Carpet Factory Surprise

We were a group of 7 from our cruise ship, and were delighted with OTTI. Every aspect of our Ephesus & Kirazli Village Tour was well thought out by guide Banu. The van was cool and comfortable; her pace was just right; and we glad to have included the addition of Terrace Houses at impressive Ephesus. (Banu did mention that my skirt was inappropriate, as parts of the Terrace Houses tour permitted looking down onto houses in which workers were sometimes still excavating. I didn't see anyone but I do wish I had known in advance!) The somewhat dreaded Carpet Factory lunch and demonstration was fantastic! We opted for the regular lunch; all members of the group enjoyed it and the demo was extremely thorough and very entertaining. Best of all, Gizem Gencer responded online to all of my questions prior to the tour. We were completely satisfied with our arrangements.

We had a great tour of Ephesus. Our guide was knowledgable, kind, and friendly. The driver was conscientious and safe. The coach was new and sparkling clean. The sites are sufficiently complex that we learned many things we could never have learned on our own. The price was fair and the Ottoman lunch in the olive garden restaurant was one of the highlights of our trip. I strongly recommend this tour.

We were very impressed with our tour. Our tour guide, Banu Akin's knowledge of Ephesus was truly remarkable. We appreciated that the tour package was all inclusive. The lunch we consumed was not only plentiful but every dish was delicious. Anyone contemplating visiting Ephesus should make contracting for a tour with Ottis Travel a priority!

I booked this tour with Otti Travel and we had Erman as our tour guide. The booking was easy with a very prompt reply although a follow up email to ask a question got no reply (so be sure you ask everything up front). Erman was a terrific guide--28 yr old graduated University and post grad study in England. His English was perfect and he answered many questions for us as well as explaining the history of the sites we visited. He was waiting for us with a sign with our name as we disembarked the cruise ship.. Lunch was really good with local food and a lovely setting. We also enjoyed the low key rug tour and opted out of the possible leather tour (too tired) which would have also been interesting. The tour was much less expensive than the ship option and with only two people, much more meaningful. Erman was able to run a credit card for the balance due for the tour. I would highly recommend this tour.

My friend and I were on the Norwegian Jade and opted to book our own tour with OTTI Travel. I had sustained a foot injury in Santorini and was sporting a lovely cast on my right foot. I was concerned about being able to walk on the tour, but there was no need to worry. We were met at the ship by our knowledgeable guide, driver, and comfortable car. We went to Ephesus, a carpet factory co-op, and then on to a fabulous lunch in the countryside. Our lovely guide, assisted me with the smooth marble steps and rocky pathway in Ephesus and I was able to see everything. We ended up having one of the best days of our 14-day trip. I would highly recommend seeing Ephesus and booking with OTTI Travel. They provide excellent ship-to-ship service.

We opted for this tour company to see Ephesus during our trip to Turkey because they seemed to be the most flexible in working with our schedule and were still very affordable. All their reviews were really high which made the determining factor. While I was hesitant to choose a tour company for fear of not getting what was advertised, I'm glad I chose this company because the trip through OTTI Travel exceeded our expectations. They booked everything for us, including a plane ticket from Istanbul to Izmir so it was a really easy process. They were flexible and helpful with everything we needed. The tour guide was waiting for us after we exited the terminal so we didn't have to search for the van. My wife and I were the only people on the tour and they really personalized it to us. It was great to have such a personalized tour of this area. Also, the van was very clean and comfortable. The driver was very safe as well, i did not worry at all during our ride out or back. Our tour guide, Banu, was great. She was super friendly and very knowledgeable. She taught us so much about not just the sites but the history, geography, and culture of the area. She really made everything come alive; I would highly recommend her as a guide if she is available. The trip itself was great; the weather was amazing and it was not crowded at any site we went to. I highly recommend seeing the terrace houses; it is well worth the extra money and time. Definitely check out the Basilica of St John and the Temple of Artemis if you have time; it was really interesting to see the two together even though the ruins are not as detailed as Ephesus. We also decided to go to the co-op to see the rug making and eat lunch. We did not opt for the upgraded lunch but found the standard lunch to be very good and satisfying. Yes, they want you to buy rugs but we did not feel highly pressured and enjoyed the ability to see so many different rugs. The tour was really flexible with going to additional places or not; they could have taken us to a leather factory as well which we opted not to do. I would highly recommend using this tour company and we definitely plan to use them again the next time we visit the area.

Some carpet factories offer guided tours of their facilities, where you can learn about the intricate process of carpet making. These tours can be enlightening, providing insights into the artistry and craftsmanship behind each carpet.

We took a guided tour of the Bazaar 54 Carpet Factory in Anatolia, and learned so much!

INTRO TO CARPET MAKING

Upon arriving at the carpet factory, we were greeted by a guide who took us on a guided tour of the premises.

Our guide introduced the carpet weaving process. We learned about the materials used in different carpets, such as wool, silk, and cotton. In Turkey, the material most commonly used is sheep’s wool because the Anatolian plateaus are excellent grazing land for sheep and good grazing land determines the sheen and strength of the wool.

We also got to see the difference between hand woven carpets and machine made carpets. As he walked us through the factory, he introduced us to different techniques used to create the beautiful pieces. We also got to witness the skilled artisans at work, creating carpets using traditional techniques.

DESIGNS AND MOTIFS

Our guide explained the significance of different carpet designs and patterns. Turkish carpets often incorporate intricate motifs and symbols, each with its own cultural and historical background.

Some of the most popular motifs in Turkish carpets include:

Yıldız (The Star) : The star motif, though it generally symbolises happiness, can represent the womb, and it may represent fertility as well.

carpet store tour

Nazar (The Evil Eye) : The weavers have always believed some people possess a power in their glance which can cause harm, injury, misfortune, and even death. At immediate risk are babies, pets, important objects in the home, and property. The Muska is a triangular package containing a sacred verse carried by the tribal people for protection. When woven into a rug, it serves as an amulet, conferring protection by its presence.

Tree of Life: The tree of life motif symbolizes the desire for immortality. It can also mean the afterlife. This motif is the worldwide symbol of life rising up to heaven and it encompasses both earth and heaven.

THE SHOW ROOM

At the end of the tour, we were taken to the showroom and provided complimentary tea, coffee, red wine or white wine. The salesmen displayed a wide array of carpets ranging in size, colour, price, and material. The salesmen were incredibly knowledgable and helpful, so if you provide them a budget and a size that you’re looking for, they will provide many options for you to look through!

BUYING A CARPET & QUALITY CONTROL

If you’re interested in purchasing a Turkish carpet, the staff will explain the different features of the carpets and help you find one that suits your preferences and budget.

