremony.

Back in November 2023, the King celebrated his 75th birthday at the launch of the Coronation Food Project , which addresses food poverty and waste.

He toured a surplus food distribution centre outside London with Queen Camilla and hosted a reception for nurses and midwives at Buckingham Palace.

The King also shared his birthday celebrations with neighbouring 75-year-olds and community champions by hosting live music and tea parties at Highgrove House before ending the day with a private family dinner at Clarence House.

How old is King Charles?

King Charles is 75 years old , reaching the milestone age on Tuesday, November 14 2023.

Back in September 2022, Charles became the oldest monarch to accede the throne at age 73 .

Previously, that title was held by William IV, who was 64 when he assumed the throne in 1830.

By contrast, Queen Elizabeth II, The King’s late mother, was just 25 years of age when she became Queen in 1952.

The youngest British monarch at the start of her reign was Mary, Queen of Scots, who became queen aged 6 days in 1542 – while the youngest King was Henry VI, who was 8 months and 26 days old at the time of his accession in 1422.

What will happen after King Charles?

As King’ Charles’ birthday is also in November, the decision to host Trooping the Colour in June feels more connected to history than ever before.

When the time comes for the nation to have William as sovereign, the tradition of two birthdays might come to an end.

This is because Prince William’s birthday falls on June 21 already.

Future king Prince George also has a summer birthday , on July 22.

Australian states vying to host King Charles and Queen Camilla during visit

A solitary home on an outcrop on an island, surrounded by aqua coloured water and another island in the distance.

States and territories are vying to host King Charles III and Queen Camilla during their expected visit in October, as the federal government works with palace officials to put the final touches on the royal couple's itinerary.

Tourism authorities say past royal trips, which have resulted in images of Australian landmarks being beamed around the world, have prompted an influx of bookings and tens of millions in visitor spending.

Offers ranging from luxury tropical island stays, exclusive wildlife encounters, wine tours and opera performances have been put forward by the country's premiers at the request of the federal government.

A circular spa overlooking aqua blue seawater with a tiny island in the distance.

Giselle Bastin, a Flinders University expert on the British royal family, said it was unlikely the royal couple would visit every state and territory due to the king's ongoing treatment for cancer.

"The tours have become much shorter since the 50s," she said, adding that she expected the royal couple would do a six-day tour with about three appearances a day.

"While he's very keen on all the states and territories … it'll be whichever state has put in the best case for why they need to be visited."

Prince Charles and Camilla greet a girl in a pink beanie with two pom poms outside a hospital in Brisbane.

She is also convinced King Charles and Queen Camilla will enjoy the same rock-star reception experienced by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in 2018, and Prince William and his wife Catherine four years earlier.

"Even though the Sussexes and the then-Cambridges had enormous media pull because of their youth and celebrity status, I think King Charles comes with that extra fairy dust of kingship," Dr Bastin said.

"The sovereign is a big deal for many Australians still."

So, what's on offer?

State and territory leaders were asked to develop itineraries aligned with two main themes — King Charles's first visit to Australia as sovereign and his interest in climate and sustainability.

Queensland's proposed royal itinerary includes a visit to Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane, a trip to the Gold Coast and then north to Cairns, where the king would meet those impacted by January's devastating flooding event in the wake of Cyclone Jasper.

The couple would also travel to Lizard Island, an hour's flight north of the tropical city, where they have been offered the use of a luxury home and cottage — owned by Racing Queensland chairman Steven Wilson.

It is currently advertised at $30,000 a night, but the Queensland government said it would not cover the cost of accommodation.

Queensland's Tourism Minister Michael Healy said the king was no stranger to that part of the world — he holidayed on the picturesque Great Barrier Reef island during an unofficial trip in 1966 when he was aged 17.

"Others states and territories may be in a bidding war but Queensland is the obvious choice as the jewel in the crown of any royal visit," Mr Healy said.

"It also fits with his personal interests in disaster recovery and the climate as our region recovers from the devastating flooding impacts of post-Cyclone Jasper and coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef."

King Charles as a young man on remote Upolu Cay, with a big grin and surrounded by hundreds of birds in the air.

Ms Bastin said it would be "very hard" for the royal household to pass up Queensland.

"It seems to cover all the bases," she said.

"It would suit the king's personal agenda in that it's about the environment, sustainability … and the destruction of the natural environment — that is so much in his interest."

Western Australia's itinerary includes a visit to the WA Museum Boola Bardip, five renovated heritage buildings in the heart of Perth, and a walk along the Matagarup Bridge — a soaring pedestrian bridge.

The royal couple would also visit Rottnest Island, one of the state's most popular tourist destinations, for a Quokka spotting session.

"We have put forward a number of unique experiences for the king and queen to consider which showcase our state's incredible biodiversity, rich history and cultural offerings," a Western Australia government spokeswoman said.

A quokka smiles at the camera, with the ocean in the background.

"The UK is a priority tourism market for WA, with 111,000 visitors from the United Kingdom visiting in the year ending September 2023, injecting around $227 million into the state's economy."

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns said a royal visit would not be complete without a trip to Sydney, the most "beautiful city on Earth".

The tour would include a visit to the Opera House, Bondi Beach and Harbour Bridge.

Sydney Opera House lit up at night.

"I don't think you could really come to Australia and convince people back home that you've come to the country without coming to New South Wales, in particular Sydney," Mr Minns said.

Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff said he wanted King Charles to see "what it means to be a Tasmanian".

"Whether it be our cool climate wines, unique heritage, reputation as a renewable energy powerhouse or craftsmanship, we hope to have the opportunity to show King Charles what makes Tasmania the best place to live, work and raise a family," he said.

Royal visits can generate millions but come at cost to taxpayers

Tourism experts say royal visits often result in a flurry of bookings and enquiries from visitors.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's visit to Australia in 2014 saw stunning photographs of some of Australia's most famed landmarks — including Uluru in the Northern Territory – showcased around the world.

Tourism Australia reported a 125 per cent increase in visitors from Great Britain to its website on the day of the couple's Uluru visit.

Daniel Gschwind from the Griffith Institute for Tourism said it was advertising that money could not buy.

"The king is one of the most famous people on the planet and he draws attention to the places he sees and visits," he said.

"The king will be travelling with hundreds of media representatives and it will certainly draw attention to the many attractions we do have."

The then Prince of Wales smiles in a grey suit as he meets scores of women in Brisbane.

Security and transport is typically paid for by the federal government, states and territories, but the royals pay for their accommodation.

But republicans say the cost of the tour should be footed entirely by the royal family.

Australian Republic Movement chief executive officer Isaac Jeffrey said the cost of royal visits often ran "into the millions".

"This gentleman from the other side of the world lives 17,000km away … He's got a $37 billion property portfolio and he makes hundreds of millions of pounds every year," he said.

"He could pay his own way. Australians are suffering at the moment from a cost-of-living crisis and we don't think that we should be footing the bill for rich international celebrities who only come to visit us every 10 years or so, for a couple of days."

Headshot of Australian Republic Movement's Isaac Jeffrey, he wears a black shirt and blue jacket.

Mr Jeffrey said he would like to see the king and queen venture beyond the capital cities.

"I think it'd be great to see the king and queen of Australia visiting regional Australia," Mr Jeffrey said.

"He could check out some of the big things — the Big Prawn in Ballina or the Big Banana at Coffs Harbour."

The king is yet to formally announce the tour, which would coincide with the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Samoa in October.

The Big Prawn.