Authentic Turkish carpets are renowned for their exceptional craftsmanship, unique designs, and high-quality materials. However, due to their popularity and demand, there can be varying levels of authenticity and quality in the market. Some factors to consider when assessing the authenticity and quality of Turkish carpets include:

Origin : Authentic Turkish carpets are handwoven in Turkey, particularly in regions with a rich history of carpet making, such as Anatolia. Look for carpets labeled as “Turkish” or specifying the region where they were made.

carpet store tour

Materials : Traditional Turkish carpets are made from natural fibres like wool, silk, or a combination of both. High-quality carpets use locally sourced, natural materials that are carefully selected for durability and beauty.

Handmade vs. Machine-made : Authentic Turkish carpets are handwoven using traditional techniques passed down through generations. Machine-made carpets, on the other hand, are mass-produced and lack the craftsmanship and uniqueness of handmade pieces.

carpet store tour

Knot Density : Knot density refers to the number of knots per square inch. Higher knot density generally indicates a finer and more intricate carpet, which often correlates with better quality and craftsmanship.

Bazaar 54 Carpet Factory, Carpet Weaving, Turkey Tour

Design and Motifs : Authentic Turkish carpets feature traditional motifs and designs that hold cultural and historical significance. Look for intricate and well-executed patterns, which are a hallmark of genuine Turkish carpets.

carpet store tour

Labelling and Certification : Look for reputable sellers who provide information about the carpet’s origin, materials, and production process. Some carpets may come with certificates of authenticity or quality to verify their genuineness.

If you decide to buy one, keep in mind that bargaining is common in Turkish culture, especially in markets and carpet shops. Feel free to negotiate the price with the salesmen, and try to get them to throw in concessions such as free shipping or bigger discounts.

GETTING YOUR CARPET HOME

If you plan to buy a large carpet or multiple pieces, many factories can provide international shipping options back to your home country to ensure your purchase reaches your home safely. Depending on the size of your carpet, the factory could also provide you a free suitcase to help you transport your new purchase home.

Visting the Bazaar 54 Carpet Factory was one of the highlights of our trip through Anatolia. Seeing the intricate patterns and craftsmanship required to make these beautiful carpets was such an amazing experience. My family even ended up purchasing one of the Turkish carpets for our home! If you’re in Turkey, visiting a carpet making factory is a must see.

A Complete Guide to Turkish Carpets

A Complete Guide to Turkish Carpets

Turkish carpets before the arrival of Turkish nomads to Anatolia

The Beginning of carpet and rug weaving is not exactly known when or where first started, there are sources indicating that it probably started in Central Asia . When the natives living in this region, which are called nomadic tribes or simply ”nomads”, migrated to the west of Asia as a result of a large population explosion and started to search for more suitable areas for them to live, the nomads were exposed to harsh weather conditions. For this reason, they started to use goat wool to set up their tents. Goat wool is much longer and firmer than sheep’s wool. The flat weaving technique was used for the first time in this sense to make nomadic tents.

Inside a Turkish Yurt Tent

Later, these nomadic people felt the need to protect themselves from the coldness of the soil under their tents. Therefore, they produced the floor coverings called “Carpets” using the same flat weaving technique. Since pagan beliefs reigned in this area where they lived, most of the flat weaving motifs reflected the depictions of a number of symbols that were important for them. After a while, the art of weaving developed and many items used in daily life were women into the carpets such as the saddlebag of horses or camels used in transportation.

Rugs always have been an important part of Turkish culture since nomadic times. Rugs, being placed in the center of nomadic tents, were an important part of everyday life. To understand the Turkish Carpet, we must first know the pre- Anatolian Turkish culture and the geographic and sociological reasons that led to the emergence of the carpet-making culture of Turkic nations. Turks are a nation that had a nomadic lifestyle. Turks originated from Central Asia . As a necessity of nomadic life, their economy was based on animal husbandry. Turks had very high wool production, especially thanks to the sheep and goats they raised on the steppes of Central Asia .

The origins of carpet weaving in Turkish culture

An amazing Turkish carpet used in a modern room

In addition, nomadic Turkish tribes had to carry their homes with themselves, as they were constantly traveling on horseback, looking for grazing, fertile land for herds. That’s why the early Turkic nomad people were specialized in tent-making techniques, weaving, and knot-making styles.

It is believed that nomads living in wool tents weaved carpets for the floors of their tents and were the first creators of carpet art. Over time, simple, solid color carpets have turned into more colorful and mixed patterned artworks. Turkish rugs, whether knotted or plain weave, are the most perfect known art form produced by the Turks.

Pazyryk Carpet and Gordes Knot

The Pazyryk Rug

Today, many scientists agree that the carpet found in the Pazyryk Kurgans (Burials) excavations in the Altai region of Siberia is the world’s oldest known carpet. This find was called the Pazyryk Carpet due to the area it was found in. Although there are debates about the origins of this carpet and the nations claiming the ownership of Pazyryk carpet, the Gordes knots technique used in the weaving of the carpet are the clearest evidence that the origins of the Pazyryk carpet are Turkish culture. Pazyryk carpets and other findings from burials are exhibited in the Saint Petersburg Hermitage Museum in the Russian Federation today.

The arrival of the Turkish carpets in Anatolia and the birth of the Anatolian carpet

Turkish carpets had been in use in Turkish culture long before the arrival of Turks into Anatolia and Turkish carpets made their way into Asia Minor before the Turkish people arrived here. Famous Chinese traveler Huan Tesank wrote that when he arrived in present-day Azerbaijan in the 7th century, he saw the world’s largest carpet looms.

Two Turkish Nomads on a Turkish Carpet in front of a Classic Turkish Yurt

In addition, the inhabitants of Anatolia before us have neighbored and traded with carpet weaving nations like the Sassanians for hundreds of years. The Byzantines and Turks lived together for about 400 years after the Turks entered Anatolia . Turkish carpet tradition has been blended with the ancient culture and patterns of Anatolia for more than a thousand years and brought out the world-famous Anatolian carpets. Turkish rugs are the most sold household items in the whole world.

Materials used in Anatolian or Turkish carpets

Wool Dyeing to Make a Handmade Turkish Carpet

In the production of handmade carpets, certain yarn types are used in Anatolia as well as in the other carpet weaving nations of the world. The most valuable and special carpets are made of silk. What makes silk carpets special is the fineness of the material and therefore the high number of knots in the weaving. They are considered to be the most durable carpets. Bursa city of modern Turkey has been the silk production center of Anatolia since the Ottoman period.

Silk Worm Cocoon

Wool is the second most popular yarn type used in carpet weaving. Wool carpets have been the oldest and most expressive parts of Turkish culture. “Lotto Carpets”, the copies of which are frequently encountered in the West, especially during the Renaissance, are the best-known examples of wool carpets. The origins of these rugs are thought to be hand-woven carpets sent by Ottoman rulers as gifts to western leaders.

Silk Production from Silk Worm Cocoons

The use of cotton in the entire carpet is a newer case. In old Turkish carpets, cotton was mostly used in fine embroidery and weaving looms to add strength to the carpet, as in wool Hereke carpets. Natural dyes were used in coloring Anatolian carpets. Parts of plants such as centaury, saffron, laurel, walnut, stems, branches, flowers, and fruits of many plants are used, and some insect species have been used in carpet dyeing. It has been determined that the Pazyryk carpet, known as the oldest carpet in the world, uses the red obtained from the shell of the Polish cochineal.

Most common colors used on Turkish carpets

Navy Blue : Navy blue, which forms the ground color of the Turkish carpet, is the most commonly used color in Turkish carpets because the sky is blue. It is obtained from the root of the “rubex” plant found in Turkey.

Red : Red takes its color from henna, a symbol of fertility in history. The reason why women complain about henna is the expectation of fertility. The same expectation is reflected in the color of Turkish carpets. It is obtained from the herb “Sideritis Trojana Ehrend” found in Turkey.

Brown : Brown has taken its place in the Turkish carpet because all living things will come from the earth and return to the earth and also the living things get their nutrition from the earth. It is obtained by adding bush cones to the red water.

Black : It is the least used color on the carpet. Black is sadness. Older women use black more. It is obtained by boiling soft black rocks with herbs. Many nomadic clans do not use the color black at all.

White : Young girls use this color more often. The reason for their frequent use is the joy of the color white, their expectations from life, and their desire to express their longing to be a bride. Carpets with white floors are woven by the nomadic clans.

Most common motifs in Anatolian carpets

Today the geography where the artist lives and the raw materials which can be obtained by the artist shapes the crafts they create. Picasso, Rembrandt, or Van Gogh reached oil paints and brushes in the society where they were born and created the most famous works of the west. In this context, if we understand the raw materials such as wool, silk, and natural dyes of a Turkish nomad who was born in the steppe, the cultural and artistic value of a Turkish rug can be better understood.

Turkish Carpets Before Anatolia and the Origins of Carpet Weaving in Turkish Culture

Turkish civilization, which has an intercontinental history, has been blended with Byzantine, Armenian, Persian, Kurdish, and Arab cultures. Turks have been creating works of art with deep meanings and rich backgrounds. Perhaps the works where we see this cultural diversity at best are Anatolian carpets.

A Classic Ushak Carpet from Turkey

Turkish carpets and kilims have gone beyond merely commercial or artistic objects. Carpets sometimes became the way a young girl conveys her wishes to her family, or sometimes became a father’s lucky charm for a good harvest. Let’s have a look at some important motifs which can be seen on Turkish carpets.

Evil Eye Motifs on Turkish Carpets

Amulet or evil eye bead motifs were embroidered on Turkish carpets by many weavers to protect themselves from the evil eyes.

 Eye Motifs on Turkish Carpets

The eye motif generally kept the other people’s jealousy away from abundance in the house. The eye motif is mostly located around fertility motifs.

Motifs Representing Female Dominance on Turkish Carpets

It is the symbol of femininity, maternity, and fertility. It is proof that mother goddess cults such as Cybele are still alive today.

Girl's Headband Motifs on Turkish Carpets

The headband motif was woven by single girls to indicate their wishes for marriage, and married women to indicate that they wanted children.

Hand Motifs on Turkish Carpets

The hand is one of the oldest motifs which can be seen on Turkish carpets. It signifies God’s creation of humans and their constant protection.

Human Motifs on Turkish Carpets

The human motif usually describes the longing to have children or the lover abroad.

Ram Horn Motifs on Turkish Carpets

Ram horn is the symbol of masculinity and power. It is often used as a symbol of power on the borders and in the center of carpets.

River Motifs on Turkish Carpets

The meander or river motif, taken from the waterways around the nomadic Turks. Later Roman culture inherited this motif too. Meander represents fertility and rebirth.

Tree of life Motifs on Turkish Carpets

The tree of life is a motif from the pre-Islamic culture of the Turks, and it is still in use in the present day. This tree is the symbol of a life that is constantly growing and finally reaching heaven.

Tribal Symbols on Turkish Carpets

Throughout history, Turks have lived as tribes or, most fundamentally as families. With the Tamga or Stamp motif, the traces of the family have been engraved in the carpet. Tribal symbols greatly contribute to the value of the Turkish carpets.

Regions of Turkey famous for their unique carpets

Marco Polo, who traveled around Anatolia in the 13th century, commented on the beauty and artistic value of these carpets. A few other carpets from this period, known as Selçuk carpets, were discovered in many mosques in central Anatolia . Selcuk Rugs are exhibited today in museums in Konya and Istanbul. The thought that we could be looking at the same carpets that Marco Polo knitted in 1272 is quite exciting.

Old Map of the world showing the area between Anatolia and Central Asia

Pre-Ottoman Turkish carpet weaving generally produced carpets on which geometric motifs and depictions of nature were the main subjects. In the Ottoman period, Turkish carpet motifs began to change with the influence of the cultures of the new countries conquered. Especially the influence of Tabriz and Cairo cultures is evident on the carpets. During this period, European civilizations also discovered Turkish rugs and showed great interest in these handcrafted masterpieces. Renaissance painters such as Hans Holbein, Jean – Etienne Liotard also admired Turkish carpets and included these rare handwoven artworks in their paintings.

An Ushak carpet with a medallion design

Today, tourists visit my country both to see our masterpiece carpets in our palaces and museums and also to buy carpets from centers such as Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, Ephesus , Cappadocia, Antalya, and Ushak.

Today there are three crucial carpet weaving regions in Turkey which are West Anatolia , Central Anatolia , and Eastern Anatolia . Let’s have a brief introduction to the carpets of these regions and some useful facts about Turkish handmade carpets.

The best-known carpet types of Western Anatolia are Bergama , Hereke, Uşak, and Milas carpets. Especially the carpet factory named “Hereke Fabrika-i Humayunu”, founded by Sultan Abdülmecid I in 1841, made Hereke carpets famous all over the world. Today, one of the most famous examples from 1860 is still in use in the Vermeil hall of the White House.

Bergama Carpet from 18th Century

Central Anatolia region and especially cities of Konya, Kayseri, Niğde, and Sivas are important carpet centers in Turkey. In 1292, the famous Italian traveler Marco Polo wrote in his travel book of Konya that Konya rugs are the most beautiful carpets in the world. Sivas carpets, on the other hand, differ from other Central Anatolian carpets with the fineness of their yarns and the abundance of colors used.

Eastern Anatolia is the most multicultural region of Turkey thanks to its proximity to Iran and the Caucasus. Motifs and colors of many nations can be seen intensely on the carpets of regions such as Kars, Erzurum, Diyarbakır, and Hakkari in Eastern Anatolia .

How to understand if a Carpet is Machine-made or Hand-Woven?

The easiest way to distinguish hand-woven carpet from machine-made carpet is by checking the knots on the back of the carpet. Handwoven carpets are made by tying knots in each loop of silk, wool, or cotton threads. However, the knots in the machine-made carpets are not found since the machine-made carpets are automatically woven by industrial machines. When you buy a handwoven rug, first look at the back of the carpet and examine the knots. If you see knotting marks like straight strip lines, that carpet is a machine carpet. But if the knots are visible in an asymmetrical way, that carpet means a hand-woven carpet.

Photo of Turkish loom and weavers from 1908

Another answer to your question of how to understand hand woven carpet is the method of distinguishing it based on the patterns on the carpet. If the carpet is woven by the machine, the patterns appear completely symmetrical and regular. Because the pattern introduced to the machine is automatically processed in a neat process. However, no matter how experienced the person weaving the carpet in hand-woven carpets is, there are definitely differences between the patterns. If you see that the patterns are not in full symmetry, but rather asymmetrical in between, you can be sure that it is a hand-woven carpet.

How to understand the quality of a handmade Turkish carpet?

Gordes Knots on a Turkish Carpet

Wherever you go and whatever you want to buy or whatever product you try, sellers will tell you that their product is the best quality. This is also the case when buying a carpet. So How to understand the quality of a handmade Turkish carpet? There are certain criteria that make handmade Turkish carpets high quality. When you find a carpet that includes all of these criteria, you can conclude that it is of good quality. So what are these criteria?

Surface Weight

The surface weights of handmade Turkish carpets are one of the first things most people check when choosing a carpet. The surface weight of the carpet can enable us to understand that the material used in weaving, therefore you will know will the carpet is long-lasting or not.

Carpet Density

The density of the knots on a Turkish handmade carpet is one of the biggest indicators of quality. We can say that the higher the knot density, the better the carpet is. Although these density rates vary according to the material of the carpet, you should prefer more tightly woven carpet types.

Which materials were used in the handmade carpet?

You can say that material used in making the Turkish handmade carpet is the biggest factor in the quality of the carpet. Different threads have different characteristic properties. Generally used yarn types in synthetic or machine-made carpets are mostly made of nylon or polyester. Silk, wool, and cotton threads are used in handmade carpets. These materials generally determine the characteristics and quality of the carpet

Warranty Certificate

One of the factors you should pay attention to when buying a carpet or trying to understand its quality is the warranty certificate. Or you should learn the return conditions. Remember that nobody guarantees a poor quality product. This is a simple method, but it is always effective.

Style of the Carpet

The style of the carpet can affect its performance. So when you buy a kitchen rug, it may not be healthy to think for the living room. Because carpets are generally designed for certain areas. Since many people will pass over the runners, it was designed in that style, and therefore it was named runner.

Determining that the carpets and textile products of a Roman family were woven on the wooden loom, the archaeologists experimentally prepared a replica of the ancient loom using wood by hand.

Archaeologists took over the loom to make clothes similar to those used in the statues and to revive history. It is thought that different weaving threads are used for summer and winter clothes. It is known that weaving was a field of activity for women in ancient times.

Hi there,   Anyone buy a carpet in Kusadasi?

Yes, I bought one a few years ago in the obligatory rug place the guide takes the group after the Ephesus tour. It's about 4' x 6', and they folded it up small enough to carry home in a carry-on bag. :)

5,000+ Club

We went prepared to buy a carpet, knew what we wanted and the price we wanted to pay. We had a lot of fun touring the carpet "factory", saw how silk is unwound from the cocoons, how both silk and wool carpets are woven, had some nice local snacks, toured their display of antique carpets, tapestries, and headresses -- and then settled down to serious bargaining! It is fun as they unroll carpet after carpet in front of you. My wife settled on the pattern and colors she wanted and then went to work. When we had the salesman sweating and running into the back room to check with his boss we figured that was where we wanted to be.

They had my wife write her initials on the back of the carpet, and promised to ship it home for no charge to arrive in about six weeks. A bit less time than that and it arrived in perfect condition. It has been on our living room floor for several years and we love it!

Did it cost a great deal less than it would have here? WELL -- probably not really very much. Did we have a great time buying it? YES, for sure!

Check out our trip report and pictures at http://www.bully4.us/holyland.html

Have a GREAT cruise!

If you plan to purchase a carpet I would recommend that you be preapared to spend several hours at the store and that you do your homework so you are well prepared.

40,000+ Club

Totally agree with Keith. The Turks are fantastic entreprenaurs and are professional bargainers. They are also experts on carpets. In simple words, if you do not know what you are doing you will likely pay too much for an inferior carpet. Do your pre-trip homework so you know hot to spot quality and know what similar carpets cost at home or on the internet. Then go in some carpet shops (in Turkey) and have fun chatting, looking at the product, and bargaining. Our record for bargaining was when DW spent more then an hour buying a 2 foot square high quality carpet (used for a wall hanging) in Istanbul. During the procsss we had several cups of Tea and coffee, learned about every relative in the owners family, and probably overpaid but no longer cared since we had so much fun.

I agree with the posts above. We had visited Kusadasi (and Ephesus) last year. So, this year, we stayed in town and I invested the time it takes to experience the process of purchasing a Turkish rug. It was great fun. After the bargaining was finished I ended up paying a bit more than 50% of the original asking price.

Carpet buying can be great fun, and not a very time consuming experience depending on what you are looking for. If you want a full room size carpet, expect to spend well over $10,000 US and even a small 2 x 3 carpet is going to run over $300. The bigger the carpet the longer the buying experience.

The shops in the bazaar just off the port entrance are very nice. I would suggest beginning your adventure there and see where it leads.

Dh almost did.......had to drag him outta there !!!! The tour of the rug factory was very informative and we enjoyed it alot...... and the rugs they showed us were indeed gorgeous. They started with the Kilims (more rustic style) and worked their way up to the $$$$ ones :) Dh asked which one I liked and I picked one...... not to buy but I guess he had different idea...... so he began bargaining...... I had to stop him and walk out ...... while beautiful - just not my style (for my house) and he loves them !!!! In retrospect - it would have looked nice in my living room - guess I gotta go back ! We loved Turkey so wouldnt mind a bit ;)

It depends on a lot of different factors, like materials (wool on cotton, all silk, etc.), knots per square inch, single knot, double knot--and a bazillion more details that the average American tourist hasn't studied. http://www.about-turkey.com/carpet/technique.htm

We kind of stumbled in blind and said "Oooooh--that's pretty!" and took it from there. The one I bought in Kusadasi is (theoretically) from Hereke, and I still love it 5 years after I bought it. :) But I strongly subscribe to this tourist-shopping axiom: see it, love it, buy it (within reason). You may not pass this way again.

My mother and I both bought carpets in Kusadasi last year. My mother let her "guilt" at having them pull out so many carpets get the best of her and felt obligated to buy one. *laugh*

While she was in one store, I went next door to a carpet place and saw a rug that would have worked beautifully with my color scheme at home if the whole thing had been the colors of a certain segment. (Navy and Burgundy) I explained this to the person, but he only pulled out red carpets. One of the other people came in to the store and tried to explain I wanted a carpet that was made up of just those two colors and an off-white. I was finally told they didn't have anything that was like that.

The next place was after we took a tour. I was just browsing around and started talking to one of the owners (?). I explained what I wanted, and was told that carpets would never be those colors completely, partly because of the way the wool is died. It was then suggested, because I also really enjoy geometric shapes to look at the "native" type of rugs. (The name of these escape me.) These were much more to my liking, and I finally found one that had navy with off-white for my living room. These rugs do not have pile like the carpets do. I think I paid around $300 including free shipping to the US, but I will only be brining it out when company comes so the animals do not ruin it. (Then again, I'm able to act like a naive college student when I need to. *grin*)

The best tips I can give are:

1. Go there with an idea of what you want.

2. Do a little bit of research to find out what the different types of rugs are and what they cost.

3. Don't be guilted into buying something you're not sure you want. (My mother had lots of buyer's remorse until she got it. I had buyer's remorse only because I realized I still had to pay for the animals' being boarded during my trip.)

4. When you see what you want and have that "That's the one!" feeling, start negotiating. Don't bother looking at others or you'll get confused.

5. Take photos of the area you are planning to put it in. This will help you determine if it'll match.

6. Take photos of the rug you do purchase. You'll want to show it to others before you have it back home.

7. If you have a difficult time understanding the people or the negotiations, ask the tour guide to help you.

8. Make sure you ask questions about the total price, shipping, etc, before leaving.

9. Make sure you get answers to the above questions before leaving. If you don't, walk away.

Sorry for the long post, but it takes me back to my trip. ;-) Hope this helps,

TLCOhio

Hi there, Anyone buy a carpet in Kusadasi?

Lots of good comments and suggestions have been shared. Here's my "two cents worth" on spending lots more money. It's really important to do your homework, in advance!!! This includes coming to Turkey with your sizes, a few small fabric samples brought along and checking pricing/quality at stores in your home area. The great news is that the better stores will BOTH explain lots of interesting and helpful info. BUT, they will have lots and lots of color and design options. It can get a little overwhelming. If you haven't brought along some size info and/or thought about it prior, you can get "lost" or confused, quick. We ended buying two smaller carpets in Istanbul, same design. My wife and I couldn't agree which color was best for a particular location. When they arrived, my color choice worked best there. We used the other one nearby and it's great to have those wonderful memories from our visit to Turkey.

Below is a picture from our carpet demo. THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Tour Details

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.

carpet store tour

Duration: 2 hours

Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing

This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.

Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.

Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.

Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.

Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating

We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

Physical Rating

Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.

These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.

These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.

Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.

Luxury Rating

Some trips are like a stroll on the beach, while others have you trekking alpine passes. Some of you thrive on camping out on the savannah, while others may prefer a hot shower and a comfortable bed in a lodge. Follow the grading systems below to find the right trip for you.

To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport. So whether you're travelling on a budget and want to save money by using public transport, or prefer upgraded accommodation and are happy to pay a little more, then we have a level for you.

You Don't Go Back to the Carpet Store

by Holly Marsh

Marshmueller The Farewell Your Happening Now

tl;dr Today kicks off the Farewell Tour of Marshmueller. If there's something you've had your eye on, you better snap it up!

Story Time:

When I was still in treatment for breast cancer, and definitely after, there's been a mantra playing in my head on a loop- and that's "You Don't Go Back to the Carpet Store." That might not make any sense to you, but for now, it's my North Star as I navigate this strange time in my life and career. The mantra is a nod to a scene from one of my favorite shows, Rick and Morty (it's definitely not perfect, but it's just bizarre and silly enough of a show that I love it). Rick and Morty go to Blitz and Chips, an arcade, where Morty plays a virtual reality game called Roy. Ehh, it's probably better if you just watch it.

"You beat cancer and went back to the carpet store? Boo."

That line has stuck with me. I don't want to go back to the carpet store. The carpet store isn't an actual carpet store for me, obviously- it's trying to do ALL the things and pushing myself to the brink of burnout, exhaustion, and tarnished relationships. It's working a full-time job and then doing parental duties and then sewing until midnight nearly every night. It's traveling to Portland every week in December to do all the craft shows. It's being super self-critical when I mess up or make a mistake. It's not accepting my looks/physical self post-cancer. We all have our own versions of carpet stores, and some people don't need a cancer diagnosis to shake themselves out of it and find their purpose (even if it's to just serve butter --sorry, another Rick and Morty joke). So I'm working on what me not going back to the carpet store actually looks like. I know I come from a place of privilege to even be able to consider the possibilities, which means I also get to include ways to help others who aren't as privileged. But I'm working on it.

I've already made minor and major changes in my life, knowing this would be a lifelong bonsai-like trimming process.  I've discovered working as a freelancer works better for my brain and my energy levels. I've determined that exercise is a non-negotiable, even if it's 10-15 minutes.  And now I've come to the decision that Marshmueller, at least the handmade products themselves, need to be part of that trimming process.  I didn't realize just how burned out I was until I literally HAD to stop working due to cancer treatment. Before my diagnosis, there were many long days, late nights, and so many weekend hours in production, or trying to sell my wares in person at shows.

At first, "not going back to the carpet store" meant no more late nights and weekends all the time, so last year I finally found an amazing sewist to partner with (if you need piecework done, Shannon is AMAZING and she's an incredible fiber artist! ).  Working with a sewist did take a lot of weight off my shoulders. But I was still being my own bottleneck, as I still had to cut out fabric, and once goods came back sewn, there was still finishing tasks to complete (installing snaps, packaging, etc.). And I just got to a point where I wasn't enjoying it, let alone making time for it.

What I'm doing now

After treatment and during the last two years of the pandemic, I've been thoroughly enjoying working with other creative business owners to design their brand identity, website, or email marketing. This new services venture is called Ecommerce Arcade, and I'll be sharing the brand identity I designed for it soon.

In order to create more space in my brain, my bandwidth, and my studio, I'll be selling my remaining inventory of finished products, and soon to follow, I'll be selling fabric yardage, scraps, and raw materials.

I still plan to continue illustrating and putting my silly art on things, and once m2 is officially done, I'll switch gears and flip everything here on this site over to hollymarshmallow, my brand for illustrated goods. The website for Ecommerce Arcade will launch soon as well (can you see why I need extra space in my brain and bandwidth?).

I'm so grateful to have had this incredible ride for over a decade. I would have never met the multitude of phenomenal folks like you.

Thank you to everyone who purchased goods, or commissioned a custom order, or shared my work with your own audience. You helped build this business with me, and I'm so grateful for your years of support.

All my inventory has been updated, so if there's something you've had your eye on, or if you want to stock up for gift-giving, get to it !

All my love, Holly Marsh

I just heard your story on an old episode of a podcast I started listening to today, and came here to buy those “reusable snack bags” I heard about. Sad to see I have missed that boat, but happy to hear it was your farewell cruise departing from burnout bay. 🙃 I am so proud of you for forging forward and protecting yourself and setting boundaries that serve you!

I’ve been following your business ever since we were at the same craft show… a bajillion years ago.

I’m really happy for you. I don’t think people who are not creatives realize how much time and energy goes into making things. And then to spend so much time trying to sell them to the right audience to make some money… it’s a HUGE time and energy suck. And then w your cancer diagnosis and treatment… I can’t even believe you had the energy EVER to do all the things. Good for you for trimming the stuff that is no longer energizing for you.

Im sure your next steps will be amazing. Good luck and congratulations.

How to Open a Carpet Store

A carpet store sells, repairs and sometimes cleans carpets. They may sell rugs and designer carpets as well. Carpets are either sold for a flat fee and installed by the business, or are priced by square foot / square yard.

Carpet Store Image

Start a carpet store by following these 10 steps:

  • Plan your Carpet Store
  • Form your Carpet Store into a Legal Entity
  • Register your Carpet Store for Taxes
  • Open a Business Bank Account & Credit Card
  • Set up Accounting for your Carpet Store
  • Get the Necessary Permits & Licenses for your Carpet Store
  • Get Carpet Store Insurance
  • Define your Carpet Store Brand
  • Create your Carpet Store Website
  • Set up your Business Phone System

We have put together this simple guide to starting your carpet store. These steps will ensure that your new business is well planned out, registered properly and legally compliant.

Exploring your options? Check out other small business ideas .

STEP 1: Plan your business

A clear plan is essential for success as an entrepreneur. It will help you map out the specifics of your business and discover some unknowns. A few important topics to consider are:

What will you name your business?

  • What are the startup and ongoing costs?
  • Who is your target market?

How much can you charge customers?

Luckily we have done a lot of this research for you.

Choosing the right name is important and challenging. If you don’t already have a name in mind, visit our How to Name a Business guide or get help brainstorming a name with our Carpet Store Name Generator

If you operate a sole proprietorship , you might want to operate under a business name other than your own name. Visit our DBA guide to learn more.

When registering a business name , we recommend researching your business name by checking:

  • Your state's business records
  • Federal and state trademark records
  • Social media platforms
  • Web domain availability .

It's very important to secure your domain name before someone else does.

Want some help naming your carpet store?

Business name generator, what are the costs involved in opening a carpet store.

Your startup costs will be between $2,000 and $10,000, depending on your location. You can start from home, or you can use a small workshop with a monthly rent of about $1,000. Expect to pay additional money for high-grade insurance.

What are the ongoing expenses for a carpet store?

Expect to pay between $4 and $5 per square foot of carpet. Your monthly utilities will be approximately $300. A carpet shop’s rent can be as much as $2,000 per month, depending on its size. Expect to pay employees between $8 and $15 per hour, depending on their expertise.

Who is the target market?

Both homeowners and businesses make excellent customers. Focus on selling high-quality carpets and on promoting carpet installation. Because businesses often have full-floor carpeting needs, they’re more likely to pay for installation jobs. They’ll also need to regularly update their carpets to keep an area managed, attractive and effective. Your showroom should promote both individual carpets and full-floor-length carpets.

How does a carpet store make money?

A carpet store makes money by selling and installing carpets, either as individual products or in custom lengths. A carpet store can also make money by installing these carpets. If this is the case, a carpet installation can be charged as either a flat fee or on a per-hour basis.

Some carpet stores may clean or repair carpets. If they’re knowledgeable about high-quality carpets, they can even restore valuable carpets. Some carpet stores may expand into the flooring business. If so, they may make money by selling, installing and repairing customer floors.

Expect to charge between $2 and $10 per square foot for average carpets. Installations can cost between $30 and $40 per square yard, if it’s a full-floor-length carpet. On average, you’ll make roughly $995 for a full-floor-length carpet purchase and installation.

How much profit can a carpet store make?

A beginning carpet store can make about $55,000 in its first year. It will, however, need to consistently sell carpets to remain profitable. A highly successful carpet store which caters to large audiences can make hundreds of thousands—if not millions—of dollars per year.

How can you make your business more profitable?

Expand to carpet installations as soon as possible. To be competitive, you’ll need to keep overhead costs low while maintaining inexpensive installation costs. Once you’ve established your client base, use a referral network to get more customers. By focusing on installation quickly, you’ll become a well-known, qualified installer. Otherwise, you’ll lose customers to pre-established carpet stores with years of experience.

Want a more guided approach? Access TRUiC's free Small Business Startup Guide - a step-by-step course for turning your business idea into reality. Get started today!

STEP 2: Form a legal entity

The most common business structure types are the sole proprietorship , partnership , limited liability company (LLC) , and corporation .

Establishing a legal business entity such as an LLC or corporation protects you from being held personally liable if your carpet store is sued.

Form Your LLC

Read our Guide to Form Your Own LLC

Have a Professional Service Form your LLC for You

Two such reliable services:

You can form an LLC yourself and pay only the minimal state LLC costs or hire one of the Best LLC Services for a small, additional fee.

Recommended: You will need to elect a registered agent for your LLC. LLC formation packages usually include a free year of registered agent services . You can choose to hire a registered agent or act as your own.

STEP 3: Register for taxes

You will need to register for a variety of state and federal taxes before you can open for business.

In order to register for taxes you will need to apply for an EIN. It's really easy and free!

You can acquire your EIN through the IRS website . If you would like to learn more about EINs, read our article, What is an EIN?

There are specific state taxes that might apply to your business. Learn more about state sales tax and franchise taxes in our state sales tax guides.

STEP 4: Open a business bank account & credit card

Using dedicated business banking and credit accounts is essential for personal asset protection.

When your personal and business accounts are mixed, your personal assets (your home, car, and other valuables) are at risk in the event your business is sued. In business law, this is referred to as piercing your corporate veil .

Open a business bank account

Besides being a requirement when applying for business loans, opening a business bank account:

  • Separates your personal assets from your company's assets, which is necessary for personal asset protection.
  • Makes accounting and tax filing easier.

Recommended: Read our Best Banks for Small Business review to find the best national bank or credit union.

Get a business credit card

Getting a business credit card helps you:

  • Separate personal and business expenses by putting your business' expenses all in one place.
  • Build your company's credit history , which can be useful to raise money later on.

Recommended: Apply for an easy approval business credit card from BILL and build your business credit quickly.

STEP 5: Set up business accounting

Recording your various expenses and sources of income is critical to understanding the financial performance of your business. Keeping accurate and detailed accounts also greatly simplifies your annual tax filing.

Make LLC accounting easy with our LLC Expenses Cheat Sheet.

STEP 6: Obtain necessary permits and licenses

Failure to acquire necessary permits and licenses can result in hefty fines, or even cause your business to be shut down.

State & Local Business Licensing Requirements

Certain state permits and licenses may be needed to operate a carpet store. Learn more about licensing requirements in your state by visiting SBA’s reference to state licenses and permits .

Most businesses are required to collect sales tax on the goods or services they provide. To learn more about how sales tax will affect your business, read our article, Sales Tax for Small Businesses .

Certificate of Occupancy

A carpet store is generally run out of a storefront. Businesses operating out of a physical location typically require a Certificate of Occupancy (CO).  A CO confirms that all building codes, zoning laws and government regulations have been met.

  • If you plan to lease a location :
  • It is generally the landlord’s responsibility to obtain a CO.
  • Before leasing, confirm that your landlord has or can obtain a valid CO that is applicable to a carpet store .
  • After a major renovation, a new CO often needs to be issued. If your place of business will be renovated before opening, it is recommended to include language in your lease agreement stating that lease payments will not commence until a valid CO is issued.
  • If you plan to purchase or build a location :
  • You will be responsible for obtaining a valid CO from a local government authority.
  • Review all building codes and zoning requirements for your business’ location to ensure your carpet store will be in compliance and able to obtain a CO.

STEP 7: Get business insurance

Just as with licenses and permits, your business needs insurance in order to operate safely and lawfully. Business Insurance protects your company’s financial wellbeing in the event of a covered loss.

There are several types of insurance policies created for different types of businesses with different risks. If you’re unsure of the types of risks that your business may face, begin with General Liability Insurance . This is the most common coverage that small businesses need, so it’s a great place to start for your business.

Another notable insurance policy that many businesses need is Workers’ Compensation Insurance . If your business will have employees, it’s a good chance that your state will require you to carry Workers' Compensation Coverage.

FInd out what types of insurance your Carpet Store needs and how much it will cost you by reading our guide Business Insurance for Carpet Store.

STEP 8: Define your brand

Your brand is what your company stands for, as well as how your business is perceived by the public. A strong brand will help your business stand out from competitors.

If you aren't feeling confident about designing your small business logo, then check out our Design Guides for Beginners , we'll give you helpful tips and advice for creating the best unique logo for your business.

Recommended : Get a logo using Truic's free logo Generator no email or sign up required, or use a Premium Logo Maker .

Promote your carpet store through local carpet cleaners. You should use a referral system to gain new clients, and you should cater to businesses with in-depth carpeting needs. Any long-term projects should be business-centric, as they’re simply more profitable.

How to keep customers coming back

Mostly, you’ll attract customers by your location and grand opening event. A carpet store needs to be in a highly visible area, and it should be able to build rapport with carpet cleaning crews, home improvement stores, hardware stores, and interior design centers.

As for customer retention, make sure your services include repair and restoration. Particularly, sell high-quality carpets and sell additional restoration services. A lot of carpet owners will return to the location which sold them their carpet—so as to ensure high-quality upkeep and restorations.

STEP 9: Create your business website

After defining your brand and creating your logo the next step is to create a website for your business .

While creating a website is an essential step, some may fear that it’s out of their reach because they don’t have any website-building experience. While this may have been a reasonable fear back in 2015, web technology has seen huge advancements in the past few years that makes the lives of small business owners much simpler.

Here are the main reasons why you shouldn’t delay building your website:

  • All legitimate businesses have websites - full stop. The size or industry of your business does not matter when it comes to getting your business online.
  • Social media accounts like Facebook pages or LinkedIn business profiles are not a replacement for a business website that you own.
  • Website builder tools like the GoDaddy Website Builder have made creating a basic website extremely simple. You don’t need to hire a web developer or designer to create a website that you can be proud of.

Other popular website builders are: WordPress , WIX , Weebly , Squarespace , and Shopify .

STEP 10: Set up your business phone system

Getting a phone set up for your business is one of the best ways to help keep your personal life and business life separate and private. That’s not the only benefit; it also helps you make your business more automated, gives your business legitimacy, and makes it easier for potential customers to find and contact you.

There are many services available to entrepreneurs who want to set up a business phone system. We’ve reviewed the top companies and rated them based on price, features, and ease of use. Check out our review of the Best Business Phone Systems 2023 to find the best phone service for your small business.

Is this Business Right For You?

Those who have experience with flooring, home maintenance, and carpet installations are great carpet store owners. A carpet store owner should have a keen eye for quality carpets, and they should be good at gathering resources, talking to customers, and managing resources

Additionally, a carpet store owner should understand which carpets pair well with area rugs, hardwood, cork surfaces, bamboo surfaces, and wall solutions. A good owner will have a solid marketing strategy, be good at locating vendors and prioritize differentiation.

What happens during a typical day at a carpet store?

A carpet store, day in and day out, sees retail traffic. Customers enter, browse carpets, and decide on products they would like to purchase. A carpet store may have separate cutting sections for carpets. It may also feature carpet demos on display. A carpet store may cut carpet inside, or it may simply sign up customers for later services. In the latter case, the store’s technicians will travel to the customer’s home or business. Then, they install the carpet

Other daily operations include stocking the store’s inventory, helping customers, matching good carpets with different floor materials, and processing transactions. In addition, store owners will need to handle the business' finances, marketing, and sales strategies.

What are some skills and experiences that will help you build a successful carpet store?

Mostly, you'll need to be well-versed in carpet installation, removal, protection, repair, and restoration. You should also be knowledgeable in carpet fashion, flooring, and interior design. Management, marketing, and financing skills are also useful to a carpet store owner.

What is the growth potential for a carpet store?

A carpet store can expand quite a bit. Becoming a member of the World Floor Covering Association helps, as does becoming a member of the American Floorcovering Alliance. While many carpet stores begin as local providers, many have the opportunity to become national chains.

To grow successfully, however, a carpet store needs to offer a lot of variety. It should also expand to offer luxury-style carpets and flooring. Additionally, a carpet store should assemble a team of experts. Check phone book ads, connect with other businesses on the Internet and offer a finder’s fee to any local carpet cleaning companies.

What are some insider tips for jump starting a carpet store?

At the start, try to reduce your overhead costs as much as possible. Then, focus on building a stock while hiring showroom workers. These showroom workers should be very knowledgeable, so as to help you compete against established carpet shops. If you can’t find employees with decent experience, you’ll need to train them.

How and when to build a team

You should build a team as soon as possible. Aim to hire at least two to three showroom operators, as you’ll need to present your carpets and talk to customers about their quality. Your team can expand quite large, over time, if you’re servicing a large area.

Classic film lovers: See James Dean’s apartment and more on new TCM tour at Warner Bros.

In 2021, the Warner Bros. Studio Tour created new interactive exhibits focused on the company’s recent history, unveiling areas dedicated to the DC Comics universe and the “Harry Potter” franchise.

This week, the popular Studio Tour in Burbank is doubling down on its more distant past.

Warner Bros. is now offering a Turner Classic Movies-branded version of its studio tour that will bring guests to previously off-limit areas of the lot, including vintage animation buildings, a mini rose garden and an apartment that once housed James Dean. The 90-minute tram portion of the jaunt — about 30 minutes longer than the studio’s standard tram excursion — will allow guides to go deeper into the history of the studio’s catalog to deliver factoids related to such films as “Casablanca,” “My Fair Lady,” “Rebel Without a Cause,” “Auntie Mame” and many more.

“We’re off the leash,” says Brad Taylor, a 15-year tour guide veteran with Warner Bros., noting that the TCM excursion will include time for guides to chat with visitors about their favorite films.

The TCM hosts are seen on on the Warner Bros. backlot.

“We get to talk to the guests and really hang out with people who have the same passion that we do,” Taylor says. “I find that ‘classics’ guests are less about behind-the-scenes and more, ‘I can’t believe this is where we are.’ It’s just the look on their faces when they realize ‘Casablanca’ filmed here, or James Dean stood right here.”

The launch of the TCM tour arrives during the network’s 30th anniversary and close to 12 months after classic film fans were given a scare. In June, Warner Bros. announced that layoffs would hit TCM, including some of the network’s top executives, prompting concern from prestige directors such as Steven Spielberg, Paul Thomas Anderson and Martin Scorsese. After garnering national attention, key cuts were reversed and Warner Bros. sought to assure fans that TCM would continue to be handled with care.

Fears about TCM’s decline

Long live TCM! Our culture would be worse off without movies on TV

Without Turner Classic Movies and other channels for movies on TV, we’d lose the instructive pleasures of the happy accident, the unexpected discovery.

Aug. 1, 2023

TCM network hosts — Eddie Muller, Jacqueline Stewart, Ben Mankiewicz, Alicia Malone and Dave Karger — recorded new video segments for the outing. The tour will take guests into the lot’s Property House, an area not visited by the standard tour. Here, visitors can get glimpses of materials for a full set, including items for a complete Oval Office setting, but expect guides to highlight vintage items, such as a throne from the Errol Flynn pirate film “Captain Blood.”

Danny Kahn, vice president-general manager of the studio tour, says there have been numerous requests over the years from guests to delve a little deeper into the studio’s animation history. That’s why the TCM tour will for the first time take visitors to an area of the lot once known as “Termite Terrace,” which from 1955 to 1964, says Taylor, housed the animation department, a building with a sloped roof designed to capture sunlight. Animation legend Chuck Jones, says Kahn, had an office in the Termite Terrace area in the 1990s despite Warner’s moving animation production elsewhere.

How the Universal Studios tram tour defined the modern theme park

The most important theme park ride ever created? It may just be the Universal Studios tram tour, which dates to the silent film era. Once primarily a behind-the-scenes tour, the trek has evolved to define the modern theme park.

Aug. 3, 2023

Another unique tour locale is the exterior of the Dean apartment. When Dean resided there during filming of “East of Eden,” it was actually across the street from the lot, the apartment nesting above a pharmacy. But gradual studio expansion has led to the area now being on Warner Bros. property.

“That was an actual drugstore with apartments, and the studio rented it for him,” Kahn says. “I think it was to keep an eye on him and keep him on a short leash.”

The tour will also give tram riders a look at executive life at the studio, allowing them to briefly walk around a rose garden. The manicured spaces once held a tennis court as well as offices and personal screening rooms for the likes of studio mogul Jack Warner, with many of the structures dating to the 1920s. “It’s a really historic area of the lot that hasn’t really changed a lot in all these years,” says Kahn, noting the area is still in use by studio principals. “Jack Warner, when he ran the studio, privatized the first floor. That was a massage parlor that he had beneath his office.”

TCM Classic Films Tour

Where: The Warner Bros. Studio, 3400 Warner Blvd., Burbank 91505

When: Most days, 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Cost: $95 for adults; $82 for children. A SoCal resident discount is available for $75

Info: (818) 977-8687 or wbstudiotour.com

Staples of the tour, such as a journey around the backlot city streets, a visit to the “Friends” set and cafe and recent additions highlighting the studio’s modern franchise films are included in the TCM trek, as is a pre-tour reception with beverages and pastries. All told, expect the tour to last about 3½ hours. A tour spokesperson says the first TCM-branded outing is scheduled for Wednesday, with trams expected to depart daily after that date. Adult tickets are $95, but there is a Southern California resident discount available for $75.

“It feels so good to have TCM here,” Kahn says. “People understand that the TCM brand is synonymous with classic film.”

This July, Missy Elliott, Ciara and Busta Rhymes will be reuniting on stage for the Out of This World concert tour. In preparation for her first tour show since giving birth to her daughter Amora Princess in December, the mother of four shared on Instagram her mission to lose weight while juggling motherhood and entrepreneurship.

“Trying to lose 70lbs post-baby, prepare for a show and tour while breastfeeding, and running my businesses,” she captioned her post . “Shout out to all my mammas out there gettin’ in, I see you!”

Wearing a “Tough Sh*t” Nike hoodie, Ciara concluded her caption with the hashtag “Mamba Mentality,” referring to late NBA star Kobe Bryant ’s legendary saying.

The singer and actress is no stranger to the hustle of motherhood. Baby Amora Princess is the latest addition to the household of Ciara and her husband, Russell Wilson. Together, the couple is also raising daughter Sienna, 6, son Win, 3, and son Future, 9, whom Ciara shares with ex-partner Future.

Russell Wilson gets his wish as Ciara announces fourth pregnancy

While raising a household filled with her children’s “non-stop entertainment,” the singer continued to produce projects in her music career. Finding a unique balance between mommy and work life, Ciara filmed two music videos while pregnant with both Amora and Win.

“Ciara has been working and traveling all through her pregnancy. She shot the ‘How We Roll’ video while pregnant. She was dancing on set all day long for a full day’s shoot,” said an anonymous source, per People magazine . “She’s one of those mothers who has energy throughout her whole pregnancy.”

Part of Ciara’s ability to juggle it all is the support of her husband. From balancing responsibilities to helping his breastfeeding wife, Wilson has gained the MVP title in fatherhood.

“We’ve really balanced our crazy hectic schedules with each other,” the father and NFL quarterback told People. “And how we do that is we put each other first.”
